Early solvent extraction circuits in the uranium industry utilized bona fide kerosenes as diluents for extractant chemicals. These kerosenes were used successfully in the uranium industry; however, at least one plant was destroyed by fire resulting from the use of a low flash point kerosene. Although the term "kerosene" is used throughout the solvent extraction industry, the authors have been unable to find any use of kerosene in copper solvent extraction circuits. A term that is occasionally used with reference to diluents is "metallurgical kerosene." Such a term is unrecognizable in the petroleum industry. Kerosene [or kerosine] is a flammable hydrocarbon mixture that is less volatile than gasoline. It is produced for combustion purposes and may have variable compositions of organic compounds including alkanes, alkenes, alkines, and aromatics. Diluents are constant composition hydrocarbon mixtures developed specifically for use in solvent extraction processes. These products usually have much lower vapor pressures and higher flash points than kerosene. In solvent extraction systems, they typically comprise 70 to 95 v/o percent of the circuit organic. The primary purpose of the diluent is to adjust the extractant concentration to the working range of the operation. The diluent and extractant must be completely soluble or miscible with each other. Secondary diluent effects are to promote transfer kinetics, optimize phase disengagement, and minimize both organic in aqueous and aqueous in organic entrainment.

"Geometallurgy aims to improve resource efficiency by creating a spatial model of an orebody in order to forecast ore processing behaviour. This enables calculation of the economic value of each ore block and the use of this information for production optimisation and hence an improved economic return. Modelling uses different approaches to link geological information with mineral processing: traditional approach uses chemical elements; proxy approach – small-scale geometallurgical tests; and mineralogical approach – minerals.A geometallurgical model is obtained during execution of a geometallurgical program encompassing the entire value chain of ore processing. Available methods for establishing a geometallurgical model are in many cases limited and not yet comprehensively validated. Some of the limitations include: sampling density, assaying methods and quality, forecast accuracy block model content, geostatistical solutions for non-additive components, blending and assessment of positive impact of geometallurgy on the project. Synthetic ore models combined with process simulations and production scheduling, based on strong case studies, present a viable way to address these shortcomings. Such synthetic ore models will have realistic elemental and mineral distribution, textural attributes and 3D variability for input into the design of an appropriate geometallurgical program.A synthetic orebody was created for an apatite-bearing iron deposit. Variability in modal mineralogy was described by geostatistical parameters combined by a set of linear and trigonometric functions. The generated synthetic deposit model was used to develop a mine production plan to generate a simulated process feed. The process feed had detailed information required for beneficiation process simulation: modal mineralogy, chemical composition of minerals, grain size and specific gravity. The synthetic system was used to measure benefits that a geometallurgical program developed for real cases could provide, compared to production where only head grade is optimised. This Bureau of Mines report compares the availability of federally owned minerals in Arizona with lands considered favorable for discovery of mineral resources, to deter-mine the extent to which Federal mineral lands in such areas have been withdrawn by legal action or restricted by management practice. Of particular concern are restraints on Federal lands in areas identified as highly favorable for occurrences of valuable mineral deposits. Excluding Indian lands held in trust by the Federal Government, about 32 million acres, 44%, of Arizona's mineral estate is federally owned. This total includes lands with partial Federal mineral ownership. Approximately 16.5 million acres, or 52% of these lands, are available for location or lease. This includes 496,000 acres, 62%, of the lands highly favorable, and 2.6 million acres, 57%, of the lands moderately favorable for locatable minerals in Arizona. All other Federal mineral lands are either withdrawn or restricted, reflecting a wide range of purpose, authority, and impacts on mineral exploration and development.

A study was made of the instrumentation and technique of atomic absorption spectroscopy developed by Walsh of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (C.S.I.R.O.), Australia.The method was evaluated for the determination of silver in lead sulphide concentrate. The precision of the procedure developed is equal to that of the uncorrected fire assay method and the accuracy is greater.Brief mention is made of the use of this technique for the determination of silver and other elements in ores and concentrator products.INTRODUCTIONThe fire assay method, although accepted on a world-wide basis as the umpire method for the determination of silver in ores and concentrates, is freely recognized as yielding results which are lower than actual due to unavoidable losses.King (1934) investigated the influence of the cupelshape, size and material on silver losses during cupellation. Using 100 mg silver prills he recorded silver losses ranging between l. and 10 per cent under extreme conditions and averaging approximately 2 percent under conditions which might be considered normal. Guerin (1957) made a detailed study, under carefully controlled conditions in a furnace similar to that described by Esdaile (1952), of the effect of temperature on silver losses during cupellation. Today the world is heavily dependent on petroleum for its energy. In the United States, over 75% of the primary energy used comes from petroleum. Other developed countries are similar. The less developed countries have a lower dependence on petroleum just as the United States did through the early 20th Century. However, these less-developed countries look upon petroleum as one of the primary energy sources for the economic growth required to improve their standard of living. So everyone considers petroleum an essential ingredient in the recipe for the good life. But there is a substantial problem with this recipe, and it is finally getting general recognition. Petroleum is a finite resource, and the world is using it up at a rapid, accelerating rate. Though it won't be exhausted for many decades, the early warnings of ultimate limits have already appeared. The suppliers of the incremental production in the Middle East have threatened to restrict increases in their production rates. And, of course, the short term embargo of four years ago clearly demonstrated the economic impact of reduced access to petroleum as a primary source of energy. World petroleum production will probably peak in. 10 to 15 years and then start declining. When that happens, economics--the allocation of scarce products (also known as the dismal science for obvious reasons)--indicates that the price of petroleum will escalate in real terms. So that's the situation today. We have a serious and growing problem facing us that could substantially alter the quality of our life over the next 25 years. Recognition that the society may face a period of lowered expectations after a long period of upward mobility will be a painful experience, but it is certainly not the moral equivalent of war. And, besides, we have time to take positive actions to avert the most serious consequences. When we consider alternate energy sources, the possibilities are almost endless: coal, oil shale, tar sands, solar, fission, fusion, wind, tides, biomass, etc. Actually, the list is endless because new possibilities are continually being proposed. Of these possibilities, coal uniquely stands out as an attractive substitute for petroleum. Coal can be, and is, burned to generate electricity and provide heat. It can be liquefied to supplement the liquid fuels from petroleum, and it can be gasified for use as synthetic natural gas. Unlike exotic alternate energy such as solar and fusion, coal has successfully been used commercially to produce synthetic fuels. But, the technology does need to be refined and modernized. Thus, coal's role is not to be "America's Ace in the Hole," but to bridge the transition from primary dependence on petroleum for energy to the utopia of renewable sources of energy. But don't be mislead by the prophets--those renewable sources of energy are going to be very, very expensive when they are invented.

IGO Ltd’s (IGO) Nova Operation (Nova) is 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA). Discovered by Sirius Resources NL (Sirius) in 2012 and acquired by IGO in 2015, the Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger) occurs within the Fraser Zone of the AlbanyFraser Orogen. Nova-Bollinger is a complex nickel-copper-cobalt (Ni-Cu-Co) magmatic intrusive sulfide deposit, which is characterised by high-grade folded and undulating breccia lodes that host the bulk of the payable metals. Significant sulfide mineralisation is also found in several magmatic intrusive styles including net-textured, disseminated and blebby styles. A smaller but material volume of sulfides has also been remobilised into the deposit’s footwall rocks as ‘stringer’ bands in metasediments, or as discrete massive sulfide lenses. When interpolating Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) block grades in the presence of locally varying grade connectivity trends, such as folds or undulations, the sample search neighbourhood, which is used to identify the composites subset that is used for each block estimate, should be oriented to match the local trends. In theory, the most robust method of estimation where locally varying angles (LVAs) are applied to search neighbourhoods, are techniques where the composites and the blocks to be estimated are transformed to an unfolded coordinate system (UCS). However, UCS methods can be tedious to implement and require subjective decisions to be made that cannot always be fully defended. An alternative LVA method commonly used in the industry is dynamic anisotropy (DA), which is much simpler to implement and is often assumed (but not that often demonstrated) to result in similar results to UCS-style estimation. In 2018, Nova’s Mine Geology team (MGT) estimated the grades and density of the Nova-Bollinger MRE using the UCS approach. For the 2020 MRE update, Nova’s MGT tested and compared the USC grade interpolation method with the DA approach. As applied to the Nova-Bollinger’s 2020 MRE, the comparison, advantages and disadvantages of the two estimation methods are the subject of this paper

THE solid nonmetallic inclusions that are present to some extent in all commercial steels have been variously designated. In early references they were usually called slag inclusions, and. this terminology is still retained to some extent. On the premise that all nonmetallic matter produced in a metallurgical process is slag, this can be justified. We have come to think of slag, however, in a more restricted sense, and calling these particles slag inclusions is further objectionable because it fosters the erroneous concept that they are actually incorporated portions of furnace slag. Rarely is this true. The term sonims (coined from solid nonmetallic impurities) was proposed many years ago but never came into common use. In general the term "nonmetallic inclusions" seems to be satisfactory and adequate. NATURE AND CONSTITUTION OF NONMETALLIC INCLUSIONS From the standpoint of origin, inclusions fall naturally into two classes: (1) those that occur as a result of reactions taking place in the body of the molten or solidifying metal and (2) those that result from the mechanical incorporation of refractories or other materials with which the steel comes in contact. The former are by far the more numerous and have been called indigenous, natural, or native inclusions. The latter are by their very nature sporadic in occurrence and have been called exogenous, accidental, adventitious, or foreign inclusions. They are often referred to as the "slag stringer" type, though here also the material is not likely to be furnace slag. Substances Found in Inclusions. Nonmetallic inclusions are composed principally of oxides and sulphidea but carbides and nitrides sometimes play an important role. In the case of indigenous inclusions the reactions by which these particles are precipitated from the molten or solidifying steel may be caused by (1) oxidation such as may occur during refining or during tapping and teeming, (2) deoxidation by added alloys, (3) change in equilibrium constants as the steel cools to the freezing temperature, (4) decreased solubility with lower

The underground mining evolution for block cave mines in Chile and worldwide has made important strides in the last decades. Nonetheless, reserves determination in the initial stages of these types of projects—mainly for long-term planning—is not studied in as much detail as it should be, especially regarding the impact on the final value of the enterprise. Today, the first estimation of the size of a block cave mine, typically expressed in tons, tends to determine very large footprints and ore bodies. The resulting large-scale mine is obtained by applying the marginal cut-off grade (COG) to determine reserves. Yet, in many cases, it is possible to obtain an equal or higher benefit, extracting fewer reserves in less time, with a smaller active area, which significantly reduces the project’s uncertainty. To explore scenarios obtained by applying a higher marginal COG in the initial phases of the project, the Hill of Value methodology is used to estimate the net present value (NPV) in relation to the production rate and the COG. However, the application of this methodology considers certain simplifications that generate results which are not completely satisfactory in specific cases. This paper suggests an improvement of this method to obtain more reliable results regarding determination of a COG profile that will optimize the NPVof a block-cave project. The methodology was developed and applied in a massive polymetallic deposit with zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, corresponding to a real block caving project. The methodology provides NPV results that differ by approximately 15% in comparison to the real mine plan, while also being considerably simpler and faster to calculate. In summary, the proposed methodology provides a reasonable and fast procedure to estimate higher than marginal COG that increases the NPV of block cave mine projects.

"The adoption of a significant pile testing regime, the use of Eurocode 7 as the design standard, the development of lean construction techniques, and lateral thinking in overcoming some considerable construction challenges allowed Stent Foundations to construct the foundations for the new Wembley Stadium, London, on time and within budget. In addition to the piling works for the main stadium, and after significant design development, a large number of extra piles were required to raise the new iconic roof Arch to its final position some 133 metres above the ground. A 1,400m long contiguous bored pile wall was also constructed to allow for excavation and formation of the new pitch. As long ago as the 1880's, Wembley Park leisure grounds had football pitches and running tracks.In 1918 the British Government began planning a British Empire Exhibition with a stadium as its centrepiece. The Exhibition area covered 219 acres and the area on which a former abandoned tower called Watkins Folly had stood was chosen as the site for the new stadium (http://www.wembleystadium.com).The Empire Stadium, as it was originally known, was designed by architects Sir John Simpson and Maxwell Ayerton and the engineer Sir Owen Williams. It took just 300 days to complete at a cost of £750,000 ($1.4m), and was built using 25,000 tons of ferro concrete, 1,000 tons of steel, and over half a million rivets.The Empire Exhibition was a remarkable event, containing fountains, lakes, gardens, and many pavilions, each representing the architectural style of the countries exhibiting. It was opened on 23rd April 1924 and the final attendance was over 27 million, with 4.5 million admissions to the Empire Stadium alone."

This paper is a retrospective on the development, application, and enhancement of the LaModel program from a personal perspective. The narrative starts with an explanation of the objectives behind the original development of the program and then introduces some of the unique and very practical features of the program. Next, a demonstration of how LaModel was advantageously used to model stresses and displacements in a multiple-seam mining situation with highly variable topography is presented. This is followed by the details of a number of the major enhancements and expansions of the program over the years. A back-analysis of the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse is then briefly presented, along with the associated development of a recommended calibration procedure for the critical input parameters to LaModel. Finally, some of the present research areas are briefly described, and future enhancements are introduced.

On the supply side we will examine slated brownfield and greenfield expansions including the Norilsk factor and the small to mid-range 'supply creep'. We will also review the cost side of the industry and what to expect going forward. On the demand side, we will discuss the stainless steel and non-stainless demand, the China factor and the stainless steel scrap supply cycle. We will conclude by pinpinting where the market is on the current price cycle, and where we believe the mid-term direction is headed.

The kinetics of atmospheric sulfuric acid leaching from a Brazilian nickel laterite ore was assessed using distinct reducing agents and ore mineralogy. This transitional ore contains 1.63% Ni distributed as 1.27% in coarse size (− 500 + 150 μm), mainly as silicates (lizardite and chlorite—28.6%), and 2.06%in the fines fraction (− 75 μm), mainly as iron oxy-hydroxides (goethite and hematite—49%). The effects of temperature, acid concentration, reducing reagent type, and concentration were evaluated. The − 75 μm fraction limited the leaching efficiency and the use of reducing media with thiosulfate improved leaching and Ni-Fe selectivity. However, at constant Eh of 626–743 mV and a pH range between 0.2 and 1.1, no substantial rise in metals extraction, except for Co and Mn, has been observed. In order to determine the process control at 95 °C, two regions in the extraction curves were used in combination with the shrinking core model. Control by porous diffusion was observed and the kinetic constant was found to be in the order kFe<kNi<kMn<kCo<kMg for atmospheric leaching without Eh control. In reducing media for the first 15 min of leaching, the kinetic constant was found to be kFe<kNi<kMg≅kCo<kMn as derived from Ni disseminated into iron oxides structures.

During this time, improvements have been made in the design and performance of continuous working-level (CWL) detectors. This report discusses the improved designs and some of the operating principles and applications of CWL detectors in the measurement of radon daughter products in mines and dwellings.

Safety was always in the focus of Badische Stahlwerke, however at the same time productivity has to increase as well in order to compete in a tough world market. In 2015 BSW produced over 2.2 Mio tons with two EAFs, leading to tap-to-tap times in average of under 40 minutes. Our philosophy has always been, that our most important success factor are the people: therefore we have to improve the working conditions as much as we can. Starting in 2012 Badische developed a robot that can support this goal. The first step was to use it for temp/sample taking, but the unit had to become a multi-tasker. Only 2 years later the first automated cartridge changer was installed at a customer site in Scandinavia, in late 2015 then the next tool was implement: tool changer allows now to use also a camera to check the condition inside of the heat after tapping. More tools are designed currently and will be implemented shortly. This paper describes the current installations and experiences as future applications.

A geologic study of the Mary Lee Group of coalbeds in the Black Warrior coal basin was undertaken to examine coal stratigraphy and determine regional trends and extent of the coalbeds. The area investigated encompasses 835 square miles in Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa Counties, Ala. More than 700 core logs were used to construct a structure map, coal, interval, and overburden isopachs, and cross sections. There is evidence that structure affected sedimentation. Coalbed isopachs indicate the Mary Lee Group was deposited in fluvial-deltaic and low-lying coastal plain environments. The Mary Lee coalbed is the only coalbed which is continuous throughout the area, commonly with two benches which have a combined thickness of 2 to 12 feet. The Mary Lee coalbed changes rank in the basin from high-through medium-to low-volatile coal. The methane gas potential of the Mary Lee Group coals is estimated to be greater than 1 trillion cubic feet. There is an excellent correlation between the orientation of surface cleats with those measured underground in the Mary Lee coalbed. The face cleats roughly parallel the axes of the area&apos;s folds and trend northeast-southwest.

"INTRODUCTION The mineral found in natural-chromite deposits is never pure Fe0.Cr203, but rather one in which the Fe0 and Cr203 are in part replaced by Mg0 and A1203, respectively. The purest gravity concentrates from many domestic de¬posits consist of a mineral referred to as ""picotite,"" in which this isomorphous replacement is such that the ratio of chromium to iron is low. The Bureau of Nines has investigated methods of chemically beneficiating ores that contain too much iron to be classed as ""high-grade"" chromite 3/ Early investigations 4/ demonstrated that high-iron chromite or picotite ores can be roasted with carbon to obtain selective reduction of the contained iron, and that most of this reduced iron can be removed by acid-leaching the roast products to produce residues of higher chromium-to-iron ratios. tests 5/ indicated that commercially acceptable reaction rates cannot be obtained at roasting temperatures below 1,3000 C., using solid carbon as reducing agent. By this high-temperature reduction and subse¬quent acid-leaching, however, all ores investigated, regardless of the original composition, readily yielded residues considerably better than the minimum specifications for high-grade chromite.In an effort to obtain satisfactory reduction of chromite at lower temperatures, liquid and gaseous seducing agents were tested with varying success. Of the several reducing agents used, methane appeared to be the most promising and was shown to be highly effective at temperatures between 1,000º and 1,100º C., roughly 300º below the roasting temperatures necessary in solid carbon reduction. Further experiments indicated that mixtures of methate with some diluent (hydrogen or other nonoxidizing gas) gave better reduction than did methane alone."

The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude are source located closer to the mill prompted the drilling in 1986 of a previously mapped talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered as a potential source of crude talc are because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals that were observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing has allowed this deposit to be developed into an orebody. By definition, an orebody has to be a source of positive cash flow. With industrial minerals, this is determined as much by market acceptance as by are tenor.

By sharing my experiences I want to encourage you to consider your own experience with leadership, taking on change, learning from and contributing to the development of others.I have been very fortunate to be part of many new innovations into underground mining over the past 40 or so years; most of it with Conzinc Rio Tinto Australia (CRA)/Rio Tinto operations.•From hand-held drills and a homemade single boom Jumbo mounted on an old Airtrak, to the sophisticated twin boom jumbos with high speed drifters all controlled by an on-board computer;•from a Scraper winch and a Wagner 2D loader to fully automated electric LHDs that navigate to the tipple, empty the bucket and return to where they come from;•from hand-held cut-and-fill and timber stoping in Broken Hill to the bulk mining methods of a block cave where at Northparkes we mined more ore in a month than we mined in the total five years of operations at Currawang;•from hand-held scaling and bolting with no skin protection to installing ground support with Jumbos and sophisticated Cable Bolters and the introduction of in cycle shotcrete;•from hand-held ladder rising and shaft sinking to Box Hole rigs, Raise Bore Machines and Blind Hole shaft sinking; and•from Gelignite based AN60 stick explosives, ANFO, fuse firing and half second detonators to Powergel, Emulsions and electronic computer programmed detonators that can somehow be initiated by ‘Blast Ped’ travelling through the rock.
