Prior to 1903, the world's supply of sulphur was primarily from surface deposits in Sicily. The discovery of the first salt dome sulphur deposit in 1867 and successful development of the Frasch process for recovering the sulphur resulted in a large part of this essential element being supplied from these mines since 1920. Although the basic process is the same today, engineering and technological developments have evolved to allow its application under many adverse conditions. These and other challenges for the industry in today's environment will be discussed in the paper.

NMR360 is developing a suite of chloride-based metals extraction processes, with the first commercial operation scheduled for commissioning late in 2018. It is critical, therefore, that with the introduction of any new technology, that the circuits do not suffer from mechanical failures which will compromise the operation. Although chloride leaching is at atmospheric pressure and relatively low temperature, the main challenge is preventing corrosion, since the high proton activity makes even a small amount of acid behaves as though it were concentrated. An additional challenge in concentrated chloride circuits is the potential for solids precipitation. In this context, therefore, correct valve selection is crucial, and NMR360 has partnered with CGIS to ensure that the Severe Service Valves (SSVs) needed will perform over and above the definitions of the Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS) of the Valve and Fittings Industry. This paper outlines what the minimum requirements are for SSVs in chloride leaching applications, drawing on five decades of industry experience from one of Canada’s leading valve experts.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the average global temperature has risen over the last century. If this trend continues over the next century, the IPCC projects a significant increase in temperature and a rise in sea level. The changes in climate could adversely impact human health, agriculture, water resources and ecosystems. Most national and international agencies have concluded that our use of carbon-rich fuel is responsible for global warming through the greenhouse effect. In the future, the situation may get worse if the increased need for energy in countries like China, India and Brazil is fulfilled by burning fossil fuel. Advanced natural gas-fuelled vehicles have the potential to reduce carbon monoxide and reactive hydrocarbon emissions substantially compared to gasoline vehicles. Further environmental benefits can be realized by using a blend of natural gas and hydrogen. Such an approach will help create an infrastructure for an eventual transition to hydrogen.

Ground control failures are one of the main causes of accidents in the underground stone mining industry. Some of the fundamental tools for rockfall hazard identification are related to rock mass characterization and geotechnical discontinuity mapping. Recent technological advances in these methods are related to remote sensing techniques and point cloud processing software for automated discontinuity mapping. Remote sensing techniques, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, generate multimillion point clouds with millimetric precision, capturing the structure of the rock mass. The automated point cloud processing tools offer alternative algorithm-based methods to characterize and map these discontinuities. However, their applicability is constrained by multiple factors such as site specific conditions of the rock mass and the parameters used within the mapping algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of automated discontinuity extraction software compared with manual virtual discontinuity mapping. Sampling windows from laser-scanned sections in an underground limestone mine are defined and mapped using discontinuity set extractor (DSE). Results from the virtual discontinuity software are compared with manually extracted fractures from I-Site based on reviewing orientation, trace length, spacing, number of extracted discontinuities, and processing time. The analysis determined that the automated mapping algorithm was able to identify the same discontinuity sets that had been manually mapped. The automated mapping software mapped an excessive amount of smaller fractures, which caused the comparison of both mapping techniques to be unsuccessful in terms of trace length and spacing.

DURING the past few years a radically new process for the magnetic roasting of iron ores has been investigated and developed by Pickands Mather & Co. and the Erie Mining Co. in the Erie laboratory at Hibbing, Minn. This process, originally devised by Dr. P. H. Royster of Washington, D. C., involves the use of a roasting technique quite different from older methods. It has now been demonstrated that iron-bearing materials can be roasted as effectively as by any previously known method, and at a much lower cost. The increasing shortage of highgrade iron ores in this country has accelerated the search for new methods that would permit low grade materials to be utilized. The concept of magnetically roasting low grade nonmagnetic ores such as the oxidized taconites and then separating such material magnetically has always had considerable appeal. The magnetic concentration idea is attractive because of the sharpness of the separations and cheapness of the method. Heretofore, however, the equipment and the processes available for the magnetizing-roasting -step have left much to be desired. The customary equipment available for reduction roasting has been: 1-multiple hearth furnaces, 2-rotary kilns, and 3-shaft type kilns. In addition, it is understood that some work has been done in magnetically roasting fine ores by a process using the FluoSolids principle, but little information on this process is available. The multiple hearth kiln has been used the most but first costs and operating costs have been high because of low capacity, high maintenance, and poor gas utilization. Magnetic roasting can be done in a rotary kiln, but the radiation losses are high and the conversion to magnetite is usually unsatisfactory because of poor contact between the gases and the solids. Of the shaft-type furnaces, probably the most efficient yet developed is that designed by E. W. Davis of the Minnesota Mines Experiment Station. This furnace was operated at Cooley, Minn., during 1934-1937 but was abandoned in 1937 because the operation was uneconomic. Heretofore the basic concept behind most magnetic roasting processes has been the idea of heating iron ore to a temperature of 800° to 1100 °F in a strong reducing atmosphere, preferably either carbon monoxide or hydrogen. Temperatures under 800°F were undesirable since excessive roasting time was required. Temperatures over 1100°F were avoided because of the danger of converting part of the iron to ferrous oxide which is nonmagnetic. In the new roasting process, the operation is carried on in a shaft furnace using a controlled atmosphere containing a low percentage of reducing gas. The temperature in the roasting zone is considerably higher than with the usual reducing gas and this speeds up the reduction time. Portions of the spent furnace gases are cooled and recirculated and this together with the good contact between ore and gas makes for high reducing gas utilization. High heat economy is secured by recuperating heat from the roasted ore by passing the cold reducing gases countercurrent to flow of ore. The heat transfer principle is similar to that employed in a pebble stove and to that used in the Erie Mining Co. furnace at Aurora, Minn., for pelletizing fine magnetite concentrates derived from taconite. The theory of controlled atmosphere during the roasting operation can best be appreciated by inspecting the equilibrium diagram of the Fe-C-O system shown in Fig. 1. An inspection of this diagram shows that in certain areas magnetite, Fe3O4, is the only stable form of iron. A further inspection of this table shows that if the proper ratio is maintained between carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, such a gas will be reducing with respect to hematite, Fe2O3, and will be oxidizing with respect to both ferrous oxide, FeO, and iron, Fe. It should be kept in mind that the formation of ferrous oxide in a roasting operation is harmful, since this oxide is nonmagnetic; if it forms in any quantity, it will cause substantial loss of iron in the ensuing magnetic separation step. If a ratio of approximately three parts carbon dioxide to one of carbon monoxide is maintained, the resulting operation can be carried on at a relatively high temperature without fear of over-reduction. Specifically, most of the tests in the Erie furnace have been made at a temperature of 1500° to 1600°F, with an entrant gas containing approximately 5 pct carbon monoxide and 15 pct carbon dioxide, with the remainder largely nitrogen. It should be remembered that the ratios of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide shown in Fig. 1 hold even though the bulk of the gas is an inert gas such as nitrogen. It may surprise many to learn that a gas containing as low as 3 pct carbon monoxide, and 12 pct carbon dioxide with the remainder nitrogen is an extremely effective reducing gas in the 1000° to 1600°F temperature range. The reducing gas is not limited to carbon monoxide, and mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide may be used effectively, provided that a similar ratio is maintained between the reducing gases and carbon dioxide and water vapor. For a more detailed explanation of the theory involved, the reader is referred to U. S. patents 2,528,552 and 2,528,553. From a safety standpoint, the weak reducing gas used in the furnace offers an advantage. Its composition is such that it is well below the limits of explosion should air enter a hot furnace. This condition is not true with the usual reducing furnace, in which a gas rich in carbon monoxide or hydrogen is used. Rubidium and cesium were discovered by Bunsen and Kirchhoff about 100 years ago. These two elements are by no means as abundant as sodium or potassium. Their occurrence in minerals is widespread, but usually as minor constituents. There is no known specific ore containing rubidium, but rubidium is found replacing the. other alkali metals in .some minerals.. Perhaps the highest concentration of rubidium found in one mineral is in lepidolite, KLi(OH,F)2A12Si3010, which contains from 0 to 3.5%*Rb20. 0n the average, lepidolite contains about 0.5% Rb20. Other sources of rubidium are carnallite, KMgCl3?6H20; pollucite, H20.2Cs20.2AI203.9SiO2; rhodizite, R20.2A1203-3B203; biotite, H2K(Mg,Fe)3A1(Si04)3; sea water, rivers, marine and fresh water organisms, soils, and plants. Cesium, even though it is the least abundant. of the stable alkalies, has a specific ore. Pollucites a hydrous cesium aluminum silicate, may con¬tain as high as 42.5% Cs20, although again, the average Cs20 content is about 25% among the handful of known deposits. Other cesium-containing minerals are lepidolite and carnallite. Rubidium and cesium are very much like potassium in chemical properties, consequently, they are hard to separate. Because of the difficulty in obtaining pure cesium and rubidium compounds coupled with the scarcity-of supply, prices were high and the two elements enjoyed little industrial use. Condensates produced by SiO(g) and CO(g) have a crucial importance in silicon production. Condensation will follow the reactions 3 SiOðgÞ+COðgÞ→ 2 SiO2 + SiC and 2 SiO ðgÞ→Si+SiO2. Solid compounds generated during silicon production contain Si, SiO2 and SiC in different microstructures and amounts. In industrial systems, condensates limit the SiO(g) escape to the off-gas system. On the other hand, they can block the gas flowing from the high temperature zone, hence the necessity of studying an optimized condensation process. This review discusses SiO(g) condensation and its interaction with CO(g). The report gives an overview of the condensates found both at laboratory and at industrial scale. The two main compounds are the Si–SiO2 and the SiOx–SiC mixtures. The hypothesis on the mechanism of formation of SiC–SiOx condensates is presented through a wide selection of performed works. The advantages and disadvantages of the former experimental procedures are discussed.

This paper mainly reported separation manganese silver oxidized ores process by amylum de-gradation reduction and its influencing factors. When dosage is given according to nMn : nH2SO4 : n(C6H10O5)n : nH2O=1:k21.8: k116.66:30, the amount of up to 95.93% Mn leach rate and less than 2% silver loss can be obtained. Cyanidation process was used to extracted silver from leaching Mn residues. Silver leach rate could reach 94.15% at consumed amount of 1kg/t NaCN for 1h. Silver leach recovery rate was more than 92.27% by leaching Mn and cyanidation two-step processes so manganese and silver were separated effectively.

"The Avon mica district of Latah County, Idaho, is situated on a heavily forested spur of the Thatuna Range at an average altitude of 4,000 feet. The nearest rail connection is at Avon, a small farming settlement 7 miles to the south. The main supply point is Moscow, Idaho, which is 35 miles by graveled and graded county roads from Avon.Discovery of mica-bearing pegmatites in 1885 was followed in 1888 by exploitation of several outcrop deposits. Although factual data are unavailable, past production appears to have been well in excess of $100,000. Recent production (September 191 to April 1945) amounted to 65,824.78 pounds of trimmed sheet mica and 33,294.17 pounds of punch mica having a total gross value of $434,298.The several properties of the district are variously owned by estates, individuals, and the State. When active, all wore under lease or sublease to individual operators.The deposits are in an area of pre-Cambrian schists adjacent to a small granitic outlier of the Idaho batholith. The pegmatites are nearly concordant in dip and strike to the foliation of the enclosing schists. The more persistent bodies are usually tabular, lenticular, or pegmatite. Individual dikes range in length from 10 feet or less to 300 feet.The recoverable crude mica content of the pegmatites ranges downward from a maximum of 115 pounds per ton of pegmatite mined. Material discarded in rifting and trimming operations further reduces recovery to a maximum of 5 pounds per ton -of pegmatite mined. The average recoverable sheet content of the 'recently operated .deposit is estimated at 2 pounds per ton of pegmatite -mined. Available data indicate that about 21 percent of the district's recent production of trimmed sheet mica has been ""Group A"" material suitable for exacting condenser requirements. A few of the dikes contain local concentrations of beryl.Reserves of the three known major deposits of the district are estimated at about 600 to 1,000 tons of combined ""indicated"" and ""inferred"" crude block mica. One of these deposits is inferred to contain between 150 and 450 tons of beryl.It is believed that those mica reserves are minable only under a cost-market price ratio similar to that established during 1943 and 1944. A small part of the reserves can be ""high-graded"" under the present price structure. Profitable recovery of the beryl would require a market price four to five times that paid in 1944.Preliminary examination of the Avon mica district was made by the Bureau of Mines in the summer and fall of 1942. A study of the Muscovite mine and a brief reconnaissance of the surrounding district led the Bureau to recommend that the district be explored by angle-dozer trenching."

The prestressed concrete industry in particular, and the precast concrete industry to some extent, are rank newcomers to the concrete construction field compared to the cement, ready-mixed or concrete masonry industries. This young industry reflects its youth and vigor in its enthusiasm, optimism and the belief that it can reach any goal it chooses to set -- and it is setting its sights high. The prestressed and precast concrete industry fully expects to become the major structural and architectural material by the 1980's. Before exploring how the industry expects to reach this goal, a brief look at the origins and the growth of the industry may be useful in an evaluation of the feasibility of this goal. It was always recognized that concrete, strong and efficient for supporting loads which cause compression, was weak and inefficient when used to carry loads which induce tension. Thus the reason for reinforced concrete in which the concrete efficiently carries the compression in a flexural member while low grade steel bars reinforce the concrete in the areas 'of tensile stress. (Fig. 1). The steel being relatively inexpensive, can passively, but quite effectively carry tensile force while the concrete carries compression. The concrete in contact with the reinforcing also protects the steel from corrosion and acts as insulation to provide a superior "built-in" fire resistance. The major disadvantage of reinforced concrete relative to its main competitor, steel, is its weight in relation to its load-carrying capacity. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to model gas compositions in underground longwall coal mine gobs to study oxygen ingress and the development of potentially explosive methane-air mixtures that may form in the gob. The scenarios studied involve various headgate and tailgate ventilation and inertization schemes and controls. In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at Colorado School of Mines have used an innovative meshing approach, allowing easy adaptation of the CFD model to adjust to a variety of bleeder and bleederless mining geometries, with gob porosity and permeability scalable over a wide range. This paper presents the methodology of the meshing and scaling approach along with recommendations for using CFD modeling in longwall gob ventilation applications. The new meshing technique was utilized to evaluate the function of a back return in a progressively sealed gob. The back return was successful in maintaining sufficient oxygen concentrations in the tailgate corner of the longwall face.

THE province of Saskatchewan, situated in the center of the Great Plains region of Canada, has, like most prairie areas, an essentially agricultural economy. Most of its population of about 860,000 is located in the southern half of the province in the farming and ranching areas. To the north of the prairie is a broad forested belt supporting a considerable timbering industry, and the northern one third of the province is glaciated pre-Cambrian rock formation. This latter area is, relatively barren of vegetation, but the presence within it of a considerable variety of radioactive, noble and base metals, and industrial minerals has been shown by prospecting in recent years.1 Glacial Geology The Keewatin ice sheet, considered to have accumulated in the country to the west of Hudson Bay in Pleistocene time, covered at its maximum advancement almost all of Saskatchewan and extended south of the international boundary. Only in the Cypress Hills in the southwest and around Wood Mountain in the south central portion of the province did the preglacial formations escape the action for this glacial period. The bedrock of the plains and forest areas therefore is overlain by moraines and modified glacial drift, which vary in thickness from a few feet to 400 or 500 ft.2 Glacial action in the pre-Cambrian area of the province was largely erosional, most of the more recent formations and some of the pre-Cambrian rock being transported out of the area to the south and west. It has been estimated that about 13 pct of this area is composed of lakes and rivers not too adaptable to rail or water transportation, so that until the use of aviation for exploration purposes became general; development of the area was slow. To the south, the heavy. mantle of glacial drift has to some extent deterred the discovery of industrial minerals in the bedrock underlying the forest and prairie regions.3 At the same time, this drift contains numerous deposits of those most elementary and necessary industrial minerals, sand and gravel. Sedimentary Basin The major feature of the sedimentary deposits underlying the plains regions is the basinal structure known as the Moose Jaw syncline, which runs from the southeast corner of the province in a northwesterly direction. To the west. of this syncline the formations curve upward, then have been faulted and further upthrust to appear at the surface in the foothills of-the Rockies in Alberta; to the east and north they curve upward into Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan, but the surface contacts are covered mostly with glacial drift.2,3 The axis of the syncline dips to thee southeast, so that there is also an upward trend of the formations along the axis to the northwest. In illustration of the regional structure underlying the province, the pre-Cambrian basement has been logged in drillholes at the following depths in several locations: Ogema (south central), 9390 ft; Gronlid (northeast), 2599 ft; Vera (northwest), 4422 ft; Big River (north northwest), 2348 ft. Fig. 1 indicates the general surface geology of the province, ignoring such glacial overburden as may overlie many of the bedrock formations. Also indicated is the approximate location of the axis of the Moose Jaw syncline.4 Industrial Minerals Clays: The province is fortunate in possessing a widespread distribution of clays of ceramic value, ranging from those used for heavy structural products to the high grade pottery and china clays. Shales suitable for brick and tile production are found in the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary formations across the south of the province where the glacial drift is thin or nonexistent. Many deposits of glacial lake clays suitable for such wares are found scattered over the rest of the province south of the pre-Cambrian area. The Whitemud formation of the Upper Cretaceous is a narrow sedimentary, band of secondary clays found intermittently, at points, across the, south of the province where glacial action did not disturb or remove them.8 In the southwest corner of the province, around Eastend in the Frenchman River valley, the refractory clays of this formation are contaminated somewhat with iron compounds or other alteration products of basaltic rocks. This eliminates the use of those clays in true whitewares, as they fire to creamy buff shades at the lower temperatures and to a blue-specked grey at cone 8 to 12, (2280°F to. 2390°F), the range commonly used in firing whiteware. However, for use in the production of colored artware, caneware, stoneware or crockery, and sewerpipe, this type of clay makes an excellent body that requires little or no addition of flint, feldspar, or other fluxing materials such as are required in the higher class of ware.9 It is not a grade of clay that can be shipped great distances to the manufacturing centers, but a market for considerable tonnages has developed at nearby Medicine Hat, where cheap natural gas is available for the firing of the ware. Farther east in the south central portion of the province, the clays of the Whitemud formation are generally more refractory and white burning. The formation is divided into three zones, consisting of white clays, brown shale, and white sandy clays.

The United States contains one of the world's largest reserves of uranium. Domestic production and exploration activities, however, have declined since the early 1980s due to weaker-than-expected growth in nuclear power demand and to foreign competition. The main result has been that more costly and less productive conventional mines and mills have closed. Meanwhile, industry productivity as measured by uranium output per employee has increased threefold since 1980. At the end of 1992, only six plants, all nonconventional, were operating in the United States. Due to cost considerations and increased environmental awareness, any additions to existing capacity are expected to be met through nonconventional in situ leach plants.

One of the most important processing engineering tools for designing mineral processing facilities is linear circuit analysis. This technique, originally conceived and developed by Meloy, Williams, and Fuerstenau nearly four decades ago, provides fundamental insights regarding how unit operations interact and respond when arranged in multi-stage processing circuits. Researchers have successfully utilized this tool to improve the operating performance of industrial processing circuits incorporating coal spirals, magnetic separators, mineral spirals, and eddy current separators. More recently, advanced versions of this tool have also been developed to provide a standardized framework for circuit mass balance calculations, to output exact analytical solutions to mass yield and value-based efficiency expressions, and to estimate uncertainty propagation in separation circuits. This article reviews the historical development of linear circuit analysis, describes how the technique has evolved to address more complex circuit design problems, and presents industrial case studies that highlight the importance of this process engineering tool.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered critical minerals for industrial and defense sectors. REEs are not as rare as the word “rare” portrays; yet, the exploitable and/or profitable deposits of REEs may be found only in certain geographical areas. The political and social conditions characterizing these areas may not always be in favor of mining operations. These conditions are imposing the need for extra consideration on the geopolitical constraints prior to any decision-making and before any mining project begins. This study assesses the risk related to mining projects for areas that feature REE deposits based on a geopolitical viewpoint. Probable ranking differences between the current assessment and a 2015 assessment are discussed. The comparative indicators used and the appraisal procedure applied in this comparison are based on a number of different geopolitical indicators. Several ranking changes occurred between 2015 and 2019.

THE Dome ore-bodies are more or less isolated and are mined. by shrinkage stoping. An interwoven system of veins is mined at Hollinger '.1.nd requires close filling. Deep mining is the problem at McIntyre. Dome ore contains a large amount of free gold, which is recovered on blankets. An all-cyanide flow-sheet is \lSed in the Hollinger mill. Flotation concentration is an important feature of McIntyre mill operation. Therefore, these three mines afford an unusual opportunity to compare gold mining and milling methods. The purpose of this paper is to describe the conditions existing at the Dome, Hollinger, and McIntyre mines and to outline the mining and milling practice at each property. Figures 3, 4, 5, and 7 are reproduced from the Canadian Mining ]011rna/, September, 1935 (Young, A. W., Mining at Hollinger), and Figures 8 to 11 from the Engineering and Mining Journal, November, 1933 (Keeley, D. E., Development and Mining at McIntyre). "IntroductionELEMENTAL sulphur occurs in three types of deposits: in salt domes in the Gulf Coast region of the United States and Mexico, from which over 90 per cent of world native-sulphur production is obtained; in sedimentary deposits such as those in Sicily, which are thought by some authorities to contain the largest world reserves of elemental sulphur; and as surface deposits, associated now or in the past with some phase of vulcanism, the type which bas the greatest world-wide distribution.Deposits of the volcanic type are the subject of this paper.From antiquity until the successful development of the sulphur-bearing salt domes at the beginning of this century, important sulphur production for local needs was obtained from volcanic deposits in many parts of the world. Due to technical and economic factors, however, producers could not compete in price with sulphur from salt domes. •The result has been that, except in Japan and Chile, little sulphur was produced from volcanic deposits from about 1910 until the start of the Korean war in 1950. Shortly after the outbreak of the Korean war, an acute world sulphur shortage developed and prices skyrocketed in many countries up to several hundred dollars a ton. Interest in volcanic deposits was renewed and exploitation of many was undertaken. Few of these operations have been successful, mostly due to inability of management to solve technical problems.While important volcanic deposits of elemental sulphur have not been reported ( 1) in Canada, and it is doubtful that any will be found, data presented in this paper may be of interest to students of ore genesis.This paper is based on field examination of numerous deposits of the volcanic type in North and South America."

"Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine and ultrafine slurries. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidisation water. In a former study, we investigated the physical mechanisms that govern the transport of ultrafine particles (in the range 10 to 80 µm) inside Falcon UF concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling. Initially, we derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. The present paper proposes an extension of the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios. The paper discusses how hindered settling has been added into the initial model to account for solid concentration effects. The modified model is tested against experiments carried out with a laboratory scale UF Falcon concentrator from dilute conditions up to 30 vol%. A good agreement between measurements and model predictions is obtained, which confirms that our hypotheses about the physics of separation inside a UF Falcon separator remain valid even at high concentrations.INTRODUCTIONThe Falcon concentrator is a fast spinning bowl that is fed at its centre of rotation. It uses centrifugal force to separate particles that are transported inside a thin liquid film that flows upward along the inclined wall of the bowl (McAlister and Armstrong, 1998). Due to differential settling, dense and coarse particles are concentrated inside the bowl whereas light and fine particles are rejected with the overflow stream. The fast rotation speed of the bowl yields high centrifugal force several hundred times the attraction of Earth. Despite the thinness of the liquid film (between 100 µm and 1 mm with a Falcon L40) where separation takes place, the Falcon concentrator can treat high flowrates (up to 30 L/min). At the bottom of the bowl, an impeller transmits the bowl rotation to the feed, which drains upward by centrifugal force as soon as it hits the base of the spinning bowl (Figure 1)."

THE problem of compensation for labour is probably the oldest and most complicated one in history. The wage that a man receives is possibly the most concrete thing he gets out of his job and, rightly or wrongly, is generally considered by him to be the most important item in connection with his daily work. How today workers in an equitable way has been the study of industrialists for many years, and a great number of ideas have been tried out in an effort to arrive at a reasonable solution of the question. The idea of establishing a measuring stick for various types of work has intrigued industrial management for a long time and, after considerable study, the principle of Job Evaluation has taken form unti1, at the present time, it is becoming increasingly useful to industry at large. Job evaluation is a plan which is used to determine the relative worth of occupations by means of arbitrary measuring scales. These scales are developed for individual industries and are generally 'tailor made' for each particular case. There are as yet no absolute methods of measuring the work done by human beings and, as a result, one has to depend on comparative values to arrive at conclusions. However, job evaluation has provided us with a basis of negotiation for wage rates which is more satisfactory than mere guess work or persona! opinion. It supplies a common ground for discussion which is understandable by all taking part and ensures that thinking with regard to wage setting is carried out along standard lines.
