In experiments for the production of steel the principal problem has always been the introduction into, or removal from, the iron of a definite quantity of carbon. Although the solution of this problem had engaged a more or less blindly and empirically directed effort for a long time, it was only with the development of analytical chemistry that the rôle which carbon plays in the constitution of steel was disclosed in its full significance, and that many of the problems confronting the steel-maker were thereby more clearly defined than before. For a long time, and to a certain extent even to this day, the percentage of carbon in steel has been the controlling means of deter mining its quality and hardness. In many cases the percentage of carbon alone has been relied on for judging large consignments, such as the large deliveries of wire-billets and blooms to America during the past twenty years; and though to-day the influences of the other constituents are recognized and many other considerations are taken into account, and though, moreover, some special steels, such as the Hadfield manganese steel, apparently dispense to a certain extent with the assistance of the carbon, yet fix our Bessemer, Thomas, Siemens and crucible steel the carbon still remains one of the most important constituents, and I venture to say it is indispensable. In order to produce in the Bessemer converter a steel of a certain required percentage of carbon, two methods, as is well known, present themselves. By the one the decarburization process is stopped when the desired carbon limit in the bath has been reached ; by the other the bath is completely decarburizecl, and then a calculated amount of carbon added in the form of spiegel, ferro manganese, etc. In Germany the latter method only was adopted, and it was retained when the Thomas-Gilchrist process for the production of low-Phosphorus steel from high-phosphorus iron eame into use, since from the nature of the new process complete decarburization is neces-

Uncertainty quantification of a spatially distributed variable at any scale can be handled through geostatistical simulation. Large computation time, storage, and post-processing of the realizations are required to obtain a final assessment of block uncertainty. Multi-Gaussian kriging is a flexible alternative to simulation. The idea is to compute the conditional distribution of uncertainty after normal score transformation of the original samples. Under the multi-Gaussian assumption, all marginal and conditional distributions are Gaussian, hence fully defined by their mean and variance. The parameters of the conditional distributions are obtained by simple kriging and can be back-transformed to the original units of the variable of interest. An estimate and any summary of uncertainty can be easily retrieved. The main disadvantage of performing multi-Gaussian kriging is that change of support is not straightforward, that is, calculating uncertainty of block grades. We propose a methodology to overcome this limitation by considering a matrix simulation to generate multiple probability fields. Each probability field is used to draw spatially correlated point values from the point-support conditional distributions, and multiple realizations of the average can be obtained. This permits the calculation of the average over the block and its uncertainty. These blocks may correspond to selective mining units or to volumes from longer production periods relevant for engineering decisions. They can even be disjoint blocks, such as when several faces are mined at the same time. POSTMG, a Fortran program to perform these calculations, is described and a case study is provided.

Mycobacterium phlei has very good potential as a hematite flotation collector. The flotation recovery of hematite is dependent upon the solution pH and concentration of the microorganism. The critical pH for maximum recovery of hematite is around three, which corresponds to the point of zero charge of the microorganism. An excellent correlation between the flotation recovery and bacterial adhesion on hematite is observed. The adhesion of Mycobacterium phlei on hematite can be described by the potential energy of interaction calculations using an extended DLVO theory.

The Lime Creek study area lies 100 air km east of Boise, and 70 air km northeast of Mountain Home, Idaho. The eastern boundary of the 28,000-hectare, east-west-elongate study area lies 0.2 km west of the 3,077-m-high Smoky Dome. The area is mainly underlain by Cretaceous granitoid rocks of the Idaho batholith. No mineral resources were identified, but two mines and one prospect were found in the study area. At the President and the Last Chance mines, in the southwest corner of the study area, gold mineralization occurs along steeply dipping east-northeast-trending faults and associated quartz veins, and within adjacent Cretaceous granitic rock. The mineralized material is not rich enough to mine underground, and near surface, open-pit-mineable deposit areas could not be identified. The third prospect, the Ventura, is within altered pink granite of probable Tertiary age, but metal concentrations are very low. Geothermal activity was not observed within the study area, but hot springs do occur in the Vicinity. Bedrock observed is only suitable for the most basic high bulk and low end value applications, such as crushed aggregate. Numerous sources for crushed stone occur closer to markets. Alluvial concentrate (placer) samples did not contain free gold, and no substantial alluvial bars were seen; deposits were too small to contain resources.

This paper reports on the results of several years of monitoring rehabilitation at a silica sand mine on the Swan Coastal Plain, south of Perth. Mining here occurs below the regional watertable and leaves a post-mine landscape of dredge pond voids (pit lakes) with surrounding battered slopes. The restoration we recommended was to develop the pit lakes as wetlands of regional analogue and value. Several different restoration techniques have been applied to re-vegetate pit lake slopes over many years which have enabled an evaluation of reasons for success/failure of different restoration approaches. Learning acquired clearly showed the benefits of using fresh topsoil for restoration over topsoil that has been stockpiled for several years. Most topsoil used in restoration was from seasonal wetlands and consequently restoration was most successful in the riparian zone from the edge of pit lakes to about 2 m vertically above the water table. Topsoil restored areas above this level remained poor in plant species and cover. Conversely, remedial seeding/planting proved largely unsuccessful. Permanently and seasonally flooded pit lake margins recolonised relatively quickly and successfully with native sedges and rushes. Development of rehabilitated upper slope plant communities over time was evident with loss of typical wetland species and greater growth and survivorship of upland and dampland plant species on mid to upper rehabilitated slopes. Plant communities of lower slopes showed a converse pattern of development, with a shift towards a more typical wetland composition. We believe matching topsoil to site and development of topographic profiles similar to natural wetlands of the region are the keys to optimising restoration success of sand mines with shallow water tables.

Problems of marketing industrial minerals to chemical manufacturers are manifold. In addition to the difficulty of establishing demarcation lines between "crude" and "processed" industrial (nonmetallic) minerals, and "industrial mineral compounds" further uncertainty exists because some chemical manufacturers do not talk the same language as the industrial mineral producer. For example, paint technologists use "rutile" and "anatase" to describe highly refined chemical compounds. The earth scientists use these terms to describe naturally occurring minerals. Further, marketing research problems are intensified because of the overlapping data of the Standard Industrial Classifications (SIC) groups, and the inexactness of "Chemical Industry," "Chemical and Allied Products Industries," and "Chemical Process Industries," which are widely variable in meaning but are often used interchangeably. Bureau of Mines information Circular 8244, "Minerals for Chemical Manufacturing," was the out¬growth of an attempt to unravel some of the problems caused by overlap of statistical data compared with actual industry practices. Using this study as a base, specific industrial mineral applications of some important sub-industry groups were analyzed for the; California chemical industry. Differences between local and national practices were compared. Practices usually differed, depending on cost and availability of alternate minerals, climate, idiosyncrasies, local regulations, and other conditions. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8260, "Mineral Fillers for the California Pesticides Industry," is the first such analysis of, a sub-industry group. Other such studies are underway. Obtaining national data is easy, but to be able to compile meaningful information which can be revealed on a regional and State basis generally is difficult and often impossible. This paper will briefly emphasize some of the industrial mineral problems encountered, and bring out the needs and benefits being derived through the continued cooperation of authoritative officials concerned with supply and consumption of industrial minerals in government and industry.

Ventilation is part of all underground mine operations and is undertaken in order to introduce fresh, cool air to the workings and to remove stale, affected air. It is problematic to obtain efficient and accurate estimates of volume flow and static pressure in the installed operational configuration for the auxiliary axial flow fans.An empirical method was developed to estimate the static pressure and volume flow through a calibrated differential pressure port on axial flow fans. Prior to shipping, each fan is performance tested according to BS 848 (ISO 5801) to establish the fan performance curves. In addition to the standard required parameters captured to fully describe the performance, the differential pressure is measured across the fan rotor to enable correlation with the characteristic fan curve.The method was implemented on a ruggedised tablet PC platform. This compact platform is then used to calculate the volume flow rate from the differential pressure sensor measurement input via a USB port. The result is a real-time measurement of volume flow and operating point of the fan system. This can be used effectively in overall modelling of the mine auxiliary ventilation systems and calculation of system resistance could provide a health indication of the fan and duct system.CITATION:Ratner, G and Viviers, S, 2013. "Originally developed in 1993, LaModel has aided mining engineers and researchers alike in improving the design and safety of underground single- and multiple-seam mining operations (Heasley, 1998). Through the years (Heasley, 2011), the use and capabilities of the LaModel program have grown immensely while adapting to ground control concerns and problems within the mining industry. Presently, MSHA specifically mentions the use of LaModel for the analysis of, “complex non-typical roof control plans,” defined as either room-and-pillar retreat mining greater than 1000 feet, bump- or bounce-prone mines, or other criteria considered unusual by the District Manager (Stricklin, 2013).With an ever increasing number of users and an increase in available solution options and complex analyses, there is now a significant demand for better education and training in the practical application and detailed analysis using LaModel. This paper presents the development of an electronic user’s manual and comprehensive online training course created in an open online learning environment in order to better inform and train industry professionals as well as engineering students and new users. The development of both the user’s manual and online training course will ultimately increase the ground control design effectiveness of mining engineers, leading to safer and more productive mine designs.INTRODUCTIONOver the past 20 years, mining engineers and researchers have used the LaModel program for improving the design and safety of single- and multiple-seam mining operations. LaModel uses a laminated, displacement-discontinuity, boundary-element method which simplifies the overburden into a stack of frictionless homogeneous laminations and limits the detailed analysis to the seam itself. This approach is fundamentally simpler than either finite-element, finite-difference, or discrete-element approaches; and, therefore, the program provides a significant reduction in computational time and efficiently calculates the displacements, stresses, pillar safety factors, multiple-seam interactions, subsidence, etc. for thin-bedded deposits such as coal, salt, potash, limestone, etc. (Heasley and Salamon, 1996; Heasley and Agioutantis, 2001). The laminated overburden model in LaModel is different than previous homogeneous elastic formulations and more realistically represents the natural flexibilities of the stratified sedimentary overburden typically associated with coal seams (Heasley, 2008)."

This paper discusses the application of the computer to coal preparation process predictions. In broad terms, the computer is used to perform two main functions. Firstly, the given float-sink analysis is interpolated and extrapolated to cover the entire actual range of raw coal specific gravity. Assumptions based on historical data must be made at times. Secondly, the partition curve, which, from historical data, defines the efficiency of a specific coal washing process, is applied to the washability data in order to determine the expected clean coal yield and quality. The vast amount of numerical work which is required to make a prediction of this type exhibits the need for computer methods in this area.

My thanks are due also to our own staff on the Dominion Coal Board, who spared neither time nor effort in helping to prepare this paper.STATISTICS are comparatively dull and, to many people, coal statistics are duller than most. Coal is, however, the one basic mineral upon which our whole way of life depends and it may be well if attention is drawn to this fact by an occasional statistical review of the coal position in Canada. The recent furore over the oil and gas discoveries has so obscured the basic position of coal in many minds that a little basic coal information may be useful. It is for this reason that, for the third successive year, a factual survey of the coal position is being presented.In the previous papers (1) explanations have been given of the basic considerations in the preparation of these reports and some special phases of the overall picture have been examined. An intensive investigation into modern roof support technology, including hy draulic and control systems, has been carried out against the perspective of global development and support behaviour on longwall faces across the Indian sub-continent. The wide ranging study examined various types and designs of modern supports used in seams of varying thickness and inclination where caving and stowing were practised. Consideration has been given to structural analysis, support resistance, the various forces acting over and on the powered supports and to support compatibility. The examination of the phy sical parameters has been allied to field experience and, together, have led to the formulation of standard designs for both the powered support structure and structural systems. A realistic mathematical model has been formulated for calculating the capacity of roof support requirements resulting from the actual behaviour of the immediate roof stratum. As a result of the work, it should be possible to readily select the most appropriate type of support sy stem for the conditions and longwall mining method that is to be employed.

It is well known that many so-called free-milling silver arcs are so classed more from their value necessitating a cheap process than from a real adaptability to raw amalgamation. Such low--grade ores, carrying more or less sulphurets, are more profitably treated by a cheap rapid process than by the more effective but costly process of roasting arid amalgamation. The tailings are sometimes crudely concentrated, or, after lying and becoming partially oxidized, are again worked in pans. Of late years, by the use of improved methods of concentration, many old low-grade tailings-piles have been reworked to a good profit; and in some improved mills arrangements are made to concentrate before or after amalgamation, thus making a single treatment in mill suffice. It is self-evident that on a low-grade ore a small increase in percentage saved is of no commercial advantage if accompanied by a material increase in cost, and therefore a cheap and continuous system of work is the real necessity, if a fair saving be effected. As an illustration of the possibilities of combined concentration and amalgamation on some ores, the following results of a working test at the New York Ore-Milling and Testing Works will be of some interest. With increasing of mining depth, many iron ores in Liaoning Province contain carbonates such as siderite and ankerite. The emergence of these carbonates in ores creates a fatal impact on the running producing process of anionic reverse flotation in Dong Anshan Sintering Plant, which leads to ?concentrate and tailing no separated?. And its reason is still unknown. Moreover, siderite, despite that its ferric theoretic grade is only 48.2%, however, do not affect the blast furnace utilization factor, therefore, can be used as raw materials in ironmaking. In order to solve the separate problem of iron ore containing carbonates, five pure minerals, martite, magnetite, quartz, siderite and ankerite, were selected for a series single flotation experiment. The aim was to discover the flotation difference of these minerals, furthermore, to explore a new flow sheet for the iron ore containing carbonates. The results of single mineral flotation experiment reveal that the combination regulators, starch and CaCl2, in different pH extent, can make these minerals taking on obvious flotation difference, which make it possible to process the iron ore containing carbonates. A new flow sheet, step-flotation, to process iron ore containing carbonates is explored, that is, first step, direct-flotation processing, is to eliminate the bad effect that the carbonates bring in flotation system by collecting carbonates under neutral condition; the second step, reverse?flotation processing, is to get qualified iron concentrate by collecting quartz under alkaline condition. Manual mixed ore sample were processed successfully through this new flowsheet under proper reagent system, which has absolute advantage compared with routine flowsheet. Actual ore sample of compound magnetic separation concentrate were processed successfully both open and closed circuit experiment through this new flowsheet. SEM and EDS were used to probe the reason why carbonates affect the regular processing. It is analyzed that moderate floatability of siderite and its coating on the surface of hematite and quartz make the phenomenon ?concentrate and tailing no separated?. This research provides a reasonable processing scheme for iron ores containing carbonates and can be used for reference in processing other complicated, refractory iron ore.

This report deals with the changing behavior of mine roof bolt and roof rock as a result of repetitious production blasting . Observations were made in the upper shale production headings at the White Pine Copper Co. room and pillar mine , White Pine , Mich . Roof bolt compression pads and a stratascope were used in the investigations , which were carried out in three separate test sites in which nearly identical procedure produced comparative , repetitive , and anomalous observations . Results indicate roof bolt tension change and roof quality deterioration anomalies were coincident with blasting . The hypothesized cause of the anomalies is a seismic shock generated by the blasts .

"Process Safety Management for METTOP means avoiding risks as far as possible - but also dealing with the residual risk by using all existing management tools or external assistance, if required. The presented paper has two parts. The first one introduces a new and very safe cooling technology for metallurgical furnaces. The second part shows how to deal with the residual risk as well as minimize it by using the tapping area of an electric arc furnace as an example.Today more and more intense furnace operations require effective cooling in order to achieve low refractory wear and good furnace lifetime, making cooling technology an important aspect of furnace operation. However, the use of water - today’s standard cooling medium - has some disadvantages, as it can cause problems both during furnace start up and operation, namely hydration problems, corrosion, and explosion.To overcome the disadvantages of water, a new cooling technology using an alternative cooling medium, namely ISIS B (a special kind of ionic liquid) was developed. The main advantage of ISIS B is the fact that no explosion occurs when this liquid comes in contact with molten metal. The working temperature range of ISIS B of 50 to 200 °C results in other advantages as there are no corrosion problems and no risks of hydration.The fact that no explosion occurs when ISIS B contacts molten metal leads to a revolutionary solution for the metallurgical industry in terms of safety. Especially in critical areas - like tap-holes - new safety standards can be achieved.Together with the TÜV Austrian Holding AG a risk analysis was done for a water cooled tap-hole as well as for a tap-hole cooled with ionic liquids. It is shown that using the new technology the risk can be decreased dramatically and the importance of a best available technology is described."

The applicability of the beam theory in analysis of roof- pillar-weak floor interaction in partial extraction room-and-pillar mining is presented. The mine structure is modeled as an equivalent multi-indeterminate overburden elastic beam supported by elasto-plastic pillars; resting on a viscoelastic layer of immediate weak floor strata underlain by a competent rock mass. The developed analytical model was initially utilized to conduct sensitivity analyses of different variables affecting the mining system, such as the deformability of coal and weak floor strata, thickness of weak floor strata, number of pillars in a panel, width of pillars, width of panel etc. These analyses were then extended to three overburden strata - coal pillar - floor strata lithologies typical of active coal mining areas in Illinois.

This work describes a leaching process for the conversion of high-magnesium peridotite rock, which is a chromite ore overburden, into two valuable products: magnesium salts and micro silica. Under normal leaching conditions, residue remaining after leaching is of a gelatinous nature and thus hinders the filtration process. To address this issue, oxidative leaching with the addition of H2O2 was employed, and it significantly improved the filtration kinetics. Four different approaches for H2O2 addition were tried, and they all proved effective in controlling gelation. The optimum oxidative leaching condition was 70 °C, 2 h time, 2 M H2SO4, 0.5MH2O2 and 400 RPM; under these conditions, 92% magnesium leaching efficiency was achieved. After leaching, the leach liquor obtained was purified and dried into Mg(OH)2 and MgSO4 salts. The leach residue contained mainly silica particles, with size in the 10–30 μm range. This material thus represents an attractive candidate for the production of highperformance concrete for the construction industry. The oxidative leaching process described here enabled the complete conversion of peridotite into valuable products, magnesium salts and micro silica.

As soon as the likelihood of American participation in the war was established, and in spite of the fact that we can produce almost as much as all other countries combined, the demand for prompt deliveries of iron and steel products from American factories began to exceed their utmost capacity, and, after fifteen months of practically full operation, has continued to do so. Therefore, it would seem worth while to review some of the aspects of the supply and demand for steel as well as the efforts that are being made to bring them into balance. It is still being debated as to whether the situation should be defined as a real shortage that will persist through the emergency period or as a temporary one than can be relieved by less drastic measures than a Government-sponsored program of expanding existing plants and building new ones.
