Minerals have been critical to human society from the earliest and their use has been intertwined with the development of civilization. In the Western World, the mining, processing and extractive metallurgy associated with ores was first described in detail by Agricola in the 16th century. He considered these collective activities to be the most necessary and the most profitable of professions, and wrote, "without doubt, none of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of the metals is not less ancient; in fact they are at least equal and coeval, for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. In truth, in all works of agriculture, as in the other arts, implements are used which are made from metals, or which could not be made without the use of metals; for this reason the metals are of the greatest necessity to man." Ours is still a materials-dependent society that relies heavily on minerals for raw materials. Today our dependence on minerals is exceptionally great. To meet the need for fuel and non-fuel minerals in a representative year, in the United States alone, about one billion tons of coal and 2.7 billion tons of ore are mined. These mineral products are essential for fertilizers, for construction materials, metals and alloys, for manufacturing household and industrial items, for transportation, and for the generation of electric power. It is instructive to consider the diversity of uses found in our society for a single mineral product - silver, for example. Experts believe that in the past 5000 years we have mined about a million tons, or 31.9 billion troy ounces of silver. In 1988, 133 million troy ounces of silver were used in the Unites States. Most of the silver used was for techno- logical, medicinal and industrial purposes, Table 1. X-ray films, for example, carry comparatively large amounts of silver to lessen patient's radiation exposure. Silver does not prevent tooth decay, but each year about two million troy ounces of silver is used for dental work in the United States. In small quantities it is used in medicine. No metal - not even copper conducts heat and electricity so efficiently as silver. Silver wires lace solar cells, and silver oxide batteries power hearing aids, calculators, submarines and satellites. Hardened with tungsten or molybdenum, miniature discs of silver pass current from wire to wire in cars, telephones and computers. A dish- washer timer alone may have 50 such electrical contacts, which open and close without excessive heat or friction. Silver is an important component of solar reflectors, since no other material reflects light so well or uniformly. In our personal lives, silver remains in high esteem to adorn our tables, provide precious objects and jewelry. In many parts of the world, silver in the form of coins, jewelry and bullion is used for financial independence and security against the vagaries of paper currency. In India, silver is used in its purest form as thin foils to decorate sweets and other edibles. It is obvious that this mineral product, silver, is of great value and utility in our society. Minerals and Environment The benefits of minerals do not come without problems. Much of the silver, for example, lies locked up in copper, lead-zinc or precious metal ores; to extract it creates vast quantities of waste material. On the average, in order to recover one ounce of silver about a quarter ton of ore must be mined. To meet the world's annual demand for silver, approximately 100 million tons of waste is generated every Year. The problem with silver is repeated with all minerals. Conversion of mineral ores into usable materials necessitates the generation of large quantities of waste products that create tremendous disposal problems. In addition to waste material discarded during mining, wastes may be generated during processing as gases, liquids or solids that must be subsequently converted into forms more acceptable for disposal. Associated with the handling, treatment and management of waste products are a number of environmental problems. Environmental problems are not new to the minerals industry. Progressive improvements in crusher design, screening efficiency, and operating experience along with the downsizing of many taconite operations has resulted in the abilitv of some crushing plants to produce a substantially finer product. This finer product opens the possibility of replacing the rods in the rod mill with balls as is the current practice at Sydvaranger, Norway. If this replacement could be accomplished substantial savings associated with metal wear and the elimination of rod charging may be realized. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of a mill charged with rods with the performance of the same mill charged with balls at the pilot scale. The first objective was to establish whether we could achieve the same throughput rate at the same mesh-of-grind in a mill in which the rod media has been replaced by balls. The second point was to determine whether the ball media would create a significant tramp oversize problem.

The National Economic Viewpoint? Any substantial project undertaken by private enterprise would normally be subjected to a Discounted Cash Flow analysis of its commercial viability, and would proceed only if the rate of return was judged satisfactory. A 'national viewpoint' analysis attempts to do the same but from the viewpoint of the community as a whole. The objective is to ensure that those projects are undertaken which yield the best return, economic and social, to the nation as a whole.

If it does, frontal displace- ment occurs in the laboratory experiments, and oil INTRODUCTION Thc puposes of this paper are to present theoretical and experimental evidence for occurrence of macroscopic instabilities in displacement of one viscous fluid by another immiscible with it through a uniform porous medium and to compare available experimental data with some predictions of a theory of instability developed by the first author. The instabilities are referred to as macroscopic in the sense that spatially quasi-sinusoidal, growing fingers of the displacing liquid are formed, the width and peak-to-peak separation (wavelength) of which is large relative to a characteristic length of the particular permeable medium such as grain size. Visual models of two kinds have been used to obtain observations: displacement of oil by water-glycerine solutions through the flow channel formed by closely spaced parallel plates and displacement of oil by water with and without initial interstitial water through unconsolidated glass powder packs, employing the technique of matching indices of refraction. In all cases we have observed macroscopic instabilities or fingers under conditions predicted by the theory to be favorable for their occurrence. The phenomenon discussed here is not the production of streamers due to gross inhomogeneities such as permeability stratification of the porous medium. It is our object to show, on the contrary, that a quantitative prediction of finger spacing is possible in a porous medium known to be macroscopically homogeneous and isotropic throughout. The importance of the phenomenon in its influence on the configuration of oil and water with respect to oil production behavior was noted earlier by Engel-berts and Klinkenberg' who coined the term "viscous fingering". Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines û mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental û as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies û and hence no two development projects û are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource projectÆs development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as ædoing a feasibility studyÆ. But the principal purpose of a æfeasibility studyÆ is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant û they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a projectÆs viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of æfeasibility studiesÆ and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

Keywords: FC mold, Argon, Magnetic, Solidification Fluid flow plays a significant role for steel surface quality in continuous casting. Although water models are able to model fluid flow, the flow pattern is not of practical interest since the moving solidifying shell cannot be accounted. Computer modeling has become a popular and dependable tool to analyze the complex phenomena occurring in continuous casting. In this numerical simulation we coupled momentum and energy equations considering the solidification of steel along with turbulence ?-e model. The vertical bending mold is equipped with bifurcated nozzle with 15 degrees of port angle. FC mold is supplied with DC induced magnetic fields. Influence of argon and magnetic fields on molten steel flow and heat transfer is investigated by solving momentum equations adding source terms due to multiphase ? magneto hydrodynamics. The results show that magnetic fields reduce the jet velocity from port by lower magnetic core induced field but the influence on meniscus velocity is complex to describe. Magnetic fields increase surface temperature and homogenize its distribution on surface and inside a mold.

Large quantities of explosives are consumed in the underground mining of ores in the Lake Superior district. Because of the recognized danger of accidentally releasing the potential highly destructive forces contained, the safes possible procedure in the transportation, storage, and use of explosives is necessary. Underground magazines recently constructed in the district give evidence of the earnest desire of the mine operators to incorporate all possible safe-guards in the storage of explosives, including a careful choice of location and arrangement in the plan of the magazine.

THE solid nonmetallic inclusions present to some extent in all commercial steels have been variously designated. In early references they were usually called slag inclusions, and this terminology is still retained to some extent. On the premise that all nonmetallic matter produced in a metallurgical process is slag, this can be justified. We have come to think of slag, however, in a more restricted sense, and calling these particles slag inclusions is further objectionable because it fosters the erroneous concept that they are actually incorporated portions of furnace slag. Rarely is this true. The term sonims (coined from solid nonmetallic impurities) was proposed many years ago but never came into common use. In general, the term non-metallic inclusions seems to be satisfactory and adequate. NATURE AND CONS1lTUTION OF NONMETALLIC INCLUSIONS From the standpoint of origin, inclusions fall naturally into two classes: (1) those occurring as a result of reactions taking place in the body of molten or solidifying metal and (2) those resulting from mechanical incorporation of refractories or other materials with which molten steel comes in contact. The former are by far the more numerous and have been called indigenous, natural, or native inclusions. The latter are by their very nature sporadic in occurrence and have been called exogenous, accidental, adventitious, or foreign inclusions. They are often referred to as the "slag-stringer" type, though here also the material is not likely to be furnace slag. Substances Found in Inclusions. Nonmetallic inclusions are composed principally of oxides and sulfides but carbides and nitrides sometimes play an important role. In the case of indigenous inclusions the reactions by which these particles are precipitated from molten or solidifying steel may be caused by: (1) oxidation such as may occur during refining or during tapping and teeming, (2) deoxidation by added alloys, (3) change

The impact of the work of Herty "et al" on modern liquid steel technology can only be evaluated by first setting the stage as it existed in 1926. It is important to briefly review not only the steel making process and viewpoints regarding methods of refining, but also to describe the tools which were available for research at the time. One must recall that only 15 years before the beginning of this program, the open hearth production exceeded that of the Bessemer in the United States. Many open hearths were still operating on producer gas (a very inefficient fuel), although some plants were converting to the use of natural gas and very few to oil. Continuous rolling of wide strip started this year. The Faraday Society in England held a World Conference on Physical Chemistry in Steel Making in 1925 and the contributions to this work created considerable interest throughout the world and it appeared that physical chemistry might convert the art of steel making into a science. These papers, however, attempted to solve the problems through the use of the older physical chemical concepts such as Nernst's numbers, etc. and considerable data were missing. In 1923, Lewis and Randall had published their book Thermodynanzicsl and this was later to establish and standardize the steps which are now accepted for the calculation of physico-chemical equations. At the time this research work was started, there were no small high frequency induction furnaces. Only a few complex real options can be valued using closed-form equations, such as the Black and Scholes formula, because these algorithms are restrictive and prevent the construction of practical project evaluation models. Although a binomial lattice method paired with the ærisk-neutral probabilityÆ provides an easier and flexible modelling of exploration and mining projects, it has limitations when projects are complex, long-lived and influenced by the interplay of various market and private uncertainties. In order to overcome these limitations, modern decision tree software using dynamic programming capability can be used for real option valuations. This is a powerful computational tool in which the impact of various sources of uncertainties can be differentiated, so that the optimal decision path can be explicitly displayed visually. There has been significant academic controversy surrounding whether different real option (RO) valuation methods would lead to different real option values (ROV). This paper, using a realistic copper mining example, demonstrates that as long as the same degree of subjectivity and consistency are used in different real option valuation methods, they yield the same result. This conclusion is valid irrespective of whether the cash flow volatility generated by various sources of uncertainties is handled in an aggregated or in an explicit and differentiated manner. This paper compares two choices for an investor either to æbuy now and developÆ a project or to enter into a ætwo-year option to purchaseÆ after the proponents have developed it. It also shows how significantly different net after-tax operating cash flows may be generated by these different choices on the same underlying asset represented by the project. This is due to the difference in the amount and timing of the relevant capital investments affecting the depreciation and amortisation charges and as a consequence, the income tax paid. Empirical models used for predicting the performance of screens on the basis of capacity, cut size, water split and grade efficiency curves were evaluated. This paper reports experimental results obtained with single-deck Derrick screens. The performance of the screen was tested with limestone in a separate screen set-up, in a pilot plant and in industrial scale test runs. The results of pilot plant experiments showed that the measured water split was higher than the measured bypass. This is an indication to that water flow does not entrain the same proportion of all fine particles present in the feed which is advantageous for screening. The experimental design for the industrial test runs was made on the basis of the pilot plant tests. Suitability of the existing models has been checked and accuracy compared. The tests showed that best grade efficiency model was the Rosin-Rammler model. An empirical model for the evaluation of the model parameters as a function of pulp density of the feed and the load of the screen is suggested.

Based on the pre-works, this paper proposed a new short stage process of the intensify aluminothermy reduction by the stage to prepare high titanium ferroalloy with low O and Al contents. We investigated the effects of Al and Ca and Si combination reduction agent, slag type and step-up reduction conditions on the Al content and distribution in the alloy. The results show that the step-up reduction can not only reduce effectively the oxygen content in the alloy, but also reduce effectively Al content. For instance, the oxygen content in high titanium ferroalloy is within 1%~4%, and the Al content is within 1%~5%. Its quality reaches the requirement of high titanium ferroalloy prepared by remelting process.

Many reports and papers have been delivered on projects under construction or already in operation, but we believe there are few that have been written about projects yet to be built specifically dealing with advanced mine and environmental planning. This paper describes such planning for Atlantic Richfield Company's Black Thunder mine. Project planning is a cyclic phenomenom involving four broadly overlapping planning steps (Figure 1). The demands of the public include needs that can be satisfied through planned resource development. Using a base of information that partly exists and must in part be gathered and updated, the preplanned development can be, evaluated. The evaluation process, with built-in environmental constraints leads to an implementation procedure. Implementation results in the development, including the release of the affected area to other public demands that follow.

The Bureau of Mines has sponsored a comprehensive research program to enhance the safe, effective, and efficient use of blasting technology by the mining industry. Recent research results of the surface mine blasting program were presented at a seminar on April 25, 1987, in Chicago, IL. Many of the topics discussed at the seminar are presented in this proceedings. The new research described in these papers includes computer monitoring of rock motion, the influence of blast delay times on rock fragmentation, blasting effects on Appalachian water wells, blast vibration measurement near structures, and the reduction of accidents through improved blasting safety.

"A need exists for fast and accurate analysis of species in various phases at elevated temperatures. Although modern analytical techniques are very efficient, the equipment is usually situated some distance from the industrial operation and time is spent taking the sample and sending it to the analytical facility. Several minutes can easily lapse and, during this time, heat must be supplied in order to keep the system molten and, if the composition is changing rapidly due to a refining process or reaction with the environment, the information may only be of retrospective use. Perhaps more important reasons for the use of on-line sensors are that instantaneous analysis gives better control, process optimisation and the minimisation of energy losses and pollution. To date oxygen has been the only element which is measured widely using solid electrolytes. However, the analysis of many more elements is required and possible electrolytes for other species are discussed. For some elements, ~here is no suitable conducting electrolyte and, therefore, a different approach is adopted where the electrolyte, in which one species is mobile, comes to equilibrium with another species. IntroductionThere is an ever increasing demand for the development of sensors for on-line measurements in most areas of technology and, in particular, metal processing. This is especially relevant in situations where greater control can be achieved by monitoring the chemical composition of the melt during processing and where a minor constituent in the melt can have a major effect on the properties of the finished alloy. Although modern analytical techniques are fast and reliable, the equipment due to its complexity, is frequently situated away from the process area and valuable time may be spent in sampling and transportation. During this period, heat may have to be supplied to prevent solidification and the refining reactions may be continuing, and, therefore, the analytical information may not be of direct use."

The year 1988 unexpectedly turned out to be a good year for the US coal industry. In fact, it was a third consecutive year of record coal production. Accord¬ing to preliminary Energy Information Administration data for 1988, domestic coal consumption went up 5%, or 41 Mt (45 million st), from 1987. Coal exports were up by a surprising 13.6 Mt (15 million st). In 1988, 22.7 Mt (25 million st) of coal were drawn from stockpiles for consumption. Even so, US coal production increased to 862 Mt (950 million st). That was up 28 Mt (31 million st) from 1987. While coal consumption, exports, and production were up, delivered prices for steam coal continued to slide during the year. Metallurgical coal prices, however, firmed up and showed a moderate increase. This reflected tight metallurgical coal markets at home and abroad. Coal consumption US coal consumption reached 800 Mt (882 million st), compared with 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Increased metallurgical coal consumption was one factor. Most of the rise in coal consumption, however, was due to unexpectedly high electricity demand. Unseasonably hot summer weather al lowed added coal-fired electric generation to supplement the drought-related reduction in hydro-electric power supply. Electric utilities consumed 687 Mt (757 million st) of coal in 1988, 35.4 Mt (39 million st) more than in 1987. Coal-fired power plants remained the primary source of US electricity generation, providing 57% of the total in 1988. Coal consumption at coke plants increased 13%, to 38 Mt (42 million st), from the level consumed in 1987. This increase reflects the recent recovery in the iron and steel industry. Metallurgical coal consumption in 1988 could have been greater. But US coke plants reportedly reached their maximum practical production capacity. As a result, net US coke imports amounted to 1.45 Mt (1.6 million st). Despite increased industrial activities, steam coal consumption by industrial plants was up only slightly from the 1987 level, amounting to 69 Mt (76 million st) in 1988. Residential and commercial coal consumption remained virtually unchanged at 6.4 Mt (7 million st). Coal exports and imports US coal exports rebounded in 1988, reaching 86 Mt (95 million st). It was the highest level of annual US coal exports since 1982, when they reached 96 Mt (106 million st). An unusual set of factors led to an opening for US coal exporters in 1988: • a high level of industrial production in Japan and the European Economic Community, • supply disruptions due to labor problems at coal mines in Poland and Australia, • a drought-related reduction in hydro-electric power generation in Canada, requiring increased coal-fired generation, • China's problems in meeting its export commitments, and • a fall in the value of the US dollar. US metallurgical coal exports in 1988 amounted to 56 Mt (62 million st), 9.1 Mt (10 million st) more than the 1987 level. Europe, Japan, and Canada were the principal importers of US metallurgical coal in 1988. European countries, in particu¬lar, increased their take by one-third of US metallurgical coal. The labor problems in Poland and Australia contributed to these higher levels of imports. So did increases in pig iron production of 8% in Japan and 9% in the European Economic Community. US steam coal exports - including bituminous, anthracite, and lignite-increase to 30 Mt (33 million st). This was up from 25.4 Mt (28 million st) in 1987 Contributing to this overall rise were 1.8-Mt (2-million st) increase in shipments to Canada and a 2.7-Mt (3-million st) increase to Europe. Unaffected by the somewhat tighter world coal market, US coal imports showed a slight increase to 1.8 Mt (million st) in 1988. Colombia continue to be the leading exporter to the United States, followed by Canada and Venezuela. Venezuela's entry into the US market is a relatively recent one, having made its first significant shipment in the fourth quarter of 1987.

Selective-reductive leaching of manganese from low-grade manganese ore using tannic acid as a reductant in acidic media was demonstrated by XRD, SEM-EDX characterization, and batch leaching studies at room temperature. The pH change in the liquid phase before and after leaching revealed that selectivity of manganese over iron was due to the hydrolysis of iron. The acidity in the liquid phase during leaching was dictated by two mechanisms: proton-consuming reaction (manganese oxide reduction by tannic acid) and proton-producing reaction (ferric ion reduction by tannic acid to produce ferrous ion). Based on the leaching studies, the more prevalent reaction between these two was determined by initial leaching conditions: tannic acid concentration, sulfuric acid concentration, liquid-solid ratio, temperatures, and agitation time.
