The basic chemistry of a1•senic related to its dissolution and subsequent precipitation in gold-mine waste waters is discussed. The lime addition methods provides the most economic treatment of arsenical slurries, but requires a careful control of the oxidation of Asm into Asv, of the pH (>12) and the filtration of the precipitate. If arsenic levels below 0.5 mg/ l are required, a modification of the method by phosphate addition must be considered.

Construction of a pump station, consisting of an inlet chamber, wet well and pump chamber, required excavation to a depth of 9.7 m (32 ft) below ground surface and more than 7.6 m (25 ft) below the ground water table in a rural, but rapidly developing part of southern New Jersey. Private houses are located [ ] within a few hundred feet of the pump station that use shallow wells for water supply. The pump station design anticipated support of the entire pump station on shallow foundations bearing directly on the underlying natural soils. However, during construction, uncontrolled ground water flow caused ground loss and damage to the bearing qualities of foundation soils. As a result, remedial repairs were required including support of the pump station on drilled pile foundations and releveling of the pump chamber that had settled. This case study is an example of where a poor understanding of the significance of upward flowing ground water had a major impact on the cost of construction. Anticipated subsurface conditions The pump station layout is shown in Fig. 1 with the locations of two borings made prior to construction superimposed. One of the borings was located within the footprint of the deep wet well excavation. Generally, this is not advisable where a deep excavation is required below the ground water table. This is because there is a history of projects where ground water seepage, or pressure, has broken out into an excavation through an ungrouted borehole and compromised the integrity of foundation soils. Logs of the borings did not indicate that the borings [ ] were grouted upon completion.

This paper describes the design, manufacture and site services associated with the supply of mine hoists for the new mine under construction by Falconbridge Limited in Ontario, Canada. Two new shafts are being sunk, and the hoisting equipment at each shaft can be summarised as follows: Ventilation shaft:4.66 m diameter double-drum second-hand hoist, originally in operation at San Manuel Mine, Arizona, to be used as the shaft sinking hoist. The second-hand hoist presented a challenge in that during its previous life, the hoist had been intensively operated during service at San Manuel Mine, and this paper describes the scope of refurbishment work undertaken, both electrically and mechanically, to ensure future reliable operation, together with the requirement to meet Canadian and Ontario regulations and codes of practice. 3.05 m diameter new single drum auxiliary hoist to be used as a second means of egress. Main shaft:4.57 m diameter new double-drum hoist to be used initially as the shaft sinking hoist, and subsequently to be converted to the equivalent of a single-drum multi-rope hoist for service duties during the production phase; 5.49 m diameter new double-drum hoist to be used for skip hoisting during the production phase; and 3.05 m diameter new single drum auxiliary hoist.The new hoists are all designed to comply with SABS requirements such that hoisting with reduced rope safety factors will be possible in the future. This paper describes the principles involved both mechanically and electrically. Particular attention is paid to the conversion of the main shaft service hoist from a double-drum sinking hoist to a multi-rope hoist.This paper describes the ac electrical powertrains (drives and motors) used that eliminate the need for harmonic filters and reactive power compensation equipment since they exhibit no negative effects on the utility electrical network system. This paper describes the logistical challenges of installing, commissioning and setting to work a series of five hoists in a short time frame.

Aggressive driving patterns, rough and poorly maintained roads and pit floors, along with the occasional bump and poorly placed load from a shovel can create intense and sometimes serious vibration levels on a heavy hauler. The effects of high vibration have been shown to be of concern for the health of the operator as well as the reliability of the equipment. It is proposed that an onboard vibration warning system based on the ISO 2631-1 standard could be used to help operators reduce the vibration levels experienced in a heavy hauler. The onboard system would consist of a screen that displays the instantaneous vibration in the form of three lights: green (safe zone), yellow (cautious zone), and red (danger zone), as well as an overall vibration exposure or dose for the entire shift. With the utilization of the warning system, it is anticipated that the overall vibration levels will be decreased resulting in improved operator health, a reduction of vibration-induced maintenance, and improved haul roads through reduced impact loading and repair for localized trouble areas.

"The Port Mann Main Water Supply Tunnel project provides a critical water main crossing of the Fraser River for the owner, Greater Vancouver Water District (Metro Vancouver). The project consists of two 60-metre-deep slurry panel shafts and a 1-kilometre-long, 3.5-metre excavated diameter tunnel located near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The initial tunnel lining is a precast concrete steel fiber reinforced gasketed segmental lining. The final lining is a 2.1-metre-diameter welded steel pipe. This paper describes the challenges encountered during tunnel construction and the solutions implemented. Key challenges include earth pressure balance tunnelling at up to 6 bar pressure—the highest to date in Canada—a water-crossing without surface access for the majority of the tunnel drive, ground freezing from a river platform for a critical TBM intervention, and boring through cobbles and boulders in dense glacial till. INTRODUCTION Metro Vancouver supplies drinking water to 18 municipalities, one electoral district and one treaty first nation, serving a population of more than 2.4 million residents. Water is collected in three mountainous watersheds to the north of the Greater Vancouver area, in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. To supply the growing demands of Metro Vancouver’s customers, treated water must be conveyed across two significant water bodies: the Burrard Inlet and the Fraser River. The existing Port Mann water main is one of several key links between the watersheds north of Vancouver and the municipalities south of the Fraser River. The Port Mann Main Water Supply Tunnel (PMMWST) is the first of a series of upgrades, to increase capacity, enhance scour protection, and improve seismic resilience. The new tunnel is 3.5 metres (11.5 ft) in diameter and 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) long. When completed, it will contain a new 2.1 metre (7 ft) diameter steel water main that will help ensure the continued, reliable delivery of drinking water to these municipalities, and will more than double the capacity of the existing 1.2 metre diameter main."

Development of Grindability Tests Based on Direct Measurement of Energy Nowadays, for the characterisation of the grindability different grindability indices - Bond-work index (Wi), Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) or Zeisel specific grindability (Wt) - are used. Generally, the grindability tests are carried out under relatively simplified circumstances, in a special dry batch mill with defined feed size material until prescribed conditions are reached at room temperature. However, in the fine- and ultra fine grinding, which is a frequent task (fly ash, tailings, alumina, etc), a fine material (<50 - 200 ¦m) is usually ground down to the few micrometers. The conventional grindability testing methods and apparatuses (Bond-, Hardgrove-, Zeisel-processes) for their determination, although, are not suitable directly to measure the grindability of such fine materials, since the maximal particle size of the feed material (0.5 - 3 mm) to be tested is much higher. One of the important goals of the research carried out in our Institute was to develop the novel grindability testing methods, which are suitable for the fine and ultra fine grinding, and additionally provide the possibility for the fast determination of the grindability. In order to realise the above aim the conventional Bond- and Hardgrove- mills were modified in order to directly measure the grinding work. In particular, the Hardgrove-mill was equipped with a simple torque-meter (load cell). The Bond-mill was rigged with a digital electric power measurer. The systematic experiments were carried out parallel in both mills using the conventional and the developed methods. Finally the results of both were compared. The measuring results have proved that the Bond-work index can be determined based on the developed methods. The new grindability testing methods were applied successfully in several industrial research tasks for the determination of the specific grinding energy and the Bond-work index. These methods can be also used in the industrial practice for the control of the grinding process.

The property of the Cupric Mines Co. is situated in the San Francisco mining district, Beaver County, Utah, 21 miles westerly from Milford (fig. 1), the rail and supply center for the area. Scheelite mineralization was not discovered until 1941, although the occurrence of lead and copper minerals had been known previously. S. VI. Hobbs, of the Federal Geological Survey, examined the Cupric property in November 1941 and prepared topographic and geologic maps of the area. This work was supplemented by additional investigations in January 1943 and March 1944 (fig. 2).

The basic control system is outlined, with sections devoted to emergency trips and differential braking, and the application of the system to deep shaft hoisting is discussed.

The lining systems currently in use in BOF furnaces, certain steel ladles, and the slag line of electric are furnaces were developed during the late seventies through the mid-eighties using a trial and error method of combining aggregate, carbon sources, additives and binders. They are currently based on magnesia, graphite, metal additives and resin binders, the selections of each being tied to the anticipated intensity of the use conditions. The general functions of the respective constituents are well appreciated, however, there is still a great deal that is not known about how the socalled antioxidants protect the graphite nor how impurities from the graphite and the aggregate enter into the wear processes. In a simplified assessment of wear processes, it appears that if the deoxidized layer can be kept very thin, less than 810 mm in depth, and if the viscosity and quantity of the matrix glassy phases can be controlled to resist erosion of the deoxidized layer, lining life can be maximized for the various applications. This paper will discuss the characteristics of the starting materials systems currently being employed for applications requiring a deoxidation function to realize extended wear. It will not attempt to explain all the complex interrelationships between the respective constituents but will point to the potential for improvements through the use of improved constituents.

INTRODUCTION THE Darwin District is 30 miles east of Olancha which is 220 miles north from Los Angeles via U. S. Highway No. 6. The ore deposits occur in the Darwin hills that have been elevated above the Darwin Plateau by typical basin and range-type faults. Some of these faults have been active quite recently as shown by the displacement of Quaternary (?) basalt flows and the rejuvenation of erosion in Darwin wash. The ore bodies occur as fissure fillings and replacement of favorable beddings in a thick series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites. Rich oxidized lead-silver ores were discovered in the early seventies. By 1875, Darwin had a population of about 5000, and by 1880 several small mills and smelters had been built. Early exhaustion of surface ores, the isolated location of the district, and fluctuation of metal prices caused intermittent operations until World War II. The district production is estimated at about $3,000,000 prior to 1900 and perhaps $4,000,000 between 1900 and 1945 when Anaconda purchased the major producing mines. For the past two years, daily production has averaged 75 tons of direct shipping and 150 tons of milling-grade ore. At present, 300 tons of mixed oxide and sulphide ore are treated by flotation, the oxidized lead minerals being activated by addition of sodium sulphide after galena and sphalerite have been recovered from the circuit. Extraction averages 85 pct of the lead, 80 pct of the silver, and about 33 pct of the zinc in a bulk concentrate. The mill is designed so that minor changes permit selective flotation of pyritic lead-zinc ores encountered at depth. GENERAL GEOLOGY The oldest rocks in the Darwin hills are a series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites probably Pennsylvanian in age. These rocks have been intruded on the west by the Coso granite batholith and on the east by a granodiorite stock. Numerous sills and dikes grading from orthoclase granite to gabbro are exposed in the underground workings. The sedimentary rocks have been considerably folded and faulted, the most prominent structure being a northwest pitching anticlinal fold, the crest of which lies just west of the ridge line of the Darwin hills. The east limb of this fold has been intruded by the granodiorite stock and east of the stock the sediments show several closely spaced anticlines and synclines. The minor flexures on the west flank of the major fold are structurally important in localizing the ore in the Defiance and Essex mines of the Darwin group. There are three principal systems of faulting and fissuring, most of which are post-intrusive and premineral in age, with minor amounts of postmineral movement. Musculoskeletal injury is a term used to describe a wide range of soft tissue disorders which affect the nerves, tendons, and muscles. Common examples include lower back pain, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. The majority of these injuries are not the result of sudden mishaps, but usually develop gradually from repeated wear and tear. Symptoms may first appear after weeks, months, or even years. Symptoms may result from many types of activities, performed at work or at home, and it is often difficult to attribute a single event. In fact, it is more common to identify the factors which may have contributed to the development of the condition. The terms repetitive strain injuries or cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) have been commonly used to refer to disorders that have occurred due to work related activities (Putz-Anderson, 1988; Fraser, 1989). Three main risk factors contribute to CTDs: force, repetition, and awkward postures. Any one or combination of these may contribute to the development of CTDs. Therefore, the design of equipment in conjunction with the required tasks should attempt to reduce these risk factors. Examining the layout of the work area to help identify tasks which may contribute to cumulative trauma is necessary. Many mines rely on toxic gas sensors to help maintain a safe and healthy work environment. This report describes a prototype monitoring system developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) that uses light to power and communicate with several remote toxic gas sensors. The design is based on state-of-the-art optical-to-electrical power converters, solid-state diode lasers, and fiber optics. This design overcomes several problems associated with conventional wire-based systems by providing complete electrical isolation between the remote sensors and the central monitor. The prototype performed well during a 2-week field trial in the USBM Pittsburgh Research Center Safety Research Coal Mine.

The proton NMR spectra of 32 pyridines in two solvents, carbon tetrachloride and benzene-d6, are presented. The chemical-shift and differential-shift values are correlated with the substitutent position and with the solvent media. The ring protons and the protons on alkyl substituents are tabulated. The paramagnetic shift of the protons adjacent to the nitrogen is discussed, and a proposed structure for the pyridine-benzene complex that is consistent with the observed anomalous paramagnetic shift is presented. The utility of the data in the identification of pyridine compounds found in shale-oil naphtha is demonstrated.

Traditionally in coal processing jigs have been used to clean the coarse coal fraction, the +3/8" or +1/4" material. Today with the advent of modern fine coal jigs in the United States, its place was moved from the coarse to the inter- mediate coal circuit, the 3/8" x 100 mesh. The most economical coarse coal circuit to build and operate is a heavy media bath circuit. The following table summarizes the cost per raw coal ton processed for a coarse coal jig circuit, and a coarse coal heavy media bath circuit. The flowsheets used to compare these two circuits are shown in Figures 1 and 2.

This paper describes the use of post- tensioned rock anchors to reduce the risk of future damage to a residential structure as a result of coal mine subsidence. The project described in this paper was performed by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) of the U. S. Department of the Interior. The OSMRE was created to administer Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. The responsibilities of OSMRE include "reclamation and restoration of land and water resources, adversely affected by past coal mining including prevention, abatement, control of coal mine subsidence. ?('l) Consequently, OSMRE has been addressing mine subsidence problems since its initial subsidence stabilization project in 1979. Stabilization activities have primarily consisted of supporting the overburden material by injecting materials through drilled bore holes into the underground mine voids. Injection of various materials into mine voids, including fly ash mixtures, coal refuse, cement grout, and gravel has proven to be a successful method of reducing mine subsidence-related surface movements, and has been extensively utilized in mitigating mine subsidence problems. However, the cost of drilling for injection can be extremely high in areas where the depth to the coal seam is great.

Over the last forty years, a number of specific fluidized bed applications in nickel extraction have been developed for commercial use. Five important processes have gained particular acceptance, namely, sulphide ore roasting, nickel sulphide (matte) roasting, nickel oxide reduction, laterite ore pre-reduction, and nickel chloride pyrohydrolysis. These applications involve different feed materials and process conditions, however, all benefit from fast reaction kinetics and high heat and mass transfer rates in the fluidized bed reactors. They have been studied, tested, and implemented by various nickel producers, who have published their results in many papers and patents. This paper examines the design issues surrounding the application of fluidized bed technology to the above nickel processes. Based on the available data in the open literature, computerized process modelling is used to provide generic flowsheets that illustrate the key features of each process.

This paper3 describing the mining methods at the Page mine operated by the Federal Mining & Smelting Co., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Page mine is the most westerly of the producing lead-silver-zinc mines in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of Idaho, being situated 5 miles west of the city of Kellogg and at an elevation of 2,677 feet above sea level. It may be classed as one of the new active producers, of the district and owes its present activity largely to the development of floatation.

"INTRODUCTION Peat is the accumulated mass of plant materials that remain after partial decay under specific conditions. In the swampy peat bogs dead material which falls on the surface immediately is attacked by fungi and aercbic bacteria. Decay under these conditions is rapid, but of relatively short duration, since the constant addition of new material soon forces the older layers below the water level, in this position, without access to oxygen, the plant constituents are attacked mainly by anaerobic bacteria, and decomposition proceeds slowly. The largest part of peat is contributed by the woody tissues of plants, the chief constituents of which are cellulose and lignin, together with a small proportion of hemicelluloses. During the normal process of biological decay celluloses disappear more rapidly than lignin. The result is a complex substance known as humin, from which the humic acids may be extracted.In 1826, Sprengel 5 found that when decayed plant materials were extracted with alinnli and the resulting black liquid acidified with mineral acid a brown gelatinous precipitate was formed. To this product, which was a brown amorphous powder when dry, he gave the name ""humic acid'. Since that time, chemists have used the name rather loosely to designate products which have been isolated by very diverse means from soils, decayed woods, peat, lignite, and coal. An excellent review of the early work on humic acids was published by Baumann 6 in 1909. This publication aroused the interest of Oden, who then investigated the humic acids. An account of Oden’s work, as a good survey of the literature, is contained in his monograph “Die Huminsauren”. 7"
