The original flowsheet of the TANCO mill consisted of a simple two-stage gravity circuit for the recovery of the tantalum concentrates. With decreasing grade and grain size of the tantalum minerals, considerable modifications to the circuit have been required. This paper discusses the various recent improvements carried out 011 all stages of the flowsheet, which have resulted in a 10% increase in recovery. Future improvements, including on stream analysis, and the possibility of tantalum flotation , are also discussed.

The Shoreline Consolidation Sewer is a CSO control project in Cleveland, Ohio that requires the installation of 5,000 feet of 72-inch inside diameter pipe using microtunneling methods. After award, the contractor submitted a value engineering proposal to eliminate two deep shafts and install the tunnel in two drives instead of four. In an example of successful collaboration, owner, contractor, and engineer worked together during the initial construction stages to modify the design and update the contract documents. This paper examines the importance of exible requirements in contract documents and a collaborative environment between all parties to successfully deliver a project.

Ore mineralogy defines the properties during processing and metal extraction. Fast and frequent monitoring of the mineral content and related process parameters brings value to the mining operation and material processing. Decreasing ore qualities and increasing prices for raw materials require a better control of processed ore and a more efficient use of energy. Traditionally quality control in mining industries has relied on time consuming wet chemistry or the analysis of the elemental composition. The mineralogy that defines the physical properties is often monitored infrequently, if at all. The use of highspeed detectors has turned X-ray diffraction (XRD) into an important tool for fast and accurate process control. XRD data and their interpretation make the difference in the identification of minerals, in describing their distribution in ore bodies and in their beneficiation during processing. The use of statistical techniques such as Partial Least-Squares Regression (PLSR) or Principal Component Analysis (PCA) on XRD raw data has been successfully trialled to determine raw materials and processed ores, in addition to well established methods for mineral identification and quantification. PLSR can be used to correlate process parameters directly from the XRD pattern without investigating the mineral content. Hidden information present in the XRD pattern but not determined with traditional methods can be used to improve the characterisation of the analysed materials. The practical use for the direct determination of process relevant parameters during exploration and ore beneficiation will be illustrated in several case studies from mining and ore processing. Laboratory test-work has established that two classes of redox catalysts based on anthraquinone and bipyridinium derivatives are effective in accelerating the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite (RI) in the aeration step of the Becher process. Two water-soluble anthraquinone derivatives are efficient: 9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonicacid, disodium salt (catalyst AQ-2,6) and 9,10-anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid, monosodium salt(catalyst AQ-2). When 0.2 per cent w/v of either was added during aeration the rate of metalliciron removal was accelerated by two to three times. Furthermore, the addition of either compound resulted in magnetite (Fe3O4), the iron oxide phase preferred in commercial practice, being formed. However, both AQ-2,6 and AQ-2 were rapidly lost from solution during aeration although their catalytic activities persisted even when their concentrations in solution were low(<0.05 per cent w/v). The negatively charged anthraquinones were lost from solution most probably by adsorption onto the magnetite that has a net positive charge at the pH values encountered during aeration. To address this problem, the catalytic activities of positively charged bipryridinium derivatives were tested. Two water-soluble bipyridinium compounds, paraquat (1,1’-dimethyl-4,4’-bipyridinium dichloride) and diquat (6,7 dihydrodipyrido [1,2-a:2’,1’-c] pyrazinediiumdibromide), were found to significantly accelerate the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite, and both gave magnetite as the oxide product in the laboratory tests. Moreover, recycle tests showed they were not lost from solution as quickly as were the anthraquinone derivatives. Results in larger scale plant laboratory reactors also showed a significant increase in aerationrates when diquat was added and magnetite was again the oxide formed. However, the oxygensupply to the reactors was insufficient to achieve the maximum effect of the catalysts on theaeration rates. The limited supply of oxygen in a full scale aerator may prevent the application ofthe catalysts in a commercial Becher operation. Stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine through 1978 had been traditional overhand cut-and-fill, shrinkage or square set. High costs, low-productivity and safety concerns prompted the mine to search for and adopt a "bulk mining" technique as a primary stoping method. Blasthole stoping had been successful but it is very development intensive, and was not suitable for the mine&apos;s accelerated mining program. Vertical Crater Retreat stoping was selected, and today accounts for over 50% of ore production. Case histories representing both the successes and failures of VCR stoping in the mine are discussed.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 377 natural gas samples from 19 States and two foreign countries. Of this total, 373 samples were collected during calendar year 1970. The remaining four samples were collected during previous years, but releases granting per-mission to publish the analyses were not received until 1970. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Twelve previous publications have presented the results of 9,050 gas analyses prior to 1970. Federal and state regulations, in an effort to reduce acid rain, are becoming increasing more stringent regarding sulfur content of fossil fuels. Whereas coal from Illinois and Ohio contains between 1.5 and 37. sulfur, Wyoming has billions of tons of coal reserves containing less than O.5/% sulfur. However, much of Wyoming&apos;s coal is high in moisture, 25-30%, and low in energy, 8,200 to 8,900 BTU, vs. 10,500+ BTU for Illinois and Ohio Basin coals. Wyoming currently ships in excess of 130 million tons of coal to utilities as distant as Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. With freight charges ranging from $12.00-$20.00/ton, more than $1.5 billion a year is spent to transport water. A test shipment of more than 50,000 tons of Wyoming coal has recently been made from Mobil&apos;s Cabello Rojo Mine, south of Gillette, by Burlington Northern to the Robert&apos;s Bank British Columbia coal terminal for transloading and shipment to Taiwan Power Company. This coal assayed approximately 8,400 BTU/lb. and 277. moisture. Carbontec Energy Corporation feels the future availability of dried coal containing 11,000+ BTU could substantially enhance the potential export as well as the domestic market for Wyoming coal. Large and small utilities, along with industrial furnaces require tens of millions of tons of Wyoming, West Virginia, and other Eastern The federal government is encouraging the expenditure of hundreds of million of dollars by utilities to retrofit their boilers to allow them to burn higher sulfur coal. This program, if carried to completion, would cost many tens of billions of dollars, with the net result being high power costs sustained by the utilities. These costs will be passed on and paid for by the American consumer. A sensible alternative would be the burning of low sulfur coal by the utilities, without costly capital and operating expenditures. Carbontec Energy feels the successful operation of a Carbondry Coal Drying Plant in Wyoming will be the forerunner to other similar and larger operations in the State. CARBONTEC RESEARCH The activities of Carbontec&apos;s personnel to develop a viable process to dry sub-bituminous and lignite coal goes back some 14 years; in fact, for some of us it goes back to 1962 when we were involved in a program under which lignite coal from Truax Trayer&apos;s Velva mine was placed in low sulfur coal, which are burned alone or blended with high sulfur, Midwestern coal. Carbontec believes that a high BTU. reasonably priced, shippable coal fuel produced in Wyoming and delivered at costs competitive with Eastern low sulfur coal, could offer substantial benefits to Wyoming coal producers, utility customers, and to the State of Wyoming.

Central to any business is its Asset Management Plan which encapsulates the business context and key organisational objectives such as profitability, safety and environmental standards. Life Cycle Planning (LCP) is a key component of an overall Asset Management Plan. A comprehensive approach to Life Cycle Planning forecasts the financial expenditure required to support the performance of the asset over the business life. It incorporates capital, maintenance and operational expenditure along with an estimation of economic life. Within its body the LCP provides the detail of the maintenance plan and method of its execution. Once optimised the LCP becomes the overarching plan executed through the application of several elements of the Asset Management Plan to ensure the return on investment from the assets is optimal. Each of the elements of the LCP is bound by a set of loops that provide information based on the analysis of outcomes. These loops drive the continuous improvement of performance and cost over the life of the asset. In this way we ensure that the LCP is a dynamic plan responsive to the changing business environment. The paper being presented today will describe the process undertaken and the outcomes derived when this approach was applied to a $600 M+ coal handling and preparation plant in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin. It will also delve into the difficulties encountered from both technical and cultural aspects; the latter proving to be the most difficult to manage. It will describe the hurdles and barriers that hampered progress including the human influences and the natural desire to revert to what has been done in the past when things became a bit difficult. In the end the results are there to show that the upfront expenditure and investment in time was time and money well spent and the outcome has the operation well placed to manage the assets in a manner designed to deliver the optimal business outcome.

It is the ability to stand on one&apos;s feet, transfer knowledge and thoughts to others, to reach an objective professionally or otherwise by leading groups through a channel of planned thought. Each day group speaking plays an important part in making or marring success, and the engineering profession often provides this opportunity and requirement. An ability to speak effectively develops courage, poise, confidence, and prestige for the speaker. The technical man cannot be reluctant to face an audience. He is often called upon to do this in presence of employees, supervisors, and other groups. His ability to speak effectively is as much a requirement as the fundamentals of his profession. The three fundamentals of effective speaking are: (1) Enthusiasm and Confidence. These are joined because of their close relation. (2) Preparation. This includes knowledge of the subject. (3) Presentation. By this is meant the features of delivery.

Sun Metals Corporation Pty Ltd (SMC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Korea Zinc Co Ltd (KZC) is a company formed to develop, construct and operate a zinc refinery, 11 km south of Townsville in North Queensland. The project opportunity exists because of on-going consumption growth for refined zinc metal, technological, environmental and economic obsolescence of existing zinc processing plants, and a prolonged ædroughtÆ of new zinc processing capacity under construction. The Project will utilise proven technology developed by KZC at the Onsan refinery in Korea. The Townsville Refinery has been designed to be the most environmentally-friendly zinc refinery in the world, and in particular to resolve the issue of secure, long term treatment of the ironbearing content of the zinc raw materials.

Given the global inventory of low grade and refractory gold deposits, processes that could turn these challenged deposits into mines are of considerable interest. Such gold deposits have low value and potentially high operating costs and so they pose special challenges for the mining engineer and metallurgist. Conventionally, refractory gold ores have been processed by whole ore pressure oxidation and roasting, or flotation followed by roasting, pressure oxidation or bio-oxidation of the concentrate. Halide-based processes have recently been developed that might be applied to concentrates. Low grade refractory gold ores have been processed using heap bio-oxidation followed by cyanide heap leaching or milling. Other processes are emerging. Barrick has completed an inventory of emerging technologies (1). A summary of the current status of these developments will be presented with the view that, with additional development, some of these technologies or a combination thereof may unlock the value of these deposits.

Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; and third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of States or Provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

QUALITY and size do not ordinarily go hand in hand, but there is good evidence that both these attributes reached a new peak at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in New York just concluded. Certainly, the total attendance of 2500 was far above any yet attained, as might be expected with the recent rapid growth of Institute member- ship. General comment indicates that the quality of the papers also was notable, though not measurable by so definite a yardstick as attendance. During the meeting 49 technical sessions were held, at which more than 250 formal papers were presented. In addition, there were some thirty special meetings of committees, Divisions, and other Institute groups. In reporting the Annual Meeting eleven years ago the statement was made that "unless the Engineering Societies should build for themselves a new building it is probable that no meeting can be larger," and "the fifth floor, where a buffet lunch is served each day, has reached its full capacity and it seems quite evident that any future development of Institute meetings must be along the lines of quality, not size." Unfortunately the angel to succeed Andrew Carnegie, who financed the building of the present home of the Institute 35 years ago, has not yet &apos; appeared. The heat transfer coefficient between liquid slags and solid surfaces is important for the design and operation of metallurgical reactors. An experimental technique developed for the purpose of measuring the heat transfer coefficient between liquid slags and solid metals is described. During the initial heating up of a Ni cylinder upon immersion in a liquid slag, a layer of frozen slag initially forms, then melts. The heat transfer coefficient measured during the initial rapid heat-up of the Ni cylinder, is approximately twice as high as the heat transfer coefficient measured during the final heat-up of the Ni cylinder subsequent of the liquidus temperature of the slag. The technique was tested in various melts i) NaNO3, ii) NaCl, iii) Na3AlF6 and iv) 2FeO*SiO2, giving consistent results. It was found that the heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing bath superheat and stirring. The heat transfer coefficient during the heating up following complete remelting of the frozen slag, is related to the slag superheat(AT) and the specific stirring energy(W) per kg of slag(E) as follows.

Although known since 1902 , the Capitan iron deposits have not been mined mainly because of the low grade of the ore . A small amount of exploratory work carried on at an early date was reported . C. E. Johnson , district engineer of the Bureau of lines for New, Mexico , visited this propert , and as a result of preliminary sampling and mapping by the Bureau3/ and the Federal Géological Survey , an exploratory project was conducted during March , April , and liay 1944. Further mapping and logging of the vagon -drill samples was done by V. C. Kelly , geologist , of the Survey .

Randgold Resources’ Loulo-Gounkoto Complex is one of the largest gold mining operations in Mali, West Africa. The mine, which is situated on the western border with Senegal, treats more than 4 Mt/a of ore through a conventional three-stage crushing and ball milling circuit followed by a carbon-in-leach plant. Ore supply is achieved by a combination of open pit and underground mining, with the majority of the ore supply sourced from the Gara and Yalea underground mines situated approximately 2 km and 6 km respectively from the gold plant.In 2011, Randgold Resources commissioned Golder Associates to perform an evaluation study for providing structural backfill to both the Gara and Yalea underground mines using the current gold plant tailings. The test work performed as part of the evaluation study concluded the need for a tailings cycloning and dewatering facility capable of producing slurry at a solids concentration of 65 per cent with a particle size distribution that had minimum 25 per cent passing 20 µm and less than 5 per cent of -5 µm material. Tailings desliming was required to ensure a consistent feed quality to the paste preparation plants and to ensure that the system would be capable of handling variation in the feed composition from the gold plant.WorleyParsons, previously TWP Projects, was contracted by Randgold Resources to complete the engineering design for the slurry preparation plant, whilst Golder Associates was retained to complete the engineering design of the two paste preparation plants.This paper discusses the test work, design considerations and engineering design of the slurry preparation plant, termed the ‘intermediate plant’, as well as all ancillary facilities required for the delivery of the deslimed slurry to the paste preparation plants located at the two underground mines.CITATION:Swanepoel, M, du Toit, G and Gillot, P L, 2014. The two largest contributors to silicosis in machine men are dust from drilling and dust from blasting. With the advent of the shatter-cut method of blasting, the evils of blasting dust were greatly reduced. The problem of dust from drilling has been attacked from two different angles: (1) The adoption of dustless frontheads or enlarged water tubes, both of which have proved capable of reducing dust concentrations; and (2) The adoption of better ventilation. Many operators are loath to adopt dustless frontheads or enlarged water tubes on Leyner drills because of the increased repair costs on drills, and also because it has been found difficult to enforce &apos;the proper usage of dustless machines: for example, workmen sometimes plug the vents in the fronthead.

Mount Tom Price Mine is peerless amongst Rio Tinto iron ore resources around the world. It has provided Hamersley Iron with premium quality, high lump yield haematite ore over the last four decades. The Brockman type bedded ore, containing bands of haematite and shale of varying thicknesses has been traditionally bulk mined to either high-grade or low-grade based on alumina cut-off grades. As open pit mining has progressed deeper into the orebody approaching the keels of the megastructure, increased structural complexity, chemical and physical variations in the ore, unfavourable ore presentation and reduced blending options have become an issue for grade control and may have serious impacts on product stockpiles. The grade blocks and boundaries must be accurately defined according to geological contacts and where identified, selective mining may be applied. Therefore in-pit geological mapping is the definite and ultimate guide to achieve target grades and grade predictions. Under this scenario, it is absolutely vital that the mine geology team ensures this geological knowledge is passed onto the related departments including mining crews as well as to the short- and long-term planners.

THE need for standardizing methods of arriving at definite conclusions regarding the cleanability of a given coal, and for measuring the performance of coal-cleaning equipment, is constantly increasing. Earlier notes by the author on this subject are amplified in this paper, because he believes that better preparation of bituminous coal is a partial solution of the coal operators&apos; troubles. WASHABILITY STUDIES The term "washability" of coal was coined when washing was the universal method of separating coal from its impurities by utilizing their difference in specific gravity. This and analogous terms are still used in their broad sense although pneumatic or air separation is now used to clean coal. These terms are so used in this paper. Too much time or money, can hardly be spent on "feed surveys" to get a "picture" of the coal that is to be cleaned. There have been too many "rule of thumb" methods used. Screen analyses and "sink-and-float" tests on the raw coal enable the coal operator and washery man to predict within reasonable limits the results that may be expected from any efficient cleaning apparatus.
