This paper reports on testwork exploring the dissolution/reprecipitation reaction: ZnS + 2HCl ? ZnCl2 + H2S, as part of a process for the production of pure ZnS. In spheroidal form, this would constitute a premium fonn of zinc refinery roaster feed enabling the production of pure ZnO. The research focused on the influence of proton activity on dissolution of zinc concentrates from Brunswick Mining & Smelting, Red Dog and Tara. The results and thermodynamic data suggest that the three concentrates contained significant amounts of the more reactive mineral wurtzite, although XRD analysis showed mainly the presence of the mineral sphalerite.

Just picture, if you will, the hot, lonely and desolate Ochre Mountains west of Salt Lake City. There works a grizzled old miner, his boots worn down, his clothes hang on a body stooped by years of hard labor. His skin is wrinkled and leather toughened by many years in the hot desert sun. His ever faithful burro stands patiently in the shade of a large rock as the tired old miner examines ore samples just acquired that very morning. Suddenly the old man's eyes widen, his breathing becomes rapid. 'Leaping to his feet, with a gleam in his eye, he cries, "Eureka, I'm rich, I've found the mother lode. This is where I will start my digging. " Without warning, the silent wilderness is alive with wild, shouting, charging figures! Frightened the old miner glances about him wide-eyed and pan- icky. His heart sinks, dismayed he now knows all is lost, this is the end. For there leaping from behind rocks and brush papers in hand, are the men from the Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management, State Mine Inspectors, OSHA, MESA, EPA, OEO, and the never ending list of regulatory bodies related to todays mining industry.

"In 1960, with the opening of the Chisel Lake mine near Snow Lake, Manitoba, the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, commenced a new phase in their mining operation -that of bringing ore to Flin Flon over 100 miles of railroad.The schedule of operations required to accomplish this, together with an outline of some of the problems of handling ore at 40° and 50,0 below zero, are discussed. The facilities required to thaw and unload from twenty to fifty cars per working day are also described."

Leonardite , a naturally occurring , partially oxidized form of lignite with a high content of humic acids , was investigated as a binder for iron ore pellets . Although insoluble in original condition , leonardite forms watersoluble salts with good binding properties when treated with certain alkalis such as sodium hydroxide . Soluble leonardite imparts excellent dry strength to pellets , but green strength is somewhat lower than that obtainable with bentonite . However , green strength can be improved by adding a small amount of calcium hydroxide to the leonardite - concentrate mixture . Leonardite binders were used successfully on three of the four different concentrates tested .

Monitoring devices have been installed at several mine sites to assess the potential for the development of acid rock drainage (ARD) in waste rock, spent ore, and tailings material. In addition, instrumentation has been designed for monitoring changes in water quality in pit lakes. These devices monitor temperature, oxygen, water movement, and water chemistry in the waste rock pile. This information can be used to evaluate the current and future ARD risk, the effectiveness of caps and covers, and provide information to aid in the design of other reclamation strategies that limit ARD development. The instrumentation includes nested thermistors and oxygen sensing ports, neutron access tubes, heat dissipation units (HDUs), and lysimeters. Many of the monitoring devices can be linked to a datalogger and telemetry systems, enabling monitoring data to be downloaded from the office.

Heap leaching with thiosulfate is only used in one location for the treatment of a refractory preg-robbing gold ore initially pre-treated with bio-oxidation. The chemistry of thiosulfate leaching is complex. Further work is required to develop a better control of the system. A mild refractory gold ore containing pyrite and chalcopyrite was used in this study to investigate the use of thiosulfate as an alternative heap leaching technology. Preliminary bottle rolls tests indicated that similar gold extraction was obtained with cyanide and thiosulfate. In the column leach test, effects of thiosulfate, copper and ammonia concentrations, and their ratio on both gold extraction and reagent consumption, were assessed. The range of reagent concentration were: 0.1 - 1.0M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.03 - 0.10M CuSO4*5H2O, 1.0 - 6.0M NH4OH. The solid-liquid ratio was in the range of 0.83:1 to 5: 1. Best results showed that 72% of gold was extracted in 50 days with 0.3M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.05M CuSO4*5H2O and 6M NH4OH or a combination of 1.0M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.03M CuSO4*5H2O and 3M NH4OH. The reagent consumption at solid/liquid ratio of 3:1 was 37 - 48.6 kg/t (NH4)2S2O3 and 0 - 0.62 kg/t CuSO4*5H2O. The results of thiosulfate leaching were also compared with cyanide leaching.

The common problem of new and conventional technology of copper production is the copper losses in the slags, which may be divided into mechanical and physico-chemical losses. In the first group can be included particles of mechanically entrained or floated unsedimented matte particles which coexist with slag. On the other hand, the physico-chemical losses are caused by solubility of copper in the slag in the form of sulphide and oxide. The copper losses in the slags from different processes has been predicted by calculation from thermodynamic data and compared with those determined by microscopic examination and quantitative electron microprobe analysis. Depending on the forms of copper losses in the slag the reduction of copper losses in the slag or the slag cleaning process could be suggested.

THE present period of depression in the iron industry, with the resultant close approximation of the cost of production to the selling-price of pig-iron, should make the discussion of this subject at this time not only interesting but, profitable. It is possible that it may result, in the collection of data, which when added to those set forth in this paper will clearly indicate the influence of the rate. of driving a blast-furnace upon its fuel-economy. The question is not whether an excessive rate of driving (meaning a rate definitely in excess of the average rate in the United States) results in, an increase in the fuel-consumption, but rather whether a rate considerably less than the average does not result in a marked decrease in the fuel-consumption. The commercial and metallurgical sides of. this problem must be kept separate. With a large margin between the cost of production and the selling-price of pig-iron, and a plant already in operation, it is frequently profitable to sacrifice a couple of hundred pounds of fuel per ton of pig-iron in order to secure the greater gross profits resulting from a larger tonnage. When this margin decreases with a plant in operation, or when the determination of the size of a new furnace intended for a certain production . confronts the management, a clear understanding of the effect of the rate of driving upon fuel-economy becomes necessary. If it be granted that slow driving leads to low fuel-consumption, it should he borne in mind in the design of a new plant for the production of a certain tonnage that the adoption of an economical rate of driving increases only the size of the furnace proper, whereas, due to the decrease in quantity of blast required on account of the decrease in fuel burned, the stoves, the blowing-engines, the boilers and the piping may be de-

McCrone Associates, Incorporated has examined 71 samples of airborne mine dusts using the techniques of x-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis and light microscopy. This report details the procedures which were used in this work and documents the results which were obtained.

"A hoisting plant design should satisfy two basic requirements:1. to provide the necessary materials handling capacity, including ventilation where applicable, while meeting the requirements of good practice and, as a minimum, government regulation; and2. to optimize the economics of the project. Selection of hoisting equipment to meet the first objective is a complex but logical engineering process. The necessary calculations of payloads, accelerations, speeds, rope strength, hoist size, and power requirements are very readily carried out on computers or programmable calculators. A variety of hoist options can be quickly examined to assess the effects of changes in design parameters.Meeting the second requirement involves balancing the costs of various hoist arrangements and shaft designs, together with the time cost effects of differing shaft sinking rates and potential advances to be gained by concurrent level development. The proposed mine layout is significant here, as is the possibility of future shaft deepening and/or production increase. The availability of used equipment may be significant, both as regards first cost and delivery time. The factors are interactive, with their relative effects .varying from project to project. This paper sets out the primary factors to be considered."

"The Polymetallic Twin Metals Project deposits in Northern Minnesota are being developed by Twin Metals Minnesota. Amongst the flowsheet alternatives being examined at a prefeasibility study level is one involving flotation of a bulk concentrate followed by high temperature autoclaving of the concentrate using the PlatsolTM Process to solubilize all the valuable metals in the concentrate (Cu, Ni, Pt, Pd and Au). Autoclave operating conditions have been established in which recoveries of all the pay metals are in the 92 to 99% range, and the autoclave residence time has been reduced to an hour. The stability of the precious metals in solution after autoclaving has been assessed, as well as the impact of internally recycling process liquors to the feed to the autoclave.INTRODUCTIONPlatinum group metals (PGMs; platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium) are traditionally recovered from their ores by production of a high-grade concentrate by flotation and/or gravity concentration followed by smelting of the concentrate. Concentrates are smelted to remove nonsulphide minerals and converted to remove iron and sulphur. The resulting high PGM grade matte is processed hydrometallurgically to leach the base metals, leaving a residue with a very high grade (20-40%) PGM concentrate for final refining to individual PGMs. Due to the complexity of this process and its high capital cost, this process can only be applied economically to high grade PGM ores. Lower grade PGM concentrates might be accepted as copper and nickel concentrates but may not yield attractive payment terms for the PGMs. The mineralized Duluth Gabbro region of Minnesota hosts several low grade base and PGM deposits and Twin Metals Minnesota is working to develop the Twin Metals Project deposits. Earlier studies at both pre-feasibility and feasibility level, by other mining companies, have failed to yield an economically viable project based on the traditional process. It is possible to produce a saleable copper concentrate from these ores, but economic recovery of nickel and PGMs into saleable concentrates proved elusive.In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s the Platsol™ process was developed at SGS in Lakefield, Ontario (at the time Lakefield Research Limited) for the NorthMet deposit (also within the Duluth Gabbro) owned by PolyMet Mining. The process developed was a high temperature chloride-assisted pressure oxidation process capable of dissolving simultaneously the base metals (Cu, Ni, Co, Zn), gold and the PGMs."

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions2 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made, Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

One critical factor in open pit mining projects is the estimation of the recoverable reserves. The reason for this is that at the valuation stage there is a lack of information about future metal prices and production costs. Consequently, the estimation of the recoverable reserves needs to be done based on a fixed break-even cut-off grade (BECG), in which fixed expected metal prices and production costs are assumed throughout the operating life of the mine (OLM). In this paper, an alternative technique for estimating the recoverable reserves of an open pit mining project is presented and explained in detail. The main characteristic of this technique is that it estimates the recoverable reserves of the project using mining costs as reference: this is done due to the fact that mining costs are easier to model than metal prices. Another important characteristic of this technique is that it uses the uncertainty of the geology of the orebody, given by simulations of the deposit, to make final strategic decisions, such as the selection of the operating life of the mine and the optimal production rate, which minimise the risk of not achieving future production targets while maximising the upside potential of future rewards. As it will be shown, the final outcome of the proposed technique is the generation of a robust open pit design, that include cutbacks and ultimate pit limits, called the marginal open pit mine design (MOPMD). One characteristic of the MOPMD is that, at each production period, it will be characterised by their respective geological uncertainty, given as probability distributions of ore, waste and metal quantities, and by marginal economical project indicators, such as cut-off grades and metal prices, among others. Barrick Gold Granny Smith Mine is currently undergoing conversion from an open cut operation to an underground mine at the Wallaby deposit. The underground project commenced in 2005 with the development of the reserves immediately below the pit and is now currently entering a production ramp-up phase for mining of these two initial surfaces below the pit. With increasing gold prices the owner has been forced to re-evaluate the underground project and has decided to investigate the potential of a deep level mine. This deep level underground mine presents a collection of challenges with the most notable being exploitation of a series of well separated near horizontal lodes ranging in thickness from less than 1 to 20 m. A variety of room and pillar mining methods are employed for extraction with careful consideration to resource recovery and pillar design for long-term stability. Compounding these deep level challenges is a need to accelerate mine level development to maintain the production profile of the mine. This paper describes the challenges, key learnings and outcomes of the studies undertaken to date associated with this project.

During the decade of the nineties the conventional method of primary lead smelting (sinter machine/blast furnace) was successfully challenged by the introduction of novel direct and continuous smelting processes. In combination with a significant shift in market structure, as well as more stringent government regulations these modem technological innovations like the QSL, Kivcet, and Isa/Ausmelt processes became more than major competitors. They have proven to be economically and environmentally viable. The intensification of the metallurgical reaction by applying oxygen enriched or pure oxygen bath or flash smelting principles resulted in cost savings and a higher flexibility with respect to raw materials and additives usage. By synchronizing individual auxiliary plant sections with the smelting process a virtually waste- free production and low-emission mode of operation with nearly optimum energy exploitation is achieved. The primary lead industry will gradually substitute the sinter -blast furnace operation with novel high-energy efficient technologies in the new millennium.

A NOVEL practice in the bituminous coal industry is the accelerated method of burning coal to ash used in the laboratory of the Fidelity washery of the United Electric Coal Companies, Du Quoin, Ill. Development of this method has supplanted the tedious float-and-sink process for plant control at this plant. In normal operation the plant operators have available within thirty minutes the accurate ash percentage of the coal loaded in the railroad cars and can therefore make adjustments to maintain a practically uniform quality of washed coal, regardless of the variations in washery feed.

The theory of sampling has progressed slowly over the last century. The concepts of correct sampling were known to mining engineers such as D W Brunton in the 19th century. It was recognised early in the 20th century that the Poisson distribution of particles carrying the target analyte was the key to the uncertainties between samples of a given mass. However, no efforts were made until the 1980s to determine the entire sampling distribution as a function of sample mass. The variance of sampling was made clear by Gy and others, but none attempted to determine the entire sample assay density function until J H Venter in South Africa applied the method of characteristic functions to the problem.Venter applied the method to a specific case of very low analyte concentrations in samples of very fine particle size where his assumption of constant sample mass was justified. When his general methodology is applied to the more general problem, it can be shown that the assumption of constant sample mass is no longer justified and leads to some anomalous results for sampling variance. Venter’s method can be expanded to allow for a statistically variable sample mass and to take into account the size distribution of particles that carry no analyte.This paper presents the basis of Venter’s work and shows how the approach can be easily modified to yield results for the variance that are consistent, for example, with the work of Gy. It is also demonstrated that the entire sampling distribution can be determined without undue computational burden when sufficient information on the material heterogeneity has been collected.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2014. The history of commercial processes for zirconium/hafnium production and separation is reviewed. A new technology is then proposed as a potential alternative for zirconium/ hafnium separation in a simpler, cleaner way than achieved with current processes. Primary sources of zirconium always contain small amounts of hafnium that must be removed during production of zirconium metal for nuclear applications. This separation is usually carried out by a solvent extraction process, developed in the 1950s, that selectively extracts hafnium, as a thiocyanate complex, using methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK). Environmental problems inherent to this process are the high aqueous solubility and low flash point of MIBK, and possible gaseous contaminants formation generated by the decomposition of the thiocyanic complexes in hydrochloric acid medium (H2S, HCN, mercaptan’s formation). The present work shows how these problems could be avoided by using organophosphorous extractants that were unavailable when the MIBK process was developed.

The United States is being invaded... by foreign capital: marks, francs, pounds, yen, lire, riyals, you name it: On almost any given day the Wall Street Journal will contain a new report on a department store, newspaper, bank, hotel, agricultural land, supermarket chain, et a1 being bought into by overseas investment. Xenophobic reaction to this revised national condition has begun to set in. Several farming states have and are introducing legislation to monitor foreign land buying. In Congress a mandatory reporting requirement for foreign purchasing is currently under study. In a relatively short period the country has reverted from world leader- ship in overseas acquisition and involvement to become itself one of the prime investment opportunities in existence. Interestingly enough, one of the industries where this changed status has become most apparent and pronounced is within that small/regional/segmented/low value-to-weight bulk commodity enterprise ranked as the backbone of the nation's construction activity. U.S. cement making is not only undergoing internationalization in its ownership, but also in its product, equipment, and engineering expertise.
