Structural steel final mechanical properties of strength and ductility are predominately generated by the final ferrite grain size/packet size and homogeneity of that ferrite grain size/packet size through the cross-sectional area. Forty to seventy percent of the strength components come from how fine the final cross-sectional ferrite grain size/packet size that can be produced.[1] All the ductility properties of structural steels for a given microstructure are predominately driven by how fine AND homogenous the final cross-sectional ferrite grain size/packet size can be refined.[2,3,4] One key ductility property of structural steels used in construction and energy transmission applications is fatigue. Both low and high cycle fatigue can be realized in these end applications, however, low cycle fatigue is typically the predominate mechanism. In construction applications the environment for fatigue is typically air, such as in wind towers or high-rise building construction. In energy applications, there is an interest in high pressure (5.5 – 21 MPa, 800-3000 psi) gaseous hydrogen as an alternative fuel source to fossil fuels. A project to study the effect of the cross-sectional grain size/homogeneity of a relatively pure polygonal ferrite microstructure on the fatigue performance in air and high-pressure gaseous hydrogen has been developed. This paper will discuss the project strategy, microstructure developed for the project and initial test results.

The production of kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America exceeds 13 million tons sold into higher value market segments. With a few exceptions, the markets supplied exhibit mature growth rates. In some market sectors, technology changes have and continue to occur shifting pigment-type consumption and growth. New sources of supply will impact current businesses. New product and process developments for kaolin and calcium carbonates are continuing. Each of these issues is examined in developing a view of the future for kaolin and calcium carbonate in North America.

Surface mining and reclamation of a southeastern Ohio site with sandstone-shale overburden resulted in (as compared to premining levels): 1) runoff volumes and peak rates that increased by a factor of from 2 to 10 during mining and after reclamation, 2) destruction of the "aquifer" perched on the underclay of the mined coal bed and gradual, but, as yet incomplete redevelopment of this aquifer after reclamation, 3) no immediate effect on another, lower perched "aquifer", 4) up to 100 times greater sediment concentrations in runoff. Results were influenced by increasing annual precipitation amounts through the period of record; 1978, 1979, and 1980 (postreclamation years) experienced precipitation amounts approaching or exceeding long-term normalcy for the area. Part of the reason that the site produced more runoff after reclamation than before mining is that the premine condition was one of an open, porous soil under woodland, while the postreclamation condition was one of a compacted, bulldozed soil. Sediment concentration results were influenced by failure of the postreclamation erosion control system and by a series of detention reservoirs above the stream monitoring station.

When heated in the absence of oxygen, pyrite from refractory gold concentrates decomposes endothermically to pyrrhotite, releasing sulphur. The decomposition starts at the particle surface and progresses inwards, leaving an adhering layer of porous pyrrhotite. Use of the conventional shrinking-core model implicitly assumes a negligible partial pressure of sulphur in the bed, but this pressure is in fact at least equal to the equilibrium vapour pressure of sulphur over pyrite, constituting the principal control of the rate of decomposition. Further experiments showed a decrease in reaction rate as the conversion increased. Both phenomena are attributed to the persistence of non-isothermal conditions in the fluidised bed during pyrolysis, caused by the endothermic nature of the reaction and the relatively slow rates of heat transfer to particles and vapour removal from the bed. The Bureau of Mines through its contract research program recently analyzed the mining and environmental requirements in the premining stage for copper mining in the northern highland of Wisconsin. The Critical-Path-Method (CPM) was used in this research. However, a step-by-step derivation of the CPM Diagram was beyond the scope of this effort. The Bureau of Mines objective now is to show, step by step, how the original hand-computed CPM Diagram was constructed. The streamlining (restructuring) of this diagram from the original effort is also summarized. The critical path time (longest time) through the original CPM Diagram was 25.12 yr, excluding public liaison effort. This diagram showed the involvement of the regulatory agency, mining applicant and public in the premining stage. Analysis of this diagram produced a streamlined version which reduced the critical path time by nearly 7 yr. The CPM construction methodology offered here may be applied to mine planning for any mining operation.

This study presents a method for the determination of intra-particle diffusivities in ion-exchange resins for the purposes of evaluating the state of resin degradation during service. The method uses a zero length column (ZLC) in a closed circuit with variable speed pump and reservoir. The intra-particle diffusion is determined from absorption data by using the Nernst-Plank approximation along with the ‘mass transfer factor’ - which is a product of the mass transfer coefficient (kf )and the concentration of the adsorbing ion in the liquid at the surface of the resin - in a computer algorithm fitting simulated curves to experimental data.. Through this approach the changed intra-particle diffusivity, of a gel-type acid resin, over a 1000 loading and elution cycles, is shown.

The size by size batch flotation behaviour of copper activated sphalerite from synthetic mixtures with quartz was determined. In terms of recovery of sphalerite, the size fractions could be grouped into coarse, intermediate, and fine ranges. The behaviour of the coarse and fine ranges was significantly poorer than that of the intermediate range in both the extent and rate of flotation.Each size fraction had a fast and a slow floating component.The main effect of changing the copper sulphate addition was to alter the proportion of any size fraction which was fast floating. No correlation could be found, between the amount of copper on the spha:lerite andeither the flotation rate of the mineral or the amount of copper added to the system. It was found that fine particles did not appear to consume greatly disproportionate amounts of copper sulphate during conditioning. A modified conditioning procedure was found to lead to a higher rate of flotation and recovery of coarse sphalerite and to make poss1ble substantial savings of copper sulphate.

Rock engineering has now been practised as a discipline for about50 years, and many sophisticated methods of analysis for use in rock engineering design have been developed. However, analysis is only a tool for use in engineering design, and rock masses are often so complex that realistic modelling of them, even with sophisticated methods of analysis, is impossible. At the other end of the scale, rock mass classification methods have been developed to quantify the rock mass. These ?numbers? are now widely used for assessment of stability of underground and surface excavations in rock, for the determination of rock support requirements, and for the estimation of rock mass strength and deformation properties. In considering these areas, the two concepts?design, and prediction of behaviour?will be dealt with. The discussion will be introduced by a consideration of the characteristics of the rock mass, which will highlight the variability in its properties and hence the uncertainty in the behavioural parameters. Examples of real projects will be used to illustrate the discussion.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream pH is very important in leach mining and treatment of MIW (mining influenced water). On the production side, solution acidity can impact SX (solvent extraction) effectiveness through PLS (pregnant leach solution) and raffinate pH. Many older operations and legacy mining sites generate ARD (acid rock drainage) that is too weak for profitable metal production by conventional means and faces costly wastewater treatment for mitigation and disposal. For wastewater and environmental treatment, neutralization to precipitate and remove metal contaminants to clean the wastewater is the dominant approach. Traditional lime neutralization and precipitation is most often used but results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS); which focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources, has developed a new “reagentless” neutralization process. Electricity is utilized in its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform capability to controllably raise target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost approach yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. It can result in less sludge generation and enables possibilities to selectively recover contaminants as potentially saleable products for new revenue generation to offset further offset treatment costs. DEMET Overview BPS’s patented electrolytic DEMET platform leverages solid scientific and chemistry foundations through its advanced design to achieve capabilities and performance not previously realized. Consequently, DEMET can provide a superior, extremely versatile, and more cost-effective electrolytic treatment option where a multitude of FEED and PRODUCT stream combinations might be employed in comparison to traditional tankhouse electrolytic cells."

Introduction The Homestake Mining Co. has always been big on gold. After 108 years in the business, the company and its principal product are almost synonymous. The relationship continues. On Sept. 28, 1985, Homestake held formal dedication ceremonies for its newest gold mine - McLaughlin. The McLaughlin open-pit operation is located in northern California, some 113 km (70 miles) northeast of San Francisco. It lies near the boundaries of three counties - Napa, Yolo, and Lake - and a portion of its facilities are located in each. McLaughlin was originally the site of the Manhattan mercury mine that produced nearly 80,000 flasks of the quicksilver from the 1860s to 1978. At the September dedication, Homestake renamed the mine in honor of the late Donald H. McLaughlin. McLaughlin was with Homestake for nearly 60 years. He rose from exploration geologist to his ultimate positions of chief executive officer, director, chairman of the board of directors, chairman emeritus, and chairman of the executive committee. The discovery of the McLaughlin deposit occurred in 1978, the last year of operation for the Manhattan mine. Homestake geologists used a newly developed model and found surface gold at the mine site. That same year, Homestake signed an agreement with the property owner and began a two-and-a-half year exploration program. An initial discovery announcement of 31.1 t (1 million oz) of gold was made in 1980. In 1981, this was revised to 93.3 t (3 million oz), or 18 Mt (20 million st) of ore grading 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st). Expected mine life is 20 years. Construction began in September 1983, following the issuance of stage one permits. Start-up of operations took place in early 1985 and the first gold-silver dore bar was poured on March 4. Since then, more than 540 kt (600,000 st) of ore has been milled, producing about 1.6 t (50,000 oz) of gold. Of special interest at McLaughlin is the use of three autoclaves for gold extraction. According to Homestake, this is a first. The autoclaves are designed for a 90% gold recovery rate. Early results have proven yields at this rate and higher. The off gas from a smelter is cooled and dust removed in an electrostatic precipitator before approximately 95% of the sulphur dioxide (S02) is converted to sulfuric acid. However, the tail gas may need to be polished to remove the rest S02 to meet demands. A flue gas desulphurization (FGD) system, as usually applied to S02 removal on coal and oil fired Power Station, is suitable for polishing tail gases from copper smelters. The ALSTOM Seawater FGD process makes use of the alkalinity in the seawater to absorb and neutralize S02. Before being returned to the sea, the seawater is treated to comply with environmental regulations. As the ALSTOM Seawater FGD process uses no reagent and produces no byproduct, it is extremely cost-effective for coastal installations. The first SWFGD plant started operation in 1968. Over 60 of these units have been installed worldwide. The ALSTOM Seawater FGD process removes S02 from flue gas flows corresponding to a total of 70,000,000 Nm3 /h. Suitable for thermal power stations, smelters and oil refineries, ALSTOM Seawater FGD plants efficiently treats flue gases in the range of 300,000 Nm3/h to 2, 700,000 Nm3 /h per FGD plant, containing 20 - 6,500 ppm of S02.

Aperam is a global player in producing of stainless, electrical and special steel qualities. The steelmaking plant in Timoteo Brasil is equipped with one AODconverter for stainless steel and one MRPL-converter for special steel production. After almost 20 years of operation Aperam decided to exchange the existing 80 t MRP-L converter by a new one including a new trunnion ring and a state of the art suspension system. Due to an optimized design the inner volume of the new converter could be increased which comes along with improved production. A special feature is a flange connection in the barrel section of the converter. This allowed to avoid any critical site welding and the time between shut down of the old and cold commissioning of the new converter could be done with 17 days only.

The various Latin American countries are undergoing a slow process of industrialization. The harvesting of one or two agricultural commodities or the mining of a few marketable minerals is being supplemented by development of an Integrated industrial economy. In many countries, progress in this direction has not been rapid, but as it gains impetus an increasing market for cement is a natural consequence. This is evident from the fact that industrialization is linked with increasing transportation, and means of transportation are very poor in much of Latin America. Bridges, culverts, and concrete Highway's, now scattered sparingly throughout the vast land areas south of the United States, must multiply as the demands of industry increase and as a higher scale of living is attained. Eventually the South American countries will be linked by modern highways. Furthermore, the arid climate of many regions creates a demand for construction of dams and irrigation works, and a continent poor in coal reserves but with abundant water power inevitably must direct its energies toward the construction of hydroelectric power plants. Countries rich in raw materials but with few natural harbors have urgent need of massive concrete breakwaters and docks. The demand for concrete in houses will also grow. Standards of living are low, and perishable building materials are widely used. As living conditions improve cement will be used increasingly in home construction. Even in the field of simple and modest housing cement affords a means of creating low-priced verminproof and fireproof homes, for which the need it imperative under climatic conditions that prevail in this area of the world. Already many of the countries have undertaken extensive public works, and such programs are likely to increase. Assuming moderate industrial progress and stabilized governments the demand for cement in this great southern area promises substantial growth.

The concept of vertical pit mining has been developed as an alternative mining method for the exploitation from surface of small, vertical or near-vertical, massive orebodies down to depths of some 200 m, where ore extraction from conventional open pit excavations is rendered uneconomic due to high associated waste:ore mining ratio. Systematic lateral support maintains vertical pit sides, thereby minimising waste mining volumes. Stability analysis techniques have been developed for design of this lateral support, with the support quantum, primarily comprising long cable anchors, dependent upon country rock strength characteristics and pit configuration. Where the cost of support is less than the cost of the comparable conventional pit waste excavation, vertical pit mining becomes an economically viable alternative, additionally providing the benefit of reduced environmental impact and rehabilitation requirements for the mining area. The technique has been successfully applied for the mining of a chrome deposit in Zimbabwe to an 80 m depth, believed to be unique in the world, and a full feasibilty study for a 3000 m2 diamond pipe has been carried out for mining to 200 m depth.

Traditionally, mineral processing plants are designed to achieve the highest recovery of valuable material with limited regard for the cost of managing waste products-both solid and water components. As an industry, we are confronting ever more stringent environmental standards and lower grade deposits requiring more intensive processing. The most profitable processing route can, in fact, lead to costly issues downstream. Issues or risks associated with waste management include water treatment and handling and storage of potentially acid generating material. The capital and operating costs of dealing with these issues are significant and should be considered as a consequence of plant design and optimisation. The authors of this paper are involved with a number of projects where process operation changes offer opportunities to mitigate risks associated with water and waste management. Examples of these changes will be discussed along with the estimated benefits to the value of the project and reduction of long-term environmental risks. Process changes include 1) the application of in-plant water treatment as opposed to dealing with the entire tailings management facility and 2) the potential to reduce metal leaching and acid rock drainage through the preferential liberation of carbonate minerals in the grinding process.

Much has been published in recent years on the challenges facing the engineer of the 21st century and the consequent challenges facing the education providers and industry. The world is changing rapidly on the social, economic, political, technical and environmental fronts and our metallurgists/mineral processing engineers of the future will arguably need to have a different set of skills than those which were traditionally regarded as adequate during the latter half of the 20th century. This paper attempts to explore some of these issues and their ramifications.

Este novo produto tem como característica o ciclo de recozimento com velocidade alta para obtenção de microestrutura 100% encruada na saída do equipamento e limites de escoamento e resistência acima de 500 MPa. A combinação dessas características do produto junto com as características do processo tornou a especificação “ASTM-A653MSS80CL1” um grande desafio para garantir qualidade superficial sem comprometer as propriedades mecânicas especificadas assim como a integridade do equipamento. Mineral extraction is facing the twin challenges of finite resources and increasing environmental and economic costs. Society’s growth is matched by an increase in demand for the earth’s resources. It is incumbent on us as contemporary mining professionals to promote and facilitate ethical and efficient practices. Technological developments have and will continue to allow a decrease in viable cut-off grades, creating new economic opportunities from deposits that were previously uneconomic. Mining low-grade deposits however, even with perfect recoveries, will have a significant environmental cost for the metal won. The greatest opportunity to increase metal with the least environmental cost is to increase the metal yield from existing mines. The determination of mining polygons is a critical juncture where rock is typically subjected to the binary grading of either ore or waste. This is undertaken using a number of factors, such as the mining equipment being used and the recovery in the processing plant. Traditionally, mining polygons were generated on the in situ grade control model. This ignores the complex differential blast dynamics that occur during blasting. Two opportunities exist to improve metal yields: optimise the blast design to achieve the post-blast muck pile that will support the greatest outcome; and generate optimised polygons on the post-blast muck pile. A data set from a Canadian Gold deposit is used to demonstrate the potential benefit of iterative blast movement modelling and grade control polygon optimisation on metal yield. The impact of blasting on the total recoverable metal is presented, highlighting blast design as a critical process in the mining value chain.

"It is difficult to quantify comparatively the gassiness of a property. The most common index to gassiness, cubic feet of gas per ton of coal mined, is very arbitrary and does not take into account the geological setting nor the mining operation. The gassiness of a virgin coal in situ can be assessed, but no method is precise and the most accurate methods involve prolonged field and laboratory experiments. In general, gassiness increases with depth. Whereas 'gas' normally implies methane, other gases such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc. may be present in seam gas also. The inflammability of methane is a problem, particularly the explosibility of a methane-air mixture; also oxygen dilution is involved in high gas concentrations and some gases are poisonous even in low concentrations. Cross measuring into a virgin seam is usually not as troublesome as development in the seam, where narrow openings may require strong ventilation to dilute gases exuding from the face and sides. Total extraction presents problems of gas from the working seam, or from adjacent seams, particularly at the return side, or of gas-laden air from the goaf streaming out or sometimes surging out intermittently, again on the return side. In pillar extraction or longwall retreating special roadways may be required to allow the side-to-side and end-to-end flushing of the goaf which is somewhat inherent in longwall advancing. Layering may occur, particularly where ventilation conditions are not brisk. Outbursts of gas from adjoining seams may be induced by sudden rupture of roof or floor in caving workings. Outbursts of coal and gas from the working seam may occur, mostly in development work, under special environmental circumstances. Gas problems may be reduced or eliminated by predrainage of gas ....:. rarely successful from the working seam - usually undertaken from adjoining seams prior to escape of gas released by caving. The ideal solution - general predrainage of gas to the surface from measures prior to mining - has yet to be accomplished. • In the planning of gassy mines it is possible to make an assessment of gas contained in the seams and to estimate what proportion will be released into the mine air, but emission of gas into mine workings is never steady and at present there is no better planning criterion than experience at the mine next door!"

Intermittent coal mining has been conducted in Alaska for over a century. The first report of coal in Alaska was by the Veechy expedition of 1826 and 1827. Whaling ships used coal from Corwin Bluff near Cape Beaufort during the early and latter parts of the 19th century. The first coal mine in Alaska -- and probably the oldest in the Pacific coast of North America -- was opened by the Russians at Port Graham on the southwest tip of the Kenai Peninsula. The mine was operated from 1855 until 1867 when the United States took possession of Alaska. From 1880 to 1915 coal mining was carried on intermittently at several localities including Unga Island, Herendeen Bay, Chignik Bay, Kachemak Bay, and several points along the Yukon River. Small coal mines along the Yukon River provided fuel for the river steamers traveling from St. Michaels to Whitehorse. The area of sustained coal production began with the completion of the Alaskan Railroad from Anchorage to the Matanuska coal field in 1916 and to the Nenana field in 1918. Coal production continued to increase until 1953, at which time the oil and gas fields in Cook Inlet were developed. Oil and gas eventually replaced- the Matanuska coal as a means of providing heat and power. The military in the Anchorage area shifted from coal to oil in 1967 causing a decrease in production. The increased demand for electric power in the Fairbanks area offset the decline and coal production started to increase. In 1969-1970 the Golden Valley Electric Association constructed a mine-mouth power plant 70 miles southwest of Fairbanks near Healy and a power line to Fairbanks. LOCATION OF COALS IN ALASKA Coals are found in all geographical subdivisions of Alaska. Coal in Alaska ranges in age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grade from lignite through anthracite. Figure 1 shows the locations of Alaskan coal fields. The only fields that have been developed extensively are the Matanuska and Nenana. Figure 2
