The water resource is key to survival of the mankind and this resource is now becoming critical in many parts of globe including India. As per an assessment of Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) of India, a huge shortfall of about 58 billion m3 of water is anticipated by the year 2050. In order to counter this shortfall, there is thrust from Government of India to adopt water conservation measures. National Environment Policy, 2006 of Government of India also stresses upon the need to take up water conservation measures for water security of the country. The coal mines in India provide an excellent opportunity to take up water conservations measures therein. The mine water is not acidic unlike western countries and it conforms to the prescribed regulatory standards. This nature?s gift is utilized in Coal India Limited by allowing mine voids to get filled with mine water. The net recharge potential of the opencast mining area is found to be about 5% in comparison to 2% in non-mining area offering good prospects for ground water recharge. The seasonal rainwater is also diverted into mine voids left at the end of mining operations which act as huge reservoirs/ pit lakes for storage of the water. They also serve as surface water bodies for recharging of water table in the surrounding areas. The area and space left from where coal has been extracted completely in underground mines and will not be entered by any man or machinery after the extraction, called goaf, are also potential source of water conservation. These additional water resources created are being utilized for meeting the industrial, domestic, irrigation and other requirements of the projects and local communities eliminating the need to tap other fresh water resources including ground water. Presently, 75% of the water demand of the coal mining project is being met from the water stored in the mine pits. In future, CIL is likely to create about 3.3 billion m3 of water resource, on an average, in its opencast mines alone. In the mine closure plan of opencast mines, the last cut is proposed to be developed into water body for recharge of ground water and creating additional water resources. A clean potential source of potable water is thus developed after mine closure. This will ensure water security of the country.

The MMG Century mine, which is the largest zinc/lead mine in Australia, began operating in 1999 and ceased mining from the open pit in July 2015, with processing completed in early 2016. Closure plans were developed from 2006, and detailed planning for closure commenced in early 2011 with the appointment of a dedicated closure planning resource. The site will continue to be managed during the active and passive closure phases to complete rehabilitation commitments and demonstrate that closure completion criteria have been achieved.Completion of the mining/processing phase of the project provides an opportunity to reflect on successes, missed opportunities and lessons learnt with respect to planning and execution of mine closure. This paper highlights examples of success at Century and also identifies key learnings and areas for improvement in progressive closure outcomes. Specific examples examine mine planning and execution involving bulk movement of waste rock and construction of permanent waste encapsulation landforms. The paper also provides recommendations for other sites that are planning for closure.Decisions made during the operational phase of the project life can result in a significant increase in closure liability and reduce the likelihood of achieving lease relinquishment. The Bureau of Mines conducted a four year (1985-1988) mineral assessment of the Juneau Mining District in southeast Alaska as part of its ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. Following an extensive literature search, the Bureau investigated mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences in the area. This report describes the results of Bureau work in the Eagle River area of the Juneau gold belt; a component of the Juneau Mining District comprising 87,000 acres between the Mendenhall Glacier and Berners Bay. Gold and silver have been the only metals having significant production from the area and occur mainly in quartz stringer and fissure type veins hosted by phyllites, greenschists, greenstones, altered diorite dikes and quartz diorite gneiss. Gold also occurs in several small placer deposits. Approximately 21,100 oz of gold and nearly 9,000 oz of silver were produced over a 60 year period. Currently, the only mining activity consists of some exploration and minor placer gold production. Inferred and indicated lode gold resources having mineral development potential total approximately 796,000 tons with a weighted average grade of 0.22 oz/ton gold.

"The Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) currently supports nine individual industry working groups focused on developing standards and guidelines for the mining industry. In 2013 the GMSG established the Industrial Comminution Efficiency (ICE) working group to develop freely available guidelines for plant operators to quantify the operating efficiency of industrial comminution circuits. This initiative has engaged a diverse group of representatives from mining companies, equipment vendors, consultants and metallurgical laboratories with vast experience and capabilities in the field of comminution. The GMSG has issued the first two guidelines from the ICE working group in 2015–2016, with the third guideline having completed the approvals process and being in the final stages of editing ahead of release later in 2016.Two of the ICE guidelines present methods to quantify comminution circuit efficiency, and a complementary guideline describes best practice methods to collect the necessary samples and data to furnish these assessments. Collectively the guidelines cover sampling, survey data collection, laboratory testing procedures and calculation processes to allow the user to generate a relative circuit efficiency factor for the comminution circuit at the time of survey. The reference energy consumption is calculated considering the measured F80, P80 and ore strength at the time of survey, using either or both of the Bond or Morrell methods presented in GMSG guidelines dedicated to each method. The guidelines consequently provide the end user with practical tools to perform circuit efficiency analysis and to readily quantify the impact of optimisation efforts.This paper presents the content of the three ICE guidelines and describes their intended application.Citation:Giblett, A and Daniel, M, 2016. We have developed a high-performance, flexible scheme for interpolating multi-dimensional data. The technique can reproduce exactly the results obtained, for example, from Ordinary Kriging and related techniques in 3D, or from Thin-Plate Splines (Briggs' minimum-cuwature algorithm) in 2D. Moreover, com- pared to traditional implementations of these algorithms, our method enjoys large computational-cost savings. The new approach produces an interpolation that obeys a Partial Differential Equation (PDE). The PDE may arise from physically based arguments, but its form can vary widely. It might be specified only implicitly (as through a Model Variogram), or be nonlinear (although a performance penalty could then apply). While a formal equivalence between Kriging and Splines has been known for some time (Matheron, 1980), the present derivation, from radial basis functions, further illuminates this connection. Thus, for example, we can make explicit the PDEs that underlie some of the Model Variograms most often used in Geostatistics. Besides its practical utility, the work thereby ac- quires a theoretical interest.

"Molybdenum, in the form of molybdenite, is a common byproduct of many copper mining and concentrating operations. Contrary to most copper sulfide minerals where recovery is principally liberation controlled, the recovery of molybdenite is much more complex with fully liberated particles commonly lost to tailings. It is this complexity that facilitated the necessity for a geometallurgical investigation of molybdenite from the Bingham Canyon deposit. The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect mineralogy and/or mineralogical attributes (i.e. morphology, angularity, liberation, size) have on the recovery of molybdenite in the processing circuit. A set of samples was collected from the ores and products produced by Rio Tinto Kennecott’s Copperton Concentrator. All samples were analyzed using normal polarized reflective light, Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and X-ray diffractometery (XRD) techniques. The results of this investigation revealed the presence of two distinctly different types of molybdenite, which have been identified as the two polytypes of molybdenite, i.e. hexagonal (2H) and rhombohedral (3R). The 2H polytype occurs as textbook-shaped particles in quartz-molybdenite veins that are located in the core of the Bingham Canyon deposit. The 3R polytype occurs as disseminated, “ball”-shaped particles with a dull or frosted appearance along the margins of the mineralized intrusive body or central core. Concerning their metallurgical behavior each type exhibits unique metallurgical properties that are consistent with those reported in the published literature. For instance, the 2H polytype is easily ground and kinetically “faster” floating with surface attributes that are amenable to higher rates of recovery. This commonly results in the production of a high quality molybdenum concentrate under normal operating conditions common to most copper concentration operations. In contrast, the 3R polytype is difficult to grind and kinetically “slower” floating with surface attributes that less amenable to recovery under normal operating conditions. Therefore, in deposits with higher concentrations of the 3R polytype, modifications to the normal operating parameters may be necessary to improve the recovery of molybdenum. Finally, a preliminary investigation into the metal budget of porphyry Cu and Mo deposits indicates that a positive correlation may exist between the total economic metal budget and the polytype content. For example, higher concentrations of the 3R polytype appear to be more prevalent in Au-enriched porphyries versus Mo-enriched porphyries. This observation may also serve to help explain why it is easier to obtain high rates of recovery in Mo ± W-rich deposits, which contain little to none of the 3R-polytype. Consequently, the potential for the metal budget of a porphyry deposit to be used as an indication of the molybdenite polytype present, as well as its impact on the economics (exploration) and/or on the processing circuit (plant design) could exist. In conclusion, this investigation highlights the necessity of understanding the mineralogical properties or characteristics of molybdenite and/or other economic mineral(s), as these can and will have a direct impact upon the performance and plant optimization."

This paper outlines the the methods currently being used in the West Wales Area for preventing the occurrence of any outbreak of spontaneous combustion. Stress is placed on the importance of correlating the position of a Rider Seam which is prone to spontaneous combustion. The recent introduction of the UNOR Recorder has contributed to the ability to monitor the CO content of the general body of the air during any incident. The use of modern sealants and improved methods of applying them have enabled the few instances of spontaneous combustion in South Wales to be treated promptly and efficiently. The authors describe the current spontaneous combustion problems at two collieries.

"Movement of mill charge in the centrifugal mill is essentially different from that in the vibration mill with circular path despite the apparently similar mode in the motion of mill body. As proved e.g. in [11], this results in substantial advantage regarding the comminution intensity of the centrifugal mill over the conventional vibration mill accounting approximately to one order of magnitude.Back in 1983, Bradley et al. presented a model of the centrifugal mill based on the kinetics of the mill charge by regarding it as a lumped mass. On the other hand, numerical modeling by ‘discrete element method (DEM)’ enabled us to observe the movement of each ball in the centrifugal mill with an extremely minute time intervals (Inoue et al., XX IMPC in 1997). The former approach rendered simple, even though approximate, expression of the mill behavior, while the latter method was advantageous in describing the behavior of the mill in terms of individual events taking place in the mill body, even though the result did not reduce to a simple expression. The characteristics of the centrifugal mill described by both these approaches proved to be in a degree of agreement. Thus, the kinetic approach was capable of presenting the overall view of the mill, while the DEM model was informative of the details that could not be depicted well enough by the simple math expressions."

The employment of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is the default delivery method for the realisation of traffic, utility and primary resource underground space worldwide, with hundreds of kilometres completed safely each year. This is not yet the case for the mining sector in Australia, specifically underground coal mining. The safety advantages of TBM delivery when compared to New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) delivery, or that of drill and blast, remains unrealised.With coal access drifts ranging between 1000?m and 3000?m in length, the construction of these facilities using TBMs could be done in a fraction of the time when compared to current practice. TBM world records currently stand at 435?m/week or 1600?m/month for the 7.0?m to 10.0?m range. Resource owners and developers should embrace the opportunity to deliver access to their orebodies in only a few months, excluding machine assembly and disassembly time.There are challenges in utilising TBMs for construction of Coal access drifts, such as; TBMs generally being bespoke design, maximising capital efficiency for drift development, and geotechnical variances between projects. This paper explores safer and more cost-effective options. This paper also provides detail of how the configuration within a completed drift could be optimised to ensure all site specific needs are met with regard to future use of the drift. The paper also includes descriptions of the engineering solutions that are available for physical and atmospheric challenges specific to coal drift applications and how the TBM manufactures are adapting to the regulatory requirements are also covered.Due to downward pressure on high cost bases and ever increasing safety requirements the popularity of TBMs in the Australian mining sector can be expected to increase and eventually become the default delivery method for coal drift construction, building them cheaper, faster and?safer.CITATION:Sibthorpe, D, 2014. Bottom ash is a solid waste stream in a Waste-to-Energy (WTE) processing plant during the combustion of the municipal solid waste (MSW). In the Netherlands, bottom ash contains typically about 18% metals originated from the MSW, and current industrial practice could recover about 10% metals through magnetic and eddy current separators. The remaining 8% as the finer particles is difficult to recover through current physical separation technology. Among various alternatives, vitrification is one of the promising options to immobilize the ash and recover the remaining metals. During vitrification a homogeneous glassy slag and a Fe-Cu based alloy were obtained. In the cur-rent study, the metal alloy recovered from the bottom ash originated from a Dutch Waste-to-Energy plant contains about 82 wt% Fe, 12 wt% Cu and 6 wt% other alloying elements and impurities such as C, S, P, Ni etc. The generated alloy does not have direct commercial applications, and separation of copper from iron-based alloy is critical to obtain the market value of both copper and ferrous constituents. To find a suitable processing route of this metal alloy, various alternative approaches have been considered for an efficient removal of copper from the alloy, and the focus in the present study was on the sulphide treatment at elevated temperatures of 1400 ~ 1500oC. The tested sulphide systems include pure FeS, FeS containing sulphide mixture (such as Na2S and Al2S3), pyrite (FeS2) mineral, ZnS containing sludge as an industrial waste. It was found that the carbon saturation of the alloy is proved to be an essential condition for a proper phase separation. The results showed that FeS mixed with Na2S, ZnS containing sludge and pyrite are effective sulphide systems for copper removal with a removal efficiency of 92% by using pyrite and 95% by zinc sludge at a S/Cu ratio of around 7 times of the stoichiometry. The copper content drops from 12 wt% to about 2 wt%. However, it is still difficult to remove copper completely from the alloy in a single step, and a multi-step operation is needed. The present research is expected to contribute both to the utilization of the metal recovered from bottom ash, and to the general recycling of steel scrap where copper removal from the steel scrap is a critical issue.

Frother concentration is a variable which significantly affects the flotation performance by decreasing bubble size and helping froth stabilization. Variations in frother concentration, which mostly go unnoticed in industrial operations, may affect these functions. Some factors that can cause variations include the fact that frothers are normally dosed based on feed tonnage and not solution concentration, unstable frother delivery, incomplete dissolution for low solubility frothers, addition of frother-free wash water, remnant frother in recycle waters and frother partitioning to the froth. A colorimetric technique developed for determining frother concentration on site makes it possible to detect the occurrence of these problems and to establish their magnitude, allowing conditions to be adjusted to reduce frother concentration variations. By sampling and analysis, frother distribution throughout a circuit can be established, referred to as ‘frother distribution mapping’. Experiences at several concentrators processing sulphide ores are used to illustrate time restrictions for sample analysis, and to demonstrate temporal and spatial frother concentration changes as a consequence of variations in the grinding stage, recycled waters containing frother, and frother partitioning.

This final report documents the cooperative efforts of the Engineered Systems Division and the Mining Equipment Division of FMC Corporation during performance of Bureau of Mines Contract H0252091. Improved operator compartments incorporating overhead canopies, logical arrangements of controls, and design features offering greater operator comfort were developed and retrofitted to the FMC 320A roof bolter and 6L shuttle care The vehicles were evaluated in underground operations at separate mine sites. The successful evaluation has resulted in incorporation of the designs as standard features of the 320A roof bolter, and the 5L, 6L, and 10L shuttle cars.

Introduction The Pinto Valley open-pit copper mine is located in southern Arizona, 11 km (7 miles) west of Miami. Production at Pinto Valley began in 1974. About 350 Mt (386 million st) of ore and waste was removed by the end of June 1982. At that time, the mine was using more than 90 major equipment items with a total mobile fleet numbering 320. Some of the major equipment consisted of four Marion M4 rotary drills; six P&H 15, 11.5- and 19.1-m3 (15- and 25-cu yd) shovels; and 24,136- and 154-t (150¬and 170-st) Wabco haulage trucks. This equipment was used to move more than 139 kt/d (154,000 stpd) of ore and waste. The mill was processing more than 50 kt/d (55,000 stpd) of mine ore. Shutdown A two-week vacation shutdown began in July 1982. Maintenance jobs were scheduled, and most employees left for the vacation. During the vacation period, copper prices fell below $1.32/kg ($0.60 per lb). Inventories remained at alarmingly high levels. At this point the mine was losing more money operating than it would by being shut down. The vacation shutdown was first extended to five weeks. But, after further evaluation, the mine was shut down indefinitely. In Dec. 1982, Cities Services Co., owner of Miami Operations (which included the Pinto Valley mine and mill), was acquired by the Occidental Petroleum Corp. On March 1, 1983, Occidental sold the operations to Newmont Mining Corp., and Newmont created Pinto Valley Copper Corp., as a wholly owned subsidiary. Copper continued to be produced by the Pinto Valley solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX- EW) plant because of its low cost per pound of production. To ensure proper equipment care during the shutdown, maintenance management was given three goals; • maintain the SX-EW plant; • maintain the environmental and pollution control systems such as domestic water pumps and mine dewatering; and

Choosing a mining method for an underground ore body is a complicated and often iterative process. Advances in technology give the design team an overwhelming array of possibilities for methods and equipment. Hecla's recent discovery of the deep Gold Hunter ore body has given the staff at the Lucky Friday Mine the exciting challenge of determining the optimum mining method. Taking an ore body from prospect to production requires traditional resource characterization, including drilling, delineating and modeling. Developing the mining plan is an evolving process, changing with each new piece of information as the project progresses through exploration and development.

A mine is essentially a series of operations, including drilling and blasting, crushing, milling, flotation, and leaching, that are interconnected and therefore interrelated, with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often causes potential economic benefits and energy savings to be missed. However, the PIO methodology is a thorough approach which considers these individual process activities within the context of the whole process. The basic principle is to optimize the process as a whole, rather than each process step in isolation from the others. Metso?s Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) group offers a global consulting service for the mining and construction industries. A significant amount of this consulting work involves process integration and optimization (PIO) studies. When conducting a PIO study, every aspect of the process is considered. In addition to drilling and blasting, transportation, handling and storage, crushing, screening, grinding, flotation, separation, and recovery, other aspects including equipment utilization and energy consumption and even greenhouse gas emissions are also included if necessary. In a PIO project, it is very important to understand what type of material is being processed at any point in time. That is, which domain or domains is the material part of? This is necessary in order to observe the effect of different ore sources (and the blending of sources) on concentrator performance. Linking the ore from the pit to the concentrator required the development of an ore tracking system. As a result, PTI developed a radio-frequency based material tracking system called SmartTag?. This system allows tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles, and finally into the concentrator. Using the SmartTag? system, definitive correlations can be made between the performance of the plant and the plant feed characteristics, including the domain from which the feed ore originated. Since its commercialization in 2007, SmartTag? has been used in the majority of PTI?s consulting projects and several permanent systems have been installed worldwide1. Successful applications of the SmartTag? system have encouraged development to allow the system to be used in a wider variety of plants, in particular plants with finer crushing and screening stages. This paper describes how the SmartTag? system is being utilized by PTI and the benefits being gained by its use in PIO projects, as well as presenting some case studies.

"An underground environment with high air temperature and humidity conditions generated from various heat and moisture sources can significantly affect the thermoregulation processes of the human body. This can lead to a series of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat stroke. The majority of the metabolic energy of a mine worker results in the production of heat. If the human body is to maintain thermal equilibrium, then this metabolic heat must be transferred to the ambient surroundings at the same rate. The heat loss from the human body occurs through a combination of heat transfer processes, such as respiratory heat exchange, convection, radiation and evaporation. If the heat loss from the human body to the ambient surroundings is less than the metabolic heat produced, the excess will be accumulated within the human body, which will result in a rise in the core and skin temperatures. This can ultimately lead to a heat-related illness or a combination of heat-related illnesses. This paper aims to discuss major heat-related issues and provide an overview of various mine ventilation and cooling systems, which can be employed to overcome high levels of heat and humidity in underground mines. In this paper, the effects of heat exposure on the health, safety and productivity of the mine workers are also highlighted. IntroductionMining in the United States remains one of the most hazardous industries, despite significant reductions in fatal injuries over the last century (Coleman and Kerkering, 2007; Saleh and Cummings 2011; Jacklitsch, Musolin and Kim, 2016). Occupational health hazards within the mining industry include hazards that are physical, such as traumatic injury or hearing loss; chemical, such as silica or diesel particulate matter; biological; ergonomic; and psychological (Donoghue, 2004; Saleh and Cummings, 2011). The effects of some of these hazards can be diagnosed immediately, while many, like black-lung and silicosis, will have long-term effects on the health, safety and life quality of mine workers (Donoghue, 2004; National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, NIOSH, 2000). Among these hazards, exposure to heat and humidity can significantly affect the safety, health and productivity of mine workers, particularly in deep and hot underground mines (Roghanchi, Sunkpal and Kocsis, 2015). Short-term acute heat exposures can cause a rise in the core temperature of the human body, which can result in a heat-related illness or combination of heat-related illnesses. Adverse long-term chronic heat exposure can generate serious occupational heat-related illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases, mental health problems and chronic kidney diseases. High core body temperatures coupled with dehydration can generate negative behavioral effects such as physical fatigue, irritability, lethargy, impaired judgment, loss of dexterity and loss of concentration (Xiang et al., 2014)"

British Columbia is an important producer of a variety of industrial minerals for both domestic and export markets. Some commodities such as limestone, dolomite, gypsum, calcium carbonate, silica, barite and magnetite are raw materials for well-established industries located in British Columbia, Alberta and northwestern USA. Others, like magnesite, sulphur, jade, asbestos, dimension stone and clay products, are mainly exported in processed form to overseas customers. Companies are developing markets for relatively new mineral products, including pumice, volcanic cinder and zeolites. A number of attractive geological targets have been identified by industry while research by government geologists has outlined the potential for refractory minerals, gemstones, garnet, nepheline syenite, carbonatites, residual kaolin, igneous apatite and peat.

Microwaves have considerable potential as an energy source in both mineral processing and metals extraction. In this research, the utilization of microwave radiation for the heating of a gibbsite type bauxite ore was investigated. Firstly, thermogravimetric studies were performed in order to characterize the dewatering processes of the ore. Secondly, both the real and the imaginary permittivities, which are the fundamental properties that determine the interaction of microwaves with any given material, were measured for the bauxite ore as a function of temperature. The changes in the permittivities were shown to be related to the dewatering processes. Subsequently, the effects of operating variables such as processing time, sample mass, particle size, microwave power, sample bulk density and carbon and magnetite additions on the sample temperature in a microwave field were studied. The results showed that under suitable conditions the bauxite ore could be readily heated. Therefore, there is considerable potential for the application of microwaves for the heating of bauxite ores.

Although the number of operating longwalls (approximately 100) has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have significantly increased and have in some cases more than doubled. As a result of the increase in production, control of respirable dust continues to be a problem. Therefore, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Dust Division, initiated a study to investigate the availability and adequacy of technology for controlling dust on longwall mining operations. The study involved 23 longwall mining operations in three different Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Each operation was visited for a full shift. Respirable dust samples were collected on face personnel and at fixed locations along the face. Parameters in place to control dust were noted with special emphasis being placed on obtaining quantitative data relative to ventilation, headgate dust controls, cutting drum sprays, external machine sprays and cutting sequence. Attempts were made to correlate dust control parameters in place at the time of the visit to dust concentrations measured at the tail, on the tail shearer operator and to the average concentration of dust determined from averaging all the measurements from the occupations sampled. The parameters in place to control dust were also compared to the gamut of technology known to be available to control dust. This paper presents a discussion on the effectiveness of the parameters in place to control dust and on the availability of technology for the control of dust on longwall mining operations.

In this paper, the development of research and practice on the separation process of fine complex Cu-S ore at a Copper Mine in south of China, was discussed. Since early 1980s, various processes were used, such as the process of bulk flotation-separation, the process of selection flotation and the process of iso-flotation. Especially when the process of selective flotation was put into operation, further development was achieved in beneficiation results, but the difficulty in separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite has not been solved yet, so causing a poor quality of Cu concentrate. The author has successfully developed a new separation process characterized by the use of collector thionocarbamate and fast flotation. The selectivity of fine chalcopyrite and pyrite was greatly improved. This process supplied a new route for the treatment of fine complex Copper sulphide ores.
