"The El Abuelo Ca-Fe-magnetite skarn and related hydrothermal quartz veins are located at Cerro Pepita Hill, in southwestern Chubut province of southern Argentina, 1700 km southwest of Buenos Aires. These deposits are developed in a continental magmatic arc environment linked to the Andean orogeny. Iron skarn mineralization is mainly hosted by an Upper Jurassic to Early Cretaceous sedimentary sequence interbedded with Upper Jurassic basaltic andesite, and is spatially associated with Early Cretaceous calc-alkaline dikes. Ore grades vary between 40 and 63 wt.% Fe. In addition, anomalous metal contents (>10 000 ppm Cu and up to 81 g/t Ag) are present in the hydrothermal quartz veins.At least three paragenetic mineral assemblages have been identified in the El Abuelo exoskarn: (1) amphibole > epidote ± chlorite ± quartz, formed by isochemical contact metamorphism; (2) Fe-clinopyroxene ± Ca-garnet, formed during prograde metasomatic anhydrous exoskarn formation; and (3) actinolite ± epidote ± chlorite ± quartz ± magnetite > titanite, resulting from hydrous retrograde alteration of exoskarn. Endoskarn alteration involved an early Mg-Fe-clinopyroxene ± Fe-garnet assemblage followed by retrograde actinolite replacement of pyroxene. Lower temperature hydrothermal alteration related to quartz veins was superimposed on the skarn assemblages, showing an innermost sericite ± adularia ± pyrite ± chalcopyrite assemblage and an external propylitic halo.Some metallogenic characteristics of the mineralization and the geological setting resemble those in several iron oxide copper-gold deposits elsewhere in the world."

"Energy management is critical to aluminum processing given the high energy requirements of melting and processing aluminum. Energy costs have always been a high percentage of the total production costs within this industry. Energy management at many plants relied on better technology that many times required high capital. As carbon management has grown in importance and project payback becomes more critical, a larger view of a plant's process is required. This paper looks at the energy requirement due to current typical practices in overall product recovery, metal loss, utilization, and technology to understand potential methods of reducing overall energy within a plant and within the aluminum processing industry.IntroductionFor many companies that process aluminum, energy is a major portion of their costs that can surpass the cost oflabor. Aluminum processing can include secondary processing of scrap and prime aluminum into sows and/or molten aluminum or casting aluminum by various methods such as direct chill, continuous casting, low or high pressure casting, mold casting, and extrusions. In the case of this paper, we are considering only plants that include the melting process as a portion of their process. The process of melting aluminum takes energy. In most cases, the aluminum must then be heat treated one or more times. Post processing of the aluminum includes rolling mills used for making sheet, extrusion lines, and machining such as saw cuts, drilling, or surface finishes that all take additional energy.While these high energy costs directly affect the profits of the company, energy management within the metals industry is still not widespread. A co=on misconception is that the solution to high energy costs is high cost capital equipment. While state-of-the-art equipment can certainly improve energy efficiency, it is not the only solution. To obtain a truly energy efficient plant, several directions needs to be addressed through an energy management thought process with a wider scope. Impact on potential savings is possible through: product recovery, metal loss, utilization, and new technologies. An understanding of the potential costs and savings from these means is important. Several of these methods provide low cost approaches to saving energy.The background data used in this paper is not a random sample within aluminum processing but yearly averages from various plants in different aluminum processing industries. As is normal in this industry, the plants have been under different corporate management over the years with different strategies for energy management. This data is not meant to be accurate for the entire industry but to suggest areas for energy efficiency work."

Comparative data from ASTM method of test E-162 and large-scale trials in the Experimental Mine show that the flame-spread quality of brattice cloth and other ventilation control materials can effectively be evaluated by either method. Materials having a flame spread index of 25 or less, as determined by the simpler and more economical laboratory test ASTM E-162, do not present a serious fire hazard when used in coal mines.

Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority is currently undertaking the first Phase of Metro?s Extension to Northern Virginia. A wide range of tunnel options was considered for the Tysons Corner segment that involves about 20,000 feet of track and four stations. After consideration of many options that involved EPBM single track tunnels, NATM tunnels and large bore tunnel concepts for the entire Tysons alignment, the design now being progressed into construction involves two 520 meter (1,700 feet) long soft ground NATM tunnels with several hundred feet of cut-and-cover construction. The paper discusses the process that led to selection of the short NATM tunnels as the most feasible of the options considered for Tysons.

Nos últimos anos, um grande destaque na área dos biomateriais tem sido dado aos compósitos produzidos a partir de fosfatos de cálcio e biomateriais poliméricos, uma vez que podem ser empregados eficazmente em substituições do sistema ósseo e cartilaginoso. Este trabalho teve por objetivo desenvolver filmes poliméricos a partir de blendas entre dois polímeros biodegradáveis: o PLGA e o PHB, associadas ao BCP na forma de material particulado. Foram produzidas e caracterizadas duas formulações, 50/50 e 70/30 de PLGA e PHB, respectivamente. Em cada formulação dessas blendas foram introduzidas 10% e 25% de BCP, em relação à massa da matriz polimérica. Os compósitos foram processados pelo método Casting, sendo obtidos os compósitos pela evaporação do solvente utilizado - clorofórmio. É possível observar pela microscopia eletrônica (MEV) que as partículas de BCP formam uma fase dispersa em torno da matriz polimérica. A combinação destes materiais promoveu uma melhoria na performance mecânica dos compósitos. A conjugação de polímeros e biocerâmicas garantem elasticidade associada ao material polimérico, enquanto o BCP promove o aumento da rigidez e resistência à tração. Análises físico-químicas (DSC e DRX) demonstram a possibilidade de existir uma interface difusa entre os polímeros e a biocerâmica. Estes filmes parecem apresentar grande potencial para obtenção de biomateriais para substituições osteocondreais e/ou como membranas reabsorvíveis do periósteo.

As one of its projects for degasification of major panels of coal prior to mining within them, the Bureau of Mines conducted methane emission studies during development of a set of three headings 1,800 feet in a major coal panel (2,700 by 3,500 feet) which had been completely isolated by sets of main headings for 12 months in the Federal No. 2 mine (Pittsburgh coalbed) in northern West Virginia. Similar emission studies were conducted in the development of two sets of main headings in virgin coal areas nearby. Comparing the two sets of data indicated that the isolated coal panel had been degasified by approximately 70 percent.

"Helium has great value to the oil and as industry as a tracer gas, according to tests just completed in the Elk Hills Field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, Kearn County, California. When used as .a tracer gas, small percentages of helium are mixed with natural gas pumped into a reservoir for conservation, repressuring, or cycling purposes. Because minute quantities of helium added to natural gases can be detected by analytical methods and accurately determined, the variations of the helium content of gas withdrawn from various parts of a field when helium has been added to the injected gas give interesting and long-sought data on the movement of injected gas through reservoirs.The Bureau of Mines engineers began their studies of the use of helium as a tracer material in gas-injection operations in the Elk Hills, California, oil field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, in response to a request by the Navy Department for assistance in connection with an expanded oil-production program instituted in that field. This report discusses the Bureau's work on the problem of determining the direction and extent of migration of injected gas in the Elk Hills reservoir by the use of helium as a tracer gas,The Bureau appreciates the cooperation and assistance of Commodore W. G. Greenman, U.S.N., director, and Commander R. Walling, U.S.N.R., Assistant director, Naval Petroleum .and Oil Shale Reserves, Washington, D. C., Captain H. P. Operations of the new copper smelter at Mount Isa commenced on the 6th February, 1953. Prior to this date a paper by R. V. Anderson (1953) outlined the smelter layout, proposed operation and expected performance.Nominally a 50-ton per day plant, output is currently at the rate of 85 long tons per day. In the first 3t years, of operation to 30th June, 1956, '71,339 tons of blister copper were produced. Operation has been stabilized' and a number of modifications to plant and operation have been made. This paper reviews the progress made to date.GENERAL LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENTThe general layout and equipment follows well-established practice as study of Figs. 1 to 4, and Appendix II will show. This diagrammatic representation of layout (Fig. 1) and flow sheet (Fig. 2) is intended for the purpose of brevity to take the place of a detailed plant description.Choice of site for the smelter was limited by the necessity for close proximity of the waste heat boilers to the powerhouse.Much excavation was necessary before foundation work commenced, but the plant is compact and further expansion is possible.CHARGE MAKE-UPRoaster charge initially comprised concentrates, purchased ores, revert materials, mine sulphide ore and barren sand. As purchased ore receipts increased and as domestic black rock oxidized ore became available, the latter two fluxes were eliminated from the charge. Fluxes at minus i-in. sizing are trucked from crushing plant or stockpile by motor lorries. Filtered mill concentrates are dropped from an overhead conveyor on to the storage patio floor adj acent to the two concentrate bins.

Mining of As-bearing minerals had resulted in the release of arsenic species predominantly As(III), which is known to be more toxic, and undue exposure to it is detrimental to human organ systems. Many materials have been examined for As(III) removal, but it is still challenging to advance sustainable materials for effective removal of As(III). In this paper, a more eco-friendly and superparamagnetic Fe0-Fe3O4 composite was synthesised and evaluated for heterogeneous catalytic oxidation and removal of As(III) with peroxymonosulfate (PMS, KHSO5). The kinetic removal studies showed that removal of As(III) was probably through a chemical process and the Elovich model best represented the experimental data. The removal capacity for As(III) on Fe0-Fe3O4 with PMS (1.76 mmol/g) is superior to that without PMS (0.83 mmol/g). Combined results from XPS and ESR showed that As(III) was fully transformed to As(V) through catalytic oxidation by Fe0-Fe3O4/PMS and afterwards enhanced its removal. The removal mechanism of arsenic was ascribed to the formation of outer-sphere (electrostatic attraction) and inner-sphere complexes. The adsorbent can be separated easily from water due to its excellent magnetisation (64.5 emu/g) and also has good reusability potential as more than 85% of the initial concentration of As(III) was immobilised after five consecutive cycles. "High material prices and price uncertainty can be harmful to manufacturing firms. Increased use of recycled materials, industry-wide, can lower both material prices and price variability; moreover, increased recycling decreases the use of primary material, which mitigates price increases due to scarcity effects. These stabilizing and price lowering effects are explored using an Aluminum industry model. We show that (a) increased recycling leads to smaller price fluctuations in the presence of a primary metal supply perturbation, and (b) that the more substitutable the secondary metal is for the primary metal, the lower the overall material price is.IntroductionThe price of an industrial metal is expected to be a function of both the marginal cost of extraction and its scarcity[l-2]: where scarcity can be defined as the degree to which anticipated demand exceeds the known supply. Recycling end-of-life metal increases the apparent supply of the metal, or-in a functionally equivalent, but alternative conception-lowers the demand for primary metal; this lowers primary metal scarcity and should, theoretically, reduce its price. To the extent that this theoretical prediction holds true, recycling can provide benefits to consumers of industrial metals in the form of lower prices.Using a platinum industry model, prior work by Alonso[3] has shown that increased industrywide recycling can reduce metal price volatility because the secondary metal production (a) offsets virgin metal depletion, and (b) responds to supply-demand balance fluctuations more rapidly than the primary market. However, Platinum is not a typical industrial metal in the sense that secondary metal is perfectly substitutable for primary metal: Both primary and secondary platinum metal are functionally equivalent and have a common price. Other metals, such as secondary aluminum which is used as an example case in this study, contain varying degrees of other elements that were either intentionally added, or were inadvertently mixed in with the metal during the scrap recovery process. Consequently, different grades of scrap exist that have different profiles of elements in their composition. Depending on their particular profile of elements, more or less of a given grade can be used as a mass fraction of the final alloy-the secondary metal is not perfectly substitutable for the primary metal. For the purposes of this paper, the aluminum mass fraction of the final alloy that can be made up of secondary aluminum is termed the secondary substitutability of that grade in that alloy."

Para a manutenção dessas certificações é necessário que exista uma gestão sobre a aplicabilidade dessas normas e uma exigência legal é a qualificação dos seus fornecedores críticos para o Meio Ambiente e para Qualidade. O objetivo deste trabalho consiste em apresentar o modelo de monitoramento destes fornecedores nos quesitos performance de Entrega, performance de Qualidade e arquivamento das documentações legais. A Diretoria de Suprimentos atua de forma corporativa em 12 sites, e semestralmente gera relatórios para realizar este monitoramento e essa documentação gerada era arquivada em diversas pastas (em papel) em um único site, o que dificultava a consulta de funcionários que estivessem em outro site nos momentos de auditoria. 0 novo modelo contempla a ferramenta utilizando o próprio ERP, SAP/R3 que possibilita a consulta da documentação necessária, do fomecedor que desejar, de qualquer site, a qualquer momento. Essa ferramenta tem como objetivo agilizar a chegada de informação para quem precisar, em tempo real.

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993 (original title: Knowledge-based condition monitoring of cone crushers). A large proportion of the electricity used by the quarrying industry is consumed in the comminution and sizing process. In most cases aggregate processing plants operate with minimum control features resulting in limited operational efficiency. Improved control is required to increase operational efficiency with concomitant savings associated with reduction in re-circulating load and improved resource utilisation. Development work has suggested that a combination of adaptive control and process condition monitoring could improve control of comminution plants. Many commercial process control and condition monitoring systems are available, but none were deemed suitable due to the domain specific characteristics of the application. An assessment of the particular characteristics of cone crushing concluded that the application was best suited to the use of small domain specific process control combined with bespoke condition monitoring. The processing power of the control system for the project is a function not of the academic requirement, but rather the economic and practical constraints imposed by the application. As a result of the constraints a high-end PC system has been designed in preference to a workstation. Within the research project work packages are sub-divided into novel wear sensor development, knowledge based control/condition monitoring and the investigation and mathematical modelling of the wear mechanisms inherent in cone crushing. Numerous strategies were considered to implement the control system outlined. The system currently under development is a modular design which utilises intelligent novel sensors to provide a variety of data inputs

Soon New York City will have a new train station. A tunnel project is under construction to extend Line 7 to a new station that is located near the Jacob K. Javits Con-vention Center. This is also part of the Hudson Yards redevelopment project that is intended to aid redevelop-ment of the west side of Midtown Manhattan around the Long Island Railroad?s Caemmerer Railyard. The station, or ?cavern? as it?s called by those excavating it, will be the portal for that growth. In the city, public transportation means high-rise residential proper-ties will have better access to the business district, and those outside the area will have greater access to event facilities ? two factors that are critical for development investment.

"There has been considerable output over the last three decades from the social sciences concerning man and his working environment. In the mining industry at large, however, authoritarian, hierarchical control systems remain the norm, and it can be argued that something less than optimum effectiveness in terms of both productivity and worker satisfaction has resulted.Recently (/975), Campbell Chibougamau Mines Ltd. devised a most interesting organization and incentive system that links the underground production of a standard ton of mined output at controlled grade to an incentive payment scheme. A parallel scheme in the mill complex is based on maximizing recovery of copper and gold from available feed. A key part of both minsystems is the formation of groups who have considerable autonomy, particularly when compared to the still prevalent traditional mining industry relationships between the worker and supervisory levels.This paper traces the development of Campbell Chibougamau's system . Attention is drawn to qualitative and quantitative measures of the success of the method through the commentary of those miners involved in the scheme, and by reference to the favourable records on productivity, absenteeism, safety, turnover and grievance activity.IntroductionPyramidal or hierarchical management control systems, coupled to piece-work incentive schemes, predominate throughout Canada's underground mining industry. Although specific details of such systems vary from site to site, they , are generally understood and accepted as fact by the majority of the work force.Normally, a front-line supervisor (shift boss) directs a number of workmen and assigns them to tasks and working locations commensurate with their abilities, knowledge, training and skills. This front -line supervisor may direct or supervise from as few as 12 to as many as 75 or more workmen. He issues orders according to his assigned production objectives and ensures that these directions are fulfilled in accordance with standard mine practice . Several shift bosses are usually directed by a mine foreman or mine captain. The mine captains report to a general foreman or directly to the mine superintendent or his assistant, depending on the size and scope of the operation."

"The NewCrest Cadia operation boasts the largest SAG mill commissioned last June 1998. A request was made to shed some more light on possible SAG mill charge behaviour. Three different software were used to simulate SAG mill charge behaviour:Mishra/Rajamanis MillSoft DEM charge motion program, Radziszewskis agglomerated DEM charge motion program and Powell/Nuricks MillTraj outer trajectories program. The contexts simulated are: 20/30 % charge volume, 65/75/85 % critical speed using the Hi-Lo lifter configuration specified for the mill as well as a Hi-Lo 60 degre lifter face configuration. Further, lifter interval was also studied to determine the effect on power draft. Power predictions are compared with those obtained during the commissioning period.INTRODUCTIONThe NewCrest Cadia operation is located outside of Orange, New South Wales, Australia. With proven reserves of 190 million tonnes at a grade of 0.75 g/t Au, the mill was designed to process 17 Mtpa (2065 tph) of ore with an 86% copper and 73% gold recovery. The grinding circuit (Fig. 1, Table I) boasts the largest SAG mill (Fig. 2) and was commissioned last June 1998."

In recent years, coal beneficiation has gotten considerable attention. Selective oil agglomeration has been accepted as the best method to produce clean coal with a high removal of pyrite sulphur. In this study, spherical oil agglomeration of Datong coal fines was carried out using diesel oil as a bridging liquid. The oil agglomeration has a surface properties based on coal cleaning technique. The effects of fundamental parameters have been investigated including the concentration of bridging liquid, the size of coal particle, the solid content of slurry, the agitation time and rate, pH, surfactants on the agglomeration performance and various salts on the ash rejection and removal of pyrite of the agglomerated products. The optimum conditions of particle size, diesel concentration, solid content, agitation speed and time, pH and the dosage of active agent have been determined as less than 8µm, 20wt%, 1200r/min and 10 minutes, 7.5g/t and 100g/t, respectively. Under these conditions the ash content in the products can be achieved 1.5% below, the ash rejection was up to 92%. It has been observed that ionic strength of the aqueous medium affects the agglomeration performance. The precombustion coal cleaning process based on improved selective agglomeration results in high ash and pyrite sulphur removals. Over 80% removal of pyrite sulphur can be achieved from run-of-mine coals by offering a more cost-effective sulphur reduction solution rather than any other SO2 removal technology. In addition, the removal of pyrite sulphur is very necessary for not only the prevention of environmental pollution but also economical reasons.

Mechanization and automation of logistic equipment has become one of the main key factors in raising productivity and competitiveness especially for complex and larger mining or tunneling projects. The Lake Mead Intake Tunnel #3 shaft mucking installation is a good example to demonstrate the potential that is found in an overall optimized logistic. It starts with the planning and results in using customized installations which fulfill the specifically defined requirements for the project. Rowa developed a solution and supplied a shaft mucking system using a discontinuous double drum hoisting concept with shaft buckets, loading, and unloading devices. With this fully automated system a continuous muck flow of 437t/h can be achieved.

INJURY and employment figures for nonmetal mines and mills in 1959 are presented in this publication. Data for nonmetal mines are presented separately from those for nonmetal mills. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to send questionnaires to the nonmetal mining industry each year requesting their voluntary submission of injury experience and employment data. The voluntary response to these requests has contributed greatly toward the promotion of safety in the industry, and every effort has been made to make the information as complete as possible.
