The selection of a stripping method and subsequently, the stripping equipment, are two of the most important decisions confronting a project engineering staff during the initial feasibility study of a new coal stripping operation. The selected stripping units average from 60 to 70 percent of the total capital outlay for mine equipment and their selection will affect the type, size, and quantity of the attendant equipment, such as loading shovels, drills, haulage trucks, and bulldozers. This paper is intended to report on an in depth study by Utah's Technical Services Staff regarding the selection of stripping equipment for the Goonyella Coal Mine in Queensland, Australia. We will touch briefly, on the objectives considered in this selection; the various alternatives which were explored; the general assumptions that were followed throughout the engineering and design of an appropriate stripping system; and computations necessary to determine the amount and size of stripping equipment. INITIAL EXPLORATION Utah Development Company (presently 90% owned by Utah Construction & Mining Co. and 10% by Australian investors) commenced systematic geological studies of the Bowen Basin coal fields of Central Queensland in 1961. The Blackwater Mine as shown in Figure 1 has since been established in this area and is now producing 3.0 million tons per annum of washed coking coal. Geological reconnaissance was then extended to the northern part of the Bowen Basin and in 1963 Utah's coal prospecting area covered 2444 square miles of Central Queensland. The authority to prospect north of Blackwater has since been trimmed to 810 square miles by relinquishments to the State.

The Industrial Minerals Milling Section of the Mineral Processing Division has been engaged for the past three years in a study of the separation of minerals, by means of electronic sorting equipment, on the basis of their colour. Considerable knowledge of the subject has been built up. Because the object of this study is application as a means of beneficiation, a number of examples of the separations achieved are presented. Introduction T 0 the mineral collector, the colour of a mineral may be pleasing, even fascinating; to the mineralogist, student or professional, it may also be practical. It serves, to some extent, as a distinguishing feature in many minerals, and helps to fix with reasonable accuracy the identity of a few. It may now become a useful tool of the mineral dresser. The idea of using a difference in colour as a means of separation of one mineral from another is not new. Hand sorting dates back to ancient time. However, the means by which this can be done mechanically was developed only during the past decade. OHSAS 18001 is a series of international standards for occupational health and safety management. It is comprised of two parts, 18001 and 180029. OHSAS 18001 was formulated by international certifying bodies and is based on BS8800 and was first published in 19996,11. OHSAS 18001 was developed to be compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in order to facilitate integration of quality, environment, and occupational health and safety management systems5. It is a voluntary standard and the overall aim of OHSAS 18001 is to enable organizations to control their occupational health and safety (OH&S) risks and improve overall health and safety performance5. OHSAS 18001 is widely accepted in the UK, Europe, and Asia, is gaining momentum in North and South America, and it was used as the basis and conforms to the requirements of ANSI/AIHA Z.10-2005: American National Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It defines a set of requirements for an occupational health and safety management system suitable for any kind and size of organization4. Businesses of all sizes are developing and implementing occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) that are in compliance with the OHSAS 18001 standard.

This talk was delivered in Kalgoorlie in April this year, to the Kalgoorlie Branch of The Institution of Engineers, Australia. We believe it is of such interest to members of our Institute and readers of this publication we believe it important to extend the audience who have the opportunity to read it. An edited version follows:"Why should we be so concerned about Mining Related Education; after all is said and done, the mining industry is not a great employer of persons?"The mining industry is capital rather than labour intensive. It employs only 2.7 per cent of the national workforce. However; the minerals industry is Australia's major exporter accounting for over 40 per cent of the nation's total export of goods.In Western Australia the value of minerals production in 1985 was about $5,000 million and consequently mineral exports accounted for about 53 per cent of the total value of overseas exports from the State. The diversity of the mining industry is also worthy of mention and produces iron ore, alumina, gold, nickel and mineral sands. That apart, our potential to become a major producer of diamonds, rare earths and petroleum products is considerable, not to mention base metals (copper, lead and zinc) and uranium.Our mining industry is of national importance and contributes in excess of 30 per cent of the total value of Australian overseas trade. Although the mining ind ustry does not employ many people, the people it employs contribute very much more, per capita, to the wealth of the nation than do employees in any other sector of our economy.No-one would deny that during the 20th century Australians have depended on the export earnings from the sale of relatively unprocessed agricultural products and more recently the sale of relatively unprocessed minerals for their standard of living.Not surprisingly, therefore, our economy is highly vulnerable to unstable world commodity market prices.The slump in trade we are currently experiencing (in first quarter 1987-Edition) was brought about by the over supply of the raw materials we produce. However, the recent downturn in world market prices is more serious than previous slumps because in part it is due to technological advances 'in other countries which could have a permanent effect on the world trade of primary products.

In recent times sustainable minerals processing is an important topic in research. Sustainable mining is linked with efficient use of energy and human resource in all process stages including beneficiation of the ore. Controlling and optimizing the recovery while preserving the grade of the concentrate is extremely important in flotation plants. This development requires new technological solutions and has given rise to the multitude of application areas for lasers. X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) are currently two of the predominant non-contact and direct analysing methods in industry. LIBS and XRF measurement techniques both have high capabilities for measuring elements. LIBS has a very simple and easy-to-implement spectroscopic setup, wider range of elements can be detected with online LIBS and measuring light elements is simpler by LIBS compared with XRF. It is of great interest to extract mineralogical information from the elemental results with no modification on the measurement setup. In order to achieve this, more advanced interpretation of the elemental peaks of LIBS spectra is required. Therefore, the major focus of this research is about measuring mineral concentrations from the elemental lines of LIBS spectra using advanced statistical methods. This accomplishment provides knowledge about mineral concentrations from the real-time assay data of the slurry LIBS analyzer. Consequently, this paper first discusses an analytical method called partial least squares regression leading to rapid mineral identification from the elemental contents of the LIBS technique. Then the technique is employed to analyze the mineral contents quantitatively through the information acquired from an on-stream LIBS slurry analyser. This can lead to many benefits such as rapid control of concentrate quality, enhanced recovery, saving time, energy and manpower.

In hydrometallurgical minerals processing slurries are often processed at very small grind sizes and high solids concentrations. This normally results in flow anomalies of such slurries. Due to flow limits or yield stress the slurry tends to stagnate close to the vessel bottom, the walls and at any internals. The main mixing task therefore generally is not suspending of the solids but the homogeneous blending of the entire vessel volume. If not considered during the agitator design only a fraction of the vessel contents will be mixed. Therefore the knowledge of the slurry rheology as well as the variations in process parameters is vital to design e.g. storage or surge tanks. The integral mixing solution considers the motor power, the choice of the impeller type and number, the impeller diameter as well as the design of the baffles and feed and discharge positions.

Although many small refineries were dismantled in 1934 the total number of plants, including a few under construction, increased from 604 at the beginning of the year to a new high of 638 on January 1, 1935. The capacity also reached a new record, the total of 4,072,400 barrels of crude oil daily being about 45,000 barrels higher than the previous high of January 1, 1932. The number of refineries increased materially in 1933, following construction in east Texas and the building of many small plants in the Rocky Mountain district and elsewhere. Most of the new plants of 1933 were built to provide an outlet for crude or because the ratio between crude oil and gasoline prices appeared conducive to profits However, low gasoline prices and increased costs in 1934 dispelled the hopes for profits; many plants were shut down, and some were dismantled. The number of operating plants declined from 454 on January 1, 1934, to 435 on January 1, 1935, but the number of inactive plants increased from 137 to a new high of 196 during the same period. As indicated above, new construction was at a minimum in 1934, and on January 1, 1935, only 7 plants were being built.

Geotechnical modeling of mines is crucial for understanding the many factors that can pose potential hazards or limit production opportunities. The process of back analyses for modeling is often used, but in many instances, the back analyses can be cumbersome and time inefficient.While thesemodels and back analyses may be accurate, these types of back analyses may not be ideal to be used at mines and by engineers because the process is so time-consuming. This paper introduces event-based back analyses that utilize prior events to create more accurate models while eliminating large modeling time because the models are back analyzed from previous events. The completed analyses supply a more detailed insight into the potential hazards at Round Mountain, an open pit operation, as well as provide a better understanding of how improper risk analysis results in missed opportunities. The more we understand about mining activities and processes through modeling, the safer and more productive mines will be.

A method is described for the rapid and effective production of polished section mounts of ore and mineral particulates to the standards required for automated image analysis. This requires mounting without segregation of particles by mass or density, and it is also preferable to avoid having particles in contact so that they can be recognised as individuals. To achieve this, the particle samples are first split to an appropriate degree in a rotary riffle, and the sub-sample mechanically diluted and thoroughly mixed with an inert filler of the same size range as the particles. Just sufficient epoxy resin is added to make the mixture fluid. During setting, the ore particles are mechanically supported by the inert filler particles, thus maintaining the particles in a random three-dimensional distribution. A rapid two-stage grinding process, based on the successive use of 600 mesh silicon carbide and 1200 mesh (10 um) corundum on cast iron plates, is followed by three stages of mechanical diamond polishing on cloth laps. Hand polishing is entirely avoided, as is the use of papers.

Regardless of the mechanical design features of a particular air classifier certain basic principles apply. Specifically , there are two forces at work: 1. An air drag force 2. An inertial or centrifugal force. The air drag force has an increasing influence as particles become smaller. A very small low mass particle is easily carried along with an air stream even when turning a corner. Thus, fine particles follow the air away from the classifying zone. Inertial forces increase as the mass of a particle gets larger. Thus oversize particles tend to obey Newton's laws and respond to centrifugal forces or simply continue in a straight path when the airflow changes direction.

This report describes a variety of coal mine lighting projects which were funded by the Bureau of Mines in order to obtain underground lighting experience in support of new lighting requirements for underground coal mines. Low coal and high coal, narrow and wide entries, conventional and continuous mining, ac and dc power, bituminous and anthracite, and machine mounting and area lighting were some of the variables covered in this program. Also evaluated was the OCENCO fluorescent caplamp.

This study was conducted to provide experimental evidence on the effect of modifications of gasoline front-end composition on the photochemical specific reactivities of automotive emissions. Evaporative and evaporative-plus-exhaust emissions from an automobile operated with four fuels of different volatility and varying levels of C.-C5 olefins were irradiated in a 10040 environmental chamber at three sets of initial hydrocarbon-nitrogen oxides concentrations. Reactivity was measured and expressed in terms of rate-of-NO2 formation and dosages of oxidant, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and formaldehyde. The compositional changes that were necessary in reducing fuel volatility were found to have no significant effect on the reactivity of the emissions. However, replacing C4-C5 olefins with saturated components resulted in sharp decreases in all reactivity manifestations observed for the evaporative emission samples. A lesser influence (of C4-C5 olefin replacement) was found with the composite exhaust-plus-evaporative samples; the effect that was observed could be attributed to the evaporative emission portion of the sample. The data therefore suggest that saturation of front-end fuel olefins had no large effect on exhaust emission reactivity.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 299 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1972 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Fourteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,902 gas analyses prior to 1972. The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future. To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

Exploration is the systematically financed and technically oriented search for mineral wealth. Almost all established mining companies have an exploration department. The size of a company's search varies over the years as the company's profits, or the corporate philosophy change. While the established mining companies have exploration departments, they are also alert to acquiring discoveries made by others -- especially by prospectors and small companies without the resources to develop their find. The emphasis in some large companies stresses self-generated discoveries while others rely heavily on acquisitions; again, over the years the emphasis may alternate. In the last analysis, essentially all new mineral wealth was found through someone's exploration effort. Before we discuss how exploration is financed, it will be informative to analyze how discoveries have been made and by whom. Recently, the author conducted a survey of randomly selected major mining companies to answer these questions. Most companies responded and many went to considerable effort to give complete and detailed answers. I thank all for their help and cooperation. The questionnaire is attached as Appendix I. Appendix II is a list of the 400 companies that replied in a complete enough manner and format to be analyzed here. The results of the questionnaire are given in Table 1. "World metallurgical coal imports totalled 110million tonnes in 1978. Of this amount, Japan imported 50 million tonnes, making it by far the largest and most important coking coal market . British Columbia and Alberta exported 12.0 million tonnes of coking coal in 1978, or 11% of the world total. Virtually all of these exports were directed to Japan, making up 22% of total imports.Some observers have suggested that because Japan is almost the exclusive buyer of British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coal, the benefits of the coal trade may be primarily on the side of the powerful Japanese buyers. Buttressing this suspicion is the fact that Japanese trading companies have taken substantial equity positions in B.C. coal mines, thus presenting the possibility of non-arms-Iength transfer arrangements. There is then at least some evidence to support the hypothesis that Canada's western coal producers receive prices that are less than would prevail in a more competitive market; that is, that they are exploited.This paper produces evidence that Canada's coals are not underpriced in respect to U.S. and world markets. The conclusion is drawn that British Columbia and Alberta metallurgical coals receive prices that are equal to prices known to be competitively determined. This conclusion follows an in-depth analysis of prices, coal qualities and the economic characteristics of all major coals traded in the Japanese market. A by-product of the analysis is an equation capable of predicting the value of any metallurgical coal sold to Japanese buyers, or, for that matter, any buyer. Hopefully, this can be of some use to coal producers in developing their marketing strategies."

"INTRODUCTIONThe renaissance in gold and silver recovery technology has continued to unfold and it is appropriate to review some of the useful new technologies as well as try to identify some of the industry's future needs and frontiers.The remarkable strengthening in the US dollar has resulted in a relatively low gold price in US Dollars of around $310/oz at the time of writing and silver at $6.25/oz. This general softening in the dollar prices and the recent confusion as to environmental compatibility of cyanidation tailings and effluents, has led to a slowdown in announcements of new operations. Another reason for the slackening off in the USA is that in the past few years a large part of the capital has come from oi I and gas companies that now seem to be losing interest in mineral ventures, and foreign investors for whom the dollar is becoming out of reach. In the author's opinion this represents an unprecedented window of opportunity.Elsewhere in the world where local currencies have weakened, the price of gold is at or close to its all time high.For example, in South African Rands, the gold price was R571.00/oz when the rand was US$1.47 and the gold price reached US$800. Now at US $309/oz and with the Rand at US$0.51 = Rl .00, the local gold price is R600. The price of si Iver in Mexican pesos is not much less than it was when silver reached US$50/oz. Gold, and silver prices in local currencies outside North America are still buovant and at levels where additional investment in new projects is more encouraging.Even in Canada where the dollar is worth about US$0. 75, this provides a smaller but significant cushion compared with US operations. Considering the present strength of the US dollar and even the Canadian dollar relative to many other gold producing countries, there should be significant investment opportunities at today's prices. Mining companies have started to descend on Brazil, for example, where in a matter of just a few years annual gold production has increased from 10 to 70 tons. In South Africa, a Canadian company backed by Swiss financing has been able to take over a Witwatersrand gold mining operation and is installing a huge new tailin9s retreatment plant to process about 1 million tons per month of tailings."

The Ilo Refinery was commissioned in 1975, with a cathode production capacity of 150,000 tpy. In 1994, Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SPCC) purchased the Refinery from Minero Perú SA. Subsequently, in November 1999, Grupo Mexico acquired control of Southern Perú. The anode production facility is located at the Ilo Refinery. A number of effective operating and quality control practices have been developed that have improved anode quality, as well as increasing anode production capacity to 350,000 tpy. These, and other optimization actions have allowed for a current density increase from 213 A/m2 to 275 A/m2, while maintaining current efficiency at 98% and sustaining the high quality of the cathode. The paper will outline the scope of operational practices in the Anode Plant and provide some discussion on the Ilo Smelter modernization project, and the resulting impact on the existing anode plant.

Keywords: Thermal, conductivity, diffusivity, expansion, history, density, specific heat capacity, industrial rich high-carbon manganese slag The thermal conductivity of slag is an important parameter in the design of furnace-containment systems based on freeze-lining technology. Literature indicates that the crystal content of a slag has a significant influence on its thermal conductivity. Industrial, rich, manganese-bearing slag was cooled at different rates to create samples with different microstructures. The coefficients of thermal conductivity of these samples were measured in a nitrogen atmosphere from room temperature to 990°C at 100°C intervals. The laser-flash measurement technique was used for this purpose. Follow-up investigations included XRF and XRD and modelling in FACTSage.

"The Phelps lease in Jasper County, Missouri, was first examined by the Bureau of Mines3/ in December 1943, at the request of Thomas Phelps of Joplin, the lessee. Owing to urgent war requirements for zinc and lead and evidence of favorable geological conditions and past productivity of adjoining properties, it,considered justifiable to explore for extensions of known ore deposits and possible undiscovered ones. In August 1944, funds were allotted for this work, which was started January 5, 1945, under the direction of the author.The provision of facilities and storage space on the property by the lessee during drilling operations is gratefully acknowledged.The Phelps lease is on land belonging to the Rex Mining & Smelting Co. It lies immediately southeast of the city limits of Joplin, Mo. It may be reached by going cast from Joplin on paved 20th street to half a mile beyond Range Line road. Twentieth street is the northern boundary line of the property, which consists of approximately 145 acres and includes the W 1/2, NE1/4, and all of the E ½. NW1/4 except 15 acres along the west side of that quarter section, of sec. 18, T. 27 N., R. 32 W., as shown on figure 1.The property is part of a 1,000-acre tract owned by the Rex Mining & Smelting Co., Paul D. Porter, president, Joplin, Mo. The lease was acquired by Thomas Phelps of Joplin, in 1937. At present the lease is controlled by a recently formed association known as the Eureka Products Co., Charles W. Madison, manager, Kansas City, Mo.Dependable skilled mine labor is scarce in the district at present, but there seems to be enough transient mine labor for small operations. The prevailing wages of the district run from 55 cents to 95 cents per hour for various types of mine labor.Living accommodations and markets to supply all domestic requirements are available in Joplin.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the and that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."
