Classification system efficiency (CSE) is a simple, powerful metric that provides a comprehensive measure of classification system performance. CSE directly quantifies the amount of coarse solids in the mill, and as a result, also directly quantifies the percentage of mill power being used effectively. In this manner, it is an effective, practical grinding energy efficiency metric.Three independent variables drive CSE: circulating load ratio, sharpness of classification, and classifier bypass. Due to practical downstream constrains on per cent solids, improvements realised by increasing circulating load reach diminishing returns as sharpness of classification and bypass deteriorate in the most commonly used classification device, the hydrocyclone. This combination of effects leads to the use of CSE, and its relationship to operational economics, as an objective circuit optimisation criterion.Its simplicity in measurement makes CSE a useful tool for the plant metallurgist, and it is not subject to a great amount of experimental error. CSE provides the plant operator a fast, simple, and effective means to evaluate the performance of the plant classification system. Improvements in CSE relate directly to circuit throughput and energy efficiency. In this paper, the argument is put forth that the codes used for public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves have some significant limitations with regard to the information provided to investors on the short- to medium-term value of mining properties. Such limitations include a) failure to explicitly incorporate a time element and b) failure to state explicitly the quantity and quality of mineral product that will be produced for sale. A time-value framework for reporting mineral assets is proposed in order to overcome these limitations. The proposed system is based on two classification axes: a) an X-axis representing time in years during which the value of the asset is likely to be realized and b) a Y-axis representing the value identified by a mining or exploration company\u2019s activities. The potential benefits of this system are discussed, including the ability to incorporate factors, such as permitting and construction times, directly into the magnitude of the reported mineral assets. The proposed framework would assist in the standardization of mineral assets reporting in such a manner that they could eventually be more readily included in financial statements. Seabed polymetallic nodules, which contain significant quantities of metals key to electrification (nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese) can be processed using several different metallurgical processing options, including direct smelting and subsequent hydrometallurgical refining of the copper/nickel matte, ammoniacal leaching (gas reduction or Cuprion), and acid leaching (often reductive). Many of these approaches suffer from reduced cobalt extraction, difficult physical performance, or overall circuit complexity in general, leading to increased risk to the overall project. SGS has considered pressure acid leaching of nodules for further investigation, as publicly shared data on this processing route stems from the 1970s and 1980s and is not always easily accessible. This paper will detail the series of tests conducted and provide updated results obtained (high Ni/Co/Cu recovery with limited Mn/Fe), as well as comment on the potential treatment options on the product solution and residue.

Before the World War the use of zirconium and its compounds was largely experimental and confined almost wholly to Germany and Austria . Occasionally small lots of zirconium ore had been produced in the United States ( 1,000 pounds in 1869 , 26 tons in 1883 , and 3,000 pounds in 1903 ) and used (with monazite ) in the manufacture of various lighting devices , especially incandescent gas mantles ; but it was not until 1906 that the discovery of the natural zirconium oxide in large quantities near Sao Paulo , Brazil , first gave promise that a zirconium industry eventually might be developed . Edward Rietz , who worked the Brazilian deposits , interested German chemists in extending the use of zirconium , and by 1911 trade journals were listing German firms as manufacturers of compounds or products derived therefrom . For a time zirconia was one of the various oxides used in the Nernst lamp . It was used also for crucibles and hearths as refractory material ; in the manufacture of chemical utensils ; in enamels ; in the place of bismuth subnitrate for defining Röntgenray pictures of the stomach ; as a pigment ; in medicine ; and in a number of other ways . The Germans were credited also with producing a remarkable zirconium steel , which , it was claimed , was much superior to other alloy steels . During the World War the United States Government investigated the possibilities of zirconium , as well as those of other steel -hardening elements , and a large automobile manufacturer actually purchased a substantial quantity of ore with the purpose of employing zirconium in automobile steels . Immediately after the armistice the Government ceased its investigations ; but despite the difficulties experienced by various investigators in reaching concordant results , interest in the use of zirconium as a steel -hardening agent , as well as in other uses of the element and its compounds , continued . In 1918 the Foote Mineral Co. , which had been interested in zirconium for several years , was exploiting the deposit in Brazil formerly worked by the Germans and was supplying zirconia in the form of ore , brick , and cement for refractory and other purposes . About the same time the Electro Metallurgical Co. , which before the entrance of the United States into the war was experimenting with zirconium alloys , supplied in tonnage quantities the demand for these alloys . In 1919 it was reported that American manufacturers , after several years of research, were producing in commercial quantities pure zirconium oxide , which was finding a place in the manufacture of small refractory articles , scorifying dishes , crucibles , tubes , and one- piece furnace linings . In 1920 the lowering of the price of zirconium metal powder ( because of improved metallurgical methods ) promised the production of the metal on a semicommercial scale . In 1924 the Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. introduced a new opacifying agent , " Opax , " made from zircon . A year or two later some of the large pottery manufacturers became interested in the use of zirconium oxide as an opacifying agent , the increased production of titanium pigments having resulted in the production of zirconium as a by-product at a price that could compete with tin oxide . In 1928 it was reported that the industrial use of zirconium oxide was increasing steadily in the manufacture of brick , crucibles , and other refractory products , such as high- temperature cements . In view of the alarm expressed in many quarters over the increased production of copper to come from Canada and Africa in the future, it is of interest to study the history of the principal producing districts of the world and to attempt to forecast the future part to be played by them. Tables 1 and 2 record the world production and that of the United States, together with their respective rates of increase, both in percentage and actual amounts. The important point in this record is the decline in rates of increase for both the world and the United States, but more particularly in that of the latter, since 1881. The increase for the United States in the last decade is less than that for any decade since 1881, and is only 20 per cent of that for the decade 1911-20. The increase for the world is less than that for the two preceding decades, and is only about 65 per cent of the war decade 1911-20. Referring to Table 1, the decade 1871to1880 showed an increase of 32.l per cent in the world's production, which was the low until the last decade, ending 1930, which shows an increase of only 24.5 per cent. These decades both represent periods of economic stress following wars. In the first case the recovery was very sharp, the percentage increase in 1881-90 reaching a high of 86.4 per cent. It would seem dangerous, however, to assume that a similar high will be reached in the next ten years, because of the severity of the depression brought about by the Great War and the probability of its influence extending well into the next decade.

A production information management system (PIMS) was recently implemented at Queensland NickelÆs Yabulu Refinery. Although a strong business case was developed to justify the significant investment in PIMS some potential beneficiaries remained sceptical of the anticipated benefits. The decision to install PIMS was justified as the on-line availability of continuous production data enabled the optimisation of some crucial operations resulting in significant cost savings, improved throughput and final product quality. Furthermore the rapid access to extended historical data has allowed the cause of repeated failure of equipment to be determined. The investment is expected to pay for itself within two years and has already contributed towards significant savings. This paper focuses on some of the diverse production improvements gained and compares the anticipated benefits in the business case to those achieved. A brief outline of the phased implementation of the OSIsoft PI data historian and complementary client software at Yabulu is included, along with details of the lessons learned.

Belt conveyor systems, long the standard transportation technique in soft-rock open-pit applications, are encountering growing interest in the hard-rock open-pit sector as economic factors force companies to seek an alternative to costly truck haulage. A general review of mine conveyor systems is followed by detailed analysis of the mobile and semi-mobile in-pit crushing plant essential to successful use of mine conveyors. A final section presents case studies of three crusher-conveyor systems handling overburden, copper ore and granite.

"Underground operation ventilation energy requirements constitute a significant portion of mine energy consumption (40–50%) and total energy costs (25–40%). In general, mine ventilation systems are energy inefficient; the author has found several systems that operate at efficiencies below 65%. This paper presents how engineering design principles can improve the performance and efficiency of ventilation appliances, resulting in reduced power consumption and operating costs. Case studies demonstrate that, by retrofitting ventilation appliances using proper engineering concepts, systems will operate at efficiencies well above common operating efficiencies, resulting in a drastic reduction in costs and base electrical and energy loads.RÉSUMÉ Les besoins énergétiques nécessaires à l’aérage d’une exploitation souterraine représentent une part considérable de la consommation d’énergie d’une mine (de 40 à 50 %) ainsi que des coûts totaux liés à l’énergie (de 25 à 40 %). De manière générale, les systèmes d’aérage d’une mine sont loin d’être écoénergétiques ; l’auteur a trouvé plusieurs systèmes fonctionnant à des rendements inférieurs à 65 %. Cet article présente les principes de conception technique qui peuvent améliorer la performance et l’efficacité des systèmes d’aérage, entraînant une réduction de la consommation d’électricité et des coûts d’exploitation. Des études de cas montrent qu’en les rénovant à l’aide de concepts techniques adéquats, les systèmes d’aérage fonctionneront à des rendements bien supérieurs aux rendements habituels d’une exploitation. The triazine molecules have not been given much attention and they are potential collectors that may positively impact the mineral processing industry. The adsorption of triazine as collectors such as sodium 2,6-dithio-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTBAT) on pyrite form a basis in design of flotation collectors that may be applicable in a wide range of sulfide minerals. The SDTBAT collector was compared with the sodium normal butyl xanthate (SNBX) and sodium normal butyl dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC). All collectors were adsorbed in their neutral form containing sodium on the pyrite (100) surface. The computational calculations found that the adsorption energies followed the order: SDTBAT (-300.35 kJ/mol) > SNBX (-186.10 kJ/mol) > SNBDTC (-163.78 kJ/mol). It was observed that the SNBX and SNBDTC adsorbed through the S atoms, while the SDTBAT adsorbed through the S atoms and N atoms onto Fe atoms. It is clear that the SDTBAT had a strong binding energy which is attributed to the presence of the triazine group that is electron depositing to the active S atoms compared to the SNBX which possessed the oxygen that is electron withdrawing. Moreover, the SDTBAT collector was found to bind stronger than the xanthate. This was complimented by microflotation tests that showed fast floating and higher recoveries of pyrite when using the SDTBAT collector than the xanthate and DTC. This clearly demonstrated that the SDTBAT is a potential collector to replace the xanthate collector due to its high selectivity and flotation power.

This circular is part 3 of the third paper (entitled "Excavation") of a series summarizing the technical problem; involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes. Fart 2 discussed the use of power scrapers, slackline cableway excavators, and hydraulic monitors. This circular discusses the use of the hydraulic, clamshell, ladder, and dipper dredge. Part 4 to follow will discus the use of haulage equipment, and subsequent parts will discuss the application of both excavating and haulage equipment to various types of deposits. HYDRAULIC DREDGE Judged by the number of installations and the tonnage produced, as recorded in part 1 of this circular, the hydraulic or pump dredge is the most popular type of underwater sand and gravel excavator.

"All-in sustaining cost is a metric used by mining companies to reflect the cost of gold mining in a consistent format useful to both investors and mining professionals. Cost reporting focused on the direct cost of mining and processing ore was summarized in the non-GAAP cash cost developed by the Gold Institute in 1996. In 2013, a group of mining companies, working with the World Gold Council, developed a more inclusive approach to reporting costs designed to solve the dilemma of showing a more comprehensive reflection of recurring costs involved in producing gold, without discouraging investors. INTRODUCTION Mining today plays a key role in the development of our civilization as a source of essential raw material and provider of essential fuels, producer of jobs, and a factor in support of the international balance of monetary payment (Camm, 2014). Professionals in mining locate, develop, design and manage ore deposits in an environmentally safe and profitable manner. As mineral deposits become increasingly scarce, new challenges face the industry. A current trend is to an increased emphasis on underground mining techniques for deeper deposits. Operations are safer today than before as companies understand better their work environment and the importance of mining responsibly. A continual challenge for the industry is accurately reflecting the costs and selling price of ore. An enduring characteristic of mining is the situation where the market typically determines the price of a commodity; the main control a company has on the bottom line is to control the cost of production. An attempt to bring light and clarity on the cost of their business will give a better idea to investors on the true profitability of the mining business. Gold producers face this struggle to accurately reflect the cost of production while also seeking to attract the interest of the investment community (Hill, 2013). In order to have a consistent format to report on their production costs, leading gold producers through their alliance inside the World Gold Council (WGC), worked on the adoption of a new cost framework: the All-in Sustaining Cost (AISC) and All-in Cost (AIC). Since 1996, the traditional cash cost reporting has focused only on the mining and processing costs incurred in mining an ounce of gold, which included the costs of goods sold (labor, energy, and consumables costs) and royalties (Table 1). But cash cost reporting ignores many important aspects, like sustaining capital, general and administrative expenses, and site rehabilitation at the end of the mine life (Whelan, 2013). The cash cost was used to attract many investors into the business. In fact the high gross margin (sales minus cash costs) has been promoted the past decades by the industry instead of the net or operating margin. As a result, even when the gold price was high, nearly $1900 per ounce in August 2011, gold producers were not reporting excessive profits in their cash flow / income statements, to the disappointment and incomprehension of investors (Milstead, 2014). The truth was simply that the other costs omitted in the traditional cash cost were reducing the apparent profits."

THE large pyrites ore-bodies, the underground mining of which is to be described, are situated at Rio Tinto in the Province of Huelva in Southern Spain. The situation of the different ore-bodies with relation to one another is shown in Figure 1. It will be seen on the plan that the strike of the ore-bodies is approximately east and west. The geology of the district has been very fully described by Dr. D. Williams (1), so that for the purposes of this paper it will be sufficient to give briefly the salient features o each of the two larger ore-bodies which are being mined by underground methods at the present time. (a) San Dionisio.-This ore-body is the largest single deposit in Rio Tinto, having on its upper levels a length of 3,500 ft. On the upper levels the average width is approximately 200ft. but in places on the lower levels there is a width of 900ft. of un broken pyrites. Diamond-drill holes, without running out of ore, show the ore-body to persist to a depth of at least 1,600 ft. The ore-body in the upper part lies between slate and porphyry walls, but in depth is enclosed in porphyry walls. (b) South Lode.-Faulting is considered to be responsible for the break in the solid ore between South Lode and San Dionisio. On the upper levels, the South Lode ore-body has an unbroken length of 4,000 ft. The massive pyrites has a maximum width of 300ft. and an average of about 100 ft. Ore has been proved to a depth of 1,000 ft., at which depth the ore-body is much reduced both in length and breadth. This ore-body, to the depth at which it has been proved, lies entirely between slate and porphyry walls. The South Lode and the San Dionisio ore-bodies are mined both by open-cast and by underground methods. There is evidence that these mines have been exploited intermittently during the last 3,000 years; but, as is to be expected, no records are available of the tonnage mined prior to the time of purchase by the present company.

The stockpiling and reclaiming of bulk materials can be a challenging task for engineers seeking the optimum solution for plant needs, reliability, and at lowest unit cost. The objective of this paper will be to expose advantages, disadvantages and limitations of many storage and reclaiming systems to the responsible engineer and management. The paper will emphasize the practical aspect of stockpiling and reclaiming methods. Many valuable and interesting papers are available dealing with the theoretical viewpoint and application of a particular manufacturer's machine. Several of these are mentioned in the bibliography. As many practical parameters as possible will be given. After twenty years in the field of designing and selling bulk materials handling systems, the needs of the user and the plant are recognized and reasonably understood. This paper cannot give solutions to all problems In this vast field but will stress practical applications and examples of various installations. The evolution of advancements in materials handling is based upon not only technological innovations, but learning from many experiences of others and utilizing them as stepping stones to improved installations.

As part of the Ministry of the Environment's Resource Recovery Program, the Province of Ontario has constructed a $13 million "Experimental Plant for Resource Recovery" in Metropolitan Toronto. The technology and unit operations involved in the processing of municipal solid wastes at a rate of 40 tons per hour at this facility are reviewed. Shredding, air separation and classification, screening, magnetic separation and composting are some of the operations featured at this plant. Recoverable commodities expected include paper, ferrous metals, an air-classified light fraction (shredded paper and film plastic), glass and compost. Existing and potential markets for these materials are discussed.

The election of Donald Trump and the Brexit referendum herald a shift towards a tighter definition of economic value, at the expense of the broader value concept of sustainable development; as well as a rise of protectionism, reversing a long-term trend of globalisation. However, the situation is complex, especially over the longer term in which mine project development and exploration operates. The minerals sector should proceed with caution. A greater focus on the local impacts of mining may be strategically beneficial, not only to mitigate against a potential protectionist future, but also because sustainable development has become more ‘localist’ via the concept of ‘social licence to operate’, whilst globalisation also seems to provoke increased ‘localist’ sentiments (known as ‘glocalism’). Localist strategies, therefore, seem a good hedge against multiple political futures. By contrast, moving away from sustainable development appears strategically riskier. Not only are ‘unsustainable’ activities, such as pollution and civil rights infringements harder to reverse, but a movement towards a more sustainable global economy may already be predetermined, even if the journey there may seem oblique. The last issue included a discussion of recent indications of a 1983 recovery and a brief analysis of the contribution of the U.S. mining industry to the gross national product (GNP). In this issue we present sales and other data indicating the strength of the 1983 recovery and quantitatively analyze the structural shifts that have taken place in the U.S. economy and mining industry since 1972, and changes in electricity consumption by the mining industry. U.S. Economic Recovery The tentativeness in the February/March issue of Minerals and Materials regarding the strength and sustainability of the U.S. economic recovery can now be replaced with a note of increased confidence. Real growth of GNP on an annual basis in the first quarter of 1983 was 2.5 percent, compared with 1.4 percent predicted in the Economic Report of the President.1/ Preliminary second-quarter 1983 data provide further cause for optimism. Recently released data indicate that consumer spending is playing a key role in the recovery. Retail sales have increased significantly across a wide array of goods, especially consumer durables, where sales increased 4 percent from March to April (table J) and were 12 percent higher in April [ ] than the 1982 monthly average. Consumer durable sales were led by sales of building materials spurred by the growth in residential construction, motor vehicles and parts, and household durables, including appliances and furniture.

In the article results of experiments over jaws? linings in jaw crushers with different shaping of working surface were presented. Following sets of jaws were under investigation: immobile plain jaw and moving jaw with grooving surface. Grooving jaws have groves with circular, triangular and trapezoid cross section. In order to evaluate efficiency of comminution both the grain composition of product and the content of irregular grains were determined, as well as the size of crushing forces and process efficiency were measured. For the combination: plain jaw with grooved one, a good results were obtained as regards the grain composition of product and the content of irregular grains. Crushing forces were higher at crushing with mixed types of jaws (the one plain, the second grooved), in comparison to crushing with using both grooved jaws. Efficiency of the process was definitely higher for mixed jaws.

In the design of plants to separate helium from natural gas, it is necessary to estimate the enthalpies of the various streams at various positions in the process. This Bureau of Mines report surveys the various methods that have been used to determine enthalpies and gives information on the organizations with such capabilities. The minimum information required for developing an enthalpy diagram is presented, and the relative merits of the various methods are discussed. It is concluded that methods that require no mass flow rate or energy measurements are to be preferred.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE general drift of the discussion as to the relative merits of pressure- and exhaust-fans has resulted, if we may judge from the prevailing practice, largely in favor of the latter. The subject has been hitherto treated, however, with special reference to highly gaseous mines, the effect of the form of ventilation upon dust-explosions having been too little considered. Even in mines containing practically no gas, dust-explosions may occur; and if, as I believe, pressure-fans are to be preferred for their effect upon dust, it may be worth while to reopen the debate, and to challenge the advisability of exhaust-ventilation under certain conditions. There are several forms of colliery-ventilation, which may be described as follows: Plain or simple pressure-ventilation, in which the fan acts as a pressure-fan, and the movement of coal is unobstructed at the surface by doors or equivalent devices in drifts or shafts, the traveling and haulage thus being in the return-current. Plain exhaust-ventilation, in which the fan acts as an exhaust-fan, the movement of coal being likewise unobstructed at the surface, and the traveling and haulage being in the intake. Obstructed pressure-ventilation, in which the movement of coal is obstructed at the surface, in order that the traveling and haulage may be in the intake. Obstructed exhaust-ventilation, in which the movement of coal is obstructed at the surface, in order that the traveling and haulage may be in the return.
