The number of variables which can effect flotation of molybdenite is very large. This paper discusses the effect of two operating variables, namely, the degree of aeration and agitation, on the grade and recovery of molybdenite. A series of factorially designed flotation tests were carried out in a "Leeds Automatic Laboratory Flotation Cell." The analysis of flotation results indicate that molybdenite can be characterized into fast-floating and slow-floating components. The rates of fast-floating components, which do not create a problem in flotation, could be varied by changing agitation of airflow rates. However, the rate of slow-floating components was stable and was only a function of residence time in the float machine. The degree of aeration has a significant effect on the grade of MoS2 with only a slight effect on the recovery of MoS2. The degree of agitation has a slight effect on the grade, but does not effect the recovery of molybdenite. The implications of the results on the design of flotation cells and control and optimization of the existing circuits is subsequently discussed.

A thermo-chemical model of the Peirce-Smith copper converter has been developed to predict the molten temperature. The primary assumption of the model was that all matte, slag and gaseous phases in the converter were in thermal and chemical equilibrium. In this model, the matte components were considered only as copper, iron and sulfur elements. In the slag making stage, all the reacted iron was converted to fayalite. The reaction rate of iron and oxygen in this stage was considered to be constant. The converter temperature was calculated by heat balance over time. The model was validated by a detailed comparison with measured industrial data. A good agreement was obtained. The converter temperature depends on process parameters such as oxygen efficiency and molten emissivity.

"INTRODUCTION The Mesabi iron district of Minnesota has a potential production of over 50 million tons of iron ore annually. The large shipments of ore each year are gradually depleting the reserves, and if the present rate of production is to be maintained there must be a growth in the present available ore supply.Growth is a natural course. The growth of a city may be affected by the addition of city blocks or by the improvement of utilities necessary for its betterment, these may go on in the order named or concurrently. The city-block type of growth of the Mesabi has been tremendous, and the ""betterment"" type has followed in due course. Probably the former has reached its limit, and if so, more time will be allotted to the latter. It is not the intent of this paper to present either a eulogy of the wonderful mining methods or a history of the milling, but it is pertinent to say that if the lean-ore area continues to produce, the continuance will be more the result of further improvement of milling methods now well under way than of extension of boundaries by the city block plan of growth.In an examination of the western end of the Mesabi district one finds sludge basins containing millions of tons of millable ore rejected by washing plants which were built for economy in operating cost and with little thought of conservation, and rich tailings piles of jigging plant rejects. In addition, there is an appreciable tonnage of bawl rake pro-ducts so low-grade that it requires mixing with the best ore of the district to make it merchantable.Any of these three products is a source of additional reserves, but gangue must be removed before the products will comply with blast-furnace stipulations. All investigators are agreed that to effect this separation comminution must be fine enough for liberation, but beyond this point opinions diverge; some would seek new processes, while others adhere to methods and machines developed in other mining districts.In the investigation by the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines working in conjunction with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy,Rolla, Mo., the latter course has been followed. Attention was first given to the sludge basins mentioned. From their contents good grades of concentrates were made and the results published 4 later commercial-scale tests were made in a pilot plant of 10 tables, and the laboratory results were confirmed, The tailings from jigging plants are high in iron, and a study of their possible retreatment showed that if they are recrushed, high recoveries of acceptable grade may be expected. INTRODUCTION In 1960, coal accounted for 49% of the world energy consumption, an amount that was reduced to 29% in 1973 because of the availability of cheap oil. At that time, it seemed that oil would remain available for a long time in unlimited quantities. However, this situation changed drastically in 1973/74 when a series of closely spaced price increases from $3 per to $12 per bbl by mid-1974 hit both industrialized and developing countries. Another sharp price increase in 1979/80 to the $34 to $38 per bbl level also hit the world economy hard and, at the same time, set in motion powerful technology development forces for increased coal utilization. At this point, the price of coal was approximately $1.50 per MM Btu, while that of oil approached $6.00 per MM Btu. This huge price differential offered an incentive for developing new coal technologies including liquefaction, gasification, fluidized bed combustion, coal-water mixture (CWM), etc. The CWM technology was of particular interest to the utility industry, which consumes more than 80% of the coal mined in the US for power generation. In this technology, a powdered coal is mixed with water to produce a stable slurry that can be stored for an extended period of time without settling and is readily pumpable. Various reagents in the amount of approximately 1% by weight of the coal are added to inhibit sedimentation during storage and to reduce the viscosity for atomization in burners. The coal loading is in the range of 50 to 80% solids, depending on the particle size and its distribution. With very fine particles, it is difficult to increase the coal loading above 50%, and a binomial distribution helps increase the coal loading. The presence of water consumes a relatively small amount of the heating value of the coal during combustion; for a coal-water slurry containing 30% water, less than 5% of the calorific value of coal is usually consumed due to evaporation. The major advantage of burning coal as a slurry is that many of the oil-burning furnaces can be converted to coal-burning with a minimum retrofit cost. Considering the substantial price margin between coal and oil, the pay- back period for retrofit costs can be relatively short. Nevertheless, the retrofit cost can be further reduced if low-ash coals are used as feedstocks for CWM; there will be savings in the capital cost of installing bag filters or electrostatic precipitators that are designed to remove the ash from the combustion gases. Furthermore, the use of low-ash coals can minimize derating of boilers because the velocity of the combustion gases can be maximized without creating erosion

ENGINEERING department problems of unravel- ling filing systems of reference data, detail drawings, magazine tear sheets, technical records, manufacturers' catalogs-and coordinating them with the information classification systems employed by the company library and other information services -are being solved in many cases by adopting a basic classification system such as that used by Sweet's Catalog Service and applying its classification and indexing methods to file or bookshelf. By this procedure the engineering department does away with the confusion, duplication, and conflict that exist between personal, department, and company library files. It establishes a pattern for regulating and distributing the potential information that piles up daily in the engineering department basket marked "Incoming."

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to give a •brief history of iron and steel in British Columbia, a quick look at the present operations of Western Canada Steel, Limited, a review of iron ore resources and iron and steel markets, and a projection of what the future might hold for the industry in British Columbia.From the Past to the PresentWhile the paper is entitled Past, Present, and Future, in covering the past, which we shall call the time prior to 1947, there is very little to be said. Small shipments of iron ore were made from the Texada deposits by the Puget Sound Iron Company from 1886 to 1907. Total ore shipped did not exceed 70,000 tons. Part of this is believed to have been used in building a United States battleship in 1907 in the Bremerton Naval Yards in Seattle, Washington.In 1914 a small steel mill was started on Lulu island, rolling bars from •box piles and used shafting. This mill operated spasmodically for a few years but finally burned down in 1921. The rolling mill stands were sold to China and are no doubt in operation in China today.In 1916 the City of Port Moody assisted in the financing of a mill which operated on re-roll rails, box piles, and steel ingots made in an experimental electric furnace in Port Moody. This furnace also produced small quantities of pig iron scrap. The backers of the Port Moody mill showed a great deal of enterprise and must have been a very forward looking group, since this was one of the first recorded applications of the electric furnace to small ingot production. Despite their enterprise, the operation was unsuccessful and terminated in 1921."

In April 1932, the Bureau of Mines published Information Circular 6595, entitled "Data in Reference to Installation of Cables in Shafts and Boreholes", in which were described methods followed in various sections of the United States when electrical circuits are taken into mines by means of cables suspended in shafts and boreholes. In view of the present tendency to extend high-tension cables along entries and passageways from the bottom of the shaft, borehole, or other point of entrance to coal mines rather than over the surface, it is deemed that the various methods of installing such cables deserve careful consideration, particularly in mines in which gas and coal dust contribute to explosion hazards. This is especially true of localities where there is an inclination to restrict the extension of 2,300- and 4,000-volt circuits into the mines. Probably it is feared that accidental contact with the cables of such circuits may result in more serious shock than with lower voltages; also, it is possible that new circuits are regarded merely as explosion hazards additional to those already existing, regardless of the manner in which the new circuits may be installed. It is the firm belief of some engineers that the circuits can be installed so that they will not be damaged by wrecks or roof falls, thereby eliminating the hazard of explosion from this source while at the same time making the chance of accidental contact remote if not impossible. Moreover, some believe that fire hazards from direct-current systems can be reduced by keeping motor-generator sets close to load centers. Thus, although the alternating-current circuits would be lengthened, the size and extent of direct-current circuits would be kept to a minimum.

The concept of using water-only cyclones as a clean coal scalping device preceding a heavy media cyclone circuit shows considerable promise, as it can considerably reduce the feed to the heavy media cyclone circuit. The system will not perform as well as a heavy media cyclone circuit alone, but the resultant loss in yield is small and may be negligible under some conditions. The concept of water-only cyclone scalping has previously been suggested by others. By reducing the amount of raw coal to be processed in the more expensive circuits overall capital and operating costs may be reduced. There are a few commercial plants with circuits operating on this concept. In the Warwick and Rowland plants water-only cyclones are used to scalp the feed to a heavy media vessel and Deister tables respectively while Amherst Coal Company's McGregor plant uses them to scalp the feed to a heavy media cyclone circuit. The system was evaluated on a technical basis, both from a theoretical viewpoint and by analysis of a computer simulation, in order to gain a fuller understanding of its usefulness and limitations.

Chrysotile asbestos occurs in many counties in California, and a small production had been reported at times, but development of deposits had been disappointing. A reconnaissance survey by the Bureau of Mines indicated that several deposits in the serpentine belt in Shasta, Trinity, and Siskiyou Counties might contain enough asbestos of filler grade to supply the growing demand on the west coast. Accordingly from 1956 to 1958 parts of the Mount Eddy and Shasta View deposits were investigated by trenching and diamond drilling to determine their potential. The work comprised construction of roads, bulldozer trenching, excavation of areas for diamond drilling, sampling, and upping. The trenches were excavated to expose the surface extent of some of the asbestos-bearing areas, To determine the downward continuation of asbestos-bearing sections and to secure samples for test purposes, six diamond drill holes, totaling 1,738 linear feet, were drilled in two selected areas. The trenching and core-drilling indicated that the asbestos-bearing material occurs as ribs and lenses of varying thicknesses in a broad belt of serpentine, about 600 feet wide and several miles long,

Ten proposed processes for the recovery of manganese from domestic resources as a high-grade oxide product are described. Nine of the processes employ sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid, or a combination of both for leaching. The tenth process utilizes sulfur dioxide to sulfatize the ore at 600° to 850°C before water leaching. In addiction to these ten complete processes, six processes from the patent literature are described. Methods for receovering MnSO4?H2O are also reviewed.

With the World Summit for Sustainable Development planned for 2002 in mind, nine of the world's largest mining companies decided to initiate a project to examine the role of the minerals sector in contributing to sustainable development, and how that contribution could be increased ? the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development Project (MMSD). This project assumed from the start that sustainable development could provide a useful framework to guide the minerals sector which main goal was integrating economic activity with environmental integrity, social concerns, and effective governance systems. The broad steps of MMSD project strategy can be grouped into four major categories: increase understanding of sustainable development; create organizational-level policies and management systems for implementing the principles of sustainable development; collaborate with others with common interests to take joint steps towards sustainable development, and; increase our ability to work towards sustainable development at the local, national, and global levels. In opinion of the article's author, to go ahead with the MMSD strategy and achieving the sustainable development objectives, it is necessary to consider the concept of self-organization, fundamental of the emergent new scientific paradigm, and the consequent epistemology and values that conform a supporting culture for sustainable development.

ABOUT thirty miles south of the port of Coquimbo, Chile, nestling in one of the western outliers of the main Andes range, lies the little mining town of Andacollo, a place whose history and traditions make up one of the most romantic pages in the life story of this southern republic. The beginning of Andacollo is shrouded in the penumbra of the pre-Columbian era, but its first mining activity probably dates from about the years 1440 to 1460. It was in the middle of the fifteenth century that the Inca Tupac-Yupanqui, grandfather of Atahualpa, conquered this part of Chile. His domain extended even as far south as the present site of Santiago, and perhaps farther, but was maintained with increasing difficulty against the fiercely independent and indomitable tribes of Araucanian Indians of the South.

"In 2013, as the prices of precious metals dropped, investors moved their positions to equity markets for higher returns. As a result, the price of gold dropped further to below US$1200 per ounce, prompting additional substantial outflows from gold investments. In response to lagging gold prices, major gold producers initiated large asset write-downs and cost-cutting programmes. In 2015, this trend continues and gold mining stocks are close to lows not seen since the global financial crisis (GFC) of 2008. In the current economic climate many projects have marginal economics, and the number of projects that have competitive development and production costs is declining. A competitive edge is particularly important with the decreasing grades of orebodies, increasing complexity of the mineralogy, and increasingly demanding environmental constraints. In addition, higher cost producers seek to optimize their process t o reduce operating costs.This paper presents some highlights of three case studies on optimization of gold leaching strategies that improved the economics of brownfield projects. Processing of sulphide-bearing ores was optimized by using the synergy between cyanide, lead nitrate, and oxygen. The outcomes were significant reduction of retention times while maintaining or increasing gold extraction and reducing cyanide addition and effluent treatment costs. A stirred tank reactor experimental programme led to direct implementation of reliable leaching strategies from laboratory scale to production. This approach resulted in savings of $2.2 million to $15.2 million on the three brownfield projects discussed in this paper."

MOST mining engineers and geologists realize the value of photographs in their professional work. Members of each group use photographs to illustrate their reports, and articles and photographs, when available, will often save many words of written text in explaining some point or in proving some pet theory. No one hesitates to take aboveground pictures but many rarely take their cameras underground. However, underground photography, too, is really simple. I do not believe that anything new is offered here and the procedures given are merely a compilation of various methods I have tried and used, with some success, over the past six or seven years. The article will deal with photographs to be taken in metal mines, but only in those where no gas hazard exists, with resultant danger of explosions and fire. Some mining company geologists consider the camera a necessary part of their equipment and carry one on their daily trips to the various parts of the mine under their observation. I know of one company whose files of geologic sketches of heading, backs. and veins are supplemented by actual photographs so that a nice geologic picture

The Bureau of Mines studied single - step catalytic vapor - phase hydrogenation of oils derived from coal and oil shale . Treatment of middle oil , from hydrogenation of bituminous coal , gave good yields of gasoline with a German - made molybdenum- zinc - chromium catalyst . The Bureau also achieved good results with duplicates of this catalyst made from domestic raw materials . In one set of experiments with the German catalyst , 38 to 52 wt pct of feed was converted to gasoline . The total liquid product was 91 to 98 wt pct of the feed . Not all this gasoline can be claimed as production , however , because about 20 pct of the feed was in the gasoline range , and part of it undoubtedly survived the hydrocracking treatment . Hydrogenation of crude shale oil in the presence of cobalt molybdate catalyst produced a total liquid product of 89 wt pct of feed . The hydrogenation converted 27 wt pct of feed to gasoline and 44 wt pct of feed to diesel fuel . The remaining liquid product , 18 wt pct of feed , was residue boiling above diesel fuel . The gasoline was of poor quality , with an octane number of 39.1 . The overall product seemed a suitable feed stock for a conventional refining operation . Coker distillate hydrogenation , using a cobalt molybdate catalyst , gave a total liquid product of 97 vol pct of feed ; of this product 60 vol pct was jet fuel and 40 vol pct was diesel fuel . The I-75 Modernization Project (Segment 3) just north of Detroit, MI is being delivered as a Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM), which is a Public Private Partnership (P3). The project includes design and reconstruction of 5.5 miles of freeway, including a depressed section with a 20,630-ft long, 14.5-ft inside diameter, up to 100-ft deep stormwater tunnel, multiple drop shafts, and a pump station. The project also includes a maintenance term of 25-years. This is the first time MDOT has used a P3 delivery method for a major highway and tunnel project. This paper describes the development of the P3 documents, including performance-based tunnel and shaft technical requirements, and the approach to project risk management, financing, and insurance coverage.

This article is instead about an emerging application for diamonds, hard rock percussive drilling with diamond drill bits. Diamond’s outstanding wear resistance has long been taken advantage of in core drilling. However, until now diamond has been less successful in hard rock production drilling in the mining and quarry industry.
