The report provides guidance for determining those environmental impacts associated with the surface mining of steeply pitching coal seams. In addition to the environmental impacts, four additional issues are addressed, namely (1) Time and motion studies of those coal mining systems employed in mining seams which pitch in excess of 250, (2) Assessment of those mining techniques, (3) Development of rationale for the mining methods employed, (4) Identification of the reclamation practices and determine whether these practices were in compliance with appropriate Federal and State regulations. Five surface mines located in three geologically distinct basins of the United States were analyzed during the period of August through November 1979. The three basins include the Hanna Basin of Wyoming, the North Park Basin of Colorado and the Southern Anthracite Field of Pennsylvania.

Components of bulk explosive products include ammonium nitrate, water, fuel, stabilizers, and calcium nitrate. The physical attributes include prill/emulsion ratio, density, and viscosity and in the case of prilled ammonium nitrate, hardness, size distribution and fuel oil absorption. These components and attributes in conjunction with ground conditions determine all aspects of explosive performance including the risk of fume. This paper presents a fume risk assessment matrix of explosives components and physical attributes as a function of a simple description of ground conditions. Instrumentation to provide a measure of the quality of the explosive product are also described and these include both “on bench” physical measurements and laboratory analysis. “On bench” methods include “in hole “density, velocity of detonation (VOD), detonation pressure and detonation temperature. Part of the quality control process involves a mobile laboratory unit which at this stage can provide measurements of water content, ammonium nitrate content, calcium nitrate content, fuel content, prill characteristics and prill/emulsion ratio. This unit can be taken to sites to enable the testing of bulk and sensitized products at site rather than after transportation.

Two of the open-pit, copper-molybdenum mining operations of Duval Corporation are located in the foothills of the Sierrita Mountains approximately 30 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona. In March 1959, mining from a moderate sized porphyry deposit known as the "Esperanza orebody" was begun at a rate of 10,000 tons of ore per day. Some five years later, a sizeable group of mineral claims west of Esperanza became available to Duval. Earlier exploration and development drilling in this area by others indicated an orebody of greater size but lower tenor than that of Esperanza. A drilling program conducted by Duval not only verified the results of the prior drilling but in addition, revealed a continuation of the mineralization to the south and east. Thus was developed the Sierrita orebody. Open pit design delineated 414 million tons of ore containing an average copper content of 0.35 percent and a molybdenum content of 0.036 percent. In April 1966, the office of Emergency Planning authorized General Services Administration to undertake a program under the Defense Production Act to en¬courage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national defense. Duval's Sierrita Project was brought to GSA's attention in May 1966 on November 28, 1967, an agreement providing for the development of the Sierrita Property was consummated with GSA. In March 1970, the first copper-molybdenum concentrates were produced in the 72,000 tons-per-day concentrator. Pre-production stripping exceeded the scheduled 105 million tons despite the comparatively short lead time available to equip the mine, build the mine plant facilities, and staff the technical, supervisory, and labor forces. Shortly before the first concentrates were produced, plans were being formulated for a program to increase processing capacity by approximately 15 percent, which entailed increasing overall mining capacity by approximately 50,000 tons per day. This program is scheduled for completion early in 1971.

Changes in world mine and smelter supply sources of zinc have led to changes in zinc supply patterns in the United States during the past 3 years, 1970-72. The result has been a growing reliance on foreign sources of zinc metal to furnish an ever-increasing portion of expending domestic requirements. This review of fundamentals and historical developments is intended to provide background in order to place the future of the U.S. zinc industry fn perspective. The properties and uses of zinc are described. A new study on U.S. reserves is presented with description by geographical region and comparisons with older reserve data. The technology of the zinc industry from prospecting through refining is described with emphasis on the metallurgy involved in the various methods of smelting. Production, consumption, and imports are discussed and illustrated with graphs and tables to review the past and present patterns. Government actions affecting the industry are shown.

Functional mineral pigments are used in large quantities in paint, paper, plastics, rubber, textiles, agriculture, and several other industries. U.S. consumption in 1969 is estimated at over 5 million tons a year, valued at nearly $150 million, as shown in Table 1. Originally extender pigments were employed only to lower cost. They were thought of merely as adulterants to replace more expensive prime pigments and binders. However, over the years their role has become better understood, and today their main functions are: - Increasing strength, stability, and service life. - Improving surface properties. - Enhancing application and processing properties. - Extending prime pigments. - Controlling viscosity and package stability - Lowering overall costs of the finished product. The principal minerals used as functional pigments are kaolin, ground calcium carbonate, talc, and asbestos. Other minerals include barytes, attapulgite, diatomite, mica, ground silica, wollastonite, and nepheline syenite. Several synthetic products, including precipitated calcium carbonate; precipitated, gel, and fumed silica; alumina trihydrate; and barium sulfate, compete with mineral products. They are more expensive, but often have more closely controlled particle size or other properties because they can be tailor-made according to the requirements. This paper covers only natural products selling for $10 or more a ton, approximately the lower limit for pigment grades. Data refer only to consumption in pigment applications. For example, such applications as filter aids for diatomite are not included. Key properties of the major mineral pigments are given in Table 2. It is important to note that these properties are primarily physical rather than chemical. In general, these products are sold to performance specifications for what they can do rather than on chemical composition specifications on what they contain.

THE idea of burning blast-furnace gases directly in gas-engines, instead of under steam-boilers, as had previously been done, was first put into practice barely ten years ago, almost simultaneously in Great Britain, Germany and Belgium. The pioneers of this movement made their first experiments with small engines. After these experiments had given satisfactory results, and it had been shown that the thermal value of the poor blast-furnace gases, in spite of defective scrubbing, could with safety be directly transformed into mechanical work in the gas-engine, there very soon arose a considerable demand for gas-engines of large power, similar to the large steam-engines employed in metallurgical works. In face of these sudden requirements, the gas-engine builders were placed in a difficult position; for up to that time the gas-motor was considered as suitable for small engines only, and it was generally believed that the limit of size bad been attained with 100 to 150 effective h.p. in a single cylinder. Manufacturers of gas-motors, however, did not underrate the advantages offered by this new field for their manufactures, and it so happened that in Germany the Berlin-Anhaltische Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft, of Dessau, was the first to undertake the construction of a 600-h.p. two-cycle gas-engine, with two cyl¬inders of the Oechelhäuser-Junkers type, for the Hoerder Mining & Smelting Company. The liberation of intimately disseminated impurities from the coal matrix often demands that the material be ground to a high degree of fineness. Similarly, some technologies for coal utilization require superfine particles (i.e., sizes less than ten microns). This implies additional costs for coal preparation plants due to the high energy and media costs associated with fine grinding operations. Besides, there are problems such as sever product contaminations due to media wear and impairment of the quality of coal. Hence, proper choice of grinding media type is important from the viewpoints of cost reduction and product quality.

This two volume report addresses slope stability of surface mine spoils within the Interior Coal Province. Sixteen (16) mines were visited, pertinent data and samples collected, and reported spoil instabilities back-analyzed. Laboratory test results are compared to back-analyzed material properties. Available methods of slope stability analysis are reviewed and evaluated with respect to application to mine spoil stability evaluation and prediction. Correlation and tentative relationships among spoil material properties, highwall conditions, mining equipment and procedures and empirical observations are presented. Slope stability sensitivity plots illustrate the relative significance of various input parameters on stability. Slope stability input parameters are correlated with site and mining conditions to identify the primary factors controlling spoil stability. Investigative methods, spoil stability enhancement techniques, spoil stability prediction procedures and future study areas are discussed. Appendices include a glossary of terms, annotated bibliography, details of mine visits, and detailed laboratory test procedures and results.

THE following paragraphs, constituting the concluding portion of the Annual Report of the Council for 1903, have been withheld from publication until now, in order to make them as accurate and complete as possible. They will be published in Volume XXXV. of the Transactions in their proper place at the end of the said Annual Report. Franklin Ballou was born in Pittsburg, Pa., May 29, 1845. He was the son of an old resident, Arthur Ballou, a manufacturer and wholesale dealer in vinegar. In early youth Franklin attended the Western University of Pittsburg, but left school at the age of 16 to become book-keeper for his father, upon whose retirement from business, in 1868, he associated himself with Walter C. Childs, of Pittsburg, in the manufac¬ture of furnace-grates and asbestos-cement for blast-furnaces. This firm was known as W. C. Childs & Co., and did a success¬ful business for several years. In 1869 Mr. Ballou married Miss May S. Wilson, daughter of Judge Wilson, of Lewistown, Pa. In 1876 he spent several months traveling in the West and studying the mining industry, which greatly interested him. In consequence of this journey, he wound up his business in Pittsburg and removed in 1877 to Georgetown, Colo., where for several years he conducted a sampling-works, and built up an extensive business as an agent for the sale of ores, besides engaging to some extent in mining enterprises. , It is said that he controlled at one time about one-eighth of the output of the Leadville mines. In the early 80's, he became Vice-President and General Manager of the Bimetallic Smelter at Leadville, of which Mr. David H. Moflat was the principal owner. It would permit coal mines to operate continuously instead of intermittently . Intermittent operation increases the cost per ton for mining , and makes the yearly return to labor low . These conditions contribute to serious instability and unrest in one of the fundamental industries of the country and this can be changed only by coal buyers doing their part to insure steady work . The railroads are now required to transport the maximum amount of coal during the winter months when traffic is most interfered with by bad weather and when the maximum amount of coal is used by the railroads to handle other coal . The railroads now use nearly 30 per cent of the total output of coal . About one- third of their freight traffic is hauling coal , so that economy of fuel used by the railroads will produce a considerable gross saving .

"Pressure leaching and pressure oxidation in autoclaves are important alternatives in the extractive processing of gold, copper and nickel ores. The application of advanced control to pressure leach and pressure oxidation autoclaves could achieve significant benefits as has been shown in alumina pressure leaching. This paper compares and contrasts alumina digestion autoclaves to other mining autoclaves with respect to advanced controls. The application of advanced control in alumina with over 30 units controlled worldwide, and its benefits will be reviewed. The design and potential benefits from advanced control for pressure oxidation and leaching will be presented.INTRODUCTIONIt is this author's position and the purpose of this paper to propose that advanced control could be effectively applied to autoclaves in the nickel, gold, and copper mining processes. This is based on the proven effectiveness of advanced control on autoclaves used in the alumina industry for pressure leaching of bauxite ores. Incremental, but significant increases in production could be realized by applying advanced control to autoclaves, as evidenced by the alumina industry, and this not being implemented in other autoclaves in the mining industry.In addition, today the mining industry is being challenged to improve their production methods. In some markets like nickel, there is pressure to improve productivity and reduce the cash cost per ton. While in other markets like copper and gold, demand is vigorous with favourable pricing, and there are advantages to increase production and productivity given limited plant capacity. Advanced control has proven its capability to improve mineral processing operations through increases in throughput, recovery, as well as reducing variability. In today's mines, autoclaves are being used to a much larger scale and with much larger importance, thus it would be beneficial to improve operational performance through the use of advanced control.Accordingly, it is the author supposition that an opportunity exists in the mining industry to use a proven advanced control technology to improve the operations and financial performance of mines using autoclaves."

The development of a water accounting framework that enables consistent and contextual reporting of minerals operationsÆ water use, represents a key sustainable development objective that many Australian minerals companies have committed to. A future water accounting framework will require: key terms and definitions for water metrics for use in the Australian minerals industry that are consistent with the wider water sector, a suite of metrics representing key components of an operationÆs water balance, a calculation method for some of the metrics, and a reporting protocol. This paper presents the methodology that was used to derive these four components. Existing accounting frameworks were reviewed and key terms and definitions that were consistent with current regulatory requirements and voluntary approaches were proposed. A calculation methodology was developed to obtain some of the key indicators and variables that cannot be easily measured directly (eg water loss through evaporation). The adopted terms and definitions typically require a combination of empirical and estimated data. To test the proposed definitions and calculation methodology, values for water metrics were derived for eight sites, selected to test a variety of commodity and biophysical situations. The proposed framework and definitions could deal with the specific situations selected as case studies. The associated calculation methodology produced complete accounts at various levels. Some elements of the accounts could be directly checked against available data and simulations. The framework captured well variations in the reuse efficiencies; reuse efficiency could even vary for similar processes. It is concluded that this preliminary accounting framework provides a consistent language and metrics for quantifying and communicating water management, both at the intersection of the site with the surrounding landscape (through detailed reporting of site inputs and outputs) and within operational activities. Using this consistent framework for quantifying and documenting water use within an operation will provide a platform for compiling and comparing minerals industry water use with other sectors. This may support benchmarking activities within regions or companies and help demonstrate leadership amongst water users in water resource stewardship. The approach presented here is applicable to a wide variety of mining and processing activities, and biophysical environments, and following a period of stakeholder engagement and third party review, is being refined as a first step towards developing nationally consistent water use reporting for the Australian minerals industry.

In block caving, the rates and sequencing of undercut production blasting, drawbell blasting, and mucking are the key levers for attempting to manage cave performance. Cave performance encompasses a range of factors, which include growth, shape and the effect of the cave on the abutments, excavations, geological structures and lithology. We compare production data in several panels in the Grasberg DMLZ and GBC block caves with the seismic response in work areas, around geological structures, and in geotechnical domains. These comparisons enable evidence-based conceptualising of the effect of production rates and mining layouts. By also considering the correlation of seismic release rates in different parts of the rock mass, the wider influence of a cave can be gauged through considering possible stress and / or deformation transfer. This concept is not novel, but it is rarely implemented in a routine fashion, principally because production data rarely are easily available. Previously, it has also been used to retrospectively compare seismic hazard between different mines. This paper discusses practical, day-to-day tools to manage seismic response to mining. Therefore, the paper presents a methodology for presenting seismic release and production rates on integrated plots at any time to facilitate quick identification of correlated spatial regions. This methodology explores the production data collection and geolocation at Grasberg, which will be described in some detail.

All the more reason to hone technical skills, reconnect with old contacts and get one’s finger on the pulse of the industry.More than 400 did just that in the balmy sunshine and among the saguaro cactus of the Tucson venue of the SME Arizona Conference.Giving the keynote speech was Patrick Merrin, vice president at Hudbay Minerals (see box), while the luncheon speaker was University Distinguished Professor Mary Poulton, director of the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources at The University of Arizona.“Attendance was great, especially given the copper price,” said Ta Li, vice president of business development at Tetra Tech and 2001 SME President. “The luncheon speaker was one of the better ones in recent years. Her talk contained a lot of fresh ideas, and practical versus theoretical concepts.”Talk about values, not economicsPraise was unanimous for Poulton, who gave a thought-provoking talk on “The New Face of Mining: The Culture Change for Compatible Mining.” Corporate social responsibility has been embraced by the metals mining industry, and it’s being done right, she said. “So why do we have more conflict? Why are there more protests? Why does permitting take longer and longer?” Poulton made a case for an approach based on compatible, rather than sustainable, mining to present a new face of mining that can be compatible with communities, cultures and the environment, and still be profitable. When the mining industry starts to talk about compatibility between what it is doing and what “me,” as the consumer, wants, what “we,” as citizens of a community, want, and what’s good for the “world,” we’re going to see the next culture change happen, she concluded."

"Introduction.The Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment station has been studying the production of sponge iron for the past four years, and during 1923 progress advanced to the point industrial applications can be safely considered. A furnace was operated commercially at silver City, Utah, producing about three tons of sponge iron daily.The Bureau was led to undertake this work by the interest in the use of sponge iron for copper precipitation and for conversion to iron and steel in the electric furnace.If a piece of iron oxide is completely reduced at such a low temperature (850 to 900° C) that no sintering or fusion takes place, then the piece of metallic iron formed has the same size and shape as the original piece of oxide on account of the removal of oxygen, the structure is finely porous, exposing a large surface of iron, and the apparent density is less than that of the original piece of iron oxide. This material is called ""sponge iron"". Chemically, it is a very reactive material."

The response of reclaimed gold tailings to acid leaching was investigated in the laboratory, followed by a pilot-plant program in which the operations of CCD, CIX and SX were tested with plant feed material. These results formed the basis for the design of the extension to the existing uranium plant at Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine, commissioned in July 1977. This circuit consists of slimes-dam reclamation by bucket-wheel excavator at a rate of 100,000 t solids per month, acid leaching in pachucas, a five-stage CCD washing section, two parallel C1X absorption columns and two elution columns, SX and an ADU precipitation section. Barren solution is recycled to the CCD section as wash and to the repulper at the slimes dam. The performance of the plant during the first year of operation is compared with the predictions on which the plant design was based. Rated capacity was achieved within three weeks of start-up at a nominal dissolved uranium recovery in the ion-exchange section of around 98%. Owing to recycle, the over-all recovery in the ion-exchange and solvent extraction sections is somewhat higher than this figure.

We are regularly told that before making a new investment one should seek the advice of his banker. If we were to place the subject matter of this paper before bankers. other than those who have experience in our mining camps, their reply would probably be evasive. However, if for example: a mining company asks them for a loan and offers as security certain mining investments, they are, in most cases, explosively candid. The idea is preposterous, unless, under Section 88 of the Bank Act, the mining company is able to deposit with the bank, gold or silver bullion, to an amount sufficiently in excess of the loan, to provide for what the banker describes as a reasonable margin of safety in case of contingencies. In addition the directors of the mine personally must jointly and severally guarantee payment of the loan. With any of these conditions missing the banking atmosphere becomes chilly. The local manager explains that the general situation, and particularly European conditions, are so unsettled that head office has warned him that his discretionary powers must not be exceeded under any circumstances.

Trench cutter systems have been used in civil engineering for the least 30 years for the installation of deep cut-off walls, retaining walls and foundation systems. The systems are constantly advanced to achieve greater depth, penetrate through harder rocks a provide a bigger footprint of the cutter. The state-of-the-art equipment can reach down to 250 m vertical depth and penetrate all different types of soils and rocks up to 150 MPa unconfined compressive strength.In mining, especially in commodities with a high value and where the ore deposit has a small footprint, cutter mining with vertical attack from the existing ground level will be a new, cost-efficient approach where conventional open pit mining is not economically feasible due to a high stripping ratio. The same applies for open pit mines that have reached the end of their conventional mine life and where going underground is also uneconomical. The BAUER Cutter Mining System, which has been adapted to the special needs of mining, is a new technology that will allow mining at depths of up to 250 m.The same system can be also applied to ore dykes, be it vertical or slightly inclined, concentrating the excavation on the actual orebody and minimising the strip ratio and the contamination of ore. The system can be adapted to the dimension of the dykes or veins and to the rock conditions.BAUER’s latest approach is to use the vertical cutter mining technology for the extraction of sea floor massive sulfides from the seabed in deep ocean waters. Due to the compact footprint of the system and the vertical attack for mining, extraction of the ore can be concentrated on the hot spots, minimising the environmental impact on the sea floor both for mining and manoeuvring the remote-controlled mining tool.CITATION:Schwank, S K, 2015. The report described improvements and applications of the Hybrid Computer facility. Improvements implemented under U.S.B.M. Contract H0252035 included expansion of the capability to model nonlinear seam behavior, installation of a color video output display monitor, and further development of software capabilities. To demonstrate the capability of the system, firstly, the influence of nonlinear seam behavior response to the occurrence of coal mine bumps was fully investigated and secondly, the effect of improper mining sequence on bump occurrence was demonstrated. In addition, the system was applied to the analysis of a series of practical coal mine problems. Mines in three coal seams were analysed to investigate the parameters which contribute to the occurrence of coal mine bumps.
