The procedure to arrive at an energy efficient autogenous grinding plant is carried out in the following steps: First Step - Determine power requirements to grind a particular ore. This work carried out on small samples ground in a 450 mm diameter Aerofall Hill and the results are checked against a standard Bond Index test. Second Step - A bulk sample from the ore zone is ground in a 1.8 m diameter pilot mill. This work is carried on until the power objectives as indicated from the first step have been realized. Third Step - Correlate the pilot mill data, with the data from the numerous samples ground in the small 450 mm mill and arrive at design criteria for the commercial plant. Ensure commercial mill design will be suitable to obtain similar results as those obtained in the pilot mill.

The residues resulting from the retort distillation of zinc ores have from 40 to 75 per cent of the weight of the original ore and contain from 5 to 15 per cent zinc . A rough estimate indicates that approximately 450,000 tons of residues are produced annually in the United States , containing about 36,000 tons of zinc . Besides the current production of residues there are at many smelter sites large accumulations from past operations which are available for treatment if this can be done profitably . In addition to their zinc content the residues contain much unconsumed coal , which has been carbonized during the distillation process , and those from most western ores also contain lead and silver . In this paper is summarized the information obtained in a survey , recently made by the Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy , of processes which are in use or which have been suggested for the treatment of retort residues . The complete report of the survey is to be published as a Technical Paper of the Bureau of Mines .

"Cutoff walls are frequently used to slow down or prevent seepage of water through and/or around dams. Cutoff wall is a type of seepage barrier structure designed to reduce the flow of water underneath temporary or main dam. There are number of techniques for the construction of cutoff walls including concrete, Jet grouting and permeation grouting. NHPC LTD, a premier Govt. of India undertaking has been instrumental in the hydropower development within the country & in nearby countries like Nepal & Bhutan since last four decades. NHPC LTD has completed more than 20 hydro-electric projects with total installed capacity of 6587MW (including capacity addition by JV- NHDC). In all these projects, different types of dams and spillways were constructed in not so benign to extreme challenging geological set up. There has always been challenge associated with the temporary diversion works. The project sites sometimes incur huge river bed excavations in case of concrete gravity dam founded on rock foundation at large depth. The challenges for minimizing the seepage have been well taken care by constructing the dedicated seepage barriers. The construction of cut-off walls have progressed from “conventional continuous trench backfilled with conventional concrete or plastic concrete” to “grout curtain”, to “jet grouting” to the “concrete cut-off wall” , the last being the most sophisticated & credible seepage barrier.The efficiency of the cut-off walls are monitored by the seepage quantity observed (reduction of the seepage flow), uplift pressures or exit gradients after construction of cut-off walls. For construction of the main concrete dam, required space is created by the river bed excavation for placing the dam foundation on sound rock. Sometimes there is deep river bed excavation from 30 to 40 m depth or even more as per the available rock profile. Temporary coffer dams are constructed for diverting the river flow through diversion tunnels / channels etc. In deep river bed excavation; there are high chances of the significant seepage through the coffer dam foundation / river bed material due to high hydraulic gradients. Seepage and piping are the main causes of the failure / damage of the temporary coffer dams. If the seepage quantity is too high, then it becomes difficult to handle it by dewatering in the dam pit. Dam concrete is required to be placed unhindered to have a monolithic construction of dam blocks & to have faster construction in the working season. Cut-off walls increase the seepage path considerably thus reducing the exit gradient and further reduction of the seepage thus helping in maintaining the seepage free area for working."

Treating an ore blend from five different deposits at Newgold’s Peak Gold Mine (PGM) has always been a challenge due to the inherent variability between each of the orebodies.Operating the processing plant at PGM with a ‘normal’ level of process control and a good operations and metallurgical team has allowed the processing plant to achieve above the name plate design at 102 t/h and recoveries in the order of 92.8 per cent for gold and 88.4 per cent for copper.With a company value and culture of striving for continuous improvement, PGM implemented the Manta Cube® system, an advanced process control system, for the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, gold leach circuit and tailings thickener over a 12-month period throughout 2012 and 2013.The overall benefits of implementing the Manta Cube® system has led to an increase in mill throughput of at least two per cent, improved SAG mill liner life, a ten per cent decrease in cyanide consumption and a reduction in flocculant of at least 30 per cent with no detriment to the gold and copper recoveries.The entire project had a payback period of less than two months, and the combined benefits resulted in an overall increase in revenue of at least $5 million per annum. This paper provides updates to the paper published by the lead author at RETC 2011 with a summary of developments in technologies, products, and approaches to corrosion analyses of gravity sewer tunnels and microtunnels. This paper presents approaches in evaluating degradation of reinforced concrete liners. Also, the carbon footprint of conventional concrete liners and alternative “green” liners are compared and their life cycle costs are considered. A few case histories from the past decade are provided indicating the latest and emerging trends in liner protection.

The strategic minerals investigations of the bureau afford an example of this change in emphasis to problems of immediate and urgent interest, and during 1941 they comprised, upon the basis of appropriations and expenditures, more than 90 percent of the work of the division.

"Atlas Copco is introducing a new patented method for full-face boring. This paper presents the basic principles of the boring action and discusses the present experience regarding performance and costs. The Atlas Copco ""Full-facers"" are designed for hard-rock applications, although they are successfully boring in soft ground without major changes. The unique patented boring principle referred to as the 'Undercutting Method' permits these machines to bore, economically, in harder ground than machines based on the 'crushing principle'. This is mainly due to considerably lower cutting-tool costs, as the tungsten carbide tips only are in contact with one-third of the bored volume. The remaining rock is 'undercut' and peels off from a slight back pressure.The undercutting method also permits boring of non-circular headings and Atlas Copco has already manufactured two machines for rectangular drifts. This concept could revolutionize development work in mines employing trackless equipment."

Fuel is a major .cost for power generating utilities. Virginia Power is completing one of the nation's largest coal reconversion programs. As a result, 10 million tons of coal will now be used at six generating stations. Four of these stations are located on naviagable waterways. They consume over half of Virginia Power's coal. Historically, railroads have exclusively served these plants. In an effort to substantially reduce fuel cost, Virginia Power has reexamined transportation logistics and is proceeding with barge delivery. A phased approach was used by Virginia Power for the transportation program. Plant requirements were first identified. Coal sourcing issues were then examined. The concept of intermodal transportation was investigated. The bottom line cost savings was used as the criteria for continuing the project. The results thus far have been gratifying. Virginia Power has begun to implement barge transportation.

This proceedings volume contains papers presented at technology transfer seminars sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on New Technology for Ground Control in Retreat Mining. The seminars were conducted at five locations: Uniontown, PA (March 26, 1997), Norton, VA (April 8, 1997), Pikeville, KY (April 10, 1997), Charleston, WV (April 17, 1997), and Evansville, IN (April 22, 1997). The papers presented here describe several new, highly practical technologies developed by the NIOSH Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Centers3 to improve safety during pillar retreat operations. Two central issues are addressed: pillar design and mobile roof supports (MRS's). Proper pillar sizing is essential for safe pillar extraction. The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program and its large data base of actual mining case histories are presented. LAMODEL, a second computer program, can be used for analysis of multiple-seam and other complex mining situations. Other papers address pillar design to avoid massive pillar collapses and the proper role of coal strength testing. MRS's have greatly improved safety where they are used for pillar line support. We studied the application of MRS's at 20 mines throughout the Eastern United States. Conclusions regarding the most effective section layouts, cut sequences, and support placements are reported. Field and laboratory tests of MRS's are also described.

Underground contractors in the mining industry must be prepared to take a position at the forefront of innovation of equipment and work methods in order to maintain a competitive advantage over in-house operations and remain relevant. Innovative concepts such as split-feed development jumbos, high capacity trucks and loader guidance systems were implemented by contractors to stay ahead of ‘the pack’. All of these are now common across the industry.The demands of regular participation in competitive tendering coupled with aggressive fleet depreciation, means contractors tend to have more communication and opportunities to work with equipment suppliers than mine owners. Therefore, they are more likely to influence equipment design and product directions. They also have a unique opportunity to assist in trialling new concepts and technologies across a wide variety of operating conditions rather than being restricted to one mine.In addition, as a ‘guest’ on a mine site, mining contractors do not have the luxury of creating the environment for their preferred systems, rather they must have the capacity to adapt their technology to suit the offered environment at a particular mine. This leads to a pursuit of adaptive technologies that can be implemented selectively and seamlessly without excessive disturbance rather than ‘all-of-mine’ systems. These incremental innovations then become available for use across the mining industry where they can add value as ‘bolt-on systems’ to existing operations.Mining contractors, therefore, act as the bellwether for industry practices and equipment. However, in order to maintain their position they must engage industry stakeholders to deliver practical, innovative and cost-effective technologies that add value and result in an improved bottom line for all. Mine and facility closure planning is a dynamic and rapidly evolving landscape. In this landscape, mining companies and industry consultants are generally good at estimating the associated earthworks and rehabilitation costs, because it is æcore businessÆ. Through our extensive work in mine closure, we have found that the safe and cost-effective demolition of mining related infrastructure is often grossly underestimated. Or alternately, it is simply assumed that the returns on scrap steel and the sale of re-usable plant will cover the related costs. With fluctuating steel prices and no guaranteed buyer for the assets, the estimated monetary return is often unreliable and in many cases unrealistic. On this basis this logic is fundamentally flawed. We have found that on most occasions this has meant that closure cost estimates fall well short of what the actual costs are to close the mine.GSSE and Liberty Industrial have worked on over 60 mine closure projects in Australia and overseas of varying scales and across a range of commodity types. An evaluation of these projects has shown that costs associated with the safe demolition and removal of a mining related infrastructure is in the order of 20 - 30 per cent of the total cost at closure. We believe it is one of the top three risk areas associated with mine closure planning and cost estimation, alongside bulk earthworks and the capping of tailings and waste rock storage facilities.Our paper uses examples from recent projects to demonstrate all aspects outlined above. We have also endeavoured to address the following key points related to the demolition and removal of mining related infrastructure:If companies fail to plan appropriately, complicating factors such as contamination, hazardous materials, mobilisation/demobilisation, geographical location, decommissioning standards, site constraints and weather, can add considerable costs to the project and result in variations for the demolition contractor.Closure planning often assumes infrastructure that is no longer required can be utilised by a third party and/or the new land holder. The iron and steel industry is experiencing an increase in the use of iron and steel commodities within societies, decarbonisation pressures, depletion of high iron ore grades and high energy consumption. This necessitates scrap metal recycling, low-grade ore utilisation using the induction or electric arc furnace to achieve the global target of net zero CO2 emission. The available highquality scrap metal cannot sustain the steel industry but the world has unused hematite-goethite ores. It is the aim of this research that this resource be utilised using the induction furnace to sustain the steel industry in an environmentally friendly manner. Indurated pellets prepared from the hematite-goethite ore, 5 wt per cent limestone and 5 wt per cent coal addition were smelted in the induction furnace at 1350 ± 50°C with 25 mins holding time. The effects of basicity and carbon content were also investigated to optimise the smelting parameters. The results showed that the careful control of the basicity, and iron-to-carbon ratio maximised total metal recovery. The optimal basicity ratio was determined to be 1.3 and a carbon to iron ratio of 1.4 achieved a total metal recovery of 73 per cent. The metal recovery was closely related to the estimated slag melting temperature. The basicity ratio of 1.3 achieved the lowest slag melting temperature estimated to be around 1380°C based on the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 phase diagram. The recovered metal had a comparable chemical composition and microstructure to that products from an ITmk3 furnace.

Specific recommendations for the design of local content policies to mitigate social, economic and governance risks are developed. The document then offers some recommendations regarding the role of partners in design, implementation, monitoring, and enforcement of local content policies.

"The pressures on mine operators are varied and constantly increasing, declining ore grades, more remote locations and increasing environmental concerns. The challenge facing the mining industry is to find new ways to process ores which are more efficient and less costly and to control them better. This requires a fundamental rethink in the way in which projects are developed, it is no longer good enough to just copy what has been done before. The process starts with the surfacing of the primary underlying constraints for the project and the establishment of new design principles to address these. The generation of new design criteria and processing options follows the well-established path of brainstorm, focus, brainstorm, refocus and economic evaluation. The aim is process intensification, doing more with less, as early as possible and better use of plant data. The methodology requires a complete geometallurgical understanding of the orebody to facilitate the evaluation of viable processing options. Examples of early stage processing considered are blast optimization and ore sorting to reject waste and reduce processing costs. Mine to mill integration, which starts with the optimization of blasting for separation, offers another way to significantly reduce operating costs and increase efficiencies.VALUE MODEL The mining industry has, over the past decade, experienced an unprecedented cycle of increased commodity prices and investments in new mining and processing capacity followed by a market collapse and fall in prices and confidence. Whilst there are now some signs of a return to investment in new capacity, the metals and mining industry is still wrestling with eroding margins and investor demand that companies achieve the full value of their assets. Metals and mining companies must work on all available levers to deflate their costs back to more manageable levels and capture the full value for their products. Levers include optimizing external spending, re-thinking make vs buy trade-offs, debottlenecking, improving availability and operating time of key equipment, more accurate and agile planning processes, value-in-use optimization, and tighter performance management. Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation of a company’s value model. The three goals of a successful mining enterprise are social acceptance, environmental acceptance and sound financial returns to shareholders. Some of the KPI’s used to measure the success or not of achieving these goals are shown in the translation layer."

Much has been written about the fact that most transformation efforts disappoint. This paper addresses factors that should be taken into consideration in planning and implementing transformation programs to ensure success.In 2009, St Barbara commenced a transformation program to address issues of chronic poor quarterly operational performance; financial pressure caused by the unreliable operational performance; and an inability to develop business plans with integrity and to reliably deliver on the plans. As a result of a number of years of disappointing operational performance, St BarbaraÆs culture was not conducive to business success.This paper uses lessons learnt during St BarbaraÆs transformation program to highlight key characteristics of change programs that can generate significant sustainable benefits. While there were many benefits from the transformation program, the most significant impacts of St BarbaraÆs program have been transformation of the companyÆs culture and capability of people as business leaders; the establishment of a business systems framework to guide the design and development of systems; and developing support functions, for example centralised procurement and supply chain, business improvement and technical services.CITATION:Campbell-Cowan, G, 2012. ALTHOUGH the zinc and pyrite concentrates produced at Midvale go to other companies, the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company smelts and refines its own lead. Refining is the first step of the process that is done at some distance from the mining operations, the plant being at East Chicago, Ind., an industrial center about 25 miles southeast of Chicago. For years it has been notable as being the only lead refinery in the country using the Betts electrolytic process. The original buildings, many of which are still in use, were erected in 1906 when the plant was known as the United States Metals Refining Co. In 1920 the parent company sold its copper refinery at Chrome, N. J., and since the copper refinery was also known as the U. S.

The Bureau of Mines studied available information on the nature and occurrence of potential sources of aluminum in the United States, its Pacific island possessions, and Puerto Rico to obtain data for use in evaluating the production capability and costs of extracting the aluminum from such materials. The quantity, type, and grade of the materials range from 4 billion tons of bauxite, bauxitic clay, and kaolin averaging 33 to 42 percent Al2O3 to nearly 600 billion tons of anorthosite containing only 27 percent Al2O3. Principal deposits of bauxite, bauxitic clay, and kaolin occur in Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, and Oregon. Major anorthosite deposits are located in New York, Wyoming, California, Idaho, and Montana. About 11 billion tons of material in deposits of various types of clay, the kyanite group of minerals, laterites, and shales averaging 27 to 30 percent Al2O3 comprise additional resource's from which aluminum some day may be extracted. Material meeting specifications of the study was found in only 22 States and the Pacific island possessions. Utilization of these large low-grade sources of aluminum awaits development of processes that are economically competitive with the Bayer process for extracting alumina from baxuite, which is at present the only commercial ore of aluminum. Changes in economic and political conditions also may play important roles in the eventual development of the potential sources of aluminum.
