With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. Ranger is a uranium mining operation located within one of the most environmentally sensitive regions of Australia. Geology has played an important role in mine planning, operations and rehabilitation since discovery of the deposits 25 years ago. The Ranger orebodies have a reserve total of 166 300 tonnes of U308 including 90 400 tonnes of U308 at North Ranger. At current milling rates these reserves give a mine life greater than 40 years. The uranium is hosted in Lower Proterozoic rocks of the Cahill I ormation and is associated with strong chlorite alteration. In pit grade control involves the use of calibrated probes and a radiometric truck discriminator allowing fast, accurate grade determination of material. Ore is defined at a cut-off grade of 0.2 per cent U308. Mineralised material is defined by the Uranium Mining (Environmental Control) Act 1979 (UMEC Act) at a grade of 0.02 per cent U30s. Natural water levels in the #1 Pit area vary as much as 7.5 metres between wet and dry seasons. Ground water inflow into the pit during the dry season is 600 m3/day. No significant slope failures have occurred in the pit. The environmental impact of mining operations is constantly monitored. Rehabilitation of non-mineralised stockpiles is ongoing. This paper discusses the interaction between geology, hydrogeology, rock mechanics and grade control with the present mining operation.

Methane emission from two surface gob-degasification boreholes was measured by the Bureau of Mines. The investigation took place during mining of a 3,200-foot longwall panel in the Lower Kittanning coalbed in central Pennsylvania. The first hole was 500 feet from the start of mining, and the second hole was 2,200 feet. The first hole went on natural draft as soon as the longwall face passed it. This caused the methane flow in the return entries to drop 75 pct. In the 6 months required to complete the panel, the two holes emitted 69 MMcf of methane in varying percentages of concentration in air. In 3 years, the holes emitted a total of 150 MMcf of methane.

Em função da crise energética e do aquecimento global, faz-se necessário a utilização de novas fontes de energia como uso sustentável da matriz energética disponível. Do exposto, a CEMIG GT, a ONDATEC e a Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, investiram em um projeto no âmbito do Programa (P&D) Cemig/Aneel para geração de energia. O objetivo deste trabalho foi efetuar a avaliação do potencial energético dos efluentes gasosos (gases não condensáveis – GNC) e líquidos (Gases Condensáveis) de uma planta de pirólise de biomassa via micro-ondas para a produção de carvão vegetal. Para tanto, a ONDATEC construiu uma unidade piloto de produção de carvão vegetal (pirólise) por micro-ondas com capacidade de produção de 150 kg por hora. O processo de pirólise ocorreu em modo contínuo e em dois estágios, a secagem da biomassa e a pirólise propriamente dita, com a produção de carvão vegetal, gás de pirólise (GNC) e bio-óleo (GC). Em face dos resultados obtidos para o GC e o GNC, foi verificado um potencial de geração de 2,24 MWh de energia elétrica por tonelada de carvão produzido, que pode ser uma boa alternativa para desonerar a cadeia produtiva do carvão vegetal e do ferro gusa.

By observing different coal char’s microstructures and microscopic morphologies during the coking process, the characteristics of COREX coal char’s microstructure and properties were analyzed. MCRI and MCSR were used to respectively describe the reactivity and the strength after reaction of coal char, with those of BF’s coke for reference, and then the physical meaning of MCRI and MCSR were given. MCRI and MCSR were determined by the composition of coal char. For the two kinds of COREX coal, the formula to forecast the hot performance of coal char was set up by making a multiple linear regression between the hot performance and microstructure of the coal char at 1100℃, and the predictive values of coal char’s hot performance at 600℃, 800℃ and 1000℃ coincided well with the measured values.

Bulk Metallic Glasses have a high potential as advanced engineering materials due to their various properties including strength and corrosion resistance, to name a few. This paper investigates amorphous phase formation and rapid solidification characteristics of impulse atomized Co-based alloys in order to understand and control the application properties of the final products. Amorphous fraction and kinetic crystallization properties of the atomized Co-based alloy powders were quantified by means of Differential Scanning Calorimetry. In addition, different but complementary characterization tools were used to analyze microstructures of the powders. These include optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and micro-hardness tests. While the amorphous fraction within the powders is promoted by high cooling rate and smaller powder size as expected, hardness is found to decrease with the fraction of amorphous phase.

The possibility of increasing the efficiency of mineral processing plants by means of computer control has prompted metallurgists to examine their flowsheets more critically in order to develop practical control strategies. Control schemes in use to date generally rely on the automation of traditional and previously manually regulated control loops, for instance the addition of reagents to maintain a constant assay or a constant pH. This approach is predicated on the availability of well-established primary sensors such as pH electrodes or on-stream analyzers. Noranda Research Centre, in cooperation with Noranda Group concentrators, has developed a froth level monitor and a pulp density meter susceptible of application in this type of control. Although some of the basic principles on which they are based have been known for some time, their incorporation into the design of reliable, direct-reading instruments which can be interfaced with a computer, is be-lieved to be novel*.

THE Nichols Copper Co., associated with the Phelps Dodge Corp. and the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., has constructed at El Paso, Tex., and is now operating a copper refinery with a yearly capacity of 100,000 tons of anodes. Transportation facilities were perhaps the most important of the considerations that led to the selection of this site. The rapid industrial development of the Middle and Far West has increased the consumption of copper there. The advantage of local refining as against shipping the copper to the Atlantic sea- board is apparent. Copper refined in the Southwest is equally competitive for export shipment, either from the Gulf or the Pacific Coast ports. The tonnage of copper produced in the Southwest not only justifies the construction of this plant, but may warrant considerable expansion in years to come.

This paper describes the preliminary design of the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnels along State Route 24 in Oakland, California. The paper focus is on two major aspects of the project: initial support system design and seismic design. The initial support system was designed based on the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).NATM provides the required flexibility to accommodate the variable ground conditions in the weak, folded, and faulted rock along the alignment. The seismic design provides a final lining system that meets serviceability requirements for a 1,500 year seismic event with an estimated peak ground acceleration of 1.2g.

Due to the worldwide population growth, the development of sustainable infrastructure and the exploration of renewable energies plays a key role to handle the rising megacity trends and to limit carbon footprint. Herrenknecht AG is a leading manufacturer of Tunnel Boring machines and has constantly endeavored through its extensive Research and Development programs to address limitations faced by the civil engineering industry as regards to construction equipment capabilities. New mechanized technologies, mainly coming from the tunnelling industry, have been developed by Herrenknecht AG as an efficient alternative to conventional civil engineering, where tailor-made concepts are required to comply with restricted conditions onsite. Very often this innovation led technology capability has meant making construction processes safer due to minimal human intervention and also far more productive due to higher performance as compared to other latest or conventional methods of construction. The rising need for even higher building structures and large-capacity bridges involve the development of innovative deep foundation technologies for on- and offshore operation. Conventional methods like bore piles reach their technical and economic limits under certain conditions. For building shafts and foundations, the mechanized Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine technology (VSM) from Herrenknecht AG is a proven innovation and has now been used in various onshore infrastructure projects worldwide to construct a total of 94 circular shafts in depths of up to 115 meters. It operates below the groundwater level, completely remote-controlled from the surface in a diameter range from 4.5 to 18 meters. Subsequently Herrenknecht noted that Offshore foundations, especially in non-drivable ground conditions such as soft and hard rock (e.g. limestone, sandstone, mudstone, granite etc. or soft soil with high density) and shallow continental shelf (water depth approx. 20-60m), presented construction challenges and equally an opportunity for building high performance equipment. The latter construction conditions usually requires drilled installation methods for applications such as harbor enlargements, bridge foundations and foundations for offshore wind turbines. The Offshore Foundation Drilling technology (OFD®) is Herrenknecht’s latest innovation, incorporating our learnings from the VSM and full-face Tunnel Boring machines, and the OFD® enables a rapid and economical offshore installation in such variable ground and rock conditions. This paper will discuss the technology behind the new mechanized technology of VSM and Herrenknecht’s latest innovation of the OFD® along with their respective application fields in foundations construction. The paper will further present in details, their range of benefits to the construction industry.

"Secant pile walls are used for the construction of deep basement walls and earth retaining structures. Risk associated with secant pile walls is commonly perceived as being the safety of site personnel and the public during piling operations, or safety used in design. It is recognized that both of these are of paramount importance, but additional risks associated with the construction methods must also be considered to complete the risk management profile for any project. For the particular case of secant pile walls, if Clients take a ""back seat"" they may be unaware of the total risk package they are procuring. The authors argue that the piling contractor should be involved at the earliest stage giving input into the overall risk management process. Such early involvement within the professional team will maximise cost benefits to the Client and minimise the delays and cost increases sometimes associated with these works. A consistent methodology for identifying and then managing all the risks associated with secant pile walls is proposed. An example is used to demonstrate how this methodology should be employed. INTRODUCTIONThis paper discusses the value of a complete and integrated risk management process for structures with basements formed using a secant pile wall.The risk associated with any secant pile wall can be consicfered as comprising four components;1. Safety of people on site2. Safety of design or design methodology3. Construction risks4. Commercial risksAny risk management system needs to fully consider and integrate each of these four components to maximise the likelihood of a successful outcome for the basement.This paper concentrates on the construction risks for secant pile walls, as these are not often understood by the Client (in this paper the term ""Client"" also includes the main contractor, principal contractor, Engineer, Planning Supervisor, quantity surveyor and cost consultant)."

Determining the change of stress in rock based on measurements of the deformation of a drill hole is a procedure that is increasing in popularity. A closely related procedure involves the applicat10n of this principle to determine the existing stresses in a rock medium, by cutting free (core drilling) an annulus containing the drill hole. In this Bureau of Mines report, expressions are derived from which one can calculate the stress ellipsoid--the three-dimensional change of stress, or the existing three-dimensional stress field, as the case may be. Study of these equations shows that the stress components in three dimensions can be determined by measurements in only two drill holes, and yields general principles that are useful in planning an efficient program of drilling and measurement. Procedures are given for calculating the least squares estimates of the stress components and their standard errors, and for evaluating or comparing calculated values by means of standard statistical inferences.

Welded wire mesh is the most commonly used skin control technique in the United States underground coal mines. Currently, selection of the mesh is based on trial and error rather than any rigorous design methodology. Several factors affect a wire mesh?s performance including the amount of rock material to be supported and how the load is distributed, wire gauge, aperture size, grade of steel, weld strength, bolting pattern and sheet size. Although the best way to choose the mesh is to conduct full-scale physical load tests, because of the limitations on the number of variables that can be considered in such tests and the requirement of an elaborate test set-up, it may not always be possible to use this option. An alternative would be to use numerical modeling to study the load-deformation behavior of a wire mesh. In addition to providing a very detailed stress, strain distribution in the entire mesh, the advantage of this approach is the ease with which parametric studies can be conducted. In this paper it is shown that the load-deformation curves generated by nonlinear numerical models match closely with laboratory derived ones. Then, based on parametric studies, design guidelines are developed to choose the mesh appropriate for different loading conditions. The modeling studies also bring forth the limitations of the current lab studies. For example, under some conditions it was noticed that the small sheet size considered in lab tests would produce higher mesh deformations than a full-size one used in actual practice.

In the fairly recent past, with a history of cheap and abundant energy, it has been possible to predict with reasonable confidence that world energy demand would continue to double about every 15 years. Those who attempted to forecast the role of nuclear energy in future electricity generation could also start with the fairly safe assumption that electricity demand would increase even faster : with a doubling in demand about every 10 years. To estimate the likely future world demand for uranium it was then necessary to introduce a number of other assumptions including the rate of penetration of nuclear energy, the timing and the specific fuel requirements. This series of assumptions naturally compounded the uncertainty, but, remarkably, usually led to future uranium demands being overestimated. Such a bias which has almost always been observed in predictions made over the past 20 years has increasingly made uranium producers sceptical when expected to match the forecast demand with increased production capacity and supporting reserves. This scepticism has, of course, been reinforced by the persistence so far of a buyers' market in uranium throughout the entire period of emergence of commercial nuclear electricity generation.

Roasting processes are divided into several elementary mechanisms, any of which could be significant or pre-dominant in a particular roast. The elementary processes considered in-elude beat transfer, gas-solid inter-actions with accompanying mass transfer between the bed and furnace atmosphere, vapor phase transport processes in solid-solid interactions, and solid phase diffusion processes. Examples are chosen of processes in which one of these mechanisms pre-dominates and some recently obtained data is presented to support the existence and significance of these mechanisms. Fiji is a developing nation that relies on economic opportunities and recently experienced increased interest in mining and mineral exploration that could potentially benefit the country. In order to understand the lack of, or failure of, past rehabilitation activity, this study applied risk-based approaches to identify the significance of activities or actions applicable to rehabilitation of post-mined land in Fiji. This involved the use of qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk methodologies, which allow assessment and evaluation of mechanisms of mining administration and practices, as well as rehabilitation methods and approaches that have been applied successfully to post-mined land in other countries with similar environmental and climatic conditions and social and regulatory environments to Fiji. The semi-quantitative risk-based technique followed an earlier approach applied for mine closure by Laurence (2006) and provided a systematic way to assess and evaluate rehabilitation issues that were identified on-site by assessors, who were able to estimate through expert judgement the likelihood and consequences based on conditions, situations observed and circumstances on-site. It demonstrated that experienced professionals could reproducibly score likelihood and consequence of selected items relevant to mine site rehabilitation, despite the wide-ranging issues identified during post mined land rehabilitation. The quantitative risk-based approach was adopted as a method to determine environmental bonds for mining projects using the assessment of consequences and likelihood results from the semi-quantitative approach, then incorporating unit cost of materials or activities for local conditions required to fully rehabilitate each issue at net present value. Analysis of the helium content of a natural gas presents more than the usual difficulties encountered in applying the thermal-conductivity method because of the relatively small amounts of this inert as present and the wide variation in the other constituents. However, the numerous advantages of this method and its adaptability to Continuously recording and control instruments make it worthy of consideration. A specific application of the method described yields quantitative results only when used with gas mixtures of known qualitative compositions which Vary within predetermined limits. Periodic analyses for the helium content of a producing gas well may be conveniently made by an absorption method, and a continuums analytical method is not necessary for this purpose. Natural gas containing 1.75 to 1.90 percent of helium produced from Government-owned wells is processed in the Amarillo (Texas) Helium Plant of the Bureau of lanes. The helium extracted in the plant is supplied to the Army and Navy, and the processed natural gas is sold to a commercial gas company. As complete recovery of the helium in the raw material is not economically practicable, the processed gas contains 0.1 to 0.3 percent of helium, depending upon conditions of operation. Production is checked against the helium removed from the gas, which before the installation of the thermal-conductivity apparatus was calculated from the analysis of a cumulative sample of the processed gas. As conditions of operation affect the residual helium content to a large extent, a composite sample was an uncertain index of the efficiency of the process.

This paper describes how Brisbane-based PanAust Limited develops process control strategies that are implemented at all operations and are used in functional descriptions for plant upgrades and new projects.The process control strategies are determined by operating management philosophies designed to maximise returns from the company’s assets.The approach is endorsed in the project planning and design phases to ensure facilities and equipment that form the major production assets are fit for purpose and capable of enabling the production managers and operators of the projects to maximise shareholder returns.PanAust’s process control approach has been to develop sets of process control standards which focus on two key areas. The first area covers hardware requirements and architecture, software objectives, control models and individual loop tuning methods. The second area defines control room layout, graphic standards and the alarm philosophy. The application of these standards in a new plant or upgrade decreases the time required to achieve design capacity and optimal performance.The PanAust process control strategy changes the operator’s role from one that controls a number of individual loops to one that sets the control objectives of the processing plant. To achieve optimal performance, all the process areas of the plant are analysed to identify opportunities to improve throughput, recovery and stability. Once a key opportunity is identified, a process control strategy is developed which defines the objective of the control, its functionality and how an operator will interact with it. After development of the control model the operators assist engineers to test and debug it. The mining industry will face numerous challenges over the next 10–15 years as new deposits are likely to be more remote and lower grade and existing deposits will be mined deeper. As a result, mines and mining contractors operating in deep-mine conditions will need to focus on the quality of drilling and blasting to minimise unnecessary waste rock excavation to keep costs at an acceptable level. In addition, increased demand for improved safety and operator ergonomics will set greater demands on original equipment manufacturers of mining equipment. Finally, difficulties finding a skilled and experienced workforce, particularly in remote mine locations, have already negatively impacted mines’ ability to achieve high productivity and low operating costs.This paper introduces techniques and shares practical experiences in increasing productivity and reducing the costs of excavation in underground face drilling. The paper uses Sandvik’s new DD422i automated mining jumbo as an example of the type of equipment needed to deliver the features and corresponding benefits for future mine development.
