An essential component to the management of any process is the measurement of key parameters, used to monitor, control, and provide the feedback necessary for improvement. This paper discusses how data collection and analysis can provide a better understanding of the blasting process, as well as additional control and improved outcomes.The drill and blast process involves the generation and use of information at a number of levels. Comparison of historical parameters and results provides a starting point for the development of ongoing blast designs and a baseline against which future results can be compared. The collection of data during implementation provides a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) function where potential defects (such as under-drilled or over-charged holes) can be rectified prior to firing. Actual quantities and production rates allow the development of realistic plans and schedules, rather than using inaccurate estimates and targets that lead to unscheduled changes to equipment paths. Over?the past several years there have been a number of technological advances in data collection technology. Drill monitoring instrumentation on blasthole drills provides location information and feedback on rock properties as drilling occurs. Hand held ‘data logger’ technology has also overcome the challenges of working on the bench, such that blasthole measurements can be collected and forwarded directly to the explosive truck. Mine sites are becoming wireless network-enabled allowing the seamless data transfer from the field back to the office, in near real time, as that information is collected. Great strides have also been made in the development of drill and blast software systems which are more user friendly, and yet provide far greater capability to manage the quantity of data generated. The blasting process is critical to the overall mining process and the delivery of a successful blast outcome requires that the blasting process be ‘in control’. The measurement of key parameters can provide the data with which to measure and maintain control of blasting, and allows the validation of performance improvement measures and identification of improvement opportunities.

Open access to forecasts of mine geotechnical performance in the form of open databases of model results has been considered risky in the past, with a concern that the results will not be understood or will be misused. However, some modelling techniques allow very high similitude modelling of mine deformation and the results can be presented as deformation, damage and other parameters which are unambiguous and which all engineers can be more easily trained to understand. With some effort, sufficient reliability and quantifications of error are possible to overcome many of the issues.Allowing more members of the planning team to have direct access to forecasts of mine deformation will promote awareness of geotechnical issues and will act as a mechanism for improving mine designs. The models will also be more easily integrated into quality assurance programs, by providing a framework for understanding measurement results.The sufficiency requirements for undertaking simulation aided mining engineering will be presented, included some conclusions about requirements for training, quality standards and software development.

Recovery via gravity is one of the oldest mineral processing methods available. Unfortunately, the use of gravity techniques for gold recovery has been in decline for the past century as more effective chemical processes such as flotation and leach/CIP have been developed. Recently, with the push towards more sustainable environmental outcomes, the benefits of gravity separation have become more apparent. While gravity as a unit process is not usually capable of achieving as high a recovery as flotation or whole ore cyanidation, a combination of gravity devices alone or in conjunction with these processes can offer significant advantages to the operator. This paper reviews the range of gravity devices available, their application and the results that can be achieved by maximizing gravity through the use of a combination of gravity recovery devices. Three case studies are provided.

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1932 was 24, a decrease of 6, or 20 percent from the number killed in 1931. The decrease in the number of fatalities occurring in 1932 caused the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry to reach its lowest point in 10 years. Changing conditions in the oil industry - reduced personnel, decreased active field development, and curtailed production - have undoubtedly caused a part of this decrease, but continued accident-prevention efforts by the industry have also contributed to the reduction in the number of fatalities for 1932. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed and reported annually the fatalities in the California petroleum industry for a period of 10 years. Figure 1 shows the trend of fatal accidents during that period. Fatality statistics for 1932 show that the drilling and producing, pipe line and transportation, and refining and natural gasoline divisions of the industry had fewer accidents in 1932 than in 1931, sales and marketing being the only division that showed an increase over 1931. The number of fatalities by divisions for 1931 and 1932, percent of total, and percentages of increase and decrease are given in Table 1.

The base metal ore from the hanging wall of White's orebody at Rum Jungle, N.T., is composed of copper and oth.er sulphides in a rock described as a phyllite,.which consists essentially of micaceous minerals with a little graphite.Fast selective flotation was obtained in acid circuit below pH 3·5. In neutral or alkaline circuit flotation was generally slow and selectivity very poor due to the ready flotation of part of the sericite. However, it was found that fast selective flotation could be obtained in neutral or alkaline circuit by either of two treatment methods following pre-conditioning in acid circuit; firstly by decanting or filtering a substantial part of the circuit liquor, and secondly by neutralizing with soda ash or lime, providing the collector was added before neutralizing. Otherwise pre-conditioning with acid brought about no improvement whatever.To explain this behaviour, three possible reasons for the flotation of part of the sericite are examined. There is evidence that some sericite floats because of thin films of either sulphides or graphite, but it seems likely such particles will float under all the conditions investigated.On the other hand, if it is assumed that part of the sericite floats because it is activated by metallic ions derived from the circuit water, a reasonable explanation can be given for the variations in flotation behaviour.INTRODUCTIONWhite's uranium orebody at Rum Jungle, N.T., sixty miles south of Darwin, is mined and treated by Territory Enterprises Pty. Ltd. (a subsidiary of Consolidated Zinc Pty. Ltd.), who are managers of the Rum Jungle project on behalf of the Australian Commonwealth Government.This ore contains a significant quantity of copper sulphides, and a flotation plant recovers a copper concentrate from the tailing remaining after the uranium has been extracted.In contact with the hanging wall of the uranium-copper orebody, a further mass of non-uraniferous sulphide ore occurs, and the present paper relates to the behaviour in flotation of this base metal ore.

The explosion occurred at about 3:05 p.m. in the largest of the 11 school buildings on the campus. THE property of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited, consists of eleven claims located on McKenzie island in Red lake. The mine is about 4,Y:l miles by water from the Howey townsite on the same lake, and about 95 miles north of Kenora, Ont. (see Figure 4). Mail and express are flown-in daily, winter and summer, from Sioux Lookout, Hudson, Kenora, and Winnipeg. All heavy supplies are freighted-in during the summer over a water route, using four marine railway portages, from Hudson, Ont., a distance of about 180 miles. During the winter, freighting over the same route is clone by tractor if necessary, but costs are three to four rimes the summer rate. Due to these conditions, large inventories of supplies must be kept on hand, varying from a spring minimum of $45,000 to a peak of $110,000 early in November. The average cost of all freight brought in from steel during 1937 was $0.01 per pound.

Calcium silicate slag (Di-Cal) and magnesium oxide condensate (MgO) are the by-products of magnesium smelting operations, As these oxides have acid neutralizing and metal precipitating properties, it was decided to examine their reactions with (a) individual heavy metals and (b) with a mixture of metals in solution, The resulting solid reaction products were further tested with respect to the stability of the contained metals, The stability of the solid precipitates were examined as a function of the method of precipitation and as function of the solution pH With respect to the method of precipitation, the performance of Di-Cal and MgO was compared to the performance of lime, an industry standard for heavy metal precipitation, Four different pH solutions (4,0, 5,0, 7,0 and 1 LO) were used to study the effect of pH on the stability of the precipitates. It was found that Di-Cal, in most cases, produced the most stable precipitates and thus, outperformed lime, Metal precipitates prepared by the addition of MgO were the most soluble for each metal studied, except for Se,

The number of completed petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline in 1938, but the total capacity to process crude oil increased materially. This information was obtained in connection with the Bureau's annual canvass of refinery capacity as of January 1, 1939. In spite of the addition of a half dozen plants in Illinois and the inclusion in this year's list of several more "pot-stills" in Montana, the total number of plants, and inactive, declined from 551 on January 1, 1938, to 538 on January 1, 1939. was entirely in shut-down plants, as the number of operating plants rose from both active The decline 431 to 435. Yost of the plants dismantled were situated in Wyoming and Texas, parts or several from the latter being transported to Illinois. About 10 more East Texas refineries were dismantled in 1938, leaving about 15 plants in the field, only 8 of which were operating on January 1, 1939. Although the total completed capacity increased from 4,351,151 barrels on January l, 1938, to 4,508,555 barrels on January l, 1939, the operating capacity declined, and the inactive capacity increased about 50 percent, or from 380,955 to 574,770 barrels. These shifts in capacities reflect the comparative slump in the refining industry in 1938 after the prosperous year 1937. Daily average crude runs in 1938 were 3,192,000 barrels, from which it may be figured that the operating ratio for the active units was about 81 percent of crude and for all completed equipment 74 percent. The highest daily throughput in 1938 was about 3,400,000 barrels, at which time the reserve capacity represented in the active equipment was at least 500,000 barrels, in addition to about that much capacity shutdown. In an emergency, much more reliance could be placed on the reserve capacity of the active equipment, as much of the shut-down capacity is obsolete at present specifications and prices. Regarding obsolescence, the refiners reported 418,165 barrels of their idle capacity in good condition on January l, 1939 and 156,605 barrels in poor condition. However, it is probable that the former reflects an optimistic viewpoint. Refinery activity, as represented by new construction and dismantling, declined materially in 1938. The new capacity added in 1938 was 378,350 barrels compared with 394,680 barrels in 1937. Probably 1939 will see a much larger decline, as the new capacity under construction on January 1, 1939, totaled only 142,250 barrels compared with 283,020 barrels the preceding year. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies show that 43.5% of surveyed coal preparation plant workers had noise exposures exceeding the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure level of 90 dB(A). Sound levels around vibrating screens in these plants often exceed 90 dB(A). NIOSH is currently developing noise controls for horizontal vibrating screens. To characterize noise sources, NIOSH researchers performed sound pressure level (SPL) measurements on a vibrating screen at their Office of Mine Safety and Health Research laboratory in Pittsburgh. The results show that the entire screen contributes to noise below 1 kHz, and the vibration mechanism housings are most significant above 1 kHz. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments and an enclosure were used to reduce mechanism housing noise in this range from 1-10 kHz. These were evaluated using sound power level measurements according to ISO 3744. The CLD treatments reduced the A-weighted sound power level by 3.1 dB in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands. A panel-on-frame vibration mechanism enclosure using various types of panels further reduced the A-weighted sound power level from the CLD configuration in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands by 3.7, 4.0, and 3.9 dB for aluminum, steel, and Dynalam™ panels, respectively. The combination yielded a 7 dB reduction from baseline in A-weighted sound power for the same frequency range.

Newmont's research, operations, history and experience with pre-treatment of preg-robbing carbonaceous ores are described, with emphasis on the chemistry, physics and kinetics of chlorine treatment. Present operations, control strategy and projected changes are also described, including a summary of the adsorption of chlorine into pulps and off-gas scrubbing. Conditions of chlorination have been optimized by the use of Eh-pH diagrams of the gold-chlorine-water system, and have resulted in significant increases in gold recoveries and decreases in chlorine consumptions.

Tunnel project contract documents often present groundwater infiltration requirements for components of the underground portions of the project. All too often these documents require quantifiable target inflows for these components, but only refer to them in subjective terms such as “dry,” “manageable,” etc. The Contractor’s definition of these terms will inevitably differ from the Engineer’s definition of these terms. The purpose of this paper is to look at common subjective terms used in documents and provide suggestions for reasonable quantifiable language. Additionally, the paper will provide information and recommendations on relative levels of cost and effort increase needed to provide increasing levels of water cutoff (i.e., achieve “dryness”?).

THE Tuesday afternoon session", H. A. Bedworth chairman and T. S. Fuller, vice-chairman, was opened with D. J. McAdam, Jr.'s paper entitled "The Influence of Cyclic Stress on Corrosion." This paper dealt with the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion of alloy steels, corrosion-resisting steels, monel metal and aluminum alloys. The paper was discussed by T. S. Fuller, who pointed out that steels under stress corroded more than unstressed steels when subjected to steam.

YOU have been kind enough to ask me to speak to you on "The War and Anglo-American Relations." A speaker always takes the liberty of putting his own interpretation on the scope of his subject. I am going to exercise that privilege, and try to look back over a generation of Anglo-American relationships and forward beyond the present war. I should like particularly to consider responsibilities as well as relationships. A more accurate caption for what I am going to say would be "Anglo-American Responsibilities.?? THE WAR WILL BE WON I am assuming that sooner or later we shall win this war. History and economics point to the same conclusion, that Germany has attempted the impossible and that the seeds of defeat are already sown. As to one ecof1:omic factor, I am already on public record as believing that Germany's oil supply is inadequate for the war she has launched. That opinion is unchanged. Aside from such tangible factors, moreover, I am convinced that the spirit of freedom is unquenchable, and that no combination of powers will be able to rout it from the British Commonwealth of Nations and the United States. Stronger even than this conviction is my faith in a God who will not suffer the defeat of man's aspiration to be master of his own soul. I am sure that all of you share that faith, and that we need not argue it. We can start with the assumption that the war will end in victory. The subject we are to consider, then, is the relationship of the English-thinking peoples during the conflict, and their joint responsibilities in the difficult days that will follow it. A CANADIAN-AMERICAN No talk on such a subject is worth listening to unless the audience knows the background and fundamental beliefs of the speaker. No human statement stands alone; behind and beside and within it are the ideals and the bias of the man who makes it. Because I am a stranger to most of you, I am constrained to talk about myself before I talk about more important matters. The review may be profitable, not because of the subject, but because it may illustrate the evolution of an attitude toward England.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 547 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 340 samples were collected during calendar year 1967. The remaining 207 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting, permission to publish the results were not received until 1967. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. The Bureau of Mines has conducted this survey in the United States since 1917, and in 1965 it was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 516.4 Nine previous publications have been made to present results of 7,618 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1967. A major thrust in Industrial automation over the past few years has been the exploration and incorporation of higher level (supervisory and optimizing) control strategies aimed at more fully exploiting the existing control system infrastructure. There is little doubt that this is worthwhile pursuit, however, one must not lose sight of the maintenance and development requirements of the basic control system. Statistics on loop performance indicate that this too is an area of considerable potential. In this paper the authors look at some of the less elegant, but arguably equally important issues in mineral processing plant control. The focus is on controller structures, loop tuning, sampling, filtering, and some of the other principal components of the regulatory control foundations. In many cases significant improvements In control performance can be achieved by getting back to the basics.

Crandallite and millisite in Christmas Island 'B' and 'C' phosphate ores are rapidly decomposed by sodium hydroxide solutions at about 80QC. As these phosphates generally contain less than 1% silica, an alkaline extraction process can be designed, in which up to 95% of the sodium hydroxide used, may be recycled. The insoluble residue consists of an impure, highly reactive apatite, which in pot trials, has given good responses as a direct application fertiliser; alternatively this residue can be underacidulated to give a granular product with fertiliser potential. The hot leaching solution contains up to 95% of the alumina and approx- imately half of the phosphate from the original ore. Simple crystallising techniques have been developed on a laboratory-scale to use this leaching solution for producing smelter-grade alumina and detergent-quality trisodium phosphate. As the demand for detergents is limited, an investigation was made of the reaction between trisodium phosphate and slaked lime, derived from a high-grade New Zealand limestone occurring near Oamaru. The product is calcium phosphate, containing up to 40% P205, and less than 0.2% each of iron, aluminium and fluorine, and it should be a useful raw material for phosphoric acid manufacture. A preliminary economic evaluation of the whole process looks promising, And warrants further investigations, including pilot-plant work.

Mining engineers are ready to take a big step into a new field-oil mining. To understand the subject, one must look at the world's oil supply and demand as well as petroleum technology successes and failures. The US has an abundance of solid hydrocarbon and uranium energy resources, but 75% of its energy for industry, transportation, manufacturing, and space heating comes from liquid petroleum and natural gas. So there are increasing efforts to discover new oil reserves; today the number of drilling rigs operating in the US is at an all-time high. But with 80% of the world's wells already located in the US and Canada, good new exploration prospects are difficult to find. The cost of drilling deep new wells has also greatly increased. The US faced a similar situation in the early 1950s, when primary oil production declines began. During that time, the petroleum researcher introduced secondary recovery techniques such as water flooding and gas injection. This increased the average amount of extractable oil from discovered US reservoirs from 17% to 33%. Production soared and the world petroleum price remained stable until the end of the 1960s. Secondary recovery techniques were then supplemented by tertiary oil recovery technologies-increasing sweep efficiency with such things as CO2 injection-that are, so far, only partially successful in most petroleum fields. Even so, these technologies could raise cumulative recovery expectations to 35-38%. The "lost" oil in depleted US reservoirs equals 48 km3 (300 billion bbl) of conventional oil, or 12 times the current recoverable reserve base. At the present rate of US consumption-1 km3/a or 6 billion bbl/a-this is enough to run the US for 50 years without importing any oil. Moreover, there are 16-24 km3 (100-150 billion bbl) of as-yet unrecoverable heavy oil and tar sands in the US.
