"There has been a revolution occurring in underground mining over the last several years, where big headline items such as the Internet of Things (IoT), optimisation, managing data, data mining etc – the list of current catchphrases, goes on. In the end these are nothing new; but the ‘things’ (sensors) are becoming smaller, cheaper and easier to deploy, and the analysis much more powerful as computer processing speeds increase. However, to take advantage of the myriad of devices out there and gain the processing power to analyse and use the data, a reliable ‘conduit’ is needed for that information to be delivered where it can actually be used. That is, a high quality data network.Modern mining is like any other industry in the information age: the access to reliable data is the first, critical step in improving productivity (Stevens, 2015). The convergence of communications onto an IP (Internet Protocol) backbone has been the driving force in enabling the productivity gains in general industry over the last two decades.This paper overviews how this technology has developed as an enabler in accessing productivity and safety benefits, and how it has used access to large amounts of data to manage mining processes underground. Reams of data are useless, but with the reliable receipt, analysis, processing and feedback system in place to use that data, benefits can be realised.Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation, and the importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing. Another emerging driver is the much talked about IoT and data analytics, both dependant on reliable, accurate, high volume data.The author will outline how communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems, and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation and other data hungry systems within the overall mine operation.Mining operations embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to, not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote or automated mining, but also to provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting, particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.How certain mining operations lay the necessary foundations to meet their current requirements, while supporting their visions for a more automated and proactively managed mine, will be explored.CITATION:Kent, D, 2017. "The first recorded discovery of placer gold in Canada was on the Chaudiere River in Quebec's eastern townships in 1832 and the first major production came from placer deposits in British Columbia in 1858 (Verity 1974). Placer deposits were the major source of gold until the late 1890's, although lode deposits were found in Nova Scotia in 1862. In 1896 the Klondike Gold Rush commenced with the discovery of gold by Henderson and Carmack in the Yukon. The peak was reached in 1900 when over one million ounces of gold valued at approximately $22.3 million were recovered. With the exhaustion of the easily accessible deposits, more capital intensive operations were necessary such as those initiated in 1906 by the Yukon Gold Corporation. This giant dredging operation continued to produce until 1966. Today only a few small operations remain.The development of Canadian lode gold mining began in earnest around 1900 when the railroads were opening up the interior and western part of the country. At this time many discoveries occurred, particularly where mineral outcroppings were near surface. Tremendous impetus for exploration and the reopening of former producers followed the elimination of the gold standard by Great Britain around 1931, and more importantly the United States in 1933, with subsequent stabilization of the price of gold at $35 per ounce in 1934. Prior to this the price of gold was basically unchanged since 1717, approximately, $20 per ounce (Verity, 1974; Green, 1973).The depression of the 1930s adversely affected most industries, however for the gold producers it was a very profitable time. Prices of materials and equipment declined and labour was cheap and plentiful. Interest in gold mining was further stimulated in 1936 when a three year tax exemption was declared for all new metal mines. In 1938 a decline in the value of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar benefitted the industry. The second world war provided yet again further incentive for gold production and in 1941 Canadian gold production reached a high of approximately 5.4 million ounces. This figure was not surpassed until 1991 when approximately 5.6 million ounces were produced (Natural Resources Canada, 1996 )."

Available literature published or abstracted in 1953 and 1954 relating to dust prevention and suppression has been summarized and reviewed in this report, and un-published information also is included to outline current practice for those interested in dust control in and around mines, tunnels, and quarries. More and more companies are realizing the value of controlling dust by incorporating suitable methods and devices in the planning stage. In preparation and crushing plants preliminary tests have been made of the fine materials to determine the best type of dust-control equipment to use, and the details of the quantities of air, the number of sprays, the dust-allaying fluids, and the location of hoods or enclosures have been determined in advance. Such planning has paid for itself in more effective control. Similar planning in a tunnel resulted in healthful conditions and low dust concentrations.

"Excavation, the principal mining process, 'which hitherto has been based largely on the intuition and logic of mining men, is increasingly receiving the attention of engineers and scientists versed in rock mechanics. The paper intro-duce the principles of this science in simplified form, directed both to underground and open-pit mining. Reference is made to the large annual tonnage from ore and rock excavations, which in 1967 were responsible for 250 million tons of mineral production in Canada.The urge to transform excavation into a continuous instead of an interrupted process is discussed with references to the various types of energies employed or proposed in rock breakage or excavation. Due to the rapid decay of applied energy in the discontinuous and heterogeneous rock environment, large confined blasts proposed for in-situ mining do not give much expectation of success as yet. Raises and ventilating shafts are already bored in reasonably hard rock. Tunnelling machines will be used for drifting and cross-cutting in the future, but continuous mining machines of the cuttmg and shearing type are not 'around the corner' for stoping typical orebodies. On the other hand, bed mining, particularly of coal, has led the way in continuous mining, and Remotely Operated Long-wall Face (ROLF) experiments are progressing in an encouraging way. Some reflections on the mining environment in relation to the human element are made."

THERE are, broadly speaking, three classes of refractories: acid, basic, and neutral. Fireclay, diaspore, silica, and the sillimanite group of minerals are included in the acid class, which for the most part are not very resistant to basic slags. The neutra! class includes chrome, graphite, and silicon carbide, while most important in the basic class are magnesite and dolomite. Although chrome is a neutral refractory, it has no sharp distinction from magnesitic refractoriness. The two are mineralogically (1) and chemically related, and there is available on the market a complete range of brick from straight chrome to straight magnesite. In many indus trial applications, one. type may be replaced by another. The present paper is confined entirely to such refractories. This paper considers the international market trends of the rare earths and how they are strongly influenced by the by-product/co-product nature of their mining and processing. The two main economic minerals for the rare earths are bastnasite and monazite. Monazite is primarily a by-product of mining ilmenite and rutile and is affected by changes in these markets as well as the presence of thorium. Bastnasite is a by-product of mining iron ore in China and a stand-alone product in the USA. The paper will use conceptional relationships and empirical data to delineate the various by-products/co-products relationships and how they determine observed international market behavior.

This report looks at the application of Shaft Boring (SB) as an alternative methodology to conventional mechanized Drill and Blast (D&B), Shaft Sinking. Various Continuous Mechanized Shaft Sinking concepts, equipment and projects are also reviewed in this report. Their significance relates to designs and systems related to Shaft Boring. Shaft Boring is increasingly a method considered for the excavation of deep and increasingly large diameter shafts for mines in hard rock. Many methods have been used as an alternative for D&B Shaft Sinking.

Introductory: In dealing with a topic so large, one that involves such a multiplicity of details, and that also has certain controversial aspects, it is quite impracticable within the limits of this article to touch upon many most interesting phases and incidents. Also, to bring out the actual truth, it is necessary to make certain categorical statements. The writer believes that all such statements made here-under are supported by facts. Again, however, it is out of the question to cite all the proof. The writer, therefore, will gladly answer any pertinent criticisms or questions and thus supplement the unavoidable brevity of this paper. Controversial points will take care of themselves. Historical: For present purposes the history of gold mining in Nova Scotia may best be summed up in a very few paragraphs, in some of which the writer quotes freely from recent reports compiled by himself. The first material discovery of gold was made in the year 1860. As this and rapidly succeeding discoveries were looked upon as bonanzas, the claims were fixed at a size of 20 by 50 feet, and a yearly rental of $20 was charged. Later the claims (areas) were increased in size to 50 by 150 feet. In the year 1866 a temporarily successful company, so we are informed by a contemporary writer, owned a mill and mining plant worth $6,000. As this fact is cited with admiration, it is apparent that most of the mining and milling must have been done in a very primitive manner indeed.

Method - A direct approach to instrument users, initially by letter and later by telephone or personal contact was made. The resultant data was compiled to give specific use information on the seven instruments. During the course of the study attempts to evaluate the Griswold Gage were abandoned when it became apparent that the gage was not being commercially produced. One company is developing the gage for its own use. The information presented is the result of over 1200 inquiries.

"Extensive literature surveys, research in the project environment and personal experiences both within and consulting to project teams have revealed some consistent ‘people factors’ that contribute most to ultimate project success. Outside of purely technical and business case issues, there are a small number of leadership characteristics – probably only ten – that if correctly applied can positively leverage a team’s impact on project success.Of the top seven project success characteristics that were consistently highly rated in a recent study, five of them were around leadership. The authors have focused on this topic, noting that good leaders need to display the following traits:passionate commitment to deliveryconsistent modelling and reinforcement of correct values and behaviourfocus on managing relationships well and energising teams and individualscarefully clarifying project vision from front-end loading stages onwardseffective decision making.Not every project manager can and does practise these behaviours all of the time, but being aware of them and receiving training or facilitation in improving their application of these skills can equip project managers with the essential tools to markedly improve their own performance and that of their teams.This paper draws upon experiences in the field and provides lessons – both good and bad – to illustrate. In the last 4 years, the high price of silver attracted more interest for improving its extraction. Metallic silver and silver minerals require a high concentration of cyanide and show slow leaching rates and poor extraction. This investigation determined the effects of dissolved oxygen, lead nitrate and a pretreatment on silver leaching from slurry containing quartz mixed with metallic silver and high purity acanthite. Stephanite, pyrargyrite and polybasite were also used in the study. The silver minerals were characterized by chemical assay, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), image analysis (MP-SEM-IPS) and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). Increased dissolved oxygen of the slurry produced the fastest silver leaching kinetics. The leaching of silver from high purity acanthite was determined under various conditions and compared to a new process called ?CANMET Enhanced Leaching Process (CELP). For a slurry containing acanthite, a 23% improvement (from 76% to 99%) in silver extraction was obtained with the CELP. In presence of pyrargyrite and polybasite, silver extraction increased from 75% to 90% and 86% to 99% respectively using the CELP. No improvement was obtained for the slurry with stephanite (99% extraction in 72 hours). However, the sliver leaching rate was much faster with the CELP. XPS analysis of individual silver mineral particles showed that CELP leached surfaces were considerably more oxidized relative to the conventional cyanidation leached surfaces. Leaching of two gold/silver ores indicated that the efficiency of the CELP increased with the refractoriness of the sample. Gold extractions were comparable for the two technologies while silver extraction improved up to 5% (70g/t) for the CELP. The final leach solutions contained lower concentrations of copper, which consequently reduces the effluent treatment costs.

Advances in the technology of abrasion resistant irons and steels, which could help in combating abrasion and wear in mining operations, are reviewed. Nodular irons alloyed with nickel or copper and molybdenum, with acicular, bainitic or bainitic-martensicic microstructures are described. These alloy irons combine excellent castability and relatively easy machinabilitv with good resistance to wear. Recent progress in the development of high chromium molybdenum alloy irons is outlined, by which high temperature heat treatment of massive castings can be eliminated, alloy costs can be reduced and cracking problems avoided. Data is also given on the erosion-corrosion resistance of these irons. Trends in the development of improved cast steels are outlined. Factors influencing the toughness and abrasion resistance of manganese steels are considered. The 6% Mn 1% Mo manganese steels are shown to have a useful combination of toughness and abrasion resistance. Composite castings are seen as a means of com- bating abrasion in applications involving severe impact. A brief appraisal is given of recently developed martensitic wrought steels with improved weldability.

Reefs, exposed rocks, and fast currents made the Hell Gate section of New York's East River a treacherous passage ever since man attempted to sail through the area. As the harbor's importance grew, attempts to improve the channel were made, starting in 1851. This paper discusses the first major organized effort to clear the area, which began in 1869 and culminated in a single large blast in September 1876.

This report covers the third and final year of work conducted under U. S. Bureau of Mines Grant G0166027, "Monitoring of Mine Air Pollutants". The report discusses work performed in three areas. These are the White Pine Mine (WPM) Experimental Unit, diesel mine-vehicle tailpipe emissions monitoring, and mine ambient air concentration data analysis. The WPM experimental unit was used to study diesel exhaust stratification in an 80 foot long dead-end heading while loading ore with a Wagner ST-5D scoop train LHD. The MTU Mine Air Monitoring Laboratory (MAML) was used to gather temperature and CO2 concentration data at 10 locations. Three different ventilation conditions were compared. The data substantiate the presence of strong buoyant forces of the hot exhaust gases which result in temperature stratification in dead-end headings. The diesel mine-vehicle tailpipe emissions monitoring study involved laboratory measurements of diesel undiluted exhaust pollutant concentrations by the portable tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) assembled for in-mine use. The results were compared with simultaneous measurements by standard laboratory exhaust monitoring instruments. These results indicate that accurate field source quality control measurements can be obtained for CO2, CO and NO but NO2 results were low for all engine conditions. The mine ambient air concentration data analysis study included analysis of diesel pollutant concentration data in the Orchard Valley Mine air and comparison of the results with data collected earlier in the White Pine and Brushy Creek mines. The analysis included preparation of lognormal frequency distributions and calculations of C02-based concentration ratios and correlations. In the three mines compared, pollutant concentrations are distributed quite similarly, and the concentrations appear to be controlled to present standards.

Vanadium is subject to only light corrosion in phosphoric acid at temperatures up to 60° C. and has a moderate corrosion rate in this acid at 100° C. It is relatively corrosion resistant in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids up to 60° C, but corrodes rapidly at 100° C. It corrodes rapidly in dilute nitric acid at 35° C. Vanadium is almost inert in 10-percent solutions of formic, acetic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids; in 9-percent oxalic acid it corrodes slowly up to 60° C. and rapidly at 100° C. Vanadium is resistant to corrosion in substitute ocean water, tapwater, and in 3-percent sodium chloride and 10-percent sodium hydroxide solutions. It is readily attacked, however, by 20-percent ferric chloride, 20-percent cupric chloride and 5-percent mercuric chloride solutions. Vanadium is protected by contact with magnesium, aluminum, and steel SAE 4130 in substitute ocean water, by magnesium and aluminum in 3-percent sodium chloride solution, and by magnesium in tapwater. Vanadium protects copper in substitute ocean water. When vanadium and stainless steel are coupled in sulfuric acid solutions, both metals are usually unaffected by contact, whereas the corrosion rate of titanium in sulfuric acid is greatly reduced by contact with vanadium.

Many of you radio listeners have probably never seen a mine . You may be glad of it, but you should not forget that there is a vast army of men in this country who not only have to see mines , but have to work in them day by day in order that you may be supplied with many of the things you need. Specifically , nearly a million men work in the mines of the United States , 700,000 in the coal mines , 110,000 in the metal mines , 100,000 in other mines and quarries , and 75,000 in the oil and gas fields . On a stormy night , the average citizen is apt to think of the perils of the seaman . Particularly in the old days before steamships , many a prayer went up " God help the poor sailor on a night like this . " At the same time , the sailormen often expressed fear for the poor landlubber , exposed as he was to the danger of falling chimneys , swaying signboards , and uprooted trees . So with the miner . Many of you may pity him , for working underground in complete darkness except for feeble artificial lighting , mining coal or ore , drilling hard rock , handling explosives , and perhaps breathing vitiated air . On the other hand , on stormy days , with rain , snow or hail falling , and with the temperature low , or on hot bright days , I have often heard miners joke about the poor fellows who had to stay " on top, " and could not get " down below" where there was no wind , where no snow fell, where the temperature was unchanging , and where a man could have his own working place , arranged to suit himself , with little interference from meddlers and with no automobiles to dodge . So do not feel too sorry for the miner . He is quite apt to be a strong , healthy , hearty person , making pretty good wages , and fairly well contented with his lot .

MINING conditions in Mexico during the current year have been most unfavorable, synchronizing with conditions in the United States, but the outlook for the near future is improving. The chief difficulties met with are because of the following conditions: severe drop in prices of metals; high smelting rates; high prices of supplies; inadequate means of transportation; low efficiency of labor. In comparison with pre-war prices for metals it cannot be said that prices are low, particularly for silver, which recently has gone to a level that would have been considered exceedingly good in 1912. But conditions have changed so greatly that only the most favorably situated properties can operate without loss.
