IN speaking of the mining and economic conditions prevailing at the present time on the Rand, it is not my intention to go into the details of the mining-practice, since this has been already well described both in the Transactions1 and elsewhere,2 but rather to take a more comprehensive view of the industry and its surroundings as a. whole, marking its general development and the lines of its future progress. In a. paper entitled Deep-Level Shafts on the Witwatersrand, with Remarks on a Method of Working the Greatest Number of Deep-Level Mines with the Fewest Possible Shafts,3 presented to this Institute in August, 1900, I drew attention to the great cost of sinking the very deep vertical shafts that were then being seriously proposed as necessary for the development of the deeper areas, pointing out the strong advisability of working this ground by means of inclines to be sunk from the existing shafts of from 3,000 to 4,000 ft. in vertical depth. In this paper it is stated (1:). 975): "In short, practice upon the Rand now tends towards fewer vertical shafts and more underground inclines, especially for the very deep mining about to be undertaken." In consequence, the 6,000-ft. vertical shafts, at one time so much discussed, have never been started, and they do not now seem likely ever to be. The necessity of placing all deep shafts further apart in order to make them control and exhaust larger areas was also dwelt upon. Didipio gold-copper mine operation is situated in the island of Luzon, approximately 270 km north of Manila in the Philippines, in an area of high seasonal rainfall. The hydrogeological water flow model implied that there would be high connectivity between regional structures and underground operations. This model predicted that underground mine groundwater inflows were expected to quickly rise as the decline progressed to a peak of 510 L/s. Designing a capital pump station to deal with 510 L/s has its own challenges, however developing the decline down to the required level, always dealing with 300 L/s of water and constructing the pump station is extremely challenging and required a robust water management plan and mine design. When dealing with expected high volumes of water, underground mine design and scheduling plays a key role in protecting electrical infrastructure, equipment, secondary pumps, and the decline from flooding. A good drainage system and controlled dewatering plan is essential for safety and progress. This paper details the dewatering techniques and mine designs required to accomplish decline development with high water inflows as used in the Didipio project. It will describe the learnings and outcomes that are achievable with a flexible design, as new structures are mapped, and water intersections are increased. It also highlights the potential for adaptability in mine planning to provide evolving improvements or to evade problems that are expected from the constant reconciliation of data recorded during development.

A case study is presented on the optimization of cable bolting patterns in cut-and-fill stopes at the Chikla Mine, MOIL, India. Rock mass characterization, using Bieniawski’s RMR and Barton’s Q, indicated that the stopes lie in the “no supports required” to “spot bolting required” support categories. In contrast, the current practice of cable bolting in a 2.0 m by 2.0 m grid pattern for stope widths less than 12 m displays different results. Numerical modelling results are in line with the rock mass characterization study. It can be affirmed, as well, that no cable is carrying rock loads greater than 5 t. This fact is derived from observational behaviour of the crown pillar of an experimental stope with open stoping operations and hanging cables in the cut-and-fill stopes of the mine. An increase in the cable bolting grid spacing is, hence, recommended for implementation by mine management, based on the study described in subsequent sections. It is also suggested that the mine adopt the open stoping method, provided results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program in an experimental stope with a cable bolting grid of 2.5 m square are favourable.

New turbine blades designed to resist ash erosion were tested by the Bureau of Mines in a pilot-scale coal-fired gas turbine. After a total of 1,963 hours, the rotor blades were only slightly eroded; and they had an estimated useful life of 20,000 to 30,000 hours. Changes in aerodynamic design of the blades successfully concentrated the ash at the outer casing, but stepped sidewalls for the rotor drum and wear strips at the bases of the rotor blades are still needed to minimize wear at these points. Stepped sidewalls and wear strips did not adequately protect the stator blades. Ash slightly eroded their leading edges, above the inserts, and cut notches into their trailing edges near the bases. Stator blade life was estimated at 5,000 to 7,500 hours. Blade erosion in these tests was less severe than with previous designs, but more efficient combustors and ash separators are required to reduce the amount and size of ash entering the turbine, to achieve acceptable blade life for commercial operation.

Recent drilling programs have shown that the in-situ coal resources of Nova Scotia are very substantial. The grand totals of the measured, indicated and inferred categories amount to 232 m, 646m and 993 m tons, respectively. This vast quantity of coal occurs essentially in five main fields: Sydney, Mabou, Port Hood, Pictou and Springhill. The largest resources (84% of the total) occur in the submarine area of the Sydney coalfield. With a 65% recovery rate, there are at present 150m tons of proven, recoverable coal in Nova Scotia. At a predicted maximum annual production of 5 m tons, this amount equals a lifespan of 30 years. However, additional drilling, particularly in the Sydney offshore area, holds promise of increasing the recoverable reserve tonnage to at least 350 m tons. This figure may be compared with the 484 m tons production obtained during 191 years of mining (from 1785-1976). The geological appraisal of the remaining coal resources in the five fields mentioned is presented in three-dimensional diagrams, per individual seam and corresponding reserve area. In addition, the submarine extensions of the Sydney and Mabou coalfields are discussed in light of results obtained from off shore oil exploration wells. The terminology and standards of coal resource calculations are pointed out, and the phenomenon of seam splitting and its prediction from geological data is illustrated. The availability in Nova Scotia of either thermal or metallurgical coal is considered in relation to rank and sulphur content. This paper was presented in June 1977 at the 90th Annual Meeting of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia. The coal resource estimates, however, have been updated to include the results obtained with the offshore drilling in the Sydney Coalfield to November 1977.

In this paper, we review the equations needed to construct an ion exchange column model. These models contain three major components: 1) a differential material balance around the colunm, 2) a differential material balance around an ion exchange particle, and 3) a constitutive equation for diffusive flux We then examine the ability of a fairly simple mathematical model to predict ion exchange column experimental data. This model contains the traditional absorption theory equations and is used to predict the behavior of a column filled with a hydrous crystalline silico-titanate and which is removing trace amounts of Cs+ from a high pH, complex electrolyte solution. Finally, we propose replacing Fick's law with the Nernst-Planck equation as the constitutive equation for diffusive flux We use a Nernst-Planck type model to predict batch experimental data, then evaluate it by comparing it's ability to predict experimental data to that of a more traditional Fick's law type model? The data from this comparison suggests that the Nemst-Planck type model yields better results.

For the past several years, inflation has placed increasing pressure on our economic system. The total effect of inflation is complex when combined with other factors which affect the economics of equipment. A mathematical model is described herein which can be programmed on a computer to determine the effect of inflation on economic life and profits after taxes. The computer output results in graphic plots which clearly show the relation of various percentages of inflation to life and profits. Inflation has become a common topic of conversation in the recent past. What is it and how can it be measured? What effect does increased inflation have on equipment policy? Research now in progress at the Construction Institute at Stanford University is beginning to unravel some of the mystery of inflation. As a start, let us answer the first question by defining the word inflation. The dictionary says that inflation is "an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods resulting in a substantial and continuing rise in the general price level. It appears, in fact, that we are in an inflationary spiral which is "a continuous rise in prices that is sustained by the tendency of wage increases and cost increases to act on each other." 3 Inflation behaves just like compound interest. It takes more dollars of future years to buy an equal amount of a given commodity, be it a material or a service. Let us assume an annual inflation rate of 5 percent. The theme of the conference this year is diversification. One way to diversify is through acquisition. The principle underlying the winner's curse is that in competitive bidding situations where the value of the asset bid for is uncertain the winning bid will overstate the true value of the asset. The successful bidder is blessed with the winner's curse. What this paper will explore is to what extent this is true; how acquirers can avoid being blessed with the winners curse; and show how joint venture deal structures are used within the mining industry to avoid the winners curse.

"Virtual reality, a three-dimensional computer generated environment, has become recognized delivery system for many forms of education. This article describes the application of virtual reality to mineral processing education. An interactive mineral processing visualisation module has been developed at University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. The module provides students with an overview of a base metal concentrator, details about each stage of the process, as well as revealing how the mined ore progresses from stage to stage. The module also involves developing a number of instructional based plant layouts and flowsheets in the virtual environment that are intended to assist the user in understanding the essential components of the base metal concentrator.INTRODUCTIONVirtual Reality (VR) is the creation of an artificial environment that is experienced through sights and sounds provided by a computer (Squelch, 2001). The simulated environment is achieved through a host of technologies such as three-dimensional graphics, audio feedback and special peripheral devices to produce interactive environments.VR has been used in diverse fields including medicine (Riener & Harders, 2012), entertainment (Hsu, 2011), military (Manojlovich, Prasithsangaree, Hughes, Chen, & Lewis, 2003), manufacturing (Zimmermann, 2008; Jiang, 2011), and chemical processing (Schofield, Lester, & Wilson 2005; Squires, Andersen, Reklaitis, Jayakumar, & Carmichael, 2014). VR is also becoming recognized delivery system for many forms of education, including engineering education (Bell & Fogler, 1996; Bell & Scott, 1998; Shin, 2002). For example, virtual laboratories have been designed and developed to teach students fundemental features of the heterogeneous catalytic mechanisms and absorption columns (Bell & Fogler, 1995), the multi-phase and multi-component blast furnace iron making process (Babich & Senk, 2009) and to guide students to identify various safety measures while working in real laboratory (Bell & Fogler, 1996)."

MOST of the copper mines in Canada are favored by nature in having other metals besides, copper in their ore, which puts them in a most satisfactory competitive position. Noranda ore has an important gold content, Flin Flon gold and zinc, and International Nickel of course has nickel. All of the larger copper companies in Canada operated during 1.933 and the total production of copper exceeded that of the year before. The Britannia Mining and Smelting Co. worked out to succcessful conclusion a three-product flotation process for separating the copper, zinc and iron from its low-grade ore. A presente proposta tem por objetivo desenvolver uma análise experimental da liga hipereutética Sn-0,5%Ni solidificada unidirecionalmente em regime transitório de fluxo de calor contra chapa molde de cobre. A liga foi avaliada quanto a sua microestrutura bruta de fusão e suas respectivas correlações com os parâmetros térmicos (velocidade da frente eutética -VE e taxa de resfriamento eutética -?E) e propriedades mecânicas. Os resultados mostram que a morfologia microestrutural predominante é composta por células ricas em estanho (β-Sn) circundadas por mistura eutética Sn+intermetálico tipo NiSn. Uma transição microestrutural foi observada entre as posições 15mm (?E=1,7°C/s) e 30mm (?E=1,1°C/s), de célula regular (CR)?célula tipo placa (CTP). Notou-se ainda a presença de intermetálicos primários NiSn distribuídos ao longo da matriz nas posições iniciais do lingote. Valores superiores de limite de resistência à tração (σu=26 MPa) e limite de escoamento (σy=21 MPa) foram encontrados para a posição 6mm a partir da base refrigerada do lingote, podendo estar relacionados com a estrutura celular mais refinada e também com a presença dos intermetálicos primários NiSn. O alongamento específico (?) comportou-se de maneira inversa, visto que as estruturas mais grosseiras (CTP) e a ausência de intermetálicos primários são responsáveis por facilitar a deformação plástica na estrutura da liga Sn-0,5%Ni, aumentando seu nível de ductilidade.

The use of CR-39 plastic polymer as a solid state nuclear track detector in the textural analysis of radioactive minerals in geological samples was first described by I.R Basham in 1981. CR-39 autoradiographs provide a detailed, high-resolution image of the in situ distribution of the radioactive minerals within geological samples on both the macroscopic and microscopic scales. This technique is an inexpensive and effective means of obtaining detailed textural information that provides insight into the style of mineralization, its relationship to primary and secondary structures in the host rock, and its association with particular geological features or mineral phases. Although this technique does not provide any information on the identity of the minerals responsible for the radioactivity, the resultant autoradiographs can be used to select regions for further detailed analysis such as petrography, microprobe analysis, or SEM imaging. This paper summarizes the procedure and outlines the appropriate time and materials required for both the exposure and etching of the CR-39 with respect to the intensity of the radioactivity emitted by the geological samples.

The design and construction of a Concentrator based on initial pilot plant work is rarely perfect. Palabora's plant was no exception although the basic objective to produce copper in a safely conservative manner was certainly achieved in a profitable manner. identification of the metallurgical and mechanical deficiencies of the plant through operating experience and a better concept of the minerology of the orebody enabled the development of a more efficient process both in terms of the metallurgical performance and cost effectiveness. To maintain and improve this level of efficiency, continuous inspection and revision of the plant metallurgy and engineering standards is required. In this presentation a few of the investigations and changes are described: 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill. 2.0 An analysis of the environmental condi¬tions in Palabora's grinding circuit and the introduction of high chrome balls as grinding media. 3.0 The role of magnetite in the beneficiation process at Palabora. 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill.

Mineral extraction from sulfide ore deposits usually leads to the combined action of oxygen and water on the newly exposed ore. The result is acid mine drainage, a low pH solution of various metal sulfate salts and sulfuric acid. Paradoxically, the valuable metals dissolved in acid mine water are a liability because they are too toxic for discharge but too dilute to recover economically. The expense of compliance with water quality release standards has reduced the profitability of many mining operations. Solid phase extraction (SPE) columns have been developed to extract metals from acid mine water. These columns are designed to remove the toxic elements from water and recover the metals as purified fractions. This article describes the results of a Phase 1 bench-scale project to test the performance of the SPE columns. The tests were conducted with water collected from the abandoned Berkeley Pit copper mine in Butte, MT.

Resource development conflicts arise largely due to differences in worldview between those who support and those who oppose development. This paper illustrates how societies and civilizations with different worldviews produce different levels of creative and economic energy. A questionnaire was created to build a database of responses to test whether worldview and resource development are correlated. Factor and multivariate regression analysis determined correlations for respondent groupings. Results showed a positive correlation between the respondents\u2019 worldviews and their attitudes toward resource development. Correlations became stronger as the homogeneity of the sample subgroups increased.

The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Bureau engineers made a preliminary examination of the Morefield mine early in 1943 and recommended investigation by trenching and diamond drilling, The Bureau of Mines conducted work from August to December of 1943, which indicated that the Morefield mine was a favorable location for an experimental mining program. The Bureau of Mines carried on such a program from September 1947 to March 1949. The property investigated is 30 miles southwest of Richmond in Amelia County, Va. (fig. 1). During World War II mica and beryl were shipped from the Morefield mine, but after the high prices and premiums paid during the war years were not available the mine was closed.

Introduction The work, of which some of the results are described in this paper, was started with the object of investigating the properties of certain binary alloys of titanium made from powders. Our main interest was in the possible use of such alloys in gas turbines. We were attracted to titanium, as have been others, by its high melting point (I,724° ± 11°C.), its low density (4.54), and the likelihood that, if a relatively wide use could be found for the metal, it might become available in commercial quantities at a fairly reasonable price. The readiness with which the metal reacts with hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen was recognized from the very beginning. At the same time there seemed a good chance that alloys could be produced which, because of the formation of protective films, would resist the attack of these and other corrosive agents. No specifications were drafted to cover the 'quality' of the titanium hydride powder which was used in our work and which was, to judge by the results of a few preliminary experiments, the most useful source of titanium then (1944) available in sufficient amount for our purpose. During the course of our work, the need for such specifications became very clear (see Sections 9 to 12 of this pa per). Even today, lack of knowledge regarding the effects on titanium of impurities, some of which may later be looked upon as essential elements in commercial alloys of titanium, and difficulties in manufacture, make the preparation of specifications for commercial titanium and titanium compounds a doubtful procedure. The papers presented at the 1948 Symposium on Titanium, sponsored by the U.S. Office of Naval Research lend colour to this view. At the time our work was commenced, one had to depend upon the manufacturer to supply what he considered to be his 'best' material. It may be some time before we can ask for more than this, the question as to what is his 'best' being left to the manufacturer to decide. However, in this connection the results of our study may be of some value and on that account we are constrained to publish them.

The model originally proposed by Austin, et al., has been modified in the light of further investigation of the breakage laws in SAG milling. The model uses a fully-mixed reactor for short L/D mills and calculates the breakage of small particles by the nipping action of balls and pebbles. The autogenous self-breakage of larger lumps is treated as an effective means of fast breaking rock and much slower breaking rock. Experiments show that fast autogenous breakage can be treated as a first-order breakage with an overall specific breakage rate which incorporates fracture and chipping. Similarly, slow breakage incorporates fracture and abrasion. Autogenous breakage is cushioned by the accumulation of fine material. Simulation results are compared to results from tests in a 2 m diameter continuous pilot-scale SAG mill. Future work is discussed.
