THIS paper deals with the subject of inbye power as the mechanical . engineer sees it, and invites discussion, particularly from the electrical engineer. At the outset, it will be necessary to clear the ground a little by some definite statements. In this question of compressed air versus electricity for the transmission of power and driving of machinery in underground workings, we must see that there are definite fields that compressed air on the one hand, and electricity on the other, can fill to much greater advantage than the other, and in which there can be little or no direct competition, at least for the present. It is under conditions where these fields overlap, and as to where the line must be drawn between the two, that the respective merits of each must be considered. Steam was the first means used to transmit power from the surface of a mine to drive underground machinery, and so long as distances were short and means possible to ensure fairly efficient use of the steam, and where the fire hazard was not in evidence, it gave fairly efficient service. I have in mind an instance during my own connection with the mines-a duplex pump at the shaft bottom at Princess colliery, driven by steam, and which used the steam compound and condensing; and, but for the mechanical difficulties, it was a not inefficient proposition. The steam was taken direct from the surface boiler-plant through a line down the shaft, and used directly at the pump, being in effect a straight conversion from coal to steam to work done. It was the mechanical arrangement, and failure of the pump in that direction, that led to its removal and replacement by something better in the way of an electrically driven turbine pump. Given modern mechanical arrangements, such as a steam-turbine drive on a high-speed turbine pump, and all other parts made in accordance with best practice in the art of steam generation and use, a steam-driven unit fully as economical would have been obtained. But the central electric supply station, and all that that means or promises (not always the same), turned the scale against steam.

Introduction When considering power in Alberta, there automatically come to mind ideas of either hydro or thermal generation, leaving in one's thought an uncertainty as to which one would propose. There is frequently an obvious source of power in some locations on our fastflowing rivers, the major possibilities being described in the report on Surface Water Supply and Water Power of Alberta issued by the Alberta Government in 1948, but it must be realised when reading that report that the sites so described will require extensive geological and other surveys before they can be exploited, and account must be taken also of the transmission distances involved in each instance. From a conservation point of view, where water power can be economically developed and power transmitted to the load centres, this should be done, and our thermal resources should be husbanded for our coming generations, especially if our water resources are falling owing to glacial shrinkage.

These volumes report on the study initiated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to develop and apply a methodology to quantitatively assess the probability and potential benefits of technological innovation over the next twenty-five years. The potential was recognized for new technology to solve copper industry problems in the United States. Objectives of the study were to: (1) Develop a methodology to obtain the opinions of mineral experts about future events -their likelihood of occurrence, and, conditional on occurrence, when and to what extent they are likely to occur; (2) Identify, select, and describe potential technological innovations which would have significant impact on copper production; (3) Implement the methodology and obtain the opinions of the mineral experts regarding selected copper technologies; and (4) Analyze the expected future benefits of successful technological innovations :n the copper industry. Although individual technologies are continuously examined throughout the copper 'community', this study is the first known comprehensive forecast of future copper technology. This study is also believed to be unique 1n that it represents the consensus opinion of over sixty expert copper technologists on the expected use of innovative technology in the industry over the next 25 years. THE war has forced the principal industrial nations of the' world into the strait jacket of a closely controlled economy; taxes have been heaped upon all enterprises in order to maintain the armed forces and to deprive the people of the ability to bid for goods now unavailable. These restrictions, controls, and taxes are unlikely to disappear entirely after the war has been won, for debts will remain to be paid with a long period of difficult readjustment. General statement.-The briquetting tests conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey had their beginning in the testing of coals and lignites at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis, Mo., in 1904. Briquetting tests were made at the fuel-testing plants at St. Louis, Mo., and at Norfolk, Va. Similar tests to be made at the experiment station of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburg, Pa., form an essential part of investigations looking to the determination of the fuel value of the coals and lignites belonging to or for the use of the United States. The tests have comprised (1) the manufacture of briquets to determine the adaptability of different coals and lignites to the process and the merits of different binding materials; (2) physical tests to establish the fitness of the briquets to withstand weathering, transportation, and handling; and (3) steaming tests to prove the calorific value of the briquets in boilers of different types used by the Government, and, by comparison with the raw coals, the benefits to be derived from briquetting. Details of the tests have been issued in other publications. list of Government publications on fuel testing and briquetting is given at the close of this volume. Tests at Norfolk.-The fuel tests conducted at Norfolk included a detailed investigation of a number of Virginia and West Virginia coals that are bought by the United States Government for the Navy and for use in constructing the Panama Canal, and are extensively used by the merchant marine, manufacturing plants, and railroads. Through a cooperative arrangement with the Navy Department steaming tests of the coals were undertaken to determine the relative merits of the same coal when burned raw or as briquets in marine boilers. Preliminary arrangements were made between Joseph A. Holmes, then expert in charge of the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and now director of the Bureau of Mines, and Rear-Admiral Charles W. Rae, Chief Engineer of the United States Navy. The tests were made on board the U. S. torpedo boat Biddle, designated for the purpose, beginning December 6, 1907, and ending January 27, 1908. The coal used in these tests came from the Sewell and Beckley beds in the New River district of West Virginia. With the particular equipment used in the tests both coal and briquets were far. from smokeless; consequently the data of this bulletin are applicable only by analogy to parallel operation with a coal more nearly smokeless, but nevertheless applicable with much reliability. The possibilities of coals of different composition are indicated by the data to be published in a bulletin of the Bureau of Mines, wherein the present authors describe a number of tests in which only a very slight amount of smoke was emitted while burning raw coal from the Pocahontas No.3 bed, West Virginia, and briquets made therefrom at rates of combustion very much higher than any rates used in the torpedo-boat boiler. At a combustion rate of 120 pounds of the Pocahontas briquets per square foot of grate surface there was scarcely any smoke. It was the original intention to make a set of preliminary steaming tests alongside a dock (which tests furnish material for this bulletin) and to finish with a set of running tests at sea; but the running tests were never made, for lack of time and men.

The contract objectives are (1) to develop safe practice guidelines which will minimize the chance of fires in underground fueling areas and (2) to develop a low-cost, reliable, automatic fire protection system for underground fueling areas. The effort described by this report covers the period from 21 June 1976 to 30 September 1977 and accomplished the following tasks: ? Preparation of Data Plan and Data Acquisition, mainly through visits to sixteen mine sites and a literature survey. ? Analysis of the accumulated data, providing design inputs for (a) evaluation of the fire problem; (b) development of safe practice guidelines; and (c) development of recommended design concepts for automatic fire protection systems. ? Preparation of safe practice guidelines for underground fueling areas. ? Preparation of recommended design concepts for automatic fire protection systems for underground fueling areas. ? Design and fabrication of fire protection system for installation at Pine Creek Mine, Bishop, California. ? Install system and perform underground fire tests at Pine Creek Mine.

This report is mainly concerned with the modification and development of a users manual for the Open-Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) developed at Penn State. Model Modifications included the introduction of a free-format input, the application of a Weibull random generator, facilities to stochastically simulate shovel-dragline operations, and routines to increase the flexibility in making truck assignments. At the same time, core storage requirements and execution times were minimized and all P.S.U. conventions were removed to allow operation on other computing systems.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated the potential availability of silver from 436 mines and deposits in 41 market economy countries (MEC?s) comprising five major economic categories of deposits: predominantly silver deposits and predominantly zinc, lead, copper, and gold deposits. This study evaluated the long-term cost and availability of primary silver production from 53 producing and 13 nonproducing predominantly silver properties in 11 MEC's and estimated the total recoverable silver from 370 properties as a coproduct or byproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold production. This study resulted in estimates of a demonstrated resource of 5.99 billion tr oz of recoverable silver as of January 1984. Of this total, 23.5 pet is in the 66 mines and deposits classified as predominantly silver properties. The largest quantity of recoverable silver, 43.9 pct, lies in the 121 properties classified as predominantly zinc, with 26.5 pct in 120 properties classified as predominantly copper, 4.1 pet in 21 predominantly lead properties, and 2.0 pct in 108 predominantly gold properties. At current silver prices, the economics of silver production favor silver that is a byproduct or coproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold, and much of the silver production in the United States from the predominantly silver mines is at an economic disadvantage in comparison with silver production in other countries.

"This paper traces briefly the historical development of coal handling systems to meet the needs of a rapidly developing thermal power generation technology. The wide range of operating requirements is demonstrated by comparing and contrasting the Wabamun GS of Calgary Power Ltd. and a typical modern Ontario-Hydro thermal plant. The problems of safe storage of large tonnages of coal in stockpiles are discussed, together with recommendations for stockpile management. The development of coal bunkers and their management is discussed in detail, together with future trends in the industry."

"Native antimony metal is rare and antimony generally occurs together with gold, lead, copper and silver. There are more than 100 antimony minerals, although the sulfide mineral stibnite is the main economic mineral.Antimony enters the supply chain either as a result of mining (primary production) or recycling (secondary production). China has by far the largest antimony resources and is, as a result, the world’s center for antimony mine production. While China remains the leading primary producer, accounting for 69 percent (80.5 kt or 88,700 st) of the global 117.5 kt (129,000 st) in 2017, market consolidation and regulatory inspections across China leading to closures of facilities have caused a significant decrease in Chinese output from 115.8 kt (127,600 st) in 2015 (81 percent of global production).Tajikistan and Russia are the next largest producers of antimony after China, both ramping up production in recent years. Russia could significantly increase its supply of antimony if Polyus moves ahead with supplying 10-12 kt/a (11,000–13,200 stpy) of contained antimony from gold tailings. Australia and Bolivia are also significant mine producers outside China. The value of the different ores varies based on the metal content of the concentrates, with the most valuable gold-bearing ores sourced from Australia’s Costerfield Mine and the least valuable mercury-bearing ores sourced from the Anzob Mine in Tajikistan. On average, Bolivian and Russian ores trade at an intermediate value between those from Costerfield and Anzob. Nearly all of the rest-of-world production is exported to China, where the ores and concentrates are processed into antimony ingots and oxides.Antimony ingot production is not as widespread as is the case with antimony mine production, owing to the high levels of pollution that are associated with antimony smelting. It is for this reason that smelting has been largely confined to China and other Asian countries ,such as Vietnam and Myanmar, where environmental legislation has historically been less stringent. Tajikistan has become a growing producer of antimony ingot since 2014, coming from the commissioned metallurgical plant at the Anzob Mine.Antimony oxide production is undertaken on four continents with China being the biggest producer. There is also a considerable amount of oxide production in Europe (mainly Belgium and France), which relies on imported antimony metal feedstock, mostly from China.A new antimony project under construction by Strategic and Precious Metals Processing (SPMP) in Oman made progress in 2016 and 2017, and after producing first metal in April 2016 in test facilities, was set to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2018. Commissioning had been moved back to June 2018, with a potential ramp-up to 2-3 kt/a (2,200 to 3,300 stpy) of antimony metal by the end of 2018. SPMP is also reviewing producing antimony oxide as part of its flow sheet."

The paper reviews the back-ground leading to the invention, discusses the process chemistry and historically tracks the commercial development. Engineering and cost considerations are presented.IntroductionThe year 1994 was particularly significant in terms of the technical and business development of the INCO SO2/AIR cyanide destruction process. The year marked a decade of service to the world mining community since INCO acquired the Canadian patent in 1984. In that time period, the technology had become widely recognized as the state-of-the-art process in the field of cyanide detoxification and today we enjoy the distinction of having licensed the process at over 50 project sites worldwide. The application for the process has mostly been in the mining industry in precious metal recovery plants where it offers treatment for a wide range of waste streams such as: CIP/CIL slurries, Merrill-Crowe barren bleed solutions and/or re-pulped filter cakes, tailings pond water recycle or discharge, make-up water to flotation circuits and feed to underground backfill plants. The process also applies to the treatment of high cyanide rinsewaters from metal plating shops. More recently the process is being applied to the rinsing and abandonment of heap leach pads where it has proven to be a very cost-effective application of the INCO process. The distinct advantages that have led to the success of the process are the ability to work on slurries as well as solutions and the significantly low cost of sulphur dioxide products. The process is safe and easy to manage and uses all forms of SO2(liquid, gas or salts) which gives the process tremendous versatility with respect to geographic application. In mechanized tunnelling operations performance, consumption and safety are main factors for jobsites. One of the most important components effecting these factors, especially in slurry TBM operations, are Slurry Treatment Plants (STPs). Inadequate/ suboptimally dimensioned and designed STPs create bottlenecks for tunnelling operation and jeopardize time schedules and performance. Inefficiently planned STPs could drastically increase consumption figures such as electrical power, bentonite, water and polymers, etc. Inaccurately selected and treated suspension properties can cause a high-risk potential for the whole job. This paper debates the relevant key parameters for STPs from start to finish of a project and its results in influencing factors from the manufacturer´s point of view.

Multiple subject classification has increased the total number of entries to almost 5,000. Helium citations are listed by 23 major classifications. The number of subclassifications has been greatly increased to minimize the time required for literature search. The use of automatic data processing has been extended in compiling the bibliography.

This is one of a series of papers written for the consideration of operators of small gold and silver mines in the West. The paper discusses smelting schedules, general smelting practices that have a bearing on rates, and the reasons for penalties or credits for certain constituents of ores. Crude gold and silver ores generally are shipped to smelters only when milling facilities are not available; however, high tailing losses in milling a high-grade or refractory ore or low smelting rates because of the fluxing value of an are may make direct smelting more economical.

"I HAVE BEEN looking forward to addressing this particular audience about Trans-Canada Pipe Lines because you men, more than most, understand the problems of the pioneer. Trans-Canada Pipe Lines qualifies as a pioneer on two counts: it is certainly pioneering a completely new industry in Canada -the long-distance transmission of natural gas -and it has at least a few of the problems that are expected and normal to any pioneering venture.This morning, I’m going to try to give you a sketchy picture of our project and a brief report on its current status and our progress to date; and then a broad picture of Canadian markets for natural gas.The physical characteristics of the Trans-Canada Pipe Lines project have been discussed so often that I am not going to take the time today to quote a lot of statistics on pipe sizes, miles, tons of steel, etc. Suffice it to say that this project, estimated to cost approximately $350,000,000, will be the longest large-diameter gas pipe-line ever built anywhere.Let me try to paint a broad picture of this great national project, using only a few basic 'round' figures.First, it involves exploration for and development of the natural gas fields in Alberta and other provinces -the cost of which will run into hundreds of millions of dollars.Then comes the gathering, stripping, and cleaning of the gas before it can be delivered to Trans-Canada. This will cost close to $100 million.Next we have the Trans-Canada Pipe Lines project for transmission of the gas to Eastern markets -estimated to cost $350,000,000 during the first three to four years and making natural gas economically available to one-half the population of Canada."

Mercury has been used by mankind since prehistoric times. It has been, and is now, widely used in industry and medicine and has unique properties which make direct substitution difficult or impossible. At present its principal uses are for electrical apparatus, control instruments, electrolytic soda preparation, mildew-proofing paints, pesticides, and medical and dental preparations. Deposits of mercury are less common than those of other base and precious metals, but some of the deposits are very large and have been ample to meet the world's past demands. The price of mercury has had many sharp fluctuations, but in general, the limited number of producers has resulted in a more stable price structure than that of many other commodities. The United States has been one of the main producers of mercury, and from 1850 to 1961 produced 3,247,704 flasks. Yearly production since World War I1 has varied from 4,535 to 38,067 flasks. An estimate of domestic resources of mercury producible at various price ranges was prepared for each mercury mine by combining specific knowledge of mercury mineralization with estimates of potential, based on geologic information and past production history. The sum of the individual estimates for each price range is shown in a table. A parallel estimate of nationwide production potential was made from a study of past price and production relationships. These were analyzed by plotting yearly production figures against the previous year's price, expressed in dollars of constant purchasing power. An equation was fitted to the data by mathematical means and was used to extend the curve into areas of higher than historic prices. Potential production rates at various price levels were taken from this graph. The estimated yearly production rates were used to make an estimate of total potential based on the premise that production rates and reserves have a proportionate relationship. The rate of developing mercury reserves during the period from January 1944 to January 1962 is considered, and it is shown that if this rate can be continued, the mercury resources of the United States, at a constant dollar price of $500 per flask, are adequate to support a production of 60,000 flasks per year for 30 or more years. This publication contains a history and description of the mercury industry in every State which has had production and individual descriptions of all mercury properties which have reported significant production. Accompanying tables give the important facts about all known mercury occurrences.

Major producers posted 25¢-per-pound increases on cadmium, raising their domestic quotes to $2.75 per pound. COBALT: Cobalt consumption in February, exclusive of salts and driers, increased by 21 percent compared with consumption in January. Significant increases in consumption occurred in cutting and wear resistant materials, welding and alloy hard-facing rods and materials, magnetic alloys, and other alloys. The major sales agency for cobalt in New York reportedly announced price increases, effective April 15, 1976, for cobalt metal, powders, and oxide. The new price for 250 kilo (551 lb.) drums of cobalt metal (granules or electrolytic cathodes), f.o.b. Port of New York, was quoted at $4.40 per pound. This is the first cobalt price increase since January 23, 1975, and is the result of a price increase by Sozacom, the official Zairian sales agent. Other cobalt producers are expected to raise their prices in line with the new quote.
