THANKS to the excellent preliminary work of: the Division officers and the local committee the fall meeting of the Coal Division at Bluefields was a brilliant success. West Virginia was at its best with its beautiful mountains, good roads and foliage, just beginning to turn to autumn colors. The meeting began on time and was kept on time throughout. The papers were-well prepared and, being on subjects of live interest, provoked 'lively discussion. One factor in bringing this about was that they were not too numerous and that with one exception copies had been submitted in advance a sufficient time to permit of them having been studied. The Friday morning session was presided over by John .J. Lincoln of the Crozier Coal and Coke Co. and president of the Pocahontas Coal Operators Association. After brief announcements by Thomas H. Clagett, chairman of the local committee, regarding plans for the two day's involved, and by Howard N. Eavenson, chairman of the Division, the reading of papers was taken up.

The Bureau of Mines studied the purification of commercially available vanadium in the 100-kw electron-beam furnace. Purification studies were conducted on a 100-gram button scale by melting and holding the liquid vanadium at temperatures ranging from 2,060° to 2,080° C at pressure of 5(10)-5 torr for periods ranging from 5 to 20 minutes. The effect of doping vanadium with carbon and metallic additions was determined. This study demonstrated that hydrogen was readily removed to 3 ppm or less, oxygen and carbon were reduced to less than 100 ppm each, and the metallic impurities were reduced Co the range of 10 to 500 ppm. The nitrogen content was not reduced in any of the buttons; rather, the nitrogen concentration generally increased as samples were held for successively longer periods. Oxygen was removed much faster and more completely when vanadium was doped with small carbon additions or one of several dopes prior to melting.

The prevalent strategic approach in the mining industry is one of planning. However, it is widely recognised that planning does not work in complex and uncertain situations (Mintzberg, 1994), such as those associated with ‘above ground’ non-technical orebody complexity (Trench, Packey and Sykes, 2014). Mintzberg, Ahlstrand and Lampel (2009) suggest the focus instead should be on strategic ‘thinking and doing’ and using the many ways to think about strategy to make sense of complex, uncertain, and unique situations. They therefore place great value in cognitive flexibility. Scenarios development utilizes several different thinking styles and thus assists with this type of flexible strategic thinking (Figure 1). The ‘Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET) Scenarios’ were developed with the ‘Oxford Scenario Planning Approach’ (OSPA) (Ramírez and Wilkinson, 2016). The OSPA aims more to improve the thinking skills of decision makers, rather than forecasting per se (Wack, 1985a, 1985b). As such, this paper focuses less on the content of the scenarios and instead on the practical value of scenarios in strategizing. COAL companies are definitely becoming conscious of the need for better organization. Mechanized mining and the intricate preparation of coal have brought with them the demand for better trained and more highly skilled mining personnel. Refinement in coal mine management is increasing the demand for young graduate engineers to start in the lower grades of the reorganization and prepare themselves to meet rapidly increasing coal mining responsibilities. The interest is wide in scope and extends from self-helps, extension work, and management study at the mines to stimulation of interest in coal mining amongst undergraduate mining students, leading to their permanent employment after graduation. Data by the United States Bureau of Mines show the total annual value of coal production (bituminous and anthracite in the U.S.) through the past 22 years as being more than 38 per cent of the combined value of all ocher mineral industry products. Natural-gas production has gained rapidly on coal since 1916; petroleum exceeded coal beginning with 1934 (see Figure 1). For this 22-year period, the Committee on Student Interest in Coal Mining, in the A.I.M.E., made a survey of the mining schools in Canada and the United States to show the approximate absorption of young graduate mining engineers by the coal industry. In 1938, 232 mining engineers were graduated as compared with 42 in 1918 (a war year) and 180 in 1923. From 1923 to 1929 the graduates declined to another low of 90, but from there on there was a rapid annual increase in the graduating output, reaching a total of 232 in 1938 and continuing upward to a maximum of over 325 graduating this present month.

This new tool can be used for the proper assessment of the potential economic wealth of any risky capital project. It does provide an unambiguous recommendation of the type "go or no go" to the decision-maker simply by comparing two different ratios profit/investment. One ratio determines the minimum value required to at least break-even while the other measures a probable value based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes (weakest link concept). Its application is briefly illustrated by means of an underground gold mine project, an oil sands mine project and a poly-metallic open pit project.

Idler engineering, operation, and maintenance cannot be covered in depth in a short paper. Therefore, this will be a general look into the subject matter in light or the present-day technology. Depending on the source or reference used, belts for handling bulk material underground came into being between 1900 and 1920, while strip mining appeared in the thirties. The conveyor belt speeds in that era were in the 300 rpm to 500 rpm range. Belt speeds or 600-700 rpm were in vogue in the thirties, and the early sixties saw speeds or 800-900 rpm. Today, speeds or 1000 rpm are not looked at with dismay; in fact, speeds or 2000 rpm are being discussed. Among the driving forces moving the bulk materials handling industry to these greater heights have been the mining operators and engineers. Their appetite to increase output, yield, and reduced per-ton costs has constantly challenged the bulk material handling industry to develop products capable or handling these increased capacities. One or the products affected by this movement is the idler. Apart from the conveyor belt itself, it is one or the most significant parts or a conveyor system because or the sheer numbers needed in an installation.

The concrete work on the new Britannia mill was started in April, 1922. The erection of steel commenced on July 10th, following. The installation of wood work and machinery , began on November 4th of the same year and was pushed to completion in January, 1923. The new mill building is an all steel structure enclosed with galvanized corrugated steel. All main floors and foundations are of reinforced concrete, which makes the building practically fireproof throughout. The mill building rises on a steep hillside to a vertical elevation of 210 feet and has seven distinct floors, for the various opera-tions. Only one elevator, with 30-foot centres, is used in the entire mill. The building is exceptionally roomy and well lighted, both by day and night. The capacity of the mill, as originally designed, was to be 2000 tons daily, but this tonnage can be readily increased to over 3000 tons daily by making slight changes in the fine grinding equipment; in fact, an average of 2700 tons per 24 hours was maintained throughout the month of September.

An advanced water-in-oil emulsion hydraulic fluid has been developed which meets defined laboratory performance criteria and which has given fully satisfactory results in a one-year underground mine test in two continuous miners. A novel method of monitoring fluid water content was demonstrated and incorporated into a test kit for use at or near the mine site. Test fluid fire resistance integrity as measured by the MSHA Schedule 30 procedure was maintained during the test and important fire resistance test variables identified.

Compressive crushing is applied in crushing plants used in mineral, mining, and aggregate in-dustry for fragmentation of rock materials. From a global perspective, the total volume of crushed rock is massive and corresponds to several billion tons. All societies have to fulfil a daily need of rock material products and its derivatives such as metals and minerals. The business for metals and minerals is global while the aggregates production is mainly a local industry. This paper presents a broader overview of optimisation with respect to product yield, use of natural resources and energy consumption. High level plant optimisation of compressive crushing plants is covered as well as real-time optimisation and optimisation of single production units. Each of three optimisation areas are presented and a discussion around how these three areas will be able to communicate with each other is given. Several models, e.g. process performance behav-iour with respect to wear, as well as fitness functions can be common for all three areas. Well-defined and representative fitness functions are of the utmost importance in order to assure that the optimisation results reflect the production targets. It is concluded that great benefits can be achieved by linking together different areas of optimisa-tion. The future for compressing crushing lies, without a doubt, in tailored processes both with re-spect to machines optimised for each customer, plant parameters and operation routines as well as an on-line adjustment, which takes into account current information and control possibilities.

As mobile equipment electrification in underground mining continues to gain popularity, control ofheat and humidity in the workplace is becoming a key driver in sizing of ventilation and mine aircooling systems. For design and sizing of ventilation and cooling systems to be accurate, and for themine mobile equipment fleet to be sized appropriately to meet production goals, vehicle productivitymetrics, heat modelling, and energy balances for electrified fleets need to consider operation througha realistic duty cycle that is reflective of various tasks performed during a shift.The authors conducted a real-world comparison of two 8 cubic yard (14 metric tonne) class Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machines – one diesel and one battery-electric vehicle (BEV) – performingidentical muck-haul-dump operations on consecutive days at an underground nickel/copper hardrock mine in Ontario, Canada.The battery-electric LHD averaged 8.9 per cent faster cycle time than the diesel vehicle (gross,without accounting for charging time), and was able to transport 25 per cent more material per cycledue to a larger bucket capacity. When including the charging time, average net cycle times wereequivalent for the two vehicles over the 200 cycles. The BEV carried more payload over the eighthour period due to the increased capacity per cycle.The testing identified an approximately five-fold reduction in heat output from the BEV in comparisonto the diesel LHD on a basis of heat output per tonne of rated bucket capacity. Heat output from thefast charger was found to be approximately 4 per cent of the charging rate, with negligibletemperature change observed in the main drift. External noise levels in the mine were found to be14 dB lower for the BEV during transit and 11 dB lower during bucket loading. Fuel/energy costs forBEV electricity input were approximately four times lower per operating hour than diesel fuel costbased on typical 2021 electrical and diesel unit rates for a grid-connected mine in Ontario, Canada.

The Yanacocha Project is the first foreign investment in Peruvian mining since Cuajone (1976). Three years after the project began, it has become the largest producer of gold from heap leach operations in the world and the top producer in Latin America. The success of Minera Yanacocha (MYSA) opens a new chapter in Peruvian mining with the exploitation of its widely spread gold deposits and has attracted the interest of foreign investors in Peru's ample mineral resources. Construction began on August 1, 1992 and after twelve months of arduous work, the first gold bar was poured on August 7, 1993 from ore from the Carachugo mine. In 1993, Minera Yanacocha produced 81,000 ounces of gold and 304,000 ounces in 1994 (40% above budget). Production is expected to exceed 500,000 ounces in 1995 with the start-up of operations in the Maqui Maqui mine. This paper presents a summary of MYSA's experiences during its first two years of operations in the areas of mining, ore processing, environmental protection, loss control and community assistance. The paper also shows that MYSA's successes are not only due to the richness of the deposit, but also to the combination of a number of factors basic to the project's success, such as: an economic policy favoring investment in Peru, the availability of highly qualified local personnel to facilitate the transfer of technology from the United States and the desire and determination of the partners to carry the project forward in an initial atmosphere of uncertainty and terrorism.

Problems caused by water discharge from surface mine ventilation shafts can be significant and are usually unforseen. The discharged water is often hyper-saline or acidic and can cause environmental degradation over a wide radius. It can also lead to recurring power pole fires and primary fan breakdowns. A range of solutions to the water discharge problem has been implemented in many Australian mines. In most cases the solutions have been ad hoc, with the overall cost and effectiveness varying tremendously. This paper reviews and contrasts the practicality and effectiveness of the various available remedial options.

"This article makes evident the shortcomings of the current operation of oxygen pipes as well as the damages they cause and why they cause them. When focusing on the causes and effects of these drawbacks, it was possible to develop a new family of thermal lances that could pierce a taphole with the precision of a drill but with the capacity to complete the whole operation. Although efforts have been made to replace oxygen pipes since they are annoying, dangerous and inefficient, nobody had worked to improve the way the traditional oxygen pipe taps/perforates the furnaces and reactors tapholes. In fact, developments made in drills and robotic arms, have failed to replace the oxygen pipe, which despite their negative side effects have been used for more than a century. Observation and theory were key to radically transform this humble tool into a dependable and efficient support in the operation. A good news that it is worthwhile to share for the benefit of all of us, passionate about the world of pyro metallurgy.INTRODUCTION Normally, reports and papers prepared for conventions, symposia or other technical events related to metallurgy aim to relevant topics in the operational field, probably because in them lay the scale economies every company pursues. We intend to give relevance to a matter normally disregarded in operations, but that unmistakably vital: if the furnace or reactor cannot be bled, the pyrometallurgical process will not be completed. Besides, if the tapping task is difficult or is long delayed, the availability of the furnace will be reduced. Consequently, there will be a waste of energy and workers will be exposed to dangerous levels of radiation as well as to work overload and physical injuries Apart from these basic effects, in tapping operations where oxygen pipes are used, we can see serious damages in the smelting furnace, especially in the taphole components such as refractory bricks, taphole jackets and water cooled plates. This paper intends to show that taking care of the tapping task can significantly upgrade not only to the tapping operation itself, but also the whole plant productivity."

"INTRODUCTION ""Free silica"" includes all free forms of silicon dioxide, such as quartz, chalcedony, tridymite, cristbbalite, opal, diatomaceous earth, and lechatelierite. The term, has been used rather loosely however, as synonymous with quartz, as quartz is the most abundant form of free silica. ""Combined silica,"" on the other hand, has been reserved to denote silica combined with other elements as silicates.Improvements in methods for the determination of free silica, and quartz in particular, have been the subject of considerable interest during the past decade, owing mainly to the accented and increased knowledge concerning quartz as a causative factor in silicosis. Analysis for quartz, however, is of importance in many other fields, including the determination of quartz in ceramic raw materials, such as feldspar and clay; the evaluation of a beneficiation procedure by the ore dresser, such as in the concentration of iron ore; control studies of a manufactured product, such as silica brick; and routine analysis of rock, mineral, and ore samples by chemists and petrographers."

This paper presents an economic evaluation of resin ion exchange and solvent extraction for the purification and concentration of uraniferous solutions derived from sulphuric acid leaching operations. Capital and operating costs are related to the uranium tenors of pregnant solutions. The conclusions drawn herein apply only to cases where resin and liquid ion exchange are technically feasible process alternatives. It is shown that solvent extraction is economically favoured for pregnant solutions at tenors greater than 0.90 gpl U3O8. Pregnant solutions with tenors below 0.35 gpl U3O8 are best treated by resin ion exchange. Between these concentrations, the economics are marginal and the favoured process is indistinguishable within the limits of accuracy of this study.

The planning, design and operation of mines must include the development of positive environmental, community and land-use benefits if it is to achieve good corporate social responsibility and minimise detrimental impacts throughout the life of the mine. Life-of-mine (LOM) planning should, therefore, consider conducting mining activities in the best socially, environmentally and economically acceptable manner, from the commencement of exploration to post-closure of the mine. Current knowledge of LOM activities in relation to public health (life-of-community, or LOC) impacts neither fully captures the full suite of human health and well-being impacts, nor comprehensively informs society on these issues. This knowledge gap is becoming more apparent as public antipathy is increasing towards mining activities within Australia, Canada and globally. The purpose of this paper is to present preliminary and informative results of a literature review to gain insight into the extent of available public health and well-being knowledge associated with mining development. LOM development must also benefit the LOC, in that it must aim to minimise detrimental impacts, and maximise beneficial (including health) impacts on all associated communities. Health planning and programing for mitigation of potential adverse health impacts of mining should extend beyond the scope of work-related injury and illness (resulting from chronic exposure to harmful substances, infectious and lifestyle illnesses), to the health and well-being of workersÆ families and extended associated communities. A review of technical literature covering Canadian mining emphasizes the advancement and changes that have been made in mining practice. However, current technical publications rarely outline basic principles or state definite rules that govern profitable mine operation. it may be argued that the broad principles of mining have long a go been outlined in various handbooks, text-books, and periodicals, and that these principles never alter. This is in great part true, but modern machinery, improved meta1-lurgical practice, and other advances, have in part modified these principles or changed the manner of their application. Many engineers hesitate to state specific rules, because it is so easy to quote an exception to a rules that any such statement appears to lose weight upon its very utterance. The exception to rules, and the reluctance to formulate rules, has forced such maxims as "the only rule in mining is the point of a pick," and "gold is where you find it". As an illustration of rules and their exceptions, one might quote the time-honoured maxim that a mill should not be built before a shaft has been sunk on a property in point of fact, Canadian mining history is replete with examples of wasted capital where a mill was built before a shaft had been bottomed. Y et this past year has seen a property enter profitable production whereon the building of the mill was started before the shaft was sunk. Instances such as this should not be accepted as evidence that a rule has been overthrown, but rather as an exception to the rule. The case cited pays tribute to the application of the diamond-drill combined with the correlation of sound geology. Incidentally, both these features emphasize a modern trend in the development of Canadian mining properties-a trend that is perhaps worthy of further comment. It is such trends that affect the principles of mining or modify their application. It is with such that this paper deals, at ]east in part. It is hoped that the statement of principles and the opinions herein outlined will be of sufficient interest to arouse discussion.

"The start-up of new plants, extending from the commissioning of equipment to the production ramp-up, is a critical period where the processing circuit operation must be done in a structured and well controlled way to enable the gradual, safe and rapid achievement of production targets. The magnitude of the many risks associated with this pivotal period is accentuated in the actual context of low commodity prices. However, the implementation of a method that analyzes risks associated with a start-up, their probability of occurrence and their impacts leads to the identification of a series of preventive actions that can be applied in order to reduce potential negative impacts.Soutex has been involved in numerous start-ups over the last few years and has developed a structured methodology to assess this crucial period, maximize the pre-start-up preparation, ensure a smoother and safer ramp-up period and minimize the time needed before reaching commercial production.This paper describes a method to identify preventive actions to apply in order to reduce risks related to a plant start-up. Then, the various steps of the method are demonstrated using the industrial case study of the Canadian Malartic gold plant situated in Abitibi, Québec. The specific preventive actions, during start-up, the organisational measures and the ramp-up plan are detailed as they were effectively achieved. Finally, the post start-up actions are presented as well as some key results illustrating the achievement of their prior defined objectives.IntroductionPlanning a new plant or new circuit start-up in a mine installation involves various risks, both at the economical and safety levels. Unprepared staff and equipment can lead to safety issues that could threaten plant staff as well as the environment. Moreover, a poorly prepared start-up could often lead to equipment break-down, production stoppages and delays, leading to important economic impacts, delaying commercial production and therefore affecting directly the profitability of mining projects.It is common in the industry to have structured commissioning procedures for major equipment taken separately. Technical personnel from the equipment manufacturing company would usually come on site in order to perform the pre-operation verification, dry runs and the first hours of operations. This kind of assistance is usually focussed on one piece of equipment and neglects the interactions between the various equipment of the production chain. The commissioning phase is usually maintenance oriented and the information given by the manufacturing representative seldomly flows through the operation staff (in the case of this paper, the denomination “staff” refers to both managing and operating employees). The global process is usually not taken into consideration by the technical personnel sent on-site by the manufacturer during the commissioning phase. Many papers can be found describing the commissioning of new equipment focussing on the technology (Côté and Adante (2009), Wells et al (2007)) but without dealing with its integration process in the complete production chain."

At its College Park Metallurgy Research Center in Maryland, the Bureau of Mines has installed and is operating a 5-ton-per-hour pilot plant for continuous mechanical separation of values contained in raw urban refuse. The entire sys tern was assembled using commercially available equipment. The process relies on multistage processing including shredding, air classification, screening, gravity concentration, and electrostatic separation. Compactor trucks deliver raw refuse collected along typical routes in metropolitan Washington, D.C., to the pilot plant. The loads are separated into concentrates of (1) light-gage iron, (2) massive metals, (3) glass, (4) putrescibles and waste combustibles, (5) paper, and (6) plastics. While some refinements remain to be made in the processing system flow-sheet, the data obtained to date have been highly encouraging, indicating favorable economics for commercial-size plants.
