For a country that is as important a gold producer as Canada, the return to the gold standard of the major commercial countries of the world during the past five years is of particular significance. To the Canadian gold mining industry, the advantages of the gold standard are a matter of more than theoretical importance. According to economic theory, prices are determined by the relation between the demand for, and the supply of, money. The demand consists of the offering of goods for money; the more goods offered, the greater the demand. The supply consists of the total money available for the purchase of goods. The total supply of goods to be exchanged through the instrumentality of money remaining the same, an increase in the supply of money will, according to this theory, raise prices; conversely, a decrease in the supply of money will lower prices. Let us imagine that everyone in the world suddenly had twice as much money, and that the sum total of all goods remained the same. Is it not obvious that we would pay just double the price for these goods? In Canada today, most people have approximately 50 per cent grea.ter income than in 1913, and the average price for all articles sold in Canada is 50 per cent above those in 1913.

MECHANIZATION of coal mine, is radically changing the requirements for under-ground transportation. It has increased materially the need for reliability and belt conveyors are the most dependable means of moving coal away from the place where it is mined. Their record of freedom from delays is almost 100 per cent. Why then are- not belt conveyors in more general use. Part of the answer lies in the pour records made at some of the earlier installations, and in the fact that belts have so long been identified as a type of equipment suitable, in the main, only to thin seams. Another reason is lack of knowledge of the full potentialities of belt transportation.

The conventional role of exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Nine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world's classic Archean gold deposits.

The generation and disposal of solid waste from electric utility plants using a lime or limestone wet-scrubbing system and the potential effects on the environment were estimated for 1975 and 1980. The study indicated that in 1975 approximately 5.8 million tons of desulfurization solid waste (50 percent solids) will be generated. In 1980, when it is estimated that desulfurization will become commercially accepted, approximately 71.4 million tons of this material will be generated for disposal and/or utilization. The desulfurization waste material when combined with lime, fly ash, and water may have potential for use as a roadbase material, landfill reclamation, and synthetic aggregate.

"In the application of the BIOX® technology, high tailings grade (2-16 g/t) may be generated with a decrease in overall gold recovery, which sometimes make it economically unattractive. This paper investigated the causes of the high tailings grade by using samples from the Bogoso BIOX plant. Partial chemical analysis, diagnostic tests and cyanidation optimisation studies were conducted to invoke understanding into the high tailings grades. Diagnostic study on the tailings showed 48.34% of gold in carbonaceous matter, 17.12% in quartz, 13.40% as liberated gold, 11.51% imbedded in sulphides and the remaining 9.65% in carbonates. Optimum cyanidation recovery of 90.4% was established for the BIOX concentrate at 7 kg/t NaCN, 40-50 g/L activated carbon and residence time of 40 hours. The recovery was sensitive to carbon and cyanide concentrations but additional cyanide was not economical. High preg-robbing indices of 72.7% and 64.4% were recorded for the BIOX product and the flotation concentrate respectively. This confirms the inability of the BIOX process to deactivate carbonaceous matter, which remains a serious precursor for low overall gold recoveries and high CIL tailings. INTRODUCTION Gold ores may be broadly classified as refractory and non-refractory. Non-refractory ores are easy to treat but refractory materials require complicated flowsheets for metal extraction (Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001; Marsden and House, 2006). As near surface non-refractory gold deposits are getting depleted, the increasing price of gold and increasing demand for gold, have encouraged many gold producing companies to treat refractory ores for gold recovery. The refractory behaviour of these ores may be due to the presence of sulphides, tellurides, cyanicides and/or carbonaceous matter. Refractory ores do not respond well to conventional cyanidation as the gold is either occluded by or in solid solution in sulphides, or is in association with cyanicides (Marsden and House, 2006). Further, carbonaceous matter preg-robs gold during leaching (Osseo-Asare et al, 1984; Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001). The two major causes of refractoriness are the presence of sulphides and carbonaceous matter, and these render the ore double refractory (Nyavor and Egiebor, 1992). Oxidative pre-treatment processes such as high pressure leaching/oxidation; biological oxidation, ultra-fine grinding and roasting are required to render refractory ores amenable to conventional cyanidation (Marsden and House, 2006). Biological oxidation, however, has become the preferred pre-treatment route because it is more environmentally friendly and convenient even where only partial oxidation is required. Comparative tests have demonstrated that bioleaching can achieve the same or better results than roasting or pressure leaching in terms of gold recovery (Yannopoulos, 1991; Brierley, 1997). Further, biological treatment processes are more cost-effective, environmentally friendly and safer."

THE Cuyuna manganiferous iron ores can be a principal source of manganese for the iron and steel industry in the United States, provided metallurgical methods as a whole are adjusted so as to use run-of-mine ore. The use of manganese in steelmaking is growing. Increasing amounts of impurities in raw materials call for more manganese, a constant cheap supply of which is wanted. There are few deposits of ore in the United States carrying over 35 per cent. manganese that can be mined and marketed at a profit in normal times. We are largely dependent on foreign ores. The small domestic deposits should rightly be held in reserve for an emergency, such as a war, when importation might cease. Even the production from lean ores, concentrated it may be, might not carry us through a protracted stringency. The Cuyuna district is, therefore, during normal times capable of supplying a large total of manganese. The ores are iron ores containing 5 to 25 per cent. of manganese with the inverse range of 52 to 28 per cent of iron. The manganese costs no more per unit in the ore than the iron, because cost of mining, largely by open-pit methods, is not affected by the manganese content. The manganese units should, perhaps, command a higher price, but as their value is contingent on metallurgical practice, a higher price may be justified only when a shortage in manganese occurs. Manganiferous iron ores can never entirely supplant straight manganese ores though methods are employed that will permit them to do so partly. For the manufacture of ferromanganese, ores carrying above 42 per cent. manganese are needed. Ores with manganese running between 20 and 42 per cent. are used for making spiegeleisen. But established practice in certain plants, based on the admixture of manganiferous iron ores to straight iron ores has greatly lessened the consumption of high-priced, scarce, manganese alloys with good results.

"Those having an intimate knowledge of the relation between production and consumption of crude oil in the United States have realized for some time that production will not be able to keep pace with consumption. The American public has had this called forcibly to its attention by the increased prices of gasoline and crude oil, and by the recent shortage of gasoline on the Pacific Coast. In substance, each year we are consuming millions of barrels of oil more than we produce, and this deficit must be made to by importations. A careful analysis of the situation makes it evident that we need every barrel of oil that can be produced.Need for the Petroleum Production Engineer.Under present production practices perhaps 80% of the oil still remains in the sand. (See Lewis, J.O., Methods for increasing the recovery from oil sands, U. S. Bureau of Mines, Bulletin 148 p. 8.) Many wells are making water, and even whole pools are being flooded. The burning of fuels under field boilers is not generally efficient, and often gas is not made to do its full duty in bringing the oil to the well.In the past the producer has had to combat these and other problems single-handed. He has been too busy to give them special attention, and he has had little competent engineering advice. Oil, gas, and water occur underground according to certain natural laws. Undoubtedly an engineer, who is familiar with production practices and understands the fundamentals of the accumulation of oil and gas, can be of service to the producer by specializing on certain problems with a view of getting mare oil from the sand. In every other enterprise of similar magnitude the engineer is regarded as a necessary unit to its operation, and he should be so in the production of oil. His field of work should extend to every phase of production in which science and engineering and geology"

"Estimating and managing the costs of complex infrastructure projects – in the planning/design and construction phases, for both owners and contractors – has been a challenge for decades. The more complex and technologically advanced the project, the greater the uncertainty, including potential risks that are important to owners and contractors, such as:• Cost risks to owners – meeting budget and schedule, maintaining public credibility.• Cost risks to contractors – profit, consequences of loss, impacts to reputation/future work.This concern has been addressed in various ways by the underground construction industry for some time (Reilly, 2001). In particular, while significant advances have been made in cost estimating for the planning and design phases (Reilly et al., 2004), that are important to agencies and political decision-makers, it is not apparent that these advances have been widely adopted for construction cost estimates. The reasons for this may relate to lowbid considerations – any method that tends to increase the contractor’s cost estimate, by including risk or likely costs, could lead to an erosion of the contractor’s competitive position – if others are not similarly required to include such costs.Different cost estimating methods produce different levels of information. Specifically, there is a large difference in the character and depth of information if a deterministic (quantities times price plus a contingency) and risk-based cost methods are used. It is this difference in character and depth of information that is the reason that risk-based cost estimating has potential value for owners and contractors. Figure 1 presents hypothetical cost results from deterministic and risk-based methods and illustrates some of these differences.In Fig. 1, the results for deterministic and risk-based cost estimates are given related to the potential profit or loss for a typical project. As is evident in this example, there is significant potential for costs to be realized that are higher than the proposal/bid value estimated using a deterministic approach, with a 15 percent probability of a loss. There is a 30 percent probability that the project will have a reduced profit. There is a 55 percent probability that the project will return a good profit. The investigation described in this report was begun as part of the Bureau of Mines progress to develop acid processes for the extraction of alumina from low-grade bauxite and. clays. A domestic shortage of high-grade bauxite sui table for treatment by the Bayer process became acute as a result of' World War II; an intensive search for a practical acid process using lower-grade alumina-bearing raw materials was therefore warranted. The laboratory development was described in a preceding Bureau of Mines publication wherein the basic theory for the design and erection of a pilot plant maybe found. A 2-ton-per-day continuous pilot plant was constructed and successfully operated at College Park, Md., which demonstrated conclusively the chemical and mechanical feasibility of a solvent purification process for aluminum sulfate. The estimated production cost of $38.64 indicates that under present market conditions the process would not be economically feasible.

The purpose of tins paper is not to present new date on the pressure losses due to bends and chances of area in mine openings through which air flows, but rather to correlate existing data, determined mainly on small duct systems and expressed in a variety of ways, according to uniform methods that facilitate their use in pressure-loss computations. These are required in such, air-flow problems as determining the quantity that will flow through is mine openings under a certain pressure difference or, conversely, the pressure difference that will be required to maintain a certain rate of flow. Air flowing through h ducts, such as mine airways, encounters resistance to flow due to interference of the individual air streams with each other caused by the wall surfaces. The result is that part of the kinetic energy of the flowing stream is converted to heat; and constant renewal of the kinetic energy from the total energy of the flow is required to maintain it. This process manifests itself by a decrease of the total pressure (static pressure plus velocity pressure; of the air in the direction of flow; in order that flow pray occur, there must necessarily be a differences in total pressure between the two cads of the air-ay equivalent to the pressure losses occasioned by the flow, which automatically adjusts itself in magnitude to the pressure difference maintained.

In the mine of this study, cemented hydraulic backfill is placed under the form of a slurry at a percentage of solid by weight varying from 50 to 65 per cent. This slurry settles and cures in the stope. During this process an important amount of water must be drained from the scope. Field observations in the case studied here show that the geometry of the drains system has a significant impact on the drainage of the stopes. The mode of filling produces a backfill showing an evident stratification typical of a sedimentation process. In situ observations on this material show that this stratification translates into a very strong heterogeneity in the physical properties of the cemented backfill. This heterogeneity should affect the hydraulic conductivity of the backfill in the scope. In order to study this aspect, finite element simulations were performed. This paper presents the results of these simulations, where the impact of this stratification on hydraulic conductivity is related to the performance of the backfill drainage system for various geometry. This preliminary study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the role of the drains in the dewatering process of the backfilled stope in the case of this Mine.

As the level of technology applied in the electrical measurement, control, and display portions of mine hoist systems continues to advance, the issues and concerns associated with the ramifications of the application of microprocessor technology on the safety-related aspects of these systems become paramount. This report, in part tutorial, addresses several aspects of these concerns. Beginning with discussions of microprocessor-based system architectures, the report addresses some existing and anticipated uses of this technology in mine hoist systems and discusses safety related considerations associated with the areas of data derivation; control and display panels; and system reliability issues. The report concludes with electrical maintenance and inspection considerations associated with the safety assurance of microprocessor based mine hoist systems.

"The financial valuation of mining assets has a number of fundamental differences to the valuation of many other asset groupings. One such difference is that typically, the greater proportion of both the cost and revenue sides of the cash flow are inherently governed by systemic market forces.As a result, the range of outcomes for the valuation of each mining asset is more unpredictable, with higher levels of risk and uncertainty. In contrast, the management function of many other non-mining businesses or industry groups can control at least a portion of the cash flow by maintaining the margin or controlling the sales price. The management teams of mining businesses and operations typically have limited options, and are thus price-takers for both costs and revenues. As mining is an inherently cyclical industry, large, long-life operations can exist through several price cycles, making valuation both subjective and challenging.The outcomes of both static- and stochastic-based valuations, as well as the internal probabilities of the associated cash flow statements, are significantly impacted when the correlations between the appropriate parameters are quantified, modelled and incorporated into the valuation framework. The appropriate parameters for correlation modelling primarily include those that are governed by systemic market forces. Applying this process results in a different risk profile for the asset by allowing the risks resulting from systemic market movements to be more accurately quantified and then objectively minimised. This process also reduces the level of residual uncertainty in the valuation outcome.This paper presents a valuation methodology to pragmatically incorporate this level of valuation sophistication and statistically quantify the associated increase in the level of confidence of the valuation outcomes reported.CITATION:Holloway, E C, 2016. In January 1993, Pyramid Resources began implementation of a supervisory expert control system at a U.S Cu concentrator. The objective of this control system was to improve plant profitability through unit operation optimization and integration. This paper documents the key aspects of the project, including: economic and associated benefits, system architecture, concepts of implementation, process control strategies, practical aspects of implementation and conclusions. The implementation of expert control at this concentrator has resulted in an estimated benefit of $50,500 per day. This is a net result of improved tonnage, reduced reagent consumption, improved concentrate grade and reduced energy per ton produced.

"The artisanal mining sector in Central Africa is largely informal, yet provides an essential livelihood for many (directly or indirectly) participants, as well as facilitating an important source for the flow of income into many communities. Artisanal mining varies from site to site, but appear largely well structured despite its informality. The artisanal mining sites in Central Africa have some inherent management structure and the extraction itself is often organised. Artisanal mining is labour intensive and is generally conducted utilising hand digging methods e.g. shovels or hand chisels. Artisanal mining is generally more dangerous than small-scale or large-scale modern mining operations. This is especially true as artisanal operations are generally subsistence activities with artisanal miners focusing more on immediate concerns than the long-term consequences of their activities. When miners have no other source of income, they will usually find ways to evade controls and carry on working. The objective, through proper/dedicated training of artisanal miners is to migrate Artisanal mining to establish a small-scale mining (SSM) industry in Central Africa. Through developing the necessary skills in the fundamental areas of mining it is proposed that Artisanal Mining can become more productive and safer mining operations. The paper reviews the above focus areas, highlighting the skills and tools that are necessary to assist in establishing a sustainable small scale mining industry migrating from manual labour to semi-mechanised mining and processing. The purpose of the transformation process is to create a safe, healthy, environmental and community oriented mining operation with the objective to uplift the skills and wealth of the mineworkers and the general community."

In the USA, risk-based decision making has not been a common approach to tunnel safety in the past, but this is changing, as concepts such as “equivalency” in the NFPA 502 framework gain acceptance in the USA and elsewhere. In other regions, in particular in Europe, risk assessment techniques have been used for nearly two decades in many jurisdictions as an additional tool to complement the application of prescriptive guidelines and support decisions related to tunnel safety. After some initial difculties these methods are meanwhile a well-established element of tunnel safety management. There are several tools available which have been practically applied and further developed over years, such as the Austrian tunnel risk model TuRisMo, or the PIARC owned DG-QRAM model. Whereas TuRisMo is a holistic, system-based model, which is best suited to quantify and assess re risk and associated mitigation measures, DG-QRAM focusses on the risks related to the transport of hazardous materials. Depending on the objectives and the scope of the investigation and the regulatory environment tunnel risk assessment tools are in use for different purposes, mainly to demonstrate a sufcient level of safety and to decide on and select additional risk mitigation measures. The international eperience substantiates that the general approach is eible and that the methods and tools are mature and can be applied for different problems in different environments. First case studies like the risk study on conditions and permissibility of the transport of hazardous materials through the Eisenhower-Johnson-Memorial Tunnel in Colorado demonstrate the applicability of a risk-based concept for decision making in the US-American environment.

In early June, Rio Tinto?s chief executive officer Tom Albanese said that he expected demand for iron ore, aluminum and copper to double in the next 15 years. Driven by global industrialization and urbanization, Albanese said during his company?s annual general meeting that to meet the demand in 2030, the additional supply required will be equivalent to replicating the iron ore output of Australia?s Pilbara region every five years, adding another aluminum production complex the size of Canada?s Saguenay every nine months and developing another copper mine the size of Escondida, in Chile, each year.

The Humphrey's spiral is a static gravity separation device which cannot be adjusted to match short-term variations that occur in the feed. Any disturbance in the feed grade, per cent solids or flow rate affects substantially the recovery and grade of concentrate. Such variations must be minimized in order to maintain the desired rate of production and quality of the product for which the installation has been designed. A study has been performed in which the foregoing assertions were quantified. The feed grade, per cent solids, flow rate and particle size were varied independently. Ore from Carol Lake, Nfld., was used throughout the experiments. This consisted of specular hematite and magnetite in a silica gangue.

THE development of the oil and gas resources of Western Canada is not, as many suppose, a new industry. For more than half a century an intensive search for these valuable products of nature extended from near the western edge of the Precambrian Shield to the Pacific coast, and from the International boundary north to the Arctic circle. The chief centre of interest to the oil prospector has, however, always lain in that region lying east of the first range of the Rocky mountains and confined largely within the boundaries of the Province of Alberta. Although there are many geological problems yet to be worked out in this Province, the oil-well driller has helped in no small way in determining sub-surface conditions and distribution of rock formations. The chief geological conditions as they affect the drilling of wells are generally re-cognized, and for this purpose the Province may be partitioned into three main divisions: first, the disturbed belt or foothills region extending along the eastern edge of the Rocky mountains; second, the Alberta geosyncline, a broad trough lying to the east of and parallel to the disturbed belt and from which the formations rise eastward to level off and form, third, the plains ? ? region, extending over the rest of the Province. A relatively small area in the northeastern part of the Province is underlain with Precambrian rocks and may be excluded from this classification, as it is of no interest to the oil prospector. The foothills, or disturbed belt, has presented the greatest difficulty to drilling, though it has produced the largest yield of oil within the Province to date. Within the foothills belt, the rock formations consist largely of hard shales interspersed with layers of abrasive sandstones, which wear out drilling bits at an alarming rate. The strata, in most flaces, dip steeply and are cut by numerous thrust faults. Although some o the faults have great displacements, their presence may easily be overlooked or the extent of the fault misinterpreted. Many a prospect well has been located on what appeared to be a suitable geological structure only to find, after drilling through a normal succession of rocks for 4,000 feet or more, that the drill had passed through a major fault plane to a younger formation than that in which drilling was started. Only a repetition of formations already drilled could be expected at greater depths.
