"This paper presents the utilization of slurry walls methods for the recent remediation of three high hazard active dams in the United States. Tuttle Creek Dam, located in Manhattan, KS, required seismic retrofit. To this extent, transverse shear walls were installed on the downstream slope using self-hardening slurry (SHS) to reinforce the liquefiable foundation soils. Herbert Hoover Dike, located around Lake Okeechobee, FL, is subject to potential failure because of internal erosion, piping and slope instability at high water levels. The innovative use of the hydromill equipment with SHS allowed the successful construction of the cutoff wall through heterogeneous soils and rock. At Bolivar Dam, located in Bolivar, OH, under-seepage negatively affects the structural stability of the dam, and a partial seepage barrier wall is required through the upstream slope of the dam. In this case, the Contractor selected the plastic concrete seepage barrier, excavated by a combination of clamshell and hydromill equipment. The main features of the three projects are summarized in Table 1. IntroductionTuttle Creek Dam was constructed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) on the Big Blue River in North-East Kansas in the 1950s for flood control. Tuttle Creek Dam is a zoned earthfill embankment, 7,500 ft long and about 137 ft high with a crest width of 50 ft (Fig. 1). It is located in an area of moderate seismicity associated with an old continental rift zone located just to the east of the dam. The USACE, under the Dam Safety and Assurance Program, determined the need for remediation. Site investigations and geotechnical analyses identified the upper alluvial foundation sands as being susceptible to liquefaction when subjected to the Maximum Credible Earthquake.In 2005, USACE awarded a construction-manager-at-risk/early Contractor involvement contract. The USACE and the Contractor closely cooperated to identify the most effective technologies, materials and configurations to be used in the remediation. The original remediation design required both the upstream and downstream slope stabilization of liquefiable foundation. Results of refined seismic deformation analyses revealed that the stabilization of the downstream slope and toe was needed to protect the downstream seepage control system and to provide assurance that a liquefaction-induced flow slide would not occur (Stark et al., 2012)."

Few important improvements other than the development of cracking processes were made in technical petroleum refining from 1914 to 1919. Refiners were concerned mainly with enlarging their plants and erecting new plants to meet the growing demand for petroleum products. Shell stills operated as a unit or arranged in series for progressive or continuous distillation were the prevailing distillation equipment. Some improvement was made in condensers, but in most refineries of the period coils of pipe immersed in tanks of water were used to condense vapors and cool liquid products of the stills. Heat exchangers to conserve heat and reduce costs were more highly developed at California topping plants than at other plants. In this connection Wadsworth3/states: It is regretted that information concerning the operation of topping plants with eastern and Middle West oils is not available. The writer carefully canvassed the Middle West, but did not find a plant where operation had progressed beyond the early experimental stages and reliable figures could be furnished.

Four Ca-bentonitic clays from Alabama were evaluated for use in Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) or Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) fertilizer suspensions. The viscosity and gel strength of suspensions prepared with different proportions of a Western bentonite clay and sodium exchanged Alabama clays, were measured as a function of clay content and dispersant concentration. The results obtained suggested that three of the Alabama Ca-bentonites would replace about 40% of the more expensive Western bentonite in UAN and DAP fertilizer suspensions. The performance of the Na-modified clays, prepared according to the TVA soda ash method, was as good or even better than those observed for the Mg-, Na/Mg-or K-modified clays. The TVA clay modification procedure appears to be reliable and cost effective.

EMR is equivalent to reporting Mineral Resource additional to Mineral Reserve, which has been permitted in jurisdictions outside the US for many years. Since March 28, domestic producer prices on 99.5 percent aluminum ingot have been at 5l¢ per pound. Dealers in this same time frame have held ingot quotes at 49¢-50.5¢ per pound. COBALT: Imports from southern Africa in 1976 constituted 73 percent of total cobalt imports. Moreover, the United States is 98 percent dependent on imports of cobalt. For this reason, the Bureau of Mines is closely monitoring developments abroad to ensure an advance notice of any possibility of a shortfall in supply. Included in these imports were those from Zaire (41 percent directly from Zaire and 15 percent via Belgium-Luxembourg), Zambia (11 percent), and Botswana (6 percent). Also being closely watched are industry stocks.

"INTRODUCTION For a number of years, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests on various types of structures to ascertain the effect of seismic vibrations emanating from quarry blasting in an effort to determine an index of damage. Associat¬ed with these tests, occasional records were made of the characteristics of the air blast or concussion from the explosions. Although the importance of the air-blast problem was recognized, the equipment was not designed for airblast measurements, nor was the early research program concerned with the problem. After the ground-vibration tests had been completed, attention was turned to study of the air blast and its effect. The program was modified, however, in certain aspects by the imminence of war and the final entry of the United States into the conflict. These modifications were made to supply information pertaining to military and civilian defense problems.Detailed discussion of these problems is beyond the scope of this report, which attempts to present preliminary results of factual and fundamental character. However, it may be noted that airblast data are urgently needed for intelligent design of both Government and non-Government buildings, which must withstand the air blast from bombs and afford maximum protection for the occupants. The safety of vital equipment above and below ground necessitates consideration of damage from air blast. Protection against use of dynamite by saboteurs, moreover, hinges largely on the effect of air blast. Identification of a planned ""accident"" involving dynamite often entails knowledge of the characteristics and power of the airblast.The peacetime problem of damage from air blast resulting from quarry and mining blasting activities is of course exaggerated by the wartime requirements of increased production accelerated operation, and enlarged development."

The mining industry has expanded significantly in the Pacific Region over the past two decades through a mix of new developments and brownfields expansions of existing operations. Despite this overall success there are also a number of well publicised examples of less than successful minerals ventures. These problem developments highlight the fact that success cannot be taken for granted and that rigorous planning and attention to detail is essential. The dominant growth has come through expansion of existing businesses, notably alumina, iron ore and coal, achieved through both efficiency gains on existing plant and step change capacity additions such as new mines and/or expanded processing plant. This expansion has largely been linked to increased market opportunities. The major issues are the quality and extent of the host resource, achieving the market targets, and the efficiency of the expansion effort. There can be also a range of site specific issues which need to be addressed. The development of new greenfields operations is often more complex as it can bring a wide range of new issues. Depending on the nature of the development, and the companies involved, these can extend from initial financing through to obtaining a market position. Incorporating major new technology and/or establishing infrastructure and attracting staff to remote locations can also add significant challenges. This paper outlines many of the critical factors which need to be considered prior to proceeding with major expansions or greenfields developments. These will be linked to a number of developments in the region over the past decade.

Future nuclear reactor systems such as a sodium-cooled fast reactor are being designed under severe conditions in terms of operating temperature and irradiation fluence compared to current commercial reactors. For realization of such systems, it is necessary to develop an advanced structural material having both high strength and irradiation resistance at high temperatures. Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel is considered as one of the most promising structural material because of its excellent creep and irradiation resistance on the basis of uniformly distributed nano-oxide particles with a high density. Up to now, ODS steels have been intensively studied and developed to apply these materials to the in-core structural component of future nuclear systems. Several advanced ODS steels were designed and fabricated by a mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and hot extrusion processes. This study focuses on the effects of heat treatment parameters during the fabrication process parameters on the microstructures of ODS steels for future nuclear system applications.

"The City of Ottawa’s Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel consists of two interconnected tunnels totaling 6.2 km with a diameter of 3m including access shafts and hydraulic structures which connect to the City’s most critical sewers. This tunnel will be built 15m to 30m below ground in the downtown core adjacent to, and crossing below, the Light Rail Tunnel, which introduces additional considerations in terms of sequencing and risk mitigation. The City embarked on a unique Procurement Process to address the risks involved with a large tunnel project and those associated with tunneling below downtown, underneath and adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and connecting to live critical sewers. This paper describes the unique procurement approach employed and the contractual risk mitigation measures developed to provide the best value while minimizing risk. Specific features include Market Sounding, using a Fairness Commissioner, Contractor Prequalification and Risk Mitigation Measures in the Tender documents. INTRODUCTION This paper describes how the City of Ottawa (the City) and the project design team developed a strategic Procurement Process and Tender that incorporated industry best practices for technical and contractual risk management for the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project. The process was unique in that, while it employed a systematic review of project risks, it also solicited input from industry, stakeholders and provincial and federal partners to develop the request for Tender for this traditional design-bid-build project. Key drivers for this approach were initiated from the City’s concerns for cost control, cost certainty and overall project risk mitigation. To address these concerns, the City implemented the risk review and mitigation process right from the project design team selection. It was critical that the project design team embraced this risk management philosophy and carried it through each phase of the project. This paper serves as an excellent resource for municipalities or other owners embarking on a similar tunnel project, on how to properly apply industry best practices and the benefits of using them."

With the ever increasing demand for commodities, due to changes in lifestyle and increase in population, people are striving to find ways to keep up. Mining is one essential element in the solution. Though being a powerful boost to a country?s economy, mining can have disastrous effects in the absence of waste management practice and technologies; because of the harmful heavy metals and toxic chemical waste that is generated as a by-product in mining operations. It is an established and documented fact that pollution is a major concern for communities having to live with it. Disproportionate water consumption significantly impacts local rivers and ponds thereby reducing freshwater availability and have given rise to social conflict. In light of these misgivings, management and treatment of mine water and waste has gained considerable attention recently. In this paper, we summarize some of the treatment methods that can be adopted by mining companies to reduce their environmental footprint. Appropriate treatment solutions depend on various factors including available space and capital cost for treatment solutions, type of mining waste generated, current state of the mining plant, geographical location, and other location specific issues. Incorporating waste and water management solutions as a priority within mining operations is critical for addressing increasing regulatory requirements and a starting point for initiating other Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. Collaboration among mining companies, NGOs, local community, and government facilitates successful projects which build trust leading to long term relationships. In this paper we also talk about the benefits of implementing a CSR project that captures the focus of local communities and allows the mining company to focus on operations. Implementing a sustainable business model that incorporates the broader community impacted by projects will continue to benefit even after the mining company ceases operation in that location. The challenges involved with implementing effective CSR projects, which require measuring and reporting effectiveness to create a positive social, economic, and environmental impact is also presented in this paper.

The effects of solutes on the distribution of two-dimensional configurations of grains in zone-refined tin have been studied. When solutes with partition coefficients (ko) greater than unity are added, three-sided pains become more prevalent and the growth law changes. It is shown by electron-Probe micro-analysis that a solute buildup occurs ahead of a moving grain boundary when ko > 1. It has been found recently1, 2 that solutes with partition coefficients greater than unity have a larger retarding effect on grain growth than solutes with k, less than unity. ko is defined as the ratio of the concentration of solute in the solid to the concentration of solute in the liquid with which the solid is in equilibrium. Niessen and winegard2 have suggested that this effect is probably due to the complex shape changes which occur during the process of grain growth and that no theory based on single boundary motion3-5 can explain the results. They suggested that the dissociation of the unstable fourfold junction was delayed in alloys where ko was greater than 1 because the boundaries at the junction had to move into a region of high solute concentration. If indeed this mechanism were correct, it was felt that not only would the dissociation of fourfold junctions be affected by the solute buildup ahead of the boundaries, but the collapse of three-sided grains would be impaired. These combined effects would naturally lead to a modification in the distribution of the number of sides per grain seen on a two-dimensional section. The present investigation was undertaken to test these hypotheses by examining the grain-growth process in detail. EXPERIMENTS The Distribution of Grain Configurations in Zone-Refined Tin as Seen on a Two-Dimensional Section. Following the method of Bolling and Winegard,6 zone-refined tin was cast into button-shaped specimens and, subsequently, plastically deformed under a drop hammer at room temperature. The resulting flat coin-shaped samples were annealed at 200°C, some for 50 sec and others for 100 sec. The specimens were then examined to determine the distribution of the number of sides per grain, i.e., the num- ber of crystals adjacent to any particular grain in the section. For simplicity, the grains were classified as three-sided, four-sided, and so forth; this concept is schematically illustrated in Fig. 1. As indicated by smith,' it was necessary to examine every grain within an enclosed area to obtain a proper distribution of the relative frequency of each type. "The ever increasing demand for cleaner steels with low inclusion content has highlighted the limits of our current knowledge for controlling and predicting inclusion agglomeration and removal during liquid steel processing. Key knowledge gaps in this area result from the complex nature of the problems associated with measuring and visualizing the phenomena studied. Confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM) allows for continuous in situ observation of micron-size samples in real time, at high resolution, under conditions relevant to the steelmaking process. This paper summarizes some of recent CSLM applications in our laboratory to illustrate the methods of analyzing transient behavior. The reaction between inclusions and slag is given as an example. The dissolution rate of calcium aluminate inclusions in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slags has been studied at elevated temperatures: 1500, 1550 and 1600°C as well as thermodynamic/kinetic analysis. It is found that total dissolution time decreased with increasing temperature. The rate limiting steps are discussed. It is shown that the diffusion through a product layer is responsible for dissolution at 1500°C. At higher temperature, dissolution is most likely controlled by both boundary layer diffusion and chemical reaction at the slag-inclusion interface. In this paper, the evidence for and against the theory will be critically examined and repercussions of the theory to steel refining processes will be discussed.INTRODUCTION Inclusion formation during liquid steel refining is an unavoidable consequence of current ladle steelmaking processes. The nature and quantity of the inclusions formed in steel is critical in steelmaking, as it affects both productivity through clogging, and downstream physical properties of the steel. It is therefore crucial to better understand and control the formation, agglomeration and dissolution behaviour of inclusions in a slag in order to improve the removability of inclusions from liquid steel. Most research (Sandhage & Yurek, 1988; Sandhage & Yurek, 1990a; Sandhuge & Yurek, 1990b; Sandhuge, 1991) relevant to the kinetics of inclusion removal has been obtained by using a technique where simulated inclusion material (ceramic rods) is dipped in slag and the dissolution rate is measured. While much has been learned using this approach, the difference in scale from bulk materials to inclusions is likely to have a significant bearing on the dissolution kinetics of inclusions in a slag and will certainly result in a very different influence of capillary effects. Further, the data obtained using an indirect (dip test) procedure relies on a comparison of the initial and final conditions of a sample rather than in-situ observation which can be achieved in a confocal microscope in real time."

A comprehensive understanding of the effects of autoclave configuration (batch, semi-batch, continuous) on the residence time necessary to achieve a target conversion is a prerequisite for design of commercial scale autoclaves. Particle size distribution, mineral and reagent concentrations, temperature and mixing also influence the conversion. This paper outlines the bases of using test data to predict performance of commercial scale autoclaves. Recommendations for coordinating test program design with selection of scale-up method are provided. Examples are given to illustrate the different levels of engineering effort needed to meet corresponding levels of design optimization and accuracy.

The development of the potential supply analytic system has advanced to the point that quantitative estimates of economically recoverable resources can be made as the final step of the traditional regional mineral resource assessment process. In 1983, the BOM and the ADGGS jointly developed a methodology to quantitatively assess the potential for undiscovered yet economically recoverable minerals within a designated geographic area. This methodology was first applied in the assessment of the undiscovered mineral potential of the Kantishna Hills, Alaska (White et al., 1987). At that time the assessment procedure combined a series of technical judgements regarding the major geologic, engineering and economic factors that influenced the occurrence and exploitation of mineral resources in the Kantishna Hills area. Since then the methodology has been further developed and enhanced, particularly with respect to the engineering and economic analysis components. The resulting Potential Supply Analysis System (PSAS) was recently used to evaluate the economic potential of selected types of undiscovered precious-metal deposits in the Tonopah quadrangle of Nevada (Gunther, et al., 1988) and, with some enhancements, has been used to estimate the' economic value of the undiscovered mineral potential of the WMNRA/SNCA study area. The PSAS has been designed to address five basic questions about the mineral potential of an area: 1) What alternative states of geologic nature are possible in the area of interest (e.g. How many and what types of undiscovered deposits could be present and what might be their grade, tonnage and depth attributes?) ?;

Two processes developed to take advantage of the special characteristics of two of these materials are described, and how these materials are used in several new insulation systems now on the market is discussed. Finally, future trends in motor insulation are outlined.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunneling is an ever-increasing prospect for underground construction, and, with each new tunnel bored, there are unknown elements. When boring through the earth, even extensive geotechnical baseline reports can miss fault lines, water inflows, squeezing ground, rock bursting and other types of extreme conditions. This article draws on the consider-able field service experience within Robbins to analyze successful methods of dealing with the most challenging conditions encountered. Many tunnel projects are located in areas with relatively poor access along the tunnel alignment and bored under extremely high overburden. These two factors often result in limited geological information. It would be reason-able to state that the deeper the tunnel, the greater the lev-el of uncertainties. When faced with these uncertainties everyone involved with the project including the owner, the contractor and the machine supplier must be prepared to tackle geological surprises. This article describes the problematic geological conditions and associated difficulties faced on three separate projects and the measures that were taken to overcome these difficulties.

The over-all apparent single-phase permeability of fracture-rock systems was studied using two different two-dimensional models. In a strict sense the results are applicable only to these models, yet may give some insight into real reseruoir behavior. The regular fracture-matrix model can have any number of regular fracture sets. All fractures within each set have the same orientation, width and spacing. The gross behavior is amlytically equivalent to that of an anisotropic permeable medium. In the heterogeneous fracture systems, individual fracture conductivities vary within a two-dinensioml network pattern. A computer program calculates the overall permeability after the conductivities are randomly placed in the network. The calculated permeability depends upon the distribution of these conductivities and the particular fracture pattern into which they are placed. Although detailed information on actual reseruoir fracture systems is not available, this study shows how some of the possible variables may affect obserued gross reservoir characteristics. INTRODUCTION Characteristics of reservoir rocks are determined by direct (core analysis) or indirect (logging and production tests) examination. Both methods, singly and together, are widely used in reservoir evaluations. For fractured reservoirs a problem exists in relating characteristics of cores to the in situ reservoir properties. Knowing fracture characteristics can be of value in determining production mechanisms. Because of the limitations of observation, the intimate details of a fractured rock system will never be known. One approach in analyzing fractures is to study the behavior of some conceptually simple models. The two models analyzed contain features which may be realistic, yet are mathematically tractable. Flow is considered in two dimensions only, with the plane of interest at right angles with the fractures. This concept represents the horizontal flow in a reservoir system with the fractures oriented vertically. Only single-phase, laminar flow is considered. The regular fracture-rock system permeability is calculable from a simple analytical expression. The heterogeneous system requires a computer program for calculating overall permeability.

"Mining towns have always been an important part of Canadian geography. Many Canadians grew up in them. The frontiers of northern Canada would be a lot closer to the United States border but for the pioneering of new mines, new towns, and new transportation routes. Names such as Labrador City, Chibougamau, Val d’Or, Rouyn-Noranda, Kirkland Lake, Timmins, Sudbury, Red Lake, Thompson, Flin Flon, Yellowknife, Whitehorse,Trail and Kimberley are some of the better known larger communities that have grown to become major commercial and government centres, but which started as the base for a mining development.Many other smaller towns never grew beyond being small communities, dependent upon the local mine and many of these are still alive, but perhaps not quite what they used to be. In this list would be Buchans, Schefferville, Chapais, Cadillac, Virginia town, Lynn Lake, Uranium City, Pine Point, and Keno Hill.Nevertheless, all these towns and dozens more like them were residential communities where people lived and raised families and were quite accustomed to being days from the major centres of Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver, and not just hours away as wet end to measure travelling time today."

The material available is so voluminous and leads into so many ramifications, and the memories of the Camp are so vivid and treasured, that it is difficult to decide just what to use. Then, too, the geologists are the story-tellers of our tribe - I am only a hard rock miner.Members of the Cobalt Branch and Cobalters everywhere will agree without question that this Cobalt camp has been the greatest of all influences on Canadian mining. To those who do not know Cobalt, our opinion may seem prejudiced and our statement exaggerated.Be that as it may, discussion on this subject can be profitable, since it is worthwhile now and then to think on 'whence we came' and 'where we are going'.In the revival of interest in the Cobalt camp, we hope our guests may feel some of the old Cobalt Spirit, which has become the Spirit of the North.Visitors may even, while here, catch a glimpse of that whimsical little guardian spirit of the camp - the original goblin, the Kobold - for which Cobalt was named.While Kobold brings that good luck which plays so important a part in mining, he can have his evil moments, as in his original German home. There, when he made the silver disappear from their good ore, they cursed the grey ore, calling it Kobold.Although this little goblin bas frequently upset our best mining plans and geological calculations, be has played the game as well. He placed •some silver on the surface, and when he hid ~t at depth he left dues .for its finding.
