Africa has a long history of mining and has been one’of the world’s greatest sources of gold and other mineral resources since the days of the Egyptian pharaohs. Mining in Africa has been dominated by South Africa since World War II. However, in the past 10 to 15 years, other African countries are beginning to slowly catch up with South Africa. Ghana, formerly called the “Gold Coast” is located on the West Coast of Africa. Ghana has been involved in mining activities for well over 100 years. Most of the mining activities centered on the mining of gold and were to a large extent limited to underground mining methods. With a more liberal economic policy regarding the exploration and exploitation of Ghana’s mineral resources, mining activities are beginning to evolve to a much larger scale. Drilling and blasting which is an important aspect of this evolution is also changing due to the involvement of foreign-based mining and explosives companies.

Arsenic plays a major role during electroreflning of copper. Both the arsenic content in the anode and the arsenic concentration of the electrolyte have, in conjunction with other impurities such as lead, antimony, bismuth and oxygen, a direct influence on the quality of the cathode. The mechanisms are currently slime. inclusion and precipitation of insoluble compounds in the bulk of the electrolyte. Arsenic has also been reported to have a depassivating effect on the anode. An influence on the anode slime adhesion has also been found. A literature survey is given and these data are compared with and completed by our own results based on lab and pilot scale experiments as well as on Olen tank.house practice.

Since the outbreak of the European war, few problems of raw-material supply have commanded more nation-wide attention than potash. It is well known that before the war the domestic production of potash was an insignificant percentage of the imports. The average annual importation of raw potash salts for several years prior to 1914 was slightly over 300,000 net tons, and of other potash manure salts about 700,000 tons. The sudden and almost total cessation of these imports created a unique and stringent situation. Methods of recovering potash from feldspar and other native mineral sources, and reclamation from hitherto waste products, have received a marked impetus. Soaring prices have been a keen incentive to research and industrial development. Although several brief articles concerning the possibilities of potash recovery have appeared in recent trade journals, it still may be a matter of some surprise to the average technical mind that potash might be reclaimed as a profitable byproduct in the manufacture of pig iron. At the present time it may be of special interest to present some data, largely of a technical nature, on this subject. A fairly thorough search of the literature reveals a number of articles concerning salts of the alkali metals in the blast furnace. Many of them deal with the theoretical rôle of alkali cyanides in the furnace. Several discuss the probable effect of the alkalies on the furnace brickwork. Two or three ambitious patents have been granted for reclaiming potash or other products from blast-furnace gas. However, we have heard nothing further as to the practical application of these patents. Little literature of importance has appeared during the last 10 years concerning alkalies in blast-furnace practice, and I have discovered no record whatsoever as to the actual sale or commercial disposal of flue dust for its potash content until this was inaugurated in our plant at Bethlehem. The oxygen activity of the ladle slag determines the reactivity towards the steel during ladle treatment. Therefore, the in situ measurement of the oxygen activity of slags can be an important tool. The applicability of an electrochemical sensor is examined in this work. The sensor measures the electromotive force (EMF) that is established between a sample of the slag phase that is immersed in the liquid steel bath and a reference system (Cr/Cr2O3). Industrial and laboratory experiments demonstrated the capability of the sensor to detect the influence of the slag components on the measured oxygen potential. Comparison of the measured values with thermodynamically calculated values shows that the measured oxygen activity is systematically too low. This was attributed to a reaction of the steel with the slag sample. To investigate this, further lab tests were performed where the slag oxygen activity was measured after the slag had been equilibrated with the steel. The measured values were dependent on the oxygen activity (aO) of the steel. For industrial applications, it is concluded that the aO of the steel should be known and that this value is necessary for the interpretation of the measured values. From March to May of 1963, the Bureau of Mineral Resources carried out an experimental aeromagnetic survey at Cobar, New South Wales, to field test a proton-precession magnetometer installation in the Cessna aircraft VH-GEO. The Cobar area was chosen as considerable information was already held on the Earth's magnetic field there, which was known to provide a range of anomalous areas that are not excessively disturbed.A procedure for survey flying and methods for processing data were developed during the survey. Contour maps of the aeromagnetic results were produced in the field. The experimental survey was successful in outlining magnetic anomalies in detail.INTRODUCTIONSince 1951 the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (B.M.R.) has carried out an airborne magnetometer exploration programme with DC.3 aircraft carrying fluxgate magnetometer equipment. Recently a proton-precession magnetometer was developed by the Design and Development Group of the B.M.R. for observatory use. One unit modified for airborne use was installed in the Cessna light aircraft, VH-GEO. The Cessna was modified structurally to take the magnetometer, associated bird, and winch gear.The proton-precession magnetometer has many good features.1. ABSTRACT Northern Saskatchewan boasts some of the world’s largest known high-grade uranium deposits. The successful mining of these deposits cannot be accomplished without overcoming technical challenges, however, which include high grade of the uranium ore, specialized mining methods to deal with groundwater at high pressures, and poor ground conditions. This paper discusses the various mechanisms of inflows at three of Cameco Corporation’s sites in northern Saskatchewan. The risk of inflows is quantified in terms of unique challenges due to hydrogeological conditions, rock mass integrity, and uncertainty in geological conditions. Strategies in the case of an inflow are also briefly described.

The roasting of sulphide ores and concentrates is often the first step in the production of metals or chemicals. In many processes, the production of sulphuric acid is viewed as a by-product, whereas in some plants production is an important economic factor. Regardless of the purpose, a pyrite roasting plant consists of mainly three plant sections: roasting, gas cleaning and sulphuric acid. With the addition of air, the pyrite concentrates are transformed into solid oxides and gaseous sulphur dioxide at temperatures of 600?1000°C. After cleaning and cooling, the sulphur dioxide in the roasting gas is further processed to sulphuric acid. Two types of reactors are used depending on the application: stationary or circulating fluid bed. For over 60 years, Outotec has progressively been developing the principle of fluidized bed technology in several different reactor types for a multitude of process applications. The versatility of the fluidized bed reactor system has manifested itself in the treatment of minerals, including solid fuels, and for metallurgical processes both in the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. Process applications have included roasting, calcining, combustion and charring of coals, as well as off-gas treatment. This paper provides a summary of the pyrite roasting technology currently used along with a simple cost comparison of pyrite roasting and sulphur burning processes.

Gwynfynydd is a small, high-grade black shale-hosted vein-gold deposit. The Chidlaw Link Zone is the only area being mined and contains 24 000 t ore grading 15.2 g/t gold. Within the Link Zone a complex vein structure occurs consisting of a mother vein up to 5 m thick and narrow (less than 0.5 m) leader veins. The former shows minor variations in dip, strike and thickness, whereas the latter show marked changes in all three. The leader veins are hosted within the footwall zone of the mother vein and both are composed of quartz with galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and minor arsenopyrite. The vein system is transected by a series of cross-vein and intra-vein dip-slip faults. Pockets of gold occur at vein intersections or branches and within the complex footwall zone and are often related to variations in vein attitude and/or geometry. The Chidlaw Link Zone displays a complex, erratic distribution of gold mineralisation and a multi-stage history of structural activity, fluid flow and mineral deposition

THE little town of San Nicolás, Tamaulipas, Mexico, lies approximately 60 miles east of Linares, situated in the State of Nuevo Leon, and 150 miles SE. of Monterey, as shown in the sketch-map. Fig. 1. The place is reached from Monterey by the Tampico train as far as Linares, a distance of 92 miles, and then by coach the rest of the way. It is situated in a narrow valley between low hills, the houses forming one main street and a plaza. It is peopled by about 500 inhabitants. The climate is temperate, the thermometer ranging from 90° in summer to a few degrees below freezing-point in winter; but this severe weather only lasts a day or two at a time, when the " northers " blow. There are no streams in the vicinity, but water sufficient for the use of the people is obtained from wells. The rainfall is about the same as that in the rest of NE. Mexico. The rainy months are July, August, and September. The rest of the year is practically dry, with an occasional showery day or two during the winter, when a " norther " is blowing. Timber is abundant in many localities. There are two varieties of oak, besides mesquite, ebony, "maguira," "patol," and a number of other kinds of trees indigenous to this region. I. HISTORY. On the discovery of the silver-lead hearing veins occurring in this district, the mining-camp of San Nicolás was founded in 1767 by the Spaniards, and numerous mines were opened and worked for a distance of abort 3 miles east and 5 miles west of the town. The fundamental principles by which bismuth may be removed from lead by pyrometallurgical processes are enumerated. Qualitative discussion of the phase diagrams concerned is followed by presentation of quantitative diagrams. Brief mention is made of the practical aspects. Data presented show how chemical lead (<0.005 pct Bi) may be produced by the Jollivet, Dittmer, and Kroll-Betterton processes. BISMUTH is an element whose properties are very similar to those of lead, and its minerals are associated to a greater or lesser extent with nearly all the major lead ore deposits of the world. In consequence, the lead produced contains bismuth unless a special debismuthizing process is practiced. There does not appear to be any published comprehensive review of the effect of bismuth as an impurity on the properties of lead, and there is some uncertainty as to the beneficial or detrimental effects of small amounts of bismuth in lead used for particular applications. Standard specifications of most countries stipulate a maximum bismuth content of 0.005 pct for chemical lead. With one exception, this specification is met only by lead producers whose ores are relatively bismuth-free, or whose refineries are electrolytic. In lead for certain applications a higher bismuth content is preferred by some fabricators.&apos; In contrast to the refining for silver, copper, and antimony, the refining for bismuth does not usually result in a large overalil economic gain from the sale of byproduct. Thus, debismuthizing is customarily practiced only if market conditions demand a lead with a bismuth content lower than that produced by classical refining; i.e., softening, desilverizing, and zinc refining. Until this century, debismuthizing was carried out only a:; an incidental result of desilverizing, as later described. This century has seen the development of the Betts electrolytic process—the only successful one of many electrolytic processes proposed and patented —and a number of precipitation processes based on the pioneering work of Kroll,&apos; although only one of these, the Kroll-Better ton process,&apos; is in wide commercial use today. It is proposed in this paper to deal only with the pyrometallurgical processes, excluding those based on aqueous electrolysis. Historical Background Prior to 1833 silver (and incidentally bismuth) could not be removed from lead. To recover silver from rich bullion, the only course available to lead refineries was to cupel the bullion, forming a slag of litharge. The first slag tappings or skimmings, on reduction, yielded soft lead of very low silver and bismuth contents. Intermediate skimmings yielded a lead of somewhat higher silver and bismuth contents, which could if desired be recupelled. The last skimmings yielded a litharge very high in bismuth, which could by successive oxidation and reduction cycles be separated into high purity bismuth, and lead returns. This oxidation reduction process, with modern operating techniques, can still be used today to produce a portion of a lead refinery&apos;s output of very low bismuth content, as discussed later. In 1833 Pattinsone discovered that lead bullion could be purified of silver and bismuth by fractional crystallization, the primary lead crystals formed by partial freezing being purer than the melt. "Antioquia region, in Colombia, is considered one of the areas with the highest mercury contamination in the world due to its use in gold recovery through artisanal mining, emissions to the environment between 100 and 150 tonnes of mercury are estimated by year. Therefore it became necessary to develop a project in which it was proposed aim to empower traditional artisanal mining community, or in different areas, such as gold mining in the region of Antioquia, in the implementation of safe mining practices and environmentally sustainable, from the introduction of clean technologies, in order to prevent or mitigate the impacts generated by traditional mining on the environment and the communities involved. In order to achieve this training to traditional mining community developed and technical visits to artisanal mining were performed in order to optimize operating processes and promote safe mining practices. In the project more than 1400 artisanal miners were trained.INTRODUCTION In the developing world, a combined 30 million individuals extract more than 30 different minerals using rudimentary techniques. Gold is the preferred mineral extracted by artisanal operators due to its high unit value and its market price, which has increased almost sevenfold over the last decade (Veiga et al, 2014). The artisanal gold mining sector in Colombia has 200,000 miners officially producing 30 tonnes Au/a. In the Northeast of the Department of Antioquia, there are 17 mining towns and between 15,000 and 30,000 artisanal gold miners (M. Veiga, 2010) (Upme, 2014). This production, however, has caused environmental problems, including high levels of river siltation and mercury pollution (Veiga et al, 2014) (UPME, 2007) (Cordy et al., 2013). The mercury contamination in Colombia by artisanal gold mining has been recognized by a number of researchers and local authorities for over a decade estimated that the annual mercury emissions from artisanal gold miners in Colombia in 2007 were between 50 and 100 tonnes, however given recent gold value increases and gold rush activity, current mercury emissions are likely much higher. Colombia is likely the world's 3rd largest source of mercury emissions from AGM after China (240 to 650 tonnes of Hg/a) and Indonesia (130 to 160 tonnes of Hg/a) (Telmer and Veiga, 2008) and is the world's highest per capita mercury polluter (M. Veiga, 2010)."

With the recent technological advances; Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) have become a viable economic alternative to drill and blast in hard rock excavation. These machines are finding increasing use in underground mine development due to the potential benefits they offer. The successful application of TBM technology to mining depends on the selection of the most suitable equipment and cutting tools for the rock and ground conditions to be encountered. In addition to required testing and geotechnical investigations, cutterhead design optimization is an integral part of the machine selection to assure a successful application of the machines in a specific project. This paper presents and discusses the back-ground of TBM application in a mining environment and the lessons learned, the process of conducting site investigation and the necessary laboratory testing together with machine selection and performance estimation for TBM use III mine development.

The author summarizes and extends the relevant results of papers previously published by various authors and presents these results in chart form. The charts are used to demonstrate the theory on a hypothetical mine.INTRODUCTIONRecently a series of articles have dealt with leakage in a mine ventilation system and the problem of its reduction.Theories were developed by Peascod and Keane (1955) for the combined effect of flow in the airways and leakage through the porous barrier between the intake and return of an ideal mine. Later Keane and Peascoa. (1956) extended these ideas to the use of an underground booster fan in increasing the face ventilation and showed how to determine the water gauge and location of the most efficient underground fan.These articles were based on the assumption that Atkin:son&apos;s formula:P = R Q2 (1)gave the relation between the pressure drop P lb&apos;/sq. ft., the quantity, Q kilocusecs, flowing in the mine airways and the total resistance, R Atkinsons, to air flow offered by the mine roadway. An Atkinson is defined as a resistance such that 1 kilocusec of air flows due to a pressure drop of 1Ib.jsq. ft. However for conditions prevailing in most mines a more :appropriate relation is that postulated by Reynolds and others (Lamb, 1953) :P=R Qn (2)where n has some value slightly less than 2. It should be noted that Atkinsons may not be used as units when n is not equal to 2.

While there could be as many directions on regulations as there are viewpoints surrounding the asbestos controversy, there are a few basic criteria that generally will influence government thinking, namely: - their definition of the problem to be regulated, - their interpretation of the scientific evidence available to them, and - their sensitivities to the views of, and the implications for, various interest groups in society. Clearly, different assessments of these criteria by various governments will lead to differing regulatory regimes. The consequence, of course, is a patchwork of non-conforming regulations among nations, with all that thin implies for the distortion of international trade and the unsettling of international relations. I would therefore argue that when governments are examining regulatory action, they should explicitly take into account their common interests in stable and cordial international relations, and when possible, efforts should be made to ensure that movement on regulation is at least, in principle, in accord with the general views of the international community.

X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of binary Mn-rich alloys with Ti revealed the presence of intermediate phases in this system. A binary R phase has been identified and also a phase having an a-Mn type structure. The X-ray pattern of the phase TiMn3 is presented and a tentative phase diagram for the Mn-rich portion of this binary system has been constndcted. MANGANESE-rich alloys with titanium have been subjected to thermal analysis at temperatures down to 1100°C by Hellawell and Hume-Rothery.1 Their results indicate the existence of an intermediate phase TiMn3 in this binary system. This phase appears to coexist with the Laves phase TiMn2, and with terminal solid solutions based on the allotropes of manganese, at least down to 1100°C. The above investigators did not attempt to determine the crystal structure of this phase, however. Since, by analogy to the binary systems Mn-V and Mn-Cr3 one might expect to find a phase in this region of the diagram, it seemed desirable to obtain X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys in the concentration range in question, in order to ascertain whether the sigma phase or related structures occur. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys were prepared by arc-melting electrolytic manganese and iodide titanium in a water-cooled copper crucible under a helium atmosphere. Excess manganese was added to each melt in order to allow for losses incurred during melting. The alloys were then wrapped in molybdenum foil and sealed in evacuated quartz tubes for annealing at various temperatures, as shown in Table I, followed by quenching in cold water. Although the inside of the tubes showed evidence for some loss of manganese from the specimen during annealing, there was no evidence of any reaction between the specimen and either the molybdenum foil or the quartz tube at these temperatures. It was later found that the manganese loss was considerably reduced by annealing these alloys in sealed quartz tubes containing one atmosphere of purified argon. As an added precaution the surface of each specimen was ground off before crushing the alloys to -270 mesh powder, using a hardened steel mortar and pestle. X-ray powder patterns were obtained using either FeKa or CrKa radiation in an asymmetrical focusing camera, which gave excellent dispersion of the closely spaced lines. Pictures were also obtained using a Debye camera of 5-cm radius which provided data in the angular region not covered by the focusing camera. The alloy specimens were polished and examined metallographically, using an etchant consisting of 60 pct glycerine, 20 pct nitric acid, and 20 pct hydrofluoric acid. The 10-g buttons were in each case broken in half and found to be well-melted and free of any gross segregation. One half of certain alloy buttons was submitted to chemical analysis in the "as-cast" condition. No appreciable change in composition seemed to occur during annealing . Specifically, the effects of preferential classification, bypassed fines, and the sharpness of classification will be examined. Horizontal cyclones have also proven to be very successful in a number of operations but their impact on the circuit capacity has not been clearly defined.

"A computer-based approach to online supervisory control and operations management of bulk materials handling terminals". This paper describes an integrated computer facility supporting the functions and responsibilities of shift operations, scheduling, maintenance and management using real-time interactive techniques. The functions and responsibilities as related to coal export terminals are specifically addressed, although these functions would be equally applicable to other terminal configurations and other commodities. A discussion of the resulting benefits are presented: - throughput efficiency - long-term planning and scheduling, using simulation - operations monitoring and protection - demurrage/despatch optimization - preventative maintenance - operational productivity

Oils from coal hydrogenation have been examined at the Bureau of Mines to learn whether any centers of the optical activity reported in coal would survive catalytic hydrogenation at 450-525 ° C and about 8,000 psig pressure , and , if so , to obtain information about the nature of the active products . Oils from carbonization tars also were examined . Optical activity was found in the majority of the distillate fractions of the hydrogenation oils and in almost all distillates from the carbonization tars . No activity was observed in the tar - acid and tar - base fractions examined . Methods for isolating optically active concentrates included distillation through a packed column , liquid chromatography on silica gel , and adduction with urea . For the materials so processed , the optical activity segregated mainly in the paraffin - naphthenic and the hydroaromatic fractions . Although the specific compounds responsible for the optical activity were not isolated , experimental and spectrometric findings indicate that alkylsubstituted cycloalkane , cycloalkene , and hydroaromatic structures are most likely responsible for the optical activity of the concentrates . The optically active centers probably derived mainly from the steroids and terpenes in the biological materials that participated in the formation of coal .

INTRODUCTION AND SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES An area in the midwest overlying abandoned room-and-pillar mine workings at, shallow depth has been experiencing subsidence movements with associated damage to surface structures. Other coal companies in the area have also been having similar experience. A 16 - month cooperative study between a mining company and the Department of Mining Engineering at SIUC was developed with the following objectives. 1) Determine the extent to which surface and subsurface movements were complete in the area, 2) Identify the mechanism(s) of subsidence in the area, 3) Determine the influence of geology and hydrology of the area on subsidence movements, 4) Observe the conditions of abandoned underground workings with a borehole TV camera, 5) Characterize the extent of damage and monitor possible progressive damage to selected surface structures, and 6) Make recommendations to a) minimize further damage to surface structures in the area, b) identify future areas that may be affected by these movements and c) modify mining systems to minimize these movements.

We define a specialized mineral market as follows: Specialized Markets are markets where a low volume of a given mineral is used to convey a large benefit to a specific product. Sales of these value added minerals to small markets generally require a different marketing approach compared to bulk or commodity markets for traditional minerals. Specialized and commodity markets are differentiated by several characteristics as listed in Table 1.
