In his report on the Coal Resources of Southern Vancouver Island, Mr. J. D. MacKenzie stated that: "For various reasons it has been imagined that the coal deposits of Vancouver Island are extremely large and readily available." "Unfortunately," he added, "neither of these assumptions is correct." The chief disability under which the Island mines now labor does not concern the extent of the deposits. There is ample coal for the present demand. It does, however, concern the availability of the coal. If it were readily available the fuel-oil competition would not be serious and there would be no competition with Alberta, American, Welsh, or Australian coal along the Pacific Coast, for Vancouver Island coal could be produced at a price that would cut out all competition. The outstanding operating difficulty common to all Island mines is the extreme irregularity of the coal seams. To most people a coal seam is synonymous with uniformity, and in most coal seams a condition found at one point will be repeated at other points in the same seam throughout the basin. The accompanying drawings show how very far this is from being true in the Cassidy mine, which, in many respects, is typical of Vancouver Island mines. Figure I is a plan covering about 160 acres of the Douglas seam, the only workable seam in this part of the district. The area shown represents what has been the best producing part of the mine and indicates the very large percentage of the seam where the coal is either entirely lacking or so small in amount that it cannot be profitably recovered.

The process of innovation is triggered by employees throughout the organisation in a collaborative manner.Problem solving becomes a core competence of the consultancy. A multidisciplined approach arrives at superior solutions that are rigorous, holistic, achievable and often novel. It allows the mining consultancy to extract the most from a very talented and experienced team.This paper highlights the advantages of an organic structure for a mining consultancy and how to implement such a structure. The marketability of a large volume bulk material is significantly effected by transportation costs. Hence, it is essential for anyone that deals with minerals or mineral wastes to be able to reliably estimate bulk transport costs. The three types of bulk overland transportation modes that will be discussed are truck, railroad, and pipeline. Contract and private carriage are the two types of truck transport generally suitable for movement of bulk commodities. Contract carriers are those transportation firms that service a limited number of shippers and geographic points, and carry a restricted number of commodities. Private carriage consists of control over drivers and equipment by the shipper, ownership or lease of the transport equipment, and shipment of commodities related to the primary business of the shipper.1 A combination of private and contract carriage may also be used. Depending on the size and regularity of the shipment, rail offers single car, multiple car, or unit train service to move bulk minerals. Both long and short distance pipeline transportation has been shown economically and technically feasible for many different solids such as, mine and quarry products, coal, chemicals, copper concentrates, phosphate rock, and sewage sludge. 2

FROM 1921 to 1939, the aeroplane played an increasingly important role in Canadian prospecting and mine development. This service has been interrupted by the war, but undoubtedly it will be accelerated in the postwar years, if suitable aircraft are available. The purpose of this paper will be to review the uses to which the aeroplane has been put in prospecting and development in the past, and its future possibilities as an aid in prospecting. If by review, and deduction, we get a clear picture of what we expect the prospecting plane to do, we may be able to arrive at a very close approximation of its required characteristics and, from this, an idea of costs. 'Function' is defined as the mode of action by which it (the aeroplane) fulfills its purpose. We will endeavour, therefore, first to find what this purpose is, or should be, so that our expectations will not be too limited nor too great-and then find, by analysis, what performance we require in an aeroplane to meet our reasonable expectations at an economic price.

Regulation of mineral property valuation methodology by governments and others is due to frauds, condemnation and takings, banking industry problems, and litigation. Definitions of "reserves," "resources," and "qualified person" continue to evolve, along with guidelines to the data and disclosure required to support valuations. A less recognized but vital issue relates to the regulatory acceptability of alternatives to the comparable sales method. Comparable sales generally work well for surface real estate, and sometimes for precious metal deposits, but not at all for most industrial mineral properties. Alternative methods, such as net present value, or a geoscience rating system, often provide better valuations. Yet US regulations dictate comparable sales as the preferred method. The task of convincing regulators of the inapplicability of comparable sales to mineral properties, particularly those lacking reserves, may be as important as the valuation itself.

The investigation of mine shafts and underground workings at Leadville, Colo., was started in May 1946 and recessed in November 3, 1946. Thirty-eight shafts and connecting accessible underground workings, comprising about a third of the accessible shafts in the district, were investigated. The Leadville district, a former important producer of lead and zinc, was considered by the Bureau of Mines to be capable of bolstering 'the waning domestic output of .these important metal. Accordingly, the investigation was initiated for the purpose of. .obtaining more definite data on sulfide and oxide reserves, evidence to justify completion of the Leadville drainage tunnel, representative large samples of the complex oxidized and mixed ores for testing to determine methods, beneficiation factual data to be supplied to property owners in order to stimulate production, and to determine the more favorable areas for development by the Bureau.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. H. Jacobs. J. W. Hunter, W. H. Yarroll, P. E. Churchward, R. G. Knickerbocker, R. W. Lewis, H.A. Heller, and J. H. Linck. The workcarried out under the direction of R. S. "The Jaguar project is relatively unique in that it was evaluated, financed, built and operated to completion within the last ten years, providing the opportunity to holistically review and reconcile expectations against the actual outcomes. It is a case study that allows wider conclusions to be drawn with respect to the risks and opportunities involved with project evaluation and execution.Jaguar is located in the Leonora Mining District of Western Australia and was commissioned in mid-2007 as an underground accessed, single high-grade volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit with an on-site concentrator, producing copper and zinc concentrates exported via the Port of Geraldton to South-East Asian markets.The feasibility study (FS) had several iterations (JML, 2005a); the last dated July 2005 was specifically targeted to secure project funding, and summarised the reserves-only portion of the resource and its planned exploitation. The commissioning of the mine was the transition for the owner Jabiru Metals NL from junior explorer to producer and the project was the dominant asset of the company.Jaguar operated through several significant deviations from the linear project plan set out in the FS, including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), a corporate takeover and disruption to the mine plan from the onset of material geotechnical issues. Whilst the GFC or mining disruption were not specifically predicted in the FS or peer reviews, the generic effects of the events were assessed in the project risk assessment and they influenced subsequent management decisions. In parallel to the internal project-specific risks, the short planned life of Jaguar was a risk to the continuation of the corporate entity which was being addressed by significant investment into brownfields exploration to extend or replicate the project, and ultimately added value such that attracted a corporate takeover.Holistically, the project delivered the returns predicted in the FS, but in a much different guise than was expected. This paper will describe the reality of operations compared with the study predictions and expectations through the perspective of the project and corporate risk assessment.CITATION:Jacobs, R, 2016. In order to gain competitiveness and compete at a global level, construction companies should improve their efficiency. The problem is even more relevant in the construction field, whose work processes find it hard to evolve towards new automated methods and techniques in the management field. For that reason, this paper suggests how construction companies could apply new technologies to implement automated management of environmental hazards. Based on a survey regarding the environmental risks presently experienced in construction sites, noise and dust were considered two of the main hazards. So in this paper a networked system for real time remote monitoring of the spatial distribution of dust in construction sites was developed. Such a system would relieve builders from the commitment of on-site surveys, allowing for a continuous monitoring of the site conditions and of the real exposure of each worker and pass-by to the pollutants generated by construction works. The main system requirements considered are: easy to deploy, reliable, as accurate as needed to be able to send real-time warnings and store a good estimation of the real exposure to which involved people have been subject to. So far the research produced a prototypical hardware for dust monitoring made up of wireless sensors which can be easily deployed on site. The sensors were calibrated by means of laboratory tests, where their measurements were compared with those collected by means of highly accurate instruments, which were taken as a reference. Thanks to these experiments, calibration curves for the sensors were worked out, showing also the measurement range of the sensors.

Large quantities of ferromanganese sludge are generated as waste material by blast furnace during the manufacturing of ferromanganese. These slags are very rich in manganese, zinc and lead (5 to 40 %). These residues have been deposited in a pond in periphery of the steel industry. Considering the market value of the metals, these brownfield sites can now be considered as secondary resources. We have developed a hydrometallurgical process for selectively leaching Zn, Mn and Pb in order to produce compounds of Mn and Zn pure enough to be economically recoverable and a residue rich in Pb. Batch laboratory experiments were carried out to determine appropriate leaching conditions to maximize zinc extraction (100 %) and manganese extraction (90.0 %) with sulfuric acid and to generate a residue containing 15 to 30% of lead. This Pb residue is recyclable by another process.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to provide mining industry personnel and regulatory authorities with a subsidence-reference list and annotated bibliography that will aid them in locating subsidence information and in developing their own subsidence information sources. Over 700 references are listed in the Bureau's subsidence information center bibliography; approximately 600 of these references were obtained for assessment. Of these 600 references, 167 were selected to be rated, categorized, and annotated. All literature referenced in this report was published prior to 1984. Table 1 is a cross - referenced index that classifies and rates selected references with respect to specific keywords. References are rated not on quality of content but rather on applicability to given subject areas. Appendix A is an annotated bibliography of the references listed in table 1 and provides further information of each article to aid the user in selecting articles for specific areas of subsidence technology. Appendix B is a copy of the subsidence information center bibliography.

The increasing use of hydrogen fluoride (annual consumption now exceeds 500,000 pounds (1)4/) directly and its occurrence as a byproduct of the utilization of fluorine compounds in the mineral industries, especially in metallurgical processes and in the refining of petroleum products, has aroused interest in its toxicity, and a brief review of the literature, with special reference to the hazard of poisoning in the mineral industries, seems to be opportune. Recently, residents in the vicinity of aluminum plants have been complaining of injury to livestock and vegetation as well as to their own health from the gases discharged into the air during operation of the plants, hydrofluoric acid gas apparently being the offender. The comparatively recent utilization of hydrofluoric acid in the alkylation process for the production of high-octane gasoline has raised the question of the hazard of poisoning in the petroleum Industry. In addition, the use of fluorine-containing refrigerants has extended the potential al exposure outside of industry (2).

"In underground mining, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Foresight Energy, J. H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture a new roof bolting machine with six independent drilling apparatus on board capable of drilling and bolting the roof and ribs with material handling. This is the first Fletcher® six-head machine to be designed and built for the mines in the United States. The machine is intended to work in the Illinois Coal Basin.The objective was to produce a machine capable of drilling and installing six bolts simultaneously with a limited number of operators. The goal of the mine is to decrease the time to bolt a cut to improve the safety level of the current roof bolting method, improve efficiency and to improve the bottom line cost of entry development. The customer wanted four mast feed drills at the front of the machine dedicated to installing roof bolts and then another two mast feed drills behind them dedicated to rib bolts. This dictated the requirement of latched controls, which would allow the operator to start drilling one hole and then latch the controls to be able to move on to the next. To accomplish this, we developed a unique hydraulic latch circuit to maintain operator safety and compliance. Guarding was added to prevent an operator from coming into accidental contact with a latched drill.The result of the design is a machine with a single platform and six independent masts with drillheads: four masts strictly for drilling and installing roof bolts on the front of the platform and two masts on the back of the platform for rib bolts. The feed and rotation controls at each operator's station include a latch control for drilling. The latch control will allow the operator to lock in the feed and rotation once the hole has been collared, allowing the operator to move on to the next hole. The rear of the machine is equipped with material handling. There are two material pods with winch controls as well as a mesh rack that includes mesh lift, mesh tilt, and mesh sump.The six-head roof bolter allows fewer operators to drill and install roof and rib bolts, which in tum lowers the miners' roof exposure per cut. This design reduces the operator's exposure from the inherent pinch points and rotary hazards once he has engaged the latch drilling. Therefore, the machine will help to decrease the time to bolt a cut, improving productivity while enhancing the ability to operate the machine safely."

The Bureau of Mines at Morgantown, W. Va., has been investigating, on a pilot plant scale, various methods of gasifying bituminous coal with oxygen and superheated steam to produce synthesis gas, as part of the broader program of finding new uses for coal. Differences in the pressure gasification methods used have depended on differences in the manner in which the pulverized coal is fed to the gasifier. One of the methods of feeding the coal that was investigated was the continuous, integrated coal-water slurry system. Goal and water were first mixed to produce a slurry; then the slurry was pumped through a heated coil. to evaporate the water fraction; the resulting steam was superheated, and some of it was separated so as to adjust the ratio of the residual steam to the coal fraction and make the resulting mixture suitable for partial combustion with oxygen in a pressure gasifier. Both before and during this reported3 developmental work it was necessary to make an extensive literature search into the technology of aqueous slurries in order to establish design criteria for the pilot plant and to correlate results of various phases of the work with that of other investigators, The pilot work coincided with the commercial development of a long-distance pipeline for the transportation of coal as a coal-water slurry, and this fact tended to broaden the scope of the pilot plant work and the extent of the literature search. This bibliography is the compilation of the material that was collected.

It is situated at College, near Fairbanks, Alaska, approximately on the 65th parallel of latitude, and therefore just south of the Arctic Circle. It is farther north than Hudson Bay, and in about the same latitude as southern Greenland.

Lord (Geological Survey of Western Australia): During the last few days in Kalgoorlie here we have heard on various occasions of the great job the mining engineers have done persisting against rising costs and increasing salaries without a rise in the price of gold. I think it has been somewhat overlooked that it has been difficult to find additional ore as well. I consider that geologists also should be commended on their action in persisting to search for more orebodies. This goes on in any mining community, but in Kalgoorlie in particular, I believe, over the last few years that it has been more difficult all the time to find additional orebodies and the Companies are calling for higher grades to offset the economic condition. I feel that this paper by Mr. Finucane shows that the geologists have persevered on an idea and discovered that they can find additional orebodies in the calc schist where previously it was thought that these did not occur. This has added many tons to the ore reserves, and although it is not very significant at the moment, the significance will probably improve as more work is done.The whole thing has shown us the importance of economic geology. Mr Finucane has had many years of experience here and he has given us a very able exposition of the economics of ore finding, and there are not many questions that one could pose to him, because most of the information he presented is obviously fact borne out by drilling, underground development and lining up the ore channels. He did briefly touch on ore shoots-the Oroya shoot and several others. It would be very good if we could, and I feel sure...

Over the past several decades, cement-based grouts using ultrafine cement as are placement for portland cement have begun to gain acceptance as an alternative to chemical solution grouts, however the amount of information currently available on these grouts is limited. For this reason, the authors developed a field testing program to evaluate the penetration capabilities of various ultrafine cement grout mixes. The tests were conducted by injecting sand columns using different portland and ultrafine based grouts, the measuring penetration distances after applying equal injection pressure for the same time period. Results of tests performed in 1999 and 2000 are discussed herein.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Inca process for continuous cyanide removal from industrial wastewaters was patented in 1984 by G.J. Borbely, et.al. (1). The process requires SO2, air, lime and a copper catalyst. Both free and complexed cyanide are oxidized to cyanate in the pH range 8 to 10. Cyanide bound to iron is removed by precipitation as a ferrocyanide insoluble salt and other base metals are removed as hydroxides.The process was piloted in 1982 on barren bleed solution at Campbell Red Lake Mines Ltd., Ontario (2). Since 1982, the Inca SO2-air cyanide removal technology has been applied in twelve commercial installations. The process has significant advantages over other commercial processes in the completeness of cyanide removal and lower reagent requirements and costs.COMMERCIAL INSTALLATIONSBy the end of 1988 Inca will have applied its patented cyanide removal technology to twelve commercial operations. Three of these, namely Scottie Gold Mines, Dupont of Canada Expl. Baker mill and Carolin, all in British Columbia, Canada, have ceased cyanidation operations but SO2-air cyanide destruction results were good for all mills, particularly so for over two years for the Scottie mill.Removal of cyanide from CIL slurry tailings is applied at Equity Silver (9,500 tpd) and Inca's new 1,200 tpd mill at Inca/Golden Knight. Detoxification of CIP tailings is carried out by Colosseum California (3,600 tpd) and Canamax's Ketza River operation (360 tpd). Repulped tailings from Merril-Crowe flowsheets are treated at Total Erickson's Mount Skukum mill (300 tpd) and Skyline's Johnny Mountain mill (200 tpd) and barren bleed at Inco/Queenston's McBean mill (500 tpd). Lynngold's MacLellan mill (1,800 tpd) treats pond supernatant water. Plating shop cyanide effluents are decyanized at Kuntz Electroplating in Kitchener, Ontario. Many of the above commercial operations were described in some detail in previous publications (3,4). Typical installations are described in this paper. A summary of operating results is given in Table 1."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the conversion, at both laboratory and pilot plant scale, of a low-grade ilmenite to chlorination-grade feedstock that could substitute for imported rutile used to produce titanium tetrachloride. The concentrate was derived from the Tahawus, NY, lode deposit of ilmenite-magnetite in rock that contains anorthosite and gabbro. Charges of the ilmenite concentrate, containing 46.6 wt pct Ti02 blended with soda ash, were carbothermically reduced in an electric arc furnace, which separated most of the iron and left a high-titanium slag. However, the slag contained Ca, Mg, and Mn constituents that rendered the material unsuitable for continuous chlorination by causing plugging problems. After being ground and pelletized, the slag was reacted with S02 and air at 7000 to 9000 C, which selectively converted the harmful impurities to soluble compounds that were removed in a subsequent water or dilute HCI leach. In laboratory tests, the combined levels of harmful impurities were decreased from 5 to as low as 0.5 wt pct in leached slags. In pilot plant tests, leached slags sulfated at a rate of 10 lb/h averaged 85.5 wt pct Ti02 with pertinent impurity levels averaging 1.86 wt pct. The leached slag was successfully chlorinated in a laboratory fluidized-bed reactor at 9500 C to extract titanium as TiCI4.

Exploration at both Greenfields and Brownfields stages entails business risks of different nature and success rates. Greenfields exploration is exceedingly assumptive and the success rate of exploration or return on investment is low because exploration is an inherently risky business. Brownfields exploration on the other hand is less risky, as the geology is better understood, but generally speaking since the larger ore bodies close to surface have already been found the return is lower. In addition, most exploration at the Brownfields stage is generally more expensive due to extensive use of drilling. Surface geology mapping and expensive drilling have been key technical contributors to most exploration programs over the last two decades. However, as client expectations, logistics, target depths and complexity of exploration programs increase, there has been a growing emphasis on using geophysical techniques to complement other methods. Integration and optimization of various geoscientific disciplines is becoming more important in successful exploration programs of the future to reduce exploration risks, successful integrated exploration requires putting reliable geophysical parameters and correspondent petrophysical property contrasts into an assumed or conceptual geological model. This paper discusses a new multi-parameter geophysical methodology finalized in a unique conceptual geologic model which can be used either as a root model in grassroots exploration or as an efficient tool in Brownfields exploration to successfully find satellite orebodies of almost any size. The application of a new multi-parametric geophysical approach to Brownfields exploration is illustrated with examples from Manitoba, including a past producing nickel sulphide deposit in Lynn Lake and the Reed Copper deposit, currently in development.
