For almost 350 years, industrial rocks and minerals have been produced, used locally and exported from New Brunswick to markets throughout the world. Up until the early 1960s, commodities like grindstone, building stone, gypsum, and limestone served as the foundation of the province's non-fuel mining industry. The importance and high level of activity surrounding industrial rock and mineral development in New Brunswick is reflected in a multimillion dollar industry generating substantial revenue and providing a valuable service to its people. New Brunswick's varied geology is reflected not only by the diversity of industrial rock and mineral resources presently under development but also in several promising exploration and potential development opportunities. The province also hosts several industrial rock and mineral processing facilities, each with established technologies ensuring high-quality products and each with sufficient flexibility to supply customized products for various specialized niche markets. With the imminent availability of natural gas to parts of the province, the prospects for additional value-added processing and re-examination of known, yet presently undeveloped deposits, appear excellent. These variables coupled with the province's advantageous geographical location, highlighting tidewater access to global markets and within one day's trucking distance to a regional market of several million people, guarantee prompt delivery of high-quality products at competitive prices.

ABSTRACT The options for reducing the carbon footprint of energy use in mining fall into three categories of activity: i) reducing demand, ii) improving energy utilization, and iii) adopting low carbon energy technologies. In addition to the environmental imperative, the economic case for these activities gains higher priority as the prices of electricity, gas, and liquid fuels increase. Low-carbon, energy-saving technology options that are available to mining industry companies lead to projects with return rates that must compete alongside other capital-intensive projects considered by mining company boards. Energy projects frequently involve longer payback periods and lower rates of return than those of competing bids for capital, such as new mineral property developments. For energy services companies that specialize in the financing, construction, efficient operation, and maintenance of energy projects, the same returns and payback periods can be considered acceptable or even attractive.

Battery Electric Vehicles offer increased energy efficiency for open-pit load & haul operations at a potentially lower overall carbon cost. Electrifying a mine’s fleet, however, presents a unique set of operational challenges. In this study, we explore the effects of electrification on productivity at real operations using a Discrete Event Simulator. The model can simulate multiple shifts, a mixed fleet of diesel and electric trucks, charging and refueling stations, trolley systems, and accurate shovel-truck loading cycles. This study helps determine the trade-offs of adopting electric fleets and how they interact with the layout of today's mines.

An account is given of the application of neutron activation analysis to the rapid, non-destructive determination of copper in minerals, using a 14-MeV neutron source. Elements that interfere in the determination of copper by this method are given, together with the errors in the estimation of copper that result from the presence of varying amounts of these elements. The possible use of a compact "sealed-tube" 14-MeV neutron generator for the field assay of copper in minerals is discussed.

"The website www.economicevaluation.com.au, which had its origins at the Project Evaluation Conference 2009, provides a free way for industry professionals to teach themselves economic evaluation. At its core is a set of fast-moving modules and three worked examples.The website recognises that economic evaluation is a discipline with a hierarchy of three levels:decision-makingevaluating the project/businesshands-on modelling.There are a set of modules for each level that describe the concepts and activities in detail. These emphasise that the most important and rewarding work is the evaluation of Level 2. The economic model created in Level 3 is merely a working tool and should not become a sophisticated ‘trophy’ in Excel that only one or two people can comfortably use.Hands-on modelling contains three sets of practices designed to make any model rigorous and intuitive so that it can be easily understood and used by others in the project team. Even if the model develops into a long, detailed and complex workbook, it should remain easy to follow and be intuitive. The website advocates freedom to devise any architecture that best suits the project under study, but promotes rigour through the following practices:four cash streams and graphsthree architectures – concept, prefeasibility and feasibilitysix principles.The modules in the Level 2 evaluation use conversational language to describe in detail the broad range of activities needed to properly understand and characterise a project/business. Ok Tedi is in a period of transition. By 2008 mill feed will consist of higher levels of high-grade but metallurgically challenging skarn ores. Additionally, the Taranaki pit will start production in 2008 along with the start-up of a new pyrite concentrator. Taranaki ores are very high in sulfur. Sulfur is captured in a pyrite concentrate prior to tailing entering the Ok Tedi River. These and other complex scheduling issues will need to be resolved over a critical three-year period. With these requirements in mind, Ok Tedi contracted AMC Consultants to develop a custom version of the Life of Business Optimisation System (LOBOS¬) to assist medium-term production scheduling at Ok Tedi. LOBOS utilities enable Ok Tedi planning engineers to:import polygon-based reserve data (Blast Masters) from MineSightÆs Interactive Planning Tools (IP Tools); graphically construct block sequencing and material flow constraints; edit constraints defining standard scheduling, processing and financial relationships; define dump and stockpile attributes; and assign capacities to production systems, plants, dumps and stockpiles. LOBOS converts Ok TediÆs production scenario into a mixed integer program (MIP) and submits the resulting model to IlogÆs Cplex MIP Solver. The Solver seeks an optimal production schedule that maximises net revenue per mill hour while meeting all constraints. This paper introduces Ok Tedi and its production requirements and relates these requirements to the facilities developed for an Ok Tedi version of LOBOS.

"The Didipio Gold-Copper project in the Philippines has been a well-defined reasonably high gold grade porphyry for almost two decades. OceanaGold are now bringing the project into production in late 2012 and have recently reoptimised the project with the goal of combining the inherent high grades with higher through-put than previously proposed that will see strong initial metal production. The project was discovered and well defined by 1995, but has seen some obstacles to development, namely sovereign risk, capital cost and project funding. The project strengths over this time that have kept the flames alive are: strong grades large orebody with low stripping ratios a simple beneficiation process and a clean high-grade concentrate strong support from the Philippines government.The initial study in 1998 used Gold and Copper price assumptions of $325/oz and $0.95 lb respectively. Today reserves are based on $950 and $2.85. So, being a porphyry with a large reducing grade halo, the deposit now lends itself to extraction on a much larger scale than before, without any significant capital expenditure as a larger open pit now dominates the project.Didipio is a game changer for OceanaGold, so it has been important to learn from history and to capitalise on a strong initial metal production profile. The project sits in a reasonably remote mountainous area of Luzon which sees annual typhoons and numerous short duration high intensity rainfall events and two rivers flowing through the project area, so it has not been without some innovative technical solutions.CITATION:Redden, R, 2012. In hundreds of surface mines around the globe, Caterpillar’s flagship 793 haul trucks can be found moving material for copper, coal, gold, iron ore and other mines. Likewise, its iconic yellow bulldozers are at mine sites the world over — the company recently announced the sale of its 40,000th large dozer. And since its acquisition of Bucyrus in 2011, Caterpillar has positioned itself to become a worldwide leader in the underground mining sector as well.But don’t think that the company is resting on its reputation. As evidence of its commitment to the global mining sector, as well as its confidence in the future of mining, Caterpillar invited mining trade press, including Mining Engineering, to its Tinaja Hills Training Center near Tucson, AZ in November to introduce the latest editions to its mining portfolio. The two-day event focused mostly on the newest electric drive haul trucks, the Cat 796 AC, which will operate in the 326-t (360-st) class, and the 798 AC in the 360 t (400 st) weight class.Caterpillar representatives also spoke about new offerings in the underground space as well as the newest version of the D11 large dozer.“It has been 10 years since we launched the F Series,” Jean Savage, Caterpillar’s vice president, surface mining and technology said. “Since then, we have been on a journey to serve our mining customers and we wanted to have trucks in every application. Today, we are launching two new trucks that will allow us to fill out our portfolio.”While Caterpillar previously offered the broadest range of off-highway haul trucks to the mining industry, it was noticeably absent from the 326-t (360- st) and 360-t (400-st) weight classes."

The United States has never attained importance as a producer of asbestos, the domestic output being only 1 to 3 percent of the quantity required to supply raw material for its extensive asbestos-product manu- facturing industries. Production is centered in four principal countries-- Canada, Rhodesia, Union of South Africa, and the Soviet Union. Since asbestos first became an important commercial commodity the Province of Quebec, Canada, has led in tonnage produced, but a large proportion of the output of this province is shorter, nonspinning grades. Since 1916 the Union of South Africa and Rhodesia have become increasingly important as sources of the higher-grade spinning fibers. Before the World War Russia ranked next to Canada as a producer of asbestos, but during the revolution- ary period the industry in that country was almost at a standstill. In 1926, however, activity was revived, and each year since then production and exports have increased greatly. Minor quantities of asbestos are produced in Cyprus; Australia, Finland, and several other countries. Chrysotile is the leading product in all the producing countries, but substantial quantities of both blue (crocidolite) and brown (amosite) asbestos also are produced in the Union of South Africa. Minor quantities of anthophyllite and similar amphibole varieties are mined in the United States, Italy, Bulgaria, Finland, and several other countries.

Two electrochemical processing methodologies have been used to electrogenerate bromine-laden solutions for gold-leaching purposes. In the first process, a laboratory-scale cell in which the anode and cathode compartments were separated by a cation-exchange membrane was employed. The bromine produced by electrolysis of a 4% bromide solution was used to leach gold from a low-grade ore. The pregnant leach solution was then returned to the cell to recommence the cycle. High current efficiencies (90-93%) were maintained over six cycles. In the second process, an undivided hypochlorite generating cell (Chloropac"') was used to generate bromine from a simulated leach solution. Electrolyses were performed on a pilot-scale (100-150 gallons) with solutions containing different levels of bromide ion. The current efficiencies were also high (80-90%) and unaffected by the bromide concentration (over the range 2.5-5%) provided the electrolysis was run to low conversion « 15%). The Chloropac module was capable of delivering 0.6 kg bromine per hour at a power cost of $0.09 per kg. Using these figures, a detailed economic assessment for a 1000 metric tonnes (MT) per day gold ore processing plant was made. Electrolytic regeneration of bromine in a gold leach/recovery circuit dramatically improves the process economics over cyanidation.

This report describes Bureau of Mines research that led to the design, prototype fabrication, and successful proof-of-concept testing of an improved stench fire-warning system for underground noncoal mines. Stench systems are the most widely used means of warning driers in underground noncoal mines of fires or other emergencies. A stench system alerts miners that an emergency condition exists by injecting an odorant into the mine air. Although stench warning systems have been used successfully for over 60 yr, present systems suffer several serious shortcomings, including odorant toxicity, unreliability of warnings, widely varying stench concentrations, and others. In 1980, the Bureau began a research program to upgrade the stench warning system. The resultant system overcomes the deficiencies of existing systems by substituting tetrahydrothiophene for the commonly used ethyl mercaptan stench odorant, and through the use of a specially designed stench injector. The improved injector reliably meters stench fluid into either ventilation-air or compressed-air streams at a precisely controlled rate. Prototype hardware has been fabricated and proof-of-concept tested under bath laboratory and in-mine conditions.

"AT ANY TIME, it is a pleasure to me to be invited to address The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy because it represents an industry and men with whom I have been happily, if peripherally, associated continuously for forty years. This year, it is a particular pleasure because I believe that an important subject has arisen which I propose to discuss.This is a major discovery in the earth sciences, first fully revealed this winter, but already widely accepted. The basis of this revolution, for it is no less, is that measurements of three different features of the earth all change in exactly the same ratios. These ratios are the same in all parts of the world. The results from one set are thus being used to make precise numerical predictions about all the sets in all parts of the world. No such accurate correlations and predictions have ever been found before in geology or areal geophysics. The whole subject of earth science has thereby been radically altered.The first of these measurements is that of the direction of magnetic polarity in lava flows. When piles of young lavas are examined with the aid of a pocket compass, it is noted that some flows are magnetized in the direction of the earth's field and some in the reverse direction (Figure 1). By accurately dating enough flows, a time scale of the dates of reversals has been established. During the past four million years, nine reversals have occurred synchronously all over the world (Cox, Darymple and Doell, 1967, McDougall and Chamalaun, 1966) (Figure 2). It appears that the scale can be extended back to Precambrian times (McMahon and Strangway, 1967). This time scale is the first of the 'three identical ratios."

Introduction The intent of this paper is to present the general strategy and method of implementation to achieve a "fast-track" mine development. The major objectives of a "fast-track" or rapid development schedule are to minimize front-end development expenditures and to realize an early cash flow from operations. The Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corp. (HIMCO) is used as the working example to illustrate the development schedule. Borealis is a 2.3 kt/d (2,500 stpd) gold-silver heap leach operation near Hawthorne, NV, Pre-Feasibility Planning Proper early planning and identification of priority items were necessary to expedite project progress. On April 1, 1978, HIMCO leased the rights to the Borealis prospect and initiated exploration activities almost immediately. Since Borealis was showing excellent potential for mine development, an effort to clear the way environmentally was initiated during the summer of 1979. With the Borealis properties located within the Toiyabe National Forest, the US Forest Service (USFS) was recognized as the "lead" or respon¬sible agency for addressing the environmental issues. Early scoping of the environmental issues by both HIMCO and the USFS allowed HIMCO to take the initiative and address two potentially critical issues-archaeological and biological. Third party consultants, agreed upon by HIMCO and the USFS, were contracted to conduct archaeological and biological surveys. Desert Research Institute of Reno, NV, provided archaeological services, and JFL & Associates of Boulder, CO, provided biological services. These efforts began in the fall of 1979 and continued through the summer of 1980. Conservative Design Criteria By adoption of conservation design criteria, flowsheets and processing data required for detail engineering were firmly established with a minimum of impact on schedule. On Oct. 21, 1980, HIMCO formally initiated a feasibility study to evaluate the Borealis project. Four organizations were contracted for particular scopes of work: • John T. Boyd Co.: Ore reserve estimation, preliminary mine plan, and mine capital and operating cost estimation. • Bechtel Civil and Minerals: Conceptual engineering, processing capital and operating cost estimation. • Hazen Research Inc.: Metallurgical testing. • Sierra Pacific Power: Cost estimation for power supply. Metallurgical testing and conceptual engineering of both heap and agitation leach flowsheets were investigated concurrently. Numerous economic evaluations were conducted for both heap and agitation leaching at varying production capacities. The results indicated a heap leaching flowsheet treating 454 kt/y (500,000 stpy) yielded the best economics and was compatible with the "fast-track" development goal. Conservative design criteria was established to provide operating flexibility and ensure plant productivities. A summary of major design criteria is presented in Table 1. HIMCO assembled the results of the studies of the various consultants along with internally generated studies to produce the feasibility document. The decision to supply 100% equity by HIMCO rather than arrange project financing help to expedite the project. Cooperation Between HIMCO and Regulatory Agencies With cooperation and mutual trust established between HIMCO and regulatory agencies, the time required for environmental permitting was streamlined as much as practical. To expedite the required construction permits, HIMCO proposed to the USFS that HIMCO fund the total cost of an Environmental Assessment Report (EAR) and that issues be addressed at the technical level of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The previous studies on the critical issues of archaeology and biology provided HIMCO with the information to satisfy the proposed approach. Houston International Minerals and the USFS agreed to have Environmental Research and Technology (ERT) of Fort Collins, CO, prepare a draft EAR for the USFS.

This Bureau of Mines report is essentially a handbook, or manual, for making the type of mineral resource valuation commonly required for such public policy problems as mineral leasing. The principle of resource valuation through the capitalization of cash flow is well established. A mathematical procedure, based on a simplified accounting system, is detailed for calculating cash flow from revenue, plant costs, and operating expense. Variations of procedure cover cost depletion, percentage depletion, and depletion limited to 50 percent of net income. The influence of the depletion provisions of the tax regulations on the value of a resource to an owner and to an operator is analyzed. The relationship of royalty, bonus payments, and sales price to resource value is also described, and methods for approximating resource values using these payments as input data are developed.

Chemical modelling is becoming increasingly useful in the development, analysis, design, and control of hydrometallurgical processes. The paper presents the development of reliable databases for chemical modelling of selected hydrometallurgical systems using state-of-the-art software, such as OLI. The modelling strategies are also demonstrated. The high pressure acid leaching (HP AL) of laterites, oxygen solubility in the oxidative leaching process of zinc sulfide, gypsum solubility and lead chemistry in mixed sulfate-chloride solutions are presented as case studies. This on-going work attempts to bridge the gap between theoretical research and industry needs. "There mines are located in out of the way places, where timber is scarce and its price high, the problem of protecting it from fire risk is of considerable practical importance. Scarcity of timber for mining purposes is commonly met with in the more arid parts of the country, where, so, mine timbers are most likely to become dry, and inflammable, and where, therefore, the risk from fire is accentuated. Any effective and cheap method of securing adequate protection of such timber at the lowest possible cost is worthy of careful investigation. The use of magnesite cement has been suggested in this connection.The necessary qualities for any substance for the use suggested above may be summarized as follows: It should be resistant to abrasion, and to impact and structural stresses. It should be durable when subjected to the action of the elements, and stable to any minor derangements of the base on which it is placed. It must be relatively unaffected by changes in temperature, by the action of water, and should adhere to the material on which it is placed, and it should also be free from shrinkage cracks due to setting up the material, Magnesite cement appears to fulfill the various conditions outlined above.The elasticity of such cement is the outstanding quality which makes it desirable for exterior work. It also possesses the ability to adhere to all materials in a marked degree. Its freedom from expansion and contraction after setting is one of the principal reasons for its adhesive quality. It may be applied to old brick or stone walls, even tho they have been repeatedly covered with paint, and the quality of adhearing to wood makes it possible to secure a weather-proof protection to the wooden casings and trim of exterior openings. The quality of adhesion and elasticity is easily proved by applying a 1/2"" layer to a 1"" board which has been first covered with metal lath. Such a board, about 8 feet long, may be repeatedly deflected about 3"" in the center without breaking the bond to the board, or causing any cracks to appear in the magnesia cement. The ability to resist fire as well as the possession of insulating qualities are also desirable characteristics of magnesia cement stucco.Magnesite cement stucco should be applied in two coats, each 1/4"" thick on various surfaces such as wood lath, metal lath, sheathing board, brick, hollow tile, or stone; care being taken as regards the presence of lime, unless the same has been rendered, or become inert as with very old, walls. The first coat made up to a consistency that works easily under the trowel is applied in the usual manner. No water should be added to the liquid chloride as it would alter its density, and injure the work. The second or finishing coat is then applied. The aggregates are different in each, and no other dry material should be added to them as they come to the trade. The cement may be applied in zero weather without damage. Setting is quite slow under such conditions, but the cement ultimately becomes hard. It should always be applied to a dry surface excepting that under certain conditions it is desirable to apply a solution of magnesium chloride before using the stucco."

MORE has been said about the iron and steel situation on the Pacific Coast than has been done .about it; but perhaps as much has been done as conditions have warranted. The production of finished steel in an amount sufficient to take care of the local demand for certain sizes and shapes is an established industry on the .coast. The amount .and the variety of products, so made, changes with the demand or them which is largely dependent upon the growth in population. An increasing demand will not always increase the quantity of steel produced locally because the cost of production may rise so -high as to let in steel from the outside. The reason for this is that all of the steel made in the West comes from steel scrap, the supply of which is .limited. From the standpoint of the metallurgist, it would. be desirable to subititute pig iron for some of ' the steel scrap, but this cannot be done profitably because the pig iron now available is too expensive. In other words, the large future demand for steel and pig iron on the Pacific Coast must be supplied by reduction of ores in the West, unless we are to be content with paying high transportation costs for material produced elsewhere. ."

"INTRODUCTION The bottoming of the United Verde sulfide pipe has shortened the expected life of the United Verde mine to a matter of a few years. First located in 1876, this Arizona mine has had a long period of activity, having reached a peak production in 1929 of over 71,000 trans of copper. Through these many years of successful operation, a safety program has evolved in keeping with the proficiency developed in mining the ore body. It is the purpose of this paper to record the safety practices in effect at this mine so that others may have the benefit of lessons ,learned through experience 'and years of work toward an improved accident record.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSAcknowledgment 'is 'made to ,the Phelps Dodge Corp. for its cooperation in making available data contained in this paper, and to C. A brief history of the significant haulage truck feature changes and the factors that influenced those changes during the 60's and 70's provide a basis for forecasting the changes that can be expected in the 1980's. A review of the impact factors and changing requirements that currently exist that will create changes. Define the critical requirements of a successful haulage truck design and discuss the availability of bigger engines and better electric drive componetry to provide deeper pit capability and improve reliability. The Unit Rig Trolley Assist System to provide improved productivity and diesel fuel savings and an economic analysis to evaluate the Trolley System is covered. The Unit Rig Automatic Truck System for a driverless truck is covered in concept and discussed from the point of view of the experience in a test in a New Mexico mine. INTRODUCTION A good basis for trying to forecast what is going to happen in the future is to go back a little bit in history, to see what the influencing elements were in different periods of time as a foundation for the forecast. The importance of mine ventilation to health and safety in both coal and metalliferous mines has been long recognised. The primary and secondary ventilation systems in most metalliferous mines incur 50 per cent or more of the total mine electrical power consumption and frequently about 10 per cent of total underground mine operating costs. The requirements for ventilation-related horizontal and vertical development, fans and cooling have a significant impact on mine capital costs and also on mine schedules and start-up times and hence cash flows. There are increasing pressures on regulators and miners to reduce airborne contaminants such as diesel particulatematter, nitrogen dioxide and heat (wet bulb temperatures), and significant pressures to reducegreenhouse gases such as fugitive methane emissions from coalmines and the carbon dioxide footprint of both coal and metalliferous mines. Many previously Australian miners are now globaloperators and have extensive overseas mining operations where local ventilation standards and expertise may not be consistent with Australian practices. The role of the site ventilation officer is also changing with strict new requirements for the statutory position being introduced into Queensland metalliferous mines and the potential for this to become more widespread. Recent regulator and parliamentary review committees have identified systematic shortcomings in mine ventilation compliance, and statutory certificates in both Queensland and NSW now require continuing professional development to maintain currency. Public and investor support for mining are also increasingly contingent on safe, healthy and environmentally responsible practices and the standards for these are frequently tightening. Good ventilation design and operating practices that are consistently well executed therefore contribute significantly not only to a safe and healthy mine but also to a productive and cost-effective operation and the ongoing social licence to operate. There are a variety of ways of providing technical design and oversight into a mine’s ventilation systems; this paper explores some current trends in ventilation standards and statutory requirements, as well as ways to support and develop mine ventilation staff for both domestic and international operations and also the emerging senior technical roles of Group/Principal/Corporate mine ventilation engineer.
