The need for a sustainable development of ore deposits makes it imperative to be innovative and mindful in creating an economically and environmentally viable operation, while maintaining a good working relationship with the various stakeholders involved in developing and operating a large and complex mining project. This is becoming immensely important as gold ore deposits are becoming more mineralogically complex along with lower grades presenting both metallurgical and environmental challenges that need to be addressed in mitigating risks and improving project economics. This paper presents Barrick?s approach to development of strategic technologies for our long-term sustainable growth through conversion of valuable resources into reserves for both our green-field development projects and the expansion of our existing mining operations. Some of the key strategic solutions, including mineral processing, metallurgical and energy technologies, developed by Barrick and their impact on some of our complex gold and copper-gold ores will also be discussed in this paper. The mining industry is undergoing a period of rapid transformative change.  This is the result of the social and financial accountabilities that the industry is faced with because of the world’s desire to cap average temperature increase to 1.50C above pre-industrial levels (UNFCC, 2016).  To limit global warming to 1.50C, greenhouse gas emissions must peak before 2025 at the latest and decline 43% by 2030.  In hard rock mining, comminution is identified as the major energy consumer, being responsible for 40-60% of the electricity use.  It follows that comminution is the major greenhouse gas emission process of the mine.  All effort is being made to radically reduce the carbon emissions of comminution. Grinding media plays a large role in the energy consumption and carbon emission story.  In recent years industry practitioners have attempted to quantify the grinding media carbon footprint.  This paper makes a definitive contribution to that discussion.  The grinding media carbon footprint is quantified in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emission terms in the context of a grinding media supplier.  Major emission contributors, steel, natural gas and electricity are discussed in detail.  The steel industry transition is a key factor. The paper will explore the steel industry transition and its effect on grinding media manufacturing.  The carbon footprint of heritage steel process routes are analysed and compared with the process routes of the future.  Emerging steel making technologies are presented and discussed.  The future of the steel manufacturing and procurement route for grinding media is proposed. This narrative allows for a comparison between the heritage carbon footprint and the future carbon footprint of manufactured grinding media.  Of equal importance is the opportunity of reducing the grinding media carbon footprint in the field.  The paper explores possibilities of reducing the grinding media carbon footprint at the customer site.  Media in use options are presented that take account of the mineral characteristics, the mill dynamics, and the product metallurgy to optimise both carbon footprint and media performance. It is intended that this is a landmark paper in the discussion of the carbon footprint of grinding media.

"Since early 2015, the price of nickel has dropped from the region of US$6/pound to current levels of around US$4.60/pound (March 2017), reflecting several market factors, but principally due to lower demand from China. Under such conditions, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain operating costs. In addition, labor and energy costs will continue to rise, while nickel ore grades will likely continue to drop. All major companies now accept the need for climate change action and consequently efforts are being made towards lowering carbon-based emissions. Nevertheless, meeting these challenges can also contribute to higher operating costs without parallel innovative developments - which at the same time, under current conditions, major companies are tending to curtail. In this paper, several productivity improvement opportunities to reduce unit operating costs at nickel sulphide and nickel laterite plants are reviewed. Opportunities include: (a) process technology and energy-type selection, production capability, optimization of process intensity and implementation of newer technologies; (b) improved productivity, equipment availability including maintenance best practice; (c) energy savings and recovery opportunities and use of energy surveys and, (d) process modeling and improved scheduling. Such improvements along with an uptick seen in nickel demand going forward should better position the world nickel industry.INTRODUCTION Nickel is an essential metal to modern society, primarily through its use as an important ingredient in stainless steel. Thus, stainless steel finds vital applications in food preparation facilities, as well as important uses in transportation and industrial applications. Canada has always played an important role in nickel production and nickel metallurgy. In the 1940s and 1950s, Canada supplied over 90% of the world’s nickel. However, this proportion has declined considerably to around 10% of the world nickel supply today. Still, Canada remains an important nickel supplier and contributor to nickel extractive technology. Due to the importance of nickel to society, nickel demand is expected to continually rise. On the other hand, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain production costs amid languishing nickel prices. While demand projections show nickel growth, there are uncertainties in actual levels of future market growth. Ore grades are dropping, while labour and energy costs, which are key cost contributors are rising, hence efforts to lower production costs will generally require innovative approaches."

"Specularite ores have poor hydrophilicity and ballability as well as inferior high-temperature reactivity, which restrict the large-scale application of them in the pelletizing and sintering production. Modified humic acid (MHA) organic binders are firstly used for pellet preparation from specularite in this paper. The results show that the drop strength of green pellets is 3.7 times/0.5m and compression strength is 12.5 N/P by using 1.0 wt% MHA as binder. Under the optimal experimental conditions of preheating temperature 980 °C, preheating time 12 min, roasting temperature 1280 °C and roasting time 10 min, the preheated pellets have the compression strength more than 400 N/P, and that of roasted pellets is 2747 N/P. The strength of finished pellets meets the requirements of blast furnace iron-making. MHA is a kind of more effective organic binder for specularite pellets compared with the inorganic bentonite.IntroductionAcid Pellets have advantages of good strength, uniformity particle size, high iron grade and good reducibility, which can be used as high-quality burdens for blast furnaces [1]. With fast development of Chinese iron and steel industry domestic magnetite concentrates with high grade of iron and good firing performances become shortage.Imported specularite ores have advantages of low price and high grade of iron (generally above 67 wt%), so the application of them in pellets is an effective way for sustainable development of pellet industry in China. However, the specularites have not been utilized in pelletizing and sintering at present because of the poor ballability and high-temperature reactivity [2, 3]. Most of the pellet plants use bentonite as binders, the amount of which is about 2~3 wt%. The pellet production practice shows that 90 wt% bentonite is still residual in finished pellets and reduces the iron grade [3]. Developing a new organic binder instead of bentonite is very important to the high-quality pellet production. On one hand, the consumption of bentonite is obviously reduced, resulting in decreasing the ironmaking coke ratio and slag discharge; On the other hand, the iron grade of finished pellets are improved, which brings the benefit for the ironmaking production."

In September 1992, mining in Mexico was opened again to foreign investment by President Salinas-de Gortari, after thirty years of "Mexicanization" of mining industry which limited foreign participation up to a 49 % (or 34 % in case of national reserves) on a Mexican mining corporation. During said period mining in Mexico was controlled by four or five big mining companies and besides mining production was focused mainly on silver, lead, zinc, copper and fluorspar. Suddenly in middle of a big crisis on Mexican mining industry due to low prices of minerals in the world and also in a period on which it seems that mining industry in the United States and Canada has been condemned to die for environmental reasons, it appears a new Mexican Mining Law to permit foreigners to participate in mining in Mexico' trough Mexican mining corporations that they may control up to 100 %

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to determine the feasibility of chlorine-oxygen leaching for treating low-grade zinc sul-fide flotation concentrates. Recovery of zinc sulfides by flotation from complex fine-grained sulfide ores is substantially higher in low-grade bulk sulfide concentrates than in the high-grade cleaned concen-trates required for smelter feed. However, there is no commercial process in the United States for the treatment of low-grade bulk zinc sul-fide concentrates. Leaching experiments using reactors of 500-mL and I-gal capacity were conducted on a bulk concentrate containing 19.3 pct Zn, 35.6 pct Fe, and 39.4 pct S. The effects of pressure, temperature, and percent solids on extraction were investigated. The chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure showed promise for treating the concentrates. Zinc extractions of 95 pct or more were obtained by leaching at 50 pct solids in the temperature range of 1000 to 1200 C. Zinc extractions by leaching with chlorine followed by oxygen at reactor pressures of 50 to 100 psig were independent of pressure.

Within the past decade, incidents of mining–community conflicts have grown dramatically and represent one aspect of a phenomenon known as social risk. Research published in 2014 indicates that a lack of social acceptance is now a leading and costly cause of delays for mining projects.The rise of social risk, complemented by the need to earn the trust of an increasing number of stakeholders so that mining projects can be developed effectively, is problematic for the industry. Conflicts are occurring in situations where companies are fully compliant with regulatory and legal requirements, despite initiatives by mining companies to earn social acceptance and despite the proliferation of tools to support corporate social responsibility. Intensifying the impact of social risk is the fact that it has increased during a time in the global mining sector when companies have had to grapple with declining commodity prices, increasing capital costs and debt levels and the challenges of mining lower-grade deposits.This paper will explore a hypothesis that in today’s interconnected society, social risk in the mining sector constitutes a legitimate business risk that must be managed strategically. The reality facing mining companies is that information, once considered confidential, now travels quickly on social networks and via a growing number of groups and individuals that have earned a legitimate right to be classified as stakeholders in projects that affect their communities. To be successful, it is suggested that companies will benefit from increasing internal collaboration and providing training to equip teams to mitigate social risk to mining projects and protect reputation capital. "Noranda has been investigating a pyrometallurgical process for the direct recovery of zinc from zinc concentrate and zinc and iron containing residues. The process consists of injecting dry zinc concentrate and secondary zinc materials into a molten iron oxysulphide bath, volatilizing metallic zinc into furnace off gas essentially free of sulphur or S02, fixing sulphur contained in the feed materials as iron oxysulphide matte which is disposed, and recovering metallic zinc in an ISP type lead splash condenser. Combustion of petroleum coke with air or oxygen enriched air inside the oxygen containing matte supplies part of the heat, and the products of combustion dilute the zinc-laden gas to a desired level.This paper describes the process concept, thermodynamic background, experimental tests, mass and heat balance calculation for a conceptual flowsheet, environmental stability of the residue and advantages and disadvantages of the process. Experimental tests have successfully proved the process concept and thermodynamic predictions. Direct smelting of zinc concentrate and residues inside an iron oxysulfide bath has a great potential to become a cost effective and flexible zinc smelting process.1. INTRODUCTIONZinc is mainly produced by a roast-leach-electrowinning process route, which accounts for about 80% of the world primary zinc production. This process produces high quality zinc with very high zinc recovery (>95%) but suffers from several major drawbacks such as using high cost electricity as reductant, producing environmentally problematic iron containing leach residue (jarosite or goethite) and the difficulty in treating secondary zinc feed materials containing high impurity levels, such as electric arc furnace dusts from the steel industry, and other complex sources. Also in some areas, markets for sulphuric acid are distant resulting in negative realizations on acid sales.The Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) process is the major pyrometallurgical process to treat zinc-lead concentrate. The advantage of this process over the electrolytic zinc process is its flexibility in treating high-lead, bulk concentrates with high recoveries of lead, copper and precious metals. However, this is a two-stage process involving sintering of Zn-Pb concentrates followed by blast furnace reduction. The process requires large amounts of high-quality coke which is a major operation cost, and the sintering process which results in serious environmental problems."

The demand for natural gas continues to increase at higher than anticipated rates, partly because of its widening price advantage over most other fossil fuels when the cost of air pollution control is included. However, there are clear indications that natural gas supply from the contiguous 48 states and continental shelves will not indefinitely keep up with this rapid growth in demand. Projections are presented which define the extent of potential deficiencies from the 1970's to the year 2000. Among the sources of supplemental gas - imported pipeline natural gas from Canada and Mexico, tanker import of liquefied natural gas, and synthetic pipeline gas from coal and oil shale - by far the most abundant at potentially competitive costs is pipeline gas from coal. The state of development and relative economics of the various coal gasification processes are reviewed. It is shown that synthetic pipeline gas could become a very substantial market for bituminous coal and lignite at current minemouth prices - 60-70 million' tons of coal for each trillion cubic feet of synthetic pipeline gas produced. This corresponds to only slightly more than the current annual increase is gas demand.

Self-potential methods are based ?on measurements on the surface of voltage distributions caused by natural sub-surface oxidation phenomena. The attempt is made to. correlate voltage minima or maxima with the location of mineral materials or geological conditions which may give rise to such naturally produced spontaneous potentials. Any orebody undergoing oxidation is a source of electric current. Ground waters carrying free oxygen attack the upper surface of the body, rendering this the positive pole of a galvanic cell, with the lower portion of the body the negative pole and the surrounding weak acidic waters the electrolyte. Current flow is from positive to negative through the orebody and negative to positive through the electrolyte, i.e., through the surrounding rock. The upper end of a steeply dipping, tabular orebody is hence indicated as lying below the point on the surface where the largest negative potential is observed(l). From its basis, it is apparent that the self-potential method was developed primarily for ore exploration.

"The Search Minerals Foxtrot project in Labrador represents a significant Canadian resource of rare earth elements rich in the sought after heavy rare earth elements (19.8% HREE/TREE). A preliminary economic assessment of the project indicated that the project is technically feasible and economically attractive. A variety of metallurgical test programs have been undertaken which have led to significant streamlining and simplification of the process flowsheet. The improved flowsheet should allow Search to reach production earlier and will use conventional processing equipment. The results of these test programs are presented and discussed in this paper INTRODUCTIONSearch Minerals Inc. (Search) is exploring and developing a number of deposits for rare earth element (REE) recovery in Labrador, Canada. The Port Hope Simpson District is in the southeast of Labrador and is highly prospective for heavy and light rare earth elements. The Foxtrot deposit sits within the Port Hope Simpson REE District (Figure 1), which is 70 km long by up to 10 km wide. The infrastructure available at Foxtrot is excellent; a deep-water port, air strip, and road and power infrastructure are pre-existing at St. Lewis. The three communities of Port Hope Simpson, St. Lewis and Mary’s Harbour are in close proximity to the site."

CHANGES in mining practices have evolved so quietly and unobtrusively that perhaps we scarcely appreciate how truly startling these changes are unless we cast our minds back so as to compare the past with the present. Such retrospection is, indeed, necessary when attempting to forecast the future, for it is only by carefully reviewing the past that we can hope to obtain an indication of what the future may hold in store. In this instance, it is not necessary to delve into the very early history of . coal mining, as our purpose will be served if the last three or four decades are reviewed, a period that is still fresh within the memory of many of us. These earlier days might be termed the selective period of mining, for at that time the coal resources of the world had not been tapped to anything like the extent they are at present and this condition enabled the owners and operators to exercise selective powers and only mine such seams of coal as could be most easily reached an worked at the lowest possible cost and which, at the same time, would suit the requirements of the market. Carrying this thought of selective mining still further, the miner, who was then an artisan skilled in all the branches of his calling, was able to select or discard such parts of the seam he was working that the co al sent out of the mine was acceptable to the consumer with just the barest minimum of preparation. Compare these conditions with the? conditions prevailing today, when coal seams of medium height, good quality, and readily accessible have been largely depleted and the operator has been compelled either to carry on his operations under much greater depths of cover where the coal is more costly to win, or else to work seams of lesser height or of poorer quality.

Today few in business would argue with the idea that we are living in a world that is Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. Coined VUCA by the US Army War College, these four words define the ?turbulence? and ?continuous white water? that the business literature has been documenting for the last decade. This VUCA world became even more relevant to business in 2007 when the Institute for the Future fellow Bob Johansen published the idea of transforming VUCA into Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Agility. We call this VUCA Prime (VUCA'), and place an infinity loop (8) between them to show their dynamic interaction. This paper presents an exploration of the impact of VUCA 8 VUCA' on business and the conditions under which these dynamic forces help to successfully navigate change.

The effect of four different second-phase additions on the strength of composite alloys with a common matrix was investigated. The four compositions each consisted of 85 pct by volume of silver with additions of 15 pct of either tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, or nickel. These particular additives were chosen because of their low mutual solid solubilities with silver at room temperature, the alloys consisting essentially of a dispersion strengthened silver matrix in which the second phase is distributed randomly. Test specimens were prepared by a powder metallurgy procedure consisting of ball milling the mixed powders, compacting, and sintering at 920°C for 1 hr in hydrogen. The constituent powders were of CP quality and of particle size between 2 and 10 ?. The compacts were subsequently hot pressed at 1000 psi and 1400° in an Inconel die, coined at room temperature at 60,000 psi and finally annealed and outgassed in vacuum at 800°F. The microstructures of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1, and the microscopically observed porosity grade was A-2 or better as evaluated by ASTM Recommended Practice B 276-54. The properties of the sintered compacts are listed in Table I, and the load-deformation curves in bending are shown in Fig. 2. The samples, of rectangular cross section, were loaded at the center of 58 in. span, and the reported stress was calculated on the basis of linearly elastic behavior in order to allow the comparison of specimens of slightly different dimensions. It is apparent that the tungsten, molybdenum, and tungsten carbide alloys exhibit very similar deformation curves. The moduli of elasticity were determined from the slopes of the stress-deflection curves at small loads. The measured values agree quite well with those calculated by the strength of materials approximation proposed by Paul1 for the elastic constants of mixtures, the calculated values being 15.0, 15.0, 17.4, and 13.4 million psi, respectively, for the tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, and nickel combinations with silver. The strength of the Ag-Ni composition is appreciably lower than that of the other three alloys. The discrepancy between the two groups is accounted for by the following characteristics of deformation and failure which were observed microscopically during the tests: A) The deformation of the W, Mo, and WC alloys did not involve the second phase particles to any appreciable extent. Slip and fracture took place in the silver-rich matrix alone, although the fracture path generally skirted the particles by favoring the phase boundaries. The deformation proceeded according to the following sequence: 1) formation of small, discontinuous microcracks in areas of the matrix adjacent to a particle, 2) general slip in the matrix and extension of cracks, 3) failure of specimens by propagation of cracks through matrix. The near coincidence of the 3 load-deflection curves suggests that the nature of the second phase particles does not decisively influence the plastic behavior of composite alloys of this composition as long as the particles do not undergo any considerable deformation themselves. B) A markedly different behavior was exhibited by the Ag-Ni composition where the relatively low flow strength is associated with the low yield strength of the nickel grains. Slip in the nickel grains was first observed at a stress of approximately 10,000 psi, although failure, at a later stage, took place by the propagation of cracks through the matrix. The ductility of this aggregate, in which both components deform plastically, is appreciably greater than that of the elastic-plastic composites. In summary: 1) The measured values of the moduli of elasticity of the composite alloys under discussion are in good agreement with the "strength of materials" approximation proposed by Paul.' 2) The overall plastic behavior of these particle-strengthened alloys is unaffected by the nature of the second phase particles, if the latter remain elastic.
