THE purpose of this paper is to outline the pogress made in the development o the gravity separation method o ore dressing known as Sink-and-Float, which, in the opinion of the writers, has now reached a stage justifying the claim that this new method marks a highly important advance in the technique . The essential feature of the newest development of this process is the extremely accurate separation achieved. This is responsible for higher extraction in the sink-and-float unit on coarse sizes and, in consequence, for substantially higher overall recoveries. Whilst this is the most remarkable feature of the new process, it has further important contributions to make to ore dressing under the following heads: (1) The introduction of the sink-and-float separator as a buffer helps to iron-out irregularities in the mill feed. By supplying a concentrate of constant grade to the flotation section, the process also indirectly improves overall recovery. (2) The addition of a sink-and-float unit to an existing mill results in substantial increase in capacity at low per ton capital cost. (3) Where the plant can be installed underground for the pre-treatment of low-grade ores, there is a saving in hoisting costs, and excellent 'fill' is provided near the point of use. ( 4) Low-grade mixed oxide-sulphide copper ores may be pre-concentrated, thereby producing a flotation feed sufficiently rich to render the oxide residue from such flotation economic for subsequent treatment by leaching or other methods. (5) Application of the process eliminates hard gangue constituents which cause high grinding costs, or gangue constituents which adversely affect flotation. The plant is compact and easily controlled. No highly skilled operators or expensive reagents are required, and the labour and power per ton are low. The separator is extremely flexible, working equally efficiently on any throughput up to its maximum capacity.

Production and consumption of nonferrous metals in the United States during 1950 were at peak levels for the postwar period, as is shown in Tables I, II, and III. The trend of production was upward through most of the year. At the year end, with the possible exception of the Tri-State zinc-lead district, the large mining operations in the country were running at capacity. The absence of serious labor interruptions during the year was an important contributing factor in the increased out-put of metals, since in each of the previous postwar years there had been a number of major strikes which affected production adversely.

The Galena mine is located astride the Polaris fault in the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho. The surface installations are about a mile up Lake Gulch, the mouth of which is about 2.4 km (1 112 miles) west of the old town of Wallace. The mine had its beginnings when the first claims were located in the early boom days of the district in the 1880s and when the first underground ore bodies were opened up in 1917. During the ensuing 14 years, ore was mined from which were recovered 5.4 Mkg (12 million lb) of lead and almost 14.2 Mg (112 million oz) of silver. Workings consisted principally of a vertical shaft from surface to the 800 level and an offset underground shaft to the 1600 level, together with extensive lateral openings. High-grade silver-copper ore was discovered near the Silver Standard fault in the Sunshine mine, a few miles to the west, on the 1700 level in 1930. By 1937, the Sunshine and adjacent mines were producing silver-copper ore on a regular basis. In 1943 additional ore of a similar type was found along the Chester fault, to the east of the principal Sunshine workings. The interest of American Smelting and Refining Co. (renamed ASARCO in 1975) was aroused and the company's geologists determined that the Galena mine, idle since 1931, provided a geological environment in which similar ore might be found. After negotiations were initiated with the owners of the property, Callahan Zinc-Lead Co., the property in question was deeded to Callahan's wholly owned subsidiary, Vulcan Silver-Lead.

"Valuation methods are well established for mineral properties with production or imminent production, and include discounted cash flow and comparable transactions. Valuation methods for non-producing mineral properties, however, are more subjective. Non-producing mineral properties include those at various stages of exploration, properties at the prefeasibility or feasibility stage, properties with currently uneconomic mineral resources, and past-producers. Different valuation methods may be appropriate for different types of mineral properties.Income approach methods such as discounted cash flow and option pricing are generally not applicable to properties at the exploration stage. The market approach is generally appropriate to all types of mineral properties, although it is difficult to find good comparables because of the unique nature of mineral properties and the small number of transactions. Cost approach methods, such as appraised value and geoscience factor, are commonly used for exploration stage properties.Canadian standards and guidelines for valuation of mineral properties are in the process of being finalized by a Special Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIMVal Committee). The CIMVal Standards are intended to be consistent with National Instrument 43-101, which sets regulatory standards of disclosure for mineral projects, and with International Valuation Standards. The intent of the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines is that mineral property valuation be carried out by appropriately qualified individuals and that all relevant information be disclosed."

The ever increasing trend of the gold price has meant that ore deposits that were previously considered too complex, or unattractive by virtue of their low gold grade, are now being investigated more closely. These ore deposits present a greater risk of failure than previously was the case. To ensure that the risk of project failure is reduced and the maximum value is derived from the deposit, its mineralogy, as well as other characteristics, should be well understood such that the optimum process can be designed.Quite often the flow sheet design is assembled using individual process components, from various sources, and without consideration of the complete system. Test work programs require careful planning and an open viewpoint in terms of comminution circuit design particularly with respect to ever increasing power costs across the globe. As an example, high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology in many cases offers better mineral liberation than the more traditional comminution devices and it does so at a reduced energy input, and yet HPGR test work is often restricted in its scope due to the perceived novelty of the technology and the resultant lack of generally agreed and accepted test work routes.In this paper the authors outline a typical HPGR test work process route driven by the needs of different ore types and illustrate that to optimise the project value, any test work program should start from the premise that thorough understanding of the ore is vital.CITATION:Bookless, T, Meadows, D and Pownell, J, 2013. "The first in this series of two papers, on the potential of renewable electricity sources for mining operations in South Africa, investigated the internal structure of mining corporations to evaluate feasible alternative electricity sources that were identified as through earlier research. The purpose of this paper is to combine current knowledge about the external macroeconomic and the internal environments to produce a clear picture of how renewable sources of electricity could perform from the perspective of mining corporations in South Africa. The multi-attribute value theory (MAVT) approach was adapted to structure the research and results. The model was fed with real-time data provided from five different energy companies and four mining corporations operating in South Africa. The results show that the performance of hybrid versions of the currently used electricity sources (diesel generators and Eskom grid connection) with solar PV and onshore wind is favourable compared with the current sources alone. The advantage of diesel generators is significantly greater than that of the Eskom grid connection. By combining the macroeconomic influences with the MAVT results, hybrid solar PV versions are identified as having the greatest potential. In second place are hybrid wind solutions, which have the shortcoming that good wind conditions occur only in coastal regions where there are fewer mining activities. Geothermal hybrid versions are the least favourable owing to the lack of service infrastructure and high initial investment costs.IntroductionRecent developments in the macroeconomic environment necessitate an investigation of the internal structure of mining corporations to evaluate possible alternative electricitygenerating sources (Roehrl and Riahi, 2000). To be able to combine current knowledge of macroeconomic factors and the internal structure of mining corporations, the research process is presented in two papers. The first paper (Votteler and Brent, 2016) investigated the internal structure and argued that a strategic tool should be used to evaluate electricity sources from the perspective of mining corporations. The multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach was selected as the most appropriate strategic tool. Based on a literature review of previous similar MCDA approaches in energy planning, it was concluded that no adaptation of MCDA methods could be found from a corporate, mining, or South African perspective. Finally, the paper investigated the internal evaluation structure in collaboration with mining corporations, by identifying the criteria they use to evaluate electricity sources."

Mining companies are moving towards automated haul trucks and other equipment. One reason for this is that if automated trucks can operate in a standard pattern over and over again without variation, then human error is reduced, if not eliminated.The challenge for mining production leaders/managers is to ensure operators follow standard operating procedures for load and dump operations, with each operator doing the same thing, every time. However, operators are only human and inconsistent performance is rife at every mine site. The finger may be pointed at the operators for not doing as instructed. The clarity and variability of trainer instructions may be considered causal to the problem. Herein lies the problem. Almost all operators believe they are following the procedure very closely; moreover, they all demonstrate a strong desire to conform to instruction.Using video analysis and feedback, each operator can be shown where and by how much they differ from the benchmark set by their company. Operators, often for the first time, can see definitively what they are doing, compared to industry best practice.The technology utilised by real-time video (RTV) crews measures time, distance and angles. It can overlay the video of the operator at the load site, with video of the perfect pass. Operators are amazed when they see how near to, or how far they are from best practice.The footage and data gathered by RTV assists operators in understanding exactly what adjustments are required to increase proficiency. It also assists load and dump superintendents to identify where in the process they are losing time. "Interest in the fine structure of soots and carbon blacks is motivated by a variety of possible applications. The structure provides information on the origins of the particles and on their adsorptive and reactive properties. This paper describes a method for quantification of the structure of soots and carbon blacks based on direct electron microscopic observation followed by image analysis of these materials. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) provides a very detailed observation of particle structure. The differences in soot structure, because of its complexity, may not be easily quantifiable with the human eye; therefore, high-level computer software has been used to manipulate HRTEM images. This technique involves the application of fast Fourier transforms (FFT) to single particles and the measurement of characteristic parameters such as interplanar spacings and crystallite sizes from these particles. The methodology and application of this characterization technique are presented here. Results are shown for dif¬ferent samples obtained from soot and carbon black particles selected to illustrate the capabilities of the methodology. Quantitative information can be obtained on structural characteristics, e.g., interplanar spacing, circularity, orientation, elongation, and length distribution of lattice fringes, as well as on the fractional coverage of the extracted pattern. c 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.This paper presents a combination of techniques for recognizing and classifying different carbonaceous materials, using their structural morphology. A new method to assess and quantify the parameters which define such structures is proposed and discussed. The technique is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, cokes, chars, etc. possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure (Buseck and Bo-Jun, 1985; Buseck et al., 1987). The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic (Oberlin, 1989) or as crumpled sheets (Rouzaud et al., 1991) to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers, but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as on the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of the electron microscope in studying the morphology of such materials has been well-established, and abundant information is available (Ishiguro et al., 1991; Lahaye and Prado, 1978; Buseck, 1992).The use of HRTEM has brought further insight into this matter. Qualitative assessment of the structural order of such materials has been attempted over a long period of time in order to differentiate between various sources or treatments. There is, to date, no successful method available for quantifying the structural characteristics of various carbonaceous materials. This paper presents a technique which is able to recognize dif-ferent materials and to quantify the structural parameters of those materials using HRTEM and computational image analysis, including pattern recognition techniques.In the case of perfectly ordered graphitic crystals, electron diffraction is widely used for obtaining details on structure. "The availability of fresh water to meet present and future needs in Ontario is of concern to an increasing number of people. Rain and snow are the source of our potable water and provide, on the average, some 180,-000 billion gallons of water annually. This amount is reduced to 94 billion gallons a day as a result of the evaporation and transpiration of water and our inability to construct the necessary reservoirs for capturing surplus stream flow.The water used for domestic, irrigation, public supply and industrial purposes amounts to some 7 billion gallons daily at present and will reach 21 billion gallons daily by the year 2000; however, only about one-fifth of the water used is actually consumed, and this, along with the possibilities of water re-use, improves the water supply picture still further.The need for adequate pollution control has accompanied industrial and urban expansion and is an important factor in the extent to which our surplus water is used. In the 10-year period since the formation of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, the cost of water and sewage works constructed in the Province has exceeded one billion dollars. Most of the quantity of the water soluble xanthates, used in mineral flotation, is consumed in the process. However, the residue amounts are water contaminants downstream the mineral processing operations and can be toxic to aquatic biota at concentrations of 1 mg/L. In order to be able to discharge water from tailing ponds to natural water bodies the concentration of xanthates has to be decreased. The present paper studies the uptake of potassium ethyl xanthate by directly modified with copper and lead ions natural zeolitic rock, without passing through zeolite transformation into homoionic form. Modified zeolite exhibits high, comparable with powdered activated carbon of chemical purity grade, capacity to remove potassium ethyl xanthate from model wastewater, with pH in the range of 7?9 and pollutant concentration in the range of 10-150 mg/L. The pollutant immobilization is fast. Both Cu and Pb modified zeolite behave as selective with respect to xanthate in the model wastewater, and Cu-modified zeolite possesses higher selectivity. Many mine samples of coal are analyzed each year in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines. The analyses are made in connection with investigations relating to fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, the causes of accidents in coal mines, the geologic relations of coal beds, and the quality and the value of the coal and lignite in the public lands. The systematic collection and analysis of such samples in connection with fuel investigations was begun in 1904 at the Government fuel-testing plant at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. and was under the direction of the United States Geological Survey for six years. Descriptions of the coal samples collected between the beginning of this work, July 1, 1904, and the transfer of the fuel-testing and mine-accident investigations to the Bureau of Mines,July 1, 1910, were compiled and published in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 22.' Descriptions and analyses of samples collected during the fiscal years 1911 to 1913 were published in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 85.2 Descriptions and analyses of samples collected during the fiscal years 1913 to 1916 were published in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 123.3 The present bulletin presents analyses and descriptions of samples collected during the fiscal years 1916 to 1919. In order that the material in this bulletin may be used to supplement that presented in Bulletins 22, 85, and ,123, the same plan of geographical classi- fication has been followed, the analyses and descriptions of the samples being grouped in alphabetical order according to the State, county, and town near which the mines or prospects sampled are situated.

The enrichment of magnetite to haematite and haematite-goethite leads to a coincident magnetic low and gravity high within the banded iron formation. Palaeochannel deposits of pisolitic limonite can be expected to provide a relative magnetic high and gravity low in a sinuous geometry. Detrital iron deposits of conglomerate, scree or ‘canga’ might have indistinct magnetic response but will usually have a relative gravity high.These signatures provide clear discriminators detectable by a joint gravity and magnetic survey.The combination of airborne gravity gradiometry and magnetometry is particularly powerful in detecting and discriminating targets, as well as mapping lithologies and structure, across a wide variety of iron ore deposit styles. It provides detection capabilities in a platform capable of rapid, complete coverage with minimal access issues. This approach has been used in FALCON™ airborne surveys for iron ore exploration in the Great Lakes, USA; the Middleback Ranges, South Australia; and the Hamersley Basin, Western Australia.The complex magnetic properties of iron formations (particularly remanence, anisotropy and depth of weathering) prevent this approach from being simple. The use of vector residual magnetic intensity (VRMI), calculated from the measured total magnetic intensity (TMI), assists by reducing the complexity due to the different directions of the remanent and induced magnetic fields.Estimations of the density to magnetisation ratio via the pseudo-lithology calculated from the VRMI and gravity gradients provide a useful method of capturing the discriminatory power of joint magnetic and gravity gradient data.

The trend toward encouragement of worker participation in accident prevention in the coal mines of the United States is not new; however, it has been given added impetus in recent years and is now definitely progressing. It has been found by experience that, although there are many approaches to a mine-safety program that will include the workers themselves as well as their supervisors, no one way is suitable under all circumstances. It requires the concerted efforts of many agencies working along parallel lines toward a common goal. The following seven principal agencies, using somewhat different methods, are listed to illustrate how this problem is approached throughout the coal-mining industry 1. Federal Bureau of Mines. 2. State mining departments (in individual States where coal is produced). 3. Programs conducted by individual mine operators. 4. Programs conducted by mine workers' organizations (unions). 5. Institutes, societies, and other educational organizations. 6. Coal operators' associations (regional and national). 7. Universities, college, and high schools. Each of the seven approaches to safety are discussed briefly, and their methods end contributions, such as publications and other activities, are listed.

The mining and use of coal creates a significant amount of waste material that needs to be safely disposed of. It is likely that in the medium term, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. will categorize all such products as a new category – special waste. This would make the materials subject to many of the requirements for handling toxic waste, which will complicate the disposal of such products and significantly increase the disposal costs. Underground disposal would, therefore, seem to be the obvious solution, especially if the placed material can have low or no permeability, so that water table pollution does not present a serious long-term issue after placement. Significant additional advantages could be derived from this backfilling, including the reduction or elimination of surface subsidence, increased extraction, reduced surface waste disposal footprint and the elimination of explosion-proof seals in worked out areas. The research using a specific coal waste product as a typical example proved that the method of placing the backfill at a high density with low permeability is technically viable, but it must be made more cost effective and the other potential benefits quantified and costed in order to present a true comparison.

Computer-controlled microscopes with digital image acquisition and analysis led to the creation of the new field of digital microscopy. These techniques not only allow a certain degree of automation but have also brought new possibilities to microstructural characterisation. One of these new and promising possibilities is co-site microscopy, which links different kinds of information obtained from different microscopy techniques. The present work presents the development and implementation of a co-site microscopy methodology that combines images obtained by reflected light microscopy (RLM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This methodology can improve the SEM analytical capacity by adding colour information from RLM. It involves the whole sequence, from image acquisition at the microscopes to the analysis of the phases using pattern recognition techniques. An automatic registration procedure for the two kinds of images was developed, allowing the adjustment of magnification, translation, rotation and pixel size, and the correction of local distortions. Thus, the images from RLM and SEM can be combined to build a multidimensional data set of each field, which can then be used in a pattern recognition approach to discriminate different phases. The methodology was tested with a copper ore sample, aiming at the discrimination of minerals that are not distinguishable with either RLM or SEM.

Drilling mineral sand deposits has specific challenges, which are different from drilling hard rock deposits: Drilled sequences are represented by non-consolidated free-flowing sands to semi-consolidated clayey sands and indurated layers. Valuable heavy minerals (ilmenite, rutile, zircon, leucoxene) have an average density of 4.6 g/cm3, which is significantly heavier than the hosting sand matrix; mainly represented by quartz (density = 2.6 g/cm3). The large difference in the mineral densities can result in sample segregation in the drilling rods and capturing devices causing biased composition of the recovered samples. The drilled strata can contain beds of consolidated sediments, hard pan lenses and concretions. Therefore, chosen drilling equipment should be flexible and permit a switch from drilling the free-flowing sands to hard rock drilling. Thickness of the sand hosted mineralisation varies from several metres to more than 170 m. Mineralisation is distributed above and below the water table. Evaluation of the mineral sands deposits is based on hundreds of drill holes and many thousands of samples, therefore drilling methods should be fast and cost effective. The drilling methods commonly used for mineral sand deposit evaluation, include aircore, triple tube diamond and sonic; including its variants, such as vibrocore drilling technique. The ability of the studied drilling techniques to properly address the above listed challenges in mineral sand deposits, whilst maximising the quality of the obtained samples has been compared in three deposits: Corridor Sands (Mozambique), Richards Bay (Republic of South Africa) and Fort-Dauphin (Madagascar).This study has shown that aircore samples tend to be negatively grade biased, underestimating the heavy minerals content, in particular when drilled intervals are located below the water table. Triple tube diamond core method can produce non-biased samples. However, results can be marred by incorrectly chosen drilling mud. Sonic drilling is a relatively new technique based on a high frequency vibratory technology. It is the only production drilling technique that allows a continuous relatively undisturbed sample of unlithified sands to be obtained. The main limitations of this technology preventing its wider use for developing mineral sand resources are the relatively high drilling costs, in particular when the depth of drilling exceeds 100 m, and speed of drilling advance.

The question of the desirability of recovering cullet from MSW in order to recycle it into the manufacturing of glass containers remains a controversial one. The main factors appear to be: 1. The position of the Glass Container Manufacturers Institute (GCMI), as the trade association for most container manufacturers, is that post-consumer cullet is a vital source of raw material. Present requirements are for: a) Flint cullet b) Non-flint cullet of known mix proportions c) Mixed unsorted cullet of known mix propertions c) Mixed or non-flint cullet of unknown mix proportions. A market balance for these products exists, and this might somewhat limit the outlets for (b), (c) and (d), or severely limit the outlet for (d) alone. 2. The color specifications are rather strict. With cullet admixtures of 20% of the melt or more, and the use of decolorisers in a flint furnace discouraged because their action is reducing in a process which requires an oxidising environment, color contamination in a flint furnace is serious.. For amber and green furnaces (reducing) it is less serious, but in order that the quantity of decolorisers may be controlled, the color balance (as a measure of the Fe and Cr content) of the admixtured cullet should be known. 3. Why not simply color analyze, either by a continuous on-stream or off-stream: photo-electronic analysis, or by systematic batch sampling (with some kind off electronic surveillance of the mainstream) and just send mixed, color measured cullet to only amber and green furnaces? The flint would-be simply included in the mix. This is probably technically feasible, but is subject to the market limitations noted in point1.

Although the kinetics of leaching processes are of paramount importance in the design and analysis of nearly all hydrometallurgical flowsheets, these concepts remain poorly understood and, as a result, are only rarely applied to mass and heat balance models. In this second of two papers, we demonstrate how simple yet powerful models of leaching kinetics and other rate processes may be added to mass and heat balance models, and apply these concepts using a spreadsheet model of a simplified pyrite autoclaving flowsheet. In particular, we focus on the interpretation and scale-up of batch leaching data, and on simple means for modeling other phenomena commonly associated with leaching, such as reagent depletion, gas-liquid mixing, and the precipitation of oxides and basic salts.

In preparing a paper on coal washing in Colorado and New Mexico, it is difficult to refrain from entering into a discussion of the historical aspects of this subject, for the story of coal washing in these states goes back well into the last century. This phase of the subject could well make a complete paper in itself, and of necessity this present discussion must be limited to current operations. Therefore, we are taking into consideration only those washing plants which have operated for some period during the years of 1947 and 1948.

"IntroductionCrows Nest Resources Limited (CNRL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited, is nearing completion of its first coal project, located in southeastern British Columbia. CNRL shipped over 700,000 tonnes of thermal coal to foreign markets in 1982. With the completion of the metallurgical coal plant in December, 1982, shipments of both thermal and metallurgical coal will increase substantially in 1983 and will approach the anticipated operating capacity of 3.0 million tonnes in 1985. The Line Creek Mine lies some 25 kilometres north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (Fig. 1). The open-pit mine is located on top of Line Creek Ridge, with coal being hauled 16 km to the thermal and metallurgical coal preparation plants, situated adjacent to the already existing Canadian Pacific Railway. Most of the coal is moved by 108 car unit trains by CP Rail to coal ports in Vancouver, where it is loaded onto vessels destined for overseas markets. Some smaller scale car load shipments are moved by rail to contiguous markets in the Pacific Northwest. History The southeastern British Columbia area, known as the East Kootenays, is steeped in a rich coal mining heritage, dating back to the latter part of the nineteenth century. Predecessors of Crows Nest Resources Limited were instrumental in developing the rich coal reserves in the area. In 1887, William Fernie, a pioneer-cum-prospector recognized the potential of coal deposits in the East Kootenays. Spurred by the relentless push west of the Canadian Pacific Railway through the Crows Nest Pass area, Fernie recognized that it was just a matter of time before the steam locomotives provided him with his required market. That time arrived in 1897 when Fernie helped to form the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company and coal mining commenced at Coal Creek, near his namesake town of Fernie. During its almost 70-year history, this company produced over 48 million tonnes of steam coal and 8 million tonnes of coking coal. In 1965, the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company was re-named Crows Nest Industries, to better reflect its expanded interests into forest products, and it is the latter company which Shell Canada Resources Limited acquired in 1978. The extensive coal resources of Shell, in both Alberta and British Columbia, were rationalized into one group with the birth of Crows Nest Resources Limited to manage and develop the coal holdings."
