China is the largest coal-producing country in the world, while the geological conditions of deep coal mining are extremely complicated with high ground stress, high gas pressure and low permeability, which results in the difficulty of gas drainage and aggravation of gas explosion and coal and gas outburst disasters. Co-extraction of coal and gas is an effective method to eliminate coalmine gas disasters and realise the safe exploitation of coal and efficient gas drainage at the same time. This concept is widely accepted by the main coal-producing countries around the world, while the concrete definition of co-extraction is vague and not unified, and there is little accurate theoretical support for co-extraction of coal and gas, which makes it hard to determine efficient gas drainage methods correspondingly according to the features of coal seams in a comprehensive and systematic way. Based on theoretical analysis, laboratory test and field observations, basic thoughts and specific definition of co-extraction of coal and gas were put forward after analysing the occurrence characteristics of coal seams in China. We obtained the mechanism of mining-enhanced permeability and established the corresponding theoretical model, which is the process of fracture network formation through opening recovery of the original fractures and new fractures produced by unloading damage. Based on the core idea of ‘mining-enhanced permeability’, engineering approaches of ‘unloading by boreholes drilling’ for the single coal seam and ‘unloading by protective seam mining’ for the coal seam group were proposed to realise safe and efficient co-extraction of coal and gas. Meanwhile, combined with engineering practice, we put forward the construction principle of coal exploitation and gas drainage system in different coal seam occurrence conditions. "Photogrammetry, as a tool for monitoring underground mine deformation, is an alternative to traditional point measurement devices, and may be capable of accurate measurements in situations where technologies such as laser scanning are unsuited, undesired or cost-prohibitive. An underground limestone mine in Ohio is used as a test case for monitoring of structurally unstable pillars. Seven pillars were photographed during four visits over a 63- day period. Using photogrammetry, point clouds of the mine geometry were obtained and triangulated surfaces were generated to determine volumes of change over time. Pillar spalling in the range of 0.29–4.03 m3 of rock on individual rib faces was detected. Isolated incidents of rock expansion prior to failure, and the isolated failure of a weak shale band, were also observed. Much of the pillars remained unchanged during the monitoring period, which is indicative of proper alignment in the triangulated surfaces. The photographs of some ribs were of either too poor quality or had insufficient overlap, and were not included. However, photogrammetry was successfully applied to multiple ribs in quantifying the pillar geometry change over time.IntroductionAdequately measuring underground rock mass movements is integral to understanding how rock masses behave and how to interact with them safely and efficiently. Many modern measurement techniques employed in underground mining environments rely on point measurements, such as through extensometers or borehole relief methods (Christiansson, 2006). These techniques, while commonplace, do not provide a comprehensive view of how the rock mass is behaving. The dynamic changes in stress states underground, coupled with the mechanical uncertainty of rock masses, near active excavations, creates a need for measurement systems which better capture the behavior of the rock mass. Photogrammetry is a technology capable of producing the wide-area displacement measurements required for a comprehensive understanding of rock mass movements.Digital photogrammetry is a means of obtaining threedimensional point clouds from digital photographs. By finding the same point across multiple images, all viewing an object from different angles, the location of that point in three-dimensional space can be inferred. Close range digital photogrammetry (CRDP) is photogrammetry applied to measuring objects or scenes less than 100 meters away (Atkinson, 1996), and is used for various functions in underground mining environments. These uses include, but are not limited to, mapping fracture networks (Kim, Kim, & Won, 2005)(Somervuori & Lamberg, 2010), characterizing fractures (Styles et al., 2010) and measuring volumes of blast rock (Heal, Hudyma, & Potvin, 2004)."

In view of the shortage of soft water all over the Middle East countries, seawater may be used to replace the fresh water in flotation beneficiation. The flotation process required about 7 m3 of fresh water/ ton ore. This article aimed to study the effect of seawater cations and anions on the flotation process of four important mineral commodities. The adsorption of collector, zeta-potential, zero point of charge and floatability of pure minerals were studied. The individual effects of different cations and anions that are predominant in seawater, within their more or less actual concentrations were studied on individual mineral and on groups of them. The troublesome Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions, in the anionic circuit could be controlled by soda ash addition to the pulp before the anionic collector. The addition of sodium silicate improved the floatation selectivity of mineral mixtures and natural ore. At the optimum conditions the calcareous phosphate ore yielded a concentrate recovery of 83% with a grade of 34% P2O5, with 0.61%MgO, which from an ore assaying (25.3% P2O5 and 9.4% MgO).

During the investigation or the occurrence of manganese deposits in western United States, Bureau of Mines' examining engineers collected samples from four manganese properties in the Death Valley region, California. These were supplemented by samples submitted by owners of two other properties in the same area. Extensive laboratory tests were made to determine the, amenability of the ores to standard ore-dressing concentration methods. A small sample of high-grade oxide manganese ore from the McWhinney property, San Bernardino County, Calif., was submitted by the owner. Although the sample would sinter directly to plus 48 percent manganese grade, it appeared probable that the ore, if mined in quantity, would be lower in grade and would require beneficiation. Therefore, testing was conducted to remove the chief gangue constituent, calcite. The National Resources, Inc., property (also known as the old Owl Hole mine) is in the Owl Hole Springs district, I mile from Owl Hole Springs, San Bernardino County, Calif., near the southwest corner of Death Valley National Monument. The ore deposits occur as small lenses or ,pockets, evidently .replacements in limestone and granite. Laboratory work was done on a representative sample of orb procured by Bureau engineers.

As one begins to contemplate the organization of a talk with the title "Iron Ore - The Permanent State of Evolution," the main divisions appear to be the past, the present, and the future. But distaste for repetition of the present production achievements, which scarcely need additional description on this occasion, soon leads one to the conclusion that a more appropriate division of the subject is simply the past and the future . . . with emphasis on the future. We are working in the present, but it can only be understood by what has taken place in the years and decades gone by, and/or under what terms we will have to face the future. Evolution is more often thought of as a steady change - but steady change is really the product of revolutions, sometimes making headlines but often unnoticed at the time. With hindsight, we recognize the great importance of the emergence of the Bessemer converter and the open hearth and the vast influence that both have had on steel making and the changing ore demand. In this country we also see schooners opening the era for lake transportation of iron ore from Michigan to Take Erie. Later, steamships haul the ore from the Mesabi Range to the steel centers of the country. In order to take full advantage of the inland seaway, there had to be revolutions in ship design, loading and unloading facilities and channel and lock development. Full scale utilization of the resources of the Mesabi Range, itself, required parallel upheavals such as the development of new production equipment, and substitution of modern forms of energy for horsepower, and, yes, manpower, as well.

Preparedness is an important element of any underground mine's strategic plan in dealing with an unexpected event, such as a fire. A fully implemented fire preparedness and response plan is essential in reducing the probability and seriousness of a mine fire. This report describes the development of an underground coal mine fire preparedness and response checklist (MFPRC). The checklist is a data collection instrument for profiling both the fire prevention and response capabilities of a mine site and usually requires 3 to 4 days to complete. The checklist encompasses conditions, procedures, and equipment that have frequently been identified as the primary or contributing causes of underground coal mine fires. At least 1 day is needed underground to evaluate the water system. This entails measurements of water flows and pressures at fire hydrants, and water throw distances of fire hose and nozzles at several locations (mains and branch lines). A few of the other topics that are discussed with mine personnel include detection and suppression systems, combustible materials, mine rescue and fire brigades, and firefighting equipment. The MFPRC was developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH),Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Cyprus Amax, Twenty mile Coal Co. (Oak Creek, CO), the checklist was field tested and further refined. Additional field tests were conducted at several other operating coal mines.

This paper details Keeler/ Dorr-Oliver's experience with the application of fluid bed combustion technology to the burning of coal-mining waste. The designs of two stage fluid bed combustors/dryers are demonstrated as useful in the drying of coal, slag and coke, using coal and coal refuse (gob) as fuel. Anthracite mining refuse (culm) is more than abundant in Northeastern Pennsylvania. After demonstration at Shamokin, Pennsylvania, a full commercial-sized fluid bed boiler using culm is used for district heating in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Limited research work has shown the utility of using fine coal as filter aid in sludge in¬cineration. With the rising avenues of the suitability of coal as auxiliary fuel in fluid bed sludge incineration, an expansion of these concepts combines the use of coal or coal refuse as filter aid and auxiliary fuel. Mining in the Tri-State district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma has been nearly continuous from about 1848 until the present day, although the major activity was from about 1880 to 1955. The district, which has produced over $2 billion in zinc and lead concentrates, ranks as one of the greatest mining districts in the world. Unlike other Mississippi Valleytype deposits in the United States, which occur in Cambrian and Ordovician limestones and dolomites, the Tri-State district ores occur in Mississippian limestones containing abundant chert. Zinc is 5 to 6 times more abundant than lead. In the Picher Field, the principal sub-district which has accounted for 61 percent of the total district production, most of the ore has been mined from the single horizon, M bed. Most ore bodies, other than those of the "Sheet Ground" or blanket-type, are in large, essentially flat-lying breccia zones and have a definite mineral zonal pattern. An irregular, generally elongated central dolomitic core is surrounded progressively outward by the main ore run, the jasperoid zone, the muddy or shaly and bouldery zone, the sparry calcite limestone zone, and the fossiliferous, dominantly crinoidal, limestone zone. Some of the zones may be absent or nearly so and may overlap to some extent with an adjacent zone. Although the district has been studied by many authors, much controversy still exists about such items as genesis, paragenesis, and time of emplacement. These subjects are discussed in the paper.

Passive methods of treating mine water use chemical and biological processes that decrease metal concentrations and neutralize acidity. Compared with conventional chemical treatment, passive methods generally require more land area, but use less costly reagents and require less operational attention and maintenance. Currently, three types of passive technologies exist: aerobic wetlands, organic substrate wetlands, and anoxic limestone drains. Aerobic wetlands promote mixed oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and are most effective when the raw mine water is net alkaline. Organic substrate wetlands promote anaerobic bacterial activity that results in the precipitation of metal sulfides and the generation of bicarbonate alkalinity. Anoxic limestone drains generate bicarbonate alkalinity and can be useful for the pretreatment of mine water before it flows into a wetland. Rates of metal and acidity removal for passive systems have been developed empirically by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Aerobic wetlands remove Fe and Mn from alkaline water at rates of 10-20 and 0.5- 1.0 g. m-2? d-1, respectively. Wetlands with a composted organic substrate remove acidity from mine water at rates of 3-9 g. m-2? d-1?. A model for the design and sizing of passive treatment systems is presented in this report.

High production rate and good stability demand the optimization of all phases of electric pig iron smelting. This is important with respect to slag chemistry, which to a large extent regulates the process temperature in electric smelting. Controlled basicity and slag volume. and a satisfactory screen analysis of the reduction material and sinter, are of the utmost importance for smooth furnace operation. Large variations in slag volume and in B/ A and C/Fe ratio will have an influence on the furnace resistance and thus the specific energy development in the furnace, which lead to variable reduction of SiO.. The result will be variable hot -metal quality and un-stable furnace operation.

Oceana Gold (New Zealand) Limited operates the Macraes Gold Mine near Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand. The orebody is mineralogically complex and comparatively low grade requiring a series of unit processes and resulting in a relatively complex plant. As part of Oceana GoldÆs ongoing Business Improvement program, a concerted effort has been made to focus on operational efficiency. One aspect of this has been the efficient use of energy in the gold recovery process. A benchmarking process has been developed for the Macraes operation that includes comparison with other operating mines and theoretical design. Criteria for determining operational efficiency have been developed. While benchmarking is, in theory, a simple process, this paper looks at putting benchmarking into practice by catering for variability in ore and associate processing methods. The unit processes discussed include the comminution circuit, flotation plant, pressure oxidation plant and gold recovery circuits.

Distinct trends in grinding mill technology have emerged in recent years. In an effort to optimize overall mill performance for the needs of the End User, broad measures of logistical speed, process flexibility, operational risk, and overall costs now exert greater influence on the specification of grinding equipment. As a result, innovative alternatives to conventional grinding mill structures, supports, drives, feed, and discharge configurations are now being offered and selected with greater frequency. This paper investigates these trends in grinding mill technology, utilizing optimization and decision-theory techniques. In particular, the paper considers how specific advances in process design, product engineering, manufacturing techniques, and mining operations continue to relax technological constraints, enabling further mill innovation. In this context, a methodology is presented, illustrating how proper selection and specification of grinding mill components and configuration can target an optimization of the four End-User performance measures listed above..

Canada has played a significant role in the international uranium industry for some three decades. Although there have been many challenges in the past, the future offers a more extensive range of problems and prospects as Canada moves to expand its activities in all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle. World uranium demand could grow to an annual requirement of 500,000 tons U308 by the year 2000. A substantial fraction of this material is likely to come from Canada because the country's reserves and resources are large, and because of a favourable geological potential for future discoveries. There has been a long history of association between the producing industry and the federal government, and it has provided the foundation for existing national uranium policies. Close industry-government association will be maintained and developed in future because of the anticipated rapid growth of the industry and the consequent need for continual refinement of government policies relating to exploration, mining, processing and export of uranium.

The process for which it is to be used is too often the only consideration in the design of a vessel. A de-sign allowing for practical manufacture and erection, as well as for proper maintenance, can often give over-all economies. Most platework in-stalled today is of welded construction. Therefore, metallurgical control is important in its manufacture. Also, because many concentrating and re-fining processes tend to be corrosive, the subject of protective coatings as a part of the manufacturing process is extremely important. The plant de-signer should know how to evaluate and specify controls for the metallurgy and for the coatings. Mining operations are becoming more sophisticated in the field of mechanical engineering. More and more emphasis is being given to preventive maintenance. The first step in any maintenance program, however, is good inspection service. This paper will suggest methods for the inspection of platework, and outline methods for repair and replacement.

This paper will discuss the background information about rock cutting tools used for soft ground excavation, their history and evolution. A brief review of the current state of the art manufacturing technology will be presented and some parameters related to the material used in the drag and conical type pick cutters and their impact on their life and performance will be explained In addition, the selection procedures for choosing the right bit for excavation of a particular geological formation will be reviewed A set of guidelines will be provided for initial selection of the tools for various machines and rock formations. The methods for estimation of the tool life in various materials and the influencing parameters along with limitations of the rock cutting tools will be discussed as well.

UehlinG, New York City (communication to the Secretary*):—Mr. Baker's paper is one that brings up a subject of great importance, and if full statistics could be collectecl of the number of furnace-linings ruined by reason of bad distribution by skip-hoists, it would be found an astonishing array. Unfortunately a universal remedy has not yet been found. The fact that Mr. Baker has apparently succeeded in overcoming the trouble at Sydney, is no guarantee that the same remedy applied at another plant, where very different or even slightly different conditions prevail, mould cure the trouble. That it requires but a slight continuous difference of penetrability in the column of the descending stock of one section, over another, to produce channeling, is clearly demonstrated by Mr. Baker's experiments, by which he reversed the channeling from front to rear instead of remedying the trouble. Every change in the physical make-up of the charge necessarily requires a specific adjustment; even supposing this feasible, the regular working of the furnace is by no means assured, because with the high pressures now customary, the tendency of the ascending gases to plow their way through in a direct course, prevails, and having once opened up a passage, they will persist and cause trouble. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a test procedure to compare the initiating strength of detonators by using adjustable-sensitivity liquid explosives. Various tests of detonator strength are currently used by the industry, but many of them do not quantify the ability of detonators to initiate detonation reactions in an explosive charge. The USBM used mixtures of nitromethane and ethylene diamine, the sensitivity being "fine-tuned" by 2-nitropropane. Military standard J-2, commercial No.6, and commercial No.8 detonators were evaluated using three test configurations: (1) axially immersed in the test explosive, (2) tip just touching surface of the explosive, and (3) immersed transversely in the explosive. Markedly different results were obtained for these three configurations, indicating that the directional effects are important. This explains why different detonator strength tests do not correlate well with each other. Some tests, such as the sand bomb and underwater, measure the total energy out-put, while other tests, such as the plate dent, test measure the energy in the axial direction. The USBM's test data indicate the importance of conducting the experimentation in the manner in which the detonator is actually intended to function.

THE annual dinner-dance was held in the large ball room of the Commodore hotel Wednesday evening. A total of 577 were seated at the dinner, over which President Eavenson presided as chairman and toastmaster. In introducing George C. Stone, the James Douglas Medalist, W. R. Ingalls outlined the former's association with the zinc industry. He said, in part In designing and building Palmerton, Stone erected a metallurgical monument and won the title of chief engineer of the New Jersey Zinc Co., with transferal to its New York office in 1900. There lie held forth in dignity, efficiency, and with appreciation until his retirement from active service in 1929. After a few years lie was diverted from the position of chief engineer for his company to the superior one of chief metallurgist and that gave to Stone his next big chance.... This was the conception of a research department and the ability to persuade his directors to adopt it. I shall not pretend to summarize the great things that afterward developed. I shall mention only the institution of the manufacture of lithopone in this country, the charging of the Wetherill furnace with briquets, the mechanicalization of the Wetherills, the accomplishment of continuous distilling, and most recently the introduction of reflux-refining.

Studies were carried out to examine the effect of introducing varying levels of a pisolitic limonite (Yandi) into an Australian iron ore blend. Compared with other ores in the blend Yandi is more porous. This structure is found to have a considerable effect on the sintering behaviour of the blends. Pilot-scale sintering studies and plant trials showed that sinter plant productivity, sinter reducibility and the low-temperature reduction degradation index altered significantly when the level of Yandi in the ore blend exceeded 15 wt%. The improvement in the reducibility is thought to be a direct result of increased porosity in the sinter and the presence of highly reducible pseudo-relict haematite. Plant trials have also shown that operational changes could be made to the sinter plant to avoid potential deterioration of productivity

With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the very fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive but it leads to greater losses in 'slimes'. In the early 1970's, 50% of the tin mined in Bolivia, 30% of the phosphate mined in Florida and 20% of the world's tungsten were lost in this way (Somasundaran, 1979). Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25-50µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Two approaches can be adopted to try to overcome this problem. The first involves increasing the efficiency of existing equipment or developing new slimes treatment processes. Gravity devices such as the Bartles-Mozley concentrator have been developed for this purpose and good recovery has been reported from 100µm down to 5µm. Such machines, however, have relatively low throughputs, so that large areas of plant space are generally required. Flotation is rapidly growing in importance for the treatment of ultra-fine minerals traditionally treated by gravity concentration.
