To achieve an efficient separation in the flotation process, valuable particles need to be selectively segregated from the gangue while utilising a minimum number of flotation stages. TodayÆs existing flotation technologies are effective for fine particle size classes; however, limitations due to particle buoyancy and bubble-particle detachment restrict the effectiveness of traditional flotation approaches on coarser particles. As a result, flotation circuits are generally configured to process only fine particle size classes in order to maximise recovery in the primary stages. Eriez has invented a novel flotation technology, the HydroFloat, which overcomes these limitations by carrying-out flotation in a dense, fluidised-bed medium allowing for the recovery of coarse particles (>0.250 mm). Over the last 15 years, this technology has been successfully applied to industrial minerals with several full-scale units installed to recover particles up to and exceeding 3 mm diameter in primary flotation circuits. This paper includes discussions on the history of this technology, process theory, existing applications, and a review of recent sulphide-based laboratory test work conducted for Newcrest mining and others. Benefits of this approach, such as improved recovery, low energy consumption and reduced reagent addition will also be reviewed.CITATION:Kohmuench, J, Thanasekaran, H and Seaman, B, 2013. "Each January, tunneling and underground professionals gather in New York City for the George A. Fox Conference. The one-day event offers attendees the opportunity to listen to their peers outline what’s new in the underground construction industry, get updates on major projects in North America and have a chance to catch up of old friends.The conference is put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME. This latest conference attracted about 370 specialists in the industry. The theme for this year’s event was “Water Tunnels, Past, Present and Future.”The technical session included talks focused on major tunneling projects, including the massive California Water Fix program and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) Metropolitan tunnel redundance program in Boston. The conference also included an update on the Gateway Project from Phil Rice from WSP and Mahammed Nasim of Amtrak as well as a Tunnel Industry update.The following is a sample of a few of the presentations. Technical presentationsDEP’s Tunneling Program Evolution. James Mueller is the agency chief engineer of New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Its mission is to plan sustainable infrastructure investments for the future of clean water and the environment in the city and its watersheds, he said. The agency’s goals are to synthesize information across bureaus within DEP to allow data-driven decision-making. It is also to optimize internal agency processes and systems related to the implmenation of engineering programs within a structured assessment process. The agency also prioritizes projects and funding within a structured integrated planning process. And it standardizes project performance and delivery to meet the needs of the agency in alignment with industry standards and market capabilities."

PREVIOUS investigations on the effect of neutron irradiation on the superconducting properties of bulk transition metals indicated that little or no change occurred in poly crystalline disordered materials, particularly if cold-worked prior to irradiation. Only the superconducting properties of ordered intermetal-lic A15 compounds were found to be sensitive to irradiation, and the observed reduction in Tc and increased magnetic hysteresis or critical current densities were attributed to the introduction of flux pinning vacancy clusters and disorder in the lattice. Since the former would also be expected to be present after irradiation in disordered alloys, the general conclusion was that the disordering effect of the irradiation was the primary reason for the changes observed. The present note reports some unusual effects of neutron irradiation on cold worked Nb(Cb)-Ti-V alloys. Specimens with nominal composition as given in Table I were prepared by repeated arc melting, taking the usual precautions, and homogenized at 1000°C for 24 hr prior to a reduction of 15:l by cold rolling. Samples of size 1 by 1 by 25 mm were sliced from the rolled strips. The sarmples chosen for irradiating were sealed in a cadmium tube (wall thickness 1 mm) prior to exposure in a fast neutron flux of 3.7 x 1019 neutrons per sq cm in the swimming pool reactor of Union Carbide Corporation&apos;s Sterling Forest Reactor. During irradiation the temperature of the samples was maintained below 70°C. The irradiated samples were stored at room temperature for approximately 1 year allowing the radiation levels to reach a safe handling value. Tc measurements were made employing a self-inductance coil technique. Jc data at 4.2"Kwere obtained using a four lead resistivity method. The latter measurements were made at the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory by setting the perpendicularly applied field and increasing the direct current through the sample until a potential of about 10-6 v was detected. Tc values for the nonirradiated samples are listed in Table I together with the change in Tc after irradiation. A decrease in Tc of 0.25 or 0.3"K was measured for three of the four samples, the exception being the Nb-30 at. pct V-20 at. pct Ti alloy which showed a decrease of 0.5K. Jc vs applied field data are plotted in Fig. 1 for the Nb-20 at. pct V-30 at. pct Ti alloy. These curves are typical of the four alloys and surprisingly indicate that a degradation occurred in all the samples after irradiation. Hc2 values, obtained by extrapolation to zero current, are 8 to 15 pct lower than those measured for the nonirradiated specimens. The reasons for the degradation of Tc and jc ob-served in the alloys on exposure to neutron irradiation are not immediately apparent. The temperature at which the samples were maintained during bombardment (<70°C) and stored (20°C) make it highly unlikely that any significant change in the dislocation density of the materials through thermally activated migration and annihilation would occur. The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine the embedded hydrogen chloride (HCI) and smoke particle characteristics during combustion of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and chlorinated mine materials for development of a test parameter. The experiments were conducted in an approximately 20-L furnace at set furnace temperatures of 250° and 1,000° C, for a 14-min duration, with an airflow through the furnace of 10 L/min. The variables studied, as a function of time, were hydrogen chloride embedded on smoke particles, hydrogen chloride concentrations in the gas phase, smoke particle average diameter (dg) and particle concentration (no), and product of smoke particle diameter and concentration (dgno). Other variables included carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxygen (O2) concentrations; sample mass weight loss; and furnace temperatures. Results show that there is a correlation between embedded hydrogen chloride, hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, and inverse of the smoke particle diameter-concentration product (1/dgno); the higher the hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, the higher the embedded hydrogen chloride, the higher the 1/(dgno) values. These correlations will enable development of a simple test parameter to assess the toxic hazard that these materials pose during fire.

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines dealt with the toxicity of dichlorodifluoromethane5, a new refrigerant that has a remarkably low toxicity. Continued research by the Prigidaire Corporation6 and toxicological experiments performed in the Laboratory of Applied Physiology of the University of Cincinnati7 revealed another organic fluoride, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, whose toxicity also appeared to be of a very low order and whose physical-and chemical properties make it suitable for refrigeration purposes. In addition to low toxicity, safety in its use is further enhanced by its physical properties, which permit the design of equipment that operates at comparatively low pressures and hence mitigates the dangers and problems of leakage. The investigation described in this report was performed by the Bureau of Mines at the request and with the cooperation of the Frigidaire Corporation.

Investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of methods of upgrading tar obtained by low-temperature carbonization of lignite showed that ß,ß?-oxydipropionitrile, ß,ß?-iminodipropionitrile, and ß,ß&apos;-thiodipropionitrile were effective solvents for extracting aromatics (aromatic hydrocarbons plus polar compounds) from coal-tar neutral distillate fractions. Batch extraction showed that these solvents extracted approximately the same percentage of aromatics from various neutral oil fractions boiling between approximately 170° and 350° C. In continuous countercurrent extractions using oxydipropionitrile and iminodipropionitrile, approximately 30 to 35 vol.-pct, and 65 to 70 vol.-pct, of the aromatics in 170° to 350° C. neutral distillate oil were extracted at room temperature when solvent-to-oil ratios were 2:1 and 12:1, respectively. As the concentration of aromatics in the neutral distillate oil fraction decreased, the capacities and, to some extent, the selectivities of these solvents for the remaining aromatics decreased. Aromatics were isolated from the extracts and the solvents recovered by washing the extract fractions with a low-boiling paraffinic hydrocarbon such as heptane, using hydrocarbon-to-extract ratios of at least 2:1. The heptane wash removed most of the aromatics but only part of the polar compounds (compounds containing oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen) from the extracts. The recovered oxydipropionitrile and iminodipropionitrile, containing polar compounds, were effective in extracting aromatics from neutral distillate oils. The contaminated solvents showed essentially the same capacities and selectivities as the pure solvents.

The Montana Department of Transportation recently awarded a contract to construct a replacement bridge across the Clark Fork River in Heron, MT. Both abutments and both intermediate bridge bents were to be founded on 6-ft and 8-ft diameter, permanently cased drilled shafts with rock sockets, respectively. Two drilled shafts per substructure location were designed for a total of eight drilled shafts. The original design included 6-ft diameter drilled shafts at the abutments but the Contractor elected to submit a Value Engineering proposal that increased them to 8-ft diameter. On the basis of the subsurface exploration program, extremely challenging subsurface conditions were known to exist, including the potential presence of large boulders within the predominantly sand and gravel soil matrix. The successful bidder elected to use an oscillator to install the permanent casing to the top of bedrock, while simultaneously removing the spoils from inside the casing with a clam-grab. On seven of the eight shafts, this approach worked well. Unfortunately, on one of the shafts, the casing met refusal on one or more boulders encountered in the predominantly sand and gravel soil overburden. Following several attempts, and despite several variations of approaches, it was determined that the casing could not be advanced beyond the obstruction without unacceptable risks to the pile-supported temporary work trestle (i.e., loss of soil and reduction in pile capacity for the foundations supporting the work trestle). To mitigate the problematic drilled shaft, a unique solution was designed and successfully constructed. The solution involved the construction of seven 16-in diameter micropiles constructed within the confines of the obstructed casing. The micropiles were drilled to bedrock through the sand, gravel, and boulders and include rock sockets to satisfy axial design requirements. The micropile casing thickness, grade and grout strength were designed to provide adequate flexural strength as well as to satisfy other design requirements. Upon completion of the micropile installation, the upper portion of the drilled shaft above the boulders and within the permanent casing was constructed as usual. This paper discusses the difficult subsurface conditions at the site, the drilled shaft construction difficulties, and the design and construction of the micropile solution.

The August 2007 Crandall Canyon mine disaster raised national awareness of mining-induced seismicity (MIS) in Utah as well as general interest in how seismic monitoring might improve mine safety in the region. Unlike the situation in most other mining areas in the U.S., local seismographs in Utah?s Wasatch Plateau (WP) and Book Cliffs (BC) coal fields are an integral part of a modern real-time earthquake information system developed by the University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) as part of an Advanced National Seismic System. The UUSS earthquake catalog contains a continuous record of MIS at all active mine sites in the WP-BC region since 1978 (more than 18,000 seismic events = M 4.2). We describe characteristics of MIS and current seismic monitoring capabilities in the WP-BC region. We then demonstrate, using MIS from an example Utah coal mine, the ability to refine event locations with estimated absolute errors of ~200 m or less using a combination of (1) a double-difference relocation methodology and (2) ground truth information provided by mine operators. This approach enables sufficient spatial resolution to correlate MIS with mining activities, providing a useful tool to help improve mine safety.

The ballability of hematite ore with addition of a certain amount of pulverized anthracite and the induration features of anthracite–containing hematite pellets were studied. The results indicate that adding a certain proportion of anthracite can improve the quality of green pellets as well as the roasting performance of roasted pellets. The suitable mass dosage of anthracite is 1.0%–1.5%. Under the conditions of roasting temperature 1280 oC–1350 oC and roasting time 15 min–20 min, the compressive strength of roasted pellets is found to be more than 2500 N/P. Compared with hematite pellets in the absence of anthracite, the proper induration temperature is diminished by 20 oC, whereas optimal induration temperature range expands by 50 oC, and induration time is shortened by 5 min–10 min. Adding anthracite is an effective measure to improve the pelletization of hematite.

The block cave mining method utilized by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) generates fines and allows the inflow of water. Both constituents have contributed to unfavorable characteristics: an increase in ore material plasticity and fluidity. Unfavorable material needs to be monitored and managed as it passes from intermediate ore stockpiles through feeders and then to milling operations. We describe an implementation of several Video Data Analytics (VDA) algorithms on smart cameras to quantify the potential fluidity and plasticity by measuring the apparent velocity and agglomeration of material flowing through ore feeders. This approach to VDA on smart cameras is a cost effective, self-contained, solution to identify these unfavorable characteristics. The solution allows the operators to manage the related operational risks, maintain safe production and govern feeder rates when material is unfavorable, which is expected as PTFI proceeds deeper into the underground orebody

This paper gives a brief overview of impacts of coal blending on coal-fired power plants performance and discuses the preliminary results of an on-going study aimed at evaluating the effect of coal properties on the effectiveness, compatibility and thermal reactivity of coal blends. Plant survey studies reported no significant impacts on an existing plant designed for a high rank coal when switched to a blend of low- and high- rank coal. However, slight modification of some aspects (handling, fuel storage/stockpile, transportation, preparation, and general housekeeping) of plant design and operation may be necessary. The preliminary results of an on-going study at the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory shows that more compatible and better blends could be made from coals where ranks are closer than from those where ranks are far apart.

"Slope stability analysis is performed most commonly using limit equilibrium calculations or numerical models assuming a two-dimensional slice through an infinitely long slope surface. In areas such as open pit mining, where most slope surfaces are not planar, the importance of curvature becomes important due to the economic gains associated with creating a steeper slope. With advances in computing capabilities within the last decade, three-dimensional slope analysis can be performed within reasonable time frames. Some work has been done on the potential importance of curvature on slope stability, mainly assuming homogenous materials with a circular shear-failure mechanism. However, many open pit mines are excavated in jointed rock mass where a completely different set of failure mechanisms can be seen. Depending on the geometry and radius of the pit, the curved geometry may influence the factor of safety and failure behaviour compared to a two-dimensional slice.A series of numerical analyses were performed to investigate the effect of curvature on jointed rock slope stability compared to an equivalent two-dimensional slope analysis. By using discrete element method models, the influence of joint planes and interaction between distinct blocks can be seen. With a three-dimensional model, the effect of curvature can be combined with multiple joint sets at any orientation, which cannot be seen in a single slice. Numerous three-dimensional models are created, along with an equivalent unit-thick slice. The effect of curvature on a variety of different types of failure mechanisms is observed, and graphical relationships are created to quantify the difference between the three-dimensional factor of safety and the two-dimensional factor of safety based on the degree of curvature."

A polyester-type resin and deformed-steel reinforcing bars (rebars) were used in to strengthen and to stabilize bolted, fractured wall rock along pas 1:&apos;y. in a western gold mine. Reinforcing bars were placed in boreholes drilled into fractured rock and then were surrounded by resin pumped under pressure into the holes and intersecting fractures until the wall rock was thoroughly impregnated. Pumping and injection equipment and infusion procedures are described. Visual examinations for movement in bonded and adjacent unbonded rock were made for 3 years. Fractured walls containing resin-rebar installations were strengthened. The results suggest that resin-rebar support can be used advantageously and economically in repairing fractured or broken rock when compared with rock bolting or timbering.

The paper describes some problems encountered with the foundation of a deep drainage caisson constructed on the Nile Bank in Cairo. The use of suction dredging while sinking the caisson led to a piping failure of the sandy soil in the base which was loosened during the process of pumping. A study was carried out to investigate the problem and a procedure was adopted to retain the stability of the caisson.

Low-temperature carbonization product yields for 129 coals representative of 12 Utah coalfields were estimated, using regression equations developed from heating value and proximate and ultimate analysis data. It was shown that yields of char, tar plus light oil, water of decomposition, and gas, as well as the gas volume and the heating value of the gas, could be predicted with reasonable accuracy. Published and experimental results from eight Utah coals carbonized at selected temperatures in the 4500 to 1,000° C range were used to determine the effect of temperature on product yields. Carbonization temperature, heating value) oxygen, and volatile matter of coal appear to be the principal variables influencing carbonization product yields. Data presented show that the heating value and the residual volatile matter in low-temperature char may be predicted using relationships developed from proximate analysis data for 220 coals.

In the earliest days of mining coal the obvious method was by bord and pillar working. Longwall in Britain developed from this as an expedient to overcome bottlenecks arising from ? 1) increasing depth of seams causing roof control difficulties; and 2) ventilation problems. This system became almost universal particularly in the thicker seams, where faces of up to one mile in length were not uncommon. Coal getting in these faces was usually by pick and shovel, filled into small waggons of up to 15 cwts capacity. These waggons ran on rails laid alongside the coal face and were often taken away from the face to the main haulage roads by horses. The roof was supported by rigid props and the wastes were normally controlled by strip packing. This system of mining was very flexible and worked well down to sections of about 3&apos;6"

Two integral components of the 30 CFR 48 training requirements mandated for new miners, newly employed experienced miners, and the annual refresher training of all miners are hazard recognition and prevention of accidents. In these categories, instruction shall include the recognition and avoidance of hazards present in the mine, and a review of accidents and their causes. Unlike instruction preparation for fact-based material, program development for hazard recognition places a particular challenge before safety-training specialists because they are often limited in their ability to adequately gauge the trainees&apos; levels awareness prior to training. Further, they must also assure that the training is relevant, and it is presented in a thought-provoking manner. Computer-based instruction is particularly well suited for assisting trainers in developing hazard- recognition topics because it can be used in pre-training and post-training modes for assessment of training effectiveness, in addition to use as a presentation tool. Therefore, this paper will present a recent approach developed at Penn State to apply this technology for assessment and instruction of accident prevention through hazard recognition, with an application prepared for surface coal mines.

The processing of scrap and scrap cars starts with size reduction by a hammermill, or shredder. After the liberation the magnetic fraction is removed. The remaining non¬magnetic fraction mixed with other materials is screened and each fraction is processed separately. The increased use of plastic has a negative effect on the recovery of metals and waste production. At Huron Valley, Belleville Michigen, USA, the non-ferrous fraction from 5 million obsolete cars per year, containing 200,000 tons of non-ferrous metal, is processed. Aluminium Is recovered with a heavy medium separation process and concentrated with eddy current separators. The remaining heavy non-ferrous fraction is concentrated by a new combination of eddy current separation and image processing. After this separation process the zinc fraction is melted and refined and the copper, brass, stainless steel and other high-quality concentrates are sold to the secondary industries. The recycling of car scrap has become an important source of metals and materials for the secondary. materials processing industry.
