Conditions affecting minerals investments are continuing to change at an increasing rate, and in this paper we will attempt to predict the course of mine financing in the future. We will first review the situation historically and then examine the problems and constraints that are now making the financing task more difficult. Suggested solutions are discussed, and a new method of financing a group of mining projects is hypothesized.

Extraction by organic solvents is a chemical process in which metal species in the aqueous phase react with an organic reagent to form an organometallic com- plex, thus, the metal species leave the aqueous phase and enter the organic phase from which it can be stripped back in the aqueous phase to obtain a pure and a concentrated solution. The metal in the organic phase is not bound to carbon atoms as in organometallic compounds but to oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, or hydrogen by a co-ordination (dative) bond (Habashi, 1999).Solvent extraction was used for the first time in hydrometallurgy in connec- tion with the special and urgent materials requirements of nuclear energy during World War II. A plant was constructed in the United States for the preparation of high-purity uranyl nitrate solution. In this plant, the yellow cake (a high-grade sodium or ammonium uranate) was dis- solved in HNO,, and uranium was selec- tively extracted by ether then stripped by water to give a concentrated solution of pure uranyl nitrate. This was gradually followed by developing methods for other high-priced metals such as plutonium, thorium, niobium, tantalum, zirconium, hafnium, boron, beryllium, and molybde num. The second step took place in the 1960s when solvent extraction was applied for the first time to extract a rela- tively cheap metal-copper. At present, solvent extraction technology is wide- spread, well accepted, and highly efficient. A survey is made of changes in the technical status of a number of western world copper extraction and refining operations over the past 20 years. Specific developments in pyro- and hydro-metallurgy and refining practices are identified together with factors in the changing environment of the industry which has influenced their adoption. Nickel extraction and refining is similarly discussed.The replacement of traditional technology by more attractive alternatives has occurred in a considerable number of operations. The develop-ment and status of new continuous smelting processes, advances in hydrometallurgy and refining innovations which emerged during the 1960s and early 1970s is discussed. The varying experience in commercial acceptance of these new technologies is noted.Finally some possible future directions are canvassed for both operators and the research and development institutions.

Chelopech Mining EAD (CMEAD) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dundee Precious Metals Inc (DPM) and operates the Chelopech underground mine and processing facility located in Bulgaria. The final product sold is a flotation concentrate containing copper minerals with associated gold and silver. The increase in production from 0.6 to 1.0 Mt/a by 2009 occurred with the original (1975) secondary/tertiary crushing, and primary/secondary ball mill circuits. As part of the mine/mill upgrade project to 2.0 Mt/a, a new single stage semi-autogenous (SAG) mill and ancillary equipment was installed, replacing the original circuits, with commissioning occurring during the first half of 2011. Aspects of the design, commissioning and operation of the new comminution facility are the subjects of this paper.An extensive program of comminution characterisation test work was completed in 2004/2005, which indicated moderate hardness and competency characteristics. The characteristics were considered suitable for a range of comminution approaches which were assessed with respect to power requirements and capital and operating costs. Retention of the existing primary crushing facility, and installation of a new single stage SAG mill located within the existing mill building, was selected as the design for the expansion.An extended ramp-up schedule for the overall concentrator upgrade turned out to be necessary as the comminution and flotation circuits were completed prior to several downstream unit processes (concentrate filtration and tailings thickening), which were required to reach the design mill feed throughput rate on a sustainable basis. This resulted in the opportunity to gradually increase the SAG mill ball charge as necessary, to obtain the throughput corresponding to the various downstream processing constraints.A relatively fine cyclone overflow stream particle size distribution is a feature of the Chelopech comminution circuit that has not been fully overcome with increasing ball charge conditions. "Recent regulations, as well as a general aversion to central dust collectors within the Powder River Basin Coal user’s community, have created a need for an alternate method for eliminating airborne dust. This paper addresses the capital expenditure as well as the cost of ownership of an integrated point source air cleaning system in comparison to a central collection system. This assessment was conducted by comparing the cost to purchase and operate a central dust collection system and integrated air cleaner system on a typical multiple transfer point application. The central dust collector consists of a negative pressure blower, a series of filter bags, a collection hopper, a screw conveyor to place collected material back into the material stream, and a series of ducts to pull air and dust from individual pickup points. The point specific integrated air cleaners consists of a negative pressure blower to pull dust and air from an application point through a bag-less filter media located at the application point. The agglomerated material is then redeposited into the material stream at point of use without the need for ducting or a central material hopper. The assessment yielded a 54% reduction in capital expenditure and a 26% reduction in operating costs for the same application when using individual dust filters as opposed to a central system. In addition to the lowered cost, there are reductions in risk associated with the elimination of ductwork and the central containment enclosure for collected explosive dust. By the conclusion of this paper, the reader will have a better understanding of the quantifiable differences between a central dust collection system and a set integrated air cleaner systems. BACKGROUND Spillage has always been a problem in the bulk solids handling industry. As long as there have been conveyors, there has been spillage. Spillage is material that falls off a conveyor belt and creates a hazard in the environment around a conveyor belt."

This work presents a kinetics study covering the effects of temperature over the reduction rates of a carbon composite briquette, aiming its use as burden in some of the new alternate ironmaking technologies, such as the Tecnored process. It is reported that increases in the temperature increases the reaction rate. Additionally, the morphology of the iron phase generated during the reduction of these briquettes is presented. It was possible to verify that three types of iron morphology occurred during the process: an external, dense and continuous iron layer, the presence of iron globules at the center of the briquettes and whiskers at the briquette's core. The measurement of the carbon content on the globules and the external iron layer is also presented.

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese ore, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines obtained and examined samples of ore from six properties in the vicinity of Pioche, Lincoln County, Nev., and from one property near Caliente, Lincoln County, Nev. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, their amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods was investigated.In general, the Pioche ores had a low manganese content and, owing to extremely intimate association of manganese minerals with iron oxide and nonmetallic gangue, were refractory to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Only two samples (Zero Gap and Wheeler ores) were amenable to the production of concentrates that would sinter to a marketable plus 35-percent manganese grade. The Prince Consolidated and Ely Valley No. 1.ores were roasted and sintered to produce lead-silver-zinc fumes. The residues were of possible value as manganiferous iron ore. No marketable manganese products were made from Calton semi-oxidized ore, but over 80 percent recoveries of lead, silver, and zinc were made by bulk sulfide flotation followed by Diming of the sulfide concentrate. No satisfactory results were obtained by treatment of Golden Eagle and Ely Valley No. 2 ores.The Cudverwell ore was amenable to the production of high-grade manganese concentrates by ore-drssing methods. However, fine grinding was required to effect mineral liberation, and loss of manganese as slime limited the mangenese recoveries obtainable.In the coarse of the investigations, many data were obtained and compiled, but for the sake of brevity, several data, of secondary importance have been omitted or condensed, and only the tests giving the more promising results are discussed in detail. For convenience, the report has been divided into two parts, one opertaining to the Pioche ores and the other summarzing results obtained by testing Culverwell ore."

No attempt has been made to include in this report all the mines and prospects in the various mining districts, and it should be stated that whether or not a property is mentioned herein has no. bearing on its merits. The report rovers the situation of the various districts, types of ore deposits, ownership and description of mines and prospects, information on past and current activity, and other information of economic interest likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. The names of the various districts mentioned are those generally used when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. When originally organized, the districts embraced large areas with no well-defined boundaries, so that the names have little geographical significance.

"These tentative coal mine inspection standards have been prepared as a guide for the Federal inspection of coal mines of the United States. Much time and thought have been spent by various members of the Safety Division in the preparation of thses standards, and it is believed that compliance with them eventually will be possible in most mines. In many instances objections will be raised to them owing to long-established mining customs and practices that are inherently of dubious safety and to a natural inclination to oppose change. In other instances there will be valid objections due to conditions not foreseen at the time these standards were prepared. Or there may be substandard conditions and practices due to original mine layouts that it is not practicable to change during the lifetime of the mine; in such instances it is likely that some effective measures are or can be taken toward lessening hazards.With the rapid change in mining methods some of the standards may become inapplicable and it may be advisable to revise them to meet the new conditions. Therefore, questions regarding these standards and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the supervising engineer of the Coal Mine Inspection Division so that modifications of and additions to these standards may be made from time to time.In many respects these standards exceed the provisions of the various State mining laws, and some may conflict with the laws of some States. In cases of conflict, the intent is not to advocate noncompliance with State laws but to suggest that it may be desirable for the State to reconsider such laws or safety orders.Although an effort has been made to word these standards so that they may be readily understood, nevertheless, a reasonable interpretation should be placed upon them. In fact, in numerous instances the words reasonable"", ""suitable"", and ""properly"" are used in recognition of the fact that reason- and sound judgment enter into the carrying out of the safety endeavor.The policy of the Bureau on some vitally important safety matters in mines is set forth in its published Safety Decisions. These decisions have been consulted and used in the preparation of these standards. These decisions also are now being reexamined by its Mine Safety Board."

The partial reduction of zinc ferrite to zinc oxide and iron (II, III) oxide can enhance the leaching rate of zinc. Zinc ferrite has often been found as a major component of zinc residues and electric arc furnace dust. The Waelz process is an existing process for zinc ferrite processing, which requires a temperature of more than about 1200 °C to produce Waelz oxide containing ZnO. Since zinc residues have been deemed as a potential way for the extraction of zinc and other critical metals, it is important to analyze the reaction kinetics in the temperature range of interest. This manuscript discusses the chemical kinetics of zinc ferrite reduction by hydrogen gas. Several researchers studied the reduction of zinc ferrite with CO; however, unlike CO, the use of H2 gas as a reductant allows partial reduction of zinc ferrite even at low-temperature range (400–600 °C). Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) experiments were performed in the temperature range of 300–700 °C with 10% and 30% H2, and the data obtained was analyzed using the isoconversional method of kinetic analyses. The standard models used for isoconversional kinetic analysis were chosen from literature and experimental data were fitted to determine the controlling mechanism and calculation of kinetic parameters of reduction of zinc ferrite. The rate of reaction was found to be increasing with an increase in temperature and partial pressure of H2 gas. The reaction could be divided into three stages, where reaction interface contraction was found to be the controlling mechanism at the initial stage of reaction. As the reaction proceeds, product layer thickness increases, and thus, diffusion was found to be the controlling mechanism. Roasting products obtained from TGA experiments were also characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to verify critical morphological details.

"A t remote locations typical of mines and associated ore processing plants, diesel electric generators are ideally suited for power plants due to their inherent operating flexibility, efficiency and reliability. In recent years rapid escalation in fuel and related transportation costs has made extensive waste heat recovery from generating sets financially attractive to a much greater extent than previously.The paper outlines key considerations during planning and design stages for utilizing the various waste heat sources available to best advantage. Based on two /980 mining projects built in the Canadian Arctic, data is presented on potential operating and capital costs savings. A review of heat balances, engineering flow diagrams and major equipment selections for process and building heating systems utilizing waste heat is included.IntroductionResource projects increasingly occur in remote areas requiring on-site self sufficiency in electrical power generation. For such projects, the low- or medium-speed turbo-charged diesel engine is very often the preferred choice as a prime mover for the generating sets . It is inherently reliable, has good response to load changes and has comparatively high fuel efficiency over a wide load range . From a project execution standpoint, It is capital cost- competitive and procurement lead-time normally ' fits ' within tight schedule constraints. In addition, its potential for waste heat recovery is excellent , particularly in northern climates where space heating requirements are usually substantial, and also where there a re requirements for heat for process and plant services.The high cost of fuel , with add-on transportation costs , provides a major incentive to fully exploit the available waste heat recovery potential o f such installations.As a result of the rapid escalation in the price of petroleum products following major crude oil price increases in 1973 and again in 1978-79, liquid petroleum fuels, having the desirable properties of comparatively high heat content and transportability, are no longer 'cheap' commodities and have become so valuable that industry has widely undertaken serious conservation efforts.Currently, it appears that petroleum cost trends of the 1970s may not continue, at least in the near term, and that we may see somewhat reduced energy costs for a time. In the longer term , and certainly within the life spa n of major projects, however, it is generally believed to be inevitable that these fuels will be increasingly expensive . Energy costs are today a major operating cost for remote minerals processing plants and will remain so for the foreseeable future.In order to meet the economic challenge posed by high energy costs, future projects should be thoughtfully planned from the outset with the goal of minimizing energy requirements and maximizing the use of waste heat recovery to meet such requirements. There is also considerable potential for significant energy savings by retrofitting of existing installations."

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (Goldstrike) operates a six circuit (train) pressure oxidation plant for the pretreatment of gold bearing sulfide ores. The property is located 27 miles north of Carlin, Nevada. Since the commissioning and start-up of the first circuit in 1990 until the present total plant availabilities have exceeded 90%. The discussion that follows will detail the maintenance practices employed to consistently achieve this goal.

WHAT I would like to do is to talk for a while tonight about the Canadian mining industry in wartime-at least, the Canadian mining industry as viewed through the eyes of the Metals Controller. There is nothing quite like the Canadian system in the system of controls in the United States, because the Canadian Controller combines the functions of a good many of the organizations here. I think the nearest counterpart would be the Divisional Chiefs of the WPB-although they have perhaps less authority and operate in a somewhat narrower field. My own field, as you know, is the metals and minerals-all of them, as a matter of fact, with the exception of steel and iron and coal and oil. And as I am responsible for supplies not only from domestic sources but also from foreign sources, I exercise most of the functions of the WPB and some of the functions of the Board of Economic Warfare. As my department is also responsible for stock-piling and for the financing of new operations, I therefore exercise some of the functions of the Metals Reserve and also of the Defense Plants Corporation. Being an administrator under the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, I also have the same function in relation w the price of metals as the OP A. The Canadian system of controls is compact, relatively simple, and I believe reasonably efficient. I think two of the reasons for that are that both the Controllers and the Directors of production are clothed with very wide authority, and also the fact that all the buying for the three arms of the service is done through the Department of Munitions and Supply, of which we are a part.

"A “green” collector project has been initiated at Vale Base Metals Technology Development to replace xanthate. Bench and miniplant testwork showed comparable metallurgical results between xanthate and DTC (sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate), a “greener” collector. During the first DTC plant trial, a strong interaction between the process water and DTC negatively impacted the metallurgy. The subsequent investigation showed that the quality of process water including suspended solids and dissolved metal ions had a significant impact on the performance with DTC, while less so with PAX. This paper explains these differences using UV spectrophotometry and batch flotation tests. INTRODUCTIONVale Base Metals is dedicated to sustainable mining and mineral processing. One of the key activities is to find a “greener” collector to replace xanthate (PAX: potassium amyl xanthate), which decomposes during storage and flotation causing CS2 emissions in the work place. As the most promising candidate, DTC (sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate) was evaluated in the lab and miniplant (Dong & Xu, 2011). Consequently, a plant trial was conducted in the winter of 2010. However, the results were not as good as expected. The subsequent investigation showed that the quality of process water played a significant role in the metallurgical performance with DTC but less so with xanthate.From test work in 1996 and 1997, a series of batch tests were performed at Clarabelle Mill to investigate the winter/summer metallurgical shift with xanthate. As shown in Figure 1, the winter metallurgy was considerably worse than the summer metallurgy (Xu & Wilson, 2000). At 80% pentlandite recovery, the concentrate (Cu+Ni) grade was 21% in the winter and 26% in the summer. At 23% (Cu+Ni) concentrate grade, pentlandite recovery was 85% in the summer and 70% in the winter. In the summer, the process water is much cleaner, with very low concentrations of dissolved metals ions and suspended solids; while in the winter, the water is yellow and cloudy, with much higher suspended solids. Based on these results, it was concluded that the process water in winter has a detrimental impact on metallurgy."

"The copper smelting industry faces increasingly stringent environmental regulations and must continue driving innovation to reduce energy usage in its production chain. With the coming of age of ‘bottom-blowing’ copper technologies in China over the last decade, much renewed attention has been brought to tuyere bath smelting for clean copper-making. Since bottom-blowing sonic injection was originally developed and implemented in steelmaking in the 1970s and lead smelting in the 1990s, the time seems appropriate to revisit the sonic injection concepts and dispel some myths. After reviewing the trends in the copper industry and providing a brief historical context of research and development related to sonic injection, the author presents a comparison of the main submerged tuyere bath smelting technologies, namely the Noranda Reactor (NR), the Teniente Converter (TC), and the Chinese Bottom-Blowing Smelting Furnace (SKS/BBS) for copper, and the Queneau-Schuhmann-Lurgi Reactor (QSL) for lead. The core of this article, however, consists of a brief description of the fundamental theories for sonic injection (jetting regime) and ‘sonic flow mapping’ to illustrate the relationship between the minimum tuyere back-pressure required to achieve sonic flow and the tuyere internal diameter. The article also offers a comparison between side- and bottom-blowing in jetting regime before concluding with the author’s vision of the new trend in submerged tuyere bath smelting. IntroductionIn the last decade, developments in the copper smelting industry have been driven by two key concepts: (1) increasing cleaner smelting capacity to meet the world’s growing copper demand, as illustrated in Figure 1, and (2) increasing process off-gas capture to comply with more stringent environmental regulations and abide by a corporate social responsibility ethic of a clean work environment (for smelter employees) and clean air (for families living around smelters). The copper smelting industry has also faced some major challenges in the last few decades, including (1) low treatment and refining charges (TC/RC or processing fees) impacting custom smelters, (2) lower concentrate quality and grades with higher levels of impurities (e.g. As and Hg), (3) higher processing and transportation costs due to the rising cost of energy, (4) restrictions in process intensification (tonnage oxygen usage) due to furnace integrity limits, and (5) scarcity of educated and trained personnel due to fewer metallurgists graduating from pyrometallurgical school programmes combined with a high retirement rate of skilled workers."

Similarly to notions of constant capital/expenses in business or magnetization power for electric motors an energetic base load (E0) is always necessary to set up a mining process. Denominated as ?non-productive energy? or base load, (E0) is a constant component of the entire energy consumption of the process, while another component the ?productive energy? (Ep) is variable, being function of the production/throughput (M). By using these new concepts, the author creates an energetic model proposing a new method of assessing changes in mining processes (throughput) that can reveal possible energy savings (DSM component) or energy losses. Proposed mathematical model of assessing (E0) and energy savings by using ?Marginal Energy Usage Index? (MEUI) enables creation of historical benchmarks and direct on line energetic (efficiency) assessment of mining processes and/or equipments. The paper analyses the case of assessing possible energy savings that can be obtained by: ?? Improving efficiencies of various equipments (by retrofit) ? reducing E0 ?? Improving the process control or other process changes ? reducing Ep ?? Monitoring persistence of the adopted Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs). For the new plant design, the proposed method enables prediction of Customer Baseline in various mine/process configurations. The method could become part of a ?preventive action? in design process by offering a reliable tool of assessing additional financial effort (Incremental cost) when choosing various higher efficiency equipments and/or processes.

In a Bureau of Mines investigation of the dynamic compaction of mine hydraulic backfills, two basic forms of mechanical vibration inducers were used and compared for effectiveness of compaction. Internal compaction, using concrete probe vibrators of various sizes, and external compaction, using plate vibrators} were studied and evaluated for use in underground stopes. An aluminum plate, which was light and displaced sufficient volume to remain afloat in fluid fill, and a steel plate were both used in the external compaction tests. Efficiency of compaction was better in studies conducted with internal probe vibrators. Tests were conducted in an underground backfilled stope with three different-sized probe vibrators (2-, 4-, and 6-inch-diameter) to determine an approximate area of influence. Results showed the areas of influence to be approximately 3, 4, and 5 feet in diameter, respectively, for the three different probes. Physical properties of hydraulic slurries were determined; preferred grain-size distributions, water exudation properties, and water contents of hydraulic slurries are reported. The best compaction results were obtained with moderately well-graded, fully saturated backfills, with slow rates of water exudation, which were capable of remaining in a semifluid state during the compaction process.

Introduction The Hedley mine, perhaps better known as- the Nickel Plate mine, is one of the outstanding properties of southern British Columbia. Discovered in 1898 by Woollison and Arundell, prospectors, the property was bonded in 1899 to M. K. Rodgers for the Marcus Daly Estate, of Butte, and development was started the same year. From the high grade of the ore outcrop, and its colour, due to oxidation of the arsenopyrite, it was not difficult to open up and trace the showing. The Nickel Plate ore-shoot, which apparently had been easy to follow on surface, was more difficult to trace underground. In 1903, prospecting on an adjoining property, the Sunnyside, showed commercial ore at surface, but it was only after two years' work that the ore-body was defined and shipments started. From this property, $1,200,000 have been taken out. Prospecting was also carried on on the IXL, Climax, Copper Cliff, Mound, Bulldog, Exchange, Silver Plate, Gold Plate, and other properties, all of which had surface showings, but up to date only the Nickel Plate, Iron Duke, Morning, and Sunnyside have produced commercial ore. In 1904, the Bulldog looked like a very promising mine, but it failed to make good. In 1905, the Sunnyside No. 1 was in the limelight, but it also failed to make the grade. In 1906, an outcrop on the Sunnyside No. 3 looked interesting. Subsequent work. on this claim produced $840,000, and at the same time ore which yielded $400,000 was mined from the Sunnyside No. 4. In 1908, the Nickel Plate ore-body entered a lean zone and, as the diamond drill failed to give satisfactory results, the Daly Estate, after making a profit of $1,151,000, sold the property to the Hedley Gold Mining Company, Limited, for $760,000, retaining, however, a large interest.

In the late 1960's concerns about the natural environment reached high levels within North America and provided activists with suitable platforms for exerting influence over the general public and politicians. In response a host of regulatory mechanisms were developed, statutes, voluntary measures, land grants, codes of practices etc. Emerging environmental awareness from the era provided impetus for rapid technological change that encompassed all industries, especially the base metal business. The resulting clean up impacted all aspects of copper production, dealing with issues such as waste disposal, water and air quality with specific impact on emissions of sulfur dioxide and particulate. This paper provides a perspective of these changes reviewing the macro-economic impact of environmental movement in mining with its specific implications to the copper smelting industry. The fundamental challenges that were faced by the old, but capital-intensive North American plants and the approaches taken to deal with the changing times are reviewed with special emphasis on the conceptual approach to smelter S02 abatement and different paths taken in the USA and Canada. The role of economics, sustainable R&D and presence of technical infrastructure that facilitated the change process is elucidated, and speculations are made about the future state of pyrometallurgy and the natural environment.
