A typical sub-level block cave mining extraction method employs an undercut level to establish a cavity in hard rock, and as such requires special support methods and products to be installed during the development phase. The undercut level development in the block cave orebody is then sacrificial, and support elements will eventually report to the crusher and perhaps conveyor belt systems for transportation to surface. The choice of support products installed in the undercut level development should take cognizance of the detrimental effect these could have on the mining system such as cutting of conveyor belts, obstructing crushers, safety aspects, and productivity. This work explores the probability and practicality of making use of new-generation support products to make the operation safer as well as enhance productivity in the development phase and during the undercut operation. This paper will investigate the use of glass reinforced plastic(GRP) rockbolts and GRP mesh instead of conventional steel bolts and mesh along with resin capsule-filled holes with the GRP bolts. Complementing this with thin spray liner (TSL) application as another means of creating a safer operating environment, as well as a productive support medium, will also be addressed. These proposed items are envisaged to reduce production downtime and improve the safety of our people. These items are all easy and light to handle, cuttable and crusher friendly, as they will break up during the crushing process.

Introduction The US Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is proposing changes to the Code of Federal Regulations in the interest of minimizing the adverse effects of excess-spoil-fill construction on the “prevailing hydrologic balance, fish, wildlife and other environmental values” (70 FR 35112). The proposed changes will require: (1) minimization the amount of excess spoil generated at a mine site; (2) minimization of the size of the fills constructed; (3) consideration of alternative configurations for disposal; and (4) development of a disposal plan that would minimize adverse impacts to the environment.1 To achieve those objectives, mining companies operating in steep-sloped Appalachia will likely build excess spoil fills (also called valley fills) that toe out at higher elevations in the hollows (i.e. to prevent or limit burial of streams). Consequently, the slopes of fill foundations will generally be steeper. Whereas the authors of this paper support these measures to protect the hydrologic balance and general environment, we wish to point out that placement of fills on steeper foundations can negatively impact the stability of the fills if proper care is not taken during their construction. It is important to note that in addition to impairing human safety, valley fill instability can negatively impact streams, the riparian habitat etc., and thus defeat the very purpose of the spoil minimization measures proposed. We do not, however, propose additional regulatory requirements pertaining to valley fill stability. Rather, we intend to emphasize the importance of engineering requirements already on the books, especially as they apply to the predominant type of valley fill constructed: the durable rock fill. We believe that the practice of restricting valley fills, to higher elevations in the watershed leaves less room for error in the design and construction of stable structures. This paper gives a quick review of the nature of excess spoil generation; methods and requirements of excess spoil fill construction, and the to-date stability record of the fills. The interest in excess spoil minimization and how it affects valley fill construction is also discussed. Most importantly, we will review long-standing issues pertaining to proper design and construction measures with respect to durable rock fills and discuss how they will become more critical as spoil minimization is practiced.

"SUMMARY A practical application of nitric acid oxidation of sulphides, based on the principles of the Arseno process, has been developed for the Cinola ore. Development of the process has been based on testwork conducted by Bacon Donaldson of Vancouver and Hazen Research of Denver, and on conceptual engineering performed by Minproc Engineers of Denver.A comprehensive Stage II report for the project has been submitted to the B.C. permitting agencies, containing provisions for a zero discharge tailings impoundment system and prevention of acid mine drainage. Approval in principle is expected in early 1989.A feasibility study recently completed by Minproc Engineers and Davy McKee Corporation demonstrates that this project can be brought to production for a capital expenditure of C$120 million for a mill throughput of 6,000 tonnes/day and operated at a total direct operating cost of less than $20/tonne.INTRODUCTION The Cinola orebody was discovered in 1970. It is situated approximately in the centre of Graham Island, the largest of the Queen Charlotte Islands. It represents the mid to upper levels of a hydrothermal precious metals system, characterized by intense brecciation and silicification. Gold is associated with finely disseminated sulphides in a breccia matrix and in free form in numerous quartz veins.Ownership of the property has changed hands a number of times, and previous attempts to bring the property to production have failed. Two critical factors have frequently been blamed for difficulty in creating a successful project: namely, process and environment factors, hence the title of this paper.City Resources (Canada) Limited (""City"") acquired the property in 1986, and commenced an aggressive campaign to verify ore reserves, to carry out metallurgical research and to address environmental issues.PROJECT OVERVIEW When the Cinola orebody was discovered, the significance of hydrothermal mineraliza¬tion associated with crustal plate boundaries was not recognized, and for several years, the orebody was considered an uneconomic curiosity. If the type and location of orebody sought by many companies engaged in gold exploration were to be specified, it would probably be a description of the Cinola orebody - it is a large (greater than 1.5 million ounce), low grade (2.45 gm/tonne), refractory ore reserve associated with the Pacific rim crustal plate boundary. The industry appears to have recognized in the past few years that its future lies in the exploitation of such orebodies, and is prepared to come to grips with the technical problems associated with such ores. In this sense, the Cinola orebody might be considered to have come of age."

The science of soil mechanics is 100 years old, and rock mechanics is about 80 years old. While methods of analysis and design have been developed and have evolved over time, these are relatively young sciences. The rapid increases in computing power and new technologies have enabled more sophisticated modelling and monitoring. However, there are still many aspects of soil and rock mechanics that are not well understood. Geotechnical failures, which have major consequences, still occur. These consequences may include environmental damage, major production holdups and associated loss of revenue, damage to infrastructure, and loss of life. High-consequence events, which are rare, are more difficult to anticipate and to design for, because by their nature they involve extraordinary circumstances or conditions, often geological in nature. The risks are usually mitigated by conservative designs and monitoring. Detailed geotechnical investigations help us to understand the natural variability of soil and rock masses and identify unusual or unexpected conditions. Investigating and researching major geotechnical failures is essential to enable these unusual circumstances to be anticipated. In the past, severe unanticipated events may have been treated as natural events or ‘acts of God’. However, society now has much greater expectations and it is essential to have policies and procedures in place that enable appropriate management of these rare, high-consequence risks. A good example is the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), which was introduced after the catastrophic dam collapse at Vale’s Corrego de Feijao mine in Brumadinho, Brazil. The address will explain the concepts of uncertainty and variability, and how they should be taken into account in geotechnical design. The challenges facing geotechnical engineers, mine owners, and managers will be discussed. referencing a number of real case studies.

In Peru, after four years of pandemic, some mining companies have chosen to install integrated operating centers in central offices where through network technology and video surveillance it allows them to carry out their activities remotely, this has become a disruptive strategy to promote a safer and smarter mining industry. Our fundamental value is to improve the quality of life, safety and well being of our collaborators, that is why we have created the remote blasting engineering control center " Core" that allows us to humanize mining. Core is an integration of experience, security, technology, quality of life and artificial intelligence; it has media technology connected directly to the mining operation, specialist engineers and technical assistants in team they seek to create optimal proposals of drilling and blasting designs remotely that generate added value to customers. In the planning process the team suggests drilling meshes, in the loading process there are optimized, digitized designs and efficiency in the factory trucks finally in the safety process allows us to identify inadequate pipes within the blasting project, deviation of procedures, remote inspections, identify operating conditions to prevent future risks that may arise in the blasting process. The remote communication systems allow you to monitor mining operations remotely to identify and alert any operational or security deviation that was not identified by the personnel present in the operation, as well as to store images in case investigations are required. The results obtained have allowed us to reduce the exposure of personnel to any risk of the mining operation, to optimize times in the activities of our engineers who are in the mining operations since there is the permanent support of centralized specialists to face every challenge that arises in the operation, for the engineers who are in the offices of Core can be very close to the family and do not lose it, and for our customers it is to meet their needs with engineers specialists in the drilling and blasting process, as well as in safety to be able to proactively cope with any deviation that arises.

The Bureau of Mines devoted portions of the 1987-1988 field seasons to investigate the mineral aggregate industry in Juneau, Skagway, Haines, and Gustavus, Alaska, as part of the Juneau Mining District study. Statistics compiled for current suppliers include location, activity, reserve estimates, expected mine life, and types of commodities available. Each population center, except for Gustavus, is well endowed with suitable mineral aggregate to last at least 20 years. The Bureau of Mines quantified the mineral aggregate resource in many large potential sites within each area. Sampling, engineering and soil-index testing, site descriptions, deposit dimensions, and gold recovery information is described. Refraction seismic studies performed at three localities revealed gravel thicknesses in excess of 40 to 80 feet. In the Juneau area the Herbert/Eagle Rivers outwash area, East Fork Lace River. Antler/Gilkey Rivers, and Grizzly Bar (Taku Inlet) individually contain in excess of 60 million yd3 of excellent-quality aggregate with minor accessory gold credits. Haines is also well endowed with aggregate resources; large, quality deposits occur along and at the confluences of the Chilkat, Katzehin, Klehini, Tsirku, and Kicking Horse Rivers. Large deposits of granitic aggregate exist in the Skagway River and East Fork Skagway River.

At the Century mine in North West Queensland, MMG produces lead and zinc concentrates. The current production rate is close to 500 000 t of zinc per annum. Graphite is the main gangue in the orebody and a substantial quantity of chemicals are used to achieve an acceptable depression of graphite and other gangue materials in the current operation. In the future, it is anticipated that the content of graphite in the orebody will increase while the zinc grade will gradually drop. This scenario illustrates the importance of an optimised suite of flotation chemicals to maximise concentrate grade and recovery. As an alternative to the current reagent suite where dextrin is used to depress graphite, laboratory test work and subsequent plant trials were conducted with alternative depressants. These depressants facilitated both graphite depression and elevated zinc grades in the rougher concentrate. As an added benefit, it was also observed that the silica content in the zinc concentrate was reduced in the presence of the biopolymer selected for the plant trials. Results from both laboratory tests and plant trials will be discussed to illustrate how this change of reagent suite improved flotation yield at the MMG Century Mine.CITATION:Wynn, R, Lauten, R A, Liang, H and Stoitis, N, 2014. Coal is the most widely used fossil fuel in the world, providing more than 25% of world?s electrical power. Since, the behavior of coal particles in crushing and grinding circuits, concentration operations, and solid-liquid separations is strongly dependent on size, a reliable and accurate measurement of particle size and particle size distribution (PSD) is a vital aspect in coal cleaning. This paper presents a method for the characterization of ground coal particles using image analysis. We utilized a machine vision (MV) approach that used a document scanner as the imaging device and a user-coded ImageJ plug-in that processed the image and automated the PSD analysis and output results in textual and graphical forms. This approach used a sum of volumes (SVolume) as weighting factor for particle length as the primary dimension of analysis and was successfully applied to ground coal. The plug-in was further improved for computational performance in this study. Mechanical sieving (MS) was also used to compare the MV results. MV results showed that the PSD of ground coal followed a uni-modal normal distribution, and the log-normal plot against particle size exhibited a linear trend for most of the range. MS results, however, had three linear segments, when the width-based sieving results were transformed to lengths by applying the shape factor (width/length), but a definite deviation between the PSD plots was observed. This study demonstrates successful application of the MV SVolume approach for PSD analysis of ground coal, which can be extended to similar particulate minerals and products. This paper describing the mining practices at the Teck-Hughes mines at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in various mining districts. HISTORY Prospecting was begun in the neighborhood of Kirkland Lake in 1906, but staking did not take place until 1911. Gold-bearing veins were discovered by surface trenching in 1913 on the mining claims which now make up the Teck-Hughes Gold Mines (Ltd.). A small mill was erected in 1916 after the completion of some underground exploration. A transmission' line was built in 1917 to the camp to provide adequate power for a vigorous underground campaign. Also in 1917 the present management took control operations since 1916 have been continuous,' with a steady increase in production to date.

Virtually any composition of silica and alumina up to the composition of kaolin is possible. For purposes of comparison they may be classified in the Continental fashion in accordance with chemical composition or in the American way according to "duty". That the two methods are equivalent is shown by an inspection of the alumina-silica diagram of Bbwen and Greig (1924). 'Fireclay refractories are composed of a glassy and a crystalline component derived from the chemical and physical nature of the raw materials used in their manufacture.

So you want to install 2,600 augered cast-in-place piles, about 155,000 lineal feet, in 33 working days? It can be done. The Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) decided to build a combined cycle power plant in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. PSEG selected Fluor Constructors Indiana, L.P. to design and build the plant. Fluor Constructors, in turn, selected Richard Goettle, Inc. to install the piles. The initial plan was to install the 2,600 piles in 33 days, working six (6) ten hour days per week. After successfully installing and performing four pile load tests - up to 300 ton capacity - we set out to complete the work and meet the aggressive schedule. After three weeks of installing an average of 75 piles a day with three drill rigs, Fluor relaxed the schedule because we were so far ahead of their projected construction sequence. We elected to continue drilling on a ten-hour day, five days a week schedule. In all, we installed nearly 2,800 piles, totaling 175,000 lineal feet, in about 47 days.

An analysis was conducted to determine the effects of blasting on slope stability and downstream comminution processes. To investigate these effects, the extent of blast-induced rock damage and the magnitude of induced stress were examined. This analysis showed that damage may extend up to 500 meters (1MPa, tensile strength) in the rock mass, a distance that is sufficient to impact the pit-scale slope over the long term. In addition, the damage zone was calculated using the reasonable assumption that compressive waves are the primary agent in microfracturing during blast fragmentation. The calculated damage zone ? up to 5.6 meters (30MPa, 30% of the compressive strength) ? indicates that microfracturing can occur throughout the entire rock mass in the blasting area. Finally, an economic analysis was conducted by comparing two reasonably assumed blasts in a copper mine. The change in energy required for crushing and grinding was demonstrated using Bond?s law after increasing the blast energy from 180kcal/t to 350kcal/t. A total cost saving of 13.3% ($9.4M) was achieved with the increase. An optimal blast design should consider both slope stability (safety) and downstream comminution energy (production).

This paper considers the application of recent laboratory gas sorption data to the understanding outburst phenomena in underground coal mining. Previous use of threshold limits based on gas content and coal rank are placed in perspective. Although this work focuses on overseas research and experience, parallels can be drawn for New Zealand coal settings, taking into account localised mining and geological factors.

"Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. The processing facility consisted of two separate processing plants for oxide and sulphide ores. The oxide plant processed oxide ore bearing gold and silver ore using cyanide leaching and Merrill Crowe processes, while the sulphide plant produced a copper concentrate using conventional flotation. Cormidom is a commendatory example how mineral processing facilities can co-exist in balance with the environment. In 2014, natural occurring copper oxide contamination with finer grained copper-zinc sulphide mineralisation was expected to dominate the sulphide ore body. In anticipation Cormidom contacted the original plant designer Met-Chem to assist in overcoming this challenge. Test work indicated that increased flotation time and subsequent very fine grinding were required. Met-Chem provided the detailed engineering and Cormidom proceeded with the expansion project internally. Currently Cormidom has processed the sulphide ore successfully by implementing flotation modifications. This paper describes the history of Cormidom, test work on the “new” ore body, modification in process design in the Cu-Zn sulphide flotation circuit, construction and implementation.INTRODUCTIONCorporación Minera Dominicana (CORMIDOM) was a wholly owned subsidiary of GlobeStar Mining Corporation (a Canadian based minerals exploration company) with extensive exploration of base and precious metals in the Dominican Republic. In 2007-2008 CORMIDOM constructed the Cerro de Maimom project. The company was subsequently sold and purchased by Perilya Limited from Australia in 2013. Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 25,640 acres of the 29,680-acre Devil?s Garden Lava Bed, 21,040 acres of the 28,660-acre Squaw Ridge Lava Bed, and 9,100 acres of the 12,600-acre Four Craters Lava Bed Wilderness Study Areas (OR-D01-D02, OR-001-003, and OR-001-022, respectively) in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The study areas are located in Lake County, OR, about 50 air miles southeast of Bend. No mineral resources were identified in the three study areas. The areas are almost entirely underlain by recent lava flows. Cinder cones occur in each of the areas; however, the best cinder occurrences are in the Four Craters Lava Bed study area. Slab lava, of facing stone quality, is scattered throughout the Devil?s Garden Lava Bed study area, and to a lesser extent, in the Squaw Ridge Lava Bed study area.

Nowadays the development of automatic on-line sampling systems has enabled large amounts of data to be available to plant managers. These data are inevitably prone to random and sometimes systematic errors. Data reconciliation methods are used to deal with random errors. In these methods, the measured data are adjusted in accordance to their error, so that the mass conservation law is satisfied at the same time. Measured data may also contain systematic errors, using these data in mass balancing software will result in inaccurate or even irrational results. In this paper three methods for detecting systematic errors (global test, node constraint test and maximum power constraint test) were presented. A step by step method to locate the systematic errors was demonstrated. Then, the new version of Movazen©, a mass balancing software, was introduced and used to locate systematic errors in the measurements taken from the Sarcheshmeh pilot plant copper flotation circuit. One phase of this investigation is the burning of coal on an automatic stoker to gain the advantages of control, constant rate of application of heat, and ability to burn cheaper coal than can be used in the hand—fired furnaces of kilns. It a stoker in to be used it is desirable that the coot of the installation should be low, the control of operation simple, and the distribution of heat in the kiln as good or better than with hand firing. These desiderata were sought in the stoker and furnaces that were used for the tests described herein. The tests were made to determine whether it is feasible to fire a large kiln with a single stoker, whether the use of a single furnace simplifies control, and whether the admission of all the hot gam at the center of the kiln will give symmetrical distribution of heat."

La corrosivité des environnements miniers souterrains est un phénomène peu étudié au Canada. En plus de détériorer les systèmes de soutènement, la corrosion s?attaque aussi à divers installations et équipements souterrains. Cette étude, débutée en janvier 2007, est l?établissement d?une banque de données afin de caractériser les environnements miniers souterrains selon leur potentiel de corrosivité pour les systèmes de support de terrains. Pour ce faire, cinq (5) mines ont été sélectionnées afin de comparer les environnements : Laronde, Géant-Dormant, Niobec, Mouska et Doyon. À chacune des mines, trois (3) endroits ont été étudiés. Les résultats préliminaires démontrent une grande variabilité des conditions d?une mine à l?autre ainsi qu?à l?intérieur même d?une mine. La minéralogie des roches et du gisement influence la composition des eaux souterraines et la présence des sulfures joue un rôle important sur l?agressivité de l?eau et de l?air des mines de l?étude. Afin de déterminer le potentiel de corrosivité, plusieurs paramètres doivent être considérés et la mine doit être zonée selon l?agressivité des endroits.

EPA NRMRL Mine Waste Technology Program and Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting an in-situ technology demonstration at the Anchor Hill Pit Lake, Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site. The goal is to develop in-situ treatment cost/performance data for potential application in long-term water treatment/management at Gilt Edge and similar sites. The pit contained 77,000,000 gallons of pH 3water with elevated metals, sulfate, and nitrate. The Green World Science® patented process for in situ treatment was implemented to isolate and sequester metals; create stable long-term water quality and restore a sustainable ecosystem. COCs have decreased more than 99%, and dissolved discharge standards were attained.

ROASTING is usually thought of as a process in which finely crushed or ground ore is heated with air in a suitable furnace in which the ore is rabbled or agitated in such a way as to insure complete reaction between the oxygen of the air and the oxidisable constituents of the ore. Roasting in this sense is used only to a very limited extent in the iron and steel industry. This is because, in most iron ore deposits mined today, the ore is of a type that does not require roasting. Where this process is used, it is usually because of some special circumstance, such as a peculiar economic condition, that warrants it. If roasting is looked upon in the broader sense as a gas-solid chemical reaction carried out at an elevated temperature in which both gaseous and solid products are formed, then the process is used in the iron and steel industry to a greater extent
