THIS paper is intended, in the light of recent investigations, to call attention to some of the essential features of good practice in sampling and mine-valuation. Mine-sampling may be divided broadly into two classes : (1) development-sampling and computation of ore-reserves; and, (2) stope-sampling and estimation of stope-values. DEVELOPMENT-SAMPLING. It is with development-sampling only that this paper deals-the term development being taken to mean the opening-up of a mine by cross-cuts, drives, connections, etc., preparatory to actual extraction of the ore for milling. In development-sampling the work of the sampler and the consequent estimation of the probable value of the mine or portions of the mine, as the case may be, cannot be verified until a later period, when the ground thus sampled has been exploited; hence, extreme care and accuracy are essential. Moreover, the development-sampler has to foresee and allow for contingencies which may arise when stoping is started. It follows that the sampling, in development-work, demands familiarity with the conditions likely to be encountered later in actual mining. In stopes, on the other hand, sampling is clone under actual working-conditions, and the sampler's valuations are immediately checked by the gold-output, or in some cases by a second sampling of the broken ore. A stope-sampler therefore need not be an experienced miner, though he should possess sound technical training and work accurately. Should he be somewhat inexperienced, be soon has his errors discovered for him, and learns to avoid them. There is much ongoing work in research and development of new processes for the recovery and recycling of met.a.ls and other materials from various waste and scrap streams. Commercialization of such new technologies requires the bringing together and successful execution of a considerable effort involving a variety of activities. These include process conceptualization, research and development, detailed design and construction, and then plant startup and operation. Processes evolve through all of these steps by engineering due diligence, making objective and critical analyses of results, and troubleshooting processing steps to, hopefully, arrive at a sequence that has the best chance to succeed operationally and economically. After a summary review of the above steps, several processes will be described in more detail that provide mostly successful examples of the above procedures. Finally, some observations will be made on areas that will become critical in the near future to the success of new processes for wastes and residues.

Introductory Feldspar is one of the most important mineral products consumed by the various branches of the ceramic industry. In the manufacture of table ware, electric porcelain, floor tile, and enamels, it supplies the chief fluxing ingredients necessary to bond the other more or less inert materials together when moulded into desired shape and fired in a kiln. Feldspar is used in the manufacture of bottle glass as a means of introducing alumina in a form easily assimilated. It is also used in certain scouring soaps particularly designed for cleaning enamel and glass surfaces. Feldspar, as it finds its way to the trade, is not a single mineral but is rather a mixture of various proportions of the feldspar silicate series, either in natural intergrowth or blended in the milling process, to produce a desired result. It is often further modified by the presence of quartz in amounts up to 30 per cent. The table on the next page gives typical commercial analyses of feldspar from various sources. Canadian feldspar produced to date has consisted mainly of the high-potash, relatively low-soda, variety, and has enjoyed a good market in the United States for the manufacture of enamels, electric porcelain, and vitrified table-ware. About eighty per cent of the output has been exported to the United States, but, with increased milling facilities in Canada and changes taking place in domestic United States sources of supply, the proportion exported will be reduced next year.

The new law on Environmental Protection and Management (Republic of Indonesia Law 32 of 2009) was passed by the Indonesian parliament in September 2009. This law aims to protect Indonesia's rapidly degrading environment by providing tougher provisions for both polluters and law enforcers. In doing so, the law introduces a number of new constraints and potential business risks that will affect all companies in Indonesia, particularly mining companies. Some of the newly introduced concepts follow.   Mining companies will now require an environmental license, issued by the Minister of Environment or local counterparts. This license is a prerequisite for all other business and operational permits. The Minister can revoke the environmental license at any time in case of an environmental incident or dispute. Mining companies may be exposed to additional environmental taxes and bonds besides already existing reclamation and mine closure bonds.   There is an increased risk of environmental lawsuits, due to more stringent controls on one side and greater protection for NGOs on the other side who make claims, false or true, against the company. Company executives and managers can be sued and they will be held accountable if environmental degradation has indeed occurred due to the company's activities.   Companies may face increased liabilities due to a change in the definition of contamination. The new definition is more stringent (and on occasion may prove too stringent to be practical); it also provides little room for flexibility in its application.   As implementing regulations are prepared over the coming two to three years, mining companies will need to adjust to the new law. A proactive approach is needed to minimise risk. Recommended actions include: upgrading existing environmental impact assessments to a higher standard; conducting baseline studies and thoroughly documenting environmental conditions on a regular basis; closely tracking regulatory changes, especially the forthcoming implementing regulations on the new environmental law; and regularly engaging key government and community stakeholders on environmental issues.

Goldex Mine is an underground mine located near the town of Val-d’Or. Multiple innovations were required to work the mine. Due to its low grade, it was important to develop a bulk mining method to economically extract the ore. The method used is a combination between shrinkage stope and long holes stope methods. This modified method is more than adequate; however, all of the ore body must be liberated in a very short period of time. Therefore, to bring down 23.0 M tonne (25.3 M ton) of ore, large blasts up to 1.8 M tonne (2.0 M ton) are required. The situation is also complicated by the fact that the mine is located in a residential area. No less that 40 homes are built within a 1 km (0.62 mile) radius of the mine site.

"Mana/ta Coal Ltd. 's Costello Mine, located seven kilometres east of Estevan, Saskatchewan, has been operating at the present location since 1960. During the past twenty-three years, annual production of lignite coal has averaged 590 000 tonnes. The coal is used for power generation and for industrial and domestic use. Markets, operating techniques, facilities in place and reclamation are discussed. Introduction The Costello Mine (formerly the Klimax Mine) is located in southeastern Saskatchewan, approximately 210 kilometres southeast of Regina and 5 kilometres from the United States' border, as shown in Figure 1. The present mine, 7 kilometres east of the city of Estevan, has been operating since 1960. The history, however, of the Costello Mine and of the Estevan Coalfield dates from the initial settling of the area in the 1880s. Mining initially consisted of burrowing into the side of the Souris River Valley or other hillsides where the coal seam was exposed. Eventually, slopes were put down in the Estevan/Bienfait area and vigorous underground activity existed. In the late 1920s surface strip mining was introduced. The use of strip mining progressed to the point where it completely replaced underground mining in the 1950s and it is the only method in use today. During the past 23 years annual production has averaged 590 000 tonnes. The lowest production was in 1960 when the mine was starting up at 167 000 tonnes and the highest production was in 1977 when production was 1 509 000 tonnes. The Costello Mine controls approximately 11 400 hectares of mineral rights in the Estevan area. This is made up of 4 900 hectares of freehold coal and 6 500 hectares of leases. The area forms a large, irregular shaped configuration. Most holdings are contiguous and adjacent. The mine also owns some 8 400 hectares of surface rights. The lands under the Costello Mine's surface rights control, which are not being used in the mining operation, are leased to local farmers and ranchers. This ensures that the land is used to its full potential, both before and after mining."

"In coal and mineral processing, several numeric parameters are used to quantify the separation performance of unit operations. For density-based separations, the partition curve is used as the starting point for many stages of diagnostic analyses. The curve is often quantified by its midpoint slope sharpness, and this single value is subsequently used for technical evaluation, benchmarking, and comparison. While this analytical approach does depict misplacement by relative density class, it inherently prioritizes middling separation and does not consider process economics or the micro-price value of individual classes. Alternatively, the organic efficiency parameter does consider process economics; however, it does not reveal information on the root cause of lost revenue or misplacement. In this paper, a new analytical approach is introduced which reconciles the technical misplacement data derived from the partition curve with the economic data derived from micro-pricing. The result is a new analytical procedure which reflects a better use of performance data. INTRODUCTION Partition curves are commonly used in the characterization, evaluation, and simulation of various physical separators. In mineral processing, partition curve analysis is routinely applied to hydrocyclones, screens, and density separators. Graphically, the partition curve depicts the recovery of particles as a function of a physical property on which the separation is based (e.g. particle density, size, magnetic susceptibility, etc.). Given the probabilistic nature of many real separators, the partition curve often exhibits a characteristic “S” shape (Fig. 1), similar to a cumulative normal distribution. Other geometric features of the curve are also depicted in Fig. 1, including the high and low closeout (or bypass) values, the midpoint slope, and the separation cut point (property value with 50% recovery). Partition curve analysis was originally proposed to evaluate coal washability (Tromp, 1937). Given the limited computational resources at the time, the analytical methods relied heavily on graphical construction and interpretation of the curve. Owing to the simplicity of the calculation and interpretation, many of these graphical approaches are still widely used for performance analysis today. The most common calculations are based on the slope of the partition curve at the midpoint. Increased slopes correspond to enhanced separation performance, since a perfect separation exhibits a stepwise transition from 0 to 1 at the desired cut point (i.e. an infinitely large slope). One common formulation of this slope, the Ecart Probable (Ep), is derived by evaluating the slope between the 25% and 75% recovery points:"

"The directional solidification of complex advanced gas turbine airfoils must be carried out without the nucleation of undesirable grains and with minimal shrinkage. Such problems are typically eliminated by using a number of mold design and process iterations. A more efficient approach is envisioned where a solidification model is generated and utilized to accelerate process development. Towards this end, the directional solidification (DS) of simple geometrical shapes in a crystal grower apparatus has been simulated with MARC finite element nonlinear thermal analyses.The finite element models of cylindrical (2D) and rectangular (3D) cross-section bars in the DS environment are presented. Temperature dependent properties, the impact of latent heat of fusion and a time-dependent radiation boundary condition constitute the more salient features of the MARC models. Solidification zone thermal behavior is predicted during the withdrawal transient for the specific case of nickel based superalloys grown in ceramic shell molds. Comparisons of analytical results with experiments demonstrate notable prediction accuracy. INTRODUCTIONSingle crystal and uni-directional crystal turbine blades require tightly controlled conditions if metallurgically and mechanically acceptable parts are to be produced. Gated blade geometry and process parameters must be precisely determined if incorrect grain structure, orientation and shrinkage are to be avoided. Since purely experimental development programs designed to evaluate these parameters can be excessively costly and time-consuming, an effort combining engineering analysis and verification by experiment has been initiated at Pratt & Whitney. Comparison of analytical predictions and measured data for geometries simpler than a turbine blade, namely cylindrical and rectangular bars, comprised the initial stage of this effort. Subsequent tasks involve modeling geometries of increasing complexity and ultimately the simulation of the directional solidification of the turbine blade, shown schematically in Figure 1. This paper summarizes the results of the initial stage of the effort."

In the pursuit of increased safety the mining industry has worked to develop systems for remote control and autonomous operation of both stationary and mobile equipment. This paper reports on a newly developed system for teleoperation and autonomous tramming of LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) mining vehicles that not only increases the safety of the operators, but also has the potential to increase productivity.

The Island of Ceylon, which is one of the most beautiful possessions of the British Empire, has been an abode of man from the very earliest times. The Veddhas, a wild tribe of some 4500 people still living in the fastnesses of the jungle in east central portion of the island, are believed to represent a remnant of the oldest inhabitants of which we have any actual knowledge, but in the caves in which they live there are found the stone axes and other implements of Palaeolithic people who represent the first race of men who inhabited our globe, and of whom they may be, for all that is known, the direct descendants. About the fifth century before Christ there came the Aryan invaders, apparently from the north of India, who drove the Veddhas into the remote fastnesses of the jungle and developed the remarkable Singhalese civilization whose high character is demonstrated by the remarkable and very extensive system of irrigation works which they built up, and through which they made the island wonderfully productive. Great cities arose, some of which are believed to have had a population of over a million souls and whose temples and public buildings show that the people were accomplished architects and sculptors.

Amongst those whose task it is to design tumbling mills and other comminution machines there is an almost religious divide between devotees of the Bond method and devotees of other methods developed in more recent times. For a decade or so the issue was between the Bond power-based methods and the JKMRC (JK) simulation based approach. The newest method to challenge the status quo is power-based and was developed by Steve Morrell. As the title suggests, this paper will take some liberty at concluding that Fred Bond and Steve Morrell may be separated by history, but not by their approaches to their individual contributions to the science of comminution. Another driver for the paper is that although it is good to have diversity of thought, the existing divisions are problematic for those of us signing public disclosure documents. If alternative design methods produce materially different outcomes for the mill duty, then at least one of them is wrong or being used incorrectly. At some point the unsustainable argument may need to be put in a court of law that we metallurgists have two or more materially different design methods, each of which is correct! Therefore, perhaps a resolution is needed before this occurs?The works of both Fred Bond and Steve Morrell are each directly related to their contemporary grinding mill design and operational environments. Both their approaches are empirical, borne of observing and measuring real world situations. Both worked with theories that preceded them, gathered their own data and then each saw shortfalls in the status quo.Fred Bond was an escapee from revolution, a victim of The Great Depression, and had several near death experiences during his early site-based career. Perhaps he was fortuitously rescued from himself when asked by Allis Chalmers (A-C) to set up its rock testing laboratory in Milwaukie in 1930. Fred’s testing led him to conclude that neither the Kick nor the Von Rittinger theories explained his measurements. His writings on the failings of these old theories caused a divide between devotees of the old and new methods at that time. After many years, and much thought and plotting of data (the old way!), he came up with his now-famous equations (and his Third Theory) which have stood the test of time, certainly in the world of Bond-era machines.Coming from England via several African diamond mines, Steve Morrell immersed himself into the comminution world of the JK in Brisbane about a decade after Fred passed on. The JK had developed its semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) simulation framework using its own pendulum breakage tester, itself a derivative of the twin pendulum impact device invented by Bond decades earlier. At the JK Steve developed his authoritative Tumbling Mill Power equations and was involved in real world analysis of comminution problems on the global stage. Steve’s JK experience coincided with the demise of the rod mill, the rise of autogenous grinding (AG) and SAG milling and a rapid expansion in concentrator capacity.Morrell left the JK to pursue his own interests, which included ongoing consulting work, now demanded by the comminution world. He then turned to investigating a growing list of discrepancies between the opinions of designers and theoreticians, and the factual outcomes. The Morrell Method of design arose from this re-examination of ore testing, real world operating data and these glaring and expensive discrepancies between design and outcome. The effects of a cross-hatched grooved mold surface topography, casting speed, and superheat on the morphology of solidifying shells of aluminum alloy 3003 have been characterized by a series of immersion tests. The cross-hatched grooves were 0.232 mm deep with wavelength or spacing between 1 mm and 15 mm. The shells solidified at casting speed of less than 10 mm/s on the 1 mm spaced cross-hatched grooved mold surface were fairly uniform with little or no localized variations in thickness. However, the propensity for non-uniform shell growth morphology was exacerbated by an increase in casting speed, melt superheat, and the wavelength of the cross-hatched grooves. This is provisionally attributed to their effects on interfacial heat transfer and wetting of the mold surface by the molten metal.

"This paper is the sequel to that on Developments in Sintering Efficiency delivered by Davies and Mitchell at the International Ore Dressing Congress, Stockholm, 1957. Attention is drawn to the fundamental concept of sintering as a heat transfer process, in which the ignition heat is continually transferred onward through the bed as a heat wave. By its passage, this heat initiates endothermic 'changes, such as carbonate decomposition, whose energy requirements are supplied by the combustion of the fuel contained in the bed.Ideally, the heat wave should be generated by the ignition hood followed by the pre-heating of the incoming air. The fuel content of the bed should be no more than the theoretical quantity needed to balance the endothermic changes. In practice, the heat wave is seriously short of energy and this is offset by excess fuel in the bed. As a result, sinter quality suffers, more return .fines are produced, and fuel is wasted, a loss of efficiency which could be avoided if the fundamentals of correct ignition were more widely appreciated.Sintering speed, otherwise heat wave velocity, is a function of the rate at which the incoming air acquires .heat from the cooling sinter and imparts it to the unburned feed below the combustion zone. It is thus a function of rate of air flow and so depends on bed permeability>. Ways of• improving and maintaining permeability at the maximum consistent with thorough sintering are discussed, particular reference being made to taconite concentrates. The possibilities of recrystallizing refractory ores into forms more amenable to physical concentration techniques by sintering are visualised, very little expenditure on heat energy being required when the process is operated near the ideal conditions."

Diaphragm wall technique is usually used to construct structural elements in the ground, commonly used for retention systems, permanent foundation elements or deep ground-water barriers, named Cut-Off-Walls (COW). It can be anticipated that global urbanization and increasing demands on environmental considerations will need to be accommodated in underground space in the future. These trends show an increasing requirement for diaphragm walling in even more complex conditions, especially in inner-city applications with limited space. Therefore, there is the demand to minimize the size of equipment to accommodate such projects. Following this demand, a new trench cutter system, the so-called CUBE System, was recently developed. The complete trench cutter system has been fit into container size dimensions so that it can work in very limited space conditions. In addition, complex conditions in terms of space limitations require specifically adapted solutions for slurry, spoil, reinforcement and concrete handling and the related logistics to ensure smooth production. Due to the limited space requirements, the impact on the surrounding environment is limited. As the system is electric driven, an additional reduction of carbon footprint can be expected. First tests of the system have been carried out and the results will be shared. The paper will explain the construction process and the specific challenges and experiences made for these extreme conditions.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the effects of two iron-based fuel additives on diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions. The 5.6-L, six-cylinder test engine is typical of engines used in underground mines. One additive, ferrous picrate, did not measurably affect exhaust emissions. This report is mainly about a ferrocene-based additive that reduced DPM between 4 and 45 pet., depending on engine operating conditions. The report concludes that the DPM reductions were caused by the catalytic oxidation properties of a ferric oxide coating that developed inside the engine's combustion chamber. The ferric oxide coating also decreased gas-phase hydrocarbons and O2, but it increased CO2 and NOx, The increase in NOx, of about 12 pet, is considered the only adverse effect of the ferrocene-based fuel additive. The results suggest that the effectiveness of ferrocene was partially offset by increased sulfates because of the high-sulfur fuel used. Recommendations for continuing fuel additive research are presented.

IN the recently published book entitled "Man in a Chemical World," by A. Cressy Morrison, the several pages discussing explosives were included in the chapter on "Serving Industry." Such a classification is entirely correct, as blasting explosives function only as a tool for accomplishing certain useful work, a tool which is completely destroyed in one use. Explosives are so important to industry and to modern society, in fact, that it seems impossible to imagine the existence of civilized nations without access to commercial explosives as ready servants. Two main types of explosives are now in use, the low-velocity or deflagrating type, such as black powder, which is adapted for use in coal mining and other applications where a slow, heaving effect is desired, and high explosives of the dynamite type,

"Mixing phenomena in a bottom blown air-stirred one-seventh water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm) reactor was studie9-using three different configurations of straight circular nozzles fitted axially at the bottom of the vessel. The mixing time has been determined by pH measurements at various gas flow rates, bath heights and nozzle orientations in the presence and in the absence of a second phase.Experimental results reveal that the mixing time decreases with increasing gas flow rate. For a given gas flow rate the mixing time increases non-linearly with increasing bath height. Off-center configuration gives slightly lower mixing times as compared to center configuration. It is found that the contribution of buoyancy to the total stirring energy density is very small, but its contribution increases with increasing bath height. In the presence of an upper oil layer, the mixing time increases significantly for all configurations.IntroductionIn high temperature metallurgical melts mixing is carried out by injection of a gas either from top or bottom of the vessel in order to accelerate the rates of chemical reactions and to promote bath homogenization. When a gas is injected into a liquid through a submerged lance, porous plug or nozzle, the gas, rising as a two phase plume to the surface, imparts momentum to the surrounding liquid and causes gross circulation in the bath which promotes mixing."

The increasing demand for rare earth elements (REE) in highly strategic sectors such as hybrid electric vehicles, renewable energy, communication technologies, and the defense industry has made REE production methods important. In recent years, studies on REE have increased rapidly; however there are many studies on REE, there are not enough studies in the literature on the economics of the beneficiation process. RE ores are generally leached after beneficiation by gravity, magnetic and flotation methods. In this study, direct leaching, attrition scrubbing and leaching, and flotation and leaching methods are evaluated economically based on the data for the Mountain Pass (MP) facility. According to the sensitivity analysis performed as a function of capital cost (CAPEX), operating cost (OPEX), and rare earths oxides (REO) recovery, REO recovery has the biggest effect on the process economies. Although the flotation method entails additional investment and operating costs, transportation and operating costs are significantly reduced result of the higher grade and recovery. The flotation method is more profitable, with larger NPV and IRR values and a shorter payback period.

China?s remarkable levels of economic growth during the past three decades have lifted almost 300 million people out of poverty. This amazing achievement has placed an increasing demand on energy and minerals, especially coal, which supplies 68.7 percent of China?s energy (June 2011). It is estimated that China mined more than 3 Gt (3.3 billion st) of coal in 2010, three times as much when compared to merely 10 years earlier. Such an impressive achievement does not come without major costs ?? including concerns with mine safety and an increasing number of occupational illnesses due to fast growth. This article reports on one of the major safety concerns in China?s coal mining, dust and dust control practices, and known cases of caol worker?s pneumoconiosis affiliated with prolonged exposure to excessive coal dusts. The exact size of China?s mining industry is not known, but it is estimated the coal industry is at least five-million people strong, and the metal and nonmetals industry probably employs another three million people. To meet increasing energy demand, China mined more than 3.1 Gt (3.4 billion st) of coal in 2010 from its 15,000 plus coal operations1, most of which are small- to medium-sized operations with annual coal productions ranging from a few thousand tons to 300 kt (330,000 st). These small coal operations are typically in remote areas, inadequately engineered, poorly ventilated and still using rudimentary drilling and blasting mining methods employing antiquated mining equipment and, presenting safety concerns, i.e., methane and dust explosions.
