A knowledge of the principles of punctuation is essential to effective and intelligible writing, for the ease and pleasure of the reader, and even his understanding, may depend upon the choice and the placing of punctuation marks. To 'punctuate' is to mark with stops or points; the word comes from the medieval Latin punctuare (punctuatus), which in turn is derived from the Latin punctum, a point. The purpose of punctuation is to show the manner in which the writing is to be understood; to indicate the relations between parts of a sentence and between successive sentences. To some extent "it does for the eye what vocal stress does for the ear", but especially it marks logical relations. Some punctuation marks, such as those indicating admiration, exclamation, and interrogation, are rhetorical as well as grammatical, but most of the common ones are logical, or grammatical. My discussion will be confined to grammatical punctuation in ordinary writing. .'The problem of punctuation in text matter", as George Summey * says, "is to employ words, points, and paragraph breaks in such a way as to achieve at the same time clearness; proper distribution of emphasis, and the desired kind of movement." The criticism of the punctuation of a sentence or of a group of sentences is not final until the context, within the paragraph, is read. A paragraph is a sentence or a group of sentences forming an independent unit of the composition; it represents a unit of thought. A multiplicity of paragraphs produces a choppy effect; 'on the other hand, paragraphs of. excessive length are tiresome, because the belaboring of one unit of thought wearies the reader. This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimina- tion of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To deter- mine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with refer- ence to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope. Although the hypothesis as to coking quality finds but partial support in the chemical analyses, its consideration has led to a method of predicting from an analysis with a fair degree of certainty whether any given coal will coke by the ordinary process. The unbroken transition between coals originally similar but now classed in widely different groups, whether of the same age or of different ages, as a result of dynamochemical action, appears demonstrated by the analyses as well as by field observation. "SUMMARY The Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project includes a 3.34 kilometer subsea tunnel excavated by TBM with an excavation diameter of 13.71 m. The tunnel will incorporate two road decks, each employing two traffic lines and shoulder with the daily capacity of 100,000 light vehicles. The tunnel alignment crosses full face rock sections with heavily fractured zones due to tectonic events as well as a long central stretch of difficult mixed face and very variable soft ground conditions. The demanding ground conditions and the large diameter in combination with realized face pressures well above 10 bar required a highly specialized and well adapted TBM. The paper describes the project challenges and the related technical solutions incorporated within the TBM design as well as the real site experience. INTRODUCTION In 2013, a 13.71 m diameter Mixshield was manufactured in Germany for the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project. The delivery of the TBM in late 2013 was a major milestone for the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project, also known as the Eurasia Tunnel Project. The Eurasia Project (www.avrasyatuneli.com.tr/en) consists of a 14.6 km route including a 5.4 km tunnel segment in its central part crossing the Bosphorus. The 3.34 km subsea section of the tunnel was excavated in closed mode using a Mixshield TBM. The remaining tunnel length is constructed by sprayed concrete lining (SCL) method followed by a cast in place (CIP) lining or by cut and cover (CC) structures for the TBM transition boxes (Figure 1, right). Other project sections on the European and Asian side consist of upgrading and widening surface access roads towards the tunnel. Conceptual ideas of connecting Asia with Europe via a tunnel crossing the Bosphorus have been around for an extended time and only became realistic towards the end of the 20th century based on significant technical developments in mechanized tunneling. Feasibility studies for a new Bosphorus crossing in 2003 and 2005 confirmed and suggested a road tunnel in its present alignment as the preferred solution. Following an international tender process the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey assigned ATAS, a special purpose company formed by Yapi Merkezi (Turkey) and SK E&C (South Korea), to design, build and operate the Eurasia Tunnel Project. The Implementation Contract was signed in February 2011. In 2012, Herrenknecht AG was selected as the supplier for the 13.71 m Mixshield TBM."

This paper describes results from small scale tests conducted to determine the distribution of pressure on target plates when subjected to loading due to the detonation of a buried mine in various media. The tests are conducted by using saturated sand, dry sand, and water as the loading media. Different stand-off distances are investigated. Kolsky bars and pressure sensors are used to determine the free-field pressure - time profile of the output of the charge at any location on the vehicle bottom. For verification of the pressure results at certain distances, the specific impulse measured by utilizing different size round plates are employed. In order to investigate the loading mechanisms, high speed cameras are applied. The small-scale test results can be scaled to full scale by using verified scaling laws.

Mine fires have occurred since the mining of coal was begun, and they are still occurring. The resulting economic waste may become considerable (219),3 especially if a fire is allowed to assume major proportions or to get beyond control temporarily. It is important, therefore, to act promptly whenever a fire is suspected and to have every action count. To do this effectively, it is necessary to know at the earliest possible moment and thereafter what is happening in a remote or inaccessible area. It is equally important to know before¬hand what may be expected as a result of any proposed combative measure. The logical method of combatting a fire demands the cooperation of both mining engineer and chemist. They should decide the course of action to be taken, drawing upon the mining engineer's intimate knowledge of the physical structure of the fire area, the cost and time required for proposed operations, and the probable efficiency with which they could be carried out, and upon the chemist's knowledge of the results to be expected therefrom.

The calculation of costs for an underground mine, as well as the planning of the equipment and materials to be used, is a complex and time-consuming process. The estimation depends on a multitude of parameters, and all mining processes are interconnected. A novel tool has been developed that enables automated calculation of underground mines and allows for the comparison of the effects of changing individual parameters. Previously, changing individual planning parameters often necessitated a complete recalculation of the mine. The newly developed calculation tool provides an innovative planning aid that allows for more efficient and accurate mine planning and cost estimation. The tool enables the user to implement continuously up-to-data costs and prices. This allows for more accurate planning data and results. The underlying concept of the calculation tool, its implementation at a planned quartz porphyry mine in Germany, and the verification of the tool at an existing underground mine will be presented.

Enterprise optimization is a relatively new optimization approach to mine planning used to jointly consider all aspects of a mining operation affecting the mine planning process and related valuation. In this paper, it is applied at SEMAFO's Mana operations in Burkina Faso, consisting of several open pits and a proposed underground mine. The surface-minable ore is relatively shallow, and the pits are long and linear. The underground operations, as currently envisioned, will consist of a stoping operation accessed by two ramps from the surface. Power is a concern at this property due to local power being produced largely by diesel generators, and it has become one of the key optimization constraints. Other important parameters are the mining and processing rates, underground configuration and cutover elevation. Enterprise optimization was found to improve net present value for the Mana Operations property by simultaneously optimizing multiple parameters and constraints to arrive at an optimal pit and mining phase design, optimal cut-off grades over time, and optimal ore feed based on ore hardness, power constraints, and head wades. Reserves were expanded several times over the course of the study to improve the valuation of the mining operation and put SEMAFO in its present enviable position of ongoing reserve increases.

An advanced Flash Furnace feed system is the key to improving furnace performance. Clyde-WorleyParsons has developed a revolutionary pulseless pneumatic injection feed system technology, capable of delivering a range of benefits to operators of Flash Furnaces. The solution was created by combining the pneumatic conveying and injection knowledge, expertise and technology of Clyde Materials Handling with WorleyParsons' flash furnace process and operating experience. Optimal furnace burner performance requires the feed material to be presented to the burner as a stable, pulseless and accurately controlled flow, distributed evenly around the burner tip circumference. These simple requirements appear obvious, but are extremely difficult to satisfy in industrial environments and are not achieved by conventional feed systems. Our analysis of existing operating furnaces has identified the link between pulses in concentrate feed rate caused by conventional drag chain conveyors and rapid fluctuations measured in the furnace pressure. These fluctuations occur at a timescale close to the reaction shaft residence time and lead to unwanted instability in the primary furnace reaction zone - the flame. Through the use of the solution created by Clyde-WorleyParsons, it is predicted that the much more accurate control of feed rates achieved can lead to substantial improvements in furnace output, increased oxygen efficiency and better control of the composition of furnace liquids, such as matte, blister or slag. All these improvements lead to significant increases in smelter output and efficiency, and deliver high economic value compared to the cost of the feed system. Clyde-WorleyParsons' solutions can be deployed on greenfield sites or retrofitted, and therefore, have the capability to improve feed control at both new and existing smelters. This paper will discuss the field test work undertaken to date, the impact of findings and the ongoing analysis of linkages between instabilities in the various components of conventional feed systems and furnace pressure stability.

SHORTAGES of metals and minerals and substitution of less critical materials for those in which a virtual famine exists received detailed and frank discussion at a recent conference in Washington called by Robert E. McConnell, director of the Conservation Section, Office of Production Management. Representatives of the large engineering societies in the United States and O.P.M. department heads participated in the discussion. To open the session Mr. McConnell called upon Zay Jeffries, chairman of the O.P.M. Advisory Committee on Metal Conservation and Substitution, to summarize the present situation. Dr. Jeffries touched briefly on the status of metal shortages, which has already received considerable attention in the popular press, and said that much of the present difficulty was caused by the too-hasty substitution-without sufficient con¬sideration of the immediate conse¬quences-of metals having ordinarily a small yearly consumption, for those having a much larger annual consumption. As a result, all the alloying metals used in alloy-steel manufacture have become scarce, with the exception of molybdenum; further¬more, despite a reserve of 11,000 tons of molybdenum in this country and despite a normal consumption of only about 3500 tons and a prospective annual production rate of 21,000 tons by October, a shortage of molybdenum is possible before this war is over.

DURING my senior year at college a professor said to his class that a student who failed to obtain a passing grade in that certain subject could not graduate with his class and that his diploma would be withheld until the failure had been removed. In that way for four years a diploma had been made to appear to us as the objective in attending college. We grew up to think that a diploma was the means of providing employment; consequently, a diploma could not be jeopardized and, heeding the professor's remarks, we resolved to put forth special efforts and make good. During one of our class periods this same professor digressed briefly from his prepared lecture in metallurgy and advised the boys to join a national technical society. He spoke with earnestness and sincerity. After class we students discussed those remarks. We concluded that the professor had not convinced us. We were already members of technical societies at school and saw no need of joining another. In fact, even up to that moment a society had never indicated to any of us that joining it had any relation to landing a job, and we were fully aware that joining another society meant paying out more money, for fees and dues, which money we then needed to buy food, clothes, and perhaps a new slide rule. Furthermore, we knew that joining a society was not part of the curriculum and, therefore, the diploma could not be withheld if we did not follow the advice. Our conclusion was that we would not join but would concentrate on our work that assured getting our diplomas.

A significant portion of Outotec's business relates to the application of fluidized bed for processing a wide range of industrial materials, including gold ore and gold concentrate. As part of the former Lurgi and Boliden organization, our division constructed the first industrial reactor for roasting sulphur-bearing materials in 1950, based on the principles of fluidized bed technology. This process, when combined with efficient heat recovery and off-gas treatment and its conversion to sulphuric acid, became the standard for processing sulphur-bearing ores. In the last 60 years we have delivered more than 265 plants and developed (in addition to the standard fluidized bed solution) variants of the fluidization technology, such as the circulating fluidized bed and the bubbling fluidized bed. This paper describes the different options of the fluidized bed technology for gold roasting reflecting on main process design criteria.

This paper describes the development of an alternative technique for measuring the matte level height in sulphide smelting furnaces. The initial studies involved applying electrochemical oxygen probes in a smelting furnace to measure the oxygen potentials of the matte and slag phases. However, these measurements were not successful as a result of low temperatures, preventing there ference electrode from attaining equilibrium during the measurements. These trials were followed up by using oxygen probes containing a (Mo + MoO2) reference electrode instead of the(Cr + Cr2O3) reference electrode used previously. It was shown that with some further development work, it should be possible to measure the oxygen potential of these mattes accurately. Further measurements were performed with a magnetic sensor in sulphide mattes. It was shown that an electronic signal, which is proportional to the magnetic susceptibility of the surrounding material, was generated during immersion into liquid matte. These measurements were extended and done in a smelting furnace. Initial results indicated that when the magnetic sensor was dipped through the slag layer into the matte, a signal was generated as soon as the sensor came in contact with the matte. Measurements are ongoing in order to record (on a computer for improved accuracy) the signal as a function of distance when the sensor is immersed through the slag layer into the matte phase. The magnetic sensor measurements may be the solution to a matte level measurement problem that has existed for a few decades in matte smelting furnaces.

During the World War, potash shipments to the United States ceased, and recourse was had to domestic supplies. High war-tine prisms stimulated interest in various sources, and domestic production increased rapidly. This report concerns types, quantities, specifications, and uses of non-metallic minerals as a basis for improving their supply, conservation, and utilization. Supply-demand details concerning mineral fillers, roofing granules, and roofing rock used in asphalt are incorporated in this report, along with highlights on production and sales of roofing, floor tile, and other related asphalt products of California. Comparable data for the United States are included. Although large quantities of commercially prepared mineral fillers are used in asphalt for paving and related applications in other States, addition of commercial fillers for these uses rarely is required in California because of the natural fines available. On the other hand, California manufacturers of asphalt products other than paving utilize about 300,000 tons of asbestos, diatomite, limestone, mica, soapstone, slate, and other nonmetallic minerals as filler, mainly for roofing and flooring. Also, about 500,000 tons of roofing granules is produced in California, most of which goes into roofing manufacture in California. In addition, a significantly large and growing tonnage of relatively coarse mineral aggregates are used on low-angle, built-up, asphalt roofs to produce an attractive surface and offer protection against the elements. Nearly all minerals used in asphalt products manufactured in California come from local sources, except asbestos and mica--and there are indications that local deposits of these commodities could be utilized in some use categories.

Resources added to the global metal inventory through exploration over the past 15 years have been generally of poor quality (declining grades, recoveries and lack of acceptable financial return). Similarly, companies opting for an acquisitions-based strategy have had to pick from a group of poorer quality resources left from previous exploration booms, and will struggle to deliver this metal to market economically. Increasing difficulty in obtaining sufficient social and community acceptance of mining projects and potentially an energy-constrained future may exacerbate this problem, redefining what is considered ‘ore’. There will need to be more focus on deposit quality, defined as sustainable margin in the future business environment.Traditionally there has been a lack of translation of ‘mineralisation quality’ back to mineral project design and mineral exploration. This disconnect is due to two main factors: the first is technical – inherent deposit variability; and the second is organisational and socio-psychological –the mindset of explorers and project managers themselves.There are four elements to value realisation for a mineral deposit: (1) social licence to operate; (2) geological factors (depth, geometry, water and geotechnical, and geometallurgy – influenced by texture, mineralogy, chemistry and grades); (3) financial engineering (capex, opex, future commodity prices, future energy prices), and (4) operating factors (production rate, recovery, energy consumption). These elements are strongly interdependent, and geology underpins and drives linkages between them. A quality deposit addresses all of these elements and thus can be developed in a time frame that allows acceptable returns to the owners of the invested capital.Geological drivers of the above elements can be measured and mapped throughout a deposit. Moreover, when viewed in the context of mineral systems, a predictive understanding of the common causative processes of quality (despite deposit-scale variability) is emerging, and with it the ability to target quality of mineralisation, not just quantity of mineralisation.The second factor is a ‘heuristic software problem’. Current lines of education (and consequently organisational and professional structures) are discipline-based, producing ‘silos’ that do not speak each other’s language and work with different ‘mental models’. People who effectively recognise systemic links between these silos are called ‘boundary spanners’, of which we propose two distinct types: outside-insiders and inside-outsiders. Outside-insiders are people who are within a community, but recognise advances in outside fields and effectively integrate them into the community. Inside-outsiders start outside of a community, and successfully bring new ideas into it. Common traits in boundary spanners are: they seek exposure to (and embrace) key ideas that are outside of the framework of their own specialisation; they have high mental processing ability (MPA) – the ability to connect systems that are currently not perceived to be connected; and they introduce ideas from outside a field into a new context in a way that re-frames the field.The challenge is to identify and nurture potential boundary spanners that can build critical links, in particular between the (largely geoscientific) mineral exploration mindset and the (largely non-geoscientific) project development mindset. IN COMPARISON with recent years 1932 has yielded much less tangible evidence of progress in copper reduction and refining. The industry has been extremely quiet, especially in the United States. Design and construction has been throttled by lack of new capital expenditures. The excess producing capacity of the whole industry and the extremely gloomy outlook for the future have made it unwise to tie up more capital except under special conditions. The plants built during the previous year have, however, been placed in operation. Older plants have been abandoned, temporarily shut down, placed on part time operating basis, or continue to operate at a low percentage of normal capacity. In the United States the Phelps Dodge Corporation at Douglas, Ariz., has completed the remodeling of the former Calumet & Arizona smelter. A new roaster and Cottrell plant chimney was completed this year. Though operations have been limited the new equipment has been found to justify all expectations. The reverberatory plant addition consists of two furnaces 26 by 107 ft. inside dimensions, with a high arch, and modern steel binding of excellent design. Natural gas fuel gives good results. One of these furnaces will treat 1000 tons of solid charge per day with a fuel consumption of approximately 3,000,000 B.t.u. per ton. The larger converters have not only yielded the expected lower costs, but have simplified operations in the converter department. THE Iron and Steel and Institute of Metals Divisions will meet jointly at the Statler Hotel, Detroit, Oct. 4 and 5, during the Metal Congress, Oct. 2-6. The Wire Association, the American Welding Society and the American Society for Steel Treating, together with the two Divisions of the Institute, constitute the Congress this year, and each body offers an interesting technical program. The National Metal Exposition will, as usual, be held concurrently. Visiting metallurgists will find themselves engaged in a bit of research not listed in the program-a time study of how best to exploit in a few days both the Congress and all that the place of meeting has to offer. For Detroit, the beautiful "City of the Straits," is third in rank industrially in the United States, and its great manufacturing plants offer much of metallurgical interest. This is especially true of the automobile plants which will be open to members of the various societies during the week of the Congress.

However, in every real-world case, the cost of the new material or process is an important property that determines which applications the material or process can be used in. Other properties that are important depend on the applications.A recent press report (1) discussing the potential replacement of aluminum radiators with copper radiators in pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles provides an interesting example to reinforce the importance of cost in materials selection. In this case, the displacement of aluminum by copper is being considered because of the more favorable heat dissipation characteristics of copper. Heat dissipation has become more important due to the development of hotter-burning V-8 and V-6 engines. For this application, engineers also consider cost, weight, size, durability, and manufacturing process. The report stated that the development by the International Copper Association (ICA) of the ""CuproBraze"" manufacturing process for heat transfer products was an important development. This technology produces 845 radiators that weigh less, are more uniform in quality, and are potentially more compact. They are also expected to cost less in high production quantities than copper units produced in the past, last three to four times longer than soldered copper radiators, and the process also eliminates the use of lead solder from the manufacturing process."
