The year 1987 marked the centennial of the beginning of modern hydrometallurgy. On October 19, 1887 British Patent No. 14174 entitled Process of Obtaining Gold and Silver from Ores was issued*. The discovery was made by John Steward MacArthur (Fig. 1), a chemist-metallurgist, supported and assisted by Robert and William Forrest, two brothers practicing medicine in Glasgow. The discovery was made in the basement of their clinic. The process, which became known as the cyanidation process in reference to the alkali cyanide reagent used, immediately received industrial success in New Zealand in 1889 and in South Africa in 1890t. It displaced the chlorination method which had been in use. In 1903 MacArthur was awarded the first Medal of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in London1131 - The cyanidation process was responsible for the doubling of gold production in the world in the two decades which followed its first application (Fig. 2). To the modern metallurgist, it may be surprising to think of MacArthur coming across an obscure reagent such as an alkali cyanide as a leaching agent for gold ores. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the background and the factors that led to this invention, the development of the understanding of the process, and the application of modern technology.

The sampling time, the costs and its quality are the three factors that determine the best method of drilling in mineral exploration. The two principal methods of reverse circulation (RC) and diamond core drilling are often used in combination by mine operators. RC is used for drilling shallow holes and in-pit grade control, and core drilling for deeper holes to identify future resources. The RC method is faster and more flexible than coring and provides virtually uncontaminated cuttings (ranges from dust to 25 mm chips) to the surface cyclone suitable for geochemical anomalies. The diamond coring produces core samples to increase the level of geological knowledge and the 3D extension and distribution of the orebody. However, both of these methods are subjected to certain limitations and inefficiencies in reaching deeper depths and drilling complex hole geometries. Examples of such shortcomings include the inability to provide enough air pressure for RC drilling and high friction between drill pipe and the hole wall in diamond core drilling.Considering that delivering large volume of reliable samples from deep zones to the surface in shortest possible time is of paramount importance in mineral exploration, and assuming that obtaining core samples over whole overburden is not always essential, then drilling small size holes as fast as possible and delivering the small chip samples to the surface would be a good alternative with several advantages over conventional drilling methods for deep hard rocks mineral exploration. As a result, the use of coiled tube (CT) drilling technology has been proposed recently for such applications. CT is a continuous length of ductile steel or composite tube stored and transported on a large reel; and allows fast drilling by eliminating the connection time and providing continuous circulation during drilling. This enables quick access to the zone of interest to collect the cuttings or obtain core samples. CT is advantageous particularly in drilling directional boreholes and multi-laterals. In this paper, feasibility of using CT delivering reliable samples is discussed for deep mineral exploration. In addition, recent developments and practices are presented that make CT a reliable drilling technology to drill cheaper, faster and deeper and to deliver more continuous and reliable data and samples from deep formations.CITATION:Mokaramian, A, Rasouli, V and Cavanough, G, 2012. "We present detailed comparisons between theoretical predictions and experiments for the initiation of radial hydraulic fractures transverse to a wellbore. Most of these experiments provide a measure of the time evolution of pressure, length, opening and flux entering the fracture during the test. We compare all these measurements simultaneously to our theoretical predictions, thoroughly testing hydraulic fracture initiation theory, which is shown to be predictive. These comparisons notably emphasize the difference between the initiation pressure (the wellbore pressure for which the fracture initiates) and the breakdown pressure (a misnomer which simply corresponds to the maximum pressure recorded during the test). INTRODUCTION In this paper, we will compare hydraulic fracturing laboratory experiments performed in different tight materials (PMMA, cement, shale) with the predictions from a numerical solution of the governing equations of hydraulic fracture mechanics (e.g. Geerstma & de Klerk, 1969; Detournay & Peirce, 2014). We focus on transverse radial hydraulic fractures initiating from a radial notch at the wellbore wall (see Figure 1). In particular, we will clarify the difference between the initiation pressure (the wellbore pressure at which the fracture initiates) and the breakdown pressure (a misnomer which simply corresponds to the maximum pressure recorded during a test, usually carried out at constant pump rate). This difference stems from the strong viscous effects at play during wellbore pressurization, fracture initiation and early propagation (i.e. fluid entrance in the newly created fracture). It has been observed on a number of experiments (e.g. Weijers, 1995; Zhao et al., 1996) and has a strong practical application, first because the maximum pressure is the most obvious value to report and second because that maximum value is necessary to specify injection systems."

Improvements achieved in terms of energy usage and plant productivity are detailed.

MIM Holdings Limited has acquired a reputation for the successful application of R&D to develop break-through technologies for the mining industry. The Isa Process tank-house technology has been licensed to copper refineries throughout the world, and almost 40 per cent of the worldÆs copper is refined using this technology. Isasmelt copper and lead smelting technology is either in use, or is currently being installed, by eight companies in eight countries around the world. Jameson Cell technology is widely used in the coal mining industry and increasingly in the base-metal industry. The IsaMills developed at Mount Isa and McArthur River made it possible to develop the McArthur River and George Fisher orebodies. This paper will address the need for innovation and then discuss the development of the IsaMill and Isasmelt technologies. It will conclude with some comments about why MIM has been so successful in developing such technologies.

The Yara Siilinjärvi plant is located in the central part of Finland. Siilinjärvi is Western Europe's only apatite mine and annually it produces 1 Mt of apatite concentrate, which creates approximately 10 Mt of tailings.At the beginning of 2017, tailings handling in Yara Siilinjärvi was brought to a new era, by replacing the conventional tailings storage facility with a new tailings treatment plant. The new high-density tailings disposal system with two paste thickeners increased the percentage of solids in the slurry from 45–48 per cent to 66-68 per cent, making it possible to deposit as a paste. This extended the life-span of the current tailings storage facility by 15 years; from 2020 to 2035.This paper presents the storyline of the Yara Paste Plant Project. The project began with laboratory testing and then progressed to pilot-scale thickening and beaching trials. After some successful pilot trials, the final process design was implemented. Process instrumentation and automation played a key role in the project, as the aim of the Yara Project was to make the plant operable remotely from the main plant. An advanced control system is needed to maintain process stability and the desired operation point in various operational circumstances.This paper discusses the results from the Yara site since the new tailings treatment plant commenced. Some of the main points are that the operation has been running consistently with an underflow solids content of 66-68 per cent, with average beach slope angles of 3.5 degrees in the tailings disposal area. This control system additionally facilitates minimum use of flocculant, which delivers significant savings to operating costs. Robust thickener operation also leads to the trouble-free high-density pumping and high availability of the Paste Plant. During the first year of operation, the plant’s availability has been very good, over 97 per cent.Currently, the plant still has its own staff working there during the daytime, but the Paste Plant is now already operated remotely during the night shifts. This is one of a series of papers dealing with mining methods, practice, and costs be¬ing published by the United States Bureau of Mires. In this paper a description of the mining practice in vogue at the Braden unit of the Kennecott Copper Corporation is undertaken. PRODUCTION At present (1931) the entire production of ore is being obtained from the Teniente mine. The miring method in use is an adaptation of block undercutting which has been a development of the stoping and pillar caving experience obtained at this property. Improvements in mining practice are constantly being made.

Among the procedures developed by the Germans for providing the tonnage of iron powder needed to make rotating bands for artillery shells is the use of a ceramic tunnel kiln, not only for finishing the reduction of centrifugal powders but also for making so-called "brickyard sponge iron," which, after crushing and grinding, seems to yield a product suitable for powder-metallur- gical purposes. The final report issued jointly by the German Powder-Metallurgical Society (DPG) and the Chemical-Metallurgical Branch of the Research Depart- ment of the Metallgesellschaft, Inc. (ZFC of MG) gives the available details of this procedure, which may be regarded as a further development of the process in commercial use since 1911 at a ceramic plant in Hoeganaes, Sweden. The Bureau of Mines' wartime development of the Hoeganaes process also cul- minated in the adaptation of ceramic tunnel kilns for carrying out the solid- carbon reduction of iron ores, and comparison with the German technique should further advance the art. This information circular is issued as a supplement to Bureau of Mines reports of investigations Nos. 3819,2 3822, 3841,2 and 4271, on brick- yard sponge iron and is based on four German reports entitled "Making Iron. Powder in the Tunnel Kiln," translated from FIAT microfilm reel H-46, frames 9190-9209, 9280-9299, 9339-9357, and 9377-9384 (PB L 70042), which represent the four original research reports, Nos. 2005, 2008, 2010, and 2012, respec- tively, of the Metallgesellschaft, Inc.

Flaubert, as we know, laid stress on the selection of the right word, le mot juste, the precise epithet, the word that belongs to the thing. A sentence, or even a paragraph, may be spoiled by the use of a word that is not proper, that does not fit or is foreign to the meaning intended. An Australian mining expert is reported to have said: You have a property of considerable value, and what I saw warrants a good development of very rich cubicular galena, with gossan intermixed. 'Cubicular' means `belonging to a small bedroom', a `cubicle' being a sleeping compartment. He meant `cubic', of course. This is a malapropism, and reminds me of the lady from Chicago that, on her return from Europe, said how much she had enjoyed the rural parts of France, because, among other things, it was "so delightful to hear the French pheasants singing the mayonnaise to the tune of the Los Angelus". It is impossible to amalgamate coal-tar thoroughly with the pulp in the agitating-tank. In metallurgy, `amalgamate' refers to the combination of mercury with one or both of the precious metals, forming an amalgam, which is an alloy of mercury with another metal. It differs from other alloys, such as brass or bronze, in being made without the aid of heat, inasmuch as mercury is molten at the ordinary temperature. The word comes to us from the Greek. through Old French and means `something soft'. It is a mistake to use technical terms, having a specific meaning, for purposes that are foreign to that meaning. "The wide publicity that is given to the discover; of new oil fields has led many people to believe that our supply of crude petroleum is practically in- exhaustible and that in order to keep pace with the demand for petroleum products, it is only necessary to drill a few more wells in some of the south-western states. It is not generally realized that, although many famous fields have been developed in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and Louisiana during the past few years, the production of crude oil in 1919 was not sufficient to meet the demand and it was necessary to import approximately 53,000,000 barrels from Mexico.Continued efforts are being made to recover a larger percentage of the oil underground by improvements in methods of drilling and in handling producing properties. Improvements are also being made in methods for handling the oil after it has reached the surface which will result in reducing losses through leakage and through evaporation. These methods for cutting down waste in production and storage, if universally adopted, will no doubt result in appreciable increases in our supply of crude oil."

The automation (robotization) of coal mining activities at the face offers improvements in worker safety and productivity. The evolutionary introduction of autonomous, intelligent robotic machines to perform the most hazardous tasks may become a reality within the next 10 years. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Robotics and Automation research program is aggressively pursuing the development of the enabling technology necessary to achieve this goal. This program consists of both core and applications research, each focused on the fundamental issues of robotic technology. In the short term, the research is directed specifically to the robotization of present-day underground equipment and is being performed in a manner that can make incremental improvements in safety and productivity. The long-term goal is the development of intelligent autonomous mining systems.

"Inductive plasmas are now commonly used in material processing: spraying, powder synthesis, densification or spheroidization. An inductive discharge presents, in the coil region, recirculation eddies due to the Lorentz forces, resulting in an axial backflow. If the central jet is strong enough to ""pierce"" the recirculation this axial backflow disappears on the centerline, but the external layer of the injection flow is skimmed by the remaining eddy, and particulates are rejected to the discharge periphery. To avoid this disadvantage, it is common to introduce the injection pipe inside the discharge, so that its outlet is positioned after the recirculation eddy. The powders remain confined in the axial zone, to the expense of shortened residence time.In order to increase the efficiency of the particle trajectories, a double flow injector has been designed. It enables the particles to travel closer to the axis, while the outer schrouding gas is skimmed and passes through the electromagnetic eddies. This injector is made up of two concentric tubes. The powders are injected with the carrier gas in the inner tube. A schrouding gas is injected in the annular space between the inner and the outer tubes. The powder is confined to the vicinity of the axis, resulting in a more homogeneous thermal treatment.Tungsten powders have been spheroidized with and without this device. Using the double flow injection, the spheroidization yield has been increased from 70 % up to 95 %.The design of such an injection device has. been studied and improved using numerical modelling. Another useful tool, a visualisation technique described elsewhere, has been used for the experimental study, that drastically simplifies the comparison between experimental and theoretical results: injecting yttrium oxide into the discharge results in a colorful display of the 4000 K isothenn: the ""cold"" zone, below 4000, appearing as red, and the ""hot"" zone as blue. Furthermore, it is of great industrial interest since it is a very cheap and efficient way to obtain a picture of an important isotherm."

"Construction of the New NY Bridge over the Hudson River 25 miles north of New York City is one of the largest civil infrastructure projects presently underway in the United States (formerly Tappan Zee Hudson River Crossing). The $3.14 billion Design-Build contract is also the largest ever awarded by the state of New York using an Alternative Project Delivery method, and the first major public project to use Design-Build. The new 3.1 mile long bridge will replace the existing Governor Malcolm Wilson Tappan Zee Bridge with a modern twin crossing featuring: Iconic side by side cable stay main spans; significant deck widths accommodating eight lanes of regular traffic, wide shoulders, and a shared use pedestrian and bike path; foundation with excess capacity to fully support a future rail bridge; more than 1,000 large diameter pipe piles driven in deep glacial deposits; drilled shafts installed through steep blast-rock slopes on the east shore landings. Geotechnical challenges included varied bedrock and glacial till surfaces with steep slopes and depths in excess of 750 ft.The purpose of this paper is to highlight major features of the New NY Bridge project with specific focus on the design and construction of the foundations supporting the approach and main span structures from abutment to abutment, provide background on alternative project delivery in NY, as well as provide an overview of the design-build process as it was applied to foundation delivery.The 3.1 mile Governor Malcolm Wilson Tappan Zee Bridge was constructed across the Hudson River connecting Nyack and Tarrytown (Rockland and Westchester Counties). Construction started in March 1952 and was completed in 1955 for a cost of $81 million. The seven lane crossing first opened to traffic on December 15, 1955 and coincided with the opening of a 28 mile segment of highway I-87 / I-287 between Suffern NY and Yonkers NY. The bridge is part of the extensive 574 mile New York State Thruway road system owned and operated by the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA)."

"There are signs that the commodity downturn that has battered the mining industry for the past five years is beginning to ease up. As the dust begins to settle and mining companies begin to take stock of the battle, Newmont Mining Corp. will be one that is standing strong with just a few scrapes and bruises thanks in large part to the leadership of president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg and his right hand man and chief operating officer, Chris Robison.As he closes in on retirement (for a second time) Robison, a third-generation miner from Nevada, took time to speak with Mining Engineering about a 33-year career in which, among other things, he is credited with not just helping Newmont survive the turbulent times but with steering the company to a safer, more productive and more profitable heading.“I think we did it better than anyone else,” Robison said when asked how the company fared during the past five years. “We didn’t talk about it a lot, we just put together a strategy and we delivered.”What Newmont, the world’s second-largest gold mining company by production, delivered since Robison took the position of chief operating officer in 2013 are improvements in costs, porduction, projects and safety.Operating under the mantra of “live within your means,” Robison was pulled out of retirement from Rio Tinto and into a challenging situation at Newmont. The price of gold was in a nose dive from a high of nearly $58/g ($1,800/oz) and heading to levels closer to $38.60/g ($1,200 oz).“Newmont is a big ship that can’t be turned, but has to be steered,” said Robison. “We recognized that we had to set a new course. The direction the ship was going was great for $1,600 to $1,800/oz gold but we were chasing ounces.”Like the rest of the gold mining sector before the falling gold prices, Newmont was focused on volume and was looking for gold wherever it could be found. The slogan at Newmont in 2011 was “7 million ounces a year by 2017.”When Robison came on board it was a different reality.“We had to begin focusing on value over volume as the cornerstone of Newmont going forward,” he said."

This Bureau of Mines study estimates the number of major pieces of coal- mining equipment that will be required to produce 950 million tons of marketable coal in 1980 and 1.2 billion tons in 1985. The coal tonnages were projected in the intermediate coal supply scenario of Project Independence Blueprint (PIB). The equipment projections were determined by consideration of historical trends and by evaluation of information from equipment manufacturers and mining companies. The ability of the manufacturers to meet the projected equipment demands was also determined. It was concluded that equipment supply offers no presently discernible constraint to mining 1.2 billion tons of coal in 1985. A shortfall in projected production for the intervening years, however, is probable owing to anticipated shortages of draglines.

Each year, companies spend millions of dollars on safety training and on safe equipment, money that is generally well spent. Despite that, we still make mistakes. What happens if the mistakes are made not because of inadequate training, but because we are hard-wired to act in a certain way? If you read any of the ?Because of Human Error? text boxes in this document, situations like these may look familiar in your own workplace. ?The issues of risk, health, safety and the environment are getting more attention now than ever before, at all levels of the organization,? said Calvin Price, vice president of Global Health and Safety at LNC-Lavalin Inc., a company with 21,000 workers worldwide. Most would agree with Price that attention to safety is increasing because responsible companies care about their workers and the workers? colleagues, families and communities. However, cynics might say that the safety spotlight is powered by the corporate bottom line. Direct costs created by workplace injuries total $51.8 billion annually and include workers? compensation payments, medical expenses, civil liability damages and litigation expenses. This sum represents a staggering one quarter of each dollar of pretax corporate profits. Indirect costs may run as much as 20 times the direct costs of on-the-job accidents and illnesses. Examples of indirect costs include training replacement employees, investigating the accident and implementing corrective measures, lost productivity, repairing damaged equipment and property, and costs associated with lower employee morale and absenteeism. What?s interesting is that up to 90 percent of incidents are due to human error, not faulty equipment or other factors.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs), despite their small size, are stable and have a large surface area that allows for absorption and removal of ions as well as turbidity in a short period of time. Thus, the present study addressed the synthesis and characterization of Fe3O4 NPs synthesized using the co-precipitation method and evaluated their effect on the coagulation process in water treatment. The Fe3O4 NPs characteristics were evaluated as follows: magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), surface area using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), crystal phase using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and morphology using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). In addition, the effects of the synthetic Fe3O4 NPs on the turbidity reduction of water in various pH levels were evaluated. The synthesized Fe3O4 NPs were without any impurity in the sizes of 22–32 nm, surface area of 99.6 m2/g, pores’ mean diameter size of approximately 10.6 nm, and maximum magnetic saturation of 66.21 emu/gram (emu/g). Using 0.2 g of synthetic Fe3O4 NPs with an initial turbidity of 17 NTU and pH of 6 could reduce all water turbidity (100%). Considering the cheap and facile production and separation, as well as the possibility to reuse them and reduce the sludge water content, iron oxide Fe3O4 NPs can be effectively used for turbidity reduction in the water treatment process.

Brown iron ore deposits in Quitman County , Ga . , were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Georgia , Department of Commerce , and the University of Alabama . Ninety- one holes were drilled , having an aggregate footage of 2,188 feet ; seventy- one holes penetrated 248 feet of iron mineralization . Average thickness of the ore zone was 3.5 feet under an average thickness of 14.7 feet of overburden . The drilling developed inferred reserves containing nearly 30 million long tons of crude ore with an average analysis of 28 percent iron plus minor quantities of manganese . Test work done by the Bureau on the crude ore samples indicated that they would upgrade by current log washer practice , with the use of a 1 /8 - inch screen , and yield 4.4 million dry long tons of concentrate with an average analysis of 52.1 percent iron plus manganese . The weight recovery obtained was 14.7 percent . Research studies made by the Bureau showed that the weight recovery would be increased by changing the screen size without any appreciable sacrifice of grade . The average weight recovery was increased to 18 percent with a 10 - mesh screen and 22.8 percent with a 20 - mesh screen . Screen tests studies indicated that there was no appreciable interlocking of the iron and manganese minerals and the clay and silica waste particles of the materials retained on a 200- mesh screen . Clay was prominent in micron - size slimes . Silica was deleterious in the minus 20 - mesh size .

ALTHOUGH the United States has long led all other countries in both the production and consumption of mineral products, the trend seems definitely toward an increasing dependence upon foreign sources of supply. This is not to take the position that we are either a have or a have-not nation. For years we shall continue to secure a large proportion of our needed minerals: from our own mines, but we must face the fact that this century has seen "a more thorough and intense development of the mineral resources of the United States and a greater depletion of its irreplaceable mineral reserves than has occurred in most other countries. An audit of our mineral production given in the attached charts discloses the extent of our deficiencies. Because of these facts, low-cost foreign sources offer a promising field for the investment of a portion of our mining capital and an opportunity to obtain for the United States a greater supply of strategic metals and minerals. How. ever, to reach this end, the industrialist investing in the foreign field must have the full co-operation and strong backing of the Federal Government and the involved Federal agencies.
