"IntroductionExperience at Eldorado has been gained with a variety of mill feeds. That is, the actual mode of occurrence of the pitchblende varies to such an extent that gravity concentration has at times been decidedly unattractive and at others highly successful. Because of this, the type of ore necessary for economic recovery of pitchblende have become well known. Also, those types which do not lend themselves to gravity concentration have become familiar. In general, it may be said that when the pitchblende occurs free, to a large extent, from sulphides or arsenides of high specific gravity, and when the bulk of the pitchblende is localized rather than disseminated, excellent recoveries, high ratios of concentration, and good grades of concentrates , will result from proper gravity concentration. On the other hand, if the ore contains pitchblende intimately or otherwise mixed with large quantities of arsenides or sulphides, or if the pitchblende is finely disseminated, gravity concentration alone will yield high recoveries only at the expense of very low-grade concentrates and low ratios of concentration.According to Taggart, the ease with which gravity separation may be effected is determined by the value of the following ratio: []It is stated that when the ratio is above 1.75, gravity separation can be expected to be easy. Thus with pure U308 (S.G. over 9) and gangue consisting chiefly of siliceous material, the process can he expected to be entirely successful even when carried on at very fine sizes. Unfortunately, the term pitchblende covers a great diversity of material. Although some of the mineral occurs pure enough to have a specific gravity of about 7, the average is much lower than this and is probably well under 5. Some of the pitchblende particles have a specific gravity so low that gravity concentration fails completely. It may also be said that no degree of grinding will produce free pitchblende of sufficient density from such particles. This, then, represents the most important limitation to the application of gravity separation to pitchblende ores."

The Bureau of Mines investigated processes for recovering a marketable lithium product from the montmorillonite-type clays of the McDermitt caldera. The clay deposit, located on the Nevada-Oregon border, is estimated to contain over 3 million short tons of lithium. Limestone-gypsum roasting and selective chlorination proved most successful for extracting lithium from the clays; 80-pct Li recovery was achieved using either technique. With both processes, lithium silicate in the clay was converted to a water-soluble compound-either lithium sulfate or lithium chloride. The lithium was then recovered as a carbonate by water leaching the calcine, concentrating the leach solution by evaporation, and precipitating the lithium with soda ash. The operating costs for the limestone-gypsum roast process were estimated at $2.02/lb Li2C03; selective chlorination operating costs were estimated at $3.85/1b Li2C03. The current selling price of Li2C03 is about $1.50/lb. A detailed flowsheet, material balance, and process evaluation are presented for the limestone-gypsum roast process. In addition, lithium reserves and resources are discussed and the McDermitt clays are described.

Dragados USA is constructing the LA Effluent Outfall Tunnel, a 7-mile, 18 ft internal diameter effluent discharge tunnel, utilizing a 21.6 ft (6.585 m) Herrenknecht Mixshield TBM. This paper highlights the means and methods used for TBM launch from a 55 ft diameter shaft excavated in wet with diaphragm wall support of excavation. This included SEM excavation of jet grout blocks for starter and tail tunnels, temporary concrete structures and steel installations, TBM sealing system, umbilical management for TBM hydraulic, electric and bentonite circuits as well as complex segment delivery logistics. The many launching challenges were overcome thanks to the innovative approaches from the project team.

At is important for today?s mining executives and leaders not to underestimate the fact that, while the recent downturn in the economy did take its toll on balance sheets and productivity, factors such as emerging countries, aging workforces, globalization and individual knowledge growth did not lay dormant while the economy was in a lull. It is key for mining leaders to be proactive in their talent strategies. Successful mining companies are developing a clear, concise and communicated strategy and placing a high priority on recruiting the right talent in global markets that parallels their business strategy. They are focused on placing the right people in the right jobs.

MY YEAR OF SERVICE as president of the A.I.M.E. came at a time when the mineral industry had suffered severely because of disturbed economic conditions throughout the world. The Institute, an integral part of this industry, had been similarly affected. Its membership and revenues decreased; it was confronted by problems of retrenchment at a time when its vigorous operation was especially important to its members, of some moment to the mining industry, and of value to the nation. Throughout the last year, the recession of activity in our industry continued with slight abatement. Your Board accordingly exercised such economy within the Institute as was possible without impairment of essential functions. It endeavored to aid in sustaining the morale of members, their sense of professional unity, and their interest in maintaining research and the interchange of scientific and technologic data upon which the progress of our industry depends. Effort was made to assist in the difficult task of finding employment for needy members; our endeavors have met with some success.

M ANY elements can now be obtained in radioactive form. The radioisotopes have the same chemical properties as the corresponding inactive forms, differing from them only by their nuclear instability. This combination of properties permits radioelements to act as atomic tracers, the tracer atoms revealing themselves at the time of their decay with emission of electrons and positrons (beta radiation), helium nuclei (alpha radiation), or electromagnetic radiation (gamma radiation). The tracer technique is particularly attractive for the study of surface chemistry problems in general and flotation problems in particular because of its extreme sensitivity. A large proportion of the ionizing events, initiated by the characteristic decay emissions in a radioactive sample, can be recorded by radiation probes of suitable design and geometry. An idea of this sensitivity can be gathered from the following example: assume that 0.001 mg of pure RaD (radiolead), a beta-ray emitter, is used in a flota¬tion tracer experiment. This is 1210 X 10-1 mole; since the fraction trans¬formed per second (the so-called decay constant), is 9.92 X 10-10, the number of ionizing events per second would be (6.023 X 1023 X y,,, X 10-1) X 9.92 X 10-10 = 2.845 X 106. (The decay constant is expressed in sec-'. Its product with the half life, expressed in seconds, is the pure number, natural logarithm of 2 = 0.693. The half life is the length of time required for decay of one half of the total number of radioactive atoms of one particular type.) (See reference (1) at the end of this article.)

Drilling activity increased in Illinois in 1935. There were 34 com-pletions as compared with 26 in 1934 and 18 wells were drilling at the end of 1935. Some large blocks of acreage were leased in Marion and Clay counties near the central part of the Illinois structural basin. Production of oil in the state totaled 4,305,000 bbl., a decrease of 4 per cent from that of 1934 There was some curtailment of production in the early part of 1935 but none after April 30 as shown in the following table. "Alloying refining with rare earth elements followed by acid leaching was examined for the potential of upgrading of metallurgical grade silicon. Microstructure study of silicon alloyed with small additions of rare earths showed behavior relatively similar to the influence of calcium addition. After alloying with neodymium the phosphorus content was detected in various intermetallic silicides containing neodymium and iron. The content of lanthanum and neodymium in refined silicon was by several times lower than that of aluminium and calcium. Alloying with lanthanum and neodymium at smaller additions than calcium reduced the phosphorus content down to the same level. The efficiency of lanthanum and neodymium in removal of boron and phosphorus at the 1-2 wt% of their additions and their low solubility in silicon make the alloying with these metals followed by acid leaching an attractive option for the refining route of metallurgical grade silicon up to solar grade.IntroductionA striving for a cheap ""green"" energy directs the research interests in silicon solar cells towards new efficient refining routes for metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si, -98% purity). The silicon price determines up to high extent the solar module's price, so that cheap and efficient metallurgical process is awaited. The research challenge is to fulfil the purity requirements of solar grade silicon (SoG-Si, 6N) by competing with the energy-consuming and environmentally unfriendly Siemens process. Most difficult impurities to remove are boron and phosphorus, so technologies dedicated to their efficient removal attract an attention of industry and academia.Alloying refining (also known as solvent refining) is one of the most promising refining options, which is based on a principle of solid-liquid extraction using limited solubility of impurity elements in solid silicon [ 1]. Various elements were proposed for alloying refining: aluminium [2], calcium [3], tin [4], iron [5], copper [6] etc. The attractiveness of the alloying refining is in decreasing a melting point of the metal mixture and an affinity of the alloying element to the most harmful impurities, especially to boron and phosphorus. However, the difficulties are still faced due to self-solubility of the alloying elements, their low affinity to boron and/or phosphorus, silicon losses and necessity of removal of the silicide impurity phases in an additional step, using acid leaching [7], fractional melting [ 8] etc."

It is a distinguished honor for me to have this opportunity, and I am highly appreciative of this distinction. The beautiful surroundings of Gatlinburg and the pleasantness of a summer occasion are a wonderful tonic for all of us, yet they should not blind us to the seriousness of our Industry's problems No doubt, because of my past appearances before members of the Society of Mining Engineers, at which I discussed wholly scientific topics, or research in the Applied Sciences, you may be expecting me to revert to these subjects. But I intend to venture in a field that is new to me, yet old to all of us, the field of Economics.

"Falling commodity prices and a rising supply surplus have ushered in a period of restraint in capital project investment across the global mining and metals sector. Competition for capital project funding has seen fewer projects progress through investment gates and a stronger focus on projects that deliver gains in capital productivity and strategic outcomes.Over the course of the 2015 financial year, EY conducted a study of 108 projects in the global mining and metals sector (EY analysis; Larsson and Ericsson, 2014; SNL Financial, 2015). The projects studied were at various life cycle stages and related to the development of copper, iron ore, gold, coal, nickel and other commodities. Each individual project investment exceeded US$1 B, and the studied group represented a cumulative investment value of US$367 B.The research found that the majority of projects were delayed and/or over budget when measured against the initial estimates made during the early stages of the project life cycle. Of the surveyed projects, 69 per cent were identified as facing cost overruns with an average overrun of 62 per cent above the initial estimate and 50 per cent reported schedule delays, even after remedial acceleration initiatives.The analysis found that budget and schedule overruns could be attributed to five key causes:project management factorsstakeholder conflictsresource constraintsregulatory, and policy-related challengesunfavourable external environment.Improving project delivery performance starts with successful planning, followed by rigorous management during delivery. "The industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)—a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems—has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. NIOSH researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify challenges of and potential solutions for transferability of IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40% of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system based on low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards, to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine, and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communications and tracking infrastructure. INTRODUCTION The nation’s approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communications with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there currently exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is the network of physical objects or ""things"" embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator, and/or other connected devices [1, 2]. It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: internet and things. The first one pushes towards a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional internet can be viewed as an internet of computers —i.e., “things” connected to the internet are computers only. IoT “extends” the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in our daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected via the internet, and thus creates a bridge between the virtual word and the physical world."

Smelters of medium or low grade tin concentrates must recover a high proportion of tin from iron-bearing slags or concentrates; the volatility of tin sulphide makes possible the production of iron-free tin fume. Laboratory work defined conditions which would promote the sulphidisation of tin slags and concentrates melted with them, to result in tin recovery as fume, and a residue of less than 0.5% Sn content, which could be controlled to vary with the value of tin. Subsequently pilot-plant work on 6-tonne and 15-tonne scale led to a commercial plant of 45 tonne. capacity (1962), for melting and fuming primary and secondary low-grade tin materials by submerged combustion. Some factors contributing to the rate of Working expressed in terms of the 'half-life and the amount of work done, the 'half-life-tonne' are studied, leading to the design and operation (1972) of the 100-tonne water-jacketed unit, presently in use, treating a wide range of slags and low tin-content ores and residues.

Many copper processing flowsheets in the Democratic Republic of Congo include the leaching of oxide ores containing copper and cobalt, copper solvent extraction, copper electrowinning, and precipitation of cobalt salt. Recently, cobalt price gained momentum, driven mostly by the fast-growing electric vehicles battery market. The ore blending scenarios tend to prioritise high cobalt grade ore, whatever the content of copper and other impurities. Therefore, many copper solvent extraction circuits are running below design capacity. The variability of feed induces a variability of the leach solution with respect to copper, manganese, and silica contents. It is thus important to adjust hydrodynamic and metallurgical parameters of the solvent extraction plant to optimise metallurgical performance, production cost, and the quality of the copper electrolyte. This paper presents some results on how solvent extraction plant parameters have been managed in two solvent extraction plants running with lower than designed copper input. INTRODUCTION Referring to a report of the chamber of commerce of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) the online publication Agence Ecofin (2019) indicated that the DRC ranks in the fifth position of the world top copper producing countries with over 1.2 million tons produced in 2018. The same year, 66% of the world’s cobalt was produced in the DRC at over 106,000 tons. If the political situation remained stable and the new tax regime introduced in 2018 did not deter private investors, copper production could reach 1.4 million tons/a in 2020 as pointed out in Mining.com (2019). Forecast figures for DRC cobalt production vary widely depending on analysts. The DRC online magazine Actualité.cd (2018) referring to a ministerial source forecasts over 141,000 t cobalt/a for 2020. The reality will depend on many factors, including the selling price, the supply compared to the demand, and finally the reaction of investors to the new DRC tax regime. The growing electric vehicle batteries market has been the major key driver of the price of cobalt. The five years historical cobalt price graph in figure 1 from infomine.com (2019) shows that the price of cobalt peaked at over 40 USD/lb in the first quarter of 2018. Cited by the online Magazine Creamer Media, Smith (2019) has indicated that the long-term demand of cobalt will likely remain strong.

This chapter deals with the systems of laws by which governments regulate the exploration for and production of the minerals within their jurisdictions. It is a summary, restricted by necessary space limitations, of material assembled by the author for a publication of the United States Bureau of Mines, "Summary of Mining and Petroleum Laws of the World," (Information Circular 80 1 7, 196 1. ) The present study is organized in three parts, dealing with (1) the historical background of these legal systems, (2) laws of the United States, and (3) laws of other countries of the world. The reader's attention is invited to the acknowledgments at the end of the chapter, which inadequately express the appreciation due those who have assisted in the collection of this material. Part I. Historical Development of Major Western Systems of Land Tenancy with Respect to the Ownership and Control of Minerals The use of metals in primitive societies was largely confined to the manufacture of weapons for self-preservation. The ruler's control over copper, then bronze, then iron, was essential to maintenance of his own ascendancy at home and his group's position against neighbors who had access to similar metals. Ancient societies were thus characterized by the ruling group's ownership of minerals and metals. The Egyptian civilization, which emerged in the fourth millenium B.C. upon the agricultural subjugation of the lower valley of the Nile, was responsible for extensive development of the upper valley as a source of mineral wealth. The production of gold during the height of that civilization has been estimated at $30,000,000 per year, thus equaling the early placers of California and Australia. This paper discusses the factors that contribute to the cost effective design of a concentrator. Concentrator design and layout outcomes are functions of the team (engineer’s and owner’s) participating in each particular project. The benchmark for relatively modest projects was set in the 1980s and 1990s during the ‘gold boom’ when numerous cost effective plants were designed and constructed on a lump sum basis in a very competitive market. A number of factors contribute to lack of transference of the lessons learnt in gold plant design to concentrator design including established paradigms in the design and layout of concentrators, lack of experience in cost effective design, operator’s preferences for flowsheet and layout and simple lack of appreciation of the impact of plant footprint on materials quantities and resultant capital costs.Experiences with recent copper concentrator projects (both small and large) are used as case studies.

The Witwatersrand Supergroup is host to the world’s largest gold deposits. The location, quantity, grade, continuity and other geological characteristics of a Mineral Resource are either known, estimated from specific geological evidence and knowledge, or interpreted from a well constrained and portrayed geological model. Establishing such a model is an integral part of the evaluation process in the Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) group, and is referred to as a Geoscience Business Model for the mining operations. The geological model established over the years has relied on detailed descriptions of the mineralisation, and understanding of the regional and local geology of the Witwatersrand sediments, in the West Wits and Free State goldfields. The processes of data collection in regard to underground stope and developing mapping, structural and sedimentological mapping, and the geological inputs to mine planning systems are described, together with aspects of drilling, sampling, grade control, and data management. Anglogold Ashanti’s Geoscience Department employs a complex and unique process to generate the Mineral Resource, including a 3D geological structure model of the orebodies which are usually highly faulted, and a robust mineralisation/facies model on which the decisions about domain boundaries are established. A Mineral Resource Inventory System (MRIS) has a dynamic graphic interface to the resource database that is used for compiling the resource statement. It is also used to determine the gold-called-for, as well as short and long-term planning. A unique estimation process using the extensive closely spaced stope face sampling database and the more widely spaced surface drilling information is used in combination in the Macro Co-Kriging estimation. The use of different support sizes in the C0-Kriging process is preceded by the equally unique ‘clusterisation’ and ‘acceptorisation’ procedures by which the data are quality controlled and assured prior to their use in the kriging process. The Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates are classified according to the SAMREC code through a method that ensures that they are compliant, auditable, transparent and reconcilable with previous Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve statements.

It is a preprint of a part of a bulletin being prepared by the United States Bureau o Mines entitled "Equipping, Developing and Operating Small Gold Mines". The increased interest in gold mining manifested during the past few years (1932-1935) bas stimulated prospecting. Many adventurers have taken to the field to search for now gold deposits. A. large percentage of them have had no previous experience in prospecting for lode gold; this paper has been written with the tope that it might assist these newcomers.

The Chinese energy and mineral industries are readying themselves for a period of dynamic transition, unprecedented in the country's long and sometimes turbulent history. The transition comes as a result of the government's new program of "Four Modernizations" in its agricultural, defense, industry, and science and technology sectors. The announced program is generally considered by Western observers to be a moderate, pragmatic approach to get China on the road to industrial parity with Western nations by the year 2000. The game plan calls for integration with the West to beef up Chinese know-how and the purchase of foreign technology to supplement areas where China lacks the ability to do so itself. While the role of energy and minerals is not specifically mentioned in the program, it was made clear to ME that China realizes the basis of any sustained modernization program is tied closely to the health of its minerals sector. Various published reports have indicated the existence of an already vibrant energy and minerals sector with world rank production in coal, iron ore, tin, antimony, cement, pyrite, asbestos and tungsten to name just a few. For the most part, except for the export metals, the primary focus of China's production has been on fulfilling domestic needs. Big Projects Spark Excitement China's renewed commitment to a more liberal program is as much a desire to "walk on its own two legs" as it is a backlash from the frustrating years that followed the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and early 1970s. Much of the early excitement was initiated by China's Premier and Party Chairman Hua Guo-feng in speaking to the fifth National People's Congress (NPC) in 1978. Here, Chairman Hua presented the Communist Party's 10-year blueprint for economic development. Specifically, the Party's plans called for completion of 120 large-scale industrial projects by 1985.
