The chromite deposits along the Stillwater complex in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties, Mont., have at various times been studied and reported on by the Federal Geological Survey, the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, other Government agencies, and private interests, Several of the deposits were explored to a mall extent by the owners during the World War of 1914-17, but no production resulted. The importance of these deposits and the urgent necessity of developing large domestic sources of chromite were realized shortly before the beginning of the recent World War. These deposits were therefore investigated and developed by Government agencies and., as a result, now afford the largest known reserves of chromium in the United States. In 1939, under the authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey made preliminary investigations of these deposits. As a result, the Bureau of Mines conducted an extensive program of trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling. This work was begun in August 1939 and continued to April 1943. The Bureau of Mines also performed numerous metallurgical tests on the beneficiation of the chromite ores and concentrates and for the production of chromium metal there from. Research continues as a means toward utilizing these ores.

Fires in metal mines have resulted in some of the worst disasters in American mining history insofar as loss of life is concerned. One fire caused the death of 163 miners and individual less spectacular fires have cost the lives of scores of workers. Metal mines are often very deep, and the men working on numerous levels far removed from direct communication with the surface. In many instances they cannot be warned quickly of an emergency or a mine fire by telephone or other usual method of communication, or by messenger, flashing lights, gongs, sirens, or whistles. Telephones are not paricularly effective as a means of warning unless placed at all strategic points and with attendants always on duty; though telephones well placed have a definite value in any well-pla.mied emergency procedure in mines of all kinds. Messengers are slow and men working in remote parts of a mine would not receive a warning quickly enough. Most metal mines are not electrically lighted, except at or adjacent to shaft stations and in principal haulageways, and this limits the effectiveness of flashing lights. Electric gongs and sirens or whistles have been tried as warning signals, but the sound is quickly deadened and does not travel upward into the stopes, especially those of an extensive volume. Shutting off the compressed air is by no means satisfactory as a warning, as not infrequently it is stopped accidently, so that it loses its value as an alarm. The introduction of water into compressed air lines is undesirable as a fire warning and necessitates considerable care, especially in deep mines; pressure-reducing valves must be provided to reduce pressure that otherwise would break connections or split the pipe. A quick, effective method of warning miners underground of the existence of an emergency requiring them to leave the mine immediately, such as a fire on the surface or underground, is provided by the introduction of stenches in the compressed-air lines. "This paper discusses the formulation of a linear program with the objective of maximizing the cash flow of the long-term plan of an underground operation. A mine is split into eleven independent ore zones, each characterized by its reserves, required development, and mining method. Based on practical considerations, maximum rates are set for each zone’s development and production capacity. For the total mine plan, a minimum daily production rate is set along with a minimum feed grade to the mill. A maximum daily development capacity is set based on the equipment and labour available. Proven and probable ore is mined preferentially over possible ore in the early years of the plan. Also, the fixed cost of operating the mine is taken into consideration whenever mining activities take place.Once the linear program is solved, it can be critically reviewed, and unrealistic results can be identified. Some resource allocations constraints can then be changed in certain sectors, and new results can be analyzed. “Whatif” scenarios can also be examined, such as determining the impact of hiring a contractor to develop a given sector, or dropping an ore zone completely from the plan."

Broken Hill metallurgists have been responsible for some of the most important developments in mineral processing technology. These occurred mainly in two periods, 1902 - 15 and 1955 - 70. Mineral flotation was developed as an industrial process during the first period and this happened in two stages, the recovery of zinc minerals from the tailings dump accumulated during the gravity concentration of the oxidised ores and the selective recovery of galena and marmatite during flotation of the primary ores. During the second period fast accurate analytical procedures were developed to provide rapid assessment of process performance, and new means of controlling the process were devised which improved throughputs, grades and recoveries. These technological successes were due to the skills of the metallurgists and the commitment of the companies. They brought large financial returns. They were achieved under difficult circumstance. There are important lessons to be learnt from these successes.

"The future of the uranium industry in Canada during the next twenty years will be very dependent on political and social issues on a world scale. Technology, as such, will tend to be of lesser importance. Nonetheless, some technical changes can be anticipated.This paper deals with milling of uranium ore, leaving further processing and nuclear power production to specialists in these fields. An attempt has been made to look at uranium production technology in Canada in relation to that in other countries, and to draw interference regarding future changes that seem probable in the Canadian context. In particular, recent advances in mill equipment are considered.The chemistry of uranium and its relatively low concentration in most ores has been responsible for a completely hydrometallurgical approach to mill processing, and this should continue. In spite of little commercial success to date, pre-concentration of lower grade ores will be researched further in order that these ores can compete with higher grade deposits in Canada.The discovery of the relatively high-grade ores of the Athabasksa region will undoubtedly influence choice of mill processes and equipment. The potential effect on innovations is discussed"

"Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation in the future. The importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing.This paper outlines the introduction of automated mining systems in large conventional mines as well as their growing role in block cave mines currently operating or being developed. The paper will then focus on a case study of how the communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation system within the overall mine operation.Mining operations already embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote and automated mining, but also provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments and requirements. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.The paper will explore how certain mining operations are addressing this by adopting a long-term strategy for automation deployment, which includes laying the necessary foundation architecture to meet their current requirements, while supporting their future visions for the fully automated mine.CITATION:Paine, R and Kent, D, 2014. A research effort was conducted to present or develop methodology for evaluating candidate potting materials intended for use in explosion-proof enclosures. The primary purpose was to develop acceptance guidelines based on arc decomposition products. Acceptance criteria can be based on: ? Inherent thermo-chemophysical, mechanical and electrical properties; ? Arc decomposition products: ? Nature of volatile products produced, e.g., flammability, explosivity, synergistic effects on existing environment in the enclosure, toxicity; ? Quantity produced as a function of arc power and duration; ? Acceleration aging tests to evaluate breakdown under electrical stress.

In this paper a project to develop a joint optimisation/simulation model for production planning in a mine-mill complex is presented. The system involves a mill receiving ore from a number of different locations, each with a unique mineral composition. The mill consists of several crushing and grinding circuits that function in series and parallel. Scheduling the flow of materials through the mill is complex due to constraints on throughput imposed by the millÆs design, the length of time material can be stockpiled on the surface, varying input mineral composition, and throughput targets for a range of output products.An optimisation model is used to create a set of campaigns (ore feed rates) over a given planning horizon under the assumption of deterministic mill throughput. A simulation model is used to evaluate the production plan under assumptions of stochastic machine failure and operational losses created by the need to cycle between input feeds. Campaign scheduling has two important implications for the simulation. First, during any campaign, multiple ore types may need to flow through the mill. However, the mill must be controlled to ensure that only one type of ore can be in a crusher, a grinder or a storage bin at any point in time. Second, as the mill switches from one campaign to another, the set of ores being processed may differ. Thus, the flow of ore through the equipment during a campaign changeover must be controlled to ensure that one or more of the ores from the current campaign can be completely eliminated before the ores from the new campaign are introduced.The simulation architecture employed for this project is Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) combined with MS-Excel as a user interface. A fixed step discrete event orientation is assumed as the simulation framework. A set of model constructs was built for the project with a specific Canadian milling operation in mind, but was designed to be representative of a broad class of milling operations. The constructs are implemented as class objects within the VBA structure, each with a number of properties and methods. The collection of VBA objects forms a composable modelling toolkit. These objects can be linked together by users, via MS-Excel, to represent a broad range of milling operations.

"The flotation process of native Rare Earth minerals such as bastnasite, monazite, mixed minerals of bastnasite and monazite, using the new effective collector Dh was studied in this paper, respectively, and the flotation properties are described. The good qualities of the new collector Dh were revealed through comparing with other collector of Rare Earth minerals. The test results of different ore samples show that at moderate pulp pH (8.5-9.5), Rare earth minerals can be effectively separated from barium, calcium and silicon bearing intergrowth minerals (barite, calcite and silicate minerals) and high quality Rare Earth concentrates can be obtained successfully by the new collector Dh, acid silica gel, turpentine and reagents fitting together rationally. In order to determine optimum technical conditions, the effect of pulp pH, pulp temperature, pulp density and the effect of dosage of reagents (Dh and acid silica gel) on the flotation were investigated in the test.Simultaneously, the paper explores the mechanism of the flotation of Rare Earth minerals from intergrowth minerals. The infrared spectra for Dh and Rare Earth cation by analysis in theory shows that Dh formed chelate complex with Rare Earth cation and were adsorbed on the surfaces of Rare Earth minerals. The mechanism of the intergrowth minerals depressed by acid silica gel can be explained as gummy colloid hydrolyzed from acid silica gel which are selectively absorbed on the gangue minerals, making them hydrophilic and depressed, with pulp pH value of alkalescent."

Stockpiles have always been a necessary part of coal mining except, perhaps, when a person was mining only for the needs of his family from a seam on his home place or coal mined for the use of a small hamlet and carried to each man's house as it was mined. Then it may have been stockpiled at each man's place for several days or on the village common. Mining with this limited production required waste stockpiling. Stockpiling of the products of coal mining, both coal and waste material, has always been a necessity. Very little coal has ever been moved directly or immediately from the working face to the point of consumption and burned. It has always been expedient to stockpile the coal some- where and store the waste.

"INTRODUCTION.Street manholes for underground power and signal circuits, and for sewers vary in size from small openings that a workman can enter, to large central vaults. As the gas hazards in manholes are similar to those in mines, the mine safety committee of the Bureau of Mines was asked whether the miners' flame safety lamp is a practicable device for indicating inflammable gases in manholes.The coal miner detects firedamp (methane or CH4) with his flame safety lamp by observing the luminous can or the increased length of flame that appears when 1.5 per cent or more of the combustible gas is present. The lamp flame also warns him of lack of oxygen by going out when the oxygen becomes less than 16 to L7 per cent. A tentative rule regarding the proposed use of safety lamps at manholes has been suggested previously as follows: ""Testing for gas: Do not enter manholes until you have .assured yourself that the manholes are free from dangerous gases, by testing with an approved safety lamp, by ventilation, or by other adequate methods."" The Bureau's committee recommended that miners' flame safety lamps are not suitable,testing in manholes because hydrogen gas may be formed therein. The flame safety lamps approved by the Bureau of Mines for use in aseous mines are safe in presence of methane and while not tested against the members of the paraffin hydrocarbon series (CnH2n+2) higher than methane they been have been used therein; the lamps should not be used in hydrogen or acetylene they can initiate explosions in presence of these gases."

"Process mineralogy’ is a form of applied mineralogy which focuses on addressing problems associated with the processing of ores. ‘Mineralogy’ is the scientific study of minerals and ‘mineral processing’ is the production of concentrates from ores. ‘Process mineralogy,’ however can be defined as the practical study of minerals associated with the processing of ores, concentrates and smelter products for the development and optimisation of metallurgical flowsheets, including the waste and environmental management considerations. This hybrid discipline consists of teams that include geologists, mineralogists, samplers, mineral processors and often others, working together. The degree of cross-training, communication and trust dictates the potential capacity of the team and where an appropriate work dynamic is fostered, in which relationships flourish as much as does the ethic of technical excellence, it is possible to develop technical capabilities that surpass those of conventional teams. The world’s demand for metals is ever increasing and ore deposits available for extraction and processing are lower grade and more complex, often containing deleterious elements that require tailored treatment. Generally, in the past, the technical challenges only needed to be overcome and assessed economically to make an ore deposit viable; increasingly and in the future, a more sustainable approach including environmental and societal considerations is needed. Process mineralogical assessment is increasingly providing the critical information that stands between failure or collapse and survival or success of some mining operations. In this paper, selected case studies are used to demonstrate the valuable role of the process mineralogy tools being used to provide the platform for innovative technology development. Their common attributes are discussed and distilled, thus providing some insights and potential guidance for addressing some of the likely future challenges of the mining industry."

Modern civilization, modern industry, and modern standards of living, bring into, sharp relief the present-day essentiality of metals .and minerals, and the wide and diversified use which is made of them. Any attempt, therefore, to appraise the international situation today must take into consideration the metal and mineral resources of the world. If, as some believe, the world is divided into two distinct ideologies of political belief, one unalterably opposed to the other, so that armed conflict is unavoidable, then the question of national strength in mineral resources becomes of paramount importance. If, however, it is possible to avoid war by raising the standard of living in the underdeveloped ?areas of the world, thus ensuring all peoples everywhere against the dread spectres of starvation and disease, then the development of the world's mineral resources assumes even greater importance. Today it is difficult to realize that, prior to the industrial revolution in Great Britain, only a few of the metals and minerals now in common use entered into the everyday life of the people. !iron and steel, copper, lead, tin, and zinc, usually in .their unalloyed forms, along with the more common industrial minerals, were those most widely used, and then only in limited amount. With the advance of technology in metallurgy and in fabricating skills, the list of commercial metals and minerals has expanded until today they number more than eighty.

That the maintenance of proper air conditions is a most important factor in the control of occupational hazards is shown by the large amount of material presented each year through the technical journal's on the effects on workers of injurious dusts, gases, and variations in temperature and humidity.. SUMMARY OF RECENT LITERATURE ON EFFECTS ON WORKERS OF EXPOSURE TO DUSTS The subject of the control of dust and dust diseases continues to be a matter of serious concern in most of the industrial countries of the world, as indicated by the following summary of reports published in a number of foreign countries as well as in the United States. Australia. The Workmen's Compensation Act of 1920 for New South Wales3 provided for the promulgation of schemes for the compensation of workers dis- abled by silica or other dust. In 1924 the prevalence of silicosis and tuberculosis among Sydney stonemasons, quarrymen, sewer miners and rockchoppers was investigated by a Technical Committee of Inquiry, appointed upon the recommendation of the New South Wales Board of Trade. The findings of this committee were published by the Government in 1925. No scheme was promulgated by the Government and in 1926 the Act was amended limiting its scope to workmen disabled by disease caused by silica-dust. This was promulgated and gazetted on September 16, 1927, and applies to men working in sandstone as stonemasons, quarrymen, rockchoppers, and sewer miners in the County of Cumberland.

Flame safety lamps have been used in gaseous mines since the Davy lamp was introduced, more than 100 years ago. During the last decade the flame safety lamp has been rapidly replaced by the electric lamp as a device for illuminating the miner's working place; in the United States the electric cap lamp has been widely adopted. For example, in 1911 approximately 45,000 flame lamps and no electric lamps were being used in the Pennsylvania bituminous mines, which were then producing 35 per cent of all the soft coal mined in this country; by 1918 the flame lamps had decreased to 17,000, whereas electric lamps-mostly of one maketotaled nearly 48,000. In Great Britain during the same years the total of 723,934 flame lamps decreased to 590,185 and the electric lamps gained rapidly from 4,298 to 156,521. No later reliable figures are at hand. However, before the flame lamp becomes obsolete, it is fitting that the Bureau of Mines compile a permanent record of a device which has served the mining industry for more than three generations, and not only made possible the development of entire districts that otherwise could not have been worked but undoubtedly saved the lives of thousands of underground workers. Flame safety lamps are capable of doing more than the name indicates. First, under normal conditions, they can be used in a mine atmosphere that contains an explosive mixture of gas and air without great danger of exploding such a mixture, though such use of a flame lamp should not be permitted. Second, to an experienced man they indicate percentages of gas much lower than the explosive limit, and thus can be used to indicate to workers the approach of an unsafe condition in the mine atmosphere. Third, flame lamps will not burn in an atmosphere greatly deficient in oxygen, and they therefore warn the users of such deficiency in time to withdraw to a place of safety. Flame safety lamps are still used rather widely in the United States for general illumination and to a still greater extent for detecting gas. Many coal-producing States require fire bosses to use these lamps in gaseous mines, and the regulations of several States specify that a gIven number of such lamps be kept available for emergency service.

RECENT events have emphasized with renewed force the well known fact that war greatly intensifies the demand for certain metals, particularly for iron, copper, and zinc. Any increase in the use of iron and steel, whether in war or peace, is also accompanied by increased consumption of those metals which find their chief application as ferro-alloys, such as nickel, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium. Further, since high temperatures are essential for the production of all these metals, activity in the metal industry is inevitably accompanied by an insistent demand for refractories. For example, in North American practice the consumption of magnesitic hearth refractories is frequently expressed in pounds per ton of steel. This quantity (not including straight dolomite) ranges on individual plants from about 7 to 12 pounds. When the industry is operating at approximately full capacity, the ratio of refractory to steel tends to increase, since the tonnage of steel produced is recognized as of paramount importance, and this leads to the harder driving of furnaces and less regard for the effect on refractories. It should also be observed that the cost of refractories per ton of metal produced is always so low, in comparison with other items, that it may even increase while the cost of metal per ton is being reduced through more continuous operation and the use of higher temperatures. As one prominent Canadian copper metallurgist has tersely expressed it, he is "not in business to save refractories but to smelt ore". The effect of war demands and of general industrial activity upon the production of basic and neutral refractories is clearly shown in Figure 1, which gives the value of chrome ore and magnesitic-dolomite produced in Canada during the period 1907 to 1937. Tonnages have not been shown, as these are not available for the full period; such figures as have been published from time to time are not strictly comparable, since both raw rock and finished products have on occasion been included. The preliminary figures for 1938, which are now available, have been prepared by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics on a different basis from those immediately preceding, and have therefore not been shown.

In the pursuit of comfort and safety, the wonders of science have given us controlled heating and cooling, thus enabling us to enjoy all the aspects of present-day living to an extreme never previously •envisaged. Man's attempt to conquer the elements largely involves con-trolling the temperature around him. Without having conquered this aspect, his body energy would be consumed in trying to maintain physical comfort, rather than being invested in the explorations which have resulted in man's control over the forces of nature. The indirect methods used to obtain the most agreeable temperature environment were developed because of the natural tendency to strive for increased safety, convenience and comfort. Until the twentieth century, when heat generated by atomic fission became a reality, man's only source of heat, except for that of the sun, came from his discovery of fire.

Albert Einstein once said, ?the important thing is not to stop questioning.? In the mining industry, a lack of inquisitiveness may lead to a blissful ignorance but it certainly will not increase efficiencies. While one may claim necessity is the mother of invention, questioning and analyzing how methods and systems can be improved is the catalyst to discovering necessities. Understandably, when working in the middle of Canada?s oil sands, where trucks operate around the clock every day of the year, it is nearly impossible to pull the nose from the grindstone long enough to provide thorough analysis. But, fortunately, some manufacturers/inventors have assisted by examining the process and the ensuing headaches within this application.
