Outotec Direct Blister Flash Smelting technology has proved to be an efficient and environmentally friendly way to treat copper concentrates from the Zambian Copperbelt at Konkola Copper Mines' (KCM) Nchanga smelter in Zambia. The modeling of slag chemistry and thermodynamics with MTDATA software played a central role in deciding the operation parameters for the smelter. Outotec FSF Online Process Advisor is used to calculate the process parameters and to give valuable information of the process state for the operating personnel. The pre-calculated slag liquidus graphs are also integrated to the Online Advisor.

Rather like the mythical "Economic Man" "an employer" in this context must necessarily be an abstraction, and the views possessed by such an abstraction, a composite of many views known to have been expressed. Not even the complex Conciliation and Arbitration legislation in this country provides any helpful specifications, except in one peculiar particular. The Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Act provides an almost totally tautological definition, except in that one oddity referred to above. It is this : "An employer means any employer in any industry, and includes any person who is usually an employer in an industry, and also includes a Club." No doubt there is some perfectly justifiable reason for such specific and unique particularity in an otherwise meaning- less definition. That need not trouble us in this exercise.

In a tailings storage facility, the chemistry of pore water is a function of oxidation and dissolution of sulfide minerals, containing metals and metalloids, the neutralising effect of gangue minerals and the geochemical processes controlling solute equilibria such as pH, redox potential, precipitation, ion exchange and adsorption. On the other hand, the changes in geochemical composition of tailings feed over time is a function of spatial variability within the orebody and modifications in processing method. Tailings properties such as pyrite content, pH, concentration of deleterious elements, surface chemistry, pore water chemistry and particle size are already shaped in the dynamic environment of a process plant.To engineer desired environmental outcomes, a new research framework is needed. The new approach should follow the physical and geochemical processes of tailings feed and construct models that can be used for the prediction of seepage water quality and dust propagation and evaluate the potential re-processing of tailings or production of tailings with desirable surface chemistry, particle size and internal structure. The challenge of developing tailings engineering model is not in laboratory techniques, but more of the overall communication of results and establishing the link between disciplines. It requires investigating geochemistry across mining and processing for improved environmental outcomes at tailings storage facilities.The paper reviews the current tailings management practices by comparing the geochemistry and mineralogy of tailings and the chemistry of seepage water from three Australian case studies in the context of geology, mineral processing and climate. Some alternative methods of tailings management are also reviewed and it is concluded that a proactive multi-disciplinary approach is needed with respect to tailings management, based on a novel integrated research framework.CITATION:Edraki, M, Forsyth, B, Baumgartl, T and Bradshaw, D, 2012. It is globally recognised that existing and emerging mining activities should be conducted in a æsustainableÆ manner for the entire life of mine. Many companies annually publish corporate sustainability reports to demonstrate their actions in accordance with international expectations. This concept of sustainable mining practices also applies to mine water management, with influences often extending beyond site operations, affecting surrounding catchments and community users. This paper explores differences in conceptual and operational terms of æsustainableÆ mine water management within the Philippines. Outcomes of a review of corporate sustainability reports, governance documentation, research programs, and stakeholder knowledge acquired through action-research workshops are presented. The paper aims to inform and support future capacity building exercises delivered by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC), with outcomes tailored to government officials and policy makers of developing countries. There is no conclusive data and because of its extreme importance to the Free World, the subject is greatly discussed. Opinions range from those presented by Paul Tyler in his article "Russia's Mineral Potential," June issue of MINING ENGINEERING to those of Norman C. Stines, presented herewith. Mr. Stines is a consulting mining engineer of Los Gatos, Calif. He was in Russia, China, and Manchuria from 1909 to 1918 as a mining executive. From 1917 to 1919 he served as assistant military attache Intelligence Branch U. S. Army in Petrograd, Russia.

N. A. Degerstrom, Inc. has constructed and operated a processing plant approximately five miles north of Soda Springs, Idaho for processing a byproduct phosphate treater dust from Monsanto's elemental phosphorus plant, also located in Soda Springs. The plant is designed to produce agricultural-grade phosphoric acid, gallium, and silver. The design capacity of the plant is 54.4t (60 st) of treater dust per day, which can produce 16,326t (18,000 st) of phosphoric acid, 6,600 kg of gallium, and 6,033 kg (194,000 oz.) of silver per year.

THE distinction btween price reduction as a re-sult of lowering of production cost and price re-duction through unrestricted competition cannot be made too clear, because they are often interwoven in actual experience. Take the whole population of a town whose principal industry is shoe manufacturing as a concrete example. If the manufacturer is able to cut his price per pair in half because he has found out how to make a pair at half the cost, he will com-monly let a number of his men go, because reduction in production cost usually results from substituting cheap mechanical energy for expensive human energy. These people will normally find other employment. The workmen who remain employed usually earn more in dollars than they did before, and in spending it give employment where there was less before. Mining companies that initiate considerable enter-prises in foreign lands where the economic level is low, and where most of the people are busily but in-efficiently engaged in raising enough food to support themselves and their families, often find themselves confronted with an acute labor problem. If any con-siderable number of workers leave the land to work in and about the mines, those left on the land cannot raise enough food to keep them all unless they are taught better methods of agriculture and provided with equipment that will enable them to produce more with less expenditure of effort. Add to this the fact that managers commonly find that the "natives," as our British cousins designate them, usually need more food and a better balanced diet than they have been accustomed to in order to show anything above the lowest order of efficiency in industrial work,. and it is clear that to make a new industry possible in what may be termed an economic province involves increas-ing the productivity, not only of those who are em-ployed in it, but of the whole social group. It has already been pointed out that the employ-ment of large numbers of men in automobile manu-facture is only possible because the others have in-creased their productivity enough to turn out every-thing else that is needed without the help of the auto-mobile workers.

"THE GOLD MINING REGION of Timmins - Val d'Or, astride the Ontario-Quebec border, has long suffered the effects of rising costs during the period when the U.S. price of gold was fixed at $35 per ounce. The federal government, through such assistance programs as that set up under the Emergency Gold Mining Assistance Act (E.G.M.A. ) in 1948, has subsidized the gold mining communities of Canada for a total of over $300 million to March 31, 1972. Of this, the Timmins - Val d'Or ""gold belt"" has received more than twothirds, almost $220 million. In spite of these continuous subsidies, only 12 gold mines are still producing in the Timmins - Val d'Or belt, whereas 71 mines have received subsidies for some period since 1948. The vital question is how the communities previously supported principally by the mining of gold will survive in the long run, as many of the older mines either are already depleted or are quickly becoming so. With the rising price of gold on the 'free market in recent months, prospects look a little brighter for the time being. Even with the increased official price of U.S. $38, which made the maximum government subsidized price about $48 per ounce, gold mines have not sold any gold to the government since January 1972 and some stopped doing so months before that. The populace of the region has not been enthusiastic about relocation nor about extensive retraining programs in the past and probably will not be in the future. So, when the remaining gold mines become depleted, the old problems of community depression will remain."

A general computer program is given for the linear elastic static analysis of complex structural systems. These elements have special advantages for the analysis of massive underground structures such as mine structures and above ground structures such as arch dams. New finite elements are developed which are useful in the analysis of two and three dimensional solids. Examples are given which illustrate the accuracy of the elements. A description on the use of the program and a FORTRAN IV listing are given in the Appendices.

BECAUSE of the impetus given to placer mining since the price of gold was advanced to $35, several types of small dredges have made their appearance, especially in the Lincoln and Oroville areas of California. Some of these are known as "doodle bugs," and have been given considerable publicity, though many believe their performance has been overrated and that complete costs of construction and operation, if known would not put them in so favorable a light. Fig. 1 is a doodle bug owned by E. M. Clark and operated near Lincoln, Calif. It is understood that it was abandoned because of inability to handle deep ground. A similar machine that has been operated-profitably by Comstock Placers is shown in Fig. 2.

The market requirements which strip processing lines have to deal with have altered significantly within the last decades. Particularly, the production has to be economical and ecological efficient and processing lines have to cover a broad product portfolio. Already existing plants either directly or indirectly are competing with new plants, which are equipped with the latest technologies. The “Special Strip Processing Equipment” is designed to be integrated easily and within small downtime phases in existing lines. All single machines can be delivered in short time “ready-to-perform” with a tested and proved automation system. Thus, the competitiveness of existing lines can be increased immediately with less effort. To find out which machines can be reasonably implemented SMS group offers an “Efficiency Check”. A special proceeding is used by experts to find out quickly which machines will have the largest effect on the efficiency of the line while demanding at the same time the smallest expense.

This report describes the demonstration of longwall mining in a seam dipping 27 to 34'. Equipment was selected on the basis of capability, compatibility, and co t. Snowmass, Bureau of Mines, consultants and manufacturers were involved in the selection process. The equipment arrived in early 1981, prior to completion of development for the first panel; therefore, the equipment was operated on the surface for training. The surface training paid off with a fast, efficient installation and start-up of the face. The longwall equipment operated very well on the steep pitch with an average equipment downtime of 21.9[9]. Coal handling outby the face was a problem which caused an additional downtime of 19.5%. Development for the panels proved to be the major problem in the economics of longwall mining on a steeply dipping seam. During the first 9 months of operation the longwall averaged 71.9 TPMS and development averaged 0.6 TPMS for an overall average of 14.1 TPMS. Had mining continued, timing of development would have been another major problem. Monitoring of subsidence, pillar stability and shield loading was done in connection with mining, but little useful information was gained from the monitoring.

There are compelling reasons for us to look to our Country's Western coal. Despite its inherent low BTU content, Western coal's low sulphur content provides a near-ideal answer to satisfy our in- dependent goals of clean air and self-sufficiency in energy. Vast reserves, thick seams and amenability to low-cost strip mining serve as a powerful economic basis for its viability as a primary and dependable source of energy for the coming decades. A major consideration, the solution of which may not be quite obvious, is transportation cost. These abundant deposits are remote from the utilities of the heavily populated eastern regions of the United States (Figure 1). A Western coal mine in Montana is likely 1500 miles or more from an eastern power plant. The comparable distance to an eastern coal mine may be only 200 miles. Thus, the question is: How can the haulage cost of our Western coal be substantially reduced to an acceptable level? If resolved, western reserves of coal will be one of the key solutions to satisfying our Nation's energy needs.

There is no startling revelation to the fact that the mining industry as a whole is generally moving toward the use of larger equipment to process ores in quantities far greater than what was even considered a decade ago. Trucks and shovels have led the way in extra large machines and many other manufacturers have followed suit in the development of so-called "supers" in their line of equipment. In order to keep pace with the industry, crusher manufacturers have also enlarged the size of their equipment. There is now on the market, a Gyratory crusher capable of accepting a 72" diameter piece of ore. Primary jaw crushers have also increased in size. It is inevitable, therefore, that larger secondary cone crushers would also be required to complement the other equipment used to process these large quantities of ore. This super-size secondary cone crusher is the SYMONS 10 Ft. Cone Crusher. Until 1973, the largest cone crusher built was the 7 Ft. Extra Heavy Duty crusher, which is currently used in the majority of the mining operations throughout the world. The 10 Ft. crusher, when compared to the 7 Ft. Extra Heavy Duty Crusher, is approximately 1-1/2 times larger in physical dimensions; three times heavier; will accept a maximum feed size which is approximately twice as large; and will crush at approximately 2-1/4 times the rate of the 7 Ft. machine at identical closed side settings. It will be the largest cone crusher built in the world. At the present time, Rexnord's Nordberg Machinery Group has accepted an order for two 10 Ft. Standard cone crushers to be delivered to an iron ore mine in South Africa in early 1975.

The Scully Mine, situated in the Labrador Trough near the Quebec-Labrador boundary, is one of the world's largest continuous ore deposits. This paper outlines the sequence of the mining operations from the planning stages to the delivery of the ore to the crusher at an average rate of 50,000 tons per day, 7 days per week. The principal equipment required to maintain this production rate includes four 12.\1.1-inch rotary drills, seven 8-cu.-yd electric shovels and a fleet of large haulage trucks. Particular attention is given to grade control, programmed by computer, drilling and blasting techniques and operational aspects inherent with open-pit mining in Canada's North.

DOES mining pay? Inasmuch as the whining of minerals from Nature is one of the world's principal sources of new wealth, this question is of general economic interest but it is obviously of even more vital concern to investors and those engaged in mining. In a previous article on "Wage Costs in the Mineral Industries,' published in the November issue, I attempted to show that wages paid workers on the job accounted for, roughly, 50 per cent of the mine dollar. Salaries normally range over 5 per cent - lower for large metal mines but higher in stone quarries and minor nonmetallic min. in, industries. Purchases of supplies, materials. fuel, and power generally aggregate within the range of 15 to 25 per cent of total receipts, with the average well under 20 per cent. It's indeed a pleasure for me to speak to you today about the development and operation of large-scale surface coal mining projects in the western United States. It is an exciting story about American business working to solve a critical national problem -- the energy shortage -- through research, new technologies, financial innovation, and imaginative management. The North American Coal Corporation -- the second largest independent mining company and ninth largest United States coal producer -- is proud to be a part of this story. Our operations in North Dakota reflect the coal industry's Western activities. So, today, I would like to focus on our planned involvement in that state. I'll briefly survey why North American is developing large- scale surface mining in North Dakota, and I will outline the many problems associated with this coal development and how we are working to solve them. Finally, I will look at the financial and management techniques we are using to make it all work. In short, I'm going to present a case study of Western coal mining. Let's begin by looking at the reasons we are in North Dakota. The United States Bureau of Mines estimates that 44 per cent of the nation's total recoverable coal deposits underlie the three Northern Great Plains States of North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. We estimate that North Dakota alone has about 25 billion economically surface-mineable tons of coal with today's technology. North Dakota has the energy that could keep our factories running and our homes lighted In the years ahead.

The work on synthetic mica and related subjects is being reported in a series of technical articles (see Supplementary Bibliography), each of which describes some special aspect of the subject. This is the final report on chemical analysis of the fluoride-containing silicates. A condensation of this report has been published (26).3/ Chemical analysis affords one of the best means of ascertaining the final com-position of either a heterogeneous mass or a single pure crystal, particularly where some constituents may be volatile. The analysis of fluoride-containing silicates was not so well known or understood that highly accurate results were commonplace. For example, on synthetic mica a university laboratory reported 11.6 and 9.2 percent fluoride when at least 13.3 and 11.3 percent were present, respectively; a commercial testing laboratory reported 9.14 percent as compared to 12.6 percent; and a glass company reported 7.0 percent as compared to 9.0 percent present. No intimation is made that these analysts could not have done better, but the point to be stressed is that the methods in use were long, tedious, and generally required a certain familiarity for best results.

Today, it can be said that the majority of mines utilise communications equipment in one form or another. Either for communications between staff making their day-to-day operations more efficient, or for emergency communications, as well as linking computer based mine management systems, and providing remote control over complex mobile and fixed machinery. With the advances in technology now available, we are moving into the next generation of mine communications equipment, using digital communications in the underground mine environment. It is a proven fact that an efficient underground mine communications system can help maximise production, by providing major gains in areas such as equipment and manpower utilisation, staff and vehicle tracking, reaction times to break downs and emergencies. In this paper we will describe some of the facilities that are currently available, as well as what will soon be available to mining and tunnelling companies around the world.
