X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides useful information about the composition of an ore sample in terms of quantification of crystalline phases and amorphous content. The use of new, fast detection systems implemented in CubiX FAST industrial diffractometers creates the opportunity to use this technique in exploration and modern process control. Besides the chemical composition of iron ores, their phase composition is also an important factor for exploration, quality control and processing. In the analysis of iron ore, XRD can identify the phases containing iron, such as haematite Fe2O3, magnetite Fe3O4, and goethite FeO(OH), and any other mineral phases present, especially silicas. Quantitative analysis is possible by various classical methods such as straight line or polynomial calibration with standards, but modern quantification analysis techniques such as Rietveld analysis or full pattern autoscale analysis are attractive alternatives, as they do not require any standards. These methods offer impressive accuracy and speed of analysis. Another analysis technique offering great benefit to ore exploration and process control is cluster analysis. This technique greatly simplifies the analysis of a large amount of data, eg from drill core samplings, and automatically sorts closely related scans of an experiment into separate clusters and marks the most representative scan of each cluster as well as outlying patterns. This can facilitate multi-dimensional compositional mapping of ore deposits, identifying regions of favourable mineral composition and allows fast and reliable tracking of the process. It is the most economic procedure to have automatic data evaluation without involving any dedicated personnel in the process. Details of the techniques used, sample optimisation methodologies, results, data precision and limitations will be discussed. The approaches have enormous potential as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ore materials in an industrial environment.

"Information diffusion potential of a social media user affects how quickly information about a mineral project can diffuse through that user. If management can use social media and network analysis, in community engagement program, to understand how fast and how far information will diffuse to communities and followers of particular social media users, it can selectively focus on the most influential users. This paper proposes a method to examine the information diffusion potential of social media accounts. The work uses Gephi, an open source software, to extract and analyze data from different Twitter handles to predict their information diffusion potential. The work uses case studies of real Twitter users (e.g. mining news organizations and bloggers) associated with mining to illustrate the approach. The case study results show that there are significant disparities in information diffusion potential that will demand selective attention. This research will help mines develop effective social media engagement strategies. INTRODUCTION The mineral industry provides raw material for industrial activity to support our society (Martens and Rattmann, 2001). Mines have changed conventional mining practices to sustainable ones because of the negative impacts of mining and increased public awareness (Wang et al 2016). The concept of sustainable mining is getting mature as stakeholders (e.g., governments, investors and host communities) are getting involved in mining projects (World Economic Forum, 2014). The failure of mining companies to address the demands of these stakeholders might result in failure to acquire social license to operate (Thomson and Boutilier, 2011). The social license to operate (SLO), if granted, is mutually beneficial to all stakeholders. Mines prefer being granted SLO and keeping it to avoid any kind of social unrest due to their operation (Prno, 2013; Moffat and Zhang, 2014). Mining communities can grant different levels of SLO; ranging from withholding SLO to psychologically identifying with the project (Joyce and Thomson, 2000; Thomsan and Boutilier, 2011). Most of the previous work to understand community perceptions and SLO in mining is generally qualitative (ICMM, 2012a; Thomson and Boutilier, 2011; Prno, 2013; Moffat and Zhang, 2014; IFC, 2014). In particular, there is limited work on how community perceptions change over time due to information diffusion (Boateng and Awuah-Offei, 2017). However, SLO changes with respect to time (Yates and Horvath, 2013), which can result in risks that are not easy to predict. Mine managers and engineers have a desire to understand these changes so as to mitigate these risks (Que and Awuah-Offei, 2014; Que et al., 2015)."

Unique mineralogical and petrological properties of black shale in the copper ore deposit of the Foresudetic Monocline (SW Poland) resulting from three lithological layers have been described in terms of its unfavorable behavior in the ore processing circuits. A concept of processing of a part of the black shale fraction from the flotation circuit of the concentrating plant by separating a by-product enriched in the shale matter was presented. This by-product represents the tailings of the first cleaning flotation and, as a hard-to-treat circulating middlings, overload the cleaning operation in the flotation circuit. It was found that the investigated by-product cannot be effectively up-graded using standard xanthate flotation. This is due to a fine dissemination of sulfide minerals in the dolomitic and clay shale particles significantly enriched in organic carbon. The content of the organic carbon is similar to that in the petrographically "pure" black shales. After a comprehensive examination of the shale by-product it was recognized that the investigated middlings can be regarded as a specific shale concentrate for individual processing. The effect of non-oxidative leaching of middlings with sulfuric acid on their further flotation was presented. It was shown that non-oxidative leaching is a selective process, in which calcium and magnesium carbonates decomposition leads to effective liberation of sulfide minerals which were finely disseminated in the hydrophilic carbonate gangue. Leaching of the flotation feed with sulfuric acid selectively decomposes carbonate minerals and consequently enhances flotation results. Saturation of leaching slurry with gaseous carbon dioxide favorably creates non-oxidative conditions and leads to a great decrease of the electrochemical potential of sulfide particles as well as hinders their solubilization. Partial carbonates leaching from middlings resulted in evident liberation of valuable minerals. Consequently, it resulted in an increase of both recovery and grade of concentrates obtained by flotation of shale by-product after non-oxidative leaching.

"Maximizing the value of each tonne of processed ore is the goal for all operations. Cyanidation processing of gold-copper ores has been challenging since its first use in 1889. The current practice treats a bleed or the total flow of mill solution to recover copper as copper sulfide (by sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening), or to recover the cyanide (by acidification-volatilization neutralization). The process presented uses the adsorption of copper cyanide by carbon and the selective elution of copper from carbon to concentrate copper into a smaller stream. Copper contained in the smaller stream is precipitated as copper cyanide.RÉSUMÉ Toutes les exploitations ont pour objectif commun d’optimiser la valeur de chaque tonne de minerai traité. Depuis sa première utilisation en 1889, la méthode de traitement par cyanuration des minerais aurifère et cuprifère s’est révélée complexe. La pratique actuelle traite la saignée ou le débit total d’une solution de traitement du concentrateur pour récupérer le cuivre sous la forme de sulfure de cuivre (par sulfuration, acidification, recyclage et épaississement), ou pour récupérer le cyanure (par acidification, volatilisation et neutralisation). Le procédé présenté dans cet article utilise l’adsorption sur charbon actif de la solution de cyanure de cuivre et l’élution sélective du cuivre depuis le charbon pour concentrer le cuivre en un plus petit jet. Le cuivre contenu dans ce plus petit jet est précipité sous forme de cyanure de cuivre.INTRODUCTIONProcessing gold-copper ores by cyanidation has been a cost-control challenge since the cyanidation process was first used in 1889. Copper cyanide is stable only in the cuprous state, not the cupric. This factor results in the oxidation of a mole of cyanide per mole of nonchalcocite copper extracted. Each mole of copper extracted forms a cyanide complex with a minimum of 3 mol of cyanide. This cyanide-to-copper mole ratio is required to dissolve gold. The oxidation of cyanide and copper complexation with cyanide results in high cyanide consumption for copper-gold ores, which is a significant operating cost.One challenge in processing gold-copper ore is the cost of cyanide related to the extraction of copper. Processing 10,000 t/d of ore containing 1,000 mg/kg copper and 10% copper extraction yields 1,000 kg/d of copper. Currently, processes to remove copper from cyanide leach solution treat either the total flow of the barren or a bleed of the barren. The two processes used for copper-gold ores are sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening (SART), which produces a copper sulfide product for sale; and acidification- volatilization-neutralization (AVR), which recovers the cyanide from a gas and produces a low–cyanide content solution. This low–cyanide content solution can be recycled to the process or might require additional treatment before being disposed from the operation."

Norway is a big producer of ferrosilicon and silicon metal. The raw material is quartz and quartzite and large quantities from both Norwegian and foreign sources are used. The demands maade on both the chemical purity and the thermomechanical qualities of the quartz/quartzite have increased in recent years in an attempt to reduce energy consumption and to improve utilization. Control of the chemical quality of the raw material is relatively easy by means of routine analysis, but it is more difficult to find a suitable method for testing the thermomechanical properties. A rapid test method to define high quality quartzite deposits for use in the metallurgical industry has been developed. The method is based on a combination of chemical analysis, dilatometry, thermosonimetry and cathodoluminiscence.

MARTA, The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, is building a 53 mile heavy rail transit system to serve the City of Atlanta. Phase A of the Rail System, consisting of approximately 14 miles of at-grade, aerial and subway construction is underway. Metropolitan Atlanta lies in the Piedmont Geologic province of Georgia and is underlain by rocks of essentially granitic and gneissic nature. The soils encountered are primarily silty sands which are in-place weathering products of the parent rock and exhibit their relic structure. In general, these materials have presented no unique construction problems other than those created-by proximity of manmade structures, local availability of ground water, and top of rock elevation. The subway sections of primary interest in this paper consist of hardrock and soft ground tunnels and extensive cut-and-cover sections. The cut-and-cover construction includes excavations as deep as 80 feet. Temporary support systems in these deep excavations consist of soldier pile-timber-lagging or soldier pile-tremie concrete (SPTC) walls with internal bracing or tiebacks. In shallow cut-and-cover sections, where right-of-way economics permitted, slopes were laid back partially or fully to reduce or eliminate the need for bracing systems. The vast coal resources of North Slope, Alaska can be expected to attract substantial interest because the nearly flat lying coal beds of the coastal plan are specially amenable to surface mining. Mining on a scale large enough to justify coal development in this area could have severe environmental effects. The mitigation would be uncertain because large scale coal mining and reclamation operations have not been carried out in the arctic The deficiency of the scientific data base is another factor that requires consideration if coal mining has to develop in accordance with the objectives of PL 95-87. The objective of this paper is to establish the interrelationship between the problems due to permafrost and factors in reclamation of post mining land in order to find ways to transform nature in a rational and purposeful manner and to suggest specific reclamation approaches that may be appropriate in this region.

The modern economic geologist in Canada is well equipped to apply geological, geochemical or geophysical techniques in the exploration for ore. Recently, great advances have been made in geophysics and geochemistry, and a large number of new orebodies have been discovered by these methods. An attempt is made in this paper to show that there has also been a considerable advancement in geological knowledge and that the most effective application of geophysics and geochemistry often occurs in areas already considered geologically favourable for the occurrence of ore. Ali exploration methods sooner or later suffer from diminishing returns. Therefore, as time goes on, one can expect to see the application of some of the more subtle or refined geological techniques that are presently being developed.

Anglo American’s Los Bronces copper mine in Chile has been conducting detailed assessments investigating value adding options for their asset. The mine has conducted several detailed Mine-to- Mill and Grade Engineering studies to investigate increased throughput and head grade and to quantifying the impact of these approaches across the life of mine. CRC ORE has two key technologies namely Grade Engineering and the Integrated Extraction Simulator. These two technology suites have been combined to understand the technological landscape and associated value drivers suitable for application at Los Bronces. Detailed ore characterisation test work was conducted to:  measure and spatially model the propensity of ores to naturally deport and  develop customised blast models for Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering evaluation The outputs of this work were utilised to develop a block model populated with a range on new Grade Engineering and blasting parameters suitable for scenario analysis. To facilitate scenario analysis a high-fidelity value chain model of the Los Bronces operation from blasting to concentrate production was built in IES. IES was combined with sophisticated analytical tools such as Neural Networks to develop and reconcile a fully integrated value chain. The value chain model made it possible to simulate in IES all available blocks in the block model to predict throughput and grade changes for different strategic scenarios. The scenario analysis was run across 24 strategic combinations of Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering and comprised several million simulations. The scenarios investigated each technology independently and jointly to provide an attributed block model that can feed forward into technoeconomic modelling to determine optimal execution strategies for the mine. This paper presents the first published study combining Grade Engineering and IES to provide mass simulation capability to investigate strategic options for a mining asset.

The first bulletin (245)3 in this series, which appeared in 1932, summarized the entropy values then available for the elements and inorganic compounds, results being listed for some 150 substances. In the interim advances in the realms of spectroscopy applicable to the determination of thermodynamic properties and in the development of methods of calculation therefrom have added many highly accurate values. Moreover, through the efforts of Prof. W. M. Latimer (286) and his coworkers, satisfactory entropy values are now available for all but a few of the common inorganic ions in aqueous solution. At the same time rapid progress has continued in the study of low-temperature heat capacities in several laboratories, In addition, compilation and correlation of data pertaining to vapor pressures (247), thermodynamic properties of carbonates (258), thermodynamic properties of sulfur and its inorganic compounds (250), and the thermodynamic properties of metal carbides and nitrides (251), which were published as members of this series, have yielded many values. As a result, over 500 usable entropy values for inorganic substances may now be tabulated. This bulletin originally was planned as a second revision of the first member of this series, the first revision (249) having appeared in 1936; however, because of requests for the explanatory section of the first bulletin from those teaching thermodynamics, it was decided to com¬bine the information in the first bulletin and its revision with the data that have appeared since 1935 and to repeat the explanatory material in somewhat more detail. The purpose of this bulletin is therefore to give the available values of the entropies at 298.1° K. of the elements and inorganic compounds, together with enough explanation of the methods employed in calculating entropies to make the results comprehensible.

Introduction The refining of precipitate is the final stage of all the processes involved in gold mining and cyanide milling, by which the precious metal is at last obtained in a concentrated form, which can be accurately valued and marketed. Possibly one ought to say, conveniently shipped, for accuracy in valuation depends in many instances on a toughening treatment given the bars as received at the Mint so as to obtain a homogeneous metal that lends itself to representative sampling; which, of course, entails a surcharge on the regular Mint charges for the extra work necessarily undertaken. There are several methods of refining zinc-gold precipitate, each with its advocates; the method employed depending not always on the quality of the bullion produced but on the local exigencies of the case in point. These methods are more or less detailed in various textbooks and it is not the purpose of this paper to discuss them, but to confine ourselves to the specific case as stated in the title of the paper. At the outset, it behooves the writer to express his thanks to Mr. Brigham, the General Manager of the Hollinger Mines, for the kindly consideration and encouragement given in developing this process. This will be better understood when one considers the immense values involved, tending towards conservatism in practice, and making one chary of radical innovations. This process has been in satisfactory operation now for about two and-a half years, during which time over twenty-five million dollars value in fine gold has been produced, so that it may be reasonably held that the process is successful.

As several books and periodicals give details of the problems in cutting and polishing, this report will not duplicate their information more than necessary. In a typical open cast mining operation, investigation of how existing truck performance compares with the highest achievable truck performance is largely neglected. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a computerised system that will provide a systematic method for comparing existing truck operational performance to the highest performance considered achievable. Through analyses of existing versus achievable performances, various inefficiencies associated with truck operations can be identified. These inefficiencies could occur due to machine configurations, haul route design and conditions or operator skill level. Remedial action should then be taken in a timely fashion to better manage these factors and to ensure the fleet is always operating at its peak efficiency.

INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties because it doesn't have the financial resources to pay for the development costs from its own funds and doesn't have the financial strength which will enable it to borrow the money needed for development. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a financing can be arranged for the small mining company. This paper is an attempt to describe the fundamental steps on how such financing can be obtained --in other words--what is required to provide ad- equate capital at a low cost for developing and bringing a mining property into production. Innovative financing follows from this. The basic keys for building and maintaining a successful mining company are "the four M's": Management, Market, Mine, and Money. The writer believes their order of importance is as presented and each is a building block required in order to obtain the type of financing that best suits the borrower and lender. MANAGEMENT Management must be experienced, highly organized, realistic, able to take advantage of opportunities and fulfill promises. Mine financing requires a variety of skills and concentration on the part of management. Management should have a thorough understanding derived from experience in geology, construction, mining and metallurgy and environment, marketing, and financial matters. Management must realistically visualize what will be produced at what cost and truly evaluate the risks associated so the proper security can be correctly designed. Since risk cannot be eliminated, the objective of management is to identify the risk which will be present in a given venture and assess the level of that risk which will be acceptable to the firm. Generally the risk which is present is subject to little or no modification. After management identifies and measures the acceptable risk the firm will proceed in a way that it will be least exposed. Management must determine its long-term objectives and strategies within the context of a constantly changing world. This question must be addressed before examining the sorts of risk which affect the development and operation of a specific property. The compilation and interpretation of "hard data" by competent people is good to a point but the experience and instinct of seasoned individuals are the important factors in management choosing a long-term direction for the corporation. The attitude towards risk greatly affects the goals of the corporation. Major risks in a mining project can be placed in four categories: 1. Market - Price, demand, substitution. 2. Costs - Capital, operating, financial. 3. Regulation. 4. Taxation. The feasibility study for a project is the fundamental tool used in the management of risk. Management should employ an experienced team with an established and well-understood set of ground rules for the preparation and assembly of a feasibility study. The necessary degree of realism is built into all levels of the study and if the project is technically feasible, the company's hurdle rate is then used to discount the base-case project cash flow in order to determine its financial viability. Understanding the geological significance of the mineral deposit is critical. There should be strong interplay among the pure regional geologist, the detailed mine geologist, the mining engineer, and the metallurgical engineer. The collaboration among these different disciplines will yield a feasibility study that is more reliable. The essence of this work must be appreciated and understood by the executives planning the financing. It is vital that they thoroughly understand the risks and make the proper risk assessments to cope with our rapidly changing market environment. Projecting future revenue values is paramount and is subject to much estimation. One way to mitigate fluctuations and the risk of falling prices is by selling production for future delivery. MARKET Since mining is a worldwide industry it is mandatory that bankers be aware of what is occurring in the marketplace, both foreign and domestic. "In order to extend the application of fused salts in\the electrowinning and electrorefining of metals, it is necessary to maximise the current density, minimise the voltage drop and greatly increase the area of electrode surface so as to compete with the space-time yield of pyrometallurgical reactions. The various designs of electrowinning cell are reviewed and it is shown that by the application of a modest centrifugal field it is possible to reduce the anode to cathode interelectrode spacing to 4 mm whilst still maintaining a current efficiency of 85-90%.The thermodynamic potential for electrorefining is far less than for electrowinning yet fused salt electrorefining is only applied in limited cases. The reasons for this are discussed and the important design parameters evaluated. It is concluded that by using packed bed electrodes, separated by a diaphragm, the possibility of electrorefining with very low energy consumption can be achieved. Carbothermically-produced metals are always cheaper than those produced by electrolysis but suffer from the disadvantage of low purity. It is proposed that fused salt electrorefining may offer an energy efficient way of upgrading the metal. IntroductionThe majority of metals can be deposited from fused salts (1,2) but as commercial production is restricted to the more reactive elements, it is worthwhile considering the advantages and disadvantages of fused salt electrolysis as' compared to smelting and aqueous electrolysis. The advantages over aqueous extraction are as follows:1) the much higher conductivities and diffusivities result in much lower IR losses and higher current densities can be achieved at modest voltages;2) the elevated temperatures of operation result in larger exchange currents which give rapid kinetics and lower activation polarisation for the electrode reactions;3) the absence of water as a solvent means that it is not necessary to consider the evolution of hydrogen as a competing cathodic reaction. Furthermore, alkali halide salts, often used as solvents in fused salt electrolytes, have high deposition potentials;4) molten salts generally are mutually soluble and, therefore, concentration polarisation effects are minimised."

The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) is a method for designing, implementing, and evaluating? performance improvement strategies for machine operators and other mining personnel. The WCPM offers a practical approach for measuring job proficiency and identifying costly behaviors. It enables interventions aimed at performance improvement, especially training, to be assessed monetarily. Two interrelated elements of the WCPM are emphasized: observational techniques for establishing performance baselines and measuring performance outcomes and cost linkages between job competencies and measures related to profitability. Inter-and intra-subject differences in performance-related behaviors of regular and incidental shuttle car operators were detected during field validation of the WCPM. Downtime data were used as outcome measures to test linkages between performance error rates and cost consequences. Use of a simulation program for analyzing continuous mining face operations showed how common shuttle car operating parameters (e.g., payload, tram rate) can be used as cost-conscious indicators of performance variability and therefore as targets for performance improvement.

First year mining engineering students are introduced to computers, e-communication, using the UniversityÆs web based information system, and web based subject delivery. Mining engineering students in the mid-years of the course use programming languages and numerical computation software such as MATLAB, while students in the final years use a range of commercially available professional engineering software such as TALPAC. Most of these subjects are offered as part of the UniversityÆs Learning Online program, co-ordinated by its Centre for Educational Development and Interactive Resources (CEDIR). Learning Online subjects are delivered using the Web Course Tools (WebCT) environment. WebCT allows all resources to be accessed through the web, allows email communication between lecturer and student, and allows discussion groups for the exchange of ideas. Students can submit their assignments through WebCT and receive immediate feedback. This paper describes how WebCT has been used to deliver a first year engineering computing subject, mid-year numerical computation subjects, a mining economics subject and mine planning subjects.
