Blast violence has always been a criteria that has been analyzed without a quantitative approach relying on opinions of those viewing the blast and oftentimes does not transfer between open-pit mines, quarries, and construction projects. Added to this confusion is that on many regulate projects, such as U.S. Army Corp of Engineers construction projects, the definition of "flyrock" or violence can vary, and contractors must be able to meet this requirement. This project analyzed hundreds of blasts from various construction projects to develop a new metric to determine blast violence - the Violence Factor. If a blast is fired using 1.25" (32 mm) diameter product and a 10-foot (3 m) bench, vertical uplift of 60 feet (18.3 m) would be considered extreme and violent by any professional in the industry. However, a 100-foot-high (30.5 m) bench using 12" (305 mm) bulk product, having a vertical displacement of 60 feet(18.3 m)might be considered typical or non-worrisome. This is where violence factor is beneficial as itprovides a system of scaling the violence of a blast based on the bench height to give manager a keyperformance indicator (KPI) which is easy to monitor and can provide a large amount of information onsite-specific design variables for their performance on blasting and the end-results of the blast. The Violence Factor of a blast is an integer which is scaled to determine how high vertical uplift of a blast is compared to the bench height. This project analyzed numerous blasts to determine what blast design variables contribute to violence. This violence has also been shown to occur when a non-optimal breakage mechanism, cratering, occurs and the design criteria that lead to this cratering. Finally, this paper will present typical results of various levels of violence including backbreak, fragmentation, and muckpile configuration.

"1. INTRODUCTION AND MOTIVATION Traditionally design processes are focussed at creating new tunnels for lowest building cost. But the trend towards sustainable constructions in tunnelling has greatly increased in recent years. A critical subtask of this approach is to realize the potential for optimizing and reducing the life-cycle costs (LCC) of tunnels and their components. To evaluate underground infrastructure projects from an economic point of view is therefore a highly topical subject of public authorities as well as private companies participating in Public Private Partnerships (PPP) projects. Nowadays, in the case of public works contracts, the contracting authorities shall draw up rules not only for the design but also for life-cycle costing. Within the scope of the decision-making process of building a new tunnel, planning the maintenance activities or the refurbishment of a tunnel in operation, the decision-makers need detailed knowledge about the current and future financial conditions of the planned projects and selected sub-measures. But in practice, the initial costs still represent the primary decision criterion in the planning phase, whereas the subsequent or follow-up costs, respectively, are only estimated roughly. Although tunnels are the key components and the most costly parts of the transport infrastructure, only a small number of scientific papers deal explicitly with the calculation of life-cycle costs for underground infrastructure. And in these cases, most authors use as the starting point only the basic form of the Net Present Value method which is known as the frequently applied life-cycle costing technique in building construction. The present study explains the strategic concept of life-cycle costing and its fundamental instruments for operational implementation. It shows the necessity to take into consideration that there are fundamental methodical problems when the life-cycle concept is transposed without modifications from building construction to civil engineering. The paper will discuss in detail some selected associated problems with the net present value method. On the basis of operational and safety related tunnel equipment it is shown, what impact this may have on principle determining the LCC of tunnels. Selected best-practices of maintenance planning for tunnels undertaken by the German Ministry of Transport fill the theoretical approach of the concept with life and give a practical orientation. In particular government authorities but also construction companies are interested parties in modern cost management considerations. The reason for this development is the replacement of aged excisting structures and the advancement of technical standards. The increase in the total numbers of tunnels (Fig. 1) as well as the need for future re-investments in existing tunnels show the overall economic impact and justify the change towards the life-cycle perspective."

Every mine wants to drill and install roof bolts as fast as possible with maximum safety at the lowest possible installation cost for their conditions. In most circumstances, the intuitive method of higher speeds and pressures can actually have a detrimental effect on the roof drill safety and performance.This paper will outline recent tests carried out at several different coal mines in the Eastern United States. The tests focused on optimizing the drilling parameters of feed pressure, feed rate, rotation speed, and drill torque.The drill feed, rotation speed, and rotation torque, as well as the type of bit selected, have a definite impact on the performance of the roof drill including drilling speed, safety, and tool life. The drilling process can be improved while also improving operator safety and reducing bolt installation costs by maintaining the appropriate roof drill settings for the specific strata conditions.The advantages of improving the drilling process includes increased bit life, increased drill steel life, reduced hanging drill steels, reduced clogging of the vacuum system, decreased whipping drill steel potential, reduced noise generation, and increased cutting size which reduces fine dust generation and dust collection system servicing.INTRODUCTIONIn recent times, the economic pressures that coal producers are facing have created an increased emphasis on controlling operating costs. Several coal operators have pointed out their dissatisfaction with low bit life, and there is a renewed interest in improving tool life and machine performance as part of an overall cost control strategy. Operators are looking for ways to reduce tooling cost, maintenance costs, and drill downtime without decreasing drill performance. This renewed interest in reducing operating costs, along with the ongoing desire to improve safety, created a perfect environment to take a fresh look at the existing fleet of machines to see what could be accomplished. The goal was to take a practical approach to reviewing machine parameters to determine what changes could be made. The emphasis was on changes that would be feasible to roll out to an entire fleet of machines in a short period of time with minimal capital expenditure. The thought process was that significant improvements could be made by simply tuning up the machine parameters to provide a more efficient and safer bolting process."

Considering the magnitude of today's public concern with critical mineral and fuel materials, regarding both their midterm and long term availability, the Nation is fortunate to have in place and operating the coordinated data systems of the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines. Under the supervision and policy direction of the Assistant Secretary--Energy and Minerals, these Department of the Interior agencies have long been responsible for important mineral activities in the Federal Government. Aside from their highly respected mineral industry publications such as the monthly Mineral Industry Surveys, annual Commodity Data Summaries and topical Professional Papers and Reports of Investigation, the Bureau of Mines and Geological Survey data bases and expertise have been readily available for use in emergency situations. Policymakers and decisionmakers in government have placed major reliance upon this ready mineral data and analytical capability in World War II, the Korean War, the recent price control era, and the Arab oil embargo.

ABSTRACT Sooner or later, every producing mine faces the question of fill. This paper invites consideration of mill tailings as an economical, efficient, and quantitatively adequate source of such fill. Some of the advantages, disadvantages, methods of utilization, and methods of treating mill tailings for sand recovery are covered. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SAND FILL DISREGARDING economic com-promise, that material which supports the greatest applied load with the least compression is the best choice for fill. Table I, reproduced from U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 60, is offered as evidence of the adequacy of hydraulically placed sand. Table II gives the results of tests made in an effort to determine the reason for the difference between load hearing qualities of dry-placed and hydraulically-placed sand. From these, it would appear that hydraulic placing gives a denser initial packing, with corresponding higher, and faster development of, load bearing qualities. Assuming this to be true, then if sand from mill tailings can be placed underground economically, it is the superior fill material. Table III summarizes cost data available. The most cursory glance through the available references (2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) will show .that the major benefit from the adoption of sand fill is a decrease in the non-productive fill ?cycle of a working place. This, it is estimated, increases the output of an individual stope by from 25 to 50 per cent. The advantage of reducing the number of required working places for a constant daily production is obvious.

The Olympias Mine in Northern Greece is producing an extremely refractory gold-bearing arsenical pyrite concentrate, containing on the average 41 3 S, 40 3 Fe, 10-12 3 As, 25 ppm Au and 35 ppm Ag. During the process selection stage, more than a dozen alternative technologies? were considered and an in-depth analysis was prepared for the three most promising, ie roasting, pressure oxidation and biological oxidation. Detailed capital and operating cost estimates were prepared, based, where appropriate, on laboratory and pilot-plant tests. A number of criteria was used for process evaluation and selection, including capital and operating costs; environmental impact, gold' recovery, stage of development, etc. Based on the above evaluation, the Sherritt Pressure Oxidation Process was finally selected. A detailed description of the process selection stage, supported with laboratory and pilot-plant test results on many of the processes considered, will be? presented.

[Simple systematic accounting that adequately records all transactions has long been regarded as essential to the welfare of any business enterprise. Some of the defects that detract from the prosperity of the slate industry are attributable to a lack of effectiveness in cost keeping. This condition has promoted the United States Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of accounting methods for the slate industry, and to present for consideration a system of accounts, which it is believe would enable the industry to attain more economical management and operation if accepted by a fair proportion of its important units. The method of accounting presented herein has been worked out with the assistance of leading slate producers and the recommendations are tentative and are submitted in this form as a means of developing constructive criticism. Believing that cooperative effort in this, as in many ether problems will bring the most enduring benefits to the industry as a whole, the writer urges that the cost earnest consideration be given to this vital problem now facing the slate industry.]

In 192b, there wore 47 fatal accidents in the California petroleum industry, 14.6 per cent more than occurred in 1927 when 41 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. This increase in the number of fatal accidents for 1928 has caused the first upward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1923. In no other year during the 6-year period have the fatalities in any one year been greater than those for the preceding year. This fact should be given serious consideration and study by the petroleum industry, and an endeavor should be made to cause the number of fatalities again to decrease and conform to the previous gradual declining trend of the fatality curve. The Australian mineral industry involves a diverse range of expertise and skills. Within that, the mining industry, representing mine planning, mine management and equipment operation, has capital intensive, high productivity equipment and a small but skilled workforce. Continuing education for all personnel in the workforce after formal school courses will be an important contribution towards improving competitiveness. The non-tertiary sector represents a significant proportion of the workforce and requires as much attention as the tertiary educated group. Competency Based Training is now being developed for the mining industry in Australia under the National Training Board and the mining industry is well represented in establishing standards and curriculum. TAFE is a major source of accredited courses but some mining companies are also developing internal courses not necessarily for external accreditation. Articulation of such accredited courses to tertiary mining engineering courses has been considered. The education and training of equipment operators through continuing education requires attention to operating skills, an understanding of the productivity factors under the direct influence of the operator and providing product quality to the customer. The education and training of mining engineers has been widely covered and continuing close involvement of the mining industry is required to ensure well balanced courses in technical and interpersonal skills as well as motivation to continue learning for life. Postgraduate research is a part of continuing education but the mining industry has to continually address the adequate recognition of post-graduate qualifications for the increased technical or management expertise and the development of better analytical and problem solving skills which can be directed towards improving competitiveness. More attention has to be paid to providing adequate financial incentives to attract suitable students, particularly after attaining some experience, and to address their professional career path with a company so they are not significantly disadvantaged by undertaking post-graduate studies. The Chartered Professional Engineer status as provided by The Institution of Engineers, Australia to qualified candidates is being considered by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as a further recognition of a member's specific expertise and competence in mining and metallurgical engineering. Continuing education plays a major part in the maintenance of the expertise and competence required for a professional engineer to develop and also to retain chartered status. Continuing education will be a significant part of the education and training of all the mining workforce towards improving the competitiveness of the mining industry. The major challenges will be the motivation of all towards lifelong learning and the integration of the various programs towards providing the opportunity for a steady and satisfying career progression.

Since its creation in 1910, the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines has pioneered in the development of mineral technology, through research. From the very beginning, research on mine health and safety has been a dominating concern, and a responsibility that expanded markedly as a result of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Until the mid-1970's research on fuel technology and coal production also was an important part of the Bureau's work. But in the four years following the 1973 oil crisis, Congress established a reorganized Federal energy research apparatus in which all fossil fuel research-encompassing extraction, use, and conservation-was centralized. Today, the Department of Energy houses Federal research on coal mine production technology, while research on coal and noncoal mine health and safety and environmental technology, and on noncoal mine production technology, remains in the Interior Department as a continuing responsibility of the Bureau of Mines. INTRODUCTION Today, conventional raise boring is an accepted method of development in underground mines and on major construction projects. Over the years that this technique, and its associated machines and tools, have been under development, many articles have been written on the subject. To a great extent, these papers have reported operating results of one or more specific projects or have been generalized reviews of state-of-the-art machines and tools. This paper is intended as a review of the technique from an operational standpoint. Conventional raise boring, as opposed to the related variants box hole drilling and underground blast hole drilling, is a two step process consisting of the pilot hole drilling and reaming cycles. This author has covered the subject of pilot hole drilling in another article (1) . A good review of the current machines and equipment has been presented by Monroe (2) and an overall review of this entire technology was published by E&MJ (3) and Mining Journal, April, 1983 (4) . The subject of the reaming cycle is presented here together with some of the technical aspects of how the drilling tools are intended to be used. Magnetite ores can be used to produce very high-grade concentrates that are suitable feed for the direct reduction process route but the high sulfur content of some concentrates can cause substantial environmental issues. Processing of high sulfur magnetite ore is therefore increasingly problematic for the industry. Generally, the industry demands a concentrate with <0.05 per cent sulfur and <2 per cent silica. This paper reports the outcomes of a study to produce a concentrate with the requisite low sulfur content from a sulfur-rich magnetite ore. The main findings may be summarised as follows: if the sulfur is present in magnetite as nonmagnetic pyrrhotite or pyrite, it can be beneficiated using magnetic separation and hence, monoclinic pyrrhotite is magnetic and is magnetically recovered with magnetite leading to a concentrate that is too high in sulfur. X-ray diffraction and QEMSCAN analyses revealed that the magnetite concentrate was liberated at P80 30 microns and was associated with maghemite, pyrrhotite (magnetic), carbonates and hematite with very low amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite and arsenopyrite. Sulfur removal using flotation was the first stage of investigation and this required flash flotation in the grinding stage followed by column flotation of the initial concentrate to generate the final concentrate. At the same time, it was observed that oxidation of the pyrrhotite had a negative effect on its flotation requiring copper sulfate to activate it. Bioleaching and concentrate leaching were also considered and achieved over 90 per cent sulfur removal but were deemed unsuitable owing to the production of highly reactive wastes and high CAPEX. Reference is made to a number of operating magnetite producers and how they manage the sulfur in feed.

The selection of leach reagent mainly according to the ratio of useful mineral to gangue in mineral raw material and the structure of mineral raw material. Besides that the price of reagent, the capability of reagent decomposing mineral and its causticity on equipment is also supposed to be in regard. On common conditions, the scandium content in mineral raw material is low, even Sc concentrate of specimen-Yunnan rare earth ore which contain Sc used in this experiment only is 148 g/t. Moreover, in enlarging scale experiments the content of scandium in leach liquid is only 3.6g/t, meanwhile various and complicated impurity existing in it. At present, both domestic and abroad has succeed in enriching scandium from vitriol solution, while enriching scandium from hydrochloric acid only has been studied in some minority units, which is not reported to be practical in industry. Therefore, this item offer a new research issue on Sc?s extract, which is as well as the task of this research. Spectrum analysis, chemic component analysis and scandium content have been made in main mineral measurement on rare earth with Sc in the paper. Based on characters of sample, select hydrochloric acid, vitriol and nitric acid as leach reagent and make different blueprints to accomplish the experimental research about selecting leach reagent. In the aspect of rare earth leach scandium leach density is researched, leach liquid to solid rate, leach temperature, leach time, leach granule rate and leach solution. This experiment claims that in the optimal experimental ambience, leach rate of vitriol is 58.18%, the leach rate of nitric acid is 50.73% and the leach rate of hydrochloric acid is 59.34%. Among them, hydrochloric acid has the best effect, therefore this experiment choose it as the leach reagent.

We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is intended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation&apos;s romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

The Corefco ammonia leach nickel refinery treats Ni-Co mixed sulphides from the high-pressure acid leaching of Moa Bay nickel laterite. Due to the low iron content of the feed, the ammonia leach process generates a leach residue with ~10% Ni+Co. Since commissioning a leach residue pressure filtration circuit in 2002, this residue has been stockpiled, dried, and sold commercially. For several years, the residue was sold to nickel smelters overseas. In 2014, re-processing of the residue in the high-pressure acid leach was tested. Lab test work was completed showing excellent extraction of the contained nickel and cobalt, and additional beneficial effects in the high-pressure acid leach circuit. A plant test in Moa confirmed the results, and preparation for shipment of the valuable leach residue for re-processing has begun. This paper outlines the test work and results, and some commercial considerations.

Laboratory work was continued in the direction of process simplification to determine an economically feasible procedure that mould require a minimum of expensive equipment for plant erection and a minimum of regent consumption for operation. Results furnished enough evidence to indicate that modifications of the process could be made leading to simplified procedure and with no sacrifice in operating efficiency. A supply of at least 200 pounds of the metal was desired for alloy research, and it was believed worth Mile to utilize available facilities in a search for difficulties, that were not encountered in the laboratory and that might arise in larger-scale operation. Consequently, an experimental pilot plant was erected. The plant was designed for a capacity of 15 rounds per day of metal and operated under simulated -plant practice.

QMAP (the Quarter Million Mapping Programme, 1:250 000 scale) is a geological mapping programme which will build a digital geological database of the whole country and publish maps and books to document it. The programme was established in 1993, following a recommendation by a review panel appointed by the Ministry of Research, Science &amp; Technology, and is funded by the government, from the Public Good Science Fund. The relevance and fundamental value of QMAP lies in the greatly improved geological knowledge it will provide for researchers and other end-users of geological information. &nbsp; QMAP research involves assessment of previous work, field and laboratory investigations in key areas, and data storage, manipulation and publication using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) computer technology. The QMAP digital database of New Zealand geology will be completed by 2006, as will the series of 21 full colour printed geological maps and accompanying explanatory texts. Two are already completed and published (Kaitaia and Dunedin), and six other projects are well advanced. &nbsp; QMAP information will also be available in digital form. Next year we hope to expand the scope of the programme to cover the reconciling and linking of many other earth science databases to QMAP, because we believe this will create a powerful research tool. The intention is to develop internet access to the databases, to make the information publicly available.

"SYNOPSISKnown health hazards associated with the breathing of respirable dusts, particularly silica dust, during mining are becoming a great concern in many parts of the world. The search for effective and low cost dust control methods for underdeveloped countries will help in improving the productivity and keeping the mine environment safe. This article addresses the problem by providing suggestions concerning the easiest and most cost effective methods to control respirable dust in mining and mineral processing operations. INTRODUCTIONMedical BackgroundLung diseases caused by dust in mining operations have been recognized by mankind since the time of the Roman Empire. The writings of Pliny the Younger on natural history reported on maladies associated with dust in mining in the first century AD. However, no significant advances in controlling the lung diseases of miners came about for many centuries. The effects of mineral dusts were further described by Georgius Agricola in his sixteenth century book on mining (Agricola, 1556). After the appearance of Agricola""s book, lung diseases were more readily recognized, but the nature and severity of the ailments associated with mineral dusts could not be readily interpreted.In 1896, the discovery of x-rays by Roentgen advanced the diagnosis of lung diseases and the knowledge of what causes these diseases. In addition, the discovery allowed medical personnel some method of judging the extent and severity of the lung diseases in human beings. During the ensuing years, the term 'pneumoconiosis' became the common term to describe any of the diseases of the lung in which dust particles deposited in the lungs caused fibrous tissue and loss of some of the respiratory function. However, little in the way of social remedies for the diseases resulted until much later. Society was still not ready to act decisively to reduce the causes of lung disease due to the dusty conditions in the work place.Social action against lung diseases did not occur in the United States (US) until the 1930s. At that time, a tunnel driven through a sandstone mountain near Gauley Bridge. West Virginia, caused the death of several hundred workers due to acute silicosis, a severe form of pneumoconiosis caused by silica (Seaton, 1975). Dust conditions in this tunnel were quite bad, causing many of the workers to be subjected to extremely high silica dust concentrations. The severity of the disease in many of the workers became known to the public and prompted the US Congress and many of the states to enact laws to reduce the dust levels."

The present work analyzes the latest results achieved in scrap based EAFs in terms of application of chemical energy, starting from the observation that the general trend is a reduction of oxygen utilization. Consequently a review is needed about criteria for evaluation of melting process efficiency and equipment design. If from one side the maximization of productivity remains one of the major goals, from the other side some aspects of present market situation, included price of raw materials, are requiring the maximization of process yield. Based on achieved performance figures of selected plants and theoretical considerations, the effect of chemical energy input intensity is analyzed focusing on transformation cost, productivity and total energy input. The effect of present practices with lower oxygen utilization is considered also in terms of global CO2 emissions. Finally, the latest Danieli concepts and technological tools for optimization of chemical input are presented.
