In June 1997, Mount Polley Mining Corp., a division of Imperial Metals Corp., completed an 18-kt/d (20,000 stpd) gold-copper mine in central British Columbia. Fast-track construction and extensive off-site construction were combined with an aggressive project schedule to build the mine in one year. This was three months ahead of schedule and 7% below the original budgeted cost of C$123.5 million (US$86 million). The Mount Polley Mine was the first of a crop of new open-pit mines in British Columbia. The Mount Polley deposit has been explored since the mid-1960s when it was known as the Cariboo Bell property. From 1988, Imperial Metals completed drilling and metallurgical testing on the deposit. This led to a positive feasibility study and the issuing of a Mine Development Certificate in 1991. The project was later shelved due to falling metals prices and the strength of the Canadian dollar. In late 1994, Imperial merged with Bethlehem Resources Corp., bringing a strong project team to the company. The deposit was then re-evaluated, ore reserves revised and additional metallurgical testing was performed. The result was a revised project plan. It indi¬cated that a financially feasible gold-copper mining op¬eration could be constructed at Mount Polley operat¬ing at 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd). In May 1996, an agreement was reached with Sumitomo to jointly fund and develop the project. By early 1996, final plans and permits were being prepared for construction, scheduled to begin in June 1.996. On-site work commenced on May 28th, 1996 following lifting of the road restrictions. Mount Polley Mining acted as its own project manager. Construction was completed in June 1997. Plant runup took place in July and full production began in August. Through the use of off-site construction and the careful selection of contractors who cooperated to complete some 12 major contracts, it was possible to reduce the mine and mill construction time from 16 to 13 months. Off-site construction for all possible aspects of the work and the use of used milling equipment allowed significant savings in overall capital costs of construction. Total costs for the mine, mill and tailings dam equated to C$6,100/t/d of throughput. The mill design incorporates several innovative features that will aid maintenance and allow flexibility of operation. The operation is designed as a closed system and meets the latest environmental standards. Concentrate is shipped by truck to the port of Vancouver. Revenues for the mine come from the mine's production of about 3.1 t/a (100,000 oz/year) of gold and 10.8 kt/a (24 million lbs/year) of copper during the first four years of the 12-year mine life.

Open pit mining, always a demanding task, faces two relatively new problems today: 1. Availability of equipment. Moderate to large draglines can take as long as 6 years from date of contract to date of operation. 2. Environmental restrictions. Strip mining in the minds of environmentalists compares unfavorably on the scale of social desirability to the activities of Jack the Ripper and Attila the Hun. Specifically, lowering of the water table to allow strip mining in the dry is being looked upon with increasing disfavor. The modern dredge offers relief in both problem areas. Delivery on a major dredge might run 18-24 months rather than 60; and lowering of the water table is precluded, thus minimizing environmental objections. In addition, a lower first cost and potentially increased efficiency may offer real advantages to the miner who is forced away from his traditional mining methods. This talk is dedicated to acquainting the miner with dredge types, advantages, and limitations.

THE subject of the constitution of copper-iron mattes has received considerable attention in recent years by Keller,1 Bolles,2 Hofman,3 and Gibb and Philp.4 Still more recently Friedrich, Röntgen, Wiedmann, Heyn and Bauer, and Leroux have published, in some instances, elaborate researches on the various systems of the sulphides, and the sulphides and their respective metals, which enter into the constitution of mattes, and have added very greatly to the knowledge of the subject. The work of Friedrich has been especially fruitful. But to date no effort has been made to correlate the data obtained in the latter researches and apply then to the study of the product called " matte," which is made in such large quantities by copper and lead-smelters. In this paper we propose to determine, by metallographic and chemical means, the constitution of copper-iron and copper-lead mattes in the light of the recent data above mentioned. We do not discuss copper-nickel mattes or speisses (artificial arsenides). The paper is divided into three sections I. A review and discussion of the various binary systems of the metallic, sulphides, and the binary systems of various metals and their respective sulphides entering into the constitution of mattes; also a discussion of the physical and chemical properties of these sulphides. II. A description of the results obtained from the chemical and metallographic examinations of the samples of copper-iron and copper-lead-iron matte obtained from various plants.

"INTRODUCTION In 1990, the uranium production of SDAG Wismut in East Germany was stopped. 45 years of inconsiderate destructive exploitation had scarred both landscape and nature. With the “Wismut law” which came into force in December 1991, the Federal Republic took responsibility of the remediation of the legacies from former uranium ore mining and milling in Saxony and Thuringia. A unique opportunity turned out in order to remove environmental damage, to enhance the life quality of the local population, to shape new landscapes and to advance the economic restart. (1) The results of nearly 25 years of remediation activity are evidence that this opportunity was used at all former SDAG (Sowjetisch-Deutsche Aktien-gesellschaft) Wismut sites. The reference project “Wismut“ has evolved into a joint project of all parties involved and radiates beyond the affected regions. This is particularly reflected by the Know-how transfer starting from Wismut and the increasing activities for third parties abroad.WATER MANAGEMENT AT WISMUT REHABILITATION Within the Wismut project, water management and conventional technical water treatment are by far the most cost-intensive long-term tasks of the remediation programme. Over the medium term, there is no viable alternative to the operation of active systems to catch and treat contaminated mine waters at the Ronneburg, Schlema, Königstein, Pöhla, Seelingstädt and Helmsdorf sites. Based on the status quo, this paper outlines the key issues of the Wismut GmbH water management strategy over the medium and long term. It is focused primarily on achieving protection goals for potentially impacted water bodies in the surroundings of Wismut sites and on optimising associated remediation expenditures as well as on creating the prerequisites for achieving low post-remedial care and maintenance or walk-away system status over the long term. (2) The applied mining practices during the active SDAG Wismut period have not been up to the high standards of modern mining operations and their requirement to leave former production premises and deposited residues in a condition that was not only physically but also chemically stable. Rather the emission of mine and seepage waters laden with high acidity, metal and salt content is a frequent corollary and difficult legacy of historic mining and processing operations (4, 5). As a consequence, the control or mitigation, respectively, of environmental impacts associated with contaminated mine waters ties up enormous public resources worldwide (6, 7)."

The aim of the present study was to determine the thermal oxidative behavior of materials used in coal mines, with emphasis on the type and relative concentration of the products, in particular the toxic species formed. To supplement this work and to gain understanding as to the type of products possibly formed and also to assess the limitations and advantages of the various analytical methods used a literature survey of the past investigations performed on the compositions of direct interest to the subject program was conducted. The compositions thus covered were cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, neoprene, urethanes, polyamides, polyesters, polyethylene, epoxy, phenoxy, urea-formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde resins. The results of this review are compiled in the Appendix. The experimental work consisted of thermal oxidative degradation of 36 materials and 4 composites using a stagnation burner apparatus developed in these laboratories which affords a dynamic system approximating somewhat the conditions encountered in underground coal mines. This technique as employed during this program gave only the relative product concentration at specific periods of the decomposition process, The advantage of this approach is that in this manner screening of materials can be accomplished in conjunction with some assessment of the decomposition rate as influenced by temperature and material composition. Limited static tests were performed using a sealed tube method. The materials studied were grouped according to their compositions. The following were the main groups: (a) polyvinyl chloride-containing materials, (b) neoprene compositions, (c) rigid foams (urethanes, isocyanates), (d) miscellaneous materials (including jute, fiberglass, polyethylene and some articles of unknown composition), (e) coal and fluids (phosphate esters, organic esters, oil-water emulsions), and finally (J) composites. The latter comprised a mixture of a phosphate ester fluid with (a) coal, (b) a representative polyvinyl chloride sample, and (c) a neoprene type composition.

The traditional method for training personnel in the mining and other heavy industries has been face-to-face, either via a lecturer in a classroom or through an apprenticeship. With the advent of applications tools such as video, computers, and the Internet, however, a much broader range of training delivery methods is available. Especially exciting are the broad capabilities of multimedia packages that combine the best features of numerous delivery methods. Applying multimedia environments in training holds great potential, especially when there is considerable difficulty in reconstructing real training environments. The authors discuss various delivery methods currently used in training employees, including perceived advantages and disadvantages of those methods. The authors then discuss and evaluate current computer-based training efforts of the mining industry and present an example of a multimedia training tool.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Two sin-diameter 6x25 fiber core (FC) ropes were degraded on a bending fatigue machine, These were the second and third ropes in a series of tests on this construction and size rope. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope to determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that once a wire rope nears the end of its service life, both deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength begin to increase at an accelerated rate.

The titanium industry is based on the unique properties of titanium dioxide and titanium metal. Because of its whiteness, high refractive index and resulting light scattering ability, titanium dioxide in its two main allotropic forms, rutile and anatase, is the predominant white pigment for paints, paper, plastics, rubber, and various other materials. Titanium metal, because of its high strength/weight ratio and resistance to corrosion, is widely used for aircraft, both in airframes and engines, for powerplant surface condensers, and a wide variety of chemical processing and handling equipment. U.S. production of titanium dioxide pigment in 1979 was about 658,000 tons - 2/, valued at about $770 million. Net shipments of titanium mill products were around 19,000 tons, worth about $380 million. These two major uses account for over 96% of domestic titanium consumption. The third largest application, the use of rutile for coating welding rods, required about 9,500 tons of rutile concentrate, worth about $4 million. Other applications of titanium-bearing raw materials include the manufacture of titanium carbides, ceramics, and chemicals, and the recently developed use of ilmenite as a substitute for barite in well-drilling muds.

Reduced access to knowledgeable workers is creating challenges for operations. We are doing more 4D Operations - dirty, dull, dangerous, and distant. Personnel costs in these environments are high, and it is not always possible to get the people where you need them. Integrated Operations is a strategy to integrate people, process, and technology for faster and better decision making. Adopting an integrated operations approach can help to relocate personnel, improve collaboration, and align objectives to deliver reduced costs and improved performance. In this paper, the authors will highlight the required infrastructure to enable an Integrated Operations platform. Key decision points for enabling this technology for both Greenfield projects and existing mines will be discussed. Furthermore, the benefits and improved return on investment that result from deployment of an Integrated Operations strategy will be presented.

As part of the AMIRA P843 project Keeney and Walters (2008) describe how the principal components analysis (PCA) method can be used to identify classes of samples with similar metallurgical characteristics. However PCA does not take account of the location of each sample in 3D space. This paper describes a study to analyse the spatial distributions of the classes and determine appropriate modelling methods to control the estimation of the comminution parameters and mill performance indices into a 3D block model. This includes but is not restricted to geostatistical techniques that are used for grade modelling. The starting point for the study is the class definitions and the regression models for estimating the comminution parameters and performance indices. Each sample is assigned a class and the spatial distribution of each class has been analysed using different techniques including the calculation of variograms. This establishes whether the classes can be used as domain control for estimation into the block model – a procedure similar to using geological rock type domains for controlling the estimation of grades for a resource model. However, standard geostatistical estimation methods such as ordinary kriging assume that the variable being estimated is additive or linear. This assumption is valid for variables such as grade but this is not necessarily the case for the comminution parameters or the performance indices. Therefore the estimation procedure must either use variables that are definitely additive or the effect of potential non-additivity must be tested and accounted for where possible.The results of the study show how performance indices such as recovery, throughput and specific power can be estimated into the block model. This model is then combined with the geological model to provide a multi-parametric model that is used to optimise the mine planning and scheduling activities which can lead to significant improvements in NPV.

Continuous processing plants handling liquids have achieved a high degree of centralized automatic control. Many chemical plants are operated from one room, with automatic control of the various process flow rates. These plants know from experience that automatic control can produce higher through-put, better uniformity of product, decreased operating costs and reduction of storage capacity, Plants which process materials in the form of bulk solids have not been able to use control to as great an extent, primarily due to the lack of measuring equipment capable of providing the same types of continuous automatic control available with liquid flow meters. This paper will describe a scale for measuring flows of bulk materials on conveyor belts which is particularly adaptable to remote centralized instrumentation and automatic control, and will also describe some typical control applications. Fig. 1 illustrates the basic method of measurement of this scale. A conveyor belt idler is supported on a rigid carriage which in turn is mounted in two anti- friction bearings on the conveyor stringers. The pivoted carriage is prevented from rotating about the pivot shaft by an electric strain gauge load cell connected between the carriage and a cross support. Increasing load on the conveyor belt increases the moment of the carriage frame about the pivot shaft, and proportionally increases the tension in the load cell. The belt speed is measured by a conventional d. c. tachometer generator driven from a pulley, usually on the return belt. The speed signal from the tachometer generator and the load signal from the load cell are combined to produce a signal proportional to the flow rate of material in tons per hour, or lbs. per foot, or equivalent units, It will be important to remember, in considering various control applications, that the flow rate of material on the belt is composed of these two component signals, namely the weight of material and the speed at which it is moving. The feed rate is then indicated and recorded by a self-balancing potentiometer of the type used for measuring temperature by means of thermocouples. These instruments may also be equipped with integrating mechanisms reading the totalized tonnage over a period of time.

Fluid flow properties of porous media have long been of interest in such varied disciplines as geology, geophysics, soil mechanics, and chemical, civil, and mechanical engineering. This interest has resulted in numerous models of porous media that have been proposed, tested, and found to be useful under, at best, only special circumstances. A critical review of most of these models is given by Scheidegger. 1 The application of each new tool to the study of porous media has helped to test some of the existing theories and to form new ideas based on the new parameters being measured. In the application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to the study of the properties of fluids in porous media, the theoretical studies of Korringa et al.2 resulted in a model for the relaxation of spin polarization of protons in a hydrogenous fluid in a pore of a solid. Seevers3,4 verified this model, established a method for measuring the surface-to-volume-ratio distribution in a porous medium, and proposed a technique for determining specific permeability in sandstones. In the present investigation, the uses of NMR methods are extended and a simple model of porous media is developed from an analysis of pulsed NMR measurements. In this model, the pore spaces of a porous medium are divided into three groups on the basis of their surface-to-volume ratios. To evaluate predictions of the NMR model, laboratory measurements of spin-lattice relaxation time, porosity, permeability, and residual (irreducible) water saturation were conducted on more than 150 sandstone samples obtained from four oil fields in North America. Applications are discussed for estimating the volume of movable fluid, ?p, and the specific permeability, k, of sandstone samples. The former parameter, which can be considered as producible porosity, is expressed by ?p = [1 -- (Swr/100)]? , .... (1) where + is porosity in percent of bulk volume and Swr is the residual (irreducible) water saturation in percent of pore volume at a capillary pressure of 50 Psi. Fast, nondestructive laboratory methods are described for determining porosity, movable fluid, and permeability of sandstone samples from measurements with a pulsed NMR (spin-echo) apparatus. Procedures are given for adapting these methods to samples of irregular shape and small size. Theory General In the Korringa, Seevers, and Torrey2 (KST) model the observed decrease in the spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, of protons of a hydrogenous liquid contained in the pore spaces of a porous solid is attributed to an increase in the correlation time for the random motion of the water molecules and to the presence of paramagnetic centers at the liquid-solid interface. The Karara Mine concentrator commenced operation in November 2012 to produce high-grade magnetite concentrate. The circuit consists of three stages of comminution plus magnetic separation at each stage for early gangue rejection. High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) are used for fine crushing, followed by ball mills and TowerMills in secondary and fine grinding duties respectively. In recent times, the plant throughput rate has had to exceed design by 18% to maintain the targeted concentrate productivity. Meanwhile, the ore hardness has increased by 25% to 15 kWh/t, leading to changes in the circuit operation and design. These changes led to coarser and harder feed to the TowerMill circuit that affects the subsequent separation processes. Nippon Eirich (the TowerMill manufacturer) has partnered with Karara Mining Limited (Karara) to optimise the TowerMill circuit operation to achieve a circuit product with an 80% passing (P80) of 35 µm. Several activities, including a TowerMill circuit audit and performance evaluation, multi-component analysis, modelling and simulation, were carried out as part of the optimisation exercise. The circuit audit results revealed that the TowerMill circuit feed size F80 had increased and ranged from 67–75 µm. The circuit product P80 ranged between 42–55 µm. The average circuit specific energy was 3.4 kWh/t. Moreover, the differences in density between magnetite and gangue minerals had affected the hydrocyclone performance where the efficiency curve exhibits coarse end deflection indicating that low-density coarse material was bypassing to the overflow stream. A multi-component analysis was carried out to further investigate the coarse end deflection of the hydrocyclone efficiency curve. The analysis showed that the magnetite and gangue minerals had different cut sizes of 32 and 64 µm respectively. Furthermore, 33% of the magnetite (below 35 µm) was being recycled back to the mill due to the density effect. Based on these findings, several recommendations for process improvement were identified and implemented including:• converting to a bottom feeding configuration to improve the grinding efficiency in the mill• additional grinding power in the fine grinding duty to compensate for the increase in plant throughput and ore hardness• improved classification efficiency by converting to smaller size hydrocyclones. Simulation studies carried out to evaluate the impact of these implementations had indicated that a P80 close to 35 µm with a steeper size distribution could be achieved by using the bottom feed configuration with additional grinding power. The TowerMill circuit was converted to bottom feed configuration and the performance was evaluated. The operating work index, size specific energy and circulating load were 30% lower than the top feed configuration, indicating that the bottom feed configuration had a higher grinding efficiency. This paper discusses the outcome of the circuit audit, multicomponent analysis, circuit simulations, improvement strategies and quantification of the improvements. The health and financial costs of cumulative injuries are plaguing the mining industry. Industry leaders are concentrating on reducing the risk of injury to their workers through design and redesign of work environments. While ergonomics is not a currently regulated field, many mines are realizing that the only way to tackle their most costly injuries, cumulative injuries, is to make the proactive choice to understand those injuries, their root causes and to make workplace changes to prevent them from occurring. Reduction of these injuries not only improves the health and morale of the workers but increases productivity and profit for the companies. Knowledge and reporting of ergonomic risk factors by employees and ergonomics committees is key to these changes and to the reduction of cumulative injuries. NIOSH is developing strong relationships with industry associations and equipment manufacturers to leverage their communication abilities to transfer knowledge to their customers and make a difference in the health and safety of U.S. miners. The benefits of a formalized approach to reducing these injuries along with examples will be presented.

Este trabalho descreve a implantação do sistema IBA na fábrica de tubos sem costura da VSB, a mais nova e mais automatizada do país. O trabalho destaca os bons resultados alcançados utilizando o IBA como ferramenta de manutenção e da inovadora visão do IBA na VSB, aonde rompeu as fronteiras da manutenção e atingiu as áreas de produção, desenvolvimento técnico e qualidade. A implementação do IBA na VSB teve grande relevância para a eficiência do comissionamento e start-up da fábrica de tubos. A capacidade de aquisição de dados em alta velocidade associada às diversas funcionalidades de análise de dados propiciaram meios de aprendizado sobre o processo, identificação rápida de problemas e difusão de conhecimento. Todavia, na VSB, a ferramenta extrapolou os limites da manutenção e alcançou funcionalidades também nas áreas de qualidade, produção e desenvolvimento técnico. Outra funcionalidade desenvolvida pela VSB no IBA foi a capacidade de analisar oscilações de variáveis de processo ao longo do comprimento dos tubos produzidos e não só ao longo do tempo, como usualmente é feito. A capacidade do IBA PDA na aquisição rápida de dados possibilitou fazer ajustes finos nos tempos de ciclo de cada equipamento, deixando a medição mais elaborada e precisa, auxiliando a identificação dos locais que são gargalos de produção. A possibilidade de visualizar, com resolução de milissegundos, os eventos que ocorrem ao longo do tempo, ajudou a reduzir o tempo de análise e correção de falhas.

"The expansion rate and collapse time of liquid aluminum foams are essential for the determination of operating time and quality of the resulting foam. In the present paper, liquid aluminum foams was fabricated by adding in TiH2 as blowing agent, and the variation of expansion rate with foaming time was non-contact detected by a laser distance measurer. The influence of different stabilizing agent and alloying elements was studied. The results show the fact that the fraction of stabilizing agent only perform little effects on the maximum expansion rate of liquid aluminum foams, while the influence of alloy elements are remarkable. The maximum expansion rate would increase much when Mg is added, and the liquid foam also collapse at a shorter time. Comparison was made between experimental results and mathematic calculations, which reveal the fact that it is the change of TiH2 decomposition responsible for the change.IntroductionMetal foams, combining light weight with other unique mechanical and physical properties, have gained wide interest and been developing fast during past few decades. However, manufacture of this new material is quite challenging since it involves simultaneous occurrence of gas, liquid and solid phase at high temperature [1-2].Quite some manufacture routes have been developed for manufacturing metal foams, and the structure and quality of resulting foam are remarkably improved during the last decades. However, most of the past works seems to be experiential, and because the lack of basic knowledge of foaming process, the start material is limited and the production technologies are far from reliable and reproducible.[3-4]In direct foaming process, decomposition of blowing agents, TiH2 for example, is the main force for foam expansion. The density and foam structure changes with time during the foaming process, so it is expected that foams of certain structure can be obtained by solidification of the liquid foam at a certain time [5-6]. However, the foaming process is weak in reproducibility and the influence of stabilization additives and alloying elements is unclear."

Ground control research for underground coal mining has progressed significantly over the past several decades. With this progression, and the ability to analyze and model underground conditions, underground working conditions have significantly improved. In order to progress further, the behavior of roof support must be known and be adequately modeled, such that models can be used for support design under different geological and mining conditions. This paper discusses the results from a research project funded by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and undertaken by Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Peabody Energy. The research involved installation of active and passive instrumented bolts in mines, recording relevant in situ data and then attempting to model the behavior of the bolts as mining progressed. Such calibrated models could aid in design of roof supports under different geological and mining layouts and thus, hopefully, further improve rock related safety.

FLOTATION practice in Idaho is now about 13 years old. The advance has been steady during these 13 years. The operators have been alert to take advantage of the newest developments and they have themselves made a constant effort to improve their work. The metallurgical improvements are due to the development of (1) better equipment, (2) better reagents, and (3) better understanding and control of the process. During the eight years the writer has been in this district, there has been continuous experimentation by several companies to improve the ore dressing by flotation methods. Gravity concentration has fought hard to hold its place, and although it is true that gravity processes have been improved during this period, nevertheless, in several of the important mills of the district the few tables that managed to hang on have finally given way. On the straight-lead ores, tables and jigs are still used; and, due to better classification, their hold on this job has been strengthened. ORES OF THE DISTRICT The ores of the district are of two general classes: (1) clean lead ores, such as those from the Bunker Hill and Hecla mines, and (2) complex lead-zinc ores. The general impression prevails that the clean lead ores, class 1, are simple and that it is easy to obtain high recoveries and good grade products. This, in a way, is a false impression; there is quite a high percentage of locked middling in these ores at 100 and 150-mesh sizes. Improved classification preparatory to table treatment of this type of ore has made it possible to segregate effectively a high-grade middling which is further comminuted and floated. The complex lead-zinc ores of the district, of which the ore from the Morning mine of the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. is a typical example, always have presented a difficult problem. It always has been comparatively easy to make a clean lead concentrate, but it never has been possible to concentrate sphalerite with a-specific gravity of 4.10 from siderite of gravity 3.88.
