The success of a mining operation depends on the quality of data used in decision-making processes and the people involved in making operational decisions. At Olympic Dam, mine geologists form an integral part of the teams that make decisions at various key points in the mine operational value chain. Mine geologists are directly and indirectly involved in all stages of the mining process, namely, orebody definition and categorisation, mine design and planning, metallurgical processing, and reconciliation.Due to the sheer size and complexity of the Olympic Dam deposit, each mining stage has been divided into smaller units within which decisions are made in line with the overall mine operational plan. In each of these units, the decisions and inputs made by mine geologists has ensured that consideration of geological factors is made in the mining process. Over time, the mine geology team has demonstrated a systematic approach in the development and improvement of their processes in line with the mine’s operational needs, such as understanding the in-stope ore variability and maintaining a consistent ore feed to the plant. An understanding and interpretation of the mineralisation distribution, based on acquired data, has proven to be important in the definition of resource modelling parameters. These parameters in turn affect the quality of grade estimates and their downstream use in planning, production and subsequent reconciliation processes. The continual study of the geology of the deposit, and unravelling its complexity through research has been crucial to the metals extraction process. The involvement of mine geologists through each of the mine value processes places Olympic Dam in a favourable position to benefit from future opportunities that will take advantage of the increasing operational demands and production pressures, and the ever changing economic conditions.This paper reviews the role mine geologists play in the realisation of the Olympic Dam deposit, from ore to product, through their interaction and collaboration with other departments and stakeholders. The Bureau of Mines conducted a study in which the magnetic fraction of urban refuse was used as melting stock in the preparation of high-strength, low-alloy and carbon steel. Product steels, made from incinerated steel can scrap, nonincinerated-nondetinned steel can scrap, nonincinerated-detinned steel can scrap, and dilutions of these scraps with No. 1 heavy melting scrap, were used in continuing tests in industrial, rural, and marine environments to determine the effect of residual elements and atmospheric pollutants on their atmospheric corrosion resistance. The respective commercial steels were exposed at the same time to establish baseline corrosion data for the test sites. Weight-loss data are reported for atmospheric exposures of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 3.8 years. The marine environment was the most corrosive; the industrial environment was the least corrosive. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of the carbon steel was improved 25 pct by using incinerated scrap and nonin-cinerated-nondetinned scrap in the steelmaking process. In no case was the atmospheric corrosion resistance of carbon steel degraded by using the magnetic fraction of urban refuse as melting stock. The presence of sulfur in the corrosion film was the most important factor affecting the corrosion resistance of the steels. With increasing sulfur concentration, the rate of the corrosion reaction was reduced and the corrosion film became more protective. The residual elements in the product steels most responsible for improving corrosion resistance were copper and tin. These elements tended to increase the concentration of sulfur in the corrosion film. At the levels present in the product steels, Cr, Ni, and Pb had no observable effect on the corrosion resistance of the steels.

"The froth flotation process was patented by E.L. Sulman, H.F.K. Pickard, and John Ballot in 1906 . . . . . . . . . .James M. Hyde installed the first froth flotation process in the U.S., about August 1, 1911, at the Basin Reduction Co. plant, Basin, Montana . . . . . . . . . .By 1914, 42 mining companies were operating or experimenting with the flotation process . . . . . . . . . .The period 1930 to 1960 saw the application of flotation spread to nonsulphide ores and become the key factor in the economic production of many industrial minerals". So states FROTH FLOTATION, 50th Anniversary Volume, published by AIME in 1962. It is interesting, to observe that the Mines Branch, now part of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, was established in 1907 through an act of Parliament entitled, "The Nines and Geology Act". In 1911, a mineral dressing group was formed and a laboratory was constructed. By 1921, an engineer was devoting full time to industrial mineral processing problems.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is used in the paper, plastics, paint, rubber, caulks, and sealants industries. The favorable properties of GCC include high whiteness and brightness, low hardness, and outstanding rheology in water systems. The quality of calcitic GCC ores, which include chalk, limestone, and marble, is dependent on calcite purity and the nature and quantity of ancillary minerals. Wet and dry grinding is used in the manufacture of GCC. Ore processed by optical sorting, flotation, and/or particle size classification has higher brightness and lower abrasion. GCC markets are a function of the product's properties, purity, and cost.

In recent years, the use of shotcrete, a practice familiar to the mining industry, has been on the increase. This research has come about because of the recognized need for a safe, easy way to line small diameter bored raises (less then 150cm). Up until now, an operator has gone down the raise and applied the concrete lining manually, using the shotcrete method of application. With an automated system, there would be no man positioned in the bore itself. All control functions could be commanded from a central location. Shotcreting in the confined space of a small diameter bored raise presents problems that can be overcome by the application of shotcrete using a remote system.

It is well known that the ability to influence project value reduces significantly as planning progresses and decisions regarding project parameters are made. However, at the prefeasibility stage in particular, where one of the main aims should be to evaluate a wide range of options in order to select the best for more detailed further study, there is often a reluctance to spend the time and money needed to do this rigorously. This paper demonstrates, by a number of case study examples, how significant increases in value may be obtained by fully evaluating the combinations of alternatives for various project design parameters, including (though not limited to) mining methods, haulage methods, mining rates, processing methods and rates, sequencing of mining, and cut-off grades, with changes and upgrades over time where applicable. The additional value unlocked is typically orders of magnitude greater than the additional cost of the more comprehensive study. The dangers of misuse of simplistic sensitivity analyses and failure to identify how strategies might change in response to changes in external factors are also illustrated, and the importance of selecting the best ægrade descriptorÆ is discussed.

The collection zone residence time distribution (RTD) of mechanical self-aerated flotation cells was characterized for liquid and solid per size class (-45 mm, +45-150 mm and +150 mm). It was found that a single large industrial cell with a volume of 130 to 250 m3, now used in plant operations, can be well represented by an LTST (large and small tank-in-series) model plus dead time. From a scale-up point of view, results showed a similar mixing behavior for industrial cells ranging from 130 to 250 m3. Also, single mechanical cells showed a similar mixing pattern (RTD) when compared to large pneumatic flotation columns. It was confirmed that for practical purposes, the mixing condition in a flotation bank of three or more cells in series can be well described by the classical N tanks-in-series model.

"Metal-coated thermoplastic parts find more and more functional and aesthetic applications in the interior and exterior of cars. The vapor-deposited or electroplated coatings are usually composed of a plurality of nickel- and chromium-containing layers, which are applied to copper-containing carrier layers on the polymers. Previously, recycling processes are mainly focussed at the recovery or thermal utilization of the plastics. Targeted and selective recycling of the metallic coatings is usually not carried out. Together with several SME, BTU developed a process, in which a complete and separate recovery of all components in high purity is possible with biotechnological methods. The bioleaching is carried out with iron and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, especially Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. The copper-containing layers are dissolved in the solution; chromium- and nickel-containing particles are precipitated as solids. After the bioleaching, a mechanical separation of the individual metal-containing components and their separate workup are carried out. End-products are metallic copper, a nickel- and chromium-containing solid and the cleaned plastics. The bioleaching ensures a high purity of the end products. Through the use of bacteria, which are also found in nature, the process is environmentally friendly. Compared to chemical leaching using inorganic acids, considerably shorter leaching times can be achieved. In addition to the optimization of the leaching process, the R/D-project also includes the development and testing of the apparatus technology.INTRODUCTION The material complexity of many end-user products has increased in recent years, especially in the fields of electrical appliances, vehicle technology and medical technology. However, the demands on functionality, safety, comfort and energy efficiency still play a greater role in product design as factors such as sustainability and usability. For example, if a car still holds more than 70% of steel in the 1980s, a vehicle nowadays includes a larger proportion of a variety of difficultly separable plastics and composite materials, as well as complex metal composites. This relates in particular to composites made from such different materials as metals and plastics. The processing and recovery of the components of those complex material mixtures is difficult for recycling companies."

The technologies of lead, zinc and tin extraction have made varying degrees of progress over the past twenty years. Producers of all metals have faced increasing demands for reduction of pollution and environmental degradation, and the level of public concern is rising rather than abating. New processing techniques must therefore be not only economically feasible, but politically acceptable, even when the demands of "conservationists" and ?environmentalists? are unreasonable. A new generation of processing techniques has come into being, which do not rely on an expensive sintering stage, nor use metallurgical coke, which is difficult to make without serious pollution. They utilise intense reactors, conveying materials from one stage to the next preferably within an enclosed space, obviating fume emissions, and avoiding heat losses as far as possible. The acceptability of the new techniques? is increased if lowgrade or complex materials can be treated, along with a variety of returns and wastes. In addition, a good selling and servicing organisation seems to be as important as good process technology in determining the spread of the new processes. In the field of pyrometallurgical refining the need is for more general application of several recently developed techniques rather than a search for alternatives to the existing process technologies. However, there is a need for fundamental work investigating the phenomenon of oxygen anode overvoltage in the electrolytic zinc process, in order to make progress in the further reduction of energy consumption. There is also scope for further development and application of vacuum distillation to up-grade thermally produced zinc. "This paper examines the impact of the various assumptions that go into an economic evaluation, and shows how these can be combined to show an exciting result that may not really exist. An example of an embellished case (the kind that one frequently sees when projects are being promoted) is developed and the cumulative impact is analysed to show the actual project underneath. The paper also points out some areas to watch for overly optimistic assumptions such as prices, inflation, and debt. The concept of a ""bare bones"" base case is proposed (constant metal prices, constant dollars, no inflation, no debt, no interest, on a project basis, after tax) as a common reference point.As well, the discount rate is examined as a fundamental means of reflecting risk in discounted cash flow evaluations. Current industry practice is discussed, and a methodology for the analysis of risk levels is proposed that assesses the constituent components of the discount rate: real interest, mineral project risks, and country risk.INTRODUCTIONOften, the first time that all of the technical and economic data for a mineral project comes together in one place is when the economic evaluation is developed. This typically happens when work on the project has progressed to a sufficient level of detail that the effort to produce a year-by-year cash flow is justified, usually at the pre-feasibility or feasibility study stage. The flotation has been and is still the most widely used mineral concentration method. Because of its complexity, the flotation process required the development of robust control strategies which was facilitated by the introduction of on-line sensing instruments such as x-ray fluorescence (XRF) on stream analyzer (OSA), gamma density gauges and electromagnetic flowmeters. The interest in developing control strategies has persisted because the benefits to be gained in terms of improved metallurgical performance are substantial. As the flotation control becomes more and more difficult due to the emergence of low grade and complex ore cases, other control strategies have to be introduced. Froth based control is one of the emerging useful control strategy This paper will focus on the state of the art in the on-line froth characterization as obtained by numerical image analysis. The technology of machine vision provides a novel solution to several of the problems encountered in conventional flotation systems for monitoring and control, and constitutes a powerful tool for the investigation and interpretation of the effect of various flotation parameters as driven for the froth phases. The request to participate on your theme panel was accepted with some reluctance but indeed as an honor. My subject was outlined to cover &apos;Energy Resources - both nuclear and conventional&apos; as related to your theme &apos;Minerals - Treasure Trove of the West&apos;. This is indeed quite an order and I hope you will forgive me for concentrating mainly on the nuclear-uranium portion with brief references only to conventional fuels some of which will be covered in detail later in your conference. In regard to Uranium, I am speaking on the fringe of the area containing half the uranium reserves in your country and no doubt to many who are very conversant with knowledge of these resources. Nevertheless since our two countries have been very closely allied in both nuclear developments and uranium supplies I hope an exchange of information may be mutually beneficial. Concentration on the nuclear fuel resources is I hope understandable as nuclear energy is the coming source of power which will augment the rapid demand in the industrialized countries and provides hope for economic power in many of the more underdeveloped countries. The situation regarding conventional fuel resources is more widely known and their expanding future revolves around production cost reductions, research into diversified uses, plus more assurance of imports from countries less effected by international controversies determining export policies.

This report has appeared in the National Technical Information Service as bulletin number PB230 972/AS. 1.2 ANALYTICAL PREDICTIONS OF INDUCED VOLTAGES AND CURRENTS The basic building block in this analytical work is the development of an equivalent circuit. The equivalent circuit for the cable depends on all of the distributed parameters of the cable, although the series inductance and resistance are of primary importance. The cable resistances are generally available from handbooks or from cable manufacturers. On the other hand, the cable inductances are not usually available from either handbooks or the manufacturer&apos;s published data. Thus, it is useful to present the results of the derivation of the inductance matrix and a few intermediate steps.

Improvement in profitability would need significant improvements in operational performance. Consequently, over the last few years, there has been a major focus amongst some mining companies to imbibe Operational Excellence. This has been only possible because of the replacement of a silos based approach by an integrated view of the organization. Such an integrated view is now possible via the evolving digital technologies. Even so, such a transformation calls for a change in culture, which, for most organization is not trivial. Attempts in the past to integrate functions such as through Mine-to-Mill initiatives in the mining industry have demonstrated significant benefits to many operations (McKee, 2013). Still, sustaining these benefits has clearly been a challenge due to manpower turn over and lack of proper systems and structures that integrate information between business functions within an operation and between operations and the corporate.Opportunities The advent of digital technology has opened-up opportunities to integrate inter-departmental information for a unified understanding of, and across, an entire organization. The advances in instrumentation, equipment control systems, supervisory control systems (SCADA/Historian) and industrial networks have helped in the direction of enterprise wide integration. "LIKE ALL OTHER NOVA SCOTIANS, I have been thrilled during the past few years with the growing evidence that substantial reserves of oil and gas are being discovered off the Atlantic coast of Canada. There are those in this province who believe that large-scale commercial production is just around the corner, and that when it starts Nova Scotia will begin to float on a sea of royalties. These overly optimistic people, of whom I am not one, are convinced that with the first barrel of oil shipped to market, Nova Scotia can forget its financial problems while its people take on the luxurious lifestyle of the shieks of Kuwait or Saudi Arabia. You and I know, however, that even though offshore oil and gas may turn out to be the greatest gift nature has ever bestowed on Eastern Canada, it may take some considerable time before the reserves can be accurately assessed, before the industry can become fully operational, and before the benefits of production can be translated into royalties and tax revenue, improved public services, new industrial facilities and more jobs. While it is premature for the ordinary Nova Scotian to take on the habit of buying expensive cigars and lighting them with ten-dollar bills, it is not too early for him to insist that governments and industry plan intensively and well for the beneficial exploitation of undersea resources."

This paper discusses the method and results of an options study into selection of the optimal form for a 130 m high tailings/water retaining dam, located in a region of high seismicity in central Iran. The proposed dam is part of a planned expansion project for Sarcheshmeh Copper Mine (SCM), which after construction will provide 550 million tonnes of additional tailings storage over the next 27 years. Geotechnical investigation at the proposed site indicated that adequate suitable low permeability materials (i.e. clay) were not available in the immediate vicinity of the dam site and would need to be imported from a distance of well over 10 km (direct). Given the magnitude of the estimated quantity of material and construction cost it was considered prudent to compare the cost of alternative dam design options for the proposed storage. A total of five dam design options are considered including a conventional rockfill embankment dam with an upstream sloping earth core (ECRD), a geomembrane face rockfill embankment dam (GFRD), a sloping asphalt core rockfill embankment dam (ACRD), a roller compacted concrete dam (RCCD), and a filter rockfill embankment dam for tailings storage together with a separate smaller earthfill core rockfill dam (ECRD) located downstream for storage of decant water.
