The majority of individuals involved in the mining industry can appreciate and under-stand that mining is an activity that is necessary to satisfy the very basic needs of society, and to assist in accommodating our ever-changing world. As the expression goes, ?if it can?t be grown, it has to be mined.? And at this point in time, society has granted the mining industry the right to go about the business of mining, with the general anticipation that the work will be carried out without causing undue harm to the environment or populations in and around the mining operation. The term ?sustainable development? is gaining momentum as a popular concept, and indeed it has become something of a catch-all phrase, but it is important that the idea behind the term is not cast aside as a nonsense buzz word, as it simply is an indication that development (e.g. mining) can be satisfactorily carried out with an eye toward stewardship of the environment and society. On Feb. 19, 2010, a round-table discussion (Roundtable 2010) on ?Strides Toward Sustainability in Mining? was hosted by Knight Piésold and Co. (Knight Piésold) at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV. Knight Piésold had local representatives (Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce), as well as representatives from other office locations (Cynthia Parnow and Rick Damiani from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from Tucson, AZ) to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to 30 attendees from five states. Attendees included personnel from nine mining properties and various corporate offices. The majority of participants were people who are directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Others were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus.

A complete mining cycle involves digging, loading, hauling and dumping of the materials. Moving the ore from the pit to the crusher or to the waste dump requires access routes, which are termed haul roads. These roads have to be designed, constructed and maintained. A review of the literature indicates a common consensus among researchers that there should be a balance between haul road economics and safety of the road users. However, there is no universally accepted theory on the design of haul road geometry and, in particular, road dimensions. The current industry practice is based on empirical data and rules of thumb developed by engineers. Therefore, this paper will use the overlooked and less valued branch of mathematics, arithmetic progression, to derive a road width equation. It is beyond the scope of this paper to discuss all road design components. The focus will be on the geometric aspects, which more often have a direct impact on road safety. In this paper, the current design practices and techniques for haul road geometrics design will be explored, using arithmetic progression to formulate road width equations, case examples to apply the equation and then validating the results with conventional techniques that have confirmed the reliability of road width equations, thus eliminating use of tables during design.

Coal is expected to play a major role in energy supply in the next 20 years. Oil is a convenient and still reasonably abundant fuel. However, its major sources of supply are regions where there is nervousness about political stability. Uranium is a more efficient fuel - but there is a continuing community apprehension regarding its use. What coal may lack in efficiency, it makes up in long term availability and competitive overall cost. Moreover, diversity of source ensures stable long-term supply. In this way, a major role for coal in the world energy scene is assured. Cyclical considerations aside, demand for coal will increase significantly and it will meet a substantial share of new energy demand, replacing oil and gas in major industrial and electric utility markets. By around the year 2000, coal's share of world energy could reach 30% and rival oil as the largest single source of energy.

When I was first asked to give a paper on work-life balance in the mining industry I was both excited and aware of the incongruity of my position. I have never worked in mining operations nor have I had any experience that approximates the on-site lifestyle. IÆm not really an adventurer or a traveller, I prefer writing and research to hands-on activities and IÆve never worked further than twenty minutes away from home. The perspective I offer is thus largely an objective one. I say largely since I grew up in a family where my parents work arrangements involved long-distance commuting; my dad continues to work FIFO at a coalmine in Blackwater until this day. Perhaps my tortoise-like existence is a rebellion against his flighty movements. The analysis I will be presenting today draws together a variety of sources, from member anecdotes and research on FIFO and work-life balance to the popular philosophy writings of a bald Englishman with a French name. I am speaking of the famous writer, Alain de Botton, whose television show æThe Consolations of PhilosophyÆ you may have seen on the ABC. Work-life balance is a term that gets a lot of mileage in corporate brochures and at breakfast seminars. But like many terms that get bandied around in the human resources circuit, from æteam synergyÆ to æperformance optimisationÆ, I am frequently perplexed as to what it actually means. Corporate websites are at pains to emphasise the high priority that they place on the needs of the whole person. Yet in terms of substantive content, a commitment to work-life balance often seems to translate into little more than the option to take a few morning yoga classes in exchange for working a seventy-hour week. As extended work hours have taken their toll, leading to high attrition of professionals across all industries, employers are increasingly expending resources to discover just what lies behind this buzz word. The challenge for companies is to find meaningful strategies to help employees better integrate different aspects of their lives in a new era of work, as employees are sending the message that they are not willing to play work, social life and leisure off against each other in a zero sum game.

The mining industry is at a crossroads. Currently, there is an estimated $25 billion worth of projects around the world that have been stopped as the consequence of a dispute or disagreement with their communities, the government or some other stakeholder. Anglo American chief executive officer Mark Cutifani is one who sees the mining industry in need of change and on Dec. 12, he gave the keynote address for the launch the Kellogg Innovation Network?s Mining Company of the Future Initiative?s Development Partner Framework (DPF). The launch was held at the Ford Foundation building in New York City. The DPF seeks to inspire and support the mining industry to adopt a new way of thinking and a new approach to how it secures, nurtures and revitalizes its social license to operate. Working with a diverse group of people from faith-based organizations, nongovernmental organizations (NGO) and other stakeholders, Cutifani often had the rather uncomfortable position of representing the mining industry in a room full of people who are far from the industry?s biggest fans.

Furnace superalloy was applied in harsh environment within the erosion of high temperature and oxidizing atmosphere. With plasma powder surfacing technology, iron-based alloy powder was sprayed on the surface of 310S stainless steel to form oxidation layer that increases the oxidation resistance and reduces the cost of materials. With optimum technological parameters, in this paper, oxidation test of 100 hours on iron-based cladding alloy and furnace alloy were carried out at 1200 . The technique of XRF, XRD and EDS were used to characterize composition, oxide morphologies and surface mechanical properties. The results showed that Element composition of cladding layer formed by Plasma powder surfacing was well distributed. Its oxidation weight gain rate of 100 hours was 0.4552g/m2h, belonged to antioxidant level. The oxidation weight gain rate of furnace alloy was 1.4617g/m2h, belonged time-antioxidant level. And on the mechanical comparison test, surfacing alloy is relatively excellent than furnace alloy.

This iron ore mine site, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, commenced operations in 1998, with ore derived by mining of open-cut pits in Channel Iron Deposits (CIDs). A portion of the ore extracted at the mine is processed at wet processing plants that produce both ore saleable product and waste fines (i.e. tailings) slurry. The waste fines produced at the wet plants are presently stored within Waste Fines Cells (WFCs).Waste fines cells A (WFCA) and B (WFCB) are located within an Autonomous Haul System (AHS) area and consist of embankments that span the width of the pit in east-west alignments. Technical studies and design analyses were carried out to support embankment raises and ongoing development of the WFCs. During operation and development of the WFCs, a multitude of simultaneous activities took place to the immediate north and south of WFCA respectively. These activities included the construction of the embankment raises using the AHS fleet, mining of the CID to not only mine the ore but to also create future deposition space for WFCB, blasting next to the WFC embankments as part of the mining activities, seepage collection and dewatering of the pit in the vicinity of the WFC.This paper discusses the material characteristics, design approach, construction staging and equipment requirements, blasting near embankments, water management, facility consequence category and closure concept.CITATION:Boshoff, J J, 2018. One concern of the Mine Safety and Health Administration is the structural integrity of steel wire ropes used on mine personnel hoists and elevators. Failure of such ropes has resulted in loss of life and property. Although thorough and regular visual examinations are performed, hoist ropes may still fail from undetected internal wear, corrosion, and broken wires. To complement visual examinations, nondestructive rope inspection techniques have been developed to determine deterioration and removal criteria. The techniques use electromagnetic and permanent-magnet test instruments designed by a Canadian firm. This paper describes the operating principles, field and laboratory testing of these nondestructive testing instruments, and discusses the feasibility of using this type of testing as a supplement to visual examination and destructive tests.

SUMMARY: Geotechnical problems often lead to an increase of construction time and costs for large highway and railway projects. Some reasons, which have led to failures and thus to a delay of construction works as well as to increasing costs, are demonstrated by means of case histories, in which the author was involved as expert or planner. Proposals are made how to identify the reasons and to avoid repetitions. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Bei Großprojekten der Verkehrsinfrastruktur stehen häufig geotechnische Aufgabenstellungen im Vordergrund. Wegen geotechnischer Probleme kam und kommt es häufig zu Termin- und Kostenüberschreitungen. Anhand einiger Beispiele, bei denen der Autor als Gutachter und Planer beteiligt war, wird gezeigt, welche Ursachen zu Schadensfällen und damit auch zu Termin- und Kostenüberschreitungen geführt haben. Es werden Hinweise und Anregungen gegeben, wie die Ursachen erkannt und Wiederholungen von Schadensfällen vermieden werden können. RÉSUMÉ: À grands projets de l'infrastructure de la circulation, souvent des tâches géotechniques sont au premier plan. Par suite de problèmes géotechniques, souvent des dates et frais ont été dépassés. Au moyen de quelques exemples, à lesquels l'auteur participait comme expert et planificateur, les causes sont mises en vue qui menaient à des cas de dommage et par cela aussi à des dépassements de dates et frais. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT Geographic Setting The Kops II plant is a pumped storage scheme of the hydroelectric power producer ‘Vorarlberger Illwerke AG’ which is currently under construction in the Austrian Province of Vorarlberg. The plant is located at the end of the Montafon valley and will be fed with water coming from the Silvretta mountain range (Figure 1) Description of Plant The Kops II plant shall be operated as a pumped storage plant with three highly flexible and quickly controllable power generating units. Each unit shall have a capacity of 150 MW and shall be equipped for both turbine operation and pump operation. The Kops II plant uses the existing Kops Lake as upper storage reservoir and the existing Rifa balancing reservoir as lower storage reservoir. All major plant components of the Kops II scheme are located below ground. Total investment costs areapprox. 360 million Euro. Construction Lots The construction works for the Kops II plant, which were subdivided into three lots, were launched in September 2004. It is planned that the first power generating unit shall go on line in the year 2007. The completion of the overall project and the operation start-up of the second and third unit are envisaged for the year 2008. Lot 1—Pressure Tunnel. The 5.5-km-long pressure tunnel forms the connection between the Kops Lake and the beginning of the pressure shaft. The tunnel was excavated by the use of a double-shield TBM. Lot 2—Pressure Shaft and Surge Chamber. The approx. 1.1-km-long pressure shaft was excavated by TBM, advancing from bottom to top. Featuring an inclination of80%, the pressure shaft overcomes a difference in height of approx. 700 m. Lot 3—Power House Cavern and Tailrace Structure. The power house cavern, which is being built approx. 150 m inside the mountain, forms the core of this plant. The power house is designed to accommodate three power generating units, and the transformer cavern is forseen to accommodate three transformer units. The tailrace structure serves the purpose of conveying the water to the lower storage reservoir during turbine operation and as water intake during pump operation (Figure 2).

When a company develops a mineral property in a remote area of Alaska, it must consider how best to house its personnel. This Bureau of Mines report examines the economics of two options: company towns and company camps. The price required to maintain a 15% discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) was derived for hypothetical 1,000-st/d cut-and-fill mines and 50,000-st/d open-pit mines located in three different regions of the State, One set of hypothetical mines utilizes a townsite; the other utilizes a relatively new concept, a fly-in camp or commuting operation, in which two shifts of employees operate the mine and all associated facilities for 1 week before being replaced by a second crew. The study shows that operating costs were higher for mines employing the commuting option than for mines having a company town because of the additional wages paid for overtime hours; however, the price required to obtain a 15% DCFROR for the single-product copper concentrate, f.0.b. the mill site, was significantly lower owing to the lower investment costs for the camp-type operation. The economic advantage for those mines utilizing the camp increases from south to north and from the coast toward the interior.

Experiments measuring the kinetics of oxidation and making visual observations of the oxidation of approximately 6 g static lead baths containing arsenic, antimony and tin were conducted in the temperature range from 500 to 600 oC. A range of repeatable behaviours were observed, notably: the formation of a coherent, solid oxide layers on pure lead and lead-tin alloys; the formation of liquid oxide droplets during the initial oxidation of lead-arsenic and lead-antimony alloys and the eventual formation of a complete oxide layer covering the entire free surface of these alloys. Thermogravimetric measurements revealed that the rate of oxygen uptake was strongly influenced by the form of oxides being generated at the melt/gas interface. Compared to the rates of oxidation of pure lead, arsenic increased the rate of oxygen uptake throughout the temperature range via the formation of liquid oxidation products. The presence of antimony resulted in a moderate increase in the rate of oxygen uptake as compared to arsenic. Tin was effective in lowering the rate of oxidation even in the presence of arsenic because the oxidation product was always a coherent layer that acted as a physical barrier to oxygen transport to the underlying alloy.

IN the fall of 1929, a paper was presented at the Annual Western Meeting of the Institute entitled The Fuel Research Laboratories at Ottawa and the Scope of Their Investigations. At that time, the equipment of the laboratories had not been completely installed, but the regular routine work was being carried on as usual, and several large-scale investigations were being conducted. It is now five years since that paper was presented, and it seems fitting that a brief description of the investigations which have been undertaken, together with results-especially those which have reference to western Canadian fuels-be presented at this Annual Western Meeting. The coal mining industry of western Canada has, within the past few years, suffered many unfortunate vicissitudes. The replacement of coals by oil, for bunkering ships, for operating railway locomotives, and for heating, has weighed heavily on the coal mining industry of British Columbia and Alberta generally, but more particularly in the Crowsnest Pass area and Vancouver-and hydro-electric developments have also left their impress. With a full appreciation of these conditions, the Department of Mines planned research and large-scale investigations which it was considered would be of the greatest benefit to the coal industry, and the results have amply justified the plans and anticipations. The fact, however, must not be lost sight of, that the application of the findings of certain of these investigations would not have been feasible had not the Federal Government assisted the transportation of coal by the application of railway subventions. These subventions permitted Canadian coals to compete at competitive points with United States coals, and it must be admitted also in this connection that certain of the collieries which have benefitted, both as a result of the railway subventions and the investigations conducted by the Fuel Research Laboratories of the Department of Mines, made special efforts to produce a coal which was capable of competing with the American product, by special preparation at the mines.

Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas. In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investments in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-substitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.   The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. IT, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East.   The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.

THE name fuller's earth, which was derived from its early use in "fulling" or removing grease from woolen goods, is a term that is generally considered to designate mineral matter, containing hydrous aluminum silicates of the clay group, which has a high capacity for removing colors from oils, whether of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin. Fuller's earths are usually dried and may be "tempered" by heating or may be treated with water or reagents to improve their efficiency. For our purpose the term "acid-treated earths" will include those products from the partial decomposition of mineral water by acid which are equal to or more efficient than an untreated fuller's earth from Quincy, Fla., when used in bleaching mineral oil by the "contact" process. In general, the contact process for treating oils consists of heating and agitating a mixture of oil and finely divided adsorbent, the latter being subsequently removed by filtration. The term "adsorbent" is used because, although there has been a great deal of controversy over the mechanism of removal of impurities from oils by mineral matter, there is no doubt that adsorption, which involves the surface of the solid, plays a major part.1 The properties that make fuller's earth useful in the treatment of petroleum products by "percolation" and in the purification of edible oils by the contact process have long been studied, but the comparatively recent adaptation of the contact process to the bleaching of petroleum products has made desirable the further investigation of fuller's earth and other adsorbent earths.

Stability analyses of fractured and faulted rock masses require delineation of the position, extent, and orientation of geologic discontinuities. The size of the smallest active discontinuity that may potentially be resolved using the spatial distribution of microseismic event locations is Limited by the accuracy and precision of the location methods. At a hard-rock mine in the Coeur D'Alene mining district of northern Idaho, two data sets consisting of calibration blast signals from a known source site and origin time and microseismic event signals were recorded using a stope-wide accelerometer array. These seismic signals are used to quantify various sources of error in event location. Five factors influencing source location errors are examined in this U.S. Bureau of Mines study: (1) biases of the numerical source location techniques, (2) receiver array geometries, (3) uncertainties in receiver positions, (4) errors in picking arrival times, and (5) uncertainties in seismic velocity structure, including the effect of mine openings. In addition, synthetic data (accelerometer positions, travel-time picks and wave velocity) are used to determine the effect of known systematic and random errors on source location calculations. It is shown that the commonly accepted association of minimum travel-time residuals with the best location solution does not necessarily hold true when there is a systematic error in seismic velocity. Recommendations are made for increasing the accuracy and precision of locations of microseismic events detected under similar field conditions.

Rapid, sensitive, and precise methods of determing major, minor and trace constituents of oilfield brines are needed. Several methods have been developed or adapted by the Federal Bureau of Mines at the Petroleum Research Center, Bartlesville, Okla. The following methods are described in this report: Spectrophotometric and volumetric for iodides and bromides; potentiometric for pH, alkalinity, acidity, borate boron, total boron, and organic boron; gravimetric for potassium; disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) volumetric for total hardness, calcium, and magnesium; spectrophotometric for fluorides; and color comparison .for arsenic. Adequate sensitivity, precision, and accuracy were obtained for each method. The Bureau of Mines pioneered in research on the analysis of oilfield waters (2, 46, 47).6 However, several of these early procedures were quite time consuming. Also, they did not include methods for determining trace and minor constituents of brines.

Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. Carbon sequestration in planted forests provides an immediately available, low cost option to address the greenhouse impacts of coal mining and coal utilisation in a carbon constrained world. In addition, planted forests also offer the opportunity to address other environmental issues, particularly salinity and loss of biodiversity. Given salinity is characteristically associated with agriculture in the 500 to 700 mm rainfall belt, then where such forests can also produce commercial timber products, they offer the additional opportunity to establish new, diversified rural employment in both timber growing and processing. In the majority of Australian catchments affected by salinity, where rainfall is generally less than the 700 mm limit to conventional forestry, and where groundwater reserves are often saline, the objective of achieving economically viable forestry production presents a significant challenge. In 1996, Saltgrow commenced a collaborative breeding program to combine the salt and stress tolerance of E camaldulensis, with the growth rate, stem form and wood properties of the commercial species, E grandis and E globules. This program aimed to produce trees with the potential for commercial rehabilitation of saline landscapes. Results covering a range of site conditions from SaltgrowÆs network of over 100 trials around Australia are presented. The opportunity for commercial plantations integrated with agriculture in low to medium rainfall areas to address salinity and sustainability will be discussed. In addition, the significant potential for partnerships between land-rich, cash-poor farmers, catchment management authorities seeking to invest in public good projects that enhance environmental sustainability, and major carbon producing industries with either mandated or voluntary requirements to curtail net emissions will also be discussed.
