Ever-increasing demands for information on the chemical and physical properties of coals, their proper classification rind adaptability for various uses, their economic evaluation in the complex relationships between the costs of production, distribution, and selling, and their beneficiation and amenability to conversion to more valuable and. new products of commerce have necessitated an appropriate and flexible program. To most these requirements, initiation of new projects and new physical facilities has been made.

It’s not just an IT initiative but is really about upgrading the strategic thinking,” explained Michael D’Argenio, vice president of digital transformation and customer experience at SKF Americas.Learning from those who went beforeD’Argenio cited the examples of two companies that saw entirely different outcomes in the face of digital disruption. The well-known case is that of Kodak, one of the storied brands in history, whose business was disrupted by the advent of digital photography. Although it invented digital photography, Kodak decided to box it up and put it on the shelf because it was scared of disrupting its business in photographic fim. Instead, it was disastrously disrupted from the outside.Less well known is the case of Encyclopedia Brittanica Inc., publisher of the longest-running English-language, general-knowledge encyclopedia in the world. Sales peaked at 120,000 sets in 1990, plunging to 8,000 sets in 2012. In 20 short years, it saw not one but two massive digital disruptions. The first was in 1993, when Microsoft published the first digital interactive encyclopedia on a CD-ROM, called Encarta, priced at just $99. The second was in 2001, when a communitycurated, free website called Wikipedia launched. Taking the opposite approach from Kodak, Encyclopedia Brittanica looked at its industry, its company and its customers through the lens of the new technologies, made a prediction about the future and, based on that prediction, took a bold move. Having identified its core value proposition as the delivery of reliable, high-value, verifiable knowledge, Encyclopedia Brittanica replanned, restructured and rebuilt its company from the ground up to deliver that same value proposition, only in a different way. It stopped producing the only product that it had known for 244 years and began producing digital products that it sold to educational institutions.“There is a lot to learn from the Encyclopedia Brittanica case,” said D’Argenio. “The company embraced its market change, it embraced its customer change, and it rethought what it needed to do to be successful. Because it owned that disruption internally, it was never disrupted from the outside. It continues to operate today and is as profitable as it has ever been.”"

This Bureau of Mines report is an expansion and update of Information Circular 8719 and comprises maps and tables listing the name, location, and other pertinent data concerning certain fuel-related projects. The maps show the locations of the planned or proposed facilities. The tables include information on projects involving the proposed or planned development of fuel resources, as well as the development of storage, transportation, and conversion facilities. The report covers the 24 States west of the Mississippi River including Alaska and Hawaii. Of the 808 projects for which information is provided, 219 concern coal mines, 246 concern electric generating plants, and 115 concern uranium mines; Energy Supply and Environmental Coordination Act coal conversion notices are also included. Because of the dynamic nature of the energy industry, many uncertainties exist and some of the listed projects may never become realities. Also, no attempt has been made to determine the degree of certainty or viability of each project.

To meet an increasing demand for minerals, mining operations are moving to ever more remote regions. The lack of a local energy supply and infrastructure, coupled with social and regulatory demands for lowered environmental impact of mining operations, presents an opportunity for a seemingly unlikely competitor ? a nuclear power plant. The Modular Pebble Bed Reactor concept, currently in various stages of research and development around the world, offers a high degree of reliability and safety with minimal consequences for the local or global environment. The passive safety features of this design eliminate the need for the extensive active safety systems that add significantly to the cost of current water-cooled reactors. With the MPBR, as with all nuclear plants, there are no appreciable quantities of waste products released to the environment during normal operations. In contrast with conventional reactor designs, the MPBR would also remain radiologically safe even under the most severe abnormal circumstances. The key to the design is the fuel element. Enriched uranium microspheres are coated with various layers of pyrolytic carbons and silicon carbide to form a highly-temperature resistant particle that effectively retains all fission products. These particles are mixed with graphite and formed into 6 cm pebbles. A randomly packed vessel of such pebbles forms the reactor core through which helium is circulated as a coolant. Computer models and tests performed on actual pebble bed reactors confirm that fuel failure temperatures are not reached even during the most severe conceivable loss of coolant accident. The reactor drives a gas turbine cycle with resulting efficiencies as high as 48%, comparable to natural gas-fired units. The low price of uranium fuel and low maintenance requirements translates into competitive operating costs. However, high capital costs prevent the MPBR from competing with natural gas in most markets. In remote applications where no fossil supplies are readily available, the playing field is more level. This paper summarizes the features of two of the more promising candidates for remote applications and discusses the strengths of the MPBR from the perspectives of fuel supply and environmental impact.

NEW place was assigned to the women for their headquarters at the annual meeting of the Auxiliary but they, as usual, occupied a large place in the activities of the annual meeting. The alcove on the Thirty-ninth Street side of the building was a busy place on Monday morning, as the members of the various sections from New York to California greeted each other. The registration was conducted under the supervision of Mrs. Wolfes, Miss Georgene Davis and Mrs. Jennings, while Mrs. Hursh, Mrs. Hyde, Mrs. Charlton Reynders, and others dispensed tickets to the various functions that had been provided for entertainment. There seemed to be the usual number registered, but when only one member of the District of Columbia Section made herself known everyone wondered why the large delegation of last year had so dwindled. The explanation appeared next day, when a number of others from that Section arrived, telling of a delightful reception on the night before, at the White House. Mrs. Hoover had honored the "Canaries"¬(the organization of Lone Girl Scout' workers) the officers of the Section, and their husbands, who for once became only "so and so's husband." Luncheon was served on the fifth floor on Monday, the hostesses for that day being Mesdames C. F. Ayer, Willis Burns, G. W. Farny, H. G. Moulton, and T. T. Read. THE POSSIBILITY of producing pig iron from iron ores of British Columbia for a west coast primary iron and steel industry has been investigated by the provincial government and by commercial interests on sever.al -occasions. The latest study is that currently under way by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. The Company is studying the possibility of making pig iron from the oxide calcine resulting from the roasting of pyrrhotite. tailings used in making sulphuric acid for fertilizer production at Kimberley. A comprehensive report on the subject .of establishing a primary iron and steel works in the Province, based on local iron ores, was prepared by Arthur G. Mc-Kee and Company of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1942 for the B.C. Minister of Mines and is available to interested parties. A detailed survey on the subject was also pre-pared in 1954 by Dr. G. P. Con-tractor, then .of the British Columbia Research Council. Considerable information is there-fore available on most aspects of an integrated primary iron and steel industry in British Columbia to supply the needs of the western provinces. To date, however, no basic iron industry has been established despite the .occurrence of high-grade iron ore deposits on the offshore islands and the high freight charges on iron and steel products brought into the area from Eastern Canada and overseas producers. The chief deterrent has always been the relatively small and highly diversified market available to a local steel producer. Other major fact-ors have been the lack of sufficient proven reserves of iron ore, and the difficulty of making pig iron, suit-able for steel manufacture, economically on a small scale. Technical and economic conditions have changed considerably since World War II and the establishment of a primary industry based on electric furnace production of pig iron or on one of the direct reduction processes, coupled with electric furnace steel production, may now be economically feasible.

"1 AbstractThe production of alumina from bauxite using the Bayer process generates 0.7 to 2.0 ton of the residue known as red mud per ton of alumina. This material has no large scale current use and is usually stored. This paper shows that it can be used in a suspension with water as a gas effluent cleaner with high efficiency to remove SO2. It can substitute other materials currently used reducing the overall environmental impact and potentially reducing the cost of gas treatment.2 IntroductionThe production of millions of tons per year of alumina around the world generates from 0.7 to 2.0 ton of the residue known as red mud per ton of alumina. The vast majority of the red mud is stored in large sealed lakes. Due to the high reactivity this material is considered dangerous and currently there is no operating process capable of reuse all the material produced at any refinery. These lakes after filled of solid material eventually have the surface revegetated. In any cases they will remain as an environmental passive and need monitoring for decades. The search of industrial processes that combine the cleaning of gas effluents emission and reuse of these residues can contribute to the reduction of the overall impact of the alumina production process.The main objective of this work is to study the efficiency of the red mud as alternative raw material for the control of emissions of SO2 in combustion gases. Usually this is made through alkaline solutions of CaCO3 or NaOH in absorbing equipments like spray towers or packed column. This project main objective is to study the reaction of the SO2 with a suspension of red mud and water in order to obtain the basic parameters to design equipment capable of process this reaction on a pilot scale. With that goal compositions of red mud on spray were processed with flow of gas containing SO2 with concentration similar to the exhaust gases of the combustion process of the refineries."

The Hamersley Basin of Western Australia holds significant tonnages of detrital iron deposits. Formed by a cyclic weathering and eroding sequence of nominally barren banded iron formation, they may form rich proximal accumulations of iron cemented gravels distal from any obvious hard-rock iron mineralisation. While generally small, they nonetheless represent excellent economic targets as they are near surface and easy to mine. The relatively high density of iron detritals, when compared with their sedimentary hosts, makes the gravity method the primary method of exploring for these blind deposits. Identification of possible trap sites is used as a precursor to gravity surveying, with magnetics used as an ancillary method prior to drilling. Application of the gravity method in this terrain is not straightforward. Detrital trap sites are best developed next to the spectacular cliffs that form the range fronts to the Hamersley Ranges. Precise terrain corrections and use of first vertical derivatives are routinely applied to gravity data in an effort to map every possible gravity high that may reflect the presence of a detrital accumulation. Extensions to Hamersley Iron Pty LimitedÆs BS2D deposit were discovered by the routine application of gravity. This methodology has been used to create a model by which exploration for detrital deposits continue to the present day.

It has become increasingly evident that sustainable metals production in the 21" century requires producers to balance the needs of cost effective, high value production with that of responsible plant operation. This is becoming more difficult as lower grade and more complex feed materials, including recycled scrap and residues, arc being processed to reduce production costs and decrease exposure to primary metal market fluctuations. One particular facet of the metals industry facing these challenges in the 21 st century arc copper producers. The recent steady decline in the copper price has seen the industry cut expenditure, tighten control on income streams and focus on high returns on capital investment. For these reasons copper producers arc looking towards flexible technologies that can deliver high value products, with minimal environmental impact at low capital and low sustainable operating costs. Ausmelt's Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) technology for copper production is a low cost, proven technology for the processing of both primary and secondary copper materials. Both the smelting and converting operations introduce significant advantages in environmental performance, improved process efficiencies and high rates of metal recovery. Ausmelt has made significant gains in the past 4 years in establishing a strong market position for its copper technology. New installations in China, South Africa and India as well as existing operations in Zimbabwe and China have demonstrated its effectiveness. This paper reviews the application of Ausmelt Technology for both smelting and converting of primary and secondary sources. It discusses Ausmelt's design and implementation philosophy, and how this philosophy meshes with the needs of the end user.

The Azores islands are located on a triple junction where the American, African (AFR), and Euroasian (EUR) plates meet. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), oriented N-S, represents two branches of the T; an E-W branch defines the EUR/AFR boundary called the Terceira Rift. The nature and structure of this plate boundary, as well as the dynamics of the interaction of tectonics and volcanism remain unconstrained. The Azores plateau is seated on a mantle domain of anomalously low seismic S-wave velocities, and gravity and geoid anomalies, where the apparent thick crust is thought to relate to larger degrees of melting initiated at greater depths [1]. The cause of these anomalies is controversial but many authors consider the presence of an anomalously hot/wet enriched mantle probably supplied by a plume [2]. The geochemistry of the subaerial and most submarine lavas from the plateau reinforces the plume model beneath the Azores [3-4]. The origin, size and present location of the plume is under debate but an area near Terceira is the favoured plume centre [5]. [ ] SEAFLOOR HYDROTHERMAL SYSTEMS IN THE AZORES AREA (36ºN ? 40ºN) More than 150 active and fossil hydrothermal systems are known in the oceanic seafloor [6]. "INTRODUCTION Considerable interest has been shown in the prospective use of Diesel-powered haulage equipment in both coal and non-coal mines. Foreign technical magazines have devoted considerable space to discussions of the use of Diesel locomotives in European mines and some mention of it has been made in technical papers in the United States. The Bureau of Mines has extensively tested the gases produced in the exhaust of the Diesel engine under various atmospheres and conditions of use; it has established a schedule of tests for permissibility of Diesel engines for use in underground coal mines, including, gassy or dusty mines.This publication provides information as to the successful use of Diesel-powered equipment underground workings in the United States and Europe, briefly discusses the characteristics of some of the toxic gases found in the exhaust of Diesel engines, and points out that Diesel-powered equipment can be used with reasonable safety in underground minus if necessary and entirely feasible precautions are taken."

The United States Geological Survey has estimated 1 that the State of Washington contains 11,412,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and 52,442,000,000 tons of subbituminous coal, in beds more than 14 inches thick. As the present rate of production is about 4,000,000 tons a year, Washington apparently contains coal enough to supply Pacific coast markets for many years. The character of the coal beds of Washington renders the production of clean coal very difficult, and a considerable proportion of the output is washed before it is marketed. In 1915 Washington ranked fifth among the States in the amount of coal washed, though only twentieth in total output. In that year 37.9 per cent of the coal produced in the State was treated in surface cleaning plants. On account of extensive folding and faulting of the coal measures, mining in Washington presents many difficulties; therefore a description of the methods employed at some of the mines may be useful in planning operations in other regions, and is presented in this bulletin. The coals of Washington differ in quality, ranging from true lignites in Cowlitz County in the southern part of the State to anthracites in the Mount Baker district of Whatcom County, in the north~ rn part. Most of the output consists of subbituminous and bituminous coals, the latter including both coking and noncoking varieties. Analyses of the coals of the State and descriptions of the beds from which the samples were taken have been printed in publications of the United States Bureau of Mines.2 Details of coal beds and analyses of the coals of King, Kittitas, and Pierce Counties have also been published by the Washington Geological Survey; 3 and most of the coal beds of the State are described in some detail in a bulletin of the United States Geological Survey.4 In 1918 mining was in progress at 72 mines in the State 4a; 46 of these mines each employed more than 10 men underground. These mines were distributed as follows: Thurston County, 1; Lewis County, 7; Kittitas County, 14; King County, 16; Pierce County, 6; Skagit County, 1; and Whatcom County, 1. During that year a total of 5,847 men were employed, 4,172 underground and 1,675 on the surface. The average number of days worked in the State was 275, and the average yearly output per man was 706 tons. Coke is made only in Pierce County by four companies, which have a total of 341 beehive ovens. In 1918 they produced 93,699 tons of coke. Up to 1919 mining machines were little used in the State. In 1917 only 6.61 per cent of the coal :produced was undercut by machines. In that year 58.95 per cent of the coal was mined by hand, and 34.44 per cent was shot off the solid. The explosives used were as follows: Black powder, 36.6 per cent; dynamite, 38.l per cent; and permissible, 25.3 per cent. The State of Washington is divided naturally into two parts by the Cascade Mountains which extend north and south somewhat west of the middle of the State. The coal areas east of the range will hereafter be referred to as eastern Washington-though nearly all of it is west of the middle of the State-and that on the west side as western Washington. The geographical distribution of the coal fields is shown in Plate I. Exploration of the State has not been exhaustive enough to preclude the possibility of discovering, besides the foregoing, other districts that contain deposits of coal in commercial quantities.

The Bureau of Mines in its safety work has for a number of years advocated and recommended the use of permissible portable electric cap lamps for use in all mines. In the course of time required for the evolution from an unsatisfactory to an efficient and safe light, but encouraging increase in their use has been experienced in Alabama. As early as 1916, small installations of these safer lamps were made or an experimental basis by several operating companies, and the first complete mine installation eras made at the Virginia mine of the Gulf States Steel Co., July 1, 1918. From the experiments in 1316 and the complete equipment of the first mine in 1918 gradual progress has been made until there are now 30 installations with 10 operating companies; as a result 20 mines have been put entirely and 5 partly on, closed lights, and 3 companies equip their engineering departments; two installations of closed lights are maintained by other companies for emergency use. One of the mines partly on the electric cap lamp is an ore mine - the only one in Alabama (and one of the very few in the United States) that uses closed lights. Introduction The relationship between precious metal miners and gold refiners has been uneasy over the years. Reasons for this uneasiness and lack of trust include technical factors, economics of scale, and cultural differences. Technical factors take two forms. First, concentrates, precipitates, and sponge produced at the mine site are notoriously difficult to sample. A nonrepresentative sample can be the cause of misunderstanding and distrust. Dote, however, is relatively homogeneous and can be correctly sampled and analyzed with greater reliability. Second, the technology and chemistry of fine gold and silver production is complex and quite different from dote production. Most mining companies are content not to be involved with additional processing steps. From the standpoint of process economies, it is easy to see why miners and refiners are separate groups. Mine location is dictated by the natural occurrence of ore bodies. Heavy capital investment requirements for infrastructure in remote locations usually limits companies to produce the first marketable product from a mine. Beyond that point, the economies of scale and large capital investments for refineries generally dictate that the outputs of several mines be combined to feed a single refinery. The refin¬ing process is so complex that refineries are generally built in larger cities with a skilled labor pool. Therefore, only the largest mines can afford to refine their own output. Lastly, there are cultural differences between the miner and the refiner. The miner, particularly the small gold miner, is by definition a risk taker in a risky business. Refineries, on the other hand, have historically been operated under legal or implied monopolies approved by the government. The government is interested in owning gold, either for currency reasons or because many national mints are major users of gold coins. It is not surprising, then, to find that miners may regard refiners as part of an unresponsive government bureaucracy or, worse, as "city slickers." It is easy for the two groups to distrust each other with these different backgrounds. The interface between miner and refiner does exist and affects nearly all precious metal mining companies and most refineries. This paper discusses the technical and economic aspects of the interface. It points out how both parties can improve the relationship. Technical interface Precious metals selectively dissolve to produce a pregnant solution. They are then recovered from solution by zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe process) or by absorption onto activated carbon. This is followed by stripping and electrowinning. At this point, the mining company must decide whether to ship precipitates (or sponge) to refiners or to produce a dote. Some factors the company must consider are the ability to sample precipitates, concentrates or sponge, security of storage, and production rates. An important factor is the incremental cost (capital and operating) of converting precipitates or sponge into dote at the mine. Generally, mines prefer to melt precipitates or sponge to dote to avoid prob¬lems associated with sampling them. There are three types of fur¬naces used by mining operators to melt precipitates to dote. The first and most widely used is a sil¬icon carbide crucible heated ex¬ternally with a gaseous liquid fuel. The crucible is easy to use and slag can be skimmed before pouring dote. This simple system is capable of handling 1 t/a (32,000 oz per year) gold. It could cost as little as $20,000. More complex systems could cost up to $200,000. The second type of furnace is the gas- or propane-fired rever¬beratory furnace. This is usually used only by large-scale opera¬tors in the silver business. Precip¬itates in reverberatory furnaces come in direct contact with the flame. The large volumes of flue gas can carry significant amounts of dust and fume that must be re¬moved from the gas before dis¬charging it to the atmosphere. In the days when the Rand re¬finery in South Africa used reverberatory furnaces, the silver leaving the furnace in the form of vapor and fume was estimated at 2.2% of the total silver charged to the furnace. The gold in the gases was about 0.03% of the gold charged. Most of this silver and gold was recovered in the exhaust gas scrubber system. These scrub¬ber systems can be more costly than the furnace itself.

Improvements in construction equipment and techniques in recent years have made possible the use of drilled shaft foundations in diameters and lengths not previously considered practical or feasible. Many highway bridge and other structures are now routinely founded on drilled shafts which are 2.5 m to 3.0 m (8 to 12 feet) in diameter and extending over 60 m (200 feet) in depth below grade. There are unique challenges associated with constructing such large and deep cast-in-place foundations and engineers should be aware of the special needs associated with site investigation, construction specifications, material requirements, and quality assurance. This paper outlines a number of special considerations for these foundations, along with strategies that may be employed to improve the reliability and quality of large drilled shaft foundations.

Uniaxial testing was performed on coal specimens to determine the time-dependent response. The testing was carried out on coal from six mine sites throughout the Western United States and Pennsylvania. Testing configurations were varied to allow analysis of moisture dependency, stress level and specimen orientation. Several theories were presented for the behavior of coal due to moisture diffusion. Experimental results showed the correlation between the theories and the actual material response. Coal deformation was found to be highly dependent on the moisture level of the testing environment. Moisture migration causes drying and shrinkage which lead to progressive degradation of the material. The coal tested experienced a rebound if saturated after a period of drying. This type of time-dependent behavior overshadows the dependence on the applied stress level, which, however, still produces a noticeable creep behavior. Analysis of one series of creep test results was performed. A relationship was developed on the basis of a simplified rheological model to describe the coal response to uniaxial stress. Previous empirical formulations in the form of power laws were compared and their deficiencies pointed out.

CRUDE oil production in the United States during 1938 reached approximately 1,214,355,000 barrels, an average of 3,327,000 barrels per day, or 5 per cent below the 1937 record output of 1,279,160,000 barrels. The decreased production did not prevent the stocks of all products from increasing to a total of 575,954,000 barrels by Sept. 30, an increase of 10,957,000 above the total on Jan. 1, or an average daily storage increase in all products of 40,135 barrels.
