The Zelazny Most Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is the largest reservoir of post–flotation tailings in Europe. The total amount of tailings from the mines in Lubin, Rudna, and Polkowice are stored each year at the disposal facility, which reaches approximately 30 million tons. It is crucial to accurately monitor and maintain such a huge storage facility, for the safety and economics of the entire region. In general, the monitoring network installed at the Zelazny Most TSF includes four groups of components: (a) geotechnical network (VW pore pressure transducers and inclinometers), (b) hydrological network (open piezometers, water level gauges, drainage discharge measurements, (c) geodetic survey network (e.g. surface and in-depth benchmarks, laser measurements, GPS measurements within GEOMOS network and (d) seismic network (e.g. accelerometer stations, cone penetration tests.) Apart from the above, chemical water analyses, tests of soil samples, monitoring of spigotting processes, and monitoring of relief wells’ discharge are also conducted. In total, approximately 2900 monitoring instruments are installed within the area of the Zelazny Most TSF. Such large amounts of data from the various information sources makes manual data analysis by the engineers almost impossible. In this paper we discuss a machine learning driven approach to improve the quality of the monitoring and maintenance of such facilities. We focus on the seismic cone penetration test (SCPT) data analysis. First, we carefully describe the collected data, its quality and availability. Then we discuss possible events that can occur in the TSF that need to be predicted using SCPT. Based on the information obtained in these two steps, the applicability of several machine learning methods is estimated. Some of them are then tested on available historical data. The algorithms described in this article will be further developed in the IlluMINEation project (H2020).

The segregation process consists of heating crushed oxidized or mixed oxide-sulfide copper are with a copper-volatilizing salt and carbonaceous material at about 750° C. to produce metallic copper which is recovered from the furnace calcines by conventional sulfide flotation. The Bureau of Mines made a number of bench-scale laboratory tests on two copper ores to determine the relative merits of using halogen salts, potassium chlorate, or various salt mixtures as volatilizing agents in segregation of the copper. Laboratory investigation of typical siliceous and calcareous oxidized ores revealed that sodium chloride was a better segregating agent than the other salts. Calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium fluoride, or potassium chlorate gave nearly as good segregation as the sodium chloride on the siliceous ore. Segregation of the calcareous ore with calcium chloride was nearly as good as that obtained with sodium chloride, but inferior segregation resulted when magnesium chloride, sodium bromide, or potassium chlorate was employed. The use of sodium bromide or sodium iodide on the siliceous ore, and of sodium fluoride or sodium iodide on the calcareous are, gave appreciably poorer segregation than sodium chloride or the other salts. Other tests of the ores, using mixtures of sodium chloride and the other halogen salts or potassium chlorate, gave segregation approaching that obtained with sodium chloride.

Middelburg mine is an opencast export mine operating in the Eastern Transvaal Coalfields of the Republic of South Africa (Figure 1). The mine was commissioned in 1983, to its original design capacity of 4.25 million sales tonnes which was subsequently raised to 5.5 million sales tonnes in 1989. This increase in export tonnage was brought about through an increase in the mines export allocation and the revision of management strategies. The maintenance of this increased tonnage with minimal additional capital has been achieved through improved operational efficiencies and the upgrading of planning operations through the purchase of an Enhanced Mine Scheduling Software Package (EMSSP/MINESTAR). Simultaneously with this requirement were additional factors that contributed to the implementation of the EMSSP. The mine was owned by a joint venture of two partners and is operated by Middelburg Mine services (Rand Mines Pty. Ltd) (Figure 2). This structure of ownership required the evaluation of numerous planning options to be under-taken concurrently and hence the need for an efficient streamlined scheduling pack-age that could fulfill this requirement. Compounding the EMSSP needs further, were the problems experienced in the export market, these being the external pressure from current and new suppliers in the market place which obliged management to provide solutions to rapidly changing market conditions. These fluctuating market conditions have had a direct effect upon the mine's planning strategies because of the large percentage of the mine?s sales sold on the international spot market. The sanction factor for all South African exporters has had a negative effect upon price and this was compounded further through internal competition in 1987 via suppliers attempting to maintain the market position.

ESSENTIAL requirements for ensuring safe working atmospheres in underground metal mines are planned systems of ventilation and provision for effective distribution of sufficient volumes of air by auxiliary equipment. Investigators1 in the past have suggested that quantities of air supply ranging from 300 to 800 cu. ft. of air per minute per man underground are necessary, to establish adequate general ventilation. These fundamentals are just as important as the use of water in dust suppression, control of blasting, the use of personal protective equipment, frequent inspection of working areas and education of employees in good dust-prevention practice. During the past two years the necessity for direct control of the underground working environment has become particularly urgent. The increase in production rate, with two-shift and three-shift operation replacing the single shift, has complicated the problem of dealing with excessive concentrations of blasting fumes and gases, carbon dioxide and monoxide, heat and oxygen deficiency. Although previous industrial hygiene programs had given consideration to these factors, they were generally regarded by mine operators as secondary to the control of dust hazards. Today, blasting smoke in a mining area means delayed production because the miner cannot return to his work place after a short interval. Smoke on the haulage level means a safety hazard and exposure of the underground employees to excessive concentrations of atmospheric contaminants. Exposure to the moderately excessive concentrations of carbon dioxide and monoxide found in metal mines has caused physiological disturbances and a decreased capacity for work; deficiency of oxygen, in some cases to as low as 3 per cent, has resulted in fatalities. During the past 10 years the Saranac Laboratory2 has been associated with the iron mines in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin in developing and maintaining an industrial hygiene and silicosis-prevention program. At present, about 35 underground iron-ore mines are operated full time in this area. With two exceptions, all of them are ventilated by main fan installations installed either on surface or underground. ,The types of mining used in these mines may be classified either as sublevel cave, radial top slice or sublevel stope, and the procedures commonly employed in the ventilation of these three types are described in Figs. 1 and 2. A number of different methods of mine ventilation had been in use in this area when the study was started. Natural ventilation had proved unsatisfactory. The wide variation between low air volumes during the summer months and higher volumes during winter led to unpredictable conditions that were difficult to control. On June 25, 1999, BHP Billiton (BHPB) announced the suspension of operations at the BHP Copper Inc.(BHP) San Manuel copper mine in Pinal County, Arizona. Subsequent to this announcement, BHPB aggressively pursued a number of alternatives for the underground mine and open pit facilities, including continued curtailed operations, sale to a qualified mining operator and closure of the property. After consideration of these various alternatives over a 2.5-year period, BHPB announced final closure of the mine site on January 15, 2002.This paper describes how the BHPB charter and HSEC policy apply during the closure process.

This information circular describes open-pit mining methods and practices of the Bagdad Copper Corp., Yavapai County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. A brief history of the Eureka district and of early developments at the [gdad] mine is given, and the are deposit is described with particular emphasis on those characteristics (physical, economic, or engineering) that affected the choice of mining methods. Prospecting, exploration, and sampling and estimating the tonnage and grade are outlined. Development of the open-pit mine is shown. Mining methods, including breaking ground, primary drilling and blasting, secondary drilling and blasting, loading, transportation, engineering, and operating control, are described. A brief summary of mining equipment is given. Percentage of extraction, production rate, mine drainage and water supply, wage, contract, and bonus systems, safety and fire prevention, and the processing plant also are described. The last section gives a breakdown of such costs as are available for publication.

"SUMMARYFollowing a magnetometer survey on the McCoy iron deposit, a trenching and drilling program was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in August 1944.This deposit is 32.3 miles southwest of Battle Mountain in the McCoy Mining District, Lander County, Nevada, and lies on the east flank of the Fish Creek Mountains at an altitude of 5,400 feet, about 1 1/2 miles south of the gold camp of McCoy.Total production from the deposit has been 400 tons of magnetite, mined by hand and shipped to the west coast for ship's ballast.Bureau drilled two holes to a total depth of 92 feet and excavated 12 feet of trenches. Both holes were drilled in the same ore body and engineered magnetite ore 14 and 11 feet thick. Trenching was used successfully to show the lateral limits of the ore.Magnetite ore bodies were found to occur as replacements of a limestone bed in quartzite. They outcrop near and parallel to the exposure of a diorite entrusting that forms a long westward-trending ridge. Although magnetic outcrops can be traced for 5,000 feet trenching definitely proved the ore bodies to be disconnected to have little or no lateral extent beyond their outcrops. Only two ore bodies more than 10 feet thick were found; one of these is the inaccessible to and the other was drilled by the Bureau."

In recent years many mining companies have recognized that their chance for continued economic survival depends on the adaptation of technological advances in their operations. Increased productivity through new developments in mining methods and improvements in equipment has made mining and processing of lower grade ores possible. Cost analysis has produced accurate data on the costs for development, production, and processing of ore. All of these changes and cost studies have shown the necessity for increased accuracy in determining the grade of ore. Methods of estimating grade in a mineral deposit have not kept pace with the technological advances in the other areas. The same methods are in use today as in the past. Experience and judgment are major criteria of accuracy and the results are highly subjective. In 1953, as part of its research program to develop a better understanding of fundamentals of mining technology, the Federal Bureau of Mines began a sampling method research project at its Denver Mining Research Center. The basic objective of the project is to investigate sampling methods and to study the adaptation of the techniques of statistical analysis to mine sampling.

A detailed experimental study of breakage kinetics in a batch rod mill indicates that while the system is inherently nonlinear, the feed disappearance kinetics for the finer sizes and the coarser sizes at high holdups is well represented by first-order behavior. The set of breakage distribution functions was found to be normalizable and independent of particle holdup in the mill. The size discretized initial breakage rate functions were found to be inversely proportional to particle holdup and almost directly proportional to particle size. A linearized grinding model that results from the first-order Taylor's series expansion of the breakage rate expression was found to give good simulations of the mill product size distributions without recourse to any parameter improvement routines. Material transport through rod mills was evaluated by investigating the effect of operating variables on the holdup and residence time distribution of particulate solids flowing through the mill. Identical experiments performed in a continuous ball mill helped delineate the fundamental differences in particulate transport through these two types of mills. Mechanistic interpretations of the observed transport phenomena are presented, and their implications in the context of tumbling mill analysis and design pointed out.

This paper describes the loading to 25MN of a 1.2m diameter bored cast-in-situ test pile founded in the Thanet Sand which was base grouted. The pile was sleeved over the major portion of its length to test primarily the base response of the pile. The results are presented and compared with similar pile load tests in Thanet Sand.

"Xstrata Nickel’s Raglan operation, northern Québec, achieved paymetal recovery gains in 2007 by switching the collector from potassium amyl xanthate to sodium isobutyl xanthate. To follow on from that position, Xstrata Process Support (XPS) and A. Di Feo of Raglan proposed that a mixed xanthate system be formulated and tested towards further performance gains. This work selected ethyl and isobutyl xanthates as the candidates. An optimized ratio of these was to be determined by a designed experiment. This suggestion was based on an abundance of published literature that reported mixed collector systems outperformed single ones. A partial factorial design was used to configure four test conditions and a mid-square for the flotation work. The testwork was conducted using High Confidence Flotation Testing. The raw data were analyzed and modelled by Design-Expert software. An optimum ratio of 1.6:1.0 by mass (1.32:1.0 in molar terms) of isobutyl:ethyl xanthate was determined. Without this modelling, the optimum ratio would have been missed. Results obtained with the new baseline flotation test using this optimized mixture showed a 3.3% Ni recovery gain in the bypass concentrate and more than 1% recovery gain for PGM over the single PIBX system. The image of the open-pit miner in the eyes or the Environmentalist has never been very outstanding. The phosphate industry, whose history in Florida reaches back to the late 1800's, can-not be credited until recently with a large number or accomplishments in terms of protection or the environment to change this image. This lack of action was not deliberate or in opposition with the desires of the public. In the formative years, there was little or no public and the companies found it necessary to build towns to house their employees and their families, towns which remained in existence until the late 50's and early 60's or formed the core of present large communities. Neither these pioneers nor most subsequent resource developers considered themselves un-thinking spoilers, nor were they so regarded by their contemporaries. Instead, they acted in a manner consistent with their environmental circumstances and intellectual heritage. Early Americans did make mistakes in using the land but the mistakes became apparent only in the opinion of later generations. Over the past five to ten years, there has been a new self-awareness in the industry with regard to environmental responsibilities brought about, in part by a continuing onslaught of new regulations with jurisdiction over our activities. Part of the new regulations are aimed at industries as a whole while many, particularly state regulations, pertain specifically to the phosphate mining industry. Why all the new regulations? The reasons are encased in a complex web of activity but stem primarily from a new public awareness of its environment. More and more of our youth have become interested in the environmental science areas such as biology and ecology. The tremendous growth rate in both the population and industry has made personal issues out of subjects such as atmospheric inversions and water shortages which previously were abstract concepts. The State has grown from a population of 1,500,000 in 1930 to approximately 9,000,000 people today. This personal impact and general lack of knowledge on the part of the public concerning economics has resulted in big business no longer being held in awe, often in contempt and generally in suspicion where environmental concerns are encountered.

In many developing countries, asbestos is still used for friction products, insulation, and asbestoscement products. However, there is very limited modern data evaluating the airborne concentrations of asbestos fibers in operating asbestos plants. We have conducted an Industrial Hygiene survey, using state of the art PCM and TEM analysis, of a Bolivian asbestos cement plant that uses crocidolite during the production of roofing shingles and water tanks. The study is the first to use modern analytical measurements in an uncontrolled asbestos environment. Thus, this study offers insight into the historical airborne exposures at asbestos plants operating before modern dust control measures were introduced or airborne fiber levels regulated. The results suggest that fiber concentrations are far in excess of those for which current models would predict the onset of asbestos disease and mesothelioma. Significantly, the plant and community do not have an elevated incidence of asbestos disease or mesothelioma. Airborne fiber levels during comminution and fiber sizing ranged from 100 to as much as 1,000 f/cc. Fiber levels in the mixing, forming and finishing areas ranged from 0.5 to 9 f/cc. Based on the number of overloaded samples and estimates of their concentration, historical estimates of exposure may be underestimated by an order of magnitude. Also, an excellent correlation (1:1) between the PCM and TEM fiber concentrations (for fibers _0.25 um diameter) were obtained, raising questions about the conventional wisdom that the PCM systematically undercounts fibers. The results of this study further indicate that current models may overestimate the risk of asbestos disease and mesothelioma.

"SynopsisThis paper assesses the effectiveness of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH) and its potential to improve mine health and safety in South African mines. Developed by the Chamber of Mines, which represents the majority of the country's large scale mining employers, MOSH was devised to accelerate progress towards achieving health and safety milestones, which were set by tripartite agreement in 2003. The paper documents and builds on the findings of a study conducted by the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) in 2011 that evaluated MOSH strategy, structures, and process of implementation.The study found that MOSH operated across the mining sector, was directed and dominated by experts and, despite best efforts to include other stakeholders, was led by employers. Statutory worker health and safety representatives and structures were not integrated into the complex change process developed by MOSH. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) and organized labour were ambivalent about direct involvement in MOSH and preferred regulatory measures to enforce the participation of mines. MOSH interventions were not targeted at mines with a poor health and safety record, and MOSH lacked a baseline from which to track impacts on sector-wide health and safety performance. The leading practices most widely adopted by mines were designed to improve, rather than fundamentally alter, existing practice. Although the depth of engagement with MOSH among stakeholders and on mine sites varied, mining companies, labour representatives, and the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) saw the programme as significant.IntroductionIn 2011, the Chamber of Mines commissioned the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the rollout of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH). CSMI, based in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, is an independent research centre conducting health and safety research relevant to all major stakeholders in the mining sector. The purpose of the evaluation was to identify the factors that enabled or hampered the adoption of new technologies or practices. The timing of the evaluation, two years before the deadline for the 2013 safety and health milestones, allowed time for adjustments to be made. This paper summarizes the results of the evaluation and includes further analysis and discussion of the nature of the programme and the conditions that act to advance it or it hold back."

The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr203. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 1.6 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, scope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider scopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

Slag-metal equilibrium experiments were conducted at 1500ºC and 1580ºC under 0.03 atm, 0.05atm and 0.83 atm CO partial pressures using silica and Cr-oxide crucibles. The complex slags belonged to SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO-FeOx-CrOxand the metal phase to the Cr-Fe-C-Si-(S)systems. The carbon saturation of the metal phase was avoided using oxide crucibles and thus the results are pertinent to ferrochromium refining slags and processes. From equilibrium data and thermodynamic calculations the CrO /(CrO+Cr2O3) ratio in the slag was determined as 0.75, 0.80and 0.86 under 0.83 atm and 0.05 atm of CO pressure at 1500ºC and 0.03 atm and CO pressure at1580ºC respectively. The results clearly demonstrated that a higher chromium content of the metal results in higher Cr in the slag, and chromium in slag decreases with increasing SiO2. The results were also sensitive to the crucibles used as these oxide crucibles saturated the slag either with respect to SiO2or Cr-oxides. It was also demonstrated that the relative amount of CrO in the slag was higher when SiO2crucibles were used in accord with thermodynamic calculations. Iso-concentration curves for carbon and chromium of the metal phase in equilibrium with the slag were drawn on pseudo ternary SiO2–(AI2O3+CaO+MgO)–(Cr2O3+Fe2O3) diagram. The activity coefficients and activities of carbon and chromium of the metal phase were also calculated from the experimental data and available thermodynamics information and were plotted as iso-activity curves in the same pseudo ternary diagram. High horizontal stress and its adverse effects on longwall gate entries have been witnessed in many US coal mines for the past years. It can cause cutter roofs and leads to roof falls either in the headgate or tailgate entries depending on the relative orientation of the panel to the maximum principal horizontal stress. Underground observations have shown that if the maximum principal horizontal stress is perpendicular to the panel entries, the roof is in the worst condition and if the maximum principal horizontal stress is parallel to the entries, the entry is in the best condition. However, little has been done about the high horizontal stress effects on panel entries subject to different orientations of high horizontal stress. In order to design a longwall panel and control the roof effectively, the redistribution and concentration of high horizontal stress field must be fully understood. Using 3-D finite element analysis, this paper presents the high horizontal stress redistribution and concentration for a retreat longwall face with different orientations of high horizontal stress. Based on the results, possible roof failures for different orientations of high horizontal stress are analyzed. A panel design criterion is recommended.

BECAUSE of its simplicity, the dip needle is widely used for locating magnetic rock formations in drift-covered areas. Although it responds only to strong magnetic disturbances, it has the advantage that surveys with it can be carried out rapidly, at relatively low cost, by untrained operators. More accurate surveys can be made with a much more sensitive instrument known as the magnetometer, but this must be operated by a specialist and the resulting survey costs are much higher. Mining men use the dip needle for the location of magnetic ores or mineral deposits associated with magnetic rocks. In certain districts, a survey with the dip needle may aid in solving geological structure. In the Little Long Lac and Crow River gold camps of Ontario, it has recently been used for these purposes. In interpreting the results of a dip needle survey, an understanding of the chief magnetic and mechanical factors determining the dip recorded by the needle is definitely necessary. For example, many observers locate a magnetic body by the highest dip values, apparently unaware that these frequently may not lie directly above the body. It should also be realized that a careful dip needle survey may yield information regarding the dip, breadth, and perhaps depth, of the magnetic body. Moreover, the observer should know when numerous closely-spaced dip readings are necessary, and when the dip may be measured at more widely separated intervals. The purpose of the following article is primarily to describe the factors affecting the registration of the dip needle, with a view to aiding investigators in a more accurate and complete interpretation of their results. To explain the cause of magnetic disturbances (anomalies) and the action of the dip needle, a knowledge of certain fundamental magnetic terms is necessary.
