A pilot - scale fluidized feeder was developed for continuously feeding up to 1 ton of pulverized coal per hour to a pressure gasifier . Fluidization in the 3 - foot - diameter by 34-1 / 2 - foot - high feeder is effected by two streams of inert gas , a technique called zone fluidization . A stream of inert gas through a drilled plate in the base of a central column near the bottom of the feeder fluidizes the coal . Another stream through a drilled plate in the annulus between the central column and feeder wall provides a source of semifluidized coal for the central column . Fluidized coal from the central column discharges through an extraction funnel and discharge line . Zone fluidization provided good fluidization with moderate requirement for fluidizing gas . Instruments were developed for metering and recording the flow rate of fluidized coal . A system was developed for storing , and weighing pulverized coal , and then delivering it in fluidized form at about 1 to 8 tons per hour .

"Bonded magnets are important category in permanent magnets. They are made by one of the following processes: compression bonding, injection molding, extrusion, calendering. An overview of the various bonded magnet processes and properties of products made with different magnet materials along with their applications are discussed. The main emphasis will be on the use of bonded NdFeB and ferrite magnets.IntroductionBonded magnets are a major growth area in permanent magnets. Bonded magnets are made by any one of the following processes: Compression bonding; Injection Molding; Extrusion and Calendering [1,2]. Compression and injection molded magnets are rigid magnets. Materials used in calendering process produce flexible magnets. Only the extrusion process makes both rigid and flexible magnets. The binders used for the bonded magnets vary depending on the processes. Thermoset, thermo-plastic and elastomeric binders are respectively used in compression, injection and the calendering process. Extrusion molding uses elastomers or thermo-plastic materials. The most co=on magnetic materials, Ferrite, SmCo, Alnico and NdFeB can be used in any of the above processes either alone or in combination as hybrid magnets. Another material that has been developed for co=ercial application is SmFeN. Making the material has been challenging and it is being used in niche market applications in limited quantitiesIn the extrusion process, a highly loaded compound is used to produce strip or sheet and is continuously extruded through a die. In calendering the granulated compound is rolled to produce a continuous wide sheet. In the compression bonding process a uniaxial pressing force is used. These magnets have higher loading compared to injection molded magnets. In injection molding the material is forced into a mold cavity and has lower loading compared to compression molded magnets [2,3]. Most of the flexible magnets are made using extrusion and calendering processes and the most co=on magnet material is inexpensive ferrite. Flexible magnets have been made using rare earth materials, but on a very limited basis.The major advantages of magnets processed by extrusion and calendering are as follows: inexpensive tooling, automation; practically any 2D geometry; fast production rates; no chipping or breaking; a wide range of properties; on-line magnetization; easy to convert (e.g. cut, punch or shape).Compression bonded magnets are inexpensive to manufacture. They have higher magnetic properties compared to injection molded magnets; however lower than their sintered counterparts. The magnet shape is restricted to simple geometries and they require careful handling. Their isotropic nature allows complex magnetizing patterns."

Design features and operating methods of ASARCO's new unit for the continuous melting and casting of tough pitch copper at Perth Amboy are described. Preliminary studies made for determinitzg economic feasibility and design details are also presented. Cathodes are preheated with oil and melted in an electric furnace at 40-ton per hr rate, from whence the molten copper is fed simultaneously to the wire bar casting wheel and the continuous casting of cakes and billets. In the early 1950's the copper refining furnaces at ASARCO's Perth Amboy plant reached a point where major expenditures would have to be made for replacement of the furnaces and the auxiliary equipment. The problem was whether to continue with the standard reverberatory furnaces or to consider continuous melting in electric furnaces. Reverberatory furnaces have been used for years in the copper industry and for some 50 years at the Perth Amboy plant. Reverberatory melting practice, however, imposes certain restrictions. Low-temperature carbonization of coal in Japan served as an important source of liquid fuels during the war. Six plants operating in Japan Proper produced 203,069 KL (53.7 million gallons) of liquid fuel from 1940 until the end of the war in August 1945, while four additional plants in Karafuto and Korea produced 211,943 KL (56.0 million gallons) for a total of 415,012 KL (109.7 million gallons) of liquid products. Semicoke produced in these plants was used for domestic fuel, for gasi- fication in portable gas producers on automotive vehicles, and to replace imported low-volatile bituminous coal in the manufacture of metallurgical coke. Since 1936 one plant had produced more than 300,000 metric tons of semicoke for blending with bituminous coal to form coke, while the total production of semicoke since the beginning of the industry in 1923 is approxi- mately 2,000,000 metric tons. Despite an apparent annual carbonizing capacity of about 2,000,000 metric tons of coal for the entire country, the maximum amount of scmicoke produced during the peak year, 1943, was 468,446 metric tons. The equipment used is primarily of Gorman design. Just before the end of the war, 6 plants using 20 Lurgi carbonizers were operating with a total rated capacity of more than 1,500,000 metric tons of coal per year, while 2 Koppors units had a combined annual rated capacity of 400,000 metric tons of coal. One plant using the Japanese-designed Mimura system was in service but with so much mechanical trouble that its output was small, while in another plant 4 Wanisht carbonizers of Japanese design but based on an early German development were running satisfactorily, and carbonizing about 100,000 metric tons of coal per year. A single installation of 15 American-designed Knowles ovens was operating near Tokyo but was carbonizing pitch for electrode carbon. ..! No true low-temperature process used in Japan could carbonize strongly. caking coals satisfactorily. The Mimura process designed for this purpose was unsuccessful, as was the Shimomura process before it, while the Lurgi, Koppers, and Wanishi systems operated only with noncaking or very weakly caking coals. The Knowles ovens, really a medium-temperature process, could carbonize-caking coal without difficulty...

Conventional processing of poly-metallic gold containing flotation concentrates are challenging for a number of reasons. One reason is that substantial copper and zinc in the cyanide leach solution compete with gold and silver for carbon adsorption sites. In this study, metal-cyanide adsorption kinetics and equilibrium are measured on three samples of coconut derived activated carbon and one sample of synthetic carbon. Loading selectivity was confirmed to be in the order gold>silver>copper>zinc for all carbon samples. The synthetic carbon tested showed promising results in terms of loading kinetics and capacity for precious metals.CITATION:Lakemond, S, Ku, L I and Vaughan, J, 2013. PAYMASTER CONSOLIDATED MINES, LIMITED, began an investigation into the economy and use of detachable bit drill-steel in June, 1937. This investigation has continued to the present time, and was made necessary by transportation and distribution difficulties that had arisen through the use of standard steel in three widely separated mine areas serviced by a central steel-sharpening shop. Detachable bit drill-steel performance was first studied in the workings of No. 2 mine, where the rock being drilled was composed mainly of porphyry or tourmaline, and where standard drill-steel transportation costs had been excessive. The results obtained in this early work definitely established the economy of detachable bit drill-steel at No. 2 mine. This conclusion was reached when the 're-grind' system of re-sharpening dulled detachable bits was 1n use. Preliminary observations on the performance of detachable bit drill-steel in the quartz-carbonate veins of No. S and No. 6 mines gave encouraging results, and warranted a large-scale investigation under practical mining conditions. All drilling operations were gradually changed over to use of detachable bit drill-steel. This change was completed by February, 1938.

Corrosion is a major operational problem in amine-treating plants causing significant expenditures each year, Corrosion may become more severe when the amine plants contain process contaminants ? namely heat-stable salts. The heat-stable salts enter the plants with feed-gas streams and makeup-solution, and/or are produced within the plants by reactions of alkanolamine and available carboxylic-acid anions, This work investigated interaction corrosion effects that may exist in amine-treating plants containing a mixture of heat-stable salts, The investigation was experimentally carried out in a 5 kmol/m3 monoethanolamine (MEA) solution containing 0,20 mol/mol carbon dioxide (CO2) loading at 80°C under atmospheric pressure using carbon steel 1018, Six heat-stable salts, including formate, oxalate, bicine, acetate, thiosulfate and chloride, were tested with a series of salt combinations, Potentiodynamic Polarization, Tafel Extrapolation, and Cyclic Polarization were used for revealing corrosion behavior, determining corrosion rate, and examining the pitting tendency, respectively, Results show that thiosulfate induces the most corrosive environment when present either individually or in the form of salt mixtures.

The sulfide smelting industry is striving for up-scaling their operations by increasing the throughput and efficiencies of the furnaces. The physical phenomena related to refractory materials prevailing in smelters and furnaces are highly complex. The refractory materials are exposed to fairly high temperatures, thermo-mechanical stresses, penetration of pores, erosion and chemical corrosion. The application of numerical simulation tools is needed for the refractory engineering task to consider those phenomena and to evaluate the impact of operational regimes on the refractory design and finally on the integrity of the furnaces. The work discusses case studies of simulations addressing problems and questions related to the refractory design process. Practical simulation approaches which employ simplified models are introduced as the engineering process demands results in a reasonable time.

Vanadium is a transition metal, ductile and silver-gray. It is harder than most metals and steels and it has a good resistance to corrosion. It is stable against alkalis and sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Vanadium is oxidized in air at about 660° C (1,220° F), although an oxide layer forms even at room temperature. The chemistry of vanadium is noteworthy for the accessibility of the four adjacent oxidation states, 2-5. In aqueous solution, the colors are lilac V2+, green V3+, blue VO2+ and, at high pH, yellow VO42-. Considered to be as abundant as zinc, metallic vanadium is not found in nature, but it is known to exist in about 65 different minerals. Economically significant examples include patronite (VS4), vanadinite (Pb5(VO4)3Cl), associated to the uranium mineral carnotite (K2(UO2)2(VO4)2?3H2O) and in a vanadium mica called roscoelite K(V3+,Al,Mg)[(Si,Al)4O10] (OH)2. Other important vanadium ore oxides are montroseite (V,Fe)O(OH) and corvusite (Na,Ca,K)V8O2.4H2O. Much of the world?s vanadium mine production comes from magnetite-hosted deposits and, to a lesser extent, sedimentary-hosted sandstone.

This is the final report on Grant No. G0144067. The report presents the results of a number of laboratory studies carried cut in several different ways to determine the effectiveness of foam for blocking the flow of gas in coal. The effectiveness; (of foam for retarding or blocking the flow gas in various porous media has been observed by many investigators1-4 but we are not aware of similar detailed studies in coal. Because of the diversity of our experiments, the key findings and general conclusions are presented very briefly in Section II. As a convenience to the reader a complete table of cements is included to enable the reader to find those experiments and studies of greatest interest.

"This project analyzed the efficiency of incorporating the use of directional drilling technology into coal overburden blasting. Directional drilling is currently in use in the petroleum industry and it is believed that it will be a valuable asset in the mining industry. This project has shown that directional drilling can be a viable technology for use in the coal overburden removal process resulting in increased drill utilization and potential for cost savings. Future work regarding blasting and geotechnical evaluation should be performed to solidify the concept. INTRODUCTION Determine the Potential Drill Utilization Improvements and Rock Fragmentation Requirements Using Directional Drilling in a Coal Mining Overburden Highwall Application was a project funded by Atlas Copco Drilling Solutions (Atlas Copco) based in Garland, Texas. The project was developed and researched by Montana Tech of the University of Montana. This project was intended to show how the use of directional drilling can increase drill utilization, while decreasing costs, without sacrificing overburden blasting results. This paper discusses a review of the literature, the methods performed, conclusions and future work Background Atlas Copco theorized that an alternative approach to drilling a cast blast pattern would be beneficial to coal mining operations by increasing drill utilization and therefore, decreasing overall costs. Increasing drill utilization results in an increase in the amount of time the drill is being productive, more drill bit time in ground. Atlas Copco’s theory is that by incorporating directional drilling in the design of a cast blast pattern, a drill rig could drill multiple directional holes, which are the length of the cast blast, from a single drill set up. A drill goes through a series of steps to complete a blast pattern, these steps include: tramming to the hole location, leveling the drill, drilling the hole, cleaning the hole, and retracting the drill steel. This process is repeated hundreds of times until the whole pattern is completed. The most time intensive part of this process is drilling out the blast pattern. Integrating directional drilling into this process could decrease the overall time it takes to drill out a blast pattern by minimizing the amount of time spent tramming and setting up for each subsequent hole. Tramming and drill set up are two aspects of the drilling process where the drill tool is not engaged with the ground and, therefore, not being utilized. A cast blast pattern designed to utilize directional drilling will allow the drill tool to be “in the hole” longer and will improve drill utilization. This change in drill utilization was analyzed. Drilling and blasting is an integral part of the mining process, without it mining would be a slower process and less material could be mined. Drilling provides holes for explosives to be loaded and then blasted. Blasting has been found to be the most cost effective method of fracturing rock in mining for material removal. Blasting is also used as a low-cost method to move the rock in open cast mines, commonly referred to as cast blasting. A cast blast is a large blast designed to allow for the maximum amount of overburden to be removed using explosives in a single blast thereby uncovering more coal at a lower cost. Not all the material is blasted to cast-to-final, which requires that material to be moved with large mining machinery. Material that is considered cast-to-final is material that has been thrown far enough to never be moved again in the coal extraction process, therefore it is in its final resting place. A typical cast profile and cast-to-final area is shown in Figure 1."

This paper stems from recent multidisciplinary research between mining engineering and health researchers at the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria, Canada. It considers the implications of a future state of sustainable mining development that places more emphasis on consideration of mine community health and sustainability within the definition of mine planning best practice. It reviews recently completed research studies on mining and other resource communities in British Columbia, Canada and a process undertaken by the research team to share research findings. It then examines the outcomes of this knowledge sharing process placing emphasis on the development of a more collaborative and enhanced mine planning process that integrates community- level indicators of health and sustainability to more effectively address mine impact-benefits. The paper concludes by discussing current initiatives that aim to benefit the mining industry, communities, and governments as they plan future mineral development projects.

Ilmenite (iron titanate) is the source of over 90% of all the titanium produced in the world today. At some point during production of titanium dioxide or titanium metal the iron impurity must be removed. Too often it becomes a waste instead of a product. DuPont and MINPRO have developed a solid-state process which separates the iron and titanium components of ilmenite into different high-purity powders, which can be separated using conventional mineral processing techniques. The main reactor in this process is a unique high-temperature ball mill, where the iron segregates from the ilmenite lattice with the assistance of catalytic quantities of He\. The results of lab, pilot plant, theoretical, and scale-up studies are presented and discussed.

Australia is a world leader in the design and operation of mines accessed by the decline method. Literature indicates that a number of metalliferous underground mines using the decline system are also increasing steadily. This increase has generated a great deal of interest in underground haulage systems in future due to the huge costs involved in the development of declines. Studies have also shown that the current method of accessing orebodies by the conventional decline method has proved to be expensive, especially for narrow vein deposits. This is because decline development costs are influenced by mine planning and design parameters as well as available haulage systems that the mining engineer can choose from. The current access method suggests that more waste material is being extracted because of the size of decline openings adopted (5.5 mW and 5.5 mH). Also the conventional 1:7 decline gradient and turning radius of 20 m makes decline lengths, as well as the duration of development, excessively longer. This paper discusses results of a mine design case study with monorail technology as a method of accessing and developing the decline. The proposed system is economical, has high advance rates and offers a significant reduction in capital expenditure. The study compares costs, development metres and the duration of decline development using the monorail system with the conventional (truck haulage) access method. Results obtained indicate that the monorail technology has the potential to reduce the decline length by over 62.6 per cent and decline costs by 63 per cent for the case study. The monorail system also reduces the total capital development costs by 22 per cent for the same case study. Due to rapid development resulting from increased advance rates and the shorter decline length coupled with smaller decline openings, the time to access the deposit reduced by 71.8 per cent. This case study demonstrates that the economics of narrow vein deposits can be improved significantly by using the monorail system of decline development.

Future developments in the mining sector will be driven by the need to increase safety, ecological sustainability and efficiency. Autonomous systems represent a huge step towards achieving these goals. This paper describes the basic infrastructure of an autonomous system – essentially a network of distributed sensors. Although the sensors are distributed, the overarching communication network with its related middleware offers a transparent and uniform layer. This middleware acts as an abstraction layer which priorities information and provides information to other platforms on request. This permits higher-level autonomous functionality to utilise all information available in the system regardless of where data has been generated or via which physical communication link it has been processed.The Personnel Proximity Detection (PDD) system is described in detail as an example, with details not only of the system itself, but also of the essential full integration and how the abstraction layer allows this technology to be plugged in at any location of the network. The paper ends with a summary of the content and a conclusion.

The lifecycle of a resource, specifically a metal, is often depicted as circle from primary production from mining to minerals processing and via manufacturing and use to disposal and recycling. When a material is recycled, it is considered as saved energy compared to producing the material from primary source. This is, however, a simplified representation. At each step of the life cycle, there are changes in the quality of the material due to different materials chemical and physical interaction, phase transformations due to diffusion, radiation etc. Due to these physical and chemical phenomena there are losses of material, which as determined by thermodynamics are not recoverable within the life cycle. This can be considered as an increase embodied energy per mass unit of substance and loss exergy from the material cycle. With low cyclic loss, the material will remain in the recycling loop for a long time, while with high cyclic loss it will disappear fast. Where you put the material determines how fast it disappears from the resource cycle. In this research paper the phenomena of quality degradation of material and idea of increase of embodied energy and exergy loss within a resource cycles is portrayed. The cyclic nature of material states and transitions and energy consequences of material quality degradation as well as the parameters affecting the length of the time scales of the material cycles are described. Currently the cyclic embedded energy and the history of material is not taken under consideration in generic life cycle assessment. This easily results into a conclusion that lifetime of product is optimized only in terms of how much energy an appliance uses during its lifetime, while ignoring the loss of embedded energy due to the effects caused by the environs the material is subjected to during the cycle. Better description of the time properties of material give us a possibility to design toward optimum lifetime of products in terms of resource efficiency. The Eco Ridge deposit is located in the Elliot Lake mining camp in Northern Ontario, Canada. Between 1955 and 1996, the area produced more than 138,000 t (300 million pounds) of U3O8 and very significant amounts of thorium and heavy rare earths. Based on the NI 43-101 Preliminary Economic Assessment by Roscoe Postle Associates (RPA) dated June 2012, and the economic review by RPA as announced in Pele Mountains’ Press release dated September 12, 2013, the Eco Ridge Mine Project would extract and process 46 Mt of material to produce about 19,000 t (42 million pounds) of U3O8 and about 65,000 t of rare earth oxide (REO) over a 14-year life. This paper discusses process optimization studies including beneficiation and hydrometallurgical testwork. The proposed modified flowsheet includes the flotation and processing of 1) a pyrite concentrate, 2) a dominantly light rare earth elements (LREE) concentrate, 3) a concentrate containing most of the balance of the uranium and heavy rare earths (HREE), and 4) a relatively inert tailings.

Emulsions have been developed for over forty years to become the most common water-resistant explosives used in the mining industry. An emulsion is a common commodity, with many examples in our day to day lives of one immiscible liquid dispersed in another. They have varying degrees of stability from a few seconds to years. What makes their application in explosives unique is twofold. They contain a high concentration of salts in the dispersed phase and also have a far larger volume of dispersed phase than continuous phase. The continuous phase contains at least 75% by weight of an oxidizer such as ammonium nitrate dissolved in water. The crystallization point of these solutions is often >60oC which means that the formation of the emulsion has to occur at an elevated temperature. Once the emulsion is cooled, its structure helps to prevent the formation of crystals in an otherwise unstable system. At room temperature there is a considerable potential for the small oxidizer droplets to crystallize which is countered by the strength of the oil layer and also the size of the emulsion droplet. If the emulsion droplet is too large then crystals can form which may lead to rapid deterioration of the emulsion and overall crystallization, accompanied by a temperature rise as the heat of crystallization is released from the emulsion. The size of the emulsion droplet is critical in preventing crystal growth and subsequent droplet coalescence and emulsion break down. One method of examining emulsions and understanding their structure is to use optical microscopy to measure droplet size and also emulsion deterioration from shearing, temperature cycling and when contaminants are introduced, such as detergents, different oil types, coating agents and dust particles. INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a shield and compressed air for construction of a short section of a pair of twin single-track tunnels for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) transit system. Although only two blocks long, this section posed the greatest difficulties to both engineers and contractors, and is the most expensive section of line construction on the MARTA system. All this derives directly from its setting--these tunnels had to be constructed through mixed-face conditions. SETTING The Broad Street tunnels form a link between the Peachtree Center and Five Points Stations, in the heart of Atlanta's central business district (Figure 1). Peachtree Center sits atop a solid rock ridge, which inspired the design of a deep rock-mined station, as described in the 1979 RETC. Five Points Station is MARTA's hub--the intersection of the system's two main branches. It is located in the old railroad gulch, a filled-in erosional valley at the base of Peachtree Ridge, and was constructed by open-cut methods. The alignment and profile of the Broad Street tunnels were closely constrained by these two adjacent anchors, and in the six-block stretch between them there was very little room for maneuvering. Since the rock ridge petered out about in the middle of the section, it was evident at the outset that there would be about two blocks of rock tunneling at the north end, two blocks of soft ground construction at the south, and two blocks of mixed-face in between. It is this central two-block section that is the focus of this paper.

THE territory covered in this discussion includes all the states west of the Mississippi river. Agriculture is expanding each year in this section, but until recent years the application of commercial fertilizers as an aid to crop production was not practised to any great extent. The use of commercial fertilizers has increased somewhat, but is still on a small basis as compared with the tonnages used else- where in the United States. During 1928 these western states used 665,100 tons of all classes of fertilizer as compared 'with 7,933,600 tons used in the whole United States; or this western area, compromising near- ly two-thirds the land area, uses about 5 per cent of the total fertilizer. To show how large a tonnage one state may consume, North Carolina for the year 192s used 1,349,360 tons of commercial fertilizer or about twice the amount used by 22 western states.
