"The Kittilä underground mine in northern Finland is extracting one of the largest known gold deposits in Europe. Kittilä achieved commercial production on May 1, 2009, becoming Agnico Eagle’s first mine to open outside of Canada. The Kittilä orebodies were initially mined from two openpits – Suuri and Roura – and underground operations were added in October 2010. The pits were mined out in November 2012, so mining is now entirely underground in the Suuri and Roura deposits. Additional, small openpits will mine any remaining near-surface reserves in the future.The Kittilä Mine is located in the Lapland region of northern Finland, approximately 900 km (560 miles) north of Helsinki and 150 km (93 miles) north of the Arctic Circle. With a mine life estimated through 2034, Kittilä is Agnico’s longest-life mine.The mine’s proven and probable reserves contain 32 Mt (4.7 million oz) at 4.6 g/t (0.13 oz/ st) gold. Ore has been mined from underground since 2010. The original 3 kt/d (3,300 stpd) operation underwent an expansion project to increase the throughput capacity of the mill by 1 kt/d (1,100 stpd), starting by the end of 2014.The region around the Kittilä Mine is underlain by mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Kittilä Greenstone Belt oriented nearly vertical. This greenstone belt is similar to those hosting Agnico Eagle’s Canadian deposits in Quebec’s Abitibi region and Nunavut. At the contact point between ironrich and magnesium-rich rocks lies a 100- to 200- m (330- to 660-ft) thick structural zone known as the Suurikuusikko Trend. This trend hosts the Kittilä deposit, where multiple mineralized zones have been traced over a strike length of more than 25 km (15 miles).Most of Agnico Eagle’s work has focused on a 4.5-km (2-mile) segment of the Suurikuusikko Trend that hosts the five main zones of the known gold reserves and resources. From south to north they are: Ketola, Etela, Suuri, Roura and Rimpi.The ore at the Kittilä Mine is refractory, making gold extraction relatively difficult because the gold is generally locked inside the two main sulfide minerals – arsenopyrite and arsenic-rich pyrite. Only about 4 percent is very fine-grained “free gold” (not locked in sulfide grains) and easier to extract. Most of this free gold is found in the outer, oxidized or eroded sections of the ore."

During the past two years a computer program called "COPOR," Computerized Open Pit Optimization Routine, has been developed and used for mine planning of several base metal deposits. This routine utilizes a three dimensional computerized block model of an orebody, some economic parameters and operating constraints to locate the mineable or economic limits of the deposit schedule the yearly production from the mine and produce bench by bench ore reserve summaries and maps of the yearly and ultimate pit configurations. The moving cone method is used to perform these functions with a conventional block model. This model is conventional in the sense that each block is assumed to be homogenous; i.e., either ore or waste but not a mixture of the two. Due to the nature of a seam type deposit this approach is not realistic; therefore, revisions have been made to form a new version of the COPOR program. This version has been named "COALOR," Coal Optimization Routine. COALOR contains all of the power of the COPOR program but is equipped to handle the intricacies of coal seam type deposits. The deposit can be composed of a single seam or multiple seams which are horizontal or dipping at any angle. The numerous coal quality values can be incorporated to aid the optimization of the economic pit limits and yearly scheduling.

The East West Link road tunnels are proposed to provide a connection between the CityLink toll road and the Eastern Freeway north of the Melbourne CBD. The alignment passes from Moonee Ponds valley beneath the Upfield Line railway cutting, Royal Park, the historic Melbourne Cemetery and beneath Alexander Parade rising to an eastern portal at Hoddle Street. The western (Royal Park) part of the alignment passes through the folded and faulted Silurian Melbourne Formation, which has been subjected to deep weathering since the Triassic.The Melbourne Formation in the Royal Park area is mainly characterised by interbedded sequences of siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The beds are often graded and a clear boundary between the siltstone and fine-grained sandstone rock can be difficult to distinguish. Variation in lithology and the presence of structural geological features such as folds and faults have resulted in an irregular weathering profile within the Silurian rock; nonetheless the formation typically becomes less weathered with depth.Due to difficulties in obtaining reliable laboratory strength and stiffness relationships with weathering grade, in situ testing methods such as downhole shear wave velocity and high-quality pressuremeter testing are a useful aid to assessing appropriate geotechnical parameters for design.This paper presents an analysis of the variation in shear modulus of the Melbourne Formation, determined at small-strain (from downhole seismic data) and at ‘engineering scale’ strain (from pressuremeter tests) for extremely weathered (XW), highly weathered (HW) and moderately weathered (MW) rock. Estimates of small strain shear modulus (Go) obtained a range between 400 to 3400 MPa for these weathering grades. By comparison against the pressuremeter test data, reduction factors to be applied to these Go values to estimate shear moduli at engineering strain levels typically range between 0.10 and 0.35.The downhole geophysics undertaken in the Royal Park boreholes also suggests that there is an inversion in velocity between approximately 15 and 27?m depth below the top of the formation. This is thought to be related to the effects deep Plio-Pleistocene weathering, iron cementation of joints and increasing frequency of ‘non-healed’ joints in the transition from MW to slightly weathered (SW) rock.CITATION:Macklin, S, Schult, M, Terzic, Z and Chu, D, 2014. This study is organized under the auspices of the Metal/Nonmetal Diesel Partnership formed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the National Mining Association (NMA), the National Stone Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA), the United Steel Workers of America (USWA) and the MARG Diesel Coalition. The ultimate objective of the study is to reduce the exposure of underground miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM) and gases, and to help in fulfilling the partnership’s goal of identifying technically and economically feasible controls to curtail particulate matter emissions from existing and new diesel powered vehicles in underground metal and nonmetal mines. The majority of current knowledge on the performance of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and other control technologies is based on studies done under laboratory conditions, the results then being applied the results to on-highway vehicles. According to the best knowledge of the authors, only two comprehensive studies that were conducted recently at Noranda’s Bathurst Mining and Smelting Mine and International Nickel Company’s Stobie Mine under the sponsorship of the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program [McGinn 2001, Bugarski and Schnakenberg 2001, Bugarski and Schnakenberg 2002] offered some insight into the problems associated with the deployment of modern DPFs to underground mining vehicles. The U.S. mining industry has expressed concern that this rather limited knowledge base is not sufficient to help them comply with the rule limiting DPM exposure of underground metal and nonmetal miners [30 CFR 57.5060 2001]. The partnership agreed that a series of comprehensive field evaluations of DPFs in several underground mines was needed to determine their viability of DPF systems and establish confidence in their performance. The first in this series of studies was the one conducted in Stillwater Mining Company’s Nye Mine, Nye, Montana. This study was conducted in two phases. The objective of the first phase was to establish the effectiveness of the selected technologies in reducing diesel emissions by using an isolated zone methodology. The objective of the second phase was to assess the effectiveness of diesel particulate filters in controlling the exposure of underground miners in actual production scenarios. As part of the first phase of the study a series of tests were conducted at Nye Mine from May 19, 2003 until May 30, 2003. The results of Phase I of the study are presented in this report.

"Tungsten skarn deposits on the Clea property in the Selwyn Mountains, Y. T., are related genetically to a quartz monzonite stock, about 500 metres in diameter at the surface. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are metamorphosed for a distance of 3 km from the stock. Tungsten-bearing skarn mineralization within the altered sedimentary rocks is of two types: sulphide-rich pods and calc-silicate beds. The most significant scheelite concentration is in calc-silicate beds near or adjacent to the quartz monzonite stock. Discordant K-Ar and Rb-Sr isotopic dates indicate that the stock is probably of early Late Cretaceous age, 94 Ma or slightly older, and that it cooled slowly. High initial 87Srl86Sr ratios and disequilibrium relationships between K-jeldspar phenocrysts and groundmass minerals in the porphyritic phase of the granitic rock , and between different granitic rock specimens, indicate contamination of crystallizing magma by old sialic continental crust which extends westward under the Selwyn Basin.This study is significant to regional tungsten exploration. Granitic rocks associated with tungsten deposits, in this part of the Canadian Cordillera at least, appear to have specific isotope characteristics that indicate they were generated at a specific time and in a particular way.IntroductionThe Clea tungsten skarn property (Fig. I) is owned by Canex Placer Limited, and lies in the Selwyn Mountains (Bostock, 1948) near the eastern margin of the Selwyn Basin (Wheeler and Gabrielse, 1972), Yukon Territory. The property covers a 20-square-mile area centered near latitude 62°47 ' north and longitude 129°52' west, and is accessible by helicopter. An airstrip and the terminus of a summer-use gravel road at MacMillan Pass, Yukon, are about 20 miles to the northnorthwest.This paper deals mainly with the geochronemetry of granitic rocks from a stock associated with tungsten mineralization on the Clea property. We show that these rocks have specific characteristics that not only define the genesis of this stock, but also have significance for regional tungsten exploration around plutons in the Canadian Cordillera."

This report describes the engineering feasibility and economic advantages of using a mobile bridge-type cross-pit belt conveyor system in conjunction with a large dragline to excavate and transport spoils in a typical Western surface coal mine. The studies show that such a system could be built to survive operational and climatic mining conditions, and that its implementation would offer a reduction in both acquisition and operating costs versus conventional mining units of comparable rapacity. Reclamation costs can also be significantly reduced, and the total reclamation process accelerated, making the cross-pit conveyor system attractive to mine Owners and environmentalists alike.

The resistance of yielding rockbolts to multiple impact loads was tested by means of a drop hammer. The methodology was based on the ASTM D7401-08 standard as well as the requirements specified for rockbolts by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB – a Swedish mining company) and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee of South Africa (project number GAP 423). During the tests, the loading force and bolt elongation were measured with a sampling frequency of fs = 19.2 kHz. In order to analyse the phenomena involved, the tests were recorded using two independent high-speed video cameras (600 and 1000 frames per second) and one thermal camera (128 frames per second). The tests demonstrated that all the samples transferred double the gravitational potential energy of Ep = 50.85 kJ from the impact load of mass m = 2825 kg and impact velocity of v = 6.0 m/s without failure. Damage to the bolt-resin contact in the upper anchoring zone of the bolt in the steel tube occurred after subsequent impacts. As a result, the macro-deformed bolt exhibits additional yield, and its operation following the shearing of the resin bond is similar to that of a ‘cone bolt’. Only one test resulted in damage to the threaded bolt rod-nut coupling, during the fourth impact; however, no damage to the bolt-resin contact zone was observed.

"There is growing evidence that modern methods of mining coal increase the risk of spontaneous combustion. Seemingly unimportant at this time, this hazard could prove to be a barrier to growth and development of the coal industry in some areas of Canada. The paper presents bedrock knowledge on spontaneous combustion gathered by scanning and evaluating current technical and research literature. Special efforts have been made to identify significant coal and environmental factors and to establish criteria for susceptibility. In addition to the state-of-the-art knowledge, preliminary results from on-going studies are discussed."

Surface soil/spoil Samples (0-10 cm) from experimental test sites in western North Dakota were aseptically collected during August 1975 and each month (May through September) during 1076 and 1977. Selected samples were Cultured in a defined inorganic medium and after six weeks the algae were identified. Chlorophyll u content of the soil/spoil was used as a measure of the algal abundance. Soil physical-chemical properties, species variety and abundance were statistically analyzed. All test sites revealed distinct soil algal communities and demonstrated a successional trend as evidenced by significant increase, in species variety and bionmass over time. Some soil factors, calcium, copper, and phosphorus affected species variety and abundance at more than one situ. Others were important at specific sites; silicon and aluminum at the South Beulah test site; manganese sodium and zinc at the North Beulah test site No. 1 and boron, cadmium and magnesium at the North Beulah test site No. 2. Topsoiled areas had higher species varieties and abundances when compared with control areas, as did plots treated with amendments such as leonardite and fertilizer Generally.

T SEEMS almost sheer presumption to attempt' to discuss Russia in its present chaotic political and economic condition, and were it not that at least two certain absolute factors are continuously at work, it would be impossible to' even approach the subject with any degree of intelligence. These are the inborn love of peace of the people and the national character of the cooperative movement. The love of peace inborn in the soul of every Russian, the desire to be left alone and to- live his life among his home village surroundings, is probably one of the two greatest factors that will make the continuance of the present conditions of civil war impossible. One army or the other may sweep up and down the country. but the Russian peasant will: remain in his own village if not literally darken out. This love of peace is evidenced by the fact that there is no country where personal safety is greater than in Russia in normal times. I have traveled in many isolated parts, carrying considerable sums of money and persolial equipment that; in itself, would be a fortune to any peasant, and have never even encountered a condition in which the most wildly imaginative person looking for adventure, 01: trouble, could muster up even a suspicion of fear. This statement applies also to Southern Siberia and Northern Turkestan, which are inhabitated by the nomadic tribes of Khirghese origin.

"GeneralGIANT ORE is complex, with the gold values for the most part occurring in extremely close association with arsenopyrite, stibnite, jamesonite, and a wide group of antimonial minerals locally termed 'the grey minerals'. Pyrite is the most abundant of the sulphide minerals• and minor quantities of chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite also occur. Pyrrhotite has been found in some sections of the mine, but to date none of it has been nickeliferous. Native gold occurs in varying amounts throughout the ore bodies.In 1944, ore dressing investigations were commenced on diamond-drill core rejects and samples of surface outcrop ore. Results soon indicated that treatment to produce satisfactory recovery of the gold values would involve fine grinding to 80-85 per cent minus 200 mesh, recovery of free gold by jigs, followed by flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrate, and subsequent cyanidation of the calcine. Proceeding from this information, the flow-sheet was prepared, plant design worked out, equipment purchased, and construction of the treatment plant commenced in May, 1947.The crushing, grinding, and flotation units of the plant were rushed to completion and commenced operation on May 12th, l.948, at 225 tons of ore per day. This rate was maintained until January 27th, 1949, when the Allis-Chalmers roaster and cyanide plants were completed and commenced operation. During the period May 12th, 1948, to January 27th, 1949, gold recovered by amalgamation was the sole source of revenue. Flotation concentrate was stockpiled pending the completion of the Allis~Chalmers roaster and cyanide plants."

AS a result of drilling operations during 1943, West Texas again added sufficient new oil reserves to replace the oil produced during the year, but failed to maintain its position in currently available reserves because the deeper discoveries will require years for development. Drilling failed to provide the additional oil necessary to meet the increase in current and anticipated market demand. Although 13.3 per cent of the total footage drilled was in wildcat exploration, the ratio of oil discoveries to total wildcats was less in 1943 than in 1942, but comparable to that in 1941. Of the 732 field wells completed, 270 were at Slaughter, 55 at Wasson, 45 at Mascho and 31 at North Cowden. As of Dec. 31, 1943, there were 361 drilling wells including 71 wildcat and 290 field wells; 19.7 per cent were wildcats. It is anticipated that the percentage of wildcats of the total wells will be higher during 1944 than in either 1942 or 1943. Tables 3 and 4 present a three-year comparison of drilling activity and illustrate the downward trend of development that has been in effect during that time. Because of development lag in the deeper Ordovician fields, several years elapse before 2 sufficient number of wells is completed to give a substantial producing rate. As these new oil reserves cost more to find, and will cost more to produce on a barrel basis than the oil marketed during the year, their reserve replacement value to the industry is less in money. Costs While complete costs for deeper drilling are not yet available for analysis, it is evi- dent from the data on drilling rates to comparable depths, contract prices, and general increases in costs, that the cost of drilling has risen approximately 20 per cent during the year. One representative drilling contractor estimates that the average drilling time on a 5000-ft. field well has increased nearly one third and that out-of-pocket costs have increased a dollar per foot. Three major factors contribute to this increased cost: (I) less experienced labor, (2) deterioration in mechanical equipment and expendable material, and (3) increased contract prices. In the past, when there were more drilling rigs than wells to be drilled, some contractors would cut their drilling profit to keep their personnel and rigs working. As this practice is no longer necessary, the contract prices are adjusted upward to assure a profit. On deep and difficult drilling, contracts are let on a cost plus basis. A number of mechanical difficulties have become evident. Inferior quality of steel used in drill pipe and rock bits has added appreciably to drilling time and cost. Contractors are experiencing delay in obtaining repair work and repair parts for prime movers. As the length of drilling time required an shallow-field wells has not increased in proportion to that on deeper wells, it seems that the medium-sized drilling rig is better adapted mechanically than the heavy one to the work imposed. One of the main deficiencies in the heavy rig equipment is inadequate pump capacity. The “BIOMOre” project aims to prove the technical feasibility of indirect in situ bioleaching of sulfide minerals contained in a deep underground deposit, by bringing together the disciplines required to make a success. The underground location in Poland was provided by project partner KGHM inside an operating copper mine. Key components of this project were the design and construction of a pilot plant, and its operation in an underground environment. This project also included a ∼250 t (100 m3) fragmented rock reactor hydraulically connected to the pilot plant. The pilot plant consisted of several tanks and pumps, a fluidised bed ferric iron generating bioreactor containing immobilised acidophilic iron oxidation biomass, and all the required instrumentation and utilities. Before the bioleaching phase could start, the rock reactor had to be flushed continuously firstly with water to remove chloride salts that are corrosive and also harmful for the bacteria used in the bioreactor, and secondly, with sulfuric acid solution to react with the carbonates present in the ore matrix. This paper summarizes the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of the pilot plant.

"The effect of the quenching rate on age hardening in an Al-6.0mass%Zn-0.75mass%Mg alloy sheet was investigated. The quenching rates and aging conditions were as follows: water quenching (WQ) or furnace cooling (FC) followed by pre-aging at 20°C,then artificial aging at 120, 160 or 200°Cwere performed. The peak strength of the FC and the WQ are very similarat120°C aging. It is important high strength was obtained even at the extremely slow quenching rate. On the other hand, the strength of the WQ significantly decreased compared to the FCat200°C aging. GP(I) zones were formed during the pre-aging at 20°C even if the cooling rate was very slow like the FC, and were transformed into the GP(II) ones at 70°C or higher and then into the ?’ phase. However, these zones were dissolved by reversion during heating to 200°C. Thus the strength of the WQ decreased. On the other hand, it is considered that an unknown cluster or GP zone with a thermal stability formed during the FC was not dissolved up to 200°C and was transformed into the ?’ phase. Therefore, a higher strength was obtained in the FC for the200°Caging.INTRODUCTIONAl-Zn-Mg alloys are widely available in commercial production because these alloy have lower quench sensitivity and can be produced by air cooling (AC). Heat treatable aluminum alloys are usually produced by water quenching (WQ) to increase their strength because a high cooling rate inhibits the precipitation of the stable phase during cooling and increases supersaturated solute atoms. However, Baba(1967)reported the strength of an Al-6%Zn-1.8%Mg(mass%) alloy without additional elements quenched by very slow cooling (15°C/min) was 96% of that quenched by WQ. Furthermore,the age hardening at room temperature (RT) occurs after annealing at 410°C followed by furnace cooling (FC, 0.5ºC/min or less)in these alloys. Therefore, the process of annealing at 410 to 430°C for 120 min followed by AC, and reheating at 230°C for 240 min, then cooling is recommended in the specifications (Japan Aluminum Association, 2011). Matsuda and Yoshida(1996)also recommended annealing at 300°C for Al-Zn-Mg alloy extruded products to inhibit age hardening at RT by precipitating the solute atoms and decreasing them in the matrix. It has been considered that the higher the content of excess quenched-in vacancy becomes by WQ, the higher aging rate at RT is obtained. Therefore,it is theoretically and commercially important to clarify the reason why the age hardening occurs relatively quickly in almost no excess quenched-in vacancies such as the FC, and why the same strength as the WQ can be obtained in the FC"

Frothers play a crucial role in sulphide and PGM ore flotation recovery, and AECI Mining Chemicals studies on PGM ores have shown significant flotation kinetic increases with the optimal frother-collector combinations. Using Senfroth 200 as the industry baseline, remarkable kinetic increases were observed with AECI Mining Chemicals developed frothers in the first concentrate. Even in the worst-case scenarios, 4E PGM recovery increased by 5% at a slightly higher concentrate grade. It is important not to limit frother dosage to a fixed value. Instead, enough frother should be added to maintain a stable bench float, measuring the dosages by frother volume before and after tests. Frothers can be specialized blends and their importance should not be underestimated. The results produced by formulating and innovating frothers to address specific industry challenges have been encouraging. Testing a frother on a plant scale does not have to be as daunting as with collectors, enabling the identification of the best frother-collector combinations at an industrial scale. AECI Mining Chemicals bench scale testwork has motivated plant-scale trials that have successfully transitioned to commercialization. This paper compares the results from metallurgical and froth stability tests and shows that occasionally frothers that have a less stable froth can have improved valuable mineral recoveries, while still exhibiting better drainage for reduced entrainment and mass pull. It was shown that caution should be used when relying only on simplified froth stability tests in the evaluation of new frothers.

The course has been broadened in scope, revised, and brought up to date and is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and non-metallic mines. These circulars are as follows: Injury Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on injuries from accidents at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the use of investigations and reports of all injuries.

"IntroductionTHE ZINC-BASE die casting alloys in common usage contain approximately 4 per cent aluminum as the major alloy element. In addition, they contain about 0.05 per cent Mg .and may• have a small amount .of copper. These are usually the only •elements intentionally present.Small amounts of some impurities have been shown to have a deleterious effect on the properties of these alloys and therefore the impurities are kept low by starting with '99.99%' zinc.The reasons for holding the aluminum content at 4 per cent are not clear. Some statements appear in the literature that higher aluminum increases the brittleness, but probably the chief reason was the relative price of zinc and of aluminum when 4% alloys became firmly established. At that time, aluminum was three to four times the price •of zinc on a weight •basis. Recent prices, roughly equivalent per lb., make aluminum considerably cheaper than zinc on a volume basis and suggest that increased aluminum content would result in a decrease in the cost per piece due to the lower density of the alloy.Little information could be found in the literature and, therefore, it was decided to determine some physical properties of the higher aluminum zinc-base alloys made from high-purity zinc."
