The New Orient mine, owned and operated by the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., has caused a great deal of comment and interest because of its unusual features and huge daily production. It is in Franklin County, Illinois, adjacent to the town of West Frankfort. The seam being mined is the Illinois No. 6 which in this locality is 9 to 12 ft. thick and lies approximately 500 ft. below the surface. Without fear of contradiction, it can be said that this is one of the largest coal mines in the world from a daily production standpoint. During 1928, New Orient produced 2,400,000 tons, which amounts to over 10,000 tons each day the mine operated that year. The mine is built for a capacity of 12,000 tons but has actually hoisted over 15,000 tons in one 8-hr, shift. This enormous production can perhaps be better visualized if it is realized that each day's operation depletes over two acres of coal. The general features of this mine have already been fully covered in a paper by George B. Harrington,' President of the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co. In a paper of the nature of Mr. Harrington's, it was unnecessary to stress any particular phase of mining conditions, consequently the ventilation problems were touched upon but lightly. In this paper an attempt has been made to describe some of the problems which have been encountered in providing adequate ventilation for the mine. Ventilating Conditions The acreage allotted to New Orient mine has a length, north and south, of approximately 6 miles, and a width, east and west, of 2 to 4 miles. A number of important considerations caused the hoist shaft, air shaft and surface plant to be located near the southeast corner of the property, instead of near the center, as is usual. During the initial phase of the mine development, the mine was ventilated through these shafts, although there was a full realization that at some future date other shafts would be required.

"Drillhole placement involves benefits, costs, and constraints. Benefits are related to the drilling campaign value, which includes maximizing “indicated” and “measured” resources. Costs include drilling, rig movement, and access construction. Constraints include infeasible areas, maximum and minimum angles of drilling, maximum depth of drilling, and budget. Manually planning drillholes that meet these constraints is suboptimal. A framework for straight drillhole optimization that accounts for benefits, costs, and constraints is presented. The method aims to maximize the value of resources converted from “inferred” to indicated and measured. The framework is demonstrated for a Nevada gold deposit and outperforms manually selected drillholes.RÉSUMÉ Le choix de l’emplacement d’un trou de forage s’accompagne d’avantages, de coûts et de contraintes. Les avantages sont liés à la valeur d’une campagne de forage, qui comprend l’optimisation des ressources « indiquées » et « mesurées ». INTRODUCTIONDetermining the optimum location of infill drilling has been studied because the high cost of drilling suggests that using fewer drillholes is preferred, and targeting locations of the deposit that are locally uncertain should result in better mine planning decisions and increased profit of the operation. Existing methods for optimizing drillhole locations consider minimizing the kriging variance (KV) as the objective and are mostly restricted to two dimensions (Soltani-Mohammadi & Hezarkhari, 2013a, b; Soltani- Mohammadi, Safa, & Mokhtari, 2016)."

Boron, estimated to comprise about 0.001 percent of the earth's crust (Fleischer 10), as an element is never found free in nature, although its compounds are found in many localities. the borates are the most important. Sassolite (B(OH)3) and boracite (Mg6C12B1406), non-borates, are-of-minor importance. The crystal structures of most natural borates are still unknown. A classification based solely on the ratio of boron to the total number of cations has been devised (Palache 28). This classification divides the borates into four, sub-groups; anhydrous borates, hydrated borates, borates containing hydroxyl or halogen and compound borates. Only four or five minerals of the hydrated borates group have ever been used commercially. In more recent years, the sodium borates have comprised all but a 'small fraction of all borates used. Borax, the hydrated borate compound, is the most important of all boron compounds. It has been used so long and so often that the layman often confuses borax and boron and, applies the terms synonymously.

Belle Ayr Mine was established in 1972 as the first large surface coal mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. During the mid-1980s, it was eventually out-distanced in productivity by newer mines, and management recognized that the mine must recapitalize its major mining equipment and enhance its workforce flexibility in order to be competitive in the deteriorating market situation. Therefore, state-of-the-art haulage and loading equipment was placed into service, and a 12-hour rotating shift and a technician-based workforce was implemented. Belle Ayr Mine is located 29 km (18 miles) southeast of Gillette, Wyoming, in Campbell County (Figure 1). The mine is a part of AMAX Coal West, Inc., and with its sister mine, Eagle Butte, located 8 km (5 miles) north of Gillette, is a major contributor to the overall coal production of AMAX Coal Industries, Inc., headquartered in Houston, Texas. This paper addresses mine planning, recapitalization initiatives, and innovative workforce changes which propelled this large, surface coal mine to the forefront of productivity in the ever tightening low sulphur coal market.

"INTRODUCTION The great demand for tungsten incident to the war has led to the exploration of a large number of low-grade tungsten deposits. To properly evaluate the low-grade deposits it is essential to have available a dependable method of analysis applicable to all types of low-grade tungsten ores. Results reported on the tungsten content of the ores have often varied quite widely and have led to confusion. The Bureau of Mines has been requested by Government lending agencies and by companies interested in the production of tungsten to publish a general method for the determination of tungsten in low-grade ores. To meet this need, the Bureau of Mines is herein submitting two methods for analysis that have been proved on a large number of tungsten-bearing ores various types in the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Salt Lake City. Also, a third method was developed that requires no cinchonine and has proved to be applicable on most tungsten ores. The cinchonine method is the generally accepted for analysis of tungsten ores. Very reliable results can be obtained by this method if certain precautions are taken, as outlined in this report."

"INTRODUCTION In the manufacture, storage, transportation, and use of combustible gases and vapors, explosion hazards, which at times may be present when air becomes mixed with the gases and vapors, become of primary importance. Such conditions are especially dangerous where large volumes of gaseous atmosphere are involved, because an explosion under such circumstances is capable of doing tremendous damage to both property and personnel.Because of its interest in safety in the mining and allied industries, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated, and published results dealing with, the explosibility of various types of combutible atmospheres. The explosion hazards of natural gases have received attention, and results giving the limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures in air have been determined and published. 4/ Other investigations have shown how explosions of natural gas-air mixtures may be prevented by the addition of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. 5/Because of the increased demand for crude oil for war purposes, the application of secondary-recovery methods of stimulating oil production have received considerable attention during the last few years. The process consists in the injection of natural gas into partly depleted oil wells to cause the oil in the sands to flow into producing wells and so increase the amount of recoverable oil. 6/"

The movement to reclaim abandoned mine sites has gained momentum as federal, state, and private organizations have increased their commitment and resources to tackle mutual, and often controversial, problems of health and safety. Numerous interorganizational agreements have been implemented to promote cooperation in the characterization of mine site hazards, development of mutually acceptable plans of remediation, and sharing of actual cleanup requirements. Working through these partnerships, the federal land management agencies have begun to focus on abandoned mine reclamation in selected, priority watersheds and other drainage basins. Although there are major difficulties to overcome, significant progress continues to be made.

ESTIMATED United States crude-oil production during 1943 established a new annual peak of 1,500,000,000 barrels, a daily average of 4,118,000 barrels. This would be an increase of 315,000 barrels per day, or 8 per cent over 1942 and 7 per cent over 1941, the previous peak. During the first ten months of the year, production jumped from 3,782,000 barrels per day in January to 4,400,000 in October. Available data for the last two months of the year indicate a leveling off of this trend, with daily rates slightly above 4,400,000 barrels.

In making this plea for a better and more sympathetic understanding of the non-metallic industry, I do not for one minute wish to give the impression that I in any way belittle the wonderful strides that have been made in the exploitation of our metallics. We in Canada can be justly proud of our Sudburys, Norandas, Flin Fions, and of the remarkable growth of the Consolidated in British Columbia, and at the same time, without in the !east detracting from these worthy undertakings, be equally as proud of our asbestos, gypsum, salt, and coal deposits, as well as of our building-stone and limestone industries. If, in my remarks, I have occasion to compare the metallic with the non-metallic industry, I do so, not with any idea of dimming the glory which the metallics of Canada have gained- not only in our own country, but in the world at large-but for the purpose? of bringing to your attention the fact, perhaps not very well recognized, that Canada contains deposits of non-metallics well worth y of your serious consideration. In the past 33 years, namely, since 1895, the value of non-metallics produced in Canada has exceeded the value of metallics in 19 of the years, and for the last three years has been increasing rapidly. The war years (1915-1918 inclusive) naturally saw an intensive metallic production, but since that time, with the exception of 1925, when there was a general depression throughout the whole country, the non-metallics have been in the ascendency.

"As one of the most typical additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, selective laser melting (SLM) removes many of the shape restrictions that limit materials design, thereby allowing computationally optimised and high performance structures to be directly produced and tested. Due to the high reflectivity and lower absorptivity of Al alloy A357 powder during high temperature laser melting, one of the issues SLM might bring is the surface roughness and defects present on the parts. In this regard, this study investigates the surface roughness – fatigue property relationship for a heat-treated aluminium alloy A357 after SLM. Via the adjustment of SLM parameters, an ultrafine microstructure can be obtained due to the fast solidification rate. Therefore, comparable or even better mechanical properties can be achieved with respect to traditional A357 casting counterparts. Meanwhile, the surface roughness conditions of the SLMed Al alloy are also influenced by various processing parameters, raw powder properties, and sample building methods. For selective laser melted Al alloy A357 specimens, a dense part with a smoother surface would be expected to correspond with a good fatigue performance.INTRODUCTION Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a process in which a complex part is fabricated layer by layer from a digital design package (Martin et al., 2017). AM has the potential to conserve raw materials, reduce the energy consumption, part cost, and fabrication time. Furthermore, as a typical additive manufacturing (AM) process, selective laser melting (SLM) was originally developed from selective laser sintering (SLS) based on higher quality lasers (Rao, Zhang, Fang, Chen, Wu, & Davies, 2017b). Different from conventional casting consuming valuable time and energy, SLM is now used as a cost effective method for the manufacturing of metals, such as Al-Si alloys, to produce almost full density parts using fine metallic powder and high power laser beam (Tang & Pistorius, 2017)."

An attempt has been made in this investigation to define the conditions under which ammonium nitrate (AN) might detonate as a result of involvement in fire. The initiation of detonation by shocks derived from explosives or from projectile impact was investigated as a function of temperature and charge diameter. A new technique was devised to investigate the burning of raw and contaminated AN under pressure. No transition, to detonation in AN was obtained in the burning experiments. The critical diameter for detonation of fertilizer-grade AN was found to be quite small when the AN was at temperatures just below melting point; this indicates that initiation of detonation may be less difficult at elevated temperatures but such initiation by gas-phase detonation was shown to be unlikely. Transition from burning to detonation was obtained with AN intimately mixed with fuels that included polyethyl-ene, paper, and fuel oil when these were contained in vessels with restricted vents. However, the experimental results supported by an analytical study indicate that the initiation of detonation in AN from fire exposure in normal storage and from transportation incidents is quite improbable. The detonation of AN in recent incidents more likely may have resulted from the effects of adjacent explosions.

In truck-based hauling systems, the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process. As such, underperformance of a haul road will impact immediately on mine productivity and costs. Operations safety, productivity and equipment longevity are all dependent on well-designed, constructed and maintained haul roads. With the advent of autonomous haul trucks, the haul road itself becomes all the more critical to the success of these type of operations; not only in relation to mine operators requirements for safer and more efficient and predictable haulage systems, but also in response to autonomous truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment. This paper presents a brief summary of the state-of-the-art in surface mine road design and then proceeds to examine the design and technological challenges associated providing a safe, predictable and affordable road for autonomous mine haul trucks. The paper serves as a basis for evaluating the contributions that enhancements in road design and management can deliver to autonomous mining operations, an initiative that also has scope for adoption within the operating life of many mines, haul roads and haul trucks.

The planning, construction, and monitoring of underground storage facilities is a key factor in meeting upcoming challenges as part of the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables. Therefore, the many years of knowledge and expertise in ground control gained from coal mining are highly valuable for new mining and storage operations. For such applications, our previous work examined cavity registration, combining structure from motion and LiDAR through a case study in a former lead ore mine. Building on this, the results of this recent case study are discussed regarding the possible application in sites for nuclear waste disposal in Germany including a view on the situation in the United States. Photogrammetric methods are particularly suitable as part of long-term monitoring, which relies on both precise survey results and a large variety of detailed visualization. In order to gain a better understanding of the resulting application potential for holistic monitoring, both existing repositories sites in Germany and ones yet to be found are examined. This search and selection process for high-level nuclear waste disposal is studied in detail together with rules resulting from the (German) mining law, regulations, and other guidelines. Hereby, key requirements of photogrammetric products like oriented images, point clouds, and three-dimensional (3- D) models are identified for different case studies. The findings on accuracy and integrity of the generated models are not only of interest for future repository sites or underground pumped storage power plants, but also offers various possibilities for underground mining of coal and other commodities.

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral. It has unique properties, which combined with its low cost, make it suitable for use in a wide variety of products. Kaolin is defined as "any of a group of clay minerals, including kaolinite, nacrite, dickite, and anauxite, with a two-layer crystal in which silicon-oxygen and aluminum-hydroxyl sheets alternate; approximate composition is AlZ03-ZSiOZ-1/ ZHZO".-The kaolin discussed here is composed chiefly of the mineral kaolinite. Kaolin is also commonly referred to as "china clay". Approximately 4.9 kkg (5.4 million short tons) of kaolin was sold or used in the United States, and .8 million kkg (.9 million short tons) was -exported in 1974. In domestic usage, paper coating and filling accounted for 43% of the total, fol-2/ lowed by refractories, rubber, and ceramics.-Figure 1 shows the amount of kaolin sold or used by domestic producers for specified uses for the years 1963-3/ 1973.- Kaolin was produced at mines in 14 states, but Georgia accounted for 75% of the 1974 domestic production. The average value for all grades was $36.00/kkg 4/ ($32. 67/ton) .-

In order that the use of continuous mining machines be most economic, the equipment must be operated at rated capacity as much of the time as possible and downtime for repairs kept at a minimum. A large factor influencing any proposals for maintenance programs is the complexity of the machines—often the intricacies of the precision-built equipment requires engineering knowledge byond the scope of mine maintenance personnel. A training program is part of the answer; there are others. In addition to investigating a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program, Mountaineer Coal Co. has launched a detailed preventive maintenance program to combat extensive downtime often encountered when continuous miners are used. Everyone in the coal industry knows the importance of operating continuous miners at their rated capacity as much of the time as possible. The potential capacity of the miner is such that l-min. delay means from 3 to 8 tons of coal lost. Today's miner is a well designed, precision-built machine, complicated with hydraulic and electrical equipment and complex mechanical assemblies with all possible combinations of gears, levers, and rods. As the machine becomes more complex, the problem of maintenance becomes more acute. The transition from conventional to continuous mining has taken place so rapidly that the mine mechanic has been unable to keep pace. When there is a machine failure, the maintenance man usually employs either the trial-and-error or the play -it-by-ear method of repair, but this represents an expensive proposition. Mine mechanics, maintenance superintendents, and mine managers complain about the complexity of the machines and how difficult it is to keep them running. There is no shortage of skill in the design offices. Machines are designed by good engineers, but for engineers. What's the answer? Better trained maintenance men—better maintenance instruction—better field service. These are all good corrective measures, but the real cure is to provide for the men at the do it level. Designers have got to cooperate with men to simplify maintenance on the increasingly complex machine. The designer must be aware of how his machine can be maintained. Sometimes a simple design change in a bearing, oil seal, or a bushing will correct recurrent breakdowns. Parts such as filters, hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and pivot pins can be better arranged on the machine to make them accessible so that the mine mechanic can easily keep the machine producing. Therefore, to get our maintenance off on the right foot, the program must begin back in the design office, before the machine is delivered to the mine property. Realizing the importance of this aspect, our company set out on a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program. This is a formal program in which quarterly reports are written covering machine defects, design weakness, and general problems relating to machine maintenance and performance. The manufacturer in turn comments on each and every item appearing in these reports, indicating the action he proposes to take. In addition to the written reply, meetings are scheduled with manufacturer representatives to discuss further the outlined problems. The benefits realized from this organized program are both substantial and far reaching. Good maintenance begins with a good design. The subject of preventive maintenance is not a new one. Volumes have already been written on the subject. It consists primarily of doing the maintenance work when you want to rather than when the machine demands it. However, a preventive maintenance program can be overdone. Theoretically, if carried to ridiculous extreme, all working time could be spent inspecting and repairing the machines and no time would be left for production output. Our goal in maintenance is to maximize running time for all machines, and to prevent or at least minimize production downtime. Cr-Ni-Cu¦PGE deposits are known to occur in early Archaean mafic-ultramafic rocks. Early Archaean mafic-ultramafic (MUMF) rocks occur in the western Dharwar craton and range in size from small pods to schist belts. These MUMF pods consist mainly of meta-peridotites, tremolite-actinolite schists, serpentinites, amphibolites and metabasalts. Spinifex, nodular and ocelli textures are also present. The rocks have been subjected to greenschist and amphibolite facies metamorphism. Geochemical studies were undertaken to evaluate the possible occurrence of economically important elements in the mafic-ultramafic enclaves around the major Arsikere-Tavarkere lineament and surrounding gneissic terrain adjoining local shear zones that occur as discontinuous pods between Arsikere and Chennagiri. Talc-serpentine and tremolite- actinolite schists contain chromite which is rimmed by ferrit-chromite. A notable feature of these MUMF rocks is that they exhibit high MgO (22 - 40 per cent), total iron (8.34 - 10.01 per cent), Ni and Cr (~3000, 2800 ppm) contents, with some samples showing komatiitic affinity. The rare earth elements (REE) data show slightly fractionated patterns with enriched LREE (LREE/HREE ~5.0) and negative europium anomalies. The Pt and Pd values reach 6500 and 191 ppb. The MUMF rocks, especially those exhibiting high chromium contents and occurring near shear zones, are potential hosts for economic platinum group element (PGE) deposits.

For the benefit of those who are not familiar with the history of the western Provinces-Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta-as regards our natural resources, a few words of explanation may be in order before taking up the consideration of the Mines Act of 1930. In 1867, The British North America Act was passed by the Imperial Parliament. That Act, which is our constitution, created a union between the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Upper and Lower Canada (now known as Ontario and Quebec respectively) under the name of the Dominion of Canada. Provision was made therein for embracing other parts of Canada from time to time. That portion of Canada which today comprises the Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta and the lands to the north of them, was then known as Ruperts Land and the North West Territory. In the year 1670, King Charles II had granted by Letters Patent to Prince Rupert and his associates, known as ?The Governor & Company of Gentlemen Adventurers of England, Trading into Hudson's Bay?, commonly known as the Hudson's Bay Company, the lands and territories therein described, being roughly all the lands adjacent to and west of Hudson's bay; also the gold and silver to be found or discovered therein and other rights as more fully described in said Letters Patent. The land so granted was called 'Ruperts Land'.

THE membership of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is composed largely of technicians, operating engineers, and executives in the mining, metallurgical and petroleum industries. The Institute also has its student, junior and associate membership and its Woman's Auxiliary. Primarily, it is a technical society, devoting itself largely to the encouragement of progress within the industries it represents, and to the discussion and dissemination of facts regarding this progress to its membership. The wisdom of this policy is reflected by the prestige and position which the society has gained, not only .among its members but throughout the entire mining world.

Abstract A discussion of the difficulties involved in the production of a clean molybdenite concentrate introduces the paper. There is a brief description of the various methods for producing molybdenite that will fit marketing specifications, and it is shown how these methods are nor suited to the milling of ores containing small quantities of bismuth and copper. A process that was developed in the ore testing laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Ottawa for the La Corne mill of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada is described in derail and some results from pilot plant operation of this milling scheme are tabulated. A description of the La Corne mill, where the writer supervised the introduction of the process on a commercial scale, adds to the interest of the paper. In conclusion, there is a review of the conditions necessary for proper operation of the flowsheet. An attempt is made to show how the process might be satisfactory in other problems similar to that at the La Corne mill. Introduction The production of a molybdenite concentrate, free from impurities and high in grade, has been a difficult task when milling some types of ore. Whereas ordinary flotation techniques will produce acceptable concentrates of the baser sulphides, in many cases they will not serve in the treatment of molybdenite, for this mineral must be of optimum grade and purity to bring the best prices, or to find a market at all . Faced with the necessity of meeting stringent specifications, the mill operator has been forced to employ expensive processing methods, and to be satisfied with low recoveries, in order to make grade with his product. The most objectionable and common impurities found with molybdenite are: (a) gangue minerals and iron sulphides, which lower the grade; and (b) copper, bismuth, or antimony, which are deleterious in the final uses of the molybdenite products. It is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to market a concentrate with over 0.5 per cent of any of the latter impurities, or with a grade much below 90 per cent MoS2. Various methods, which have been highly successful in specific applications, have been developed to meet the problem of producing a suitable concentrate. All of them, however, have certain defects precluding their use when treating ores of a nature different from the one for which they ? were designed. The writer has developed a process for molybdenite ores having an objectionable impurity content. A description of the procedure involved, and of the La Corne mill of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada, where the process has been adopted, should be of interest to flotation operators.
