The Federal Bureau of Mines participated with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Martin Marietta Aerospace in developing, building, and testing a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for use as an analyzer in mineral-resource investigative work. The prototype battery-powered spectrometer, measuring I1 by 12 by 5 inches and weighing only about 15 pounds, was designed specifically for field use. The spectrometer has two gas-proportional counters and two radioactive sources, 109Cd and 55Fe. Preliminary field and laboratory tests on rock specimens and rock pulps have demonstrated the capability of the spectrometer to detect 33 elements, to date. Characteristics of the system present some limitations, however, and further improvements are recommended.

Commodity price down cycles are a fact of life in the mining industry. And companies pre-pare for them as best they can. Evenso, operations are still curtailed or closed during those cycles, profits shrink, layoffs are inevitable and many companies do not survive. However, one of the few good things that occurs during down cycles is the new, innovative exploration, mining and processing technologies that come about during hard times. To survive the lean times, the mining industry turns to improved technology to decrease costs and hold the bottom line. And, because mining is a cyclical business, each down cycle brings about technology improvements that carry over into the good times.

Of the three chemical elements most vitally essential for plant growth the United States, before World War I, had developed ample domestic supplies of but one-phosphorus. During and shortly after the war period, the fixation of nitrogen was greatly expanded in this country, as in many others, insuring a supply adequate for agriculture as well as for munitions. However, in spite of a search for sources of the third element, potassium, which began years before the war, attained almost frantic intensity between 1914 and 1919, and continued for 10 years thereafter, it was not until 1921 that the American Trona Corporation put its Searles Lake operations into continuous production. This company in 1926 became The American Potash & Chemical Co. but has never supplied much more than 15 percent of the potash consumed in the American market. Likewise, though discovered in 1921 in drill cuttings from oil wells, it was not until 1926 that domestic deposits of potassium salts adequate to render the United States independent of foreign sources of supply were proved to occur in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico.

This volume is an annotated bibliography of published literature pertaining to the occurrence and control of surface and groundwater in underground coal mines. This literature was used to develop Volume 1 of this report, which assesses the feasibility of water diversion and overburden dewatering for underground coal mines in the Appalachian Region. Each abstract is followed by subject descriptors. the abstracts are listed alphabetically by title and are numbered consecutively. These numbers are used in the subject index to help the reader locate the appropriate articles.

THE copper industry operated at high capacity throughout 1947, with no serious tie-ups in operation as was the case in 1946, when almost the entire industry was shut down by a four-month strike. Refined copper production in the United States averaged 94,250 tons for the first eleven months and deliveries to domestic consumers, including foreign copper for domestic consumption, averaged 114,000 tons per month. On April 29 the import duty of 4d per lb was suspended until March 31, 1949. Copper prices fluctuated considerably for a short time thereafter. Over the year the price of domestic electrolytic copper at refineries on the Atlantic seaboard advanced from 19.225¢ on Jan. 2 to 21.200d on Dec. 24.

That America's great coal deposits eventually will be our principal source of liquid as well as solid fuels is generally accepted. Moreover, the day when synthetic oil from coal will begin to supplement our petroleum supplies does not appear to be far off. The American petroleum industry has not spared effort or expenditure in its attempt to keep pace with the demand for oil, and recent production has exceeded expectations. However, the rapidly rising demand for liquid fuels plus the increasing difficulty of finding and developing the new oil needed even to maintain present production rates make it highly unlikely that oil from domestic wells can fully meet future oil requirements. Therefore, it appears that one or more of the following courses must be followed: 1. Curtail oil consumption. 2. Increase imports. 3. Develop new sources such as synthetic liquid fuels.

Two commercial nickel solvent extraction plants treating laterite leach solutions and using LIX®84-I have been operated in Australia. These circuits employ similar extraction chemistry but differ in their leaching and stripping operations. An alternative process involving elements of both can be conceived. The preparation of the feed solution to solvent extraction plays an important role in nickel extraction using LIX®84-I and the special features of manganese removal and cobalt oxidation in the preparation of the PLS are discussed. This paper compares these three circuit configurations with special reference to the extraction and reductive stripping of cobalt, the transfer of zinc and copper to the strip aqueous, ammonia transfer and sulfur transfer. THIS paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in commercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordan,4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. ANALYSIS OF STERLING SILVER Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same analysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a standard alloy is during the reign of Henry II in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. "Coals are ranked according to their degree of metamorphism or progressive change in the natural series from lignite to anthracite. The reader is referred to ASTM Standard D-388, ""Standard Classification of Coals by Rank"" for a detailed description of the system in use throughout North America including Canada.Fixed carbon and calorific value (expressed in Btu/ lb) calculated to the mineral-matter-free basis have been chosen as the main characteristics from which rank is established. Higher rank coals are classified according to fixed carbon content, lower rank coals according to the calorific value on a ""moist"" mineral-matter-free basis. Certain adjacent groups are differentiated according to their agglomerating (caking) properties. ""Moist"" refers to inherent moisture. Referring to Table 1, coals having calorific values greater than 14,000 Btu/lb on a moist mineral-matter-free basis and fixed carbon of 69% or more on a dry mineral-matter-free basis are classified according to fixed carbon. Coals having calorific values of less than 14,000 Btu/lb on a moist mineralmatter-free basis are classified according to calorific value on a moist mineral-matter-free basis. Agglomerating coals having 69 to 86% fixed carbon on the dry mineral-matter-free basis are classified in the low or medium volatile group of the bituminous class according to their volatile matter content. Agglomerating coals having calorific values between 10,500 and 11,500 Btu/lb are classified in the high volatile C bituminous coal group; nonagglomerating coals in the same calorific value range are classified in the sub-bituminous A coal group."

The Cities Service Company's Pinto Valley mine and concentrator lie about 6 miles west of the town of Miami, Arizona at an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet above sea level. The concentrator started its first ballmill in July 74 and all six were available by November. Every effort was made to reduce capital costs, consequently, each unit process was studied critically to eliminate excess capital costs without loss of efficiency. Equipment selection was made on the basis of proven dependability and operating costs rather than on low bids. The result is a very workable plant with some important innovations. The concentrator is nominally 40,000 tons per day. The flowsheet is typical with 3 stage crushing, single stage closed circuit grinding, flotation, regrinding of rougher concentrate and cleaning of the rougher concentrate. A modified push-pull field test and a computer model of cation exchange were developed to aid in evaluating cation exchange parameters prior to in situ mining. Reliable determination of these parameters is essential when modeling restoration of groundwater quality. The field test involves a much larger volume and much less disturbance to the ore sample than is feasible with laboratory measurements. This test can be performed in two or three weeks. It is relatively inexpensive, requiring one injection- production well and two or more wells for collecting samples of leach solution. The use of the model in interpreting test results is illustrated with field data from an in situ uranium mine. Much of the research was performed by the University of Texas at Austin, and was partially funded by the Bureau of Mines.

COAL'S importance in the metallurgy of zinc may be gauged by the fact that approximately a million and a half tons is so employed annually in the United States. This brief paper will show in what way the various steps in the treatment of zinc ores utilize this fuel, either in its primary form or as coke or gas, and to what extent. The first step in zinc metallurgy that requires the use of fuel is roasting the sulphide ore, which is the type of ore in which zinc commonly occurs. Since the roasting is nearly or completely autogenous, however, this use of fuel is too minor to warrant further attention. Concentration of zinc ores is usually carried out by conventional milling methods, but a pyrometallurgical method, the Waelz process, is used to concentrate certain low-grade ores, and to recover the zinc content of certain residues in concentrate form. This section of Minerals and Materials analyzes the following three factors affecting the recent performance of the U.S. and world mineral industries: 1) the health of the U.S. and world economies, 2) the level of interest rates and 3) the performance of productivity in both the U.S. mineral industry and the general economy. While these indicators do not exhaust the possible critical factors, they represent an initial attempt to probe some of the considerations underlying the performance of the U.S. minerals and materials industry. The U.S. and World Economies It is essential to analyze the state of the U.S. and world economy because the demand for minerals and materials is a derived demand; that is, since minerals and materials are used in the productive process, the demand for them is a direct function of the demand for the finished products of which they are a basic input. Thus, the demand for minerals and materials is directly affected by changes in present and planned consumption and investment expenditures. The past two issues of this publication have highlighted the generally discouraging performance of the national and inter-national economies. Briefly, the world economy is in the third year of the first long recession in recent history where inflation rates have remained above 5 percent. With many countries either unable or unwilling to support domestic spending while inflation continues, there has been a growing tendency to institute trade-restrictive policies to support domestic demand. The resulting weakened demand conditions in exporting nations have had a direct effect on the mineral industry.

The United States Bureau of Mines contracted Norecol to prepare a report identifying the regulatory processes associated with metal mine development in British Columbia using the Snip Mine as a case study. The intent of this study is to assist industry and regulatory agencies in developing understanding as to differences in objectives, perspectives and operating methods. The case study will be incorporated into a larger report summarizing the comparative advantages and disadvantages of metal mine permitting in British Columbia and Alaska. The purpose of the report is to identify the development schedule and permitting process at Snip which will assist the U.S. Bureau of Mines in suggesting improvements in environmental review and permitting processes for mine developments. The report provides an abstract of the environmental assessment review processes in Canada and the Mine Development Review Process in British Columbia and provides an understanding of the linkages between policy, legislation, and environmental review.

MINING geology does not lend itself - very readily to a review embracing "improvements in methods," as perhaps do shop practices or laboratory procedures. The "methods" used in mining geology are simply the application of geology to mining; winning the ore, the handling of material, mechanical appliances, all belong strictly to mining proper, and have no place in a review of geology as applied to mining. A comprehensive review would necessarily cover a .very broad field, which could be subdivided into many -parts.
