Although salmonid fishes (including Pacific salmon and trout) have only intermediate sensitivity to copper (Cu) for traditional toxicity endpoints (survival, growth, and reproduction) and thus do not ?drive? the freshwater Cu criteria (e.g., see species-sensitivity ranking in US EPA 2007), Cu concentrations as low as 1 to 2 µg/L have been reported to impair olfaction (the sense of smell) in salmonids in laboratory experiments using dilute fresh water (see references in Meyer and Adams 2010 and DeForest et al. 2011). Olfaction is crucial to predator avoidance, recognition of kin, and reproductive synchronization (Baldwin et al. 2003); and Cu is of general ecotoxicological concern because it can be present in acid/mine rock drainage, industrial and municipal effluents, agricultural runoff, and urban stormwater runoff (Meyer et al. 2007). Therefore, there is public concern that the current regulation of Cu in surface waters is not stringent enough to protect salmonid fishes against olfactory impairment (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). Because the toxicity of metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry [e.g., acute toxicity of Cu generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ + Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase; Meyer et al. 2007], hardness-based freshwater criteria for metals are lower at lower water hardness. The recently-developed biotic ligand model (BLM) explicitly takes into account all four of those water chemistry parameters and the concentrations of other major inorganic cations (Na+, K+) and anions (Cl-, SO42-) to predict the acute toxicity of cationic metals (e.g., Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) to aquatic organisms; and the BLM has been adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to calculate acute and chronic national freshwater criteria for Cu (US EPA 2007). Consistent with observations of Cu toxicity to aquatic organisms, BLM-based Cu criteria generally are lower at lower pH, water hardness, alkalinity, and DOC concentrations. Therefore, although threshold concentrations for olfactory impairment by Cu can be low in dilute fresh waters, the corresponding hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria for the same waters also tend to be low. This leads to a logical question: Are Cu criteria already protective against impairment of olfaction in salmonid fishes, thus obviating the need to decrease those criteria even lower to protect against adverse effects to this physiological/ecotoxicological endpoint? Herein, we demonstrate that in all studies conducted to date, the US EPA?s BLM-based freshwater Cu criteria would have been protective against olfactory impairment in salmonid fishes, but the US EPA?s hardness-based criteria would not always have been protective. This distinction is important because all 50 States in the USA still use hardness-based Cu criteria in their water quality standards, and only some of the States allow use of the BLM to calculate site-specific Cu criteria. Additionally, in the absence of empirical results for calibration of a saltwater Cu-olfactory model, we demonstrate that a proposed unified freshwater-saltwater Cu-olfactory BLM predicts the US EPA?s current saltwater Cu criteria would be protective against olfactory impairment caused by Cu in sea water.

"Specialized numerical modeling codes have been developed over the years to estimate ground stresses during the excavation of coal in underground mines. One of these tools, MULSIM, a displacement discontinuity boundary element code, was last developed by Zipf into a version called MULSIM/NL [USBM 1992a, 1992b]. The code was used frequently in years past, but closure of the Bureau of Mines in 1996 marked the beginning of a pause in its development. A similar tool with distinctly different treatment of overburden idealization, LaModel, was subsequently developed [Heasley 1997] and largely displaced MULSIM/NL in the literature. However, recent work modeling deep western longwall coal mines [Larson and Whyatt 2013] has demonstrated that MULSIM has distinct advantages for regions with relatively stiff and strong overburden. This work required that MULSIM be revived and updated into a version called MulsimNL/Large. Updates include larger array sizes, greater precision, greater number of materials, and the addition of a five-point, six-segment pillar load/displacement model that provides the user a more flexible coal-strength model allowing hardening and softening before a final residual strength. MulsimNL/Large has the ability to calibrate to large load transfer distances observed in some western U.S. coal mines that appear to be caused by strong, massive units in the overburden and/or floor of a coal mine. Also, it provides the ability to calibrate gob stiffness to simulate measurements or estimates of overpanel weight distribution between gob and abutment, while still maintaining load transfer distance with minor adjustments. MulsimNL/Large can easily implement material strengths calculated from various pillar strength models. The five-point model gives MulsimNL/Large the ability to easily simulate pillar behavior that is extracted from detailed pillar models, such as FLAC3D. MulsimNL/Large or similar approaches should be considered for evaluating mining layouts where stratigraphic conditions are known to cause overpanel weight to transfer to an extent significantly longer than the empirical method widely used to calculate load transfer distances in the U.S. [Peng and Chiang 1984; Mark 1987; USBM 1990]."

"Different methods aiming at specific energy calculation and design of AG/SAG circuits are used in mining. They include JK DWT/SMC test, SAGDesign test and CWi/RWi/BWi tests. The simplest methods with no secret equations and giving energy required for grinding in kWh/t were proposed by F.?. Bond and J.H. Starkey. D.J. Barratt proposed to use results of CWi/RWi/BWi tests for AG/SAG mill sizing. The present paper gives an alternative for forecast of specific AG/SAG energy. The principle is similar to the theory proposed earlier and consists in cumulative AG/SAG energy calculation using indices of rod and ball grinding (RWi+BWi) without impact crushing index (CWi). Then total energy is divided between two grinding stages using special formulas based on extensive statistical information. The forecast indices of AG/SAG and ball grinding are similar to the SAGDesign testing results. Hereinafter the predicted indices are used for mill sizing of the whole grinding circuit. The method considered in the paper enables prediction of AG/SAG energy based on the test results according to Bond method. The proposed method version was not widely published earlier. The aim of the work was to elaborate cost-effective, reliable and accessible way to determine specific AG/SAG energy. At this stage of method development, it is recommended to use it only for works at preliminary Geometallurgy stage (Scoping, Pre-Feasibility). At design stage the obtained data should be confirmed by appropriate testing using alternative JK DWT/SMC and SAGDesign methods.INTRODUCTIONAppropriate crushing and grinding testing is required to design efficient comminution circuits. It is obviously important to obtain accurate information about ore hardness properties since the main energy consumption at the plant is associated with comminution processes. Moreover, it is required to apply the processes that make it possible to minimize operating costs and efficiently use capacity of the installed equipment installed.When studying ore hardness properties, it is required to take into account that breakage of the material is performed using different equipment. That is why accurate selection of the equipment and the circuit calculation without relevant testworks is impossible. Ideally, the testworks should provide answers to the following questions: determination of ore hardness properties, determination of specific energy consumption for comminution as well as obtaining of sufficient amount of statistically significant results from the tests. The results from crushability and grindability testworks in the first place provide assessment of ore hardness properties and in addition correlate with throughput of the respective equipment. The data obtained can be used for modeling of comminution circuits at the stage of the technology development"

Quantifying the performance of a comminution circuit relative to the potential that can be achieved is a standard requirement in justifying operating practice (the stick) and seeking operational upside (the carrot). Historic measures tend to focus on performance relative to laboratory design tests that provide a direct measure of specific grinding energy, such as the Bond Work index; or use dropweight breakage tests calibrated to a substantial database of operating sites, such as the SMC methodology. Although of value, such approaches are flawed in significant aspects. The assumption is that the laboratory prediction is correct and the single sample it is based on is representative. The database benchmarking methods are, by definition, locked into current average operating practice. These approaches do not illuminate upside; can ‘punish’ operations that are actually more efficient, such as grinding finer than standard operation; and reward poor operation that may comfortably produce a coarser grind than optimal for recovery or excess slimes that reduce recovery and increase water consumption and tailings volume. The authors present a set of established and easily applied measures, that draw together daily operation, highlight areas of opportunity and inefficiency, use simple samples and data, and can be used to provide the ‘size of the prize’ in pursuing specific areas of process improvement. These tools include size specific energy (SSE), overall operating effectiveness (OEE) which includes product quality, theory of constraints, and links this to the end objective – maximising the efficient production of valuable metals. Introduction Although the equilibrium conditions of the copper-tin alloys have been the subject of a ?great amount of research, the equilibrium diagram is still in doubt. The first systematic investigation of the series was made in 1894 by Le Chatelier, who published a freezing-point curve. In 1895, Roberts-Austen and Stansfield published the complete liquidus and partial solidus curves, which they modified somewhat in 1897. Their liquidus as given in 1897 is essentially that accepted today (Figure 3). Haycock and Neville also published a liquid us curve in 1897. In 1898, William Campbell published a series of micrographs showing the changes in microstructure which accompanied the thermal changes of Stansfield? s diagram. The classic work on the bronze series was published by Heycock and Neville in 1903. Their diagram was based on both thermal and microscopic evidence, and is the first for this series of alloys which can be considered nearly complete. Further, it was the first bronze diagram in which any attempt was made to apply the phase rule in the interpretation of the thermal and microscopic results. That portion of Heycock and Neville's diagram covered by the present work is reproduced in Figure 7.

Mother Earth has had a long life extending over two billion years, during which time she has changed from a mass of incandescent gases to her present form, exhibiting a density stratification from the extremely tenuous gases of the stratosphere to the heavy central nickeliron core. Man is now mining all the principal divisions of Mother Earth except the centrosphere. Nitrogen, oxygen, neon, and other rarer gases are being recovered from the air; magnesium, bromium, potash, borates, and other salts from lakes and seas; brines, medicinal mineral waters, and great quantities of water for domestic and industrial uses from surface and subsurface reservoirs; and, from the rocky crust, many minerals and fuels for our present industrial civilization as well as plants and animals for food and shelter. Productivity of soil is influenced both positively and negatively by man. There is some cause to bewail what may be considered a wasteful influence of men on soil. The general situation is bad in spots but not hopeless. The passing of large areas of fertile land in some areas is merely to be noted and not to be mourned. These lands could not have been used without decrease in their fertility. The productivity factor is affected by human activities. Many soils in the eastern and southern states are far richer and more productive now than they were at any previous time. Arctic soils are not productive

This report presents the results of laboratory mineral evaluations conducted by the federal Bureau of Mines under the joint sponsorship of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the Bureau a! Ships, U. S. Department of the Navy. The major purpose of this investigation was to examine and evaluate zirconium minerals representing sizeable deposits in an effort to locate com¬mercial sources of high-hafnium ores. Although determination of the hafnium content was the principal objective, each of the zirconium minerals also was analyzed for combined zirconium-hafnium oxide, silica, uranium, thorium, yttrium, and cerium. The general laboratory procedure involved microscopic examination of the test samples, concentration of the hafnium-bearing zirconium mineral by standard laboratory techniques, and analysis of the derived concentrate by quantitative microscopic, chemical, and X-ray spectrographic methods. Of the several hundred samples tested under this program, 147 are discussed in this report, including 94 from domestic occurrences and 53 from widespread foreign sources.

China is the largest coal producing country in the world. Coal is widely distributed in China and thus the mining conditions are complex and diverse. This paper summarizes the important achievements in the last 20 years in various mining methods including the extra thick seam with large mining height top coal caving, the thick seam with large mining height and top coal caving mining, the steep seam with top coal caving and fully-mechanized mining, the thin seam automated mining, and the backfill mining. At the same time, the rapid advance in the development of mining machinery and manufacturing has also contributed to the advancement of coal mining technology and the great improvement of coal mine safety. The future direction of China?s coal mining is to further improve mine safety as to improve the coal recovery rate, promote the pillar less mining technology, develop high-efficiency backfilling technology, develop steep seam high-efficiency mining technology for seams less than 10m thick, and high recovery mining techniques for extra thick seams, improve the reliability of mining equipment, and strengthen the protection and restoration of surface environments and water resources.

The introduction of roof bolts to Phalen Colliery in the Sydney Coalfield, Nova Scotia (annual output of 2Mt) has been successfully implemented in maingate and tailgate entries over the last four years. Monitoring of the roof bolted areas continues to be an integral part of the quality control program as the results are utilized to maintain safety and to aid in long-term design strategies. Although all gateroads in the Phalen Colliery have converted to roof bolts as their primary means of support, the majority of intersections which intersect the main slopes remain supported by large steel structures. Several intersections within the Phalen Colliery were monitored as they were created by the mining process. A comparison is made between intersections supported with only traditional 6.4 to 6.7 m steel structure and intersections supported by 2.44 m fully resin encapsulated roof bolts in conjunction with 7.6 m fully cement grouted cable bolts. Detailed monitoring was conducted using CA NM ET's intrinsically safe sonic probe extensometer datalogger which has the ability to read up to sixteen probes simultaneously at programmed intervals. The density of the data from the datalogger has allowed a better understanding of the deformation of cable bolted intersections than was possible with manual monitoring. Test results have helped mine operators to design safer cable bolted intersections.

This chapter examines three minor influences on flash smelting's industrial oxygen and oil requirements, i.e.: (a) recycle of molten converter slag to the flash furnace (b) gangue oxides and carbonates (e,g, Ah03, CaC03) in the flash furnace feed (c) minor sulfides (e.g. NiS} in the flash furnace feed. It then examines the. sensitivity of our flash furnace calculations to previously ignored aspects of smelting chemistry -Cu, S and Fe304 in slag and 0 in matte.

Entrainment is a process by which fine and ultrafine particles are transferred to the flotation froth from the top of the flotation pulp, and eventually discharge to the concentrate product, evenwhen they are not attached to gas bubbles. Therefore, entrainment can be considered as a two-step process, one at the upper layer of the pulp to the flotation froth, and the other from froth to the concentrate. Entrainment is inevitable for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic minerals and is one of the significant factors affecting concentrate grade. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the entrainment mechanisms and entrainment models, as well as a summary of the main factors affecting entrainment and the techniques thatmay be used to lower or eliminate entrainment. Based on the review, we point out that selective aggregation of fine and ultrafine gangue minerals using appropriate process aids (polymeric depressants, inorganic salts, etc.) to increase their particle sizes appears to be a convenient and economical method. Directions of further research along this line are discussed.

Chromium ore exploitation has commenced in 1948 in Albania and there are produced about 24.3 million tons up to the end of 2006. Last years the prices and need were increased notably. Main export of chromium ores and concentrates was accomplished respectively 114 500 ton and 13 000 ton in People Republic of China during 2006 year. Location, status, reserves and grade of chromium deposits of Albania are presented in the paper. Chromium ore enrichment is related with their composition and Cr2O3 content, as well as with market requests. Actually, high grade chromium ores with Cr2O3 content over 38% ~ 40% are directly exported or treated in metallurgy, but last time have been exported and chromium ores with 28% ~ 30% Cr2O3 content for the reason that dressing plants can not be operated for investment lack. High grade chromium ores have been treated in heavy media separation plant before 1990. It is presented flow sheet, figures and necessity to put in operation HMS plant in the paper. Actually, low grade chromium ores with content 16% ~ 20% Cr2O3 are not enriched for the lack of investments, but before 1990 they have been concentrated in dressing plants producing chromium concentrates grade 48% ~ 50% Cr2O3. In the paper are shown technological schemes and industrial figures during more than 20 years operation and possibilities to reconstruct these mineral processing plants. Only chromium mineral processing plant of Bulqiza is in operation using as raw material its old existing tailings. The flow sheet and figures show that are possibilities to increase recovery and grade of concentrate in the plant. Separation and concentration of slimes in suitable equipment gives visible improvement of Cr2O3 recovery. Several tests have been carried out with flotation and magnetic separation methods for enrichment of low grade chromium ores. Flow sheet and figures of mineral processing ores content olivine as gangue mineral are interesting, because combination of gravimetric with magnetic methods is necessary in this case. In the paper are presented the tests and good results of low chromium ore pre concentration. Metallurgical treatment of chromium ores to produce Ferro chrome, as well as technological process, figures, consume of electrical power and materials in Elbasani and Burreli furnaces are shown and necessary investments to treat in metallurgy all produced chromium ores in Albania are considered.

"AbstractThe results of research into the fatigue properties of SAE 1080 carbon steel and nickel-chromium-molylbdenum steel for mining drill rods are analysed and described in detail.The effect of water corrosion on the fatigue strength of drill rods of these two steels in the as-rolled condition has ,been investigated and the beneficial influence of shot-peening on their dry and water-corrosion fatigue strengths determined by employing the method developed previously (1).Eight S-N curves for as-rolled and shot-peened mining drill rods under both dry and water corrosion conditions have been derived and their shape and relative position are discussed. The main features relating to field performance of the drill rods are analysed.Purpose of Research and Outline of ProgrammeDRILLING holes in rock and ore by means of drill rods attached to a pneumatic drill is a basic procedure required in mining operations. Detonation of explosives placed in these holes is at present the only practical method of breaking down the rock and ore.A drilling rod is supported by its bit end in the drilled rock. Its shank end, fixed in the drilling machine, transmits impact energy to the cutting edges of the bit. On the field performance of the drill rod depend a number of basic mining operations such as sinking, drifting, and stoping. The drill rod is there-fore regarded as one of the most important tools used in the mining industry."

"Water is a primary commodity for most industrial processes. It has become a global focus in light of climate change and population growth. Reuse of process water has two major benefits - minimize the amount of fresh water added now and minimize the amount of discharge water that requires treatment later.Mining and mine product processing has its share of reused water. For example, reclaim water from a tailings impoundment, overflow from thickeners and leach solution to raffinate and back again all demonstrate the use and reuse of water in mining circuits. Eventually, a mine reduces production or ceases operations completely, eliminating the option to reuse the impacted water and, thus, requires treatment of the remaining water.Current methods of water treatment remove the impacts, providing clean water for discharge, but leaves behind a concentrated waste that requires further treatment or disposal of a hazardous waste. Freeport- McMoRan is currently testing three water treatment technologies specific for sulfate and/or metal removal from mine impacted water with the approach of transformation not concentration. These technologies provide clean water for alternative use while creating byproducts that could be marketable, or disposed as a nonhazardous material, thereby reducing the cost and longterm liability of disposal.The selection of a water treatment process is site-specific. The volume of water, contaminant to be removed, disposal options, length of time for treatment, location of plant and reagents and discharge requirements are some of the factors that need to be considered when selecting a water treatment process. Common water treatment technologies for mine impacted water consist of low- or high-density sludge (LDS/ HDS), reverse osmosis (RO) and evaporative technologies. In addition to operating costs, these processes require additional handling of the concentrated sludge or brine. Advanced water treatment technologies include ion exchange, solvent extraction and metals precipitation with or without the aid of a biological system. Some of the more complex systems have a series of unit operations to achieve required discharge regulations."

Taphole integrity is critical to all furnaces, but it is especially important in high intensity electric furnaces processing matte and metal of high superheat. Key furnace dimensions are the electrode proximity to the taphole, hearth sump below the taphole and the shape and location of the taphole in the furnace wall (e.g., circular versus rectangular furnace). In addition, electric furnace power density needs to be matched appropriately to any configuration to achieve operational reliability and furnace integrity. The role of furnace dimensioning is generically reviewed across many pyrometallurgical processes to explore potential impact on furnace taphole performance. Some empirical furnace dimensions and power density ratios of industrial furnaces are then compared to explore to what extent they may indeed influence taphole integrity.

Research efforts by the U.S. Bureau of Mines include running a series of displacement-discontinuity, boundary-element models to simulate the gateroad design at an underground coal mine in northwestern Colorado. The initial mine design is a yield-abutment chain pillar arrangement in a three-entry, longwall gateroad system. Pressure effects from mining the first and second panel were recorded using borehole pressure cells (BPCs). These field data were then compared directly to the model output. Observed yielding in the field was approximated by reducing material property values and/or removing pillar elements in the model. Model results using this calibration technique mirrored the field measurements consistently. Using the calibrated model parameters, a suite of models was run simulating an experimental entry design: exchanging the yield and abutment pillar locations. These model results reflect a 20¬to 33-percent reduction in core stresses in the yield pillar during mining of the second panel. Improved pillar and entry conditions are suggested by these predictive results. The design modifications were then implemented at the mine along a 150-m (500-ft) test section. Field observations and measurements from the experimental design test site compared favorably with trends of the model predictions.

TO certain people the name of Northern Rhodesia brings only a vague recollection of a distant country somewhere in Africa; to others, it means a big game territory and the opportunity for excellent shooting; to some, a land of sunshine and peace; but to mining men the name signifies the land where the latest discoveries of copper ore are astonishing the mining world and bid fair, in a few years, to make Northern Rhodesia one of the largest copper- producing countries. There is a fascination about this part of the globe that is somewhat similar to southern California, and at the same time there is that feeling of mystery peculiar to a tropical climate. Perhaps it is the isolation, the fear of wild animals, or the influence of an undefinable something which cannot be expressed.

A geometallurgical model is currently built in two different ways. The first and the most common way relies on geometallurgical testing, where a large number of samples are analysed for metallurgical response using small-scale laboratory tests, eg Davis tube testing. The second, mineralogical approach focuses on collecting mineralogical information over the orebody and building the metallurgical model based on mineralogy. At Lules University of Technology, Sweden, the latter method has been adopted and taken further in four ongoing PhD studies. The geological model gives modal composition by the help of element-to-mineral conversion and Rietveld X-ray diffraction. Texturally, the orebody is divided into different archetypes, and liberation measurements for each of them are carried out in processing fineness using IncaMineral, a SEM-based technique. The grindability and liberation spectrum of any given geological unit (sample, ore block, domain) are extrapolated from the archetypes. The process model is taken into a liberation level by mass balancing selected metallurgical tests using the particle tracking technique. The approach is general and can be applied to any type of ores. "Cerium is the most abundant rare earth metal and is often found in deposits along with small amounts of more valuable metals such as neodymium and gadolinium1. As a result, the production of cerium oxide often exceeds market demands, thus in some cases it would make more sense to remove the cerium from the process solutions before further purification. A common method of cerium removal is to precipitate CeO2 from the acidic leach liquors by raising the pH to oxidize cerium(III) to cerium(IV). This study investigates the oxidation kinetics using three oxidants; hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, and potassium permanganate. The effect of oxidant, pH, cerium concentration and temperature on the oxidation kinetics will be discussed. Cerium oxidation in solutions with pH ranging from 1.0 to 4.0 was investigated at cerium concentrations ranging from 2.0 g/L to 16.0 g/L. A cerium recovery of 40% can be achieved at different conditions with each oxidant at room temperature, with higher recovery at 60°C.INTRODUCTION Over the last 70 years, the rare earth elements (REE) have become crucial components of modern technology. These metals are categorized as light rare earths (LREE) or heavy rare earths (HREE) by governments and miners based on weight, abundance, and therefore value. The minerals bastnaesite, monazite, and xenotime compose the majority of the world?s exploitable sources of these metals (Binnemans, 2013; Parker and Baroch, 1971). Geologists classify the LREE ores as „cerium group? minerals, approximately 50% cerium oxide by weight. The cerium group minerals monazite and bastnaesite compose the majority of world production, leading to an overproduction of cerium relative to world demand. This ratio of light to heavy REE in deposits has led to a phenomenon referred to as the balance problem (Binnemans et al., 2013). As an example, to produce 1 tonne of europium oxide from a bastnaesite deposit 450 tonnes of cerium oxide must be processed. This means that any push to increase production and access the value of the HREE metals will drive down the value of the LREE metals leading to diminishing returns (Zepf, 2016). These ores also contain measurable levels of thorium, subjecting them to complex radioactive waste regulations. During the 20th century, the USA was the largest producer of rare earth metals (REMs), primarily sourced from the Mountain Pass mine in California. However, due to a combination of market dynamics and regulations, China has dominated the market for the last two decades. The largest Chinese REE mine, Bayan Obo, produces rare earth (RE) concentrate as a byproduct of iron mining, decreasing their relative production costs (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 2005). This mine alone represents about half of world bastnaesite production (Zhi and Yang, 2014). Rising demand for high-tech products has forced Chinese producers to commission other large mines, climbing to 90% of world production in the early years of the new millennium (Mancheri, 2016). This presents the west with a looming supply risk of these critical metals in the future."
